This time, the attack on the PP was regarding a lack of social housing built during their last mandate. PP spokesperson and former mayor Eduardo Dolon has come right back at them saying: “If the pentapartito concern about this issue was actually real and not just a new attempt to attack the Popular Party with manipulation and misinformation, the current Valencian Consell, being of the same political colour, should by now be investing in Torrevieja and an agreement should have been signed between the two institutions for the construction of 116 dwellings on the municipal land that is available.”

The Partido Popular spokesman in the city of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, said he had reviewed the statements made by the Councillor for Town Planning, Fanny Serrano, and Councillor for Heritage, Victor Ferrández and their accusations about the ‘earlier government’ of having “squandered Municipal Heritage Land”.

The Mayor flanked by councillors of NGO and Third Age at Monday’s U3A meeting

AMONG THE very first acts to be carried out by Torrevieja’s new coalition pentapartito council, was the closing of the satellite Padron desk at the Department of Tourism, cancellation of the Summer Parade, stopping work on the park in La Siesta and most importantly, distancing themselves from more than 100,000 International Northern European residents, by closing the Foreign Residents Office.

After almost 150 days in office they have been either incapable, unprofessional, inexperienced or possibly just hiding behind closed doors and not wishing to help Torrevieja Citizens (take your pick) by not updating the municipal website at www.torrevieja.es to include a single email address to allow residents a line of contact to the pentapartito. Go and visit the council’s second floor offices at the Town Hall and you will probably find a few people being turned away. They then make their way to the fourth floor, where the Partido popular are located, where usually 20 to 50 people a day visit, for advice and a friendly ear, in a variety of languages.

Coming in under the ‘you couldn’t make it up’ category comes a letter from Mick Adamson, who expresses the frustrations of many local residents, both Spanish and Internationals, on the situation of trying to deal with the pentapartito council. Mr. Adamson says: “I’ve tried telephoning, writing letters, emailing, queuing, and shouting through the letter box, but I still haven’t been able to get an answer to the questions I wish to put to the Torrevieja coalition party in the Town Hall. So in desperation, I have bought a Ouija board, because it looks like my best bet. OK, I’m making a joke about something that isn’t actually funny, but how else can we, the citizens of Torrevieja raise awareness of what many of you have already discovered – that a five party coalition doesn’t work – literally and fundamentally. And if the deafening silence coming out of the Town Hall is anything to go by, neither are the Town Councillors. So why

has the new Lord Mayor erected such a huge, unassailable barrier between us the people and them, the people paid to represent us, manage the towns’ budgets, maintain services, clean our streets and organise essential services. To say nothing about providing feed-back. Did I say feed-back, well there’s a major failure to start with. Represent us? – How will we ever know – they’ve withdrawn into the Town Hall, pulled up the drawbridge, and disappeared. Manage our services? – Well, we’ve all seen the increasing amount of rubbish and litter on the streets, the weeds sprouting at the roadside, and we’ll soon have more rats than a Communist Party.

So what can the matter be? In the absence of any explanation from the coalition, I think I know. The five parties that purport to represent us are so diverse they cannot agree – so there is no common purpose, no direction, no agreement, and certainly no manifesto. Our new Lord Mayor obviously has such a problem getting any sort of agreement, regarding anything; that he has to constantly share out the perks, which is a form of bribery to do what they were elected to do. So dig out your Ouija boards, because its’ looking like our only option.”

And while Mr. Adamson may be adding a touch of humour to the situation, much of what he has to say is mirrored by many other residents. Trying to gather a few political points, the Mayor, Jose Manuel Dolon showed up unannounced at the U3A meeting on Monday, which was surprise to all, but welcomed by the group for his interest in seeing what they were all about. He said: “you have the open doors of the City Hall and at you disposal twelve councillors to meet your needs and concerns.”

However, it’s unlikely that things have changed in the last four days and should you or Mr. Adamson wish to see a councillor, best go to the PROP office, put in a formal request, and they, the council, will be back in touch with you with an appointment. Or at least, that’s what you have to do if you wish to see the Mayor.

NEWS BITES CARTAGENA TO CUT DOWN DANGEROUS TREES

THE CITY of Cartagena will start next week to cut down 17 trees in the Calle Príncipe de Asturias because they are in danger of falling because their roots have undergone a process of decay.

The oriental banana trees will be cut down as a precaution after one of the trees fell a few days ago as a result of decaying roots, according to local sources. It is believed this situation has arisen as a result of works carried out some years ago in the area, requiring the digging of a trench that could have affected the trees, which have grown to a considerable size. The trees that are expected to be cut down are all located on the line of the trench that was dug, and municipal services will use this opportunity to also carry out some specific pruning of branches of other trees in the area. To carry out these works it will be necessary to close off the street, but the closures will be staggered to avoid, as far as possible, nuisance to local residents. The City plans to replace the trees in the area gradually as and when it considers that these banana trees have come to the end of their life.

Landmark victory for bullfighting activists

by JEANETTE RICE ON WEDNESDAY morning the European Parliament voted to stop over €100 million in EU agricultural subsidies from being used to raise bulls for bullfights.

With 687 MEPs voting, 438 voted in favour of the amendment that will eventually see subsidies from the EU stop, a complete contrast to when a similar vote was held last year and MEPs voted not to make any changes.

In recent weeks tens of thousands of citizens throughout Europe contacted their MEPs begging them to vote for the amendment tabled by Dutch MEP Bas Eickhout.

The EU spends £100 million helping Spanish farmers raise animals for bullfighting with estimates putting the cost of bullfighting subsidies to the British

taxpayer at around £13.5m a year.

Both Labour and Conservative MEPs were expected to vote to scrap Brussels’ controversial support for the Spanish blood sport whilst Spanish MEPs were expected to vote for the subsidies to continue, despite growing opposition to bullfighting with less than 30 per cent of the country now supporting the century’s old tradition.

The breakdown of who voted was not available although animal rights groups were keen to thank all of those who voted in favour of the amendment.

The subsidies will not stop immediately as before the amendment become law it must be approved by the EU finance ministers, although as it would be a saving to the EU it would be hard to understand why it would not be granted approval.

POLICE SCALE DOWN MADELEINE MCCANN TEAM

LONDON’S METROPOLITANS Police has reduced the number of officers dealing with the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

A Metropolitan spokesperson said “we are now following a small number of focused lines of inquiry and have finished investigating information held by the Portuguese police.”This means that only four of the twenty nine officers will remain dedicated to the inquiry into the disappearance of Madeleine in 2007. Madeleine’s parents have said that they fully understand why the team has been cut. The inquiry has taken 1,338 statements and collected 1,027 exhibits but has not reached a conclusion yet.

Spanish flag lowered in Afghanistan FOLLOWING A fourteen year mission in Afghanistan Spanish troops lowered their flag at their Herat base in the country.

The ceremony, which was presided over by the Deputy Prime Minister, Soraya Saenz, paid tribute to the armed forces for their work in missions abroad. On January 25th 2002, departing from the military base at Zaragoza, two Hercules aircraft landed the following day at Kabul airport with 26 soldiers who made up the advance unit of the 450 that would later be deployed in Afghan territory as part of the International Security Assistance Force. Spain is leaving 25 soldiers in Kabul at the general barracks as part of the international mission led by NATO until the end of 2016. Soraya Saenz said that those who had lost their lives fulfilling their duty to bring stability and improve the future of the Afghan people would never be forgotten. Kidnap fears for helicopter crew

MEDIA REPORTS that crew members of a crashed Spanish helicopter had been rescued have been found to be untrue as Spanish and Moroccan authorities continue to search for the men.

Authorities now fear that the crew members may have been kidnapped by pirates after their aircraft ditched into the Atlantic off the coast of Western Sahara.

Spain’s defence minister has acknowledged that his ministry wrongly reported that three crew members of a military helicopter that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean had been rescued. He said all three were still missing.Speaking late Friday at a press conference at an air force base in the Canary Islands off north western Africa, Pedro Morenes said a message received from Moroccan forces was mistakenly understood to mean the crew had been rescued.

“That information had an A1 category, that is it was certified as absolutely accurate and it was for that reason we made it known to the press,” an ashen-faced Morenes said.

The alert went up at 4pm Spanish time on Thursday after the helicopter’s electronic beacon was activated. Three and a half hours later the crew of a Moroccan search and rescue helicopter reported that they had located the stricken craft

floating on the surface with its life raft next to it.

The helicopter, which had initially been found by a Dutch boat and been tethered to its side to try to keep it afloat, has now sunk in water about 30-40 meters (100-130 feet) deep.

Spain has deployed a rescue vessel with a remote-controlled submersible robot to search the wreck and is continuing to work with Morocco to find the crew. Spanish Defence Minister Pedro Morenés on Monday admitted that kidnapping was “one of the hypotheses” being investigated, while military sources said the possibility that the three men had died inside the helicopter had almost been ruled out.

Fernando Ojeda, the father of one of the missing men, said “we believe this is now a kidnapping”. Snr Ojeda who has gone from elation at hearing his son had been rescued to a feeling of grave concern for his safety met with the Defence Minister to be updated about the situation.

Spanish and Moroccan forces are stopping and checking vessels in the area, and undertaking searches in Western Saharan ports. The defence minister said this will probably be extended down the West Africa coast, including areas where pirates are known to operate.

It is believed that the helicopter crashed due to a technical problem.

Torre del Moro’s garbage tip

by KEITH NICOL THERE SEEMS to be a constant battle happening between clean up crews and some Torrevieja youths, who leave their bottles and garbage lying around at the the beauty spot of Torre del Moro.

The main entrance to the Torre del Moro is regularly left full of trash and a dozen garbage bins have their contents scattered on the floor. The latest incident happened last weekend. It is not the first time and it seems that will not be the last. Employees of parks and gardens left everything in order once again after they were warned of the situation.

Slightly more than five years ago, a homeless resident used the slopes of the hill of Torre del Moro for shelter and made this area their “residence”. Since that time, periodically, for reasons that are not known, the park becomes a sort of garbage battlefield and as dawn ar-

rives, early risers are faced with a view of paper, bottles and trash scattered around the main entrance. This park is also used as a regular meeting place for young people who bring their bottles and party into the early hours, causing friction between them and local residents, and it seems these conflicts do not usually end well.

La Torre del Moro is the only one of two places of cultural interest with a watchtower in the city, with the other located next to the pier of La Mata. The tower has received successive renovations over the years, with the last one being in 1994. The area is also used for Swedish weddings and is very popular with wedding groups and photographers. The zone also has a seasonal kiosk cafe and a tourist office, although this has not been used for years. The beautiful spot has a privileged vista along the coast and the coves of Torrevieja.

British holiday maker hangs himself

British pensioner to be released

A British holiday maker who was arrested on Friday was found hanged in his cell just fifteen minutes after being locked up.

Antony Abbott was on holiday with his partner of nine years, Catherine Corless, and children Ellie, aged eight, and Louie, aged seven.

Two days before the family was due to travel back to Bolton in the early hours of Friday, Mr Abbott, aged 36, was arrested at Hotel Palm Beach for being rowdy after drinking and alleged domestic violence.

The National Police received a call in the early hours of the morning from the hotel where customers believed that Mr Abbott was assaulting his girlfriend. Hotel staff reported to the police that his partner Catherine had also called down to reception that she required assistance.

Police sources say that when they attended

the scene Mr Abbott was spoken to and that when told he was going to be arrested he resisted and was behaving in a violent manner. It was also reported that Miss Corless had some injuries.

British media were keen to report that the incident had occurred but not that it was in relation to Miss Corless being assaulted which then resulted in social media immediately assuming that the police had been at fault.

Local Benidorm media became a frenzy of supposition and guess work as some information had been released but not all the facts, resulting in Facebook users keen to apportion blame mostly incorrectly.

In one British paper it was reported that Miss Corless stated “I saw him being taken off. He turned to me and said ‘I’m sorry, I will see you soon, I love you’.

The article went on to quote Miss Corless saying “we are just devastated, when I went to identify the body on Saturday he had bruises all over his head and we are not getting any information from the police. I don’t understand what has happened, he was a good man.”

Miss Corless did not report to the press interviewing her that the bruising on Mr Abbott may have been a result of him resisting arrest and until an investigation is complete the exact details will not be known.

There is now an investigation into the incident and the events as they unfolded in the early hours of Friday morning as the Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed the death and said that they were in contact with the relevant authorities.

Miss Corless flew back to the UK with her children on Sunday.

THE BRITISH grandfather who was facing 379 lashes in Saudi Arabia will be released within the week.

The Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond, made the announcement on Wednesday during a visit to the country where the 74 year old pensioner, Karl Andree is being held.

Philip Hammond said ““I’m pleased to be able to say I have heard this morning that the public prosecutor is in the final stages of completing the necessary processes that will lead to Mr Andree’s release and return to the UK, we expect, within the next week.”

Trade and Commerce meets with Apymeco

LAST THURSDAY the General Director of Trade and Commerce of the Generalitat Valenciana Ignacio Costa, visited Torrevieja at the request of the Board of Apymeco, Torrevieja’s small and medium business association.

