RTN HITS the streets this week with a sensational new look designed to bring even more news and features to keep readers up to date with life on the Costas.

Expanded to 88 colourful pages, the four paper format has been changed to simpler ‘North’ and ‘South’ editions to help people

keep fingers on the pulse of what’s going on in their own communities and further afield.

RTN is the region’s favourite English free newspaper and – national holidays permitting – is available every Friday from distribution points along the coast with even more copies being printed.

The North edition covers the Marina Alta, Marina Baixa, Benidorm and La Safor, while RTN South focuses on the southern Costa Blanca and Costa Calida. Naturally, each edition includes the big stories along the coast, Spain and sometimes even further afield that affect readers’ lives.

The aim of increasing pages from 72 to 88 is to create more space for editorial content – news takes pride of place in the first section of the paper, features follow, and RTN’s sports coverage undergoes a revamp and returns to the back pages; the traditional home in papers around the globe.

Television news and listings are always popular and are situated in the centre of RTN to put the day’s entertainment at everyone’s fingertips, as well as gossip and events from the world of showbiz.

And the professional production team at RTN towers have been hard at work designing an

eye-catching look for the paper – making editorial, photographs and adverts stand out to readers.

There are a series of new features: Linda Swain brings a specialised ‘pets page’ with stories about animals and pet care; writer and broadcaster Chris Ashley takes an off the wall look at life in general; ‘Ask Sara’ is the paper’s agony aunt, life coach Sara Bell has a background in family and matrimonial mediation and is ready to offer advice; and a recipe page brings a different dish to try every week.

REPUTATION RTN Managing Director Daniel Wilkinson who recently took over from his father, Geoff Gartland, said the changes were being made for readers and to underline the paper’s reputation as being the leading tabloid in the area.

“These are the first big changes to come into play since I took over the helm back in March. We are a big tabloid newspaper in the region and look to serve a loyal readership,” he said.

“We have also returned to the two edition format to allow us to produce a bigger and better paper carrying all the news and keep readers informed.

“The feedback we were getting from having four editions was that they were too localised. People want to know about events in their own towns but also the news that is important to them – it was felt we had become too local.”

Another important change coming is the re-launch of RTN’s popular and interactive website. Scheduled for next week, Danny said it was “another great positive” for the paper and again to benefit the public, whether resident or visiting the area.

“The new RTN is jam-packed with news and features, which is actually how it should be and we are very proud of that and want to shout it out very loudly,” he added.

The paper has also appointed a dedicated distribution manager for the first time. Damien Forman will look after all the existing distribution points for RTN and create new ones to make sure it is widely available.

by KEITH NICOL TORREVIEJA’S AWARD winning University Hospital is apparently understaffed.

So say CEMSATSE, the workers union at Torrevieja’s University Hospital who reiterated their complaints about the conduct of the Human Resources management in the nursing and public sector in relation to the hospital’s workers. Employees say that the current template is neither adequate nor enables quality care, and accused management of “being out of touch with the workload of everyday life of a professional.” The union points out that the second floor was opened during the summer with the normal result of an increase of patients that could not be closed at the moment.

Thus they have had to keep the team that was contracted only for the summer “instead of covering absences that serves the facilities,” plus staff explained that in any case, they do not have enough staff in the first place.

CEMSATSE indicates that the size of the workforce is made up with respect to the number of health cards attached to the Department of Health, “without taking into account seasonal peaks or the floating population, because the actual population is much higher than the company maintains.” This ensures that even after a onslaught of people, especially in

summer to ER, at this time of year now comes another type of people with serious diseases that must be addressed.

With respect to the services offered, they indicate that when the UCI was full of patients, those who come are referred to the postanesthesia recovery unit (Urpa), “which is an infringement of their rights because there can not have visitors, and also it then leads to work overload for staff, since they are patients who require special care.” Therefore they are requesting “that the staff of ICU today is insufficient to meet the demands of all the patients when they are full and in fact this service has been absorbed into the team hired for this summer.” Moreover, the union noted the status of the lack of social workers being “insufficient for the number and complexity of cases to be resolved.”

With the lack of staffing, their fear is that what is occurring in the Hospital of Torrevieja is “a gradual dismantling, with the move of even more powers to the Hospital of the Vinalopó,” as is the case of cardiac surgery. CEMSATSE has requested that the entire second floor remains open for patients entering surgery, for internal medicine and those in the service of mother and child. They are also demanding improvements to the Emergency Room at the Hospital.

Jihadi recruitment suspects arrested

by JEANETTE RICE SPANISH AND Moroccan police have arrested ten people on suspicion of recruiting for the Islamic State group IS. According to the Interior Minister, Jorge Fernandez Diaz, the ten formed “part of a very important recruitment platform for Jihadi fighters including indoctrination, radicalization and transport of individuals to jihadi combat zones.”

Amongst the ten suspects four were arrested in Spain, two men and two women following raids in Barcelona, Toledo and Valencia with the other six being arrested in Morocco.

In a statement issued by the Ministry a spokesperson said “the women arrested in Spain were both Moroc-

cans, while one of the men was a Spanish national of Moroccan ancestry and the other a Portuguese citizen converted to Islam. All are suspected of recruiting people to fight in Syria and Iraq. The arrests in Morocco took place in the western coastal city of Casablanca and the operation highlighted Spain’s cooperation with Morocco, with both countries sharing

intelligence and “synchronising operations.”

Snr Diaz said “there is evidence that the group specialised in recruiting young women to send to areas controlled by the IS and we continue to remain on high alert for possible terror attacks.”

During the raids a considerable amount of information was gathered along with computers siezed at the properties.

DENIS HEALEY DIES AT THE AGE OF 98

THE RENOWNED Labour politician, Denis Healey passed away at the weekend at the grand age of 98 years old.

Family members said that he died peacefully at his Sussex home on Saturday following a short illness.

Lord Healey was Labour’s defence secretary from 1964 to 1970 and chancellor of the exchequer from 1974 to 1979 before becoming deputy party leader in opposition in 1980.

Tributes poured in from all political parties with the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn saying he was “a Labour giant”.

Prime Minister David Cameron wrote on Facebook: “We’ve lost a huge figure of post-war politics. A hero in World War Two as Beach Master at Anzio and a brave politician, Denis Healey told his party hard truths about Britain having to live within her means.”

ATM law changed A NEW law was put in place on Friday 2nd October to stop customers using ATM machines being charged twice.

As reported in the RTN a few weeks ago customers of banks were being charged twice to perform one transaction. A fee from their bank for not using one of their own ATM’s and then a fee from the bank where they were using the services.

Consumer uproar forced the government to pass a new law at the weekly cabinet meeting which says the bank owning the cash machine will make a charge, then the customers bank decides if to pass that charge on but cannot make an additional charge.

The new law, however, does not have to be applied in full by the banks until January 1st and the bank consumer association, Facua, said that it would not prevent lenders charging fees because the law did not including a maximum figure on the ATM commissions.

In July the Bank of Spain said that banking clients could not be charged twice but a law was deemed necessary to ensure fairness prevailed.

Sex offender caught by selfie

A SEX offender who posted a picture of himself on his facebook account was linked to several sex offences and tracked down by police in Malaga.

Having identified the man as a suspect for the many local sex attacks police used social media to their advantage.

The man had taken pictures of himself in the lift of his apartment block and posted them, showing in the background the serial number for that particular lift. This enable the police to trace his address.

The man stalked women in underground car parks before sexually assaulting them and stealing their credit cards.

Pedro Garijo, Malaga’s National Police Commissioner, said “today is a world that is reliant on mobile phones and we can use this to work alongside traditional forms of policing.”

When officers searched the man apartment they found credit cards and other personal items that had been stolen from the victims.

Teenagers get their voice heard

by KEITH NICOL TORREVIEJA’S DEPUTY Mayor and Councillor for Youth and Sports, Pablo Samper along with staff from the Centre for Information and Youth Animation (CIAJ) from the Youth Council, finishes its visits of local schools this week.

It was the first time Samper has had official meetings with Directors of the local Institutes. This week he visited IES Mare Nostrum, IES Las Lagunas, IES Mediterranean, Colegio La Purisima, and finishes today, Thursday 8th October with IES Torrevigía.

The new CIAJ Autumn schedule was also released this week, which gave Samper and the team from the CIAJ, the opportunity to promote the different activities available, which include courses, training activities and opportunities for leisure. Anyone between the ages of 14 and 35 can also pick up a Youth Card, the Carnet Joven and other youth cards such as an International Student card or Hostelling cards. These cards will be offered during the visits as well as special offers from the Jove Generalitat through the CIAJ office in Torrevieja. They also announced some other developments, such as new information service via Whatsapp from the Youth Council, aimed at young students of the city.

The focus of the tour is to hear directly from students what they’d like for the department of youth to do for them, from activities, to events to just making their life easier. Pablo Samper’s visits also comply with the aim of gathering information in order to improve and develop the services that young people are offered from the CIAJ. To visits also include surveys that have been developed by the Department of Youth. The Councillor for Youth, Pablo Samper noted that these visits will also meet the objective of “seeing first hand the concerns, doubts and requests of the city’s youth, including students of Institutes, the Baccalaureate and those in Vocational Training. Samper added: “During the meetings we also took the opportunity to tell students about the various activities overseen by the Sports Department, so they know about all the activities that are available to them.”

The visits will took place during the two recess/break times held by the Institutes and thus classes were not disrupted.

This was the first contact between the Councillor for Youth and the directors of Torrevieja’s schools as Samper and the Department of Youth look at new initiatives for future collaborations that can be beneficial for young Torrevejenses.

TomTom boss refuses sales to taxi drivers

by JEANETTE RICE THE BOSS of TomTom, Tom Thomas, has refused to allow the sale of the devices to professional taxi drivers.

Using language that cannot be published Mr Thomas inferred that the drivers learn the street names as it was their job.

The decision was taken by the head of the company after he took a taxi ride from Madrid airport that cost 46 euros with the driver using one of his companies devices.

This meant that the driver was completely reliant on the directions that the TomTom gave and Mr Thomas has argued “I created this device and now I have to pay you to use it, who is stupid!”

The taxi drivers union has, however, criticised the decision saying “we have to use GPS because some customers do not know how to get to where they need to be.”

Since the announcement from TomTom on Tuesday morning, any browser installed in a taxi now takes the driver to a local tourist office, where, Mr Thomas says they can purchase a city guide to learn the street names like they used to do.”

EUROZONE CONCERNS OVER SPAIN FIGURES FOR September in the Eurozone have led to speculation that Spain’s economic health may not be as good as had been hoped.

The PMI (purchasing managers’ index) which shows business activity and order levels for Spain fell from 59.6 to 55.1 in September.

Andrew Harker, senior economist at Markit said “the rest of the year will be crucial in determining whether the Spanish economy continues to improve or eases back towards stagnation.”

TWO ARRESTED IN LA ALBERCA

PATRON SAINT, Ángel Custodio: the Guardian Angel was celebrated on Friday by members of Torrevieja’s Policia Local, as their patron Saint.

