Alcala del Jucar ready exceeds that of the city, is not enough. Furthermore, appointments cannot be made on the spot in the Civic Centre and have to be made by telephone to Orihuela city Social Services Department in Spanish which is obviously an obstacle for those not speaking Spanish. In relation to social services, Orihuela Costa is not being treated fairly and equally compared to the city, despite contributing more than 60% of the income of the municipality. In January, in a Motion approved in the full Council plenary, C.L.A.R.O. called for a Day Care Centre to be opened in Orihuela Costa which would provide organised activities for the elderly with medical supervision. It could be located in a new privately owned Residence in Villamartin built on municipal land with the proviso that subsidised places would be available for local residents in both its medical and day centre facilities. Locating a Day Care Centre in this new Residence would avoid the need to refurbish a publicly owned building and the cost to Orihuela Town Hall of providing subsidised places would be minimal. But nothing has been done to follow up this agreed proposal while, in the meantime, the city continues to improve its social services thanks to the financial resources provided by Orihuela Costa’s taxpayers. We were told when the new government took office that Orihuela Costa would no longer have its own councillor for the coast and presumably therefore no budget for the coast and that under a new policy of centralisation, Orihuela Costa would be managed directly by the Town Hall in Orihuela City. We were told we would be guaranteed equal treatment. No such thing. In a recently approved programme of urban renewal, €800,000 would be deployed in the city and surrounding villages, with only peanuts going to the coast where some older urbanisations have seen no urban renewal in over 40 years. Now we have the latest example of improved day centre activities and treatment for the disabled by ADIS in Orihuela City and nothing for the coast. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

THE IMBALANCE of services that citizens in the less populated Orihuela City receive as opposed to the lack of the services, facilities, amenities and infrastructure that citizen’s living on the Orihulea Costa receive, was once again pointed out by political group CLARO. While applauding the fact that yesterday, 1st October, ADIS, the specialist association for the handicapped in the Vega Baja area will open its new headquarters in the centre of Orihuela, as they pointed out, the trouble is that because of the distance, those living 30 kilometres away in Orihuela Costa are facing a 60 kilometre round trip, and thus are effectively denied the use of these new services and no one can deny that many living in Orihuela Costa could benefit from them. The headquarters for ADIS is a refurbished building owned by Orihuela Town Hall and ADIS will receive a subsidy of over 80,000€ from both the Orihuela Town Hall and the Valencia regional government enabling it to employ five social workers, a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist. They will operate this as a Day Care Centre and in the evening provide physiotherapy, psychological and occupational therapy. In a press release, CLARO said: Compared to the city, Orihuela Costa has poor, even nonexistent social services. The city already has the thriving centre “Virgen de Montserrate” used by some 3,000 (mainly elderly) people. In addition, the association Dinoco look after around 120 children with special needs and two others, the occupational centre Oriol and ILDO seek to integrate into society hundreds more handicapped people. By contrast, Orihuela Costa’s modest Civic Centre, used by some 500 people, not necessarily all living in the municipality of Orihuela, is mainly a centre for leisure activities for those who subscribe to one of two organisations which occupy some 80% of the space and time of the Centre It has a social worker who processes requests for social assistance from residents but the limited time available of this one person for the population of Orihuela Costa, which al-

Government plans to scrap prescription charges THE COMMUNIDAD Valencia has announced plans to scrap the prescription charges for the disabled and pensioners on a low income. by Jeanette Rice THE MOVE comes as many residents are finding themselves having to make difficult decisions in whether to buy their medication or pay their bills. In a statement issued by Carmen Monton, minister with the PSOE party, she said “in just the last two months nearly 8% of people in the Valencia region have stopped taking their medication because they cannot afford it and this is grossly unfair.â€? Under the current system even those who previously received free prescription have to make a contribution irrespective of their income. However, under the changes pensioners who receive less than â‚Ź1,000 a month or those who are permanently disabled will face no charge whatsoever. Snr Monton has been quite open about her disdain with the previous PP led regional government saying that instead of funding the health service money was spent on Formula One circuits, the Agora stadium and other non essential services.
Other major changes that are planned are the de privatisation of hospitals such as Alzira, Manises, Denia, Elche and Torrevieja although this will take considerable time. During the interim period the private management of the hospitals will be monitored to ensure that contracted services are maintained. The Valencian region is not the first to defy the central government policy of paying for healthcare as many other regions are reverting back to free healthcare for those in need. It is three years since the central government ceased medical care for non EU residents with over 30,000 in this region alone currently not entitled to free healthcare, a situation which Carmen Monton says will change with already 3,500 being given back their health care rights. The changes do not come without budgetary concerns but Snr Monton is definite in that everyone has a right to affordable healthcare.
Pensioners who receive less than 1,000 a month or those who are permanently disabled will face no charge

Two teenagers die in Ibiza POLICE HAVE launched an investigation into the death of an 18 year old girl who was found in her Ibiza hotel room.
The Marco Polo hotel
by Jeanette Rice REBECA MARIA Brock was found by a cleaner in her hotel room on Wednesday morning around 11am, with the British Foreign Office now offering the family assistance at this difficult time. Reports say that there appeared to be no signs of any violence and initial reports are that she may have died of natural causes although a full autopsy was being carried out. Rebeca was staying at the Marco Polo Hotel in San Antono, Ibiza. In another incident this week in Ibiza another British national died in intensive care at the islands Can Misses Hospital. Danielle McCallum, also a teenager, was half British and half Dutch and friends say that before she was taken ill she had taken an ecstasy tablet and tests were being carried out to see if this was the case. Family of Danielle believe it would have been highly unlikely that she would have taken drugs although she was on painkillers following a bad fall.

Posting illegal activity is not a good idea!
ONE BOY racer who just had to share via the internet that he was speeding has found out the hard way that crime doesn’t pay. The 25 year old man, who lives in La Robla, Leon, posted a video of himself speeding on the internet at 220 kilometres an hour within a 90 kilometre speed limit. As the video went viral on social network sites the Guardia Civil soon became aware of the incident and set about tracking the driver and his vehicle down, which they did successfully. The man was charged with committing a serious road traffic offence and all the details have been sent to the Magistrate Court in Leon for a court date to be set. The man is likely to face a prison sentence of between three to six months or if he is luck a fine combined with six to twelve months community service and a possible four year driving ban.
What now for Catalonia? by Jeanette Rice
IN A landmark vote on Sunday, Catalonian’s voted resoundingly for the party wanting independence from Spain. The regional elections turned into a vote as to whether the population of Catalonia wanted to separate from the rest of Spain and be independent politically, resulting in the biggest voting turnout in history for the region. The two separatist parties won just under 48% of the vote but because of how the seats are allocated it has meant that they will hold 72 of the 135 seats, giving them a solid majority in the Catalan parliament. The separatist leaders have now vowed to
progress with plans to create a new state although the conservative PP leader Xavier Garcia Albiol said “the vote had a very high turnout and it is clear that a majority of Catalan’s do not want to break with Spain.” With both sides claiming a victory the mixed messages are set to stage a political stand off that will not help with the conflicts that have been present between Catalan and the national government in Madrid. With the Spanish government saying that they will take any legal action available to them to stop the Catalonian’s becoming an independent state the impact of the unrest is that the financial markets are uneasy about the situation and this has
a knock on effect with the recovery from recession. Over 77% of the people eligible to vote did so in an issue that has seen Catalonia edging toward a break with Spain for five years. There have been large pro-independence demonstrations and a resolution in Catalonia’s parliament on the right to self-determination and a symbolic referendum with 2.3 million participants last November. In July the two largest pro independent parties joined together to form “Together for Yes”. It is thought that there will be a further push for independence with another vote possibly being taken within 18 months unless the central government of Spain can block the campaign.

Pilar Gómez Magán, new coordinator of “Ciudadanos”
ON TUESDAY Torrevieja’s board of the Ciudadanos party met to decide who should be the new coordinator of the local party.
Pilar Gómez Magan and Paqui Parra, the Cs Torrevieja councillors
by Keith Nicol
THE MEETING took place in Hotel Madrid, Torrevieja to decide on the new board, especially important in the run up to the General election in December. Torrevieja Councillor Pilar Gómez Magán won the vote by 25 votes to 22 taking over from José Manuel Romero, who challenged the voting process used to decide who should make up the new members of the board with Pilar Gómez Magán and up to four other political activists. Paqui Parra, the other elected Torrevieja councillor was not included in the proposal of the board of Pilar Gómez Magan or Romero. This was seen as strange as the “Citizens” party presently hold the key to the future governance of the City of Torrevieja.
Pilar Gómez Magan and Paqui Parra are the key to an absolute majority for both the current pentapartito who now govern the city but also the opposition PP, for of they should side with the PP, this would effectively allow the Partido Popular and Citizens to govern the city with a one seat majority. Something truly remarkable at the session was that some prominent members of other political parties were also present. These councillors are presently part of the pentapartito, such as councillor and Deputy Mayor, the APTCe’s Domingo Soler, plus another candidate on the list of councillors for the last election, including others, who are considered as senior members in the formation of the APTCe.