The meeting was designed to address new joint working ideas along with Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon, Councillor for Trade Manuela Osuna and technicians of the association and the council, Alfonso Murua and Carmen Garcia.

The two-hour meeting had as its objective to know more about the new lines of action that are to be developed from the Department of Commerce in different aspects such as commercial working hours and what time freedom will be afforded to local businesses. This pertains especially in the large tourist areas (ZGAT) regarding the review and updates after the initial period marked by law, the new draft of the Urban Shopping Centre in Torrevieja, with expected changes in subsidy lines for SMEs and business associations, as well as the proposal by Apymeco of a pilot project in Torrevieja to contemplate a change in the schedule of trade opening hours during the winter months, similar to those used in France, Germany or England.

The meeting took place in a friendly atmosphere at the headquarters of APYMECO affording Costa a chance to build up a closeness and knowledge of the local sector by the Director General and obtain feedback from the City’s business sector, Mayor and the Councillor for Commerce. This allowed Costa to positively evaluate his first visit to a local business association, as thus far, Ignacio Costa had not visited individually

any other association, which indicates a clear commitment to Apymeco and Torrevieja by the Ministry of Economy Sustainable Productive Sector, Trade and Labor.

From Apymeco’s viewpoint, they appreciated the care shown by the Generalitat Valenciana and the City of Torrevieja to their different claims, proposals and projects that they made, and will make a statement shortly after informing all their partners and business members.

Continued from front page THE PP spokesman referred to, in this regard, by recalling the Multi-Year Plan for Protected Housing (PPVP), that emerged from the Decree-Law 1/2008 of the Consell, of urgent measures for the promotion of housing and ground, with the aim of evaluating the possibilities of realization of the housing decree in the city, and confront it with a demand to “model” that the Department assumed depending on various factors such as the population of the city or location. Torrevieja is one of the few municipalities that have taken and passed a plan of its kind in the Valencian Community.

In this sense, Eduardo Dolon has stressed that the City had three free residential plots that met the requirements to become subsidized housing (two in the S-6 and the S-24). The previous PP plan looked at opportunities for subsidized housing, with a total of 101 apartments. They also envisaged building in the S-20 La Hoya Sector which had already been approved, with the possibility of constructing 1,573 homes. Also, the S-29 Ceñuela project was pending final approval but offered the possibility of 629 homes.

Regarding housing for young people and the great success of the first Youth promotion programme that ran in the S-9 sector, the PP had proposed to the Ministry of Housing an agreement to build 116 homes. This agreement has not been carried out primarily by the difficult financial crisis that was suffered throughout Spain.

Eduardo Dolon added: “the most regrettable thing is that the pentapartito uses families who need shelter for their own cause and the last thing they care about is to offer a solution to the problems facing the city.”

Call for expat action VETERAN ‘VOTES for all’ campaigner Harry Shindler is urging all British citizens to lobby the House of Lords as it debates the controversial European Union Referendum Bill.

He wants people to flood Members of Parliament and the Lords as a matter of urgency - calling for everyone to have a voice in the promised ‘in – out’ vote over EU membership.

At present only those expats still able to vote under the 15year rule will be able to cast a ballot – and despite making a ‘votes for life’ pledge for all UK citizens, the Government has no plans to change legislation before the referendum.

In his appeal, Harry said: “A victory for the ‘out’ vote would be most serious for all expatriate British citizens living in the EU – for them and their families. All would be affected, this is about our future.

“All my appeals to the British Government to introduce the Votes for Life bill so that it can have effect before the referendum have failed. My appeal is that all disenfranchised British citizens in the EU should have a vote in the referendum.

“I have appealed to the European Commission to urgently intervene on the behalf of British citizens.”

Harry, who has already led a deputation of the ‘Votes for All Expat Brits’ campaign to Brussels in 2013, won the backing of Commissioner Viviane Reding who then contacted

Westminster calling for all one million British expats living in EU countries to have a vote.

WRITE And he has now written to European Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos in connection with the forthcoming referendum.

The war hero, who now lives in Italy, wrote: “The Government referendum bill, if passed, would again deny we one million British expats the right to vote. We have of course raised this matter with the Government but to no avail.

“Hence we turn to the Commission, asking they intervene urgently on our behalf. You will, I’m sure, agree that we British citizens living in Europe are more concerned than any other sector with the outcome of the referendum and should be allowed to vote.”

Amendments the Bill are expected in the Lords – the debate started this week - calling for a vote for all British citizens.

Campaigners say if passed such a move would be a victory for democracy and would mean the House of Commons would have to revisit the proposed legislation – however, uncertainty remains over the success of any such challenge.

Instead, people are now invited to throw their weight behind the campaign and write to a member of the Lords or an MP. Addresses are available at www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices.

by JEANETTE RICE ON SATURDAY thousands of people gathered in cities across Europe to protest about the NATO exercises currently taking place in the Mediterranean countries.

Anti war protesters gathered in Italy, Spain and Portugal to show their opposition to the war games taking part in their respective countries and being run by the US led NATO military alliance.

Demonstrators chanted anti NATO and anti US slogans as they carried their banners through Naples, Madrid and Lisbon.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization embarked on a major military exercise on September 28th in bases in Spain, southern Italy, as well as Portugal involving 36,000 air, land, and marine troops from over 40 countries and organizations. The war games, the NATO’s largest in the past 13 years, is set to continue until November 6th.

Organized by the Global Platform Against Wars, the protesters marched from Callao Square in Madrid to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, waving anti-war banners and chanting slogans such as “No to NATO, bases out”, “Imperialism is terrorism”, and “Yankees go home.”

One member of the Spanish Platform, Juan Miguel Fernández, stated that these manoeuvres encourage “the militarization of Spain”, and consequently increases the “military spending to the detriment of other social spending” and has claimed that manoeuvres are “something that most of Spain does not want.”

This latest wave of protests comes as the military alliance has drastically expanded its war games in eastern European countries neighbouring Russia, in what Moscow has censured as provocations over the persisting Ukraine conflict in a bid to expand military presence near Russia.

A statement issued by NATO said the objective of Trident Juncture, which is taking place in Portugal, Spain and Italy, “it is in the interest of NATO to enhance its capacity to meet the challenges of the future.”

NEWS BITES WOMAN ARRESTED WITH 18 KILOS OF CANNABIS AN IRISH woman living in Estepona, Costa del Sol, has been arrested following a spot check on the coach that she was travelling on.

The 41 year old woman was detained after officers found the cannabis in a suitcase and the woman admitted that it was hers. The incident occurred at a motorway rest area 240km south of Madrid, the coach had departed from Algeciras and was bound for Irun on Spain’s border with France. She has been remanded in jail after appearing before an investigating judge in a private court hearing.

MID WEEK HOLIDAYS SET TO STAY

Hotel tax proposed for Valencian Comunidad

DESPITE THE current government promising to end mid week holidays in Spain, four years later there is no change.

Most autonomous communities have already approved the set dates and in the vast majority of cases their calendars continue with the mid week (macropuente) dates which it is argued cost business more and workers a broken week.

Major employers had proposed that ten of the fourteen public holidays in the year be moved to a Monday with popular approval from union groups and employees that definitely three could be moved. These being Tuesday 1st November, Tuesday 6th December and Thursday 8th December.

In practical terms this means that there are several weeks in the 2016 calendar where there are only three or less working days and during the Christmas period smart employees could end up with almost two weeks of holiday just by booking Monday 28th December to Thursday 31st December and Monday 4th January to Tuesday 5th January off. This would mean 13 days off work just by booking 6 days holiday.

The director of Economics in Madrid has implied that there seemed to be little interest in moving some of the holidays to a Monday whilst the employer and union representatives have said they are still open to agreeing the changes. Back in 2011, when the debate first began, business owners stated that Monday’s were the least productive days and that they supported the proposed changes particularly as it would mean not having so many stopstart weeks.

Hoteliers argue that this tax would discourage visitors

by JEANETTE RICE A HIGHLY controversial hotel tax is being considered by the regional government of the Comunidad Valencia.

The regional government is considering the tax which would operate in a similar style to that of the “eco-tax” already in place in Catalunya and being considered in the capital city of Madrid.

The hotel tax would be charged to hoteliers within the region for rooms booked during the year by people from outside the Valencian Comunidad but there is a growing anti-tax campaign particularly from the hoteliers themselves.

Hoteliers argue that this tax would discourage visitors from outside the region booking and that they have had to cut their prices to maintain a level of occupancy, indicating that holidaymakers shop around and may be put off by this tax, even if it is relatively small.

Survey confirms Spain as top retirement destination

A RECENT survey conducted by Retirement Advantage in the UK confirmed that Spain is still the preferred retirement destination.

The survey asked UK residents over 50 years old if they were considering retiring abroad and, if so, where?

As more and more British consider moving to foreign lands, usually for warmer winters and cheaper housing costs, the poll also gave some surprising results.

Spain received 24% in the survey with France a close second and Greece, Turkey and Cyprus also featuring. These seem to be the traditional destinations as many feel that the growing expat populations will enable them to settle better.

The poll found that growing numbers were considering retiring outside of Europe with 22% considering North America and a further 12% wanting to go to the Caribbean.

With the ability for internet users to book cheap flights it would seem that countries further afield are becoming more appealing for those considering their future retirement.

In Catalunya the tax, of between 0.45 and 2.25 euros, is charged per night and is similar to other countries such as France who operate a room tax and normally charge the guest when they arrive at the hotel.

For a family of four on a two week holiday in the region this could be approximately 100 euros extra to find, although within the plans being considered is whether a maximum levy should be applied so that long term visitors are not overly penalised.

The final proposals are still being discussed including if a guest to a camp site should pay the same as a guest in a five star hotel.

Defending the proposals the regional government said that the revenue from such a tax would help reduce the amount of tax that residents in the Comunidad pay.

The government is currently weighing up if the tax benefits would outweigh the resistance that they may face from the hoteliers before they decide if it should be implemented in 2017.

Food poisoning at special school THREE STUDENTS at the Primitiva López Special School in Cartagena are still in Santa Lucía Hospital after being affected by an outbreak of food poisoning at the school.

A laboratory investigation in Murcia has identified salmonella in samples of food served last week at the school.

Three of the over twenty college students with disabilities who attend the Primitiva López School are still in hospital. Their ages range between five and eight. There was a fourth child admitted, who has now been discharged after remaining under observation in the emergency department pre-admission unit. A hospital spokeswoman has confirmed that, during the last four days, the ER has treated 22 cases of children with similar symptoms that did not require admission. “We cannot be sure all are students of this school,” said the spokeswoman,” but, during the first two days of this week, absences of children enrolled at the school were around that figure. We have also learned of four adults who have been affected in a mild way”.

Meanwhile, after a public health food inspector recovered samples of food served last week at the school, laboratory research in Murcia has, so far, established that it was one of the foods served that caused the outbreak, but the investigation is ongoing, with further results possibly available shortly.

Sabic plans a pipeline SABIC PLANS a pipeline to carry material from the Port of Cartagena to its factories in La Alhorra, between Cartagena and Fuente Alamo, in order to reduce costs of its production process.

Sabic’s Cartagena plants, formerly General Electric Plastics, currently produce over 200,000 tons/year of engineered plastics. More than 90% of the products manufactured in Cartagena are sent to international markets in Europe and Asia, where they are used for making products such as “Multimedia Goods” (CDs and DVDs), automotive components, telecommunications terminals, computers, and other applications.

Sabic has proposed a “pipeline” to carry material from the Port of Cartagena to its factory to reduce costs, announced the mayor of Cartagena, José López, who also explained that, at present, the company has to transport by road all goods arriving by boat.

Lopez went on to explain that they are now studying, together with the regional administration the practicality of bringing products directly via underground pipe.

The mayor explained after a visit to Sabic, “We have seen the plant in detail, we have discussed the past, present and future of the facility, the jobs it provides to the city, county and region, among other things”.

Lopez also highlighted the green issues, pointing out the advantages of a pipeline in terms of the absence of chemical odours, together with the low level of noise pollution.

The mayor also said that while the industry is seeing job cuts worldwide, in Cartagena Sabic is making a great effort not to cut the workforce.

TEATRO CIRCO NOW ACCESSIBLE TO ALL

THE USE of subtitles and sign language to facilitate understanding has allowed the Teatro Circo in Murcia to join the initiative that has been implemented in major theatres throughout Spain, with the aim of facilitating access to the theatre for the hearing and visually impaired. This project provides an opportunity for access to content and leisure spaces for people with sensory disabilities through a set of services which include subtitles, sign language, audio description and Braille, among others. According to the councillor for employment, tourism and culture, Jesus Pacheco, “Collaborating with The Accessible Theatre Initiative is a step forward in Murcia, since there is hardly any accessible theatre activity for people with disabilities.” For her part, the councillor for social welfare, Conchita Ruíz explained that “it is a priority for the government team to eliminate the many barriers facing people with disabilities in their daily lives, not only physical, but many others, often invisible, that prevent communication or access to information and audiovisual content. We are working towards achieving full accessibility in the municipality of Murcia to ensure that the needs of people with disabilities are taken into account in all areas of activity”. The Vodafone Foundation and Aptent, the company that launched this project, with technology developed by a research team from the University Carlos III in Madrid, have also developed a mobile application for accessible theatre, to provide subtitling and audio description of performances

Football ticket fiasco

HUNDREDS OF complaints have been flooding in about the ticket booking system used by the Spanish Football Federation for the England v Spain Friendly game which will take place on 13th November at Hercules ground in Alicante.