The event took place in front of the HQ of the Policia Local, opposite the Carrefour shopping centre and was attended by sixty agents plus an extensive representation of members of the Guardia Civil, the army and local politicians as well as family and friends.

As happens every year, the Mayor or Chief of Police awards service medals and letters of commendation. This year, since Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon wished to be in control of the Policia Local, he was in charge of the honours. During the ceremony, medals were presented to those agents with 20, 25 and 30 years of service in Torrevieja, along with letters of recognition to three officers for their humanitarian service in saving the life of a child. Agents who make up the maritime patrol team, who are called into action on a regular basis, also received a letter of recommendation, plus messages of support

Three new inspectors also received a certificate of recognition for their work and finally the mayor, José Manuel Dolón received a medal from an Orihuela Inspector in recognition of the fact that he is the Councillor for police.

LOCAL POLICE in Murcia arrested two men on Tuesday in La Alberca for stealing objects out of cars.

The thieves were caught when they tried to evade a police patrol. When agents checked inside the car where they found several bags of clothes, radio cassettes, correspondence and personal documents of several residents of the Santo Angel and La Alberca.

The detainees, two men of 31 and 49, and residents of nearby villages, carried weapons in the trunk of the car to use against vehicle owners should they be caught in the act.

They were taken to the Police Station in El Carmen and the vehicle they used was towed away.

Late night swim kills two Two British women died at the weekend after entering the sea for a late night swim on the Costa Brava.

The two women were with a group of five other female friends from the Birmingham area and were partying on the beach when one of the women decided to go for a late night swim at the Lloret de Mar’s Platje Gran beach.

A night watchman attempted to warn the swimmers not to go in the water as a storm was causing large waves and dangerous currents, but the warning was ignored.

Eye witnesses said that one woman stripped off some of her clothes and went into the water and was followed by a friend. Both ladies soon got into difficulties with one managing to make it back to shore.

Another of the women dashed into the sea to try and save her friend and this was the last time either of the two were seen alive as the wave crashed up to 13 feet high.

The Spanish Marine Civil Guard searched to sea and the bodies were spotted the following day about three miles down the coast.

The two women have been named as Lisa Coggins, a mother of two children who worked at Costco and Tracey Aston, married, both from Birmingham.

Mrs Aston’s husband Aaron said he was “devastated” by the news, whilst Ms Coggins’s boyfriend Mario Sas-

sano, 36, told reporters Lisa was with her sisters and her friend when the tragedy struck, he said “she had two children, this is just unbelievable, Lisa was a hard working girl, just such a beautiful person.”

A Foreign Office spokesperson said “we can confirm the death of two British nationals and we are providing support to the families and friends who were travelling with them.”

Doctors allow girl to have a “dignified death”

FOLLOWING A campaign by the parents of a 12 year old girl, doctors have agreed to switch off the life support machine which has sparked a nationwide debate about euthanasia.

The parents, Estela Ordonez and Antonio Lago have argued for some time that their daughter was in pain but their original request that the machine be switch off was denied by the doctors.

Andrea, the 12 year old from Galicia in the north western part of Spain is a patient within the paediatrics department at the Hospital Clínico in Santiago de Compostela and doctors had insisted that the machine not be turned off despite the recommendations of the regional governments bioethics committee.

As doctors continued not to co-operate the parents were forced to turn to the courts in Santiago where four experts were asked to report on Andreas condition and as to if she was suffering.

However, before the reports were filed the hospital doctors met with Andrea’s parents and it was confirmed via the family solicitor, Sergio Campos that Andrea had been taken off the life support machine following meetings on Monday morning.

In a statement Sergio Campos said

“Andrea will now have a dignified death, as her parents had requested, the doctors are currently giving Andrea the minimum level of hydration so that her medications can take effect.”

The parents have asked for privacy as the case has sparked a wider debate on euthanasia in Spain.

The head of Spain’s PSOE, Pedro Sanchez has been reported as saying he will regulate euthanasia if they win the December election and joined the right to dignified death association which is calling for a public debate on the issue.

The regional governments of Andalusia,

the Canary Islands, Aragon, Navarre, the Balearic Islands and Galicia all have their own dignified death laws, and the Basque Country is in the process of drafting its own version.

Doctors have said that it could be two, four, eight or 38 days until Andrea passes away as the wider debate continues.

The Spanish Health Minister, speaking on TVE the national Spanish television channel, said that “opening this debate will be uncomfortable for everyone but I praise the courage of the parents for their determination in wanting to stop their daughter from suffering.”

NEWS BITES ABANDONED HOTEL FIRE THE SELOMAR Hotel in Benidorm was the scene of ambulances and fire engines at the weekend as fire broke out.

The hotel, which has been closed to the public since 2007, had a fire which affected six floors of the building but also caused the evacuation of 75 nearby residents with six people requiring medical assistance for smoke inhalation.

The hotel, located in the Virgen del Suffrage Avenue in front of the Levante beach, had squatters and three who were on the third floor had to be rescued. Following the medical teams checking that they were not suffering from smoke related injuries they were transferred to police station to make statements.

Dark smoke filled the air as traffic had to be stopped for several hours whilst a security perimeter was established.

As soon as the fire was extinguished local safety crews and police personnel moved in to begin their examination.

The Selomar Hotel was under a warrant of execution which had been issued on September 1st by the department of planning for the Benidorm town hall. The warrant demanded that the owners secure the building and make the necessary works to ensure that the façade was not a danger to people passing by.

The investigation into the fire is ongoing.

British bobbies catch criminal in Spain

by JEANETTE RICE THE TWO British bobbies who have been patrolling the Spanish party resorts this summer not only got a sun tan but also caught a convicted killer.

PC Martina Anderson and Sgt Brett Williams have been praised for capturing the man, Ashley James who went AWOL from a UK prison five years ago.

Ashley James absconded from Sudbury Prison in December 2010, while serving a 10-year sentence for the manslaughter of Uriel Johnson in Bilston.

He was arrested after being found and returned to serve the remainder of his manslaughter sentence, and was released on licence in September 2014.

He then set up home in Blackpool, but

fled to Spain in breach of his licence conditions, which banned him from leaving the country.

PRINCESS CRISTINA TO BE TRIED FOR FRAUD SPAIN’S Princess Cristina will stand trial on tax fraud charges, the first royal family member to stand trial since the monarchy was restored in 1975.

Cristina, who is the 50 year old sister of King Felipe VI has been charged following a four year investigation into her husband, Inaki Urdangarin who is charged with money laundering and fraud.

The court date has been set for January 2016 at the Balearic Islands court in Palma de Mallorca where the couple will stand trial along with sixteen others charged in the case.

The princess could face up to four years in prison if she is convicted and her husband faces a possible sentence of up to 19 years for trying to embezzle six million euros in public contracts through a non profit foundation that he and a business partner set up.

Promises, Promises or not AGUSTINA ESTEVE, Partido Popular councillor has offered her insight into the first one hundred days of the rule, or misrule of Torrevieja’s Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon. Agustina said: “I’m surprised by the attitude of a Mayor, who in just over one hundred days of government or misrule, depending how you look at it, seems to have forgotten his electoral promises.

I have to remind Snr. Mayor that in his election manifesto he stated that he would offer: “... another form of government, opening the council to the objective participation of citizens, banishing the abuse of power ...”. Well, none of his promises were met at the last Council meeting on September 24 with his treatment of representatives from such local bodies as the Andalusian Cultural Association, the Association of Residents Torreta III and representatives of the FAPA Gabriel Miró; to all the tried to approach him but

were met with the utmost contempt.

You forget who is the representative of all citizens of Torrevieja, even those who have not voted and those who try to ask questions in Parliament, even though you do not like the view that they express. You forget that we must ensure the participation of all citizens of Torrevieja, to promote and facilitate their work and listen to their proposals and for their ideas to reach the Administration, not hampering the mechanisms and channels that correspond to them, as you are doing so.

I was also surprised that the Councillor for Citizen Participation, Victor Ferrández has not acted, so far, in defence of Torrevieja citizens who just wanted answers to some questions on topics already discussed in plenary and for what are completely legitimate procedures.

How I wish, Snr. Ferrandez, would stand up for the rights of these groups. It also appears that he no longer cares about the Torrevejense people and has forgotten already what he proclaimed in their election program on citizen participation. It is even more lamentable, if possible, to forget that it is also up to you to listen, care for and support our partnerships, with groups and citizens.

Snr. Mayor, none of this was reflected in the Council chamber.

Citizens who tried to intervene were totally unable to address your concerns. How I wished that the councillors of the Citizens Party, whose vote has put you in power Snr. Mayor, had know what was to follow and chose on the grotesque spectacle that you have offered with your attitude.

We must never forget that the institutional

structure of a city is one of its greatest values and that you cannot, nor should you ignore or belittle Torrevieja citizens, but always listen. We are privileged to have a supportive, participatory and to be very involved in our city’s associations, with their ideas, tastes and traditions and the way in which they enrich us, but all this is thrown to the ground when you want to work with them regarding your policies. The political colour of each of the associations should never influence the treatment they receive that should be given by the institutions. We must treat everyone equal and with the same criteria. The participatory process is dialogue and that dialogue is from where we have to attend to the promotion of relations between citizens and institutions.

I am outraged to read in local Spanish media that “... Surrealism, vulgarity and anger have reached the council chambers of Torrevieja and are apparently to stay.” To proceed further: “Cries of improprieties, insults and an irreverent vocabulary was used towards many citizens who yesterday went to claim the solution to their problems.”

If you have the courage to share your opinion on what happened in the council meeting, to describe to citizens the reason for your attitude, who acted correctly in using the council chamber as their right to ask questions and tried to intervene, how do you rate a mayor who in the City Council Chamber replied to his own citizens with phrases like “you do not add anything here ...”, “... do not tell me your life story” or “you just come, to ask, ask and ask,” with the common response to Torrevieja citizens being: “you: shut up”?

More than 2,400 people sign to Save Our Park ON 31ST JULY, more than one hundred concerned residents attended a meeting at Casa Ventura Restaurant to discuss the stoppage of works on the La Siesta / El Chaparral park.

During the meeting, former Partido Popular councillors presented the documentation that the pentapartito Councillor who stopped the project, said did not exist. Upon hearing that the Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon was the only one who could release funds for work on the park to continue, it was decided that a Petition was needed to be presented to the Town Hall.

Over the past two months, a small group of local residents plus businesses centres, pubs, restaurants and cafes in the area that covers, El Chaparral, La Siesta, San Luis and San Luis Lakeside have been busy collecting signatures to present to the Mayor. However, going back on his promise to invite anyone to visit him at the Town Hall, the Mayor introduced a protocol that anyone who wishes to see him must now enter their details at the PROP office and he’ll decide who will see and who he will not. Thus, the only other course of action open to the local residents association was to officially submit the signatures they had collected into the PROP office.

On Friday at around noon, members from the association presented a total of 2,408 signatures with the PROP office. Of these, 64 where without an NIE, DNI or Passport number. From those signatures gathers, almost 70% were Spanish residents. The issue of the Park will now be added to this month’s Agenda for the next Council Meeting, to be held at 5pm on Thursday 29th October 2015 in the Town Hall. Any members of the public that would like to, is invited to attend.