Torrevieja confirmed as “poorest city in Spain” by Keith Nicol ALTHOUGH HE was one of the last of Torrevieja’s politicians to do so, Mayor José Manuel Dolon did eventually send in a letter of complaint to Spain’s statistical Institute, the INE regarding Torrevieja being regarded as the poorest city in Spain. The INE’s answer to the Mayor’s protest letter goes to confirm that the study and the data used are correct and the Mayor remarked that he is “embarrassed and hurt” by the result. The INE remarked that the data published at the time referred to the pattern that Torrevieja experienced in 2012. They stated in the study that Torrevieja had a total of 103,720 people, estimated to live in a total of 43,649 households. This was the over simplistic method used by the Institute of Statistics and the method was used to calculate the coefficient of household income, and not the total housing estimated to Torrevieja. However, at the time in 2012, according to the INE the city’s population was 118,427, indicating that if they had used this number as their denominator the final figure calculated would have meant that the result would have been much lower. However, the simplistic formula does not measure in pensioners, and their lack of work related income, which throws the entire calculation by the INE off and provides an answer with the wrong result that is very far from the estimated income. The INE president recalled that the formation, maintenance, and custody of the municipal census is the responsi-
bility of the City Council, corresponding to coordinate all INE municipal registers to avoid duplication as a result of entries in other municipalities or consulates, and covers births and deaths as recorded in civil registers, etc. Consequently, in trying to cover up their unsophisticated calculation method, the INE has rejected the complaint of the City of Torrevieja after the initial release of the data, indicating that the method used by that body does not match the one described in the complaint that has been raised, clarifying that the method involves dividing the total income of resident households in the city in question, between the number of resident households in the city. The INE added that both data numbers are obtained from administrative sources: the first variable- person’s income received in the tax agency and the number of households, while the latter is calculated from population recorded in the municipal registers and each city. Unfortunately, the Mayor also seemed to have completely missed the point that was immediately obvious to the majority of opposition politicians and the international community, in that the majority of householders in Torrevieja are pensioners, on a fixed income, not paying into the Spanish tax system, and thus are not in employment. Instead of addressing the real issue the Mayor decided to once again play the blame game and followed the same old route by mentioning that “27 years of government of the PP and its wasteful policies, waste
and corruption have brought us nothing but poverty and need, lavishly squandering resources and huge profits generated by the construction (not urbanization) mass of the municipality and the sale at a bargain price of the municipal heritage ground, we have to add the tremendous social cost brought about by the cutbacks in social policies implemented by the government popular, visible in the tremendous inequality gap that is also suffering in our city party.” To conclude his speech, José Manuel Dolon stated; “the municipal government does not like, and indeed is embarrassed by the data provided by the INE, but is useless to hide and we are committed to provide solutions to this fact, as they are not is aseptic statistical numbers, but affects the quality of life for many people living in Torrevieja.” Apart from political commentators wondering how and why such rhetoric as waste, corruption, inequality, social policies had anything to do with the INE calculation, much scorn has once again been played on the Mayor, for doing little else than try and promote his own politics and put down the previous Partido Popular governments. Looking on the bright side, one local real estate agent noted that since everyone now knows that Torrevieja is poor, that maybe it will keep all the robbers and thieves away from the city, as obviously the majority of home owners in Torrevieja can barely make a living and thus there is very little worth stealing in this poorest of Spanish cities.

Pilot cancer scheme at Marina Baixa hospital THE MARINA Baixa hospital in Villajoyosa is one of the first hospitals to take part in a new virtual network to link clinical trials with patients and professionals. by Jeanette Rice Called the Medbravo program the Villajoyosa hospital along with the University of San Juan, Alicante and the La Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia have been chosen to pilot the trial which has been specifically designed by a team of professionals crossing from computing to medicine. Headed by Aurelia Bustos, oncologist for Villajoyosa and San Juan the program is also supported by the head of the computing services at the San Juan hospital, Jose Maria Salinas. The programme will link clinical trials so that oncologists can see more easily the best trials to refer their patients to rather than having to check each hospital individually. A statement issued by the Ministry of Health said “this first virtual network in the world that aims to make research, specifically cancer clinical trials more accessible to professionals and patients.” Cancer patients who do not have appropriate testing centres can access others independent of the hospital where they may be receiving treatment. Jose Maria Salinas said “using data from trials around the world we are developing a digital infrastructure that gives each hospital a website to research trials and share information.” Patients and researchers will receive alerts on research that may be of interest to them and the tools to assess if the trials are relevant for their situation. The Medbravo programme will be continually evaluated and modified to ensure that it achieves the maximum benefit to the users before being rolled out to all hospitals.

MS Albatros for Torrevieja AFTER THE successful visit of the Phoenix Reisen’s MS Amadea as Torrevieja’s first every cruise ship last week, the Germany-based travel agency and cruise line has confirmed that they will be cruising to Torrevieja in 2016 with the elegant MS Albatros. Although a little older, the Albatros has enjoyed an illustrious life on the high seas. She was built in 1973 by Wärtsilä Shipyard in Helsinki for the luxury Royal Viking Line as Royal Viking Sea, and has also sailed under the names Royal Odyssey, Norwegian Star and Norwegian Crown. She was acquired by Phoenix Reisen who have been operating the ship as the MS Albatros since 2005. The Albatros was built as the third and last ship of the original trio of ships that started up the Royal Viking Line under the name Royal Viking Sea, measuring some 21.848 tons and her length was 177,70 meters. She was 25,20 meters wide and her draft measured 7,30 meters. Originally, she was designed for 536 passengers and 324 crew members, a true up-market cruise ship. The ship was delivered to Royal Viking Line at the 16th November 1973. In 1983 she was ‘stretched’ to 205,46 meters; her tonnage increased to 28.018 and she can now carry 812 passengers. Next year, the MS Albatros departs on a 17 day voyage from from Bremerhaven to Genoa. She reaches Torrevieja at 2pm on Saturday 8th October and stays until the early morning hours. The time is now ripe for the council, local entrepreneurs, the Costa Blanca Tourist Board plus the small and medium business association APYMECO to develop new ideas and design shore excursions and activities especially for the arriving passengers for this special occasion. The Costa Blanca Tourist Board have recently recognised the importance of the cruise industry
to the region and have started a special cruise department to develop the cruise business in the Alicante region. APYMECO have already met with representatives of the cruise line and will begin working on their own commercial plan in the near future, even though the visit is more than a year away. This is primarily because cruise line guests will be offered options on various shore excursions from December and since Torrevieja do not at present have anything to offer, a new plan of action for this marketplace must be put into place. The Pentapartito team will need to also look at the possibilities open to them to promote both this cruise and expand the valuable cruise marketplace for Torrevieja. Having shown their inexperience in the run up to arrival of the MS Amadea last week, it’s hoped they have learnt a lot from the arrival of the Cruise Ship and that now the local council has a better understanding on what the cruise ship business is about, local entrepreneurs are optimistic that the council will be more open and organised for the planned visit next year. Regarding shore excursions, various options do exist including sailing and nautical experiences, local tours on foot, bike, tourist train and Segways, museum visits, tours of the Salt works, shopping at the Habaneras Centre and visiting downtown, plus the opportunity to produce a special performance for cruise line guests in one of the city’s theatres and gastronomic events. All this takes time and knowledge and the hope is that all local political parties, commercial departments and various cruise consultants will bond together to make the visit of the MS Albatros a roaring success.

The Pentapartito hides further cuts by Keith Nicol
LAST WEEK, more-or-less after the installation of a couple of fire extinguishers, an emergency exit sign and removal of barriers, the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre opened again for business. However, some other amenities in Torrevieja remain closed. PP opposition councillor Luis Maria Pizana Boj pointed out that the Acequión local library remains closed in the evenings and that the Council has stopped providing the 24 hours classroom service in the study room of the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre. Regarding culture, not a single new event has been announced. No programming or information, unwarranted closures, cuts in services, a significant decrease in administrative barriers and less cultural activity seem to be the best features of cultural management that the pentapartito council has to offer. Luis Maria Pizana Boj, said on Wednesday morning that the Council continue to introduce cuts in municipal utilities that the pentapartito try to hide, especially the area of culture. The Acequión library remains closed in the evenings al-
though pentapartito leader Jose Manuel Dolon, when asked at the council meeting said: “was already solved and for not us to worry.’’ However, it remains closed. In addition, Luis Maria Pizana, revealed that 24 hours available for classroom study at the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre remains closed since the reopening of the same, without any explanation from any of the members Penpatapartito saying: “they have taken the habit of removing services that are highly valued by citizens and trying to do this unnoticed. These are things that are a part of Torrevieja, and many citizens do not realize the disaster that is being assumed by the pentapartito in every aspect of their management policies. Another aspect that is causing much concern among the many lovers of culture in Torrevieja is that they seem to have closed the Exhibition Hall “Vista Alegre”. In conclusion, Councillor of the Municipal Partido Popular noted the concern in the local cultural fabric of the city saying: “the people of the world of culture are very concerned. It’s not just that no programming or information has
Virgen del Carmen has stopped the popular 24 hours of study time
been announced, or cultural buildings have suffered unwarranted closures, cuts in services or significant drop in activity of a city that breathes culture through and through. The groups are very worried about the red tape which they are facing to perform activities in public spaces and are having to move their performances to places like the much smaller main hall of the Cultural Society Casino of Torrevieja, where there is not enough space for the relevant audience. Another major concern is that especially with the groups of international residents, they are seeking alternatives and performing in other municipalities in the area.”