Last week Vicente del Bosque, visited Alicante to present details of the friendly football match, to be played at the José Rico Pérez Stadium. The Spanish football federation originally planned to play the match in Madrid, however, thanks to the work of the Costa Blanca Tourist Board, the venue was changed to Alicante. The official ceremony that was chaired by the President of the Provincial Council, Cesar Sanchez and the president of the Valencian Football Federation, Vicente Muñozhe along with Vicente del Bosque.

Tickets for the game went on sale, online only, on Wednesday. However what the RFEF did not tell us, was that they had only set aside 8,000 tickets that could be booked online, although that number may have been added to. In much the same way that it was almost impossible to book tickets online through the various booking agents for Torrevieja’s cultural performances over the years, for many the booking process was a shambles. Those interested would receive messages that they could not use specific credit cards, that their NIE would not be accepted and it should be a DNI and the booking engine was so slow that in the process of saving seats, another person online could interrupt the booking and take your chosen seats, meaning one had to start the process all over again, with the system timing out, again and again.

Since the REFE’s official player registration system is also a shambles and years out of date with its database management, this did not come as a surprise to many, but certainly was frustrating.

The ticket prices for this event, which will serve as preparation for Euro 2016 in France, range between 20€ to 60€. While the game has been brought to Alicante with all the very best of intentions, even the Deputy of Tourism for the region, Eduardo Dolon could not be prepared for the incompetence displayed by such a booking system. It’s estimated that the match between Spain and England will generate an economic impact of more than three million euros, announced by the vice president and deputy of Tourism, Eduardo Dolon, after the results of the analysis conducted by the Board Costa Blanca.

Dolon explained that “the organization will sell 5,000 tickets for England fans. In addition, we estimate that during the

days 13th, 14th and November 15th, over 5,000 will travel to the province. In total, we estimate that the Costa Blanca will receive 10,000 British citizens during that weekend. If we consider that the average consumption of every fan during that time will be around 300€, we reach the number of three million euros.” The autonomous body of the Provincial Council of Alicante will use its presence at the World Travel Market in London early next November, to promote this game of football, “which involves an unique opportunity to promote tourism in the province in England, leading international market source of tourists to the Costa Blanca.”

The importance of this sporting event has aroused so much interest among fans that the 8,000 tickets that the Royal Spanish Football Federation offered for sale online were exhausted in just ten hours, as confirmed by the organization.

PATHOLOGY SERVICE IN CARTAGENA GOES DIGITAL

CARTAGENA HOSPITALS have now implemented a digital pathology system to improve diagnoses, allowing the monitoring of samples submitted for study in real time. The new system allows doctors from the hospitals St. Lucía and Santa María del Rosell to share their work via the internet and thereby increase diagnostic quality and patient safety.

This system of digital pathology, which is state-of-the-art in the region, was implemented through so called “telepathology” which was launched in the two hospitals in 2014 with a first phase to digitally share a system of traceability of biopsies and surgical specimens.

Later, in February 2015, they began a second phase to digitize pathological preparations.

Today, the Pathology Service has an electronic traceability system that allows the tracking of samples sent for study and the knowledge, at all times and in real time, of where they are, who is dealing with them, and where results will be archived.

The system also allows pathological preparations, once scanned on a specific scanner, to be displayed on high resolution screens instead of via a microscope, which means the pathologist can edit and save images, to ease their availability for future study.

A hospital source stated that these digital and traceability systems “significantly increase patient safety and diagnostic quality, while eliminating the need for travel between both hospitals for consultations between pathologists and weekly clinic sessions”.

In the future, this system will also allow the creation of a regional telepathology portal.

New Cultural programme fails to materialise

Ars Creario present four lectures and two plays for the remainder of 2015

TORREVIEJA’S CULTURAL association Ars Creatio presented their agenda of events for November and December. Along with the councillor of Culture, Alejandro Blanco, they have prepared the schedule through to the New Year, culminating with the celebration of their tenth anniversary. Activities include the VII Science Week and two plays.

The UN has declared 2015 as the International Year of Light in order to highlight the importance of this element and its associated technologies in key areas such as energy, education and communication.

Maria Luisa Molina, a member of the organization who holds a PhD in Biology has been in charge of organising and presenting the VII Science Week. For this reason, ‘light’ will be the centrepiece of the four talks that will offered in the casino on the 10th, 17th, 19th and 24th November at 7pm, by professors of various departments of the University Miguel Hernández.

Josefina Nieto is in charge of presenting the plays that have been included in the schedule. “Apuesta en la Hostería del Laurel” is the title of the work written by the editor of the magazine Ars Creatio, Antonio Sala Buades and will be staged on 14th November at 8pm at the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre. The other performance is entitled “Joaquín Chapaprieta y su afán de concordia” that will take place on 12th December at 8pm in the Casino of Torrevieja Cultural Society.

Councillor Alejandro Blanco thanked the association for their efforts and the fact that they “devote their time as volunteers

to do things for others.”

To date, this is all that the entire Department of Culture has been able to present as cultural activities for residents and visitors to Torrevieja, which was once a thriving city for cultural entertainment and performances. The offerings from Ars Creatio certainly have their place and almost everything from Ars Creatio is of an extremely high standard.

Torrevieja’s Department of Culture under the guidance of Councillor Alejandro Blanco, has yet to confirm if there will be a carol Service in the Square or any other activities taking place throughout the remainder of 2015, apart from exhibitions.

Remembering that more than 50% of home ownership in Torrevieja is International, the pentapartito council has offered absolutely nothing new that is attractive to an International Audience and to date, seem to be absolutely devoid of any ideas for the future of culture in the city.

Thankfully, although the doors to English Language entertainment seem to have done a Houdini and disappeared from the City of Salt, like magic, other councils such as in San Fulgencio and Los Montesinos have opened their arms to the expatriate community and you’ll find your share of Pantomime, dance and song and dance to bring cheer to the International community, while Torrevieja’s Christmas cheer seems to be similar to acting out Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ with the pentapartito acting as that bitter old miser of the Southern Costa Blanca named Ebenezer Scrooge.

Halloween contact lenses alert

by Jeanette rice TRADING STANDARDS in the UK are warning party goers against buying cheap coloured or novelty contact lenses ahead of Halloween as a teenager in America becomes another victim of the fashion accessories.

Leah Carpenter, aged 17, faces possible surgery having taken part in a fun Halloween costume party with her friends who were dressed as zombies with creepy eyes.

Leah’s mother, Dawn said, “the very next day her eye was really swollen and red so we took her immediately to get it seen to.”

For Leah the news was not good as she was told that one of the lenses had ripped out a top layer of her cornea and she now has to visit the ophthalmologist every day for treatment.

Leah said “I wish I had never worn them to be honest, my school work is really behind and my vision Is not going to be 100%.”

Trading Standards officers together with health experts in the UK have said that the lenses can lead to eye infections, headaches and sometimes blindness.

The law in the UK states that all contact lenses should be sold with an optician or medic present, despite this the fashion lenses can be bought for less than £5 on the internet.

Kelly Plahay, optometrist and acting chairman of the Eyecare Trust said: “All contact lenses whether you wear them for fun or to correct your vision require the same level of care and attention because improper use can lead to serious eye infections, corneal ulcers, abrasions and even blindness or the loss of an eye.

Leon Livermore, Chartered Trading Standards Institute chief executive, said “we would advise against buying products like these online or from retailers as without professional supervision there are more likely to be health concerns for the individual.”

Halloween for all who dare

WITH AN announcement that was better late than never, RTN readers may be pleased to know that downtown Torrevieja will have a fun range of activities for all the family to partake in.

On Tuesday, Torrevieja’s Councillor for Commerce and Catering, Manuela Osuna, Councillor for Culture, Alejandro Blanco and the president of APYMECO, Caridad Salmeron, presented the campaign that has been jointly prepared , just ahead of the celebration of the feast of Halloween.

During 31st October, about forty shops in the downtown locality will be giving and taking part in a ‘trick or treat’ promotion, or to be more precise, it’s really a treat as they all have candies and sweets to give to children who visit them, plus various restaurants have prepared a special and fun “zombie menu” for the occasion.

The Municipal Institute of Culture have prepared various activities with the intention to add a little Halloween atmosphere to the streets of the town, including most notably, a parade with a Halloween related theme which is open to all those who and wish to come in costume. The parade will start 5:30pm from the Plaza de la Constitución and along the streets of Ramón Gallud, Joaquín Chapaprieta, Pedro Lorca, Rambla de Juan Mateo and Caballero de Rodas.

In the pedestrian streets there will also be workshops, such as making pumpkins heads, games and theatre of fear, which will happen between 6pm and 7pm, while in the Plaza of the Constitution from 7pm to 9pm it’s scary story time and kids can hear terrifying tales, as “The legend of Jack and the Lantern”.

Torrevieja’s schools and colleges have received 10,000 brochures that include information on all the activities that will develop throughout the day along with the so-called ‘zombie passport’. Those that get the seal of at least eight shops which have joined in with the celebration and once collected, you may redeem your passport for a gift in the Plaza de la Constitution. Those who have made purchases this week in retail or catering establishments in Torrevieja can enter the draw for 10 tickets for Survival Zombie event. The draw will be held tomorrow, 31st October, in the Plaza of the Constitution at 1pm. Well, we did warn you that the news was better late than never.

Meanwhile in the spooky hamlet of La Mata, in the Plaza Encarnación Puchol, there is also scheduled a Halloween parade, which will take place from 11am to 1pm with ‘celebrities’ who will dress for the occasion, and all children who wish to may participate. Actress Maureen O’Hara dies at 95 MAUREEN O’Hara, the flame-haired Irish film star who appeared in classics ranging from the grim “How Green Was My Valley” to the uplifting “Miracle on 34th Street” and bantered unforgettably with John Wayne in several films, has died aged 95.

O’Hara died in her sleep at her home in Boise, Idaho, said Johnny Nicoletti, her long time manager.

“She passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family as they celebrated her life listening to music from her favourite film, ‘The Quiet Man,’” said a statement from her family.

A family spokesperson said “as an actress, Maureen O’Hara brought unyielding strength and sudden sensitivity to every role she played. Her characters were feisty and

fearless, just as she was in real life. She was also proudly Irish and spent her entire lifetime sharing her heritage and the wonderful culture of the Emerald Isle with the world.”

O’Hara left Ireland for Hollywood to star in the 1939 “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and went on to have a long career, including “Rio Grande” in 1950, her first of five films with John Wayne and it was said that she was his favourite leading lady.

During her filming heyday, she became known as the Queen of Technicolor because of the camera’s love affair with her vivid hair, pale complexion and fiery nature.

NEWS BITES IT’S A WRAP – GAME OF THRONES SAYS ADIÓS

SPAIN SAID goodbye to the cast and crew of Game of Thrones season six, which has been filming on location around the country.

The popular television series filmed in Girona, Bardenas Reales, Zafra Castle, Peñíscola, and Almería for its “seven kingdoms” celebrated at their wrap party with a cake showing images of the five major sites used when filming. All the spoilers point to a dramatic season ahead, which it seems will almost certainly see the resurrection of Jon Snow, along with the return of a few old faces.

There is still some filming to be done in Northern Ireland particularly inside shots and the western-based scenes with season 6 expected air date to be April 2016.

Santiago de Compostela now closer to Antarctica

SANTIAGO DE Compostela and Antarctica will now be closer together thanks to the crew of the research vessel Hespérides, based in Cartagena. Members of the crew will soon be establishing, in the Spanish base in the frozen continent, the starting point of the longest Camino de Santiago, a distance of 14,075 kilometers.

The President of the Spanish Federation of Friends of the Camino de Santiago, Ángeles Fernández, handed over the signpost aboard the ship, docked at Arsenal Naval Base, in Cartagena. The signpost, which shows the direction to Santiago de Compostela and the distance (14,075 kilometers), will be installed at the Spanish base along with a commemorative pennant.

Military personnel at the base, together with members of the Hespérides’ crew, will become the first pilgrims to travel the route when the ship returns to Spain after the research campaign ends next spring.

Fernández explained that these pilgrims will travel the first part of the journey on the ship, and will complete the journey to Santiago by travelling from Cartagena to the Navy Base in Pontevedra also by boat and, from there, walking to Santiago de Compostela, a distance of 22 kilometers.