The organisers wish to say thank you to all the members of the Support

Group who gathered the signatures plus all the local bars and restaurants, business centres and to everyone who signed the petition. They noted that as soon as they hear what the outcome is, they will be notifing the local press immediately.

The petition asks the Mayor of Torrevieja, Jose Manuel Dolon to disclose when work will start again on the project, or if the municipal government are going to abandon the site, create a different project, or just leave it to decay.

Valencia’s five new courts

THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE has announced the creation of five new courts in Valencia of which two will be located in the Vega Baja, specifically in Torrevieja. They have also created an administrative unit of permanent contact with the senior judges of Valencia to “meet the needs of the administration of justice and seek appropriate solutions. In this regard, they will ask the Valencian Institute of Safety and Health at Work (INVASSAT ) to develop a plan of prevention of occupational risks for court facilities and staff.

This was agreed during a meeting of the Joint Commission for Cooperation and Coordination that was held between representatives of the Department of Justice and the High Court of Valencia (TSJCV). This first Joint Committee of the Legislature addressed issues such as the study and assessment of the most urgent cases that the administration of justice in Valencia needs to look at, places where progress has been made on the recovery of some of the courts whose creation has been pending since 2011 and on the proposed restructuring of the offices of attention to victims of crime plus the situation regarding civil registries in Valencia.

FIGURES CONFIRM BRITS LOVE BENIDORM NOW THAT the summer season is over statisticians are continuing to analyse the visitor figures for the area for September.

As Benidorm’s hotel occupancy reached nearly 93% this was down marginally on 2013 and 2014, with six out of then tourists having travelled from overseas.

There was an increase in Portuguese holidaymakers with foreign tourists taking 59.2 percent of the total market, whilst the Spaniards held 40.8%. In the international market, the British market rose in importance in first place with 47.4% of the total. Followed far behind Belgium (4.3%), the Netherlands (2.6%), Scandinavia (1.4%), Poland-RomaniaBulgaria (1.1%) and less than 1 percent: Portugal Ireland, France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy, in that order.

For September booking figures showed that most preferred the two star hotels over the three and four stars, presumably as the household purse strings have been tightened.

The 25th edition of the Paella Contest

THE DEPARTMENT of Celebrations of the City of Torrevieja has announced the twenty-fifth Competition Paellas of the festivities of La Purisima, which will be held on December 6th in the grounds of the fishing port. Up to 120 individual contestants, clubs, gatherings of friends and entries can be submitted in the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre, Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm hours from today until November 21st if you wish to participate. As in previous editions, the jury will be appointed by the council and a total of six prizes will be awarded. The paella contest has become one of the main events of the holidays in an area that brings together several thousand people for this fun event over the long December holiday.

Unique Sea Lion therapy at Rio Safari Park

ONE OF the most unforgettable experiences one could imagine, swimming with sea lions, has come to an end for this season.

The programme of assisted therapy through touching and holding the sea lions is another very special programme from Rio Safari Elche Foundation. Back in June they started offering therapeutic bathing with these animals, aimed at groups with different needs. Until 19th June, and coinciding with the end of the school calendar, their therapies targeted different groups of entities. The sessions were led by the occupational therapist from the park, accompanied by animal trainers.

From 22nd June they offered a custom programme for children affected by Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and Autism.

There were divided into six groups, formed by five or six participants, who un-

derwent two weeks of intensive therapy.

Swimming with the Sea Lions was also available to the general public and the Rio Safari Park also hope to offer this again in 2016. The activity lasts about 30 minutes.

During that time, the sea lions are swimming and diving around you while their trainer teaches you everything about these amazing animals. The trainer simulates a training and interaction session, in which your help and participation is essential.

This close encounter with these beautiful animals is a once in a lifetime experience!

The programme of assisted therapy with the Sea Lions through the Rio Safari Foundation celebrated its ninth season this year with a positive balance and attracting new new groups. A total of 330 people benefited this year from this unique treatment programme that is the only one in the world.

Youth events for the Autumn

by KEITH NICOL THE COUNCILLOR for Sports and Youth, Pablo Samper announced the new Autumn schedule of youth activities at the Centre for Information and Youth Animation (CIAJ) on Tuesday.

The Autumn/Fall schedule from the Youth Council, covers the months of October, November and December, with outstanding events related to the Halloween party and the special Youth courses designed to improve employability carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Employment.

He also reported the launch of a new information service via Whatsapp at the number 606 055 291.

Samper was accompanied by the technicians of CIAJ, Rosa Mª Lázaro Alfaro and Gustavo García Silva, who discussed the different training, leisure and recreation activities plus volunteering and employment opportunitites aimed at the young population of the municipality. The first main activity will be held in

Torrevieja on the night of Halloween, Saturday October 31st, called “Zombie Survival” a Real Game in the style of the “Walking Dead” set in an apocalyptic world full of zombies, with the goal being the survival of participants. Also included in the programming of the CIAJ, after receiving many requests to do so, is a trip to Port Aventura, on the 7th and 8th November.

In terms of training, they have included the implementation of a programme aimed at young people aged between 16 and 29 who neither study nor are in work and who wish to improve their employability through training courses, practice and jobs experience in which youth can participate as a partner of the SIJ Project + Youth Guarantee the Ministry of Employment and Social Security.

One of the most popular of all the events offered at the CIAJ is the continuing of the English Language conversation classes to help students improve their oral English with native English speaking volunteers. There are also several workshops

including “Funny Science” aimed at young people and the ESO course “Become A Youtuber” and a typing course. All workshops are conducted in collaboration with schools in the city and offer significant discounts to Jove Card holders, that Samper noted are also available in the CIAJ, through IVAJ office.

In addition, the Generalitat Valenciana, in close collaboration with the Municipality of Torrevieja, has organised a course of online business management and two workshops on selfemployment for young entrepreneurs. The Volunteer sector will be organising two talks. “Volunteering in civil protection” and a briefing on the European Voluntary Service. Pablo Samper also highlighted a Gymkhana for young people in terms of festivities and a trip to the snow in Sierra Nevada in January 2016. NEWS BITES CHINESE MAN ASSAULTS EX WIFE IN MURCIA MURCIA LOCAL Police arrested a 40year-old Chinese national man currently residing in Valencia, for assaulting his ex-wife, also Chinese, in the street.

The incident took place at about 4.35pm on Tuesday when the emergency number 092 attended several calls reporting that a man was assaulting a woman in a street in the neighborhood of Vista Alegre, ac-

cording to police sources.

Group staff in the District and the Police Protective Equipment and Family Services (EPAF) rushed to the scene, where they could see that a woman had been shaken and beaten on the face and neck.

The testimonies of the witnesses agreed with the version of the woman, so the alleged perpetrator was arrested. He was then transferred to police headquarters in San Andrés District for legal proceedings.

One fifth of properties sold to the British

SPAIN’S LAND registry, the Colegio de Registradores, has reported that 19.8 percent of all foreign property sales in the first six months of the year were to the British.

Despite a dip in the past few years these figures show that the British still have faith in the Spanish property market with the total overseas sales accounting for 12.7 percent of the overall figures.

Officially 750,000 British people live in Spain, although these figures are bound to be higher, with the most popular destinations being the Balearic Island and the Canary Islands followed by Murcia, Andalusia and Catalunia.

When the financial crisis hit Spain the property prices fell drastically and this combined with the relaxed lifestyle has seen sales increase to the British.

The low house prices in Spain combined with the sky high UK housing costs seem to be attracting more to move to Spain with the average house price in London being £513,000 that money would buy a substantial villa here in Spain.

LAST WEEK Torrevieja’s Tourism department became a centre of study for students from the University of Alicante who are in the final years of their Tourism Degree.

The students visited Torrevieja last week to discover how the department of tourism works in the real world as opposed to in the classroom. The Councillor for Tourism, Fanny Serrano, received the fourth year students and their teacher Josep A. Ivars Baidal who were visiting different tourist spots in Torrevieja as part of their university education.

The group visited the reception centre of the Natural Park and visited the RCNT, where they met with Real Club Nautico Manager Carlos Torrado, who gave them a briefing on the nautical experience that they offer. Serrano noted that the students maintained a very positive attitude throughout the day. She said: “They have been highly motivated and participatory, have been very interested in what the city has to offer, with sports tourism and the environment, especially the Natural Park, and how things are done in the tourism department in the city.”

Their curriculum includes a subject called “Integrated Management of Tourist Destinations”, which includes a visit to a tourist destination in order to meet its management model and local government. Furthermore, the course also covers the business point of view. The students met with Fanny Serrano, Head of the local tourism department, Lidia Rodriguez and Manuel Jimenez, vice president of the Association of Tourist Accommodation of Torrevieja.

The meeting and talks took place at Hotel Cabo Cervera facility, where they also met with Jose Andreu, President of the Association of Tourist Accommodation of Torrevieja.

BENISSA POLICE HONOUR THEIR PATRON

THE LOCAL Police force of Benissa celebrated the fiesta of the Guardian Angels, the patron for the security force at the weekend by attending a special Mass at the Purissima Xiqueta church in the town.

Grandmother treks 500 miles across Spain

AN 82 year old grandmother trekked nearly 500 miles (800 km) across Spain finishing at the end of September.

Elena Mansell embarked on the trek, just for fun, with her granddaughter Carla Gallagher aged 36, taking just under a month to complete the walk.

Elena said “it was the experience of a lifetime to have completed the Camino de Santiago”.

The two ladies travelled through hundreds of towns and villages on their walk and had the chance to meet some amazing people.

Elena said: “Carla lives and works in Spain as a teacher and because I’m a keen walker she just asked me if I fancied doing it. At first I was only going to do 100km but then I thought I probably won’t get many chances to do this sort of thing so I said let’s do the whole thing. Lots of people take loads with them but we de-

cided to just take a few clothes and the bare essentials.

We didn’t plan or book anything, we just started walking and worked out where to stop along the way.”

A member of Garstang Ramblers in the UK Elena and Carla began their walk from Pamplona and headed north east until they reached Santiago.

Elena said “it was funny as people came to know me as the grandma of the camino and walked along part of the trek with us. There were loads of big burly men dropping like flies because of injuries but I didn’t understand what they were complaining about. I had a couple of blisters throughout the whole walk even though it was very different to walking in Lancashire as the roads are so gravelly. We walked from around 6am until 2pm, mainly because of the heat and then just sunbathed and explored after that. The adventure was amazing but it’s something I won’t be doing again and I’m really glad to be home.”

More Moors and Christians

by JEANETTE RICE THIS WEEKEND it is the turn of El Campello to celebrate the Moors and Christians with parades starting on Sunday 11th October.

Some events are held a few days prior to the weekend with the Medieval Market opening on the Thursday evening.