Too good to be true I am writing to warn about the promotion in Europe of properties in Spain by the Spanish government. You buy now, and really pay later. I was extremely annoyed when I read about this promotion. I will relate my story about what was then a reasonably priced purchase. In 2013 I found an old cortijo that someone had gutted and added a large extension to, but had no roof nor electricity. It had permission to reform to a 240m2 property which was uninhabitable. I agreed a purchase price of 61,500€ to include various equipment. The purchase concluded in November 2014 with no problems. Then the big shock came in April 2015. I received a demand from Hacienda for 800€ unpaid taxes as my property was undervalued! I was incensed because I am a pensioner with small UK pension and my funds were low having spent a considerable sum on reforming works to the cortijo. I paid this money for taxes through my solicitor to get this huge tax off my back. Two weeks later I received another demand for 4,750€, this time because my property was now valued at 115,000€ - this amount being the difference between what I had paid on purchase and the further 800€! My solicitor said to send a cheque and they would send it on for you. They seem to think that we all earn money at the same rate as these thieves. I wrote back and put them straight! They said to fight it would cost maybe around 3,500€, so was it worth it? How can the Hacienda revalue when they haven’t seen the property? Yes the government needs taxes, so why don’t they chase the black economy instead of this back-door tax on property purchasers? I found a company of asesores that supposedly specialised in appealing these demands. So I went with them and gave them power of attorney, another 80€....then they made the appeal. In June the Hacienda said the appeal was unsuccessful, I wrote back to the asesores and said I just do not have this money. I budgeted when I purchased the cortijo and I don’t have the money to pay them. I am still awaiting the reply from Hacienda. So this is a warning about buying cheap property in Spain. If it seems to good to be true, it very likely is. Watch out, the government double the value of the property on paper so that they can fleece you after the purchase. Stephen Harper, La Marina
Slow to listen, quick to interrupt Now we can check Why don’t British firms give their staff clear training in customer care? I had a call from what sounded like a Scottish lady who immediately started to tell me that her firm could offer me free advice. I tried to tell her we did not need it, but she interrupted me and became aggressive when I said that we did not need her firm or any other firm’s advice and if or when I did I would research it before calling in a firm.
Why are these sales people not told to listen and not interrupt people? After stating whom they represent, then they should ask how long one has been living in Spain. One thing I would like to say to these sales people, nothing in this world is for free and people like me know that the advice would lead to more cost. Their free advice will cost something. I must point out this is not the first time we have been offered ‘free’ advice.
Then there are the ones who ring us up offering to do work outside my house. It appears that they are not interested to find out if one’s accommodation is a flat, or rent, only a quick sale. Anyone with any sense would find their own workmen. All I can say these people are very desperate, slow to listen and quick to interrupt. I could go on and on but I don’t want to bore you to tears. David Reid, Benidorm
THANKS RTN for previously printing the e-mails regarding high gas bills. My neighbour and I are both having it installed and we were not aware of the tariffs... (all the paperwork is in spanish) So at least we can check on this before things like this happen. Thanking you once again. Ann Thomas, Quesada
Clean up! The council are doing a good job of getting bars and restaurants to get their paperwork in order but can they please do something about dog owners who do not pick up after their dogs have been to the toilet! It’s like a minefield of dog poo in and around Torrevieja, it’s a disgrace. There is hardly a 100 yard stretch of pavement without a big dollop of poo bang smack in the middle of the pavement. Clean up Torrevieja!!

Remember going to the Hades that was the Saturday Morning Matinees? You’d buy your own ticket (A tanner – 2.5p. Children) nip down to the loo conveniently located by the emergency exit and let in your 15 rapscallion mates gratis – okay you didn’t – Goody Goody! You had to pity the poor old duffer though, rising from the bowels of the building during the interval playing jaunty tunes on the Wurlitzer Pipe Organ to the venting of adolescent spleen “Bog Off Baldy. We want Flash Gordon duffing up Ming The Merciless!” Something else top shelf back then strolling into a Cinema anytime of the day and joining the film halfway through and asking the fellow in the next seat “What’s happened so far Old Bean?” and he’d give you either a succinct Barry Normanesque critique or a bunch of fives. Also you could stay watching until the bit you walked in on comes around again – in fact you could spend the entire day & night there if you had no social skills, friends, an actual life or were Rozzer Dodging. Look if you haven’t reached your 50th Birthday yet I understand your bemusement, I could be trying to explain the Mandarin Alphabet. Back then it was ‘U’ suitable for all, ‘A’ under 14s must be accompanied by an adult,
‘X’ over 16s only. With the ‘A’ category if you were under-age and no handy adult to go with and you couldn’t fake it because when you tried - as a 12 year old - a butch male voice it sounded like you were a yodelling Von Trapp (which could also be Cockney rhyming slang for your linguistic performance failing to fool the Old Biddy in the Box Office). Therefore you’d hang around outside the Cinema waiting for a couple to pitch up and ask them if you could go in with them to which most would say “YES BUT DON’T SIT ANYWHERE NEAR US!” My Mum always said “Only ask ordinary, average, respectable looking couples.” Well to put a rather macabre twist on things this was the era of Ian Brady & Myra Hindley looking very ordinary, average and yes, respectable. In the next RTN, how I got pally - in my local Flea Pit - with one of the last men to be hanged in England. Gotcha! Yes I Have! Next Week! This Page!

Stan Dibble: Get up and do it STAN DIBBLE is an inspiration to many retirees that make the move to the Costa Blanca.
by Keith Nicol
The very thought of him never having anything to do never once crosses his mind, for as long as he is able to do so, Stan stays fit by participating in as many different sports and pastimes as he can fit in. He’s living proof that you really can live life to the fullest in your twilight years while your body is willing and able. His catchphrase is: “Just get up and do it.” And while this article will obviously be the source of some serious ribbing and amusement from his many friends, there are many people almost half his age who could benefit by thinking ahead and taking his advice about following a healthy Mediterranean diet and staying in shape, so they can look forward to an active retirement. Stan moved to Spain 13 years ago, first settling in El Galan but has called Los Montesinos home for the past seven. He says he moved to Spain because of a number of factors: being disillusioned by life in the UK and the cold and wet weather. So how does Stan keep busy? Let’s count a few of the ways: cycling, petanca, pool, walking football, swimming, golf and supporting his local football team, along with a vibrant social life with his many friends.
One of the first sports Stan came to grips with in Spain was petanca, which he had never played seriously before moving here. He helped create the Las Salinas Petanca League and served as president for its first two years. Presently he is Vice President of the Full Monte, the supporters club for CD Montesinos football team having also served as Membership Secretary. He attends all the home games and as many away games as his schedule allows and is the official photographer for the team. When it comes to less active but still skilful activities, this year he received the Pool Player of the Year award in the local pool league at Bobby Joe’s Bar where he plays twice a week. Although he took a break for a couple of years, Stan has recently started playing golf once a week and stays in great shape by cycling at least 20 kilometres per trip, three days a week, along with taking part in various events and competitions. He’s particularly proud of being the main protagonist in the promotion of Walking Football in the region, overseeing the 40 plus players called the Monte Mentals, plus acting as event organiser, referee and player, depending on the occasion. The sport now has almost a dozen clubs in the region with Stan organising both local tournaments and visiting teams from England to come and play in Los Montesinos. When it comes to keeping busy, Stan says: “Just get up and do it. People often ask me what there is to do to keep busy in Spain and I tell them that there are so many possibilities that there is no reason to just sit there and do nothing. We have fantastic weather, the sun is shining, and it’s a great way to stay young, keep in shape and make lots of friends.” For those 55 and over that would like to play or find out more about Walking Football, you can contact Stan at: montestan@gmail.com. And before you think to yourself, ‘I’m too old to get up and do it,’ Stan will celebrate his 78th birthday in December.

