Football success in Algorfa THE ALGORFA Town Hall held their 11th Sports Gala Presentation last Saturday and rewarded the achievements of the town’s sporting heroes. Cyclists, gymnasts, basketball and tennis players were all honoured. But the biggest cheers of the evening were saved for the town’s Municipal Football School, who have had their best season since they were inaugurated 15 years ago. The 2003 Pre-Benjamin team won their league and the 2002 Pre-Benjamin team got to the semi finals of their league. Meanwhile, the Benjamin A, Alevin A and Infantil teams all finished second in their respective leagues.

THE TRIAL of a couple charged with murdering a two-month-old baby girl started in Elche this week with the prosecution requesting a prison term of at least 19 years for each of the accused, aged just 19 and 21 years and living in Torrevieja at the time of their daughter’s death. The couple claimed the child died as a result of an accidental fall: initially Guardia officers released the pair in the belief that the baby had fallen victim to cot death but following an autopsy report, National Police later arrested them as they tried to cross the border into Gibraltar. Prosecutors told the jury that the couple “...failed to provide the child with the care that she needed and did not provide her with food necessary for her development and adequate medical care.” Autopsy revealed

the child, named as ‘Lucia’, showed sustained physical abuse as a result of being “beaten several times by the slapping of the head and face.” The child’s father, named as ‘Daryl W’, confessed to hitting the child’s mother, named as ‘Carla Marie D’, while drunk. Prosecutors allege that when the defendant finished hitting his partner, he attacked his baby daughter, causing fatal injuries. It was claimed that his partner had also hit the baby during her short life. The couple’s defence lawyer claims that the 23-yearold father suffers from a ‘personality disorder’ aggravated by the consumption of drugs and alcohol. The court heard that he had once been admitted to a psychiatric hospital in the UK and since being imprisoned here has received adequate medical treatment to alleviate his symptoms. continued on page 3