The expedition will also be responsible for bringing up from the Antarctic base the Santiago Memorial Pennant, which will be donated and exhibited in the museum of the Cathedral of Santiago.

The presentation ceremony was chaired by the new head of the Arsenal Naval Base, Admiral Marcial Gamboa.

WTM 2015 is expected to attract 50,000 global travel professionals and is the must attend event for the industry. WTM sees representatives from every sector of the travel industry come together. More than £2.5 billion of travel industry deals was generated as a result of WTM 2014. WTM is the place to meet and do business with up to 5,000 International exhibitors. The exhibition is split by region and product with all areas of the globe and each industry sector represented.

Evening of Memories JUST BRASS was formed in 2003 and over the last 12 years has grown to become the leading brass band on the Costa Blanca. We are fortunate and privileged to include within our ranks players from many of the top UK brass bands, including Brighouse and Rastrick, Black Dyke, Fodens and Faireys to name but a few.

Just Brass not only entertains their audience with traditional brass band songs but also include many other types of music including Bohemian Rhapsody, Sweet Caroline and classic “Last Night of The Proms” pieces. I have also heard on the grapevine that a new rendition of a James Bond theme will be performed for the first time at their next concert on the 12th November in Rojales.

Band members travel from far and wide to attend rehearsals in San Miguel, from Alicante, Elche and some from the UK who have holiday homes here. No-one is paid to play with the band; in fact they pay a weekly subscription which goes towards running costs. Funds raised through concerts go towards providing uniforms for players and maintaining instruments (some of which are well past retirement age). With the recent, kind support of Avalon, Just Brass will be able to do more, sooner than previously planned. This includes a commitment to starting a junior band to give something back to the area and hopefully secure the future of the band through the young people of Costa Blanca. Our past affiliation with The Costa Blanca Lions has also enabled them to make regular contributions to The Lions and to other local charities including AECC. When the Just Brass members moved to Spain, most of them

gave up on their hope of playing their beloved instruments in a band. However due to many other like-minded musicians they were able to create the band. All the band members are proud and privileged to perform entertaining music to such appreciative audiences and to show a very positive side to expat life here in Spain.

Chris’s Corner LAST WEEK I regaled you with my car crash career on New Zealand telly. Bah! Kiwi Ingrates. Bitter? A tad. Put it down to them being, in the nicest possible way, a wee bit behind the times.

For example, when you’re flying into NZ, the pilot comes on the intercom and says “Ladies & Gentlemen we are landing at Auckland International Airport, please set your watches back – 30 years” So back to Blighty and Stardom - if that whippersnapper Schofield can crack it with a big fat ratty thing called Gordon which turned him grey overnight – no problems for the Boy Ashley. Through various acts of wheedling, pleading & good old fashioned blackmail I finagled an audition with Central Television. The whole session was overseen by the wonderfully generous kind soul - Billy Wright – a fine footballer and a fine Gentleman. When I arrived at the studios in Birmingham,

the Jewel of the Midlands, although Her Gracious Majesty may well disagree, (rumour has it, when she was visiting Brum, her speech writer scribed “My Husband and I are very pleased to be here” Her Majesty crossed out – very). I was ushered into the Grim Green Room where you wait for your call feeling as twitchy as a Vegan at a Hog Roast. Suddenly a trolley load of grub and grog was wheeled in by a mincing, media, minion.

How very hospitable, it was a veritable feast, no wonder ITV charges like a wounded bull for advertising to pay for this lot. As I’m the only one in the room, I availed myself – strange fare mind – Zucchini, Octopus, Pita Bread, Ouzo all at 11 o’clock in the morning, still it’s 11 o’clock at night somewhere in the World - get stuck in. Suitably replete some 30 minutes later I get my call and just as I’m waddling up the corridor coming toward me is a very diminutive Mediterranean looking Lady wearing large glasses with several large Gentlemen in tow, and she looks vaguely familiar. After my rubbish audition – Damn Ouzo! – I’m on my way out and I overhear the receptionists talking.

“Oooh! they were furious, gabbling away in Greek, apparently somebody scoffed Nana Mouskouri’s Lunch.” Right that’s that for now and by the way they’ve let me loose on the radio again. Yes Marconi’s revenge returns on Bigfm (www.bigradio.es) Monday.

OWL RESCUED ON OIL PLATFORM AN OWL lost its bearings last week and ended up over 100 miles out in the North Sea before landing completely exhausted on an oil rig.

Following a very brief stay, oil workers arranged for the bird to be flown back to dry land on one of their helicopters and taken to the SSPCA in Fishcross Alloa, Clackmannashire.

The SSPCA centre manager, Colin Seddon, said “the owl is doing very well considering his lengthy flight.”

Following a check by the vet the owl was put into the aviary where he will stay for a few weeks before being released.

WATCHING THE news recently, I am surprised by the amount of discussions and speculation regarding the possible EU referendum.

I understand this is not expected to take place until at least the year 2017 and I am sure that by the time this comes around, we will all be screaming at the word referendum. I am amazed by the diversification of views and just how many people profess to be experts. I, like many, am often very wary and cynical of the EU but I do feel that some of the UK population is anti-Europe perhaps not truly understanding the complete picture. As trading partners, nearly 50% of our exports are within the EU and I imagine it would not be easy to replace and, of course, there are many European companies operating in the UK and their loss would affect employment. The National Health, for instance, would be in a bit of a pickle without freedom of movement.

On the defence side, the UK is just too small on its own and as part of the EU we have a combined strength in these very dangerous times. The UK has a vast amount of experience to offer and I know this knowledge would be a great loss for Europe.

It is far better to be a part of a strong community.

Those against Europe are kidding themselves if they think the UK could survive better alone. In my opinion, for what it is worth, you can never go backwards and need to keep going forward, evolving as a whole in response to current events. Living in another European country does give a wider experience and therefore, not to be able to vote as an Expat upsets me, especially as we would be

more affected by a NO vote. What does annoy me is that the Commonwealth members are allowed to vote, but all ex pats who have lived outside the UK for more than 15 years do not currently have the right to do so. Why not?

A major flaw of the European Union was the inclusion of Greece – how they became members is a mystery. I also feel the recent acceptance of the Eastern European countries, although very necessary, their culture is so different from the rest of Europe. At the moment this area has been caught up with the influx of thousands of immigrants, whilst the EU seems out of their depth leaving the Eastern Bloc countries to handle the thousands on their own and their reaction has been to close the borders, which although understandable, is not what the European Union represents.

But I, along with many others, I am sure, never did feel comfortable with such open borders, especially as the UK will not introduce identity cards. I personally have no problem living in Spain with an identity card.

We can only hope that some of the fundamental rules and structure of the EU can be changed in line with the twenty first century. All the time there is money spent on discussing bent bananas and spring onions, etc is a serious waste of time and resources, especially when you consider the current costly immigration crisis.

Returning to more mundane everyday events and my Sound Advice insurance matters, I am becoming increasingly concerned about the gaps in some vehicle policies that clients may be unaware of. To

be able to offer a lower premium, some companies are quoting driver only cover. It is cheaper to select driver only but this means no one else, including your garage, can drive your car. Another way to reduce the cost of the premium is excluding the correct number of seats on the policy – which could have serious repercussions if an accident occurred which affected your passengers, as they would not have any insurance cover and could incur medical costs and loss of compensation, which may result in the driver being sued (not worth thinking about).

The other issue that keeps cropping up is a request to remove the insurance due to the vehicle being off the road for any reason, such as not being used or un-road worthy. If any accident, theft or fire involves the vehicle, the owner would be liable for any costs incurred and would be sued for no insurance. t is a legal requirement in Spain that all vehicles must be insured at all times (the only alternative is to do a temporary baja or reduce the cover to third party).

Christmas is coming (already!). Please do not be tempted to travel without insurance, especially when travelling to the US or Bahamas, etc. It could seriously damage your wealth. My company offers a very good travel insurance, but you must remember to fully declare any pre-existing conditions you may have.

Film Club gets closer

by KEITH NICOL AS ANNOUNCED last week in the RTN, the new Admit One film club has taken another step closer to starting up within the next few weeks.

However, apologies to those who could not contact the club, as good old predictive type changed the email address.

Anyone wishing to Opt In to stay in touch with all that is happening and be among the first to know what films are showing, should send an email to: film@admitone.club.

Cines IMF have confirmed that starting with SPECTRE on Friday 6th November, each week the cinema will screen a new film released that week, and if no new films are released, then another from 2016 or a popular film from 2015 will be shown. Anyone can go and watch a film in English.

You do not have to be a member of the club. You just pay the regular price at the window, However, club membership will allow you to see a film for just 5€, Monday till Thursday and 7€ on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and fiesta days. Plus, your membership card acts as a loyalty card and after seeing ten films, you can see the next one for free.

And according to deadline.com, Sam Mendes’ sophomore outing at the helm of a 007 pic hit a jackpot at the UK box office in its opening previews on Monday night. Spectre loomed large with £4.1 million taken in 647 locations

after starting showings at 8:15pm local time, just a quarter of an hour after the world premiere began at London’s Royal Albert Hall. That didn’t beat Skyfall‘s opening day in local currency (£4.1M for Spectre, £6.2M for Skyfall), but that 2012 film saw its first shows on a full Friday. Spectre had about two screenings per location with screening times for Spectre at Cines IMF to be announced next week.

Soon details will be announced as to where one can sign up for the club, although those attending SPECTRE on Friday and Saturday evening, can do so before and after the first screening of the film, with times still to be announced. LILYBETH STEVENS, the President of the Torrevieja Stroke Support group was pleased to accept a very generous donation of 314€ from Sasha Roson.

The money was collected at the funeral of Sasha´s grandmother, Mavis Roson who had suffered a stroke and sadly passed away on 16th October 2015.

Too good to be true?

AT THE supermarket, I noticed large signs announcing a 50% reduction on the second item purchased, meaning the customer pays the regular price for the first item, and the second is 50% off. Sounds simple does it not?

I saw something on sale, picked up two of them, and headed for the cashier. It has become my habit to add up the price on all the items before going to the cashier in case there is a “mistake” at the till. You guessed it, the cashier’s till had the regular price but not the 50% for the second. If I had not calculated beforehand the total amount of what I had bought, the supermarket would have taken more money from me than they should have. My wife told the cashier the amount we were being charged was wrong, and we then had to stand and wait ten minutes while other customers went ahead of us. Finally the “mistake” was corrected, without an apology of course. This supermarket always has a security guard, to watch for people stealing, but the supermarket itself is stealing from unwary customers right at the till. This supermarket has for years made “mistakes” on prices, and, guess what, the “mistakes” are 99.999% in their favour.

Watch out when you see a sales sign where the goods are displayed, but, when you go to the cashier, the sale price is conveniently not recorded in the cashier’s machine. To help protect yourself from being ripped off by the supermarket, calculate the total amount before going to pay.

The law relating to cyclists

WITH REGARD to the letter from Ray Wood re taxing bikes, I don’t normally criticise letters so I apologise to Ray Wood, but his letter about cyclists in Spain shows that maybe he should not be driving here as he does not seem to know the law relating to cyclists.

Cyclists are legally permitted to ride two abreast, and, out of towns, motorists are obliged to allow at least 1.5 metres between their vehicle and cyclists when overtaking. If that happens to cause car drivers some inconvenience by having to slow down, taking Ray Woods approach, one might say, ban cars from such roads!

In Spanish law, when a motorised vehicle is in collision with a bicycle, it is presumed that the driver of the motorised vehicle is at fault, so, Mr Wood, please bear that in mind when you are trying to rush about.

As for taxing bikes, he will be saying next that the tax should apply to pedestrians too, who have the audacity from time to time to cross the road!

Remembrance Sunday services

by JACK TROUGHTON ROYAL BRITISH Legion Branches across the region will stage moving services to mark Remembrance Sunday, which falls on 8th November this year.

Many expats wish to attend the services, marked in the UK by the ceremony at the Cenotaph in London, and the website of the Legion in Spain District North gives details.

The tribute to the fallen is held on the nearest Sunday to Armistice Day which signalled the end of the Great War at 11am on the 11th November, 1918 – now remembered as the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Boxes of poppies have already been distributed to businesses in the area – the scarlet flower became the symbol of the Legion and those who gave their lives in conflicts around the globe.

The Legion hopes people will take a poppy, leave a donation, and where it with pride to help support the charity’s ongoing welfare work. An average of £200,000 a day is spent by the Legion to assist Armed Forces personnel and their families and donations aid those who dedicated their lives serving their country.

For over 90 years the Poppy Factory in Richmond Surrey has been making poppies, crosses, and wreaths, for the royal Family and the annual Poppy Appeal.

And people needing help can contact the Welfare Co-ordinator for the Legion’s Spain district North can be contacted on 676 451 780.

OUR OFFICE is handling many claims against Bankia, demanding the return of money investment in their IPO (OPS), which took place on 19th July 2011, claiming for the annulment of the shares purchase, because information provided by Bankia to the investors in their prospectus, advertising, projected image, etc. was not in line with the reality of the entity’s financial state.