Retirement – No way, not yet
THANK GOODNESS it´s that time of year when Spain becomes ours again to enjoy fully. Of course, I am delighted for the Spanish economy that it was a bumper year for tourism.
by
Jennifer Cunningham
The restaurants and bars in Javea and, I am sure elsewhere, have all been constantly busy. How the staff manage to keep sane, working the very long hours and dealing with a vast amount of tourists, especially in this summers heat, is admirable. At present September’s weather is perfect – long may it continue. I do not enjoy the winter months of January, February and March and I smile when I see the chiringuitos being built once more on the beach front. I am so glad to be still enjoying life and being reasonably fit and well, although my diabetes does get in the way some times. Due to my fairly strict diet and regular exercise, I can keep active and healthy. Therefore, it was a surprise to me to hear from a number of people that I was thinking of retiring soon. Of course I have had those thoughts for some years now, as I am sure there are many of you who have also dreamt of taking early retirement and it does, of course, take some planning. No, I am not ready to retire. All the time I am able and happy to, I will continue to be at the helm of my company. One of the biggest challenges, especially in Spain, is in employing good staff. Managing 25 staff is not easy, but my Managers and I continue to do our best. I am now able to reduce my working hours slightly due to good delegation, organized management and responsible staff. I often think what would I do without Jennifer Cunningham Consultants? – possibly die of boredom. I have worked hard from the age of 15
and it has always been a big part of my life. Being a Gemini, I need to be challenged constantly. Sometimes, I am sure, this is not easy to live with, but I can assure you it is never boring. Talking of retirement, I understand that there are at long last, people purchasing properties once again, currently there are more Belgians than British arriving in Spain to live. Unlike us, the French speaking Belgians have very little support, not even a newspaper or radio programme. We are so fortunate in comparison. This is, of course, due to our spirit of adventure and the vast number of Expats. Also as the UK is a trading nation, some of us are always ready to take on a challenge and work hard in creating a business in other parts of the world. This is exactly what has occurred in parts of Spain, we saw an opportunity to move to another part of Europe with lovely weather and either just retire and enjoy the life or create a business. Some of whom have succeeded whilst others have failed. Sadly, because of the corruption which was vast a few years ago, there are far too many shocking stories regarding property deals. Hopefully much of this has stopped, but still take care when thinking of living in Spain. Do not be persuaded to purchase a property or business without seeking independent professional advice. None of you would ever consider doing this in the UK. Just because the sun shines here, makes no difference. This is where my company can help you. I have re-launched Ex Pat Services. I will be advertising in
the local newspapers on a regular basis, with the services my company can offer, not only for the British. All the companies are fully regulated to carry out business in Spain so you can be assured that you will be given the best advice. Of course, the core of my business is general insurance and I am delighted to inform you that Liberty Seguros are offering cash back on new policies for both car and house. By insuring your car, fully comprehensive, and paying by direct debit, either from a Spanish bank or an account in your own country, you will receive €50 cash back. If paid by alternative means, Liberty Seguros is offering a €20 petrol token. You will also receive €50 cash back from Liberty for a house insurance policy, if paying by direct debit, or a €20 Cortes Ingles voucher (which can be used in Super Cor) if paying by any other method. This offer is available for house policies in excess of €225.00. The house and the car policies provide very good protection for you and your family and with our own Claims Department assisting you with any claims you may have, saving you time and money. Both these offers are applicable until the end of this year. Every little bit helps. To help even further, there are discounts on ASSSA health insurance for life, and along with the Funeral plans, they are both available on monthly direct debit payments with no interest charged. Please contact one of my offices or visit the website, for further information or a quotation.

Are you a co-owner of a property in Spain? Do you have problems with other co-owners? WE RECEIVE many enquiries from people who co-own property in Spain. THIS CO-OWNERSHIP can cause problems, such as when it is the result of an inheritance in which several heirs have inherited a property and they are not able to agree to sell it; or a house purchased with a former partner with whom there is no longer a good relation and who refuses to pay the mortgage payments / property maintenance; or the purchase of a property with a former job-partner or colleague with whom we no longer work etc. The best thing to do in these cases is to try to reach an agreement, so a co-owner keeps the whole property compensating the others (buying them out), or if not possible, to sell the property to a third party and distribute the money between the coowners. Sometimes, whilst we may no longer wish to be co-owners of the property, it is not always possible to reach any agreement because the other owners refuse to sell or buy, refuse to pay and fulďŹ ll their obligations, etc. . In these cases, you should know that the Article 400 of the Spanish Civil Code, provides what is the base of the legal action known as the action of division of the common asset, declaring that a co-owner could not be obliged to remain in the community. Any of the co-owners could apply at any time, for the common good to be divided. Therefore, if it is impossible to agree with the other
co-owners, you could ask the court for the division of the common good (the property), and if the property cannot be divided and distributed among the owners, because it is indivisible, the property will be normally sold at a court public auction. This solution is not ideal, as this is a legal procedure which terminates with a public auction, where the price that would be obtained for the property would normally be lower than the market price. Unfortunately, sometimes it is the only alternative. If you are in this situation, it is very advisable to get evidence that you have tried to reach an agreement, and if it is not possible, it is really important to be the ďŹ rst to start the legal proceedings for the division of the common good in the
court, before the rest of the co-owners, because, if you are the respondent, you could be asked by the court to pay the legal costs of the court proceedings, which in these cases are usually high. Therefore, if you are in this situation and you do not want to remain co-owner with others of a property in Spain, Contact Us.

Nowhere to turn
by
Christina Brady
Regional Manager of Blacktower Costa Blanca
INCREASINGLY PEOPLE are becoming more and more frustrated as to where to put their money to make it work for them. At the moment there seems to be no good news. A UK interest rate rise seems to be getting further and further away with the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) pushing back its prediction for the first rate rise in six years from February to the summer of 2016 at the earliest. This is due mainly to the prediction that the rate of growth in the UK economy will start to slow from 2.5 per cent this year to two per cent in 2016 and 1.7 per cent between 2017 and 2020. Cebr gave a number of explanations for its gloomier outlook. It noted that export prospects and business investment are being held back by a general global economic slowdown, driven by significant weakness in China in particular and emerging markets more generally. It also said the level of consumer inflation is expected to remain below the Bank of England’s target of two per cent until 2017, easing the pressure on the Bank to increase rates. Some people especially expats have looked to the UK buy to let market as a good investment for their money, hoping for good renal income. The changes to the buy to let tax rules announced by the UK Chancellor in the last budget ( being phased in from 2017 to 2020) will mean the buy to let bonanza in the UK for many is about to end. Firstly he is ending the wear and tear allowance, thereby stopping investors deducting 10% of annual rent from income; also he has dramatically reduced the tax relief on mortgagees for buy to let. Under new rules a much smaller amount will be able to be deducted – turning once profitable buy to lets into loss making operations. What next you may ask yourself? Only time will tell, but here at Blacktower financial management we work hard with all our clients to find the best and most tax efficient investment plan to suit your individual needs. We are completely independent so can offer you products from various providers from across the financial market place. Top tips to mentor engagement Somewhere along the line, you will find yourself in a network situation whereby your 10 minute partner is speaking your language and engaging with you at your level. Whether you are building a life or a business, you are going to need advice and encouragement. There is always a need for a guiding hand with words of wisdom. Mentoring and being a mentor – are gifts worth their weight in gold. I have had lots of mentors in my life who have had a helping hand in shaping my courage. Here are my top tips… Ask Politely - If there is someone who you gravitate towards, then speak up and give them your pitch. Have the confidence that they will say yes, “I have some time to answer your questions.” The worst they can say is, “Sorry, no time, too busy. Good luck.” Open the Door - If they do say yes – tell them WHY YOU IDENTIFY with them – so you are both on the same page in your minds-eye. Get Organised - Most people like order, so be wellprepared with your questions and don’t waste time with silly small talk. Get right down to business and sort your stuff – while you have your mentors ear! Find Your Holes – Face the facts that you don’t know
everything, so find a mentor who will help you fill in your information holes. Fine someone who likes a challenge and solving life’s problems and / or business problems. Their different approach to a problem might just be the one potential you never thought existed. Have empathy – You need empathy with everyone, and with your mentor, so even if you do not agree with an idea – at least try and understand it so that you both respect each other views. This will greatly help your decision-making process. Better in a Bunch – Discovering more than one mentor will help you to build “multi-perspectives”. No one person has all the answers, so choose different mentors with different backgrounds and experiences to help shape your goals and their outcomes – in more holistic ways. Mutual Give and Take - The mentor / mentee relationship can never be a one-way engagement. Try to find out what your mentor wishes in return. Most great mentors understand that they are helping to shape your future, but never assume because positive unions are productive and they need to be win-win.