The fiesta, which is held in honour of the patron saint Mare de Déu dels Desemparats and takes place at the same time every year, recreates the history of the Moorish occupation of the area between 700 and 1400 AD. Thursday evening is the Correfocs at midnight followed by a children’s parade on Friday morning. On Sunday the fiesta lights are switched on and on Monday 12th at 7am is the sighting of the Moorish fleet at sea and lighting of alarm fires at the Illeta watchtower. The church bells ring out to warn the population and the Christian Riders of the invasion, followed by the Moors landing and the war beginning. Battles between the two sides continue during the week and on Wednesday 14th both sides present their bands to battle through music. On Thursday 15th, the final day of the fiestas, at 2pm the daytime fireworks are lit and then the event concludes in the evening with a solemn procession followed by a grand firework display. The Friends of Athletic to honour the Virgin of Begoña AMIGOS DEL ATHLÉTIC: The Friends of Athletic “The Salinero” will hold a day of celebrations this Sunday October 11th the festivities in honour of Our Lady of Begoña, patron saint of Bilbao and Athletic Club of Bilbao.

The festivities include the traditional parade, this year with Edurne and his accordion from their headquarters to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, where a Mass will be held.

After a fellowship meal, the day will end with raffle and a small meal.

For fans of Athletic Bilbao, activities start on Sunday, October 11th at 10am with a reception by the clubs and supporters at their headquarters, located at Avenida Diego Ramirez, 13, Torrevieja. At 11:30am the Parade with Edurne and his accordion leaves from their headquarters to the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Plaza de Oriente), for the Mass.

Everyone attending is requested to bring along a non-perishable food item as a contribution to those without means. There’s more fun at 2:30pm with the lunch plus a raffle.

More than 500 runners took part in Sunday’s Xtream race

II Xtream Running Torrevieja fun run IF YOU happened to pass by Torrevieja’s Sports City on Sunday morning, you would have been surprised to see a set up more akin to a child’s birthday party rather than an athletic event.

The II Xtream Running event was won by Tomás Sánchez Lopez as the absolute winner of the just over four kilometres race, who proved to be a complete athlete and one with a great sense of humour.

More than 500 people, most of them dressed in original and fun costumes filled the car parks and the spectating areas of the Sports

City and surrounding area, lining the entire route, that was filled with colour and humorous tests that every year attracts more and more participants.

The fun run consisted of a colourful, playful, four kilometre race full of obstacles designed for runners to have fun with friends and family.

There were mazes, water and foam obstacles, military style obstacles all there to hinder the ‘athletes’ but for them all to have fun and enjoy the race.

The prizes were awarded to the top three in each category. The winners were: Senior Men category and

overall winner of the race, Tomas Sanchez Lopez (17 ‘47 “). In female Senior, Virginia Garcia Navarrete (22 ‘51 “). Veteran Male A, David Rico Gil (19 ‘03 “). In Veteran Male B, Pascual del Castillo Martínez (19 ‘09’). Female veteran, Raquel Diaz Beyoda Guida (22 “32 ‘). Male, Saul Villena Master (17 “55 ‘) and Women, Patricia Jimenez Sirvent (21” 29’).

Prizes for the most original costumes were also awarded with first place going to the “Smurfs” Group Award. The awards ceremony was attended by the Councillor for Sports of Torrevieja, Pablo Samper.

Chris’s Corner ONE WET Wednesday in Worthing (there is no Hell, there is only a wet Wednesday in Worthing) I struck up a conversation in the stalls of The Dome Cinema our Flea Pit of choice - the added benefit an in-house Nit Nurse.

The chin-wag was with a Teddy Boy named Victor John Terry & before you ask I couldn’t find any connection with the famous Chelsea Captain, Leader, Legend, Spent Force. However he did become infamous a couple of years later. He was with his girlfriend, a local lass called Valerie Salter who could, apparently, start a fist fight in a Nunnery.

Anyway I’m chatting with Vic & Val and they asked me if I wanted some Purple Hearts which I thought a bit odd offering me American Military Honours, after all I’d not done much Derring-do in Dullsville West Sussex. No Audie Murphy heroics here. He won 3 medals making him a true warrior, unlike a certain lionised Macho Movie Star, who ducked & dived the draft while winning numerous silver screen battles from The Pacific to The Prairies – although he did come a cropper at The Alamo. When it was explained that these Purple Hearts were illegal amphetamines, I put a whole lot of gone! between me and the Bonnie & Clyde tribute act. Here’s the What If Moment! What if I’d accepted their offer and started hanging out with them? Because shortly after our Cinema chit chat Terry & Salter with 2 criminal associates robbed a local Lloyds Bank and shot dead an employee in the process. Terry was found guilty of the murder and was hanged at Wandsworth Prison May 25th 1961- the 2 cohorts got lengthy sentences but here’s the kicker, Valerie Salter who was at the bank, knew there was a gun involved, handled the £1,372 haul, harboured Terry and for that she got a ONE! year probationary term. I got that for liberating the occasional old type soda syphon from Roberts Off License back yard - taking them around to the front and redeeming the 5 Bob (25p Children) deposit. So I’m on a par with Val the Moll, guardian angel to a psychotic murdering nut bucket. Just call me The Mafia Crime Lord Of West Side Worthing. Ciao for now Valerie Salter – let’s see – where did I put that horse’s head.

Health Week at Hospital Quirón Torrevieja

Health Week at Hospital Quirón Torrevieja attracted hundreds of visitors

HOSPITAL QUIRÓN TORREVIEJA, the former St. Jamie Hospital, is celebrating its 15th anniversary and in doing so has been holding a Health Week.

The imitative finishes today at noon so you still have a few hours to possibly nip along and have a brief look at the photography exhibition and chat with some of the specialists on hand.

Monday’s opening was made by the President of the Photography Club of the College of Physicians of Alicante, Dr. Marco Payá, President of the College of Physicians of Alicante, Pastor Dr. Jose Rosado, the Deputy Mayor of Torrevieja, Pablo Samper, the Levante Regional Director, Dr. Rafael

Gimenez and the mayor of Torrevieja, Jose Manuel Dolon. This week’s organised activities included lectures, workshops and health tests. The program began with the opening of a Collective Exhibition of Photography, organised by the Photography Club of the College of Physicians of Alicante-Photomed.

There was a roundtable panel discussion on healthy habits with local journalists and bloggers and free testing for the early detection of diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and those who are overweight.

This initiative stems from the interest of Hospital Quirón Torrevieja for promoting and preserving health, promoting healthy attitudes and presenting guidelines to produce information and prevention to a wider

population. In addition, other events such as lectures on the importance of cooking and menus to improve health, by the Alicante chef Joaquin Baeza, Chef of the Year 2014, and Carolina Pérez, a specialist on developing nutrition with the Hospital Quirón Torrevieja Obesity unit and on back care, by Marta Leyda, a specialist at the physiotherapy centre. Dr. Rafael Gimenez, the Quirónsalud Hospital Group Director, stressed that “this initiative is a result of the hospital’s interest to promote new forms of life extension among citizens and is part of the work we do throughout the year with the aim of awareness of the importance of prevention.”

The group Quirónsalud is the largest hospital group in Spain and the third largest in Europe.

It is present in 13 regions, and has more than 6,200 beds in more than 70 centres throughout Spain. In its efforts to provide comprehensive care and excellence in patient care, Quirónsalud centres have a modern infrastructure and the necessary high-tech equipment plus teams of highly specialised professionals of international prestige. Its welfare service is organised into units and transversal networks to optimize the experience accumulated in the various centres and research results. Currently, Quirónsalud is developing more than 1,600 research projects in Spain and many of the centres lead in areas of medical development, being pioneers in different specialties such as cardiology, endocrinology, gynaecology, neurology or oncology, among others.

Think of charity

WHY WHEN people are having a clear out do they insist on leaving their discarded items next to the bins!

I know they leave them just in case somebody else wants them, but PLEASE remember the Charity shops!

This week alone I have seen a wardrobe dumped by the bins, bags of good looking clothes that passersby have rifled through and left them strewn all over the pavement! Two old pool chairs that only needed new cushions (there are a few ladies in the Second chance charity shop nifty with a needle and thread). I have personally collected quite a few items and taken them to the shop, cleaners clean out apartments and then just dump buckets and spades and other beach toys!

PLEASE if you are having a clear out please think of Second Chance Charity Shop situated in the corner of the Plaza Centro commercial, Albir. We are always looking for bric-a-brac and household items and smaller bits of furniture, heavier things can be collected by calling Margo on 642 154 426.

Miracles Do Happen

I WOULDN’T have believed any one had they told me Laser treatment could help, but I took the chance and went to see Dr Hans Christian Madsen DC on June 30th 2015 due to having two slipped discs and a trapped nerve, being in unbearable pain and having difficulty in walking. Medication wasn’t helping, only making me feel ill. I was very dubious about the treatment but a friend of mine had had it and she was up and dancing, which is where I wanted to be. It is now September and though I am not yet dancing, I am walking about totally pain free, having nearly finished my treatment. I would like to say a big thank you to Dr Madsen, the very helpful receptionist Pauline and lovely nurse Andrea.

Gas Bill update I thought I would let you know the current situation on the GAS BILLS .

You printed my letter warning people of holiday and residential tariffs.

I contacted an interpreter (Paula) who I was told had dealt with the gas company previously . She talked to the company and told them I was on the wrong tariff.

I have now had two bills ---waited for two to check it wasn’t a mistake!

These bills are for 32€ and 22.80€. Comparing them to two previous bills of 349€ and 224.77€, I am delighted.

But holidaymakers be aware, these bills are for 60 days, and we only have gas for hot water, and a four ring cooker hob.

Next I am going to try to recover the overpaid money, wish me luck !

Asociación Animalistas Torrevieja-Guardamar

by Keith Nicol TORREVIEJA’S MUNICIPAL kennel is undergoing a few small changes thanks to the intervention of Councillor Carmen Morate and the drive for Torrevieja to offer better service to abandoned animals and for the treatment of domestic pets throughout the city.

What was the Perrera Municipal de Torrevieja is no longer, according to their Facebook page, a Kennel, but now a hostal, for cats and dogs, plus the occasional pig or other small animal. Since the Kennels held their first Open Day in early August, the zone has seen more action in the area than possibly since the zone was first opened. Back on 10th August, the day served to attract new volunteers and to show the sorry state of the Zoological facilities, to educate visitors on animal care and for the recruitment of volunteers in order to improve the service of these municipal facilities.

This was the purpose of the open day held at the Zoological facility of Torrevieja and a few days after the Councillor for Animal Welfare Carmen Morate, denounced the poor state of the municipal premises and demanded the help of volunteers to improve conditions for the life of cats, dogs and other animals housed in the kennel the overwhelming answer seems to have been positive since more than 30 people have volunteered to help out at the centre, walking dogs, feeding and cleaning and helping to find new forever homes for the animals in their care.

And Torrevieja is not alone in wanting better conditions for lost or abandoned animals. Recently, local council-

lors met with ‘FedAnimals’, a new federation of pro-animal welfare. The three councillors in the Alicante province with responsibility for animal protection, specifically, Marisol Moreno, Mayor of Alicante; Ana Andreu, Almoradi and Carmen Morate, Torrevieja met with Xesco Iniesta, coordinator FedAnimals. The meeting was their first as they look towards new ways and initiatives for later meetings, to initiate joint projects that “not only involve the municipality, but beyond.