As explained in previous articles, we recommend people who have invested significant amounts to claim against Bankia, and we are providing them with facilities to do so.

However, there are many small investors who invested less than 2,000€ in shares of Bankia. They may fear that if they lose the case against Bankia they could up end paying lawyer fees and Bankia’s costs, thus risking an important sum of money to try to recover a relatively small investment.

These small investors should be aware that the Spanish Civil Procedure Law (LEC), Articles 23 and 31 have said that it will not be compulsory to use a lawyer and procurator in court claims for 2,000€ or less. Furthermore, Article 32.5 of the LEC, said that if it is not mandatory to be represented by a lawyer and procurator, then those asked to pay the cost of the court case would have the costs of these professionals excluded.

This means that if you claim for 2,000€ or less against Bankia, even in the unlikely event that you lose the court case, you will not be asked to pay Bankia’s expenses.

THAT IS the question I am asking with regards to the pension reforms that are allowing people to take their pension pots early.

Treat 1 - Yes the government have come knocking on the door of their voting public offering them huge sums of (their own) money from pension pots built up over a working lifetime to help stimulate the economy now – even suggesting that you may be at long last be able go out and afford that Ferrari you always dreamed of.

Treat 2 – Fantastic succession possibilities now available (if set up correctly) – pension pots still in existence shouldn’t disappear on death along with the annuity and the even tax free payments from fund depending on age at death can be passed on to families.

Trick 1 – Huge tax bills may be due with any of the pension money taken over and above the Tax Free Lump sum of 25% of the fund. This could be taxed at 40% or 45% as all the cash taken is classed as earned income. A huge income injection for the government.

Trick 2 – For people with large pension pots of £1million+ there is the Lifetime allowance reduction that could mean a further tax required to be paid of 55% - a massive tax income for the government that seems to have had little publicity.

Trick 3 – What is going to happen in the future – If people are using the income designed for retirement earlier what about income levels later in life?

Trick 4 – Ex Pats Spain – This is very tricky as people will fall in between the tax rules that apply in Spain and the guidelines and rules set in stone by the HMRC. There is legislation set especially for QROPS (Qualified Overseas Pension Schemes) but it is very important that advice is taken from a Qualified Financial Adviser.

There are few more treats but many more tricks that have popped up with the new legislation but there is no need to feel scared!

TAX forum in Alicante

ON TUESDAY 27th October, the XIII SUMA Forum was opened to address developments on taxation and transparency. The president of the Delegation of Alicante opened the meeting that brought together more than 250 technical and policy makers from across Spain.

The President of the Delegation of Alicante, César Sánchez, inaugurated the forum at 9am with this conference, that’s organized by the tax agency of the provincial institution, to be attended by more than 250 technical and policy makers from different local tax management representatives and councils, especially from Alicante, management bodies and officials from other provinces. During the meeting they addressed, among other issues, reform of the Laws on Real Estate and fiscal measures impacting the IBI, platforms of mediation between the State and local authorities and the reform of the Mortgage Law. Also, the application and development of the Transparency Law will be analysed, plus Good Governance and Citizen Participation. The Valencian Tax agency also looked at company taxation of services and items of general interest, particularly in the telecommunications sector or the management of public services in the XXI century and its new paradigms.

The forum had among some of its speakers, the general director of the Cadastre, Belen Navarro, CEO of ICT of the General State Administration, Domingo Molina, the director general of the Registers and Notaries, Javier Gomez, and the Rector of the University of Alicante, Manuel Palomar. Prior to this forum, SUMA held a conference yesterday, Monday morning, with executives regarding public tax management agencies and with twenty councils and large municipalities in other provinces to address the role of these and other issues of common interest.

One of the greatest entrepreneurs on this plant is Oprah Winfrey.

In her lifetime, she has turned all of her passions into realities including a TV show, a book club, magazine, website and radio show. She truly believes that, “Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.”

Since I was raised on a farm in rural Ontario, Canada, I was brought up in an entrepreneurial environment.

My Grandfather use to tell me to ONLY do things that I was good at because “anything else would NOT make me unhappy.” It was a no-brainer for Grandpa because he loved being a dairy farmer and if there was a job he hated to do, he would outsource to a local labourer or professional who could do that work for him.

Life on the farm was never easy, but it was a life full of pride and passion.

However, times have changed and the variety of enterprises in the world has become endless. Once you do finally find an entrepreneurial endeavour that you desire to devote yourself too – will your passion be enough?

At a recent Costa Blanca Women Networking Brunch, I asked exactly this question to the women who were there to build better relationships. These are some of their answers…

KNOW YOUR PRODUCT OR SERVICE INTIMATELY Don’t get caught up on a question that ends in a blank stare! People want you to have confidence in yourself and if don’t show a profound knowledge of your product or service, your clients will think you are an idiot and their confidence, and their business/ money, will go out the door.

MAKE YOURSELF APPROACHABLE A pleasant smile and a good ear will go a long way to building trust and good relationships. Looking clean and tailored will make the best impression before you even open your mouth. Walk in the door with an air of confidence yet have a friendly swing to your gait. Say to yourself, over and over, “it’s all good”, and it will be!

FOLLOW THROUGH AND DO WHAT YOU SAY The best way to turn clients off is to promise the world and deliver nothing. If you make a promise for a quote, a phone call, an email, lunch – whatever, make sure you do it and with professionalism and class. You don’t want to be an event and hear people calling you a “Looser” behind your back and not following up will do just that!

BUILD ON YOUR SKILLS You may have more skills than you know you do.

Can you speak effectively or write concisely? Are you a good listener? Perhaps you have the gift of negotiating or the art of persuasion? These are all skills that fall under the heading of communications skills.

Perhaps you have a knack for researching and planning? If so, then you will be good at identifying and solving problems, forecasting and setting goals and developing strategies. These are all very important skills for an entrepreneur.

If you are a sensitive person, then your skills might fall under the heading of Human Relations. Do you enjoy motivating and counselling people? Then you will be great at representing people in situations where perceiving and conveying feelings are important.

Are details your thing? Then you might possess the skills of a leader. Teaching, coaching, delegating

responsibly, managing groups, initiating new ideas, managing conflicts, making decisions, promoting change – these skills all take leadership qualities.

ORPHAN ANNIE’S adoption by a New York billionaire is too much for the children’s home boss to take in – but provides a hilarious moment for audiences.

Footlights Theatre Group is presenting the Broadway musical in November and the orphanage superintendant Miss Hannigan is staggered the red-headed girl has hit the jackpot.

Giovanna Wallis plays the orphanage boss who admits: “I hate that Annie so much, you’d think I was her mother!”

And Giovanna is pictured (left) with Annie (Jade Gray) and Grace Farrell (Jackie Stafford) – with two other orphans played by Georgia Wood and Tahi Quesada eavesdropping under the desk.

Tickets are on sale for all four performances of Annie. The show opens at Alfaz del Pi on Friday 13th November and plays Rojales on Saturday 14th November.

After a week’s break, the cast returns to Calpe for shows on Wednesday and Thursday 25th and 26th November.

Tchaikovsky and the Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra

by keith nicol TORREVIEJA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, the OST, will perform at the International Auditorium tonight, Friday 30th October at 8.30pm.

The special concert will give the audience an opportunity to listen to the Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra, with their new concert as part of their subscription series for the 2015 season. On this occasion the OST stage a special performance of Tchaikovsky, playing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and Swan

Lake Suite.

Portuguese Pedro Ferreira, an excellent violinist who has performed as soloist in such countries as France, Holland, USA, etc will also be performing. The concert will be directed by Jose Francisco Sanchez. This concert concludes the special Season Ticket performances of the OST for 2015, with highlights being the full houses from all their previous concerts. Tickets, space permitting will be available at the Box Office window at the International Auditorium.

Torrevieja Tapas Time TODAY, FRIDAY 30th October is the deadline for anyone cafe or restaurant to participate in the XIII Tapas Trail, which will take place from Thursday to Sunday, between 19th and 29th November 2015.

Old School Disco with the Cucaracha Club

REMEMBER YOUR dance hall days? Remember the fun you had as a teenager dancing the night away at weekends, back in that age of innocence and bliss when maybe a peck on the cheek was all you’d expect after a night on the town?

On Thursday 19th November, it’s time to fling open the school gymnasium doors once again and get yourselves down to Reflections in San Luis Lakeside, Torrevieja, for a fun night of music, games, a bite to eat and the opportunity of making a fool of yourself on the dance floor at the Old School Disco.

The occasion is a fun, fundraising event from the guys at Siesta Productions, who have just finished filming the Cucaracha Club. Now in post-production, to promote the film they need to raise some more funding to produce media packs and send these off to different

film festivals around the world, looking towards having the Cucaracha Club distributed world wide.

There will be fun and games, prizes for the best dressed, food, drink and music that one and all will remember and yes, we’ll be playing requests. Spinning the discs, remember those little black vinyl things with a hole in the middle, will be yours truly, Keith Nicol, delving deep into my record collection from yesteryear and the database from TKO radio. WELL EVENTUALLY most readers had a fair share of wet days when it rained cats and dogs and water tables were raised considerably.

This can only be of benefit to gardeners that concentrate on accommodating as many interesting colourful and beneficial plants in their mini botanical gardens.

However those whose gardens are dedicated to giving previously stray cats and dogs a home may not have been so happy for wet weather means wet animals, often with muddy paws, preferring to find a way indoors or least into a dry covered terrace areas where there might be comfortable seat covers to sleep on while drying and discarding uncomfortable fleas and other vermin.

Luckily thoughtful cat and dog owners will have taken steps to accommodate such inconveniences of owning or caring for stray pets and ensuring that they don’t inconvenience those neighbours who are more interested in developing gardens into wild animal and bird reserves rather than menageries or zoological gardens housing exhibits that are coaxed into enjoying unnatural human comforts and food scraps and which, if over fed or under exercised, spend the rest of their lives getting over weight and enjoying long siestas in the sun or shade, depending on the temperature and the density and length if their fur or hair coats. For some this leads to chronic ill health in parallel with owners who take little exercise and enjoy unhealthy processed foods.

Over the years I have visited a good number of gardens given over to animals with a minimum of

plants as they had been flattened , dug up or killed by natural weed killers.

Unfortunately they are characterised by depending on only hardy plants that can withstand the pressure of passing animals and animals flattening them to use them as beds and vegetables only grown in wire covered raised beds to reduce the chance of seed beds being scratched over, young plants being dug up or any chance of claiming that resultant remaining vegetables being able to be described as naturally ecologically or organically grown.

Although a few dogs can find their way into adjacent gardens through holes in hedges or fences even fewer jump or fly to disturb pristine flower beds, recently sown or weeded vegetable beds, areas of raked stone chippings terraces and lawns. However cats do climb almost all obstacles to pass from garden to garden and soon become immune to the odour of cat off products. Fortunately they don’t have the habit at barking at hidden neighbours in a friendly or menacing way but their soft purring has enticed many reluctant gardeners to feed them and their friends when they appear, having heard of a new source of delicious food. After a few weeks if they distain the food initially offered they might be lucky enough to each have individual bowls with individually chosen gastronomic cat foods.

But that that is preferable to the wander lost cats left to their own devices except during summer holidays, festival weekends and the odd visit to water what is left of the garden. Unfortunately stray rarely well fed and

watered cats feast on frogs, newts, lizards, geckoes, birds and butterflies carefully attracted by garden features and perfumed plants designed to attract the dwindling wild life in the area to a natural haven. This can be very frustrating especially when their droppings have to be cleaned up for owners are unlikely to ring the bell carrying a plastic bag to clean up after their pets or fostered strays.

So three pleas to the owners of domesticated pets: Train them not to bark except at strangers, exercise them several times a day, feed and water them regularly, give them scratch boxes in your own gardens and a covered warm area in which to shelter in inclement weather. In that way keen and not so keen gardeners can live in harmony.

 PARIS HILTON got into her hotel elevator in Beijing last week but the doors jammed shut and the lift didn´t move. “Please get us out of here! Oh my God! It’s so hot! I can’t breathe!” she was heard bellowing. I, like most of us, have been stuck in a lift, and all you need do is wait patiently and the doors will re-open. Finally some guy bravely prised the doors open then Paris stepped out and stirred the gathering throngs with a rousing “You rescued us! Thank you so much! You saved our lives!” Drama Queen!

We should always find a space for Red Dwarf!

MILEY CYRUS is a young lady who´s likely to keep appearing here because of her very high skill at grabbing the attention of the world´s media. The latest is that she will get naked, and I mean elbuffski, live onstage, and her band will do the same, and to complete the set, the entire audience will be as they were born. Miley is totally confident the worlds press will run with the tits-n-bums side of the story, even although they all know it’s just a video shoot! All video shoot actors must to be vetoed and double vetoed!

RED DWARF became a hugely successful sci-fi sitcom that aired on BBC2 from ´88 -´93. Earlier this year the four lead actors of the show spoke of wanting to get together and produce what would be an 11th series, that has now come to pass, and filming has already begun.