MAKING GOOD use of any olives you produce HARVESTING The three main objectives of harvesting olives are; Pick when ready for preparing eating olives or making olive oil, to cause as little bruising as possible and cause as little damage to the trees as possible. Olives for eating need to picked while still firm. Olives for oil can be picked at the same stage or left to fully swell to maximize the overall yields. Some high quality producers still pick by hand. I follow and recommend this practice for home production. However most olives are allowed to fall naturally or racked, knocked off with long canes, or shaken off with mechanical tree shakers onto nets and then transferred to plastic boxes which hold 20 kilos. In some areas, to reduce harvesting costs, the ground under trees is laid bare by using weed killers two weeks before shaking the olives onto the ground when they are blown or brushed into heaps for sacking. What is done commercially is obviously driven by the increasing cost of agricultural labour. Yields can vary from 10 to 110 kilos or more per tree depending on the age health and pruning of the tree, and the summer and autumn sunshine and rainfalls.
PICKLING OLIVES TO EAT See chapter 78 of ‘Growing Healthy Fruit in Spain’ for our favourite methods and recipes.
PRODUCING OLIVE OIL To extract high quality oil from olives they need to be processed as soon after their harvesting as possible to minimise the onset of fermentation that can spoil the taste of the end product. The process follows the following process. Riddling to remove leaves and stones, washing if allowed to fall on the ground before harvesting, the picking out of obviously bad olives, milling/mashing the olives to create a paste, pressing of the paste to extract the oil and water and then the separation of the oil from the oil/water mix and pouring into storage vessels. Historically earthen ware storage jars or barrels were used but these days quality plastic bottles or storage tanks are used. There are four possibilities for the processing of olive to oil. 1. Purchase a manually or power operated mill/masher and press yourself or with a group of friends. Small powered presses cost a little over 2000 Euros for processing 40 kilo batches and 8000 Euros for 200 kilo batches. 2. Arrange for a friend or local villager to do the pressing for you on in a historic or new old style press. Typically, a minimum of 200 kilos of olives must be delivered to the mill for you to have your olives pressed alone. Smaller quantities would be mixed with other small batches. Typical processing charges are 20 to 25 cents a kilo. With be an artisan cold pressing and it may be possible to separate the first extra extra virgin oil from the second phase extra virgin and virgin olive oils which are extracted as the press pressure is increased.
3. Arrange for a larger agricultural cooperative mill to process your olives mixed in with those of other growers. The quantity of olive oil you receive will be based on the average litres/kilo for the day or an estimate of the yields of the quality of olives you are feeding in. Charges are about the same as for ‘2’. Old mills will still use a cold process and you will get good quality extra virgin olive oil. New mills may use warmer conditions to increase the speed and extent of extracted oil and deliver you virgin olive oil. Some mills will use hot water and steam to extract the final oil content from the byproduct cake of solids. This refined oil is of high acidity and is blended with better quality olive oil to produce the less expensive olive oils. Commercially olive oils are classified in descending quality order as Extra Virgin, Virgin, Ordinary Virgin Olive Oil, Olive Oil, Refined Olive oil, Lamp Oil. The ranking of the first three is on the basis of a number of characteristics including taste smell colour and acidity level. Olive Oil often includes quantities of Refined Oil blended with Virgin Olive Oil. The standard maximum acceptable acidity levels are 1.0% for extra virgin, 2.0% for virgin and 3.3% for ordinary virgin.A good yield is a litre of oil from five kilo of olives. A poor yield from poor olives can be as little as a litre from 7 or 8 kilos. Bottled olive oil is best stored in a cool dark place. Good quality oil can be stored for many years. It is not usual or desirable to add preservatives. I remember being able to share a thirty year old wooden barrel of olive oil found, covered in encrusted dust in a London wine cellar. It was wonderful oil.

The Palace Variety Show 2015
xxxx
ONE OF the stars of this year’s show is Stacey Solomon, who came third behind Joe McElderry and Olly Murs in the sixth series of X Factor in 2009, and then went on to be crowned Queen of the Jungle, winning “I’m A Celebrity” in 2010. Stacey is rarely off our screens these days. As well as hosting “Model Dog” she is also the face of New Look, and has launched her own line of fashion wear. Also making an appearance alongside Stacey on the night will be “The One And Only” Chesney Hawkes. At nineteen he landed the lead role in the film “Buddy’s Song” with Roger Daltry (The Who). Chesney was signed to sing the soundtrack but suddenly found himself as one of the first teenagers in pop history to bag the number one slot with a debut release. Comedy this year is big on the agenda with legendary Irish comedian Jimmy Cricket “Come ere there’s more”. As we go to press Jimmy has just been given a Papal Knighthood by Pope Francis for his services to charity. Another great comic Duncan “Chase Me” Norvelle makes his second appearance at The Palace. He last performed here in 2009 with “The Ricky Tomlinson Laughter Show” Josh Daniels is a modern day comedian who is well established with The Jongleurs Comedy Clubs and is a regular at the famous Comedy Store. Josh creates belly laughs at every comedy club he plays. On the bill this year is Vijay a singer with smooth silky tones. He was the lead singer with the Gillettes for many years and toured extensively around the world. This year a sixty piece choir Melody Makers International will close the first half of the show. Our regular dance troop Compania De Flamenco JM will bring their usual flash of passion and colour. They also have some real surprises in their show this year. They will be joined by local talented song goddesses Nikki G and Kylie Burgazzi. Rob Bonovox will be belting out the tunes to help celebrate Tony Kelly and his gorgeous wife Gabby´s Silver wedding anniversary. And to take you through the whole evening is compere Stevie Spit. This will be the best show yet by far. This years show is to raise much needed funds for Elche Childrens Home and Help 4 Heroes. Representatives from both Charities will be there on the night helping out.
Tickets this year are 25€ for standard and 50€ for VIP which includes front of house seating, food and entry to the aftershow party. For tickets call the box office tel: 965 851 660.

A Mars opposition takes its toll as things will slow down just when you really need answers. This week’s action with Neptune brings a focus on financial energies that need to be dealt with since you are openly accountable, but not responsible, for recent economic decisions. Have your say and tighten your belt accordingly, but only if you have to. Loving Venus makes an entrance into a somewhat suspicious Virgo midweek, bringing up all kinds of indecisive and negative energies. You may feel as if you are being sorely tested but during this time you are merely consolidating all that you hold dear and sending out a positive message that you are not to be messed with. Mercury sextiles with Saturn, and it would seem as if you are pulling out all the stops in an effort to make changes and to resolve a situation which veers somewhat out of control,. It is clear that whilst someone is being economical with the truth that there is, nevertheless, an agenda this week that has to be fully taken on board. As the Sun sets on Pluto there is a need to read the small print on something before you get to sign. Compromise has brought new terms into play, and it is vital that you take this chance to ensure that what you get is what you want; since there will be no turning back this time. You simply have bigger fish to fry right now and all that this entails! Pluto brings up somethings that were best left well alone. You have moved on now and thankfully things aren’t what they used to be any more. Whilst distant memories are stirred this week it isn’t nostalgia that brings you back to reality, but a need to ensure that the past actions that have caused you so such stress are never, ever, to be repeated. Venus enters with love and a driving passion. You are well capable of showing your love in different ways but this week ahead heralds a time of decision, resolve and forgiveness. In setting the rules for the future your loving respect of the difficulties of the past reflect openly, and though you have no regrets, you do have much to achieve. You are in the middle of something and are very unsure that the results will bring any good to anyone anyway. Whilst it is very good to take stock, it is also vitally sure that those elements of the past that are tinged with fear need to be eradicated if new standards are to be met, and a brighter more certain future secured for you and for all concerned. You are highly aware that things are not what they seem to be right now. Your highly charged psychic senses are telling you to wait and see before you make any relevant moves. In hindsight there is something to be said for stalling for time since Pluto influences the Sun this week and seems to be putting a bit of a spoke in your wheels right now. Loyalty means so much to you, and it would seem as if somehow, somebody has let you down. As you are currently unsure of the full situation do not assume anything since there are a myriad of reasons between why and why not right now. Neptune appears in opposition and may just be your saviour since you can examine other ways and means. Putting all your cards on the table is a show that you have absolutely nothing to hide but everything to be gained by playing along with current trends. Whilst somebody has rubbed you up the wrong way there is always a reason for everything, as you are about to find out. Mercury sextiles Saturn bringing you both compensation and reward. Keep your temper even if those around you seem to be losing theirs. there are no excuses for what has happened, but you are sure as hell going to ensure that they never happen again. An offer comes from out of the blue, and though it may seem to be too good to be true, follow your feelings because you know what you are really capable of. Neptune is strengthened by the positively charged energy of an ebullient Mars. Things aren’t what they used to be but they could very well be better if you let things lie and throw caution to the wind. Your own set of values keeps you in check, and it is vital that you see both sides of the equation now since doors seem to be opening to you again.
If It’s Your Birthday This Week
DO NOT let selfish pride mar what’s in store for you now. Accept that the same old, same old, is just like a cracked record playing the same tune; and listen to the song that you are, all the time, singing inside yourself!
Spirit children
IT IS sadly true that there are a lot of Children in Spirit. These mostly are deaths of unborn babies or fatalities in childbirth though, having said that, there are absolutely children of all varying ages in the Spirit World. These children are not alone generally and it is amazing to see how they are so lovingly taken care of in such a different vibration to our own here on Earth. It is heartening to see that relatives and friends and childcare experts take the lead and connect with children to ensure that they are given tender loving care. Spirit assists with this and ensures that they are not left to their own devices until they are indeed old enough to carry on with their spiritual journey in whichever direction it may take them. Spirit nurseries take care of the very young. Here there are two very noteworthy circumstances to report, the first being that children in Spirit do not grow as they would have done on Earth. The process of thriving is denied them and this means that their development is somewhat slower than it would naturally be here amongst us. There is no suffering in the slowing down of life enhancing process, but here on Earth there is generally an acceleration that generally sees quicker results. It is also true that nobody is able to coach Spirit children to talk. Because they are denied the audio clues provided by an Earthly life they can appear to talk in gurgles just like babies, communicating by energy rather then the acceptable human form of verbal. When I was younger I played with Spirit Children. My Mother was contemplating psychiatric intervention for me as a young boy because I seemed to be communicating with people that she was unable to see. Luckily a friend of my Mothers suggested that because I had shown evidence of my psychic skills from the age of seven years old, that I was actually seeing things that only a psychic could see. She was right of course. In the garden aged eight I would love to play with psychic children. My group of children had each died from influenza and had been looked after in a Children’s ward of an old hospital that was close by. They were of varying ages and came from varied past times. The two Victorian girls were very shy but used to recite beautiful things to me. They appeared to sit and to read empty books but they were in fact tomes of poems and old stories that appeared to go straight to my heart. These two girls were sometimes joined by a boisterous boy and we would end up playing hide and seek. I hated playing this game with them because it was never my turn to hide, and because it meant that when my eyes were closed they would vanish away and I would not seem them all again for a while. It was always that way, and it was their way of returning to where they should be without me having any clue as to how or where they actually did come from. I remember playing with a ball one day when my Mother opened the window onto the garden, and suddenly everything stopped, my three favourite playmates froze; and it was obvious to me then that my Mother was not going to be able to see them because she asked me what I was doing. From that day I realised that there were things that I could see that she couldn’t; and that it would take me all my life to tell others of my experiences of psychic phenomena. That is basically what I have done in my life, but thankfully I have not been alone with this since I have encountered various people on my journey who are open to see what I see, though maybe not exactly. Some people are gifted to hear, some to see and some to perceive, luckily as an all rounder I was given a little bit of each; and I use all three skills daily in my spiritual work. Children are always the very first to come through in readings. They are generally very impatient or cannot hold back when given the opportunity that allows them to be identified and cherished. Indeed just as living children do not hold back their feelings, so too do Spirit children tell me the truth about their surroundings, their feelings and their coming to terms with life in a different vibration. Mostly such children are not sad or remorseful and they appear to be loved and well cared for since Spirit provides a good environment in which the soul can live very comfortably. Maybe just more comfortably than was possible during an Earthly life. My twin brother died after 38 minutes of life, whilst I clung onto my life even though I was the size of a one pound note and weighed ounces. I have thrived to live sixty one years on this Earth, but when I think of my brother just sometimes do I wonder, which one of us was the lucky one? I just know, of course, it was me!