Our aim is also to involve the council in the integration of animals in cities,” Iniesta said after the meeting.

The longer term plan for Torrevieja is to budget for major improvements, or perhaps a new facility in 2016. Although the change of name may be just a first small step, Torrevieja is now collaborating with Guadamar Council and some of their abandoned pets. A new website is being developed and while the old Municipal Facebook page has been closed down and now all the pets for adoption can be found at: https://www. facebook.com/AnimalistasTorreviejaGuardamar.

Ciudadanos Councillors Paqui Parra Aparicio and Pilar Gómez Magan have asked the Town Council to find an urgent solution for the collection and identification of stray dogs in Torrevieja. The Municipal Group ‘Ciudadanos’ of Torrevieja also presented a proposal for the City Council to address the shortcomings of the zoological centre.

The Municipal Kennels opened in 2011 and have helped to significantly cut down the number of stay dogs wondering the streets, offered many wonderful pets of adoption and reunited lost dogs with their owners. Through the

use of social network Facebook, new owners are being discovered every week and are taking up more and more unwanted pets for adoption.

The Municipal Kennels, or Hostal, is located close to the Habaneras Shopping Centre and Policia Local in the Toretta area of the city. You can visit in person and see all of the dogs and cats any weekday between 10am and 2pm.

In order to adopt a dog, you just need to bring a copy of your DNI, NIE, Passport or/and Padron with you. Every dog has had a full health check, have had all their inoculations and are micro chipped.

The Supreme Court confirms that money lost buying a property in Spain off plan should be recovered OUR FIRM has helped many families, especially expats, recover money paid in the purchase of real estate assets ‘off plan’ that were never built.

ALTHOUGH MOST of the Spanish courts have interpreted Law 57/68 (focused on protection of consumers-buyers, and effectively the base for these kind of legal claims) in an appropriate manner and in line with its spirit and nature, there have been some regrettable exceptions, although a minority.

Our law office has defended our clients’ interests from those banks which did not check as required by law 57/68, whether promoters had contracted the insurance or guarantees required by law to guarantee money paid by consumers when they opened special accounts to receive such amounts.

We also understand that those banks and insurance companies who did grant a general insurance policy or bank guarantee line, are themselves liable and must pay the money back plus interest, even if they did not give individualised certificates or guarantees to the buyer.

In connection with this second theory, we wish to emphasize today a recent judgment from the Supreme Court (Civil Division) of Spain, Court Order number 322/2015, dated 23/09/2015, concerning an appeal presented by Banco Popular, Sociedad de Garantía Recíproca de la Comunidad Valenciana (SGRCV) and BBVA on a ruling from Audiencia Provincial de Alicante, relative to the development Herrada del Tollo SL. The Spanish high court says, as we ourselves have defended for a long time, that if there is a general bank guarantee or insurance line or policy to cover the amounts paid in advance in a development, as required by Law 57/68, the fact that an individu- al certificate is not delivered to the consumer does not affect the bank or insurer’s liability, as the delivery of this individual certificate really depends on the developer, bank or insurer, not the consumer.

So the Supreme Court concludes that: i) On the agreement on a general insurance or guarantee and on the perception of the premiums, the insurer or guarantor is liable to cover the guaranteed issue, which was the obligation to refund the amounts received, together with interest as provided by Law, in relation with the development or construction to which the guarantee referred to; ii) the issuance of the individual certificates or guarantees, by the insurer or guarantor, for each of the buyers, legitimizes the buyers to cash the guarantees (directly) on an execution court case, as per the art. 3 Law 57/1968; and iii) the lack of individual certificates does not preclude that the obligation to repay the amounts handed over, with interest,... in favor of those buyers who have entered into a purchase agreement and pay money, due to the existence of the general guarantee or policy.

This is can only be opened in Branches in UK and not via the phone or the internet but it is an instant access variable account with no catches The Post Office offers a similar online account with 1.61% but again after 1 year this reverts to only 0.65%. Please be aware that to open any account in the UK in most circumstances you will need a UK address. If you are willing to tie up your money for 5 years you can get 3% from several institutions at the moment Annuities - The rates are around 3% at the moment- the older you are the better rate you get. Not the best time to purchase in my opinion as rates are low but as a Spanish fiscal resident these have fantastic tax benefits so you should not overlook them entirely.

Spanish Compliant Bonds – Rates vary and depend on the size of investment. Prudential offer a Cautious Fund that is paying around 4.5% after charges. This type of investment is great for people wanting medium to long term income or growth. 5% of capital is allowed to be withdrawn each year penalty free. These offer very good tax benefits but are only available if you are a Spanish Fiscal resident.

Structured Notes – These are very sophisticated investments but can offer income rates of between 5% and 10%. There are normally 2 areas of risk with these, counterparty and the conditional risk. There are lots of issuers of these notes and it is best to

discuss with a Financial Adviser before entering to make sure all the conditions are fully understood.

The higher the rate offered then usually the more risk is involved There are other investment vehicles such as share portfolios, unit-linked or unit trust funds but then we are going up the risk ladder and usually a Financial Adviser will be involved. Remember everything is

ok in moderation and putting all your eggs in one basket can lead to trouble.

As we move closer and closer to a totally dominated cybernetics planet, there is no time like now to teach your children to be self-sustaining, selfsufficient, continuous learners and entrepreneurs.

I have always been a firm believer that women, especially mothers - make the best entrepreneurs.

The home is an entrepreneurial enterprising hot zone demanding all of the skills that business tycoons must learn. For example, busy mothers have to know how to balance a household budget, juggle staff in order to keep the ship afloat (husband and kids on this account), be an arbitrator, open and close deals, pitch ideas, ask for funding… I think you can see the parallels. However, if parents had the foresight to teach their children some of these valuable skills during their childhood, they would be on their way to personal and financial freedom and not sleeping on the sofa until they are thirty-five!

I was raised on a farm and from age five, I had all of my entrepreneurial skills sharpened with the aid of my own veggie stand. During harvest season, my father – a monster gardener who has always grown way more veggies than we could ever eat – would let me solicit these tasty fresh treats from the end of our laneway next to the not so busy yet well traveler roadside. Without realizing it, I was learning about money, marketing, negotiations and closing sales like a shark.

Sadly, the Industrial Revolution turned the majority of folks into hourly slaves and the basic roots of the good old family business were lost, while newly

fashioned unemployment lines were gained!

Here are some valuable traits that my entrepreneurial veggie stand enterprise taught me…

The Value of Self-Confidence and Bravery You can never have too much self-confidence and by letting me make my own money and interact with my customers at my stand, I became very brave without even knowing it. I learned to talk to total strangers and ask them for money. Think about how important that skill is and how valuable it would be if your children knew how to be brave. Of course, my parents were not far away if there were any weirdoes – but face it – weirdoes rarely buy veggies on country roads.

The Value of Making Money Asking for money and earning money builds a relationship with money and this is something that children can never be too young to learn. I learned that money could buy cool things like a bike.

The Value of Losing Money We tend to hear about entrepreneurs who are winners but it takes many losses to learn how to be a real winner. Teaching your children how to be entrepreneurs will help them to learn about failure and yet not to fear it. In fact, they will learn to adjust, make better calculations and recover and best of all – try again!

The Value of Problem Solving The great thing about growing up on a farm is that

everyone is a problem solver. My grandpa would say that the “tractor won’t fix itself!” In other words, you figure out your own solutions! Both my parents and grandparents were always helping me to see my problems from many viewpoints so that a great solution could be devised.

I remember being upset because a rain shower was going to ruin my veggie sales day. Instead of just giving me the solution, I was asked to think for myself as to what could possibly keep the rain off. In the end I found a tarpaulin in the garage and some rope and tied it to the trees.

The Value of a Good Challenge Being an entrepreneur means that there is a never a dull day and a good challenge to keep the business a float is half the fun! This kind of attitude can be fostered at a young age and parents need to challenge their kids to take risks and to speak up about their creative ideas. The days of children being “seen and not heard” is over!! We played a lot of games on the farm – card games and we shot billiards too and being pushed and prodded by all the family to win or at least play a good game really helped me to love a challenge.

Conclusion If you would like to learn more about how you can help your children become entrepreneurs – then take the VEGGIE STAND CHALLENGE and get out on the roadside with them. It might be the best thing you can do to open your children up to a world of possibilities.

ADAPT aware

THE MONTHLY meetings of ADAPT Association are always interesting and informative but this Saturday was particularly so.

by PATRICIA THOMPSON THEY WERE given life saving lessons by a qualified nurse from the Angels Association.

A lecture and demonstration was given of the correct method of giving CPR, (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) better known as the Kiss of Life and members were then invited to practice the procedure for themselves.

They were then given the opportunity to have a Blood pressure test, a Sugar level test and a Cholesterol test. A large number of members took part in this and seemingly everyone was quite satisfied with their results.

The primary aim of ADAPT Association is to integrate with the Spanish community in and around the San Pedro area while enjoying the social aspect with

our various groups which include Luncheon Groups, Camera and Computer clubs, Spanish Conversation group, Metal Detecting and many others.

ADAPT meetings take place at 10:30am on the first Saturday of the month in the Pensionista building, next to Castelar College, Lo Pagan, where new members are welcomed. Visit our website at www.adaptsanpedro.com

At least a little rain has helped, but more would be better by

MOST OF us will have experienced a few centimetres of rain. But many will have experienced nothing like a traditional gota-fria of old, before the coastline was redesigned and nature was replaced by kilometres,with few breaks, of concrete or plastic green-houses stretching into the sea.

However all have had some rain to wash plants, dampen soil surfaces and consolidate layers of summer dust. At a similar time twenty years ago we had to delay our flight back to the UK as Valencia airport was entirely under water and even the next day north of Favara only the outer lane of the motorway was free of flood waters and in the orange groves either side of the motorway just the top 25 centimetres of orange trees stuck above the subsiding flood waters. It was an amazing sight.

In those days one knew that without watering most gardens would survive at least until a half term visit or even Christmas time. Autumn was truly a good and easy time to plant flowering and fruit trees.

Now one needs to take more care as Costa Spain moves a little nearer to a North Africa climate. For many this will require some adjustments to garden designs, plantings, watering and maintenance schedules. Such issues are discussed in depth in ‘How to use less water in your garden – A practical guide to waterwise gardening ’. The book is con-

veniently obtained from many on-line book stores including Amazon Books and The Book Depository.