It all came to light when Craig Charles, who plays Liverpudlian slob Lister in the show, announced in May this year that he´d decided to leave his role as philandering taxi driver Lloyd Mullaney in Coronation Street to dedicate his time to Red Dwarf.

The original cast of Rimmer (Chris Barrie), Lister (Craig C), Cat (Danny John-Jules), and Kryten (Robert Llewellyn) are all on board, with Danny John-Jules saying to Digital Spy “It’s like going back to the old school, four guys and loads of banter, that’s what we want!” We´ll definitely run with that Danny boy! Danny also gave us a show spoiler when he admitted “the Cat´s a virgin and he could be finding love in the new series, or at least he could be reproducing!” Pretty out there is that, but well in keeping with the unusual plotlines.

Talking about costume preparation Robert Llewellyn said how he and Cat have had their teeth and heads cast “I can’t tell you why we´ve had the casts done, but you’ll be very pleased when you see it!”

Totally out there this time!

Craig Charles had the final word in the Red Dwarf adventure story when he added “I felt like I owed it to my colleagues to join them in filming the new series and finding out what´s in store for Lister and the others.” Love you Craig!

The 11th series of Red Dwarf will go out on channel Dave next summer.

SEAN PENN and Madonna married in 1985, after just six months of knowing each other. Sadly they decided to divorce less than 4 years later and proceeded to spit fire at each other through various newspaper and magazine articles.

That was 26 years ago, and the latest is that Sean has attended a number of Madonna´s concerts on her Rebel Hearts Tour and went to the one last week in New York City, and rather romantically left her a letter that said how he finally appreciates her art.

I FIND it extremely interesting to hear that John Lyndon, Johnny Rotten of The Sex Pistols, front pager of all the underground press, should end up being interviewed by The Observer, and amazingly one of the subjects they talked about was pork chops! John confessed that he´s not eaten a pork chop since he was seven when he caught meningitis after eating one. He said “I can’t go near a pork chop, but I am partial to a slab of smoky bacon, nothing will keep me away!”

LAST SUNDAY Tom Cruise was at the Tiger Stadium , Louisiana watching the LSU Tigers v Florida Gators football game. Being smart he firstly hung out with the guys in the stands before joining sports director Joe Alleva in his private booth. Later, whilst making his way to the toilet, Tom got talking to a local sports reporter, and they kept on talking, even when they went inside the loo! When the story broke local fan Ross Dellenger tweeted “Just peed next to Tom Cruise!”

ITV2 ARE looking to commission a controversial new comedy show called Sniggaz! The show will be filmed with hidden cameras and will feature up and coming Black and Asian comics pranking members of the public by getting them to talk about prejudices most people are too afraid to discuss.

Renowned Films are to produce a 30 minute pilot and co-founder Duane Jones said: ‘We’re thrilled to be working with ITV2 to unleash our brand new comedy show!” Unleash?

Step dad problems MY MUM remarried when I was 11. I never liked my step-dad. I am 13 now, and I keep the peace for my Mum’s sake. He knows how I feel I think, but has never said anything to me. He seems sad about this. I guess they seem happy enough, and he does look after her, and he tries really hard to be nice to me. I suppose I have never got over my parents divorce.

Will I ever feel differently?

You are young yet, and as you mature you may find your feelings change towards your step dad. As children, adult relationships are not easy to comprehend.

But, when we become adults ourselves, we have more understanding, and you will come to realise that sometimes sad things happen in life. Unfortunately some marriages fail. You have acknowledged that your step dad makes your Mum happy, so be grateful for that.

Perhaps you can think about taking the grown up approach now, and make the effort to get along. You will feel much better for it, I promise.

Unconventional relationship

WHEN MY daughter was 19, she met a man of 40, quickly moved in with him, and had a child. The relationship does not appear to be a loving partnership at all. She runs him to the pub every night, and picks him up at closing time. He refuses to see her family - we’ve only met him once in four years, despite us extending many invitations.

We see plenty of her, and our grandson, and she insists she is happy, but we are worried.

This is a sad situation for you. It is not a normal relationship, but if your daughter says she is happy and appears to be content, and there is no sign of abuse, then there is not much to be done. You hoped for a conventional relationship for your daughter, but she hasn’t got one, and it is up to her to realise that. And perhaps she will - in time. She is still young. She may see the relationship for what it is eventually. In the meantime, just be there for her.

 A tryst between Venus and Mars means that a situation can become more open and it comes with a built in agreement that will bring things to a head much faster. Though much water has passed under the bridge it is hard to forgive at this stage and you won’t ever have to forget but the time has come to walk away from this with your head high.

Venus conjuncts with Mars and it may be quite hard to get your head around something that you disagree with in principle. That stubborn determination has taught you that, above all, you deserve and it is not wrong to stick to your guns over an issue that is pricking your conscience; for your sake and for all those dragged into this no win situation Mercury enters into Scorpio and it is easy to see that revenge is a dish best served cold. Though you are angry and have chosen to blame yourself for what happened it wasn’t anyone’s fault, and it would seem that the very best solution is out there and on the table now. Say a resounding “yes” to what can be saved for the better out of all this debacle.

Moon energy is pensive and just waiting for something to happen, but do get down to basics because time is of the essence and you have other fish to fry. If offence has been taken then now is the time to cut the cord and to break away by yourself because there was no malice or mal intention. Reap what you know you have already sown!

The Sun trines with Neptune at the start of the week and this illuminates a clear way forward that may be just what you were looking for. Neptune brings psychic energy just when it is needed and it helps you to see what you have been missing and what could be, if a little light is shed on the pathway to the achievements and promotion that you seek.

Venus occludes with planet Kora, which sets up a strong defence for you and what you believed was right. Somebody has tipped over the apple cart by being economical with the truth and this truth only hurts those who have had the intention to throw you off the track. Mercury enters bringing with it a true need to start a new system of communication. What you have said before hasn’t really sunk in to those who should be at all ears to listen to what you propose. Ask yourself if they can do any better, because though you will take the reigns this is a time that all concerned pull together or agree to finally pull apart.

Jupiter takes on Uranus and it would be wise to examine finances as expenditure takes a far bigger slice of the pie than was first expected. It is time that your money worked for you and not you for it, so take good advice and go for the best deal, as this will bring dividends to your door and help you most favourably through a temporary sticky patch.

It seems that you cannot win either way and just do not give up so readily. You feel as if others do not take you seriously, but your family plan would seem to benefit all, or you wouldn’t have thought of it! For those who do not think they should shoulder the burden be very assured that they will get their comeuppance quicker than they know it!

You have reached the crossroads and it is time to make a decision that is based on your own wants and needs. The constant giving to others may seem to make you happy, but when the tables are turned only those who really do respect and love you are there at your side. I have written much about how to contact Spirit; how they can and do help, and what’s the best way to ask for what you need. Effective contact is a matter of relaxing and being concise. Waffling and grovelling do not help either you or Spirit in anyway. Many messages are sent and received every day and a short message of asking or even a short prayer may be the way ahead. Your attitude and your faith will be tested. I can best explain it as when you first start driving a car and are conscious of the Police; looking directly at an officer is the sure way of getting stopped. However a driver with experience learns to ignore the boys in blue concentrating on their performance in driving. It is just the very same with Spirit, once you know that they have lived an Earthly life it is easier to relax in communication and when that happens you know that your message is going to be dealt with accordingly and with sympathy. Looking up to the skies when you talk to Spirit isn’t a humbling thing, it is just a geographical thing. The soul ascends after death carrying with it a set of our personal spiritual DNA. Those who survive the process to access the Spirit World are empowered to help, or they will know someone who can do the job. Ask for nothing and you will get nothing, but a direct request will always be dealt with. There is one thing that can stop the process and that is that what you ask for may not alter your dynamic pathway to your destiny. Granting you all that you desire may not include something that may change your truly deserved destiny and take you off course. Destiny is etched into the soul and it will continue to lead you onwards for all the livelong days of your life; but it is infinite and part of a spiritual blueprint that cannot be altered. Be very unafraid to ask for anything, but realise that if it is not a part of your destiny right now it will not be possible, or you may have to activate it another way. Be resourceful, definite and inspired and then Spirit can work things around for you. The end result will become your destiny and it will bring you all that you deserve.

Faith becomes a fuller part of what you will ask for. If you truly do believe then you may find you are being tested

by Spirit. They do this to make sure that you are really deserving and that you will do what you say to make it a part of your life. There will be sometimes the quickest of decisions if something is imminent and has to fit into your schedule of destiny. Often there will be time for Spirit to intercede with fate to bring about the depth of your needs coupled with any changes they have to make to work together with you for the right result. See yourself as part of a team that is going to win, and remember that Spirit want to support you and they will do, come what may, even if that means holding back on something best not given to you just yet; or finding that way ahead that brings you the means of getting closer to your innermost desires.

Do not forget that Spirit loves you. If things didn’t quite work out for you then work with that destiny. You do not have to compromise, but maybe you can see things another way or go in another direction. Find the clues to your destiny and then work within to bring abundance and all that you deserve.......and never give up!

AS A little girl I was always told that the departed were in Heaven. What has changed to make you call it the Spirit World, and does this mean that my relations passed over are not there? Margie J. Good questions Margie. Firstly I see the Spirit World as being the holding station for those who have passed over after their last life here on Earth. Within this holding station there could be a section called Heaven. I do not refer to this because it is correct not to do so. In this way I do not cause offence to non Christians who may have other distinct names for their specific places of rest after life. My readers and clients are from all the major World religions and I deeply respect their faiths. I have never therefore ever used the word Spirit World as a name for what you choose to call Heaven.

Running slow

HELLO AUNTY. I have inherited a computer with Windows XP and think it just needs a good clean up. It’s a few years old so not worth spending money on software but it is really slow and isn’t showing much free space even though I have deleted loads of files etc. so can you please take me through the steps of what to download and in what order to run cleaner programmes.

Many thanks. Your advice is brilliant. Sandra Aunty says: To free up space on the PC, you need to go into “Control Panel”, and then into “Programs”. Look at all the installed programs, decide which you no longer want, and then uninstall the unwanted programs - taking care you do not install critical system programs.

This will free up space on your hard drive, but speed on a PC can be down to a number of other things. You may not have enough free memory to run programs, or you may be running too many programs at once, and your PC may not be powerful enough to do that.

Also, many modern programs, including anti-virus programs, are designed for modern day PCs so the programs are more complex and need more powerful processors.

There is, however, a small program called CCleaner, which can help remove some unwanted files from your PC and may help speed up the PC... but, be warned, it plays with the internal files of the PC, and, if it encounters problems, may cause further problems with the PC. (Back up onto an external drive any important files you wish to keep before running such programs!)

Download failed

HELLO AUNTY. On my windows update page it is showing Windows 10 has failed to download and error message 80240020. I cannot find out what this means or any way to now get Windows 10. Can you help please? Thank you, Keith Aunty says: This error means your Windows 10 installation folder is unfinished and/or corrupted. To fix this, you need to locate and delete the downloaded files, and then start the download again.

1. Go into “C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download” and delete everything in that folder.

2. Next, run the command prompt as an administrator. Type in “wuauclt.exe / updatenow”.

3. Go to your Control Panel > Windows Update and your Windows 10 should start re-downloading from scratch, hopefully without flaws this time

Will updating help?

HI AUNTY, I have been having problems with Vista at times, having to reboot it, freezing etc. Do you think updating it to 7 will help? When I bought it, there was an option to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. Also, what will happen to files such as tune up, viper and other files like music, vlc player etc? Advice please.

Steve, Benidorm Aunty says: Sometime it is possible to upgrade without affecting any personal “my documents” files - but it is always advisable to back these up on an external drive before you upgrade. In most cases the upgrade will not transfer the programs that you have installed like “tune up”, and you may need to install a new version for your new version of Windows.

Carrot and pumpkin soup YOU CAN tell it’s autumn when the pumpkins arrive in the markets.

This cheerful, warming soup is so bright that you’ll need to wear your sunglasses when you eat it!

Roast all the ingredients first, which really intensifies their flavour and gives the soup a natural sweetness.

• 500g fresh pumpkin • 300g medium carrots • A medium onion • Olive oil • Salt and black pepper • 300ml hot chicken or vegetable stock • Thick cream (optional)

• Shredded orange peel (optional)

1. Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees C. 2. Cut the pumpkin into 2.5cm wedges, removing the seeds but leaving the skin in tact.

Peel the carrots and cut in half lengthways.

Peel the onion and cut into wedges. Place the vegetables in a medium sized roasting tin and drizzle with a good slug of olive oil. Get your hands in and swirl everything around so all the vegetables have an even coating of oil. Adjust the pumpkin wedges so that only the skin is in contact with the bottom of the pan. Season generously with salt and pepper then place in the oven for 35 – 45 minutes until the vegetables are soft and begin to blacken at the edges.

3. Remove the vegetables from

the oven and, when the pumpkin wedges are cool enough to handle, peel away the skin and discard.