KENNY, I went to see a psychic and she used tarot cards. The Death card kept coming up, and it has worried me that something really is going to happen to somebody in my family, though it hasn’t yet. Peter Mc.B. Peter, the Death card does not necessarily mean the death of anybody, it often symbolises the need to close down on something and to look for other opportunities. You do not mention how this psychic qualified the appearance of the death card to you, so it is hard to read between the lines. It rarely means an actual death however, and fear should not be the result of any psychic activity! I strongly predict some positive and inspiring changes are in the pipeline for you right now.

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.
How do I tell her? I have lost my job and don’t know how to tell my wife. I have been going out, for the last two weeks, just wandering around the shopping centre. She is still spending money like it is going out of fashion, and this is part of the problem. I don’t want to have to tell her we have to make savings.
I am sorry to hear you have lost your job. You must be feeling quite miserable, and the added pressure of not telling the truth, will be dragging you down. But unless you have something else lined up, you will have no choice but to tell her sooner or later. A loving wife will be understanding. A problem shared is a problem halved, and keeping things to yourself will not solve anything. Once this is out in the open, you will feel much better. Sit down together and make some short term economies, and start looking for another job.
Suspicious calls My wife took a job working in England, one month working away, and then one month in Spain. She said it would only be until I found work. It has been six months now, and one day I found a mobile telephone in her bag, that I didn’t know she had. I found records of phone calls from someone called Sam. I confronted her but she said Sam was a girl. She also won’t give up the job now. She’s acting differently, and won‘t talk about it. It is suspicious that your wife has a mobile phone that you didn’t know about. ‘Sam’ could indeed be a girl, but your curiosity is understandable. Are these the only calls registered to this phone? If so, that is dubious in itself, considering you didn‘t know she had a second phone. If she won’t talk to you, have you thought about calling ‘Sam’s’ number? Your wife has given you reason to be worried about your marriage, and you need to get to the bottom of things. Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Email your question to agonyaunt@roundtownnews.com or Sara is available for private consultations, telephone 650 054 467.

Artists For Refugees in Villamartin
OVER THE last couple of weeks all of us has been moved by images of immigrants fleeing troubled zones and especially photos of dead children on beaches, who were in search of a better life. by Keith Nicol A very special concert has been organised by Artists for Refugees on 12th October at VillaMartin Plaza, Orihuela Costa. Dozens of local artists and business are putting on a very special concert and fundraising day to raise much needed funds, supplies and awareness of the plight faced by many migrants who try to make the dangerous crossing by sea to reach Europe. Three charities have been selected to benefit from the event, all of whom have personnel on the ground in the zones where immigrants are fleeing to: ‘Save The Children’; ‘Casitas’ and ‘MOAS’ Migrant Offshore Aid Station. Pink Floyd’s Dave Gilmour is also donating heavily to this cause. Dave‘s offer is that for every £5,300 raised, which is the cost of running the boat for a day, he will donate the same amount thereby ensuring the boat can run for another day. Monday 12th October, is also a Red Day: a Spanish National holiday. The event starts at 2pm and includes many
local bands such Kolted, The Streeters, Pinnacles, Los Duques, Let it Roll, Backyard Session, Steve Plant, Riverside Trails, Tim Taylor, Tommy ‘Meet Laaf’ Taylor and Red Strokes. Local businesses are all playing their part and getting involved and offering some really interesting raffle prizes such as La Bocana Water Centre in Torrevieja, who have donated a free Waterski session and local beauty business, Vanilla, where the staff are running a sponsored SOBER for OCTOBER. If you have something you would like to donate – please message the event organisers through the Facebook page or contact Steven Ahmed at the Hen’s Teeth in the Villa Martin Plaza. Arrangements are also being made for clothes donations to be accepted on the day by the Red Cross to be shipped directly to where they are most needed, especially as in many of these areas winter is about to set in and thousands of families are only housed in tents. Toledo-Consuegra-Aranjuez TOLEDO WAS once the capital city of Spain. It is still regarded as the religious capital of the country.
ITS STRONG city walls bear testament to the many struggles which have taken place in an attempt to dominate this city. Enter by Bisagra gate – meaning “blood gate” and you are immediately surrounded by medieval Spain. Damascene Jewellery which originated in Damascus is still produced here by tradesmen whose families have practised this art for generations. Toledo steel products such as knives swords and Jewellery are much sought after. This city was the centre of the Spanish inquisition and appropriately is built round a massive and extremely ornate cathedral. The history of Toledo is not without violence and even played a major role in the Spanish
civil war of the 20th century. This part of Spain has endured may wars and battles. Travelling not too far from Toledo we will visit the town of Consuegra where the Saffron Festival is taking place and is dedicated to this unique spice. This expansive spice is derived from the flowers that grow in this region. A cook off using this delicate spice, residents wearing traditional clothes and a castle re-enactment, combined with its many windmills and its castle this is a wonderful day out for everyone to enjoy. Not far from here is another very different city. The city of Aranjuez . There are no city walls here. Nor is there a
prestigious cathedral. Instead you have sumptuous palaces, reminiscent of the French Palace of Versailles. Fountains, flower beds, and broad leafed trees fill parklands which are encircled by the ample waters of the river Tajo. For this was the playground of the well off catholic monarchs of medieval Spain. These 3 cities would definitely be on the “must see” list of any serious traveller in Spain. These are so easy to see with David’s Coachtrips SL. All 3 cities are visited on a 4 day excursion from Torrevieja. Based in a 3* hotel in the old city of Toledo B&B and costing only 205€.

Snoop Dog has been on this page a few times, and each time I basically poked fun at his antics with his beloved marijuana, but all that now needs to change. The 43 year old was born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr in Long Beach California, started making music in 1993, and made quite a name for himself with his over-the-top image and outrageously sexist style in his videos. Snoop has trimmed back his music career and now plans to join the rapidly growing marijuana industry by spreading awareness of the drug’s medical benefits, but some wonder if icons like him are good for the industry. Two weeks ago our hero set up a website called ´Merry Jane ´ that includes news and information to give marijuana enthusiasts a place to share, and read, about their hobby! Describing the site on US radio he said “I intend to include cooking tutorials, celebrity appearances and even business advice for ganga-prenuers,” but enough of the funnies as, like I said, Snoop intends to become part of the mainstream shift that has seen legalising marijuana become high on the agenda at the Senate in Washington. With the elections next year each party´s stance on this hot potato of a subject is now certain to be part of the winning ticket. Marijuana has the potential to contain the balance of power, but having Snoop Dogg floating about with his nutball image and all else seems to have generated a few enemies for him within the political system. Not good is that! Snoop Dogg has been a pioneer of the cause for legalising marijuana for many years, and in the true free spirit of America, should the bill be passed, the least they could do is Knight the man, or whatever it is they do over there!.