But if it does become wetter during the next month don’t let’s forget spring dreams of having window sills as colourful as those in Cordoba during the May Patio Festival. On wet days window boxes can be cleaned out and washed ready for early spring, good composts can be mixed up and stored in dustbins and cuttings of this year’s most vigorous plants can be taken to produce young plants for next year’s displays. A little more rain and it will be safe to plant out plantlets and sow for autumn, Christmas and early spring vegetable harvests. Even crops in window boxes and builders buckets in semi shaded positions can be productive over long periods. By the way you may be one of our readers who lives in Spain for less than 182 days and still enjoys the challenges of leading and directing a significant UK or Multinational company.  COMIC CARTOON strip Peanuts aired on Saturday mornings on the CBS network from 1983 to 1986. Snoopy and the rest of the gang soon gained in popularity and now you can go to website peanutizeme.com, and should you so desire, turn yourself into a Peanuts character. Emma locks horns with the Raging Bull TOM HANKS and Steven Spielberg were interviewed by ET magazine last week, and although they were there to promote their new movie ´Bridge of Spies´ it turned into a much more interesting conversation. ROBERT DE Niro´s moviemaking goes all the way back to 1965 when he played a ´client at a diner´ in Three Rooms in Manhattan.

The story of Radio Times reporter Emma Brockes found its way into The Independent who stated the young lady said “De Niro became upset with my line of questioning and asked me to pause my recorder while he scrambled to leave,” yes indeedie! Robert got up and left the building, but not before saying “I take offense to the negative nature of your questions, I’m not doing this darling, I think you’re very condescending!” The reason this sorry tale reached the dizzy heights of The Independent then became clear when apparently our Emma responded to De Niro´s remark by saying “Don’t you think ‘darling’ is condescending?” Holy Toledo!!

Although ´darling´ is a commonly used term amongst stage and movie peeps she does have a point, but it all came out fine and dandy after the reporter said to the Huffington Post “It was a long day for everyone. I thought he was terrific in the film, and I quite admire his refusal to play the publicity game!” Good on ya Emma!

THERE´S NOTHING you can hide these days when it comes to facts and figures around social media and celebrity websites, and the latest one to hit the ground running is the danger of your poor computer being struck down with a bad virus. DISNEY HAVE already committed to reworking classic cartoon movies into live action productions that include Pinocchio and Beauty and the Beast, and now the word is that Mary Poppins is to have the same treatment. Sources say it will be set 20 years after the first film took place using storylines from P.L. Travers’ children’s books. Let’s hope they take a bit more care to avoid the Dick Van Dyke cockney accent debacle happening again.

JAMES TAYLOR was born in Boston in 1948 and had a No3 album when he was 20 years old. He´s sold over 100 million albums and won five Grammys, and his big breakthrough recording Sweet Baby James in 1970 went triple platinum, staying on the charts for two years. ´Before This World´ is his first studio album in 13 years and last week remarkably it toppled namesake Taylor Swift off the top of the charts in the process. KENNY ROGERS announced his retirement from live performance on his website saying “There’s a fine line between being selfish and being driven, and I think I crossed that line a lot when I was younger.”

He´s recorded over 65 albums and said he’s thinking about making a duets album. With one of his finest being ´Islands in the Stream´ with Dolly Parton ´ let’s hope he means it. He begins his final world tour in November in Canada, with hopefully a concert or three in Europe.

Am I a rebound?

I RECENTLY got back together with an ex-boyfriend.

We broke up because he said he’d met the love of his life. But then their relationship broke down because she met someone else and got married. Now he says he wants to marry me. This is all very sudden, and he wants us to elope and do it all very quickly. I love him, and always have, but I am worried that I am a rebound. He hurt me a lot when he left before.

It is concerning that this man left, telling you that he’d met the love of his life, and then returned to you when his new girl met someone else. It is all rather sudden, and I would take things very slowly if you feel like you are being rushed into marriage. It won’t hurt to wait a few months to gather your thoughts, and really be reassured that this man wants you, and not his former girlfriend. If he loves you, he will wait.

Heartbroken I HAVE been dating a Greek guy for nearly two years. He bought a house recently, and I thought the relationship was serious enough for him to at least give me a key, or even suggest we moved in together. Now he says his family are putting pressure on him to marry a girl from their home country. I don’t understand - his family have accepted me as his girlfriend for the past two years, although they never said a lot to me. Why is he listening to his parents? I can’t eat or sleep, I am just crying all the time, and he won’t return my calls or messages.

I am wondering if this man is perhaps using his parents as an excuse to break up, although many cultures expect their children to marry within their religion. Venus squares on Saturn right at the start of a busy week bringing a conflict on emotional levels. Surety is the basis of any affair of the heart, and yes there are questions that need to be answered because you need to know exactly where you stand and where you are going and most importantly, know who is going with you, and why?

Mercury’s sextile with Saturn illuminates a clear way forward, but remember that your timing has to be right. Whilst your channels of communication are well and truly open and Mercury is compliant with this, negative Saturnian issues certainly aren’t helping anyone right now. Back to the drawing board will be a drastic but necessary action to take.

Somebody needs your tender love and care right now, but they are afraid to tell you the real truth of their situation.

After much soul searching you have come up with a viable solution, but you can forget it if you really think that this will make a difference, it may very well bring things to a head, and when all is said and done is it what you deserve?

THE DEATH scene is sometimes a hard thing to get through. It greatly depends on how you view the continuation of the soul as loved ones suffer the death of their Earthly bodies and await the soul journey ahead of them.

Waiting for the last breath certainly isn’t very pretty and I myself would rather remember and savour the life of loved ones lived here on Earth than to dwell on morbid scenes of misery, with everyone collapsing in tears. We are Spirit living in a body and this body ages and dies, what survives to journey onwards is the soul intact in which is recorded all the lifelong information that makes the individual so special. Good and bad, all is recorded and stored in memory and in perpetuity as our lifelong journey ends and we pass over to the Other Side. At the time of passing it is usual to have loved ones around you, but the dying will very soon be embracing life, as the great cycle of reincarnation sends us along our final pathway towards the Spirit World.

Like many I was just too late to pay respect to my Mother, having flown transatlantic, and taken taxi, train and boat to be at her side. I made a decision when I got to the hospital that I would remember her living her life; and took no pleasure in denying the insistent nurses that I should ogle her lifeless body; even though she had been alive ten minutes earlier. They called it paying my respects. It was harder to just walk away and easier to have the memory of my Mother’s living smile than to inspect the dead body propped up on pillows, as was her reflection in the windowing glass that cold and snowy Christmas Day morning. I wasn’t a coward then, I was a realist, and was since able to have a conversation with a Mother who was proud of my actions that day. If it had been me lying there she would have done what I did and just walked on.

Nobody ever dies alone. That same angel that oversaw your birth is the principle angel to be at your side at the very point of death. The job in hand is to safely escort the deceased all the way to the Spirit World. This will answer one of the many questions I frequently get. People ask me why the dying appear to be looking up in the air, above them rather than at them. This is because the angel is despatched and arrives in a descent under sheer wing power; I have seen this happen many times. Revealed behind them is a glimpse of the new World to come and it is fascinating watching for those who are being called forward to the imminent celebration of the end of a lifetime. People who have survived Near Death Experiences have marvelled at the splendour of their glimpse, basking in the sunshine of golden days to come as much is revealed to them in the final hours of life here on Earth. The only difference is that they have been fortunate for it not to be their turn to travel, and they have shared their experiences with us that we may learn from them. We all have a concept of the Other Side so any little possible private peep can prepare us for this longest and unknown journey into a new reality....grabbing our attention whilst loved ones are facing the inevitability of a surety of passing.

As all living things die we are indeed a part of a process that spans thousands of years. Old souls that I meet on the way; like myself, have experienced some of the wonders of this World since it began. But one American client one day surprised me by being able to show me several of his lives. He had fought in the Civil War and I shall never forget the glimpse of his blood soaked shirt and forage cap and badge. This fascinating man however had had a life he was unsure of, and he took me back to this time when there was darkness, warmth and a constant beating all around him.

Though he couldn’t understand his role in this dark place I was able to. He was showing me his development in the womb of his mother, and the sudden silence of the foetal heartbeat meant that he didn’t make it.......not in that life!

The soul journeys on, and loved ones are often so very near us, only they will have the best view, every comfort and be free of their earthly body of pain and senility. Have faith that our loved ones may be on a different plane but they are looked after with every care. They deserve it, after all!

Open Day FINCA LA Castellana Animal Welfare Center San Miguel de Salinas are holding an Open/ Funday on Sunday 11th October. Everybody is welcome and there will be plenty of entertainment throughout the day. This event starts at12pm until 5pm.

They work with the Local Police and collect abandoned dogs in San Miguel & local areas.

They currently have 150 animals and this is funded by local events and boarding kennels.

They desperately need to raise 3000€ a month to keep the centre running so pop along and support the animals.

TSS Autumn Fair with Bagpipes TORREVIEJA STROKE Support Group held their annual Autumn Fair on Saturday 3rd October at the Age Concern annexe in La Siesta. The Group´s president, Lilybeth, is pleased to announce that the event raised over 800€. Many thanks to the volunteers who worked hard to make the day a success and special thanks to all those who attended.

The group provides invaluable advice and information to stroke victims and their carers in addition to physical and psychological therapy to aid rehabilitation. Keyboard troubles

HI AUNTY The problem I have is I cannot type in the “at” in my email address. It is on laptop bottom right of number 2 but does not work. So I am stuck with no email. Can you help please? Bob

Aunty says: For characters on the bottom right of keys you need to press the “alt gr” button (usually located to the right of the space bar) with that key.

If that does not bring you your “@” sign, then your keyboard setting in W8.1 are not set up to your keyboard layout and perhaps the “@” sign is allocated to a different key... on a “querty” UK setting keyboard it can be allocated to the “apostrophe” key.

So you will need to go into the control panel and change the keyboard layout options.

Or if you are really struggling, copy and paste the “@” sign from somewhere else, like from someone else’s email address, or the character map.

HOLA AUNTY Virus, I recently received an email from a friend who stated he had been mugged whilst on holiday. His passport etc. had been stolen and could I lend him some money to settle his hotel bill. Suspecting a scam I rang him at home and he confirmed that his contact list had been hacked. My concern is as I opened the Email, but not replied, could the hackers obtain my contact list.

If so what do you advise. John Aunty says: Yes it is a scam. Opening the email should not cause any problems for you, and should not allow access to your contacts list. But it may cause problems if you opened any attachments that were included in the email.

In which case update and run your antivirus software, and probably Antimalwarebytes, just to make sure.

Manhattan, New York This relatively small island of New York, just under 23 square miles, is one of the most densely populated areas in the world.

It´s hard to really imagine how many people can fit into this tiny area, between those who live there, around 1.6 Million, and those who commute daily, increasing the numbers to upwards of 3.5 million.

Some statistics have it at more than 170,000 persons per square mile. Hard to imagine when we look out over the

Orihuela Costa – although there are some days on the beach in August that yes, I am sure we could compete with that statistic!

Since the agreement between Iberia, American Airlines and British Airways, flights to and around the US have become very affordable, and a relatively short flying time from Madrid

makes this a good ‘getaway’ destination for a long weekend or a start/end point for a longer US holiday.

With only a few days to spare, we opted for the getaway holiday, flying out from Alicante on a Thursday morning and arriving in NYC early afternoon the same day. Customs in the States is something we all just have to grit our teeth and get through, thankfully to pile into a yellow cab once through arrivals, and on to our hotel, in this case, the Manhattan Club Suites, located a few streets north of Times Square, very convenient for walking to all major areas.