Next you need to liquidize everything using a food processor or a hand held blender. To do this, place all the roasted ingredients together with the hot stock and whiz until smooth. Add a little more stock if the soup seems too thick and pass through a fine sieve if you want a smoother texture 4. Pour the soup into a pan and reheat when ready to serve. Finish the soup with a blob of thick cream and a few shreds of orange rind.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Uses of “gustar” We’ve spent quite a long time talking about reflexive verbs.

So I’m now going to leave the subject alone for a while and briefly look at something that a lot of people tend to confuse with reflexives. This is the particular Spanish way expressing likes, loves and dislikes by saying that something “pleases”, “delights” or “displeases”.

For example, you are probably be very familiar with the form “me gusta” and know that it means “I like”. “Gusta” is the third person singular form of the verb “gustar” to please – therefore the literal translation of “me gusta” is “it pleases me” or “he pleases me” or “she pleases me”. In other words, I like it, him or her.

This form is not reflexive, because it has nothing to do with anyone pleasing themselves. I suppose someone some time may want to say “me gusto” (I

please myself – that is, I like myself) but this is not really what we’re talking about or would normally wish to say.

The form “me gusta” is simply a different way round from English of conveying a certain idea. The same thing happens with “me encanta” (literally – It delights me – I love it). Also included in this group of verbs are things like “me sorprende” (it surprises me), “me fastidia” (it annoys me), “me interesa” (it interests me) and so on.

To change the person who is pleased, or who likes, we do not conjugate these verbs in the usual way.

This is how we change “gustar”.

Me gusta - I like (it pleases me) Te gusta - You like it (it pleases you) Le gusta - He/she likes it (it pleases him/her) Nos gusta - We like it (it pleases us)

Os gusta - You like it (plural) (it pleases you “lot”) Les gusta - They like it (it pleases them).

Notice that the object pronouns (they are actually indirect object pronouns, for those who wish to know) happen to be the same as the reflexive pronouns EXCEPT in the third person (“le” and “les” NOT “se”).

If more than one thing pleases us, then the verb changes to a plural. For example: “Me gustan las patatas fritas” (I like chips - they please me, the chips!)

Actually “me encantan las patatas fritas” (chips delight me) and I’m feeling rather peckish so I think I’ll stop here and go and eat a big plate of them! I haven’t done this for a while, but if anyone would like to e-mail me their queries on this subject, I will try to answer them either directly or in the next article – I mean verbs, not chips.

El Plantio 2 Golf Society THERE WAS a reasonable turn out this week for the monthly medal, with the weather cooler but dry. All started well but as usual the pressure got the better of a few people. The 3rd and 7th took their usual toll on some individuals’ scores.

Next week is Martin Rickman’s final week as Captain so the society will be holding the Captain v Vice-Captain competition, in Matchplay format.

Carmen Morate, the Councillor in charge of Animal Welfare informed the event organisers GM Promotions that the veterinarian service in the dog pound is not up to standard and that they require more volunteers to clean the cages for the cats and to walk the dogs. They are also in need of people willing to foster old, very young or sick dogs as well as adopt a pet. You’ll also have your chance to adopt a forever pet, on the day. Carmen is looking forward to the Town Meets Country Event, to let more people know of the existence of this dog pound and of the many beautiful, but sad and lonely, dogs and cats, just waiting to be taken to their forever homes and receive the love they deserve.

More than 7,500 people have a flu jab during the first week of campaigning

Torrevieja’s Mayor has a job to do, so he’s already had his flu jab

THE MINISTRY of Health has allocated 30,700 doses of the flu vaccine for Health Department Torrevieja, based upon the area’s population. The Health Department began it’s winter campaign on Monday against the seasonal flu strains of 2015, and this week so far, 7,757 people have already been vaccinated during this first week.

Citizens have several different locations where they can go for the flu vaccination among the city’s health centres and clinics.

The Influenza vaccination is primarily given to adults of 60 years and older and for people of specific risk groups, such as pregnant women or those who are chronically ill. It is a public health measure to reduce morbidity and mortality and avoid a high number of hospitalizations for possible complications from the flu.

The groups seen to be at the most risk and that should have the inoculation of the vaccine are: all persons aged 60 or more, especially those who live in closed institutions; people under 60 who, because of their special clinical condition are at high risk of complications from the flu or developing the disease because it may cause an imbalance of their medical condition; people who can transmit influenza to those who run a high risk of complications; people working in essential public services, with special emphasis on the forces and state security bodies, with national, state or local agency, firefighters, civil protection services, people who work in emergency services and health workers in prisons and other detention centres. Seasonal influenza, what is it? The flu spreads from person to person through respiratory secretions. The transferability period extends from 24-48 hours before the onset of symptoms 5 to 6 days later. The incubation period is 1-5 days. Annual vaccination is the main preventive measure against influenza, bit there is still the need to be vaccinated every year because the strains that make up the vaccine change from one season to the next. The effectiveness of the vaccine is approximately 80%. The main objective of the vaccination campaigns is to protect risk groups in which the disease is potentially serious because of its complications.

Influenza is an acute infectious disease of the airways caused by a virus, which causes between 10% to 20% of all respiratory diseases. It’s noted for its high capacity of transmission from person to person through the air and usually occurs in winter, with peak incidence between the 2nd and the 5th week in the form of an epidemic. Influenza is associated with increased hospitalization and deaths. The affected in each epidemic population is between 5 and 20% and vaccination is the most effective method to prevent infection and its complications. According to scientific evidence, the high coverage of influenza vaccination is linked to a reduction in hospitalizations for pneumonia 27% and the flu.

Listening and caring

by Jack Troughton A MEMBER of ‘Stepping Stones’, the bereavement and loss group run by charity The Listeners, shared a part of Henri JM Nouwen’s book ‘Out of Solitude’ at a meeting.

He believed the words were an accurate description of the Listeners, its 24 helpline, and Stepping Stones, for the empathy and sympathetic understanding of the associations.

And he read from the book: “When we honestly ask ourselves which persons in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand.

“The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing or not healing, but face with us the reality of our powerlessness. That is a person who cares”.

An update on Spanish Affairs

FOR MORE years than she may care to remember, Jane Cronin has been helping educate the vast majority of us with her weekly Spanish lessons within the pages of the RTN. Last Monday she wore a different hat as she took the stage at the U3A, in front of an audience approaching 300 people, to give her insight into what’s happening in Spain today, with her talk on ‘An Update on Spanish Affairs’.

Before the normal meeting of the U3A, which normally takes place on the last Monday of the month, everyone was somewhat surprised with the arrival of the

Mayor, Jose Manuel Dolon, who came to see for himself Torrevieja’s largest and most successful International club and said a few words in English to the assembly, before promising to return at a later date and be able to speak a little more English. Also taking pride and place in the front row of the audience were the Councillor for NGOs, Carmen Morate and Councillor for the Third Age, Domingo Pérez.

If you are interested in joining Torrevieja U3A, and you would be very welcome, why not attend one of their monthly general meetings as a visitor, where you will be greeted and introduced to the Association.

Their monthly meetings are held at The CMO Building on the road behind the Carrefour Super Store, Torrevieja and usually held on the last Monday of the month.

Los Infiernos Dog Rescue Centre sponsored skydive ON THE 11th October, at the Skydive Murcia centre in Ontur near Hellin, nine volunteers bravely completed a freefall skydive from 3,500m to raise over 4,000€ through sponsorship for the Los Infiernos Perrera.

This is a small dog refuge located in the municipality of Torre Pacheco not far from San Javier Airport and all the money donated will be used to care for the dogs.

For their generous help the group would like to thank all of the sponsors including Em’s Bar in Sucina, La Casa Familiar in Estrella de Mar (Los Urrutias), New Yorks Bar on Urb. Lo Santiago, Paddy’s Point in La Zenia and also the Spangles chorus group from Los Alcázares.

Unsurprisingly, there is a continual flow of dogs and the refuge works hard to find suitable homes for all of them in Spain and across the rest of Europe. However, until each dog leaves, the costs associated with its feeding, medication and veterinary treatment are high, so additional funds are always very welcome.

Thumbs up for Huntington’s Disease charity lunch

by PATRICIA THOMPSON A VERY successful charity lunch was held on Thursday 22nd October in aid of The Huntington’s Disease Association.

Residents and friends of Almoradi joined organisers Margaret Tozer and her sister Marion Smith, whose husband David suffers from HD, at popular “Restaurante Giovanni”

for a 3 course lunch, raising an amazing 553€ for research into this hereditary disease, and having a whole lot of fun in the process.

Restaurant owner “John” and his staff generously gave up their time, as well as donating all the prizes awarded during the afternoon.

This is the 3rd fundraising event held this year, bringing the total raised to a magnificent 1,570€ towards this great cause.

ADAPTing to Spanish law THE ASSOCIATION of English speakers (ADAPT) of San Pedro del Pinatar recently acted as coordinator for the N332 presentation given

by Francisco Morales, a Guardia Civil Traffic Officer, to help English speakers understand traffic laws in Spain and to give guidance on road safety, vehicle registration and much more.

Francisco, together with Mark Nolan of the N332 website, gave an excellent presentation to an audience of ADAPT members, members of other associations and members of the public at the San Pedro Casa de Cultura on Wednesday 21st October.

Covering a wide range of traffic law issues, the presentation was highly informative, up-to-date and, more importantly, the information given was from an authoritative source.

The presentation pictures, graphics and content were highly professional and combined with speaker knowledge and emphasis on the subjects, it made for a very well received set of messages on road safety and Spanish traffic laws. The audience left the presentation clearly far better informed than when they arrived and they will hopefully pass on the upto-date and accurate information.

Musical Mystery Tour raises funds for under-privileged children THE SHOW, by the new Cardenal Belluga Theatre Group, ran on the Thursday15th and Friday 16th October 2015,with most of the seats full. On both nights the show was a great success, and on Friday was attended by the Mayor and local councillors.

After the show on Thursday, the Hope Christian Fellowship Church, run by Pastor Bryan, presented the group with a cheque for 500€ for the San Fulgencio School book fund which helps under-privileged children at the school to borrow books from the newly introduced library. On the following Thursday, Tom Ford from the group, together with councillor Polino, visited the San Fulgencio School to hand over a cheque for a total of 1,500€ for the books. They found that there is also a group of children at the school who would like to be involved in the theatre group, so it was suggested that they attend one of the group’s rehearsals to see what they do. The group now has DVDs of the show, so if you would like to purchase one contact Tom Ford telephone 966 79 05 47. The proceeds will go towards costumes and sound equipment for the group’s next show around June of next year. They are still looking for new members, including technical people for lighting, sound, and stage, so if you are interested contact them.

SAMM gives, and SAMM receives SAMM (THE Sailing Association Mar Menor) usually hits the headlines for its own charity work, as evidenced by the recent, “Día de Caldero” an annual ‘fiesta’ held on the beaches of Los Alcázares and greatly enjoyed by the Spanish and ex-pat residents alike. For the last few years SAMM has participated, and this year, when the event took place on October 12th, was no exception.

Early that morning, willing volunteers erected the SAMM marquee and, during the day, at least 100 members of SAMM, many dressed as “Pirates”’, arrived to enjoy the celebrations. Drinks were provided by the SAMM Social Committee free of charge and SAMM member Nilam Wright provided a delicious curry for those who wanted a hot dish while other members cooked their own food on the BBQ’s provided.

During the day Raquel Peña, the President of AMMA (Association Mar Menor Alzheimers) was presented with a cheque for 1,255€ raised by the SAMM Charity race in held in June.

However, charity also begins at home, and the current SAMM support boat, a Valiant 450DR Rib, which was purchased, second hand, in 2011 and has given sterling support to the SAMM race programmes and many of the SAMM groups since then, is coming to the end of its useful life. The SAMM committee has decided that the time has now come to invest in a replacement. The Mar Menor is a beautiful place to sail but because the water is very salty and warmer than the open sea it is a harsh environment for boats and their engines, especially Ribs. It was thought that a better solution to another Rib would be a roto-moulded, polyethylene vessel. Considerable research was carried out into various craft by the race group chairman who identified five models and obtained prices for the committee to consider.

After considerable discussion it was decided that the Whaly 435R best suited the requirements and budget and was available from a local dealer in Cabo de Palos. The proposal, with a finance plan for both the boat and a new engine at a later date, was put to the members at the October general meeting and approved by an overwhelming majority.

One of the existing 40hp engines SAMM has for the Rib will be used on the Whaly until the funds for a new engine are available.

Citroen DS3 Cabrio

A FIVE seat cabriolet with an electronic folding hood that can be operated at speeds of up to 75mph: the key benefit of the Citroen DS3 Cabrio.

IT IS the only convertible in its class to accommodate so many passengers and to be equipped with a 245 litre boot and split folding rear seat, making it probably

the most versatile convertible on Spain’s roads today.

That boot initially looks tiddly but after the lid is lifted it is large enough for a standard pushchair (with the rear wheels removed and packed separately in the boot), which I must say surprises me.