World Day of Tourism with water sports
A demonstration of Cable Water Skiing
MONDAY WAS World Tourism Day and Torrevieja chose to celebrate this by focusing on nautical activities that are available in the city. by Keith Nicol STUDENTS STUDYING Tourist Information and Assistance (GIAT) at IES Mare Nostrum spent the day learning more about the training, theoretical aspects and practical methods of nautical activities, thanks to the collaboration of the Department of Tourism and the Marina Salinas. The Councillor of tourism, Fanny Serrano, together with the facilities manager, Jose Antonio Santa Cruz, addressed the students and expressed their belief that the city will be developing more training activities related to the various areas of tourism offered throughout the municipality and specifically cited the Natural Parks of Las Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja, which is in an advanced state of soon bring expected to collaborate with tourism students. Students received a lecture on the different sports that are offered at Marina Salinas by Sergio Martinez, director of “La Bocana” (Sky Cable); plus Fly Boarding and various activities run from Real Club Nautico of Torrevieja. They then
had the opportunity to enjoy an exhibition of the Flyboard. Furthermore, after receiving the appropriate instruction, students had the opportunity to try their hand at the Cable Water Ski, plus Paddle Surf and Kayaking. Fanny Serrano told the media that “to commemorate this day we put the emphasis on one of the main areas of promoting tourism in Torrevieja that is, precisely, sailing and water sports and the essential collaboration of Marina Salinas tourism who have brought students from IES Mare Nostrum as part of their module on tourism studies to experience first hand one of the nautical offers we have and to learn how to adequately sell and promote it.” The other tourist hub to which reference was made was towards the Councillor’s environmental promotion which Serrano added: “is something we have been talking about for some time. No one can wonder about the government team’s commitment as it is essential to protection, development and
enhancement of the environment.” In addition, Serrano said, that in her opinion; “what cannot be forgotten is that Torrevieja has a unique natural park in European terms but this has not been given the proper promotion and is the great unknown for Torrevieja. The Department of Tourism and Environment will launch a series of guided tours, coordinated from the tourism department so that people can get to know the great environmental potential we have.” Another issue that was referred to was the project to start guided visits around the salt works. Serrano predicted that; “it is possible that before the end of the year these can be started because it is an issue we have unlocked. When I became Councillor for Tourism the planning with the salt industry about these visits were paralysed. The talks have resumed and we are now looking at the technical issues.” The Councillor added: “we have the environmental permits and just lack the adaptation of a Visitor Centre.”

2016 Solidarity Calendar FOR THE last decade, local historian and writer Andy Ormiston has been producing a Calendar to help with the fundraising activities of local charities and NGOs. by Keith Nicol
THE 2016 calendar follows the same format as in recent years with it being a 16-page bound A-3 size, full coloured, quality edition, with over 70 photos and this year’s theme is “Passion.. for Torrevieja”. Several local photographers have kindly donated their photos for this calendar enriching the whole project, including myself. This is the 10th calendar produced by Andy Ormiston with a print run of 2,000 calendars that are distributed among several NGO’s and associations. Once again the calendar is supplied for free to solidarity organizations that then sell it for their own funds, so there’s no middlemen involved. Calendar’s sell for a suggested price of 5€. Once again the printing and design has been paid for by generous local businesses - Aroca Sequier Abogados, Alamo Costa Blanca Real Estate, Brithol MAPFRE Seguros, Currency Direct, and Atlas Insurance Brokers. Andy said: “The joy of living in Spain is that, partly because of the weather, there is so much to do. The calendar in each month is dedicated to a Passion.. tradition, culture or sports, or outdoor life etc. One of the most popular celebrations that attract thousands of people aare those of Semana Santa, or Holy Week. Thanks to Javier Torregrosa for his photos of the costumes that distinguishes each of the fourteen cofradias and each is illustrated by their names and hopefully this information will enable visitors to enjoy the processions better. The cover by Nicolas Garcia demonstrates this in picture as we have the Hombre del Mar on the promenade and its extension along the harbour wall, with a lovely sunset and a bit of wildlife - as you see the cat stalking the pigeon. I’ve supplied both the January and December photos that
are related to Christmas and a New Year. Thanks to Fernando Guardiola and Objectivo Torrevieja for their photos used in the calendar, and to Carlos Garcia for all the hours spent in laying-out and designing the calendar.” Andy Ormiston is responsible for the text and it’s an unmissable calendar for those living here that wish to know about all the red days and the local fiestas. Distribution of the calendar is through many NGOs whose volunteers do such wonderful work. Representatives of various groups were present at the press presentation and they underline the vast assortment of voluntary assistance in the Vega Baja that covers the poor and homeless, the sick in and out of hospital, those with deadly illnesses, the old and young, orphans, people in distress, broken families, ex-servicemen, animals and our environment; then we have our entertainers who bring a smile as their performances raise money for so many charities. During the presentation Andy, on behalf of the monthly Internet magazine “Torrevieja Outlook”, presented an award to Ars Creatio for their work over the past year producing an immense amount of cultural events for Torrevieja. Another award was given to the entertaining group RASCALS for their decades of work that raises so much funding for various local charities. The event took place in the lovely grounds of the offices of ArocaSequier Abogados in Rocajuna who also laid on a tapas and refreshments. Finally MiguelAngel Aroca made a presentation of a cheque on the day to Andy to pass on to a local charity, which he has continued to do so in appreciation for their work done throughout the year. Some of the local associations and charites present
who will be selling the calendars this year include: Reunite, AECC, Red Cross, Ruta de Sal, Rascals, Reach Out, Coastrider, Costa Blanca People, AECC pink ladies, Regalos de amor, Los Costaleros, The Royal British Legion, Help for Heroes, Samaritans, Age Concern, Help, AFA Torrevieja and Charity4Charities.

Printer driver is unavailable HI AUNTY Virus, I have a Lenovo computer with 8.1 windows with a Canon MP240 printer, I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and now can’t use my printer, the message is saying driver is unavailable for the printer, surely I don’t have to buy a new printer just because I have upgraded to Windows 10. Regards, Ray
Aunty says: You are not alone. Sometimes the default drivers installed by W10 may not work, so you may have to install the drivers direct from the manufacturer’s website. I went to the Cannon MP240 driver website : http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mp_series/pixma_ mp240#DriversAndSoftware But there is a message saying: “Canon will not issue drivers for this model to support the Windows 10 operating system, the Windows 7 or Windows 8 drivers should function in the Windows 10 environment with some limitations which are currently unknown to Canon.”. So it looks like if you cannot get your printer to work using the W7 or W8 drivers, then you will need another printer.
Contact groups
HI AUNTY, I have just switched to Windows 10 but can find no way to send an e mail to a Contact Group. Its something I have to do regularly and entering everybody’s address separately is very tedious. I use gmail by the way. Regards Paul.
Aunty says: You can create a group in Gmail - this is always the same if you use Gmail in a browser in W7, W8 or W10.. Click Gmail at the top-left corner of your Gmail page, then choose Contacts, select contacts that you want to add to a group, click the Groups button. , then Create new, enter the name of the group then click OK. Then you need to add contacts to a contact group: Select the contacts in the Contacts list, click the Groups button, select the group you’d like to add the contact to, or select Create new to create a new group, if you have multiple addresses saved for a contact, you can choose which address should belong to the contact group by opening the contact and clicking the small arrow next to the group
Response: Sadly that doesn´t work in windows 10. All your contacts are in an app. called ´People´ and there is no Contact Group option . I have used the procedure you describe for years in XP but can find no way to do it in 10 .I have been searching the Internet for 3 weeks to find the answer, but no luck, and a lot of people seem to be asking the same question. Reply: It does appear as if there is an issue in W10s Email and People “app” that has omitted the “groups” option, as many people are questioning where it has gone. However I am opening Gmail in W10s internet browser, and not in the “app”, just like you would have done in XP (as XP did not have the app!) There is a red Gmail at the top left, where I click on it and can create a contacts list. That contacts list has all the Gmail contacts in it, where you can create a mailing group. Response: Hello , I have tried again, and this time it works, Thanks for your help

Reflexive verbs: more uses These reflexive verbs are taking a bit of time, but it’s worth it in the long run.
We are still only laying the foundations in as much as we are looking at how they work in the present simple tense and we are looking at examples that are fairly easy to understand as they describe physical actions. We have talked about waking up, getting up and showering so I suppose, before we go any further, we should look at getting dressed, otherwise we’ll be feeling chilly. Following the same process of reasoning as before – we first need the verb “to dress” which is “vestir”. We don’t always dress ourselves, we might want to dress a child, a doll, an invalid etc. in which case we would use this verb in its non-reflexive form. “La niña viste su muñeca” - “The girl dresses her doll.” “Vestir”, as you will have noticed from that example is a root changing verb. It is an “E to I” verb, so this is how it conjugates in the present tense: VISTO, VISTES, VISTE, VESTIMOS, VESTÍS, VISTEN Most of us, most of the time, dress ourselves, and so to express this in Spanish we need the reflexive form “vestirse” (to dress oneself, i.e. to get dressed). Therefore “I get dressed in the morning” is: “me visto por la mañana” (I dress myself in the morning) and the whole conjugation goes: ME VISTO SE VISTE OS VESTÍS
TE VISTES NOS VESTIMOS SE VISTEN
We could go on repeating similar examples, but we have looked at four now and hopefully the penny is beginning to drop! So now to move the subject on one stage further, what we have to realize is that reflexive verbs are often used to express ideas that are less easy to visualize. Let’s take the most common one of all as an illustration. You will have heard examples of this many times – it is the verb “irse” which means “to go away”. I like to think of it as meaning: “to take oneself away”. Although we never really say this in English, it helps me to capture the meaning and work out when to use it. This is how it goes in Spanish: ME VOY, TE VAS, SE VA, NOS VAMOS, OS VAIS, SE VAN. I can say: “Voy a la playa los domingos” (I go to the beach on Sundays), and I can say “Adiós, me voy” “Goodbye, I’m off, or I’m going away”, using the reflexive form. However, it is also possible to say: “Me voy a la playa” which would mean “I’m off to the beach”. In this case the reflexive pronoun doesn’t alter the essential meaning at all, rather it makes the whole sentence more emphatic and more focused on the action of going. Keep smiling!