And just as well that we are keen walkers, as it is without doubt one of the easiest ways to manoevre around the Times Square area – with traffic almost permanently on go-slow or stop, this could have been one of the most frustrating places if you are sitting in an open top bus anytime after 11am! So, although our body clocks were telling us it was way past bedtime, instead we had dinner and headed to the world famous Empire State Building. Most popular in the hours of sundown, after dark the views are utterly spectacular, with New York lit up in all it´s neon glory, looking over the Hudson to New Jersey (surprisingly close), the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty, just some of the world famous landmarks on this iconic skyline. At 10.30pm (spanish time 04.30), we called time and headed for our hotel.

The next day, determined to pack in as much as is humanly possible, we negociated special rates for the hop-on hop-off bus (there are many companies operating this service, choose and bargain to get your best deal!). Fortified with a NYC Diner breakfast (a minefield of options ‘over easy’), we joined our guide Dave, for a guided tour of downtown Manhattan, via Broadway, the Empire State Building, Greenwich Village, Littly Italy & Chinatown, and of course, Ground Zero.

Despite the enormous amount of construction going on at this site, the memorial water features, built in honour of those who died on September 11, are curiously tranquil, the

visitors respectfully hushed as they pay tribute to the names etched on the sides of the walls that mark the place where this terrible event took place.

From Ground Zero, it is a short walk to the pier from where the Hudson River Cruise departs, another negociated inclusion in the hop-on bus ticket. The cruise takes around 1.5 hours, over to Brooklyn, downtown Manhattan and, of course, the most famous of all ladies, the Statue of Liberty. The cruise ship passes a few times in front of the Statue allowing for ample views of this huge structure.

To actually disembark there is not included, and so we headed back to our original departure point, happy to get back to some shade!

From here, a 15 minute walk returned us into Chinatown, an absolute must-see and must eat. Dim Sum will never be the same here, sadly! For that alone, I could return to New York! Little Italy was in full celebration mode, the streets literally unpassable and very uncomfortable – we did not hang around for long here. A short (shopping!) walk along one of the main streets and then it was time to catch our bus back to our hotel in time for a welcome pause before heading to see the stageshow Chicago, in Broadway.

The show was fantastic – a sell out even though it has been running for such a long time. We had purchased our tickets in advance, however if you have no special requirement, you can always check with the discounted ticket booth at Times Square, the best place to get great bargains for on-the-day tickets.

The rest of our time in New York absolutely flew by. Enjoying a very late summer, our weather was spectacular, lending itself particularly well to a long walk in Central Park, with a few Cocktails to help us rehydrate along the way... all too soon it was time to get back to our hotel for a late check out and a taxi to take us back to JFK and our return flights. In fact, by Tuesday, sitting in my office, it was hard to believe we had been there at all!

Spaghetti with Camembert, Serrano Ham and Pesto THIS IS a truly International dish with French camembert, Spanish jamon serrano and Italian pesto.

THE RESULT is a wonderful, fresh tasting pasta. You could use a ready-made pesto if you want, but if you can find fresh basil, it’s well worth the effort of making your own.

Enough dried spaghetti for two people 75g camembert cheese, cut into 1cm cubes 4 thin slices of serrano ham, cut into 1cm strips 25g parmesan shavings For the pesto a handful of fresh basil leaves 1 clove of garlic, peeled 25g parmesan cheese, finely grated A small handful of pine nuts 3-4 tbls olive oil

METHOD 1. Make the pesto by placing all the ingredients in a blender and mixing to a runny paste.

Add a little more oil if necessary.

2. Cook the spaghetti in plenty of boiling salted water until just cooked. Drain and return to the pan with a little olive oil. Add the pesto, camembert and serrano, stir and cover with a lid then leave to stand for a minute or so until the cheese begins to melt.

3. Serve immediately with a the parmesan shavings sprinkled over the top.

Serves: 2 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 7-8 minutes

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Reflexive verbs in everyday expressions Today we are going to look at some reflexive verbs which are used very commonly in everyday expressions.

They take the whole concept of reflexives a stage further than what we have learnt so for, as it is difficult in most cases to make sense of them using words like “myself, yourself”.

The best approach therefore is to accept that this is now certain things are said and learn them for future reference.

The first one is “acordarse” which means “to remember”. An extremely common use of this verb is to say: “no me acuerdo” which means “I don’t remember”. If we wish to mention what it is we don’t remember we have to add the word “de”.

So “no me acuerdo de la palabra” means “I can’t remember the word”. There is another word for “to remember” which is “recordar”, which also means “to remind”. However, the Spanish tend to favour “acordarse”.

The next one is “apuntarse” which means “to sign up”.

“Apuntar” on its own means to “make a note”, so there is an

idea of “noting” one’s name on a list. If we wanted to put our names down for a course we would say: “Quiero apuntarme a un curso.” This is also used in a figurative way. If I want to join a group of friends to go for a meal, for example, I might say “me apunto también” (I’ll sign up as well).

“Cuidar” means to “look after” or “care for”, so to look after a child, for example, is “cuidar a un niño”. The reflexive verb is “cuidarse” so if we want to say to someone: “look after yourself” or simply “take care” the expression is “cuídate”, the “te” part being the reflexive pronoun.

A slightly longer expression is “darse cuenta” which means “to realize” or “to take into account”. A phrase we may hear quite often, and which is very useful for us as well is: “No me di cuenta” which simply means “I didn’t realize”. This is one to remember when excusing yourself for putting your foot in it.

The same reflexive verb “darse” has various uses, another one being “to turn round” which is “darse la vuelta”. If you want to tell someone to turn round you would say” ¡Date la vuelta!”

And finally, here is the most useful and friendly one of all – “preocuparse” – “to worry”. I’m sure at least once you have heard “¡No te preocupes!” or the formal version “¡No se preocupe!” said to you when you were feeling anxious about something, but you might not have understood it at the time. It simply means “Don’t worry!” and is used in a multitude of situations. It makes a good alternative to the old chestnut “No pasa nada” and is just a nice expression to use to calm someone down who might be getting flustered or upset.

So, are you still having trouble with these reflexive verbs?

Musings from Little Poppet, the cottage under the White Horse Hill of Uffington

When my little cottage was built on the hill from the local Cotswold stone, mined locally under the White Horse Hill, George 111 was on the throne, William Blake had written the wonderful Jerusalem and the Napoleonic wars were in full swing.

Little Poppet began life on the main London Street, as a tiny one up and one down residence for a family working for the local Squire. Tacked on to a larger house with the old black range and bread oven, coal cellar and outside toilet pit, it will have sheltered many families, had love, hate, despair, sorrow and joy infused within its golden stone – so many memories, so many tales it could tell. A major battle took place during the Civil War at the bottom of the garden. Bearing witness to so very much, the little cottage and the garden is a magical place, now giving shelter and love to me, my 3 beloved Rescue cats and all the friends and family who visit.

Aggie is the elderly tabby, rescued from the streets of Gibraltar and forever eating for comfort (due to her childhood), she is a very rotund old lady. Adoring all humans, Aggie hates all other animals. Running full pelt down the garden so that she can take a swipe at the agile Lennie, she realises too late

that her belly gives too much momentum, she can’t stop and is a somersaulting ball embedded in the lavender hedge. Meanwhile, Lennie, the little Warlord of the area, just looks on bemused. He is a very lucky cat, not too bright but with spirit who has used about 4 of his 9 lives in his 6 years. On a hot June day, at 6 weeks old he fell 10 feet out of the hay bales where he was born to a little feral mother. Fortunately, I was down at the farm that day feeding the multitude of feral cats.

Purely by chance I looked around the barn and thought at first it was a dead kitten lying motionless on a stone. When I got closer he turned his little head and I saw, his eyes were totally closed with crusted scabs and his nose was closing too. Not expecting him to live, I took him home and cleaned his eyes and nose and fed watered milk through a dropper.

The vet didn’t hold out hope with his infections and dehydrated state, but with 3 hourly feeding, he is now a strong protector of the garden and mischief maker and tormentor of the Jack Russell who lives next door. The knot hole in the fence is just large enough for Lennie to peep through and start the dog barking until the neighbours take him in through embarrassment. Lennie has won!

Bella Donna is a small, sleek black female

who had her first litter at 6 months and her second at just over a year. She is sweet and timid and her main domain is on the rooftops where she can often be found, sunning herself or gazing at the moon and stars. She rarely touches ground outside, she is the mysterious loner whose place in Little Poppet is curled up on my bed or chair. She certainly keeps out of Aggie’s way and only

tolerates Lennie if he is in a quiet mood.

At this time of year, the garden is heaving a sigh of relief and shedding all its leaves in readiness for the long sleep of winter. The last of the ripe, fragrant Worcester Pearmains cling to the tree waiting for the winds that blow from the 3 hill ranges to force them to the ground where they will lie as a gift to the land that nourished them.

A horse and flamenco show held last month (September 19) has raised €300 to help the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre save neglected and abused horses across the AliBRONCO HAS fully recovered after somecante region. In a fateful twist, one of the horses starring body tried to kill him. If we hadn’t taken him, he would have been put to sleep.” Vinnie is now about 18 years old and on medication for arthritis, but is otherwise very happy and healthy. Sue said rescuing old, sick and unwanted horses like Vinnie is a key part of the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s work. She thanked Emma, Jenni and everyone who attended last month’s event for their generous support.

The rescue centre now houses 96 horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from terrible situations of abuse and neglect. “It’s only via donations to our network of eight charity shops – donations of things like furniture, clothes and bric-a-brac – that we can generate enough money to keep it all going,” Sue said.

A pick-up service is available to collect large donated items such as furniture and each shop also offers a delivery service for large items purchased in-store. Sue is also pleased to report the Guadamar shop has now been reopened, after it was forced to close amid location difficulties.

Running for Rojales Horse Rescue Centre

The brave goal comes just months after Elaine Sissons completed a sky diving jump to celebrate her 60th birthday, raising €571 for the rescue centre in the process.

“Not content with throwing herself out of an aeroplane for us, she’s now going to do this mammoth 41-kilometre jog for us,” rescue centre co-founder Sue Weeding said.

Elaine will tackle the mountains of Pen-yghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, which are collectively known as the Three Peaks and form part of the Pennine range, in England’s north.

Elaine lives in Leeds, England, but has a holiday home in Spain and is a long-time supporter of the Rojales-based horse rescue centre, even volunteering at centre’s La Zenia charity shop during her summer vacations.

“We just think it’s lovely that British residents who have holiday homes here in Spain are willing to support us, both by volunteering at our shops and by fundraising,” Sue said.

Noon Triumph for Torrevieja’s Youth Symphony Orchestra SUNDAY’S NOON concert by JOST went to prove that the future of the music in Torrevieja is guaranteed.

by KEITH NICOL AT NOON, a wonderful, free concert was given by Torrevieja’s Youth Symphony Orchestra: Jóven Orquesta Sinfónica de Torrevieja or JOST, in the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre.