As I sit inside the top-of-the-range 155bhp model I recall testing a Lexus IS250C luxury convertible. I was at the traffic lights when the sun decided to come out and I pressed the button for the roof to go down. Almost instantaneously the lights went to green and I had to get moving. As soon as the car moved the roof stopped going down and so I was driving with it half up and with part of the boot lid still open. I pulled over as soon as it was safe to do so; a ridiculous situation to be in and unsafe.

Thank goodness there is finally a convertible that is well suited to the British weather and to impatient motorists like me. Because the roof does not fold back into the boot but above the rear window, it makes it more practical all round, which is why the roof can be operated at speeds of up to 75mph.

The DS3’s high quality canvas roof compliments the bodywork and to the unknowing it appears to be simply a hot hatch but we know otherwise. On first acquaintance the vehicle looks just like the DS3 coupe. My test takes place in the middle of winter with lashing rain and much to my wife’s distaste I have to experience driving with the roof down.

Controlled by a button on the overhead console, the hood opens and closes in just 16 seconds flat, which is just as well because when the weather gets too unbearable that roof just has to go up. It’s just as well that it is fitted with a hardwearing interior that features leather seats and much plastic, which copes with excess rainwater well. Not what ‘‘The Doctor’’ ordered!

by ALAN PALMER MotoGP was concluding it’s Cook’s Tour of the Far East at the fantastic Sepang circuit in Malaysia.

This is one of only four tracks which MotoGP shares with F1, the others being this weekends´ Circuit of the Americas, here in Barcelona/Catalunya, and our own Silverstone in Northamptonshire. These circuits tend to be more exciting for the bikes because of the more open nature they have to exhibit to accommodate the four wheeled fraternity, so it makes for some fabulous racing on two wheels, and this was no exception.

Finishing an excellent Asian excursion, winner in Japan and fifth in Australia last week, Dani Pedrosa ( Repsol Honda ) blasted off the line, and that was that. Job done, he won by 3.6 seconds from Jorge Lorenzo ( Yamaha ), and has now won 3 of the last 4 MotoGPs in Malaysia. A little further back, Championship leader Valentino Rossi, on the other

works Yamaha and sixth on the grid, got into a dice with Pole sitter Marc Marquez on the other Honda, and things started to get silly.

Motor sport fans will remember that last week, in Australia, these two were involved in an epic battle with the Ducatti of Andrea Iannone for third place in the gull affected GP. This week Rossi accused Marquez of trying to help his fellow countryman Jorge Lorenzo close the gap on him for the Championship, despite the fact that Marc went on to beat Jorge last week, so when they got together battling for third, sparks began to fly. Swapping places, perfectly legally, on virtually every turn Rossi became convinced that, once again, Marquez was trying to hold him up. Eventually Latin temperament overcame professional discretion, and on the sixth lap, going into Turn 14, with Rossi inside Marquez, he ran wide and forced the Honda rider to the edge of the track. Replays

are not conclusive, some say he kicked the other bike, but there is no doubt he made a twitch that caused Marquez to lose his bike and crash, whilst Rossi rode on to finish third.

The stewards held an enquiry after the race, at which Rossi admitted running wide deliberately, but insisted he did not mean Marquez to crash. Unbelievably the Race Direction partly accepted his view that Marquez was trying to interfere with his race, and only awarded a penalty of three points on his licence, which combined with one earned earlier in the season, means he starts from the back of the grid in two weeks time here at Cheste, in Valencia for the seasons finale, and one has to say, screws his chances of the title.

Lorenzo needs eight points to beat Rossi for the World Championship, and if he starts on the front row, and ‘ The Doctor ‘ starts on the back row, this should be a race well worth watching. Don´t miss it.

Walking Wonderers Pego Golf Society “Committee Plate” Medal Competition

THIS WEEK The Playa Flamenca Walking Football Team, Walking Wonderers, celebrated their first anniversary with a tour to Benidorm.

During this anniversary week two players, Glynn Dale, and Mike Dundridge, shared their 70th Birthdays.

The tour was a great success ,with also a penalty shoot out with the Waggs, the club’s very own touring wives, a fancy dress competition, and other social events, held during the tour.

Another visit to Benidorm is being planned and this very social group has already organised a cruise for 2016.

On Tuesday, Pego Golf Society’s members played for one of their “Major” competitions, the “Committee Plate”.

There were five guests, Chris Andersen, Denise Cooper, Richard Morris, John Snelling and his wife Susie Snelling. The winner of the guest prize was Chris Andersen, with a net score of 79 playing off 7.

The course at Oliva Nova was not in good condition after the recent rain, and the new, re-seeded, grass on the fairways was long and limp, so balls on the fairway fell down to the roots of the new grass.

In the main competition, the results were as follows:Ist Place: Terry Oram with 68 playing off 18.5, 2nd Place: Brendan Young with 71 playing off 16.3, 3rd Place: Shaun O’Gorman with 71 playing off 4.4, 4th Place: Andrew Harrison with 72 playing off 12, 5th Place: Nigel Siddall with 73 playing off 11.6, 6th Place: Colin Foster with 74 playing off 9.8 Nearest the Pin at Hole No 5 with the second shot was Brendan Young at 1.30 metres, and at hole number 16 the closest to the hole was John Nicol, who had a hole in one. All in all, a great day’s golf.

CD Torrevieja 0 - 1 CD Castellon AS TEMPTING as it was to roll out the same match report as last week, writer’s honesty got the better of me.

The facts, however, are identical even if the result was different. CD Torrevieja outplayed CD Castellon for the entire match and once again their inability to turn endeavour, possession and even the occasional chance into goals came back to bite them on the proverbial losing bottom.

Manager Pedreno feels as if he is getting closer to a preferred eleven, and who can blame him after 11 fixtures. That is likely to change next weekend at Levante, with Rafa Gomez unlikely to remain a substitute for much longer and the talent of Ruben Suarez craved by everyone. Pedreno made just the one change from the draw with Elche, the tall, elegant Javi Selvas handed a debut alongside Jorge at the back. Quintero, following his man of the match display a week ago, remained in the defensive midfield berth.

The first half, to the untrained eye, looked like a spell of Torrevieja dominance and many felt they were unlucky to be behind at the interval. However, Castellon were executing a clear game plan. Their back four was dropping to a certain point and inviting Torrevieja to find a way in behind them, which they were unable to do. Each Torrevieja half chance was a shot that had defenders in front of the ball, showing that for all their neat and tidy possession they were not hurting their opponents. Juanma had is obligatory cut inside and shoot moment, but his shot from distance was palmed away to safety.

Once in a while Castellon decided to venture forwards, attempting to hit Torrevieja on the break. They only needed to do this twice in the first period to get what they came for. The

first quick counter ended with Selvas making a fine block on the goal-line with Oscar beaten, the second led to the eventual winning goal.

Luis Carlos was caught up field supporting an attack which broke down. Mareyna drifted into the hole created and went up against Jorge one on one. A fortunate bounce of the ball took him round the Torrevieja captain and he drilled the ball into the far right hand corner of the goal. With just moments until half time it was a killer blow.

Rafa Gomez was introduced for Brani at half time, the young Croat unable to influence the game. The second half was a mirror image of the first, Torrevieja again invited to take the game to Castellon and again unable to break down a stubborn, well drilled back line. Half chances came and went, with nothing clear cut.

With about fifteen minutes to go, having spent a large portion of the game hitting long high balls in the direction of the diminutive Cesar and Carrasco, Pedreno ordered Jorge up front to lead the line. It was refreshing to see that the “stick the centre half up top” tactic was alive and well in the lower divisions in Spain. However, this signalled the end of any long, high balls into the front line, meaning Jorge was left to wonder why he had moved forward. Torrevieja had two minor penalty appeals, the kind that would have left you furious if they had been given against you and bar a Javi Selvas header from a corner that went wide by millimetres the men in white never truly looked like finding the equalising goal. The defeat leaves Torrevieja in 14th place and next week they travel to CF Levante, currently sitting in 4th. Ten points from eleven games with ten goals scored tells its own story.

Imanyo Golf Society Ralph Cup Competition THE FIRST ever Ralph Cup Competition nearly didn’t take place as the weather forecast was “rain all day”, but, in the event, the forecasters got it wrong, and the rain stopped just in time, although the course was “too boggy for buggies” which meant quite a lot of walking!

The format was pairs full handicap stableford with a blind draw for four holes for double points.

The winners of the” Keep It In The Family” Ralph Cup were the Scottish pairing of Alan Rodger and Graeme Forrest with 67 points, runners up were Alan Byrne and Graham Rumsey with 60 points, and “Best Single Score” was Ian Chetwynd with 42 points with doubles included and 35 without. The Endeavour Award went to Harry Goldsmith. Only three “Nearest The Pins” were won; hole 9 Dave Goldsmith, hole 14 Chris Baillie and hole 18 Alan Rodger.

The presentation was held at Imanyo’s and was followed by the usual good food and drink, and the society’s thanks go to Antonio, Norma and all the staff for looking after them once again. The football card was won by Donald Main (Birmingham City) who promptly donated the winnings to the society´s Parkinson’s charity.

Where’s the Party?

Lewis Hamilton duly won the American Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas In Austin, Texas, and with it his third World Championship.

by ALAN PALMER Despite a lady named Patricia trying to rain on his parade, Lewis attacked the job with his usual determination, and managed to totally upset his team “mate” Nico Rosberg into the bargain.

The lady in question was, in fact, the tropical storm named Patricia, which had just hit Mexico, but Texas caught the periphery of it, and at 1pm on Saturday, when qualifying was due to start, the rain was coming down in what we call stair-rods in the East Midlands, and Austin, judging from the television pictures, was darker than Benidorm at 8 in the evening. Qualifying had to be postponed to Sunday morning, and was again abandoned after the first two sessions due to further rain, so Rosberg´s Mercedes started on Pole, with Hamilton second, The Red Bulls of Ricciardo and Kvyat next up followed by the Force India cars of Perez and Hulkenberg having another excellent weekend. The Ferraris of Vettel and Raikonnen qualified 5th and 8th, but copped a 10 place grid penalty for using too many engines this season!

Pole position is on the outside at the COTA, and Lewis does not need a written invitation to dive down, or in this case up, the inside going into a corner. Ever since his days in Formula 3000/ GP2 he has been known for his forceful overtaking, and Sunday was no exception, getting alongside Rosberg on the uphill approach to Turn 1, and muscling his way past, forcing Rosberg wide, and allowing the Red Bulls to grab second and third. After his experience in Japan, when Lewis did exactly the same thing Nico should have seen that coming, but he had to fight to get back past the Red Bulls, running upgraded Renault engines, and running superbly on this wet track. He got up to second, but was overtaken by Dani Ricciardo who went on to take Lewis, and 1st place as the latter´s intermediate tyres went off on the rapidly drying track, at which point he pitted for slicks.

Behind the fun at the front the Saubers of Nasr and Ericsson were celebrating Sauber´s 400th GP by trying to take each other off. Nasr drove over his partner´s nose cone, Bottas and Grosjean ( Williams & Lotus ) tangled resulting in a new nose and puncture respectively, and the Ferraris had quietly sneaked up to 7th and 9th from their lowly grid positions.

The Safety Car had joined in the fun when Ericsson´s Sauber finally gave up the ghost on Lap 27, the same lap that Kimi retired his Ferrari following an earlier “off” into the advertising hoardings, from which he managed to escape, his years in international rallying obviously helping.

With 15 laps to go Lewis was leading, but Rosberg had taken the opportunity to change tyres during an earlier Virtual Safety Car period, and was closing fast. It was at that moment when Daniil Kvyat in the Red Bull lost it exiting Turn 19 and slammed head on into the barriers just before the pit entrance, bouncing back to come to rest on the opposite side of the track. The resultant Safety Car allowed Lewis to pit for fresh rubber, and he emerged just behind Nico and ready for a battle royal over the last ten laps.

As it happened the battle never took place as Nico ran wide on the next lap, letting Lewis through to cruise to his tenth victory of the season, so far, and his third World Championship, as Nico managed to hold off a rapidly closing Sebastian Vettel´s Ferrari, who, had he got second, would have pushed the Championship into next week.

Then the fun really began. Lewis was almost overcome thanking his team and family on the car radio, but justifiably ecstatic when he drove into the winners bay, nudging the number 1 sign with his nose, and climbing onto the car to accept the acclaim of the crowd, before hurling himself into the arms of his mechanics. In the pre-podium room upstairs he cheekily tossed the No2 cap to a surly looking Nico Rosberg, who promptly threw it back, and went onto the podium looking as if he was chewing a wasp. He refused to join in the champagne spraying, handing his bottle to Paddy Lowe, the Mercedes Technical Director, who had received the Constructor´s award, and looked as if he was leaving until he remembered the podium interviews, which, in this instance, were conducted by Sir Elton John. Rosberg later complained that Hamilton had been “ extremely aggressive” into Turn 1. What does he think he is