Cervical Screening Test Explained
What is it looking for? Some women will still know it is as a smear test. It is a screening test to detect abnormal cells in the cervix which is at the entrance of the uterus from the vagina. The test is looking at how healthy the cells are in the cervix it is not a test for cancer. Most women’s tests come back normal but some women approx 1 in 20 will have abnormal changes. The changes found do not necessarily lead to cancer of the cervix. In some cases the cells may go back to normal and in some cases the abnormal cells need to be removed in case they develop into cancer. Who is more likely to develop Cervical cancer? It tends to affect women between ages of 30-45 who are sexually active, it is rare for women under 25 to be affected.
How often do I need to be screened? In Spain where they are more proactive with cervical screening, women are invited to attend yearly. Regular screening allows any abnormal changes to be detected early so treatment can stop cancer developing. The Cervical Screening Test Cervical screening test is best when you are
not on your period so before or after. Ideally mid - cycle which is 14 days from the start of your period. A speculum is inserted into the vagina so the cervix can be seen. A brush or spatula will then take a sample of cells from the surface of the cervix. The procedure some women feel a slight discomfort and a little embarrassing, majority of women do not experience pain. The test only takes a few minutes. The sample is sent to a laboratory where it will be analysed for abnormal cells. Results normally take a few weeks. Interpreting results Normal : This means no abnormal cells were seen Inadequate: Means not enough cells were obtained so could not be seen or an infection is present so cells not able to be obtained. Usually have to repeat in 3 months Abnormal: Borderline or low grade is called ‘dyskaryosis’. Moderate or severe grade is called ‘high grade dyskaryosis’
With a low grade result there are slight changes which may rectify themselves. The sample will be checked for Human Pappilloma Virus, (HPV). If no HPV found then you will be on normal recall. If HPV is found then you will be asked to attend for colposcopy where
a special microscope examines the cervix more closely. High grade result sample will be checked for HPV and if it is present a colposcopy is advised. This does not mean there is cancer just abnormal cells that need treating so they do not develop into cancer. How do I prevent myself getting HPV virus? Condom use during sex, unfortunately condoms do not protect the entire genital area, HPV can be transmitted by skin to skin contact. Vaccinations are now available for 12-13 year old girls within schools. This vaccination will also protect against genital warts which is another strain of HPV virus. There are over a 100 strains of HPV virus. It is important that women attend for their cervical screening test . Cervical cancer if caught early can be treated. If nervous or anxious talk to your local health professional.

Varibels Hearing Glasses
One in three people over the age of 60 suffers from hearing loss.
However, only half of those people use hearing aids and even the ones who do are often less socially engaged. This is in part related to the appearance of hearing aids, but most importantly related to the fact that traditional hearing aids amplify sounds coming from all directions and are incapable of distinguishing background noise from speech. Varibel’s hearing glasses have finally solved this problem by incorporating four tiny microphones inside each of the glasses’ arms. The Sound signals from the microphones are passed through a processor that determines what sounds should be amplified to the ear. This allows the glasses to dampen background noise while selectively strengthening sound coming from in front of the user. Varibel hearing glasses feature: Digital multi-channel technology 4 microphones in both the left and right arm 4 different listening programs A telecoil to connect to (Bluetooth) loop systems Rechargeable capability through a patented charger Choice of frames in multiple colours Invisible “Receiver-in-Canal” option Proven and reliable arm design

CD Torrevieja looking towards the future by Keith Nicol HAVING BEATEN bottom of the table CD Muro to more to 17th in the table, CD Torrevieja continued their poor form away from home at Novelda, where they have lost on their last six visits. Last Sunday was no exception and although the team played possibly the best they have all season, promotion contenders Novelda came out winners 3:1. Torrevieja now have two home games in a row, starting this Sunday, although despite requests in the past for the team to kick off their home games at noon, in the warmth and sunshine of the day, Management have decided to play their games at 5pm and as a result go head to head with TV coverage of Arsenal playing Manchester United, Athletic Bilbao taking on Valencia and an 8.30 kick off between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. But, hopes are high to get some new and old supporters through the door and the club’s PR guy Chris Darwen said: We look forward again, with two massive home games back to back over the next two Sunday’s - matches I am calling “Los Clásicos de Sal” (let’s see if that catches on!). On Sunday we entertain Crevillente Deportivo who currently sit in 8th having lost 1-0 to Rayo Ibense at the weekend. Being another local derby we aim to get back to winning ways in front of a
Torrevieja’s 2015/16 squad
bumper crowd at the Vicente Garcia. It is a 5pm kick off on Sunday, so please come and get behind the team.” Chris is hard at work promoting the club in the virtual world with his “Torrevieja Talk” show, which you can find on YouTube or you can start downloading them from iTunes and listen to them on the move. The shows are presented by two of our Pena’s - The Merseyside Socios of Torrevieja (Paul Squires) and The FMC - CD Torrevieja Pena (Paul Wandless). Don’t forget that the club shop is open every week at Home Games and at the following times: Tuesday: 10am to 11:30am and Thursday: 4pm to 6pm. Chris continued: “Don’t forget if you want to keep up to date with what is happening at the club during the week it is a great idea to follow our Facebook page. Fellow director Juan Antonio Mejas runs this in Spanish and it has loads of useful information. We also have Twitter accounts in Spanish and in English. Again, for information during the week they
are useful things to follow, especially on match day if you cannot be at the game. Of course, do not forget our website - www.clubdeportivotorrevieja.com. Finally, please tell all your Torrevieja friends about our newsletter. I am sure there are people that are missing out on the information we are trying to send out to everyone, so help them to stay connected. The more people that are talking about the club positively will help us be stronger in the stands and on the field. To be added to the bulletin list just drop an email to: chris@clubdeportivotorrevieja.com.” The CD Torrevieja squad for the 2015/16 season has been announced. They are: Back row: Óscar, Quintero, César, Jorge, Martin, Matej, Ricardo Cavas, Rives, Eddy and Miguel Serna. Middle row: Jeff, Miguel, Fran, Rubén, Pedreño, Vicente Boix, Álvarez, Guerrero, Metralla and Pablo. Front row: Luis Carlos, Brani, Sánchez, Carrasco, Tote, Lewis, Juanfran, Adrián Banderas, Vicente and Juanma.

Peugeot 5008 MPV
TRANSPORTING SEVEN people in comfort can present a problem, unless of course you don’t mind Transit vans.
New price range: 22,223€ - 30,892€ Power: 163bhp 0-60mph: 10.2secs Top speed: 118mph Economy: 40mpg Watch the video at www.testdrives.biz
PEUGEOT HAS a solution though in its 5008 MPV (multi-purpose vehicle). Unlike the earlier Peugeot 807 people carrier the 5008 is more compact, making it more enjoyable to drive but this does mean that if there are seven passengers there’s not a huge amount of room for luggage. Importantly for the driver it’s not too difficult to reverse or manoeuvre. This style of vehicle is quite van-like in terms of appearance but it is very much like a car to drive and
driver appeal is one of the advantages of the Peugeot. The test model, a two-litre diesel Allure – top-of-the-range - is equipped with a six-speed automatic gearbox but it can also be driven like a manual. At low speeds, typically up hill, this gearbox is a little indecisive, not sure whether to go for third gear or second, which does make for the occasional uncomfortable jolt. It is quite frugal for a vehicle of its size, returning over 40mpg on average. I put it through its paces over a long weekend to Pembrokeshire where we experienced a variety of roads. On the motorway (the M4, over the Severn Bridge) it was very capable, happily cruising at 70mph, even though it was heavily laden with five passengers and luggage. Cruise control makes life so much easier on such travels and the electric child lock engaged by the click of a switch on the driver’s door is easy to operate. The one-way streets, invariably up sharp inclines
in this part of the world, certainly cause the tired motorist some confusion but thank goodness I’m driving the 5008 because the auto box makes light work of the hills. I’m not usually a fan of electronic handbrakes but the one fitted to this vehicle is quick and simple to engage and disengage. Inside, the Allure benefits from an enormous panoramic glass roof (with electric sliding cover), which makes the vehicle really light and airy as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. The front passengers get captain style seats with pull down armrests that can be adjusted to the desired height. The driver’s seat is certainly comfortable, hardwearing and supportive although I do find that when my daughter’s baby seat is in place behind I cannot push my seat back quite as far as I might desire. There are all the gadgets the modern day motorist could dream of including sat nav, a useful head-up display showing the speed and ensuring the driver doesn’t take their eyes off the road. Air conditioning and a good quality sound system are all part of the package.