The Concerto featured many well known pieces such as the Vaughan Williams Fantasia Greensleeves, and even local content such as La Suite Simple with the composer coming from Albatera, Santiago Quinto, who opened the show.

This performance of the orchestra brought out all its dynamic talents, from the grand piano to forte, linking all the different components of the orchestra and letting one hear all the beautiful counterpoint provided by the composer. The orchestra played very well together under its director Adolfo Arronis and

more expressive subjects were treated in a very delicate way. The second half of the show started with the Pavane Op. 50 G. Fauré, from Waltz D. Shostakovich No. 2 and ending with the rhythmic Danzon No. 2 Arturo Marquez.

In the latter work we have clearly seen a development in all members of this young orchestra, who are sure to be part of the main Symphony Orchestra of Torrevieja.

After the loud and sustained applause, JOST presented the popular and uplifting number of Les Toreadors No. 1 from Carmen Suite. The concert was attended, by the president of the Cultural Association Ars Aetheria, Pelayo Mellado, the conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Torrevieja, José F. Sánchez Director, as well as councillors, Joaquín Albaladejo, Luis Maria Pizana and Thomas Ballester.

Artists For Refugees at Villamartin Plaza MONDAY IS not only a Red Day throughout Spain but a very special day at VillaMartin Plaza.

While recently migrants have received some negative publicity in the International Press, the issue will not be going away anytime soon and there are thousands of needy people in refugee camps all over Europe who require basic help, in terms of food, medication and clothing.

Artists for Refugees takes place on Monday, October 12th at VillaMartin Plaza, Orihuela Costa, starting at 2.00pm. Dozens of local artists and business are putting on a very special concert and fundraising day to raise much needed funds, supplies and awareness of the plight faced by many migrants who try to make the dangerous crossing by sea to reach Europe. The

event starts at 2.00pm and includes many local bands such Kolted, The Streeters, Pinnacles, Los Duques, Let it Roll, Backyard Session, Steve Plant, Riverside Trails, Tim Taylor, Tommy ‘Meet Laaf’ Taylor and Red Strokes.

Everyone is invoted and the more the merrier to help this very worthwhile cause. For 5.00€ you can also purchase the fabulous Solidarity calender as announced in last week’s RTN. Taste of the sea

JAVEA PORT stages a seafood inspired ‘tapas’ festival this holiday weekend with thousands of locals and residents expected to enjoy the flavours and the fun.

by JACK TROUGHTON IT IS the fourth annual ‘La Mar de Tapas’ and 20 restaurants are offering a tempting creation to attract people along the streets of the port, the ‘ruta de tapas’.

And taking place on Friday 9th October, Saturday 10th

Launching the festival on Monday

October, and Sunday 9th October, in typical Spanish ‘fiesta’ style there is much more going on – there are activities for youngsters, live jazz in the streets, an artisan craft market, and rock band Burumballa plays live on Saturday night.

Organised by the Asociacion de Comerciates y Empresarios de Aduanas del Mar, the Javea Port business association, all tapas are 1.80€ each and drinks are 1.50€. Purchase tickets from four booths along the seafront to exchange for food and drinks.

And once again a competitive edge has been introduced. A special jury will taste the different offerings to present the prize ‘Tapa 9 d’Octobre’ for the best – the title named after Friday’s 9th October Valencia day.

The Route of Tapas is open between 12.30pm to 3pm and 7.30pm to11pm on Friday and Saturday, and from 12.30pm to 3pm on Sunday.

Some establishments may only offer the tapas on terraces.

Lions Mazarron Bahia THIS YEAR will be the 4th year that the Lions have organized a ‘Strides’ event.

This consists of either a 3km or 6km walk ( roller skate or skateboard are also allowed ) along the Paseo in the Port of Mazarron. The event takes place on Saturday 14th November from 11am -2pm and the aim is to raise funds so as Children with Diabetes can attend a camp organized by the Murcia Association and Murcia Federation of Diabetes Cartagena. During the course of the camp, which runs for a week, the children learn how to control and manage their diabetes on a day to day basis whilst learning about diet and how to test and inject themselves etc but also how exercise can help.

The comments about the camp in 2015 were how much the children had enjoyed the laughter and friendship. The camp costs approx €175 euros per child and over the last 4 years the Lions have gone from funding 2 children to 10 children last year.

If you feel you would like to take part in the event please contact the Lions who are outside of Oscars on Camposol B every Friday from 10am to 1pm for a sponsor form, the cost of €3 per person is charged to cover badge and a certificate, there is also the opportunity to buy a t-shirt for €2. If you are unable to undertake the walk how about sponsoring one of the Leos, the junior section of the Lions, this can yet again be organized at the Lions stand every Friday.

Up coming events are: 12th November: Fun raising race night with a difference at Marianno’s. Not your usual big screen event but an audience participation event, ask at the Lion’s Friday Stand. Entrance €10, which includes Chicken & Chips, a race card and your first bet.

14th November: STRIDES. Raising funds for Diabetes awareness camp for children.

Citroen Berlingo Multispace DRIVING THE Citroen Berlingo Multispace reignites memories for me of 1977 – 1984 and the first leisure vehicle inspired by Range Rover - its similar, if taller than the Rancho. The Pope-mobile inspired design is not my typical choice of transport. However, it is a true multipurpose vehicle ideal for taking my wife, her parents and our baby daughter on a family trip to London.

The sliding rear doors are easy to operate, great for car parks where there’s never enough room to open a normal car door properly – useful when strapping Harriett into her baby seat.

The boot makes light work of luggage and there are plenty of cubby holes, with helpful overhead storage above the boot - see the video at testdrives.biz: the boot cover can be lifted from inside. There’s a high driving position. While at first the seats seem pretty comfortable, over a long journey they could be more supportive. The interior is spacious and snazzy and the dashboard is user-friendly and funky: copious amounts of glass ensure plenty of light and air.

The handbrake is a bit close to the driver’s seat for comfort but you get used to it. Its gutsy 1.6litre, 90bhp diesel can cover over 600 miles with its 60 litre tank. The five-speed box is perfectly adequate but a sixth gear might further improve economy.

Rear passengers have roof mounted air vents and fan control and air conditioning creates a pleasant climate.

The Berlingo Multispace is surprisingly

compact considering the room inside. A mammoth tailgate makes great shelter from the rain. However, the driver has to remember to leave space behind him in order to access the boot.

Driving - a little remote and cumbersome, with vision impeded by the centre pillar, so extra care is required when overtaking. No cruise control for motorway travelling; and if fifth gear is engaged at 30mph the vehicle shudders, resulting in a rattle from the dash.

Car expert Parkers say: “Spacious, practical and brimming with family-friendly features, the Berlingo Multispace is a fiveseat people carrier for buyers on a budget. It sits between the cheaper Xsara Picasso and stylish C4 Picasso in the Citroen range but, unlike its predecessor, is no longer based on a van.

Instead it uses car underpinnings, is comfortable and surprisingly good to drive as a result.”

Similar to variants from both Fiat and Peugeot, also unconventionally styled, these vehicles are popular with families but the Citroen is particularly so due to its incredibly well-designed interior, keen price and strong economy.

The ball was being moved with a positive tempo and the intense pressing game when without the ball appeared to have returned.

Juanfran, in front of the excellent Fondo Sur drums, had a half chance but was only able to find the goalkeeper with a tame shot. Despite all their attacking invention, each time Crevillente got past the Torrevieja midfield it looked like there might be trouble and there was at the first time of asking.

Vicente was slow to close down Tonino and his cross was headed past Miguel by Jaime, Miguel possibly thinking he could have done more to stop the ball creeping in. You could feel the confidence drain from the players instantly, and it was odds on that Crevillente could pounce again. They did, just five minutes later. Again Vicente was unable to prevent the cross, a lucky deflection then falling to Carlos totally unmarked.

went on the attack. Crevillente barely got a touch of the ball for the remainder of the first half and just after half an hour Sanchez let fly the sort of cross-cum-shot that Willian of Chelsea has become a specialist in and the ball sailed over the head of Rojo and Torrevieja were back in the game. The score was 2-1 at half time to the visitors.

The second half started with more effort than finesse and it looked initially as though Crevillente were going to be able to sit deep and maybe pick up a third on the counter attack. Twenty minutes passed and Quintero intercepted the ball at the back and laid it wide to Adrian who dribbling twenty yards himself before swinging the ball into the goalmouth where Rojo came to collect, but just as his hands were about to clutch the ball the big forehead of Quintero intercepted and the ball looped into the corner of the net and the Vicente Garcia exploded. For the second time this season Quintero had scored the equalising goal from a 2-0 deficit.

“Los Clasicos de Sal” moves on to part two this weekend, 11th October. CD Torrevieja entertain another local rival in Orihuela, with a 5pm kick off. With one point separating the

two sides towards the bottom of the Tercera Division, it promises to be an entertaining battle. It is a Dia del Club, meaning all non-season ticket holders will pay 12€ to get

in, and season ticket holders a reduced 8€.

Break out the pink shirts “No we are not rerunning Benidorm Pride, but British Motor Racing fans will be celebrating the news that Jenson Button will be competing for Maclaren-Honda next season.

The pink shirts were symbolic of his much loved dad John, a former Rallycross Champion, who always wore one in the pit lane on race day, and sadly passed away following a heart attack last year, when supporters at the British GP at Silverstone filled the stands and surrounding spectator areas with pink shirts.

Jenson’s F1 career appeared to be over at the end of 2014 when Maclaren boss Ron Dennis wanted to replace him with young Danish driver Kevin Magnussen, having signed up double former world champion Fernando Alonso for a reputed 25 million a year. Other members of the management team disagreed with this idea and Jenson carried on in 2015, and following several “ very good chats “ with Ron recently has agreed to continue through 2016. This is probably good news for Maclaren as it is by no means certain that Fernando will be appearing again next year with the terrible performance of the new Honda engines, and FIA Race Director Charlie Whiting almost had to impose a bleep button on the broadcast team radio at the last GP in Japan when Alonso was literally blasted out of the way on a straight by a Sauber, and was not overly impressed!

In all seriousness it is inconcieveable that a massive organisation like Honda will not get to grips with their current problems, having powered three drivers to five consecutive World Championships for both Williams and Maclaren in the late Eighties and early Nineties, however the complexity of current F1 regulations makes this a steep learning curve, they need another season, and the tremendous experience which Jenson can bring to the cockpit in developing the car. In some ways, whist recognising that F1 does pass developments down to the motor industry and improves the cars that appear on all our roads, it makes one wish for the good old days of Ford Cosworth V8’s, 5 speed manual gear boxes, and no pit stops. Oh well, that’s progress.”

ON SUNDAY in ‘Los Clasicos de Sal Part One’, CD Torrevieja stormed back from two goals down to take a totally deserved point against Crevillente at Estadio Vicente Garcia.

Torrevieja’s best performance of the season was an entertaining spectacle, a thorough mix of attacking panache, kamikaze defending, true grit and, at times, players on entirely different wavelengths. However, it made for a brilliant spectacle for the bumper crowd and everyone will have left feeling that Torrevieja will have been disappointed just to draw.
