DOMESTIC VIOLENCE victim Jacqueline Burrell believes her attacker has evaded justice after nearly killing her in a horrific attack. The glamorous Costa Blanca beautician said former boyfriend Simon Aurand went on the run soon after being found guilty of the serious 2009 assault at a Benidorm court. And despite being issued with a warrant for the fugitive’s arrest, police have failed to locate Aurand who is believed to have fled south from the Marina Alta to the Orihuela area. Jacqueline told RTN: “This is not a story of revenge. All I want is Spanish law to be put into place – I just want some justice.” She came to Spain three years ago to be closer to her parents who live in the village of Sagra, opened her business Bella Beauty, met 41-yearold Aurand and fell in love. “I did not know what he was like but I went through a lot of abuse, domestic violence,” the 47-year-old recalled. “Then in my parents home he nearly killed me, he attacked me. CHARM “The problem is you see it as your fault. In public he appeared a very charming character. People ask why do you stay with these men but the truth is they control you.” She said she was attacked on 9th

October 2009 in her parents’ home and in front of the pensioners – who tried but failed to protect her and were hurt in the attempt. “He tried to strangle me four times and threw me down onto the floor – I am lucky to be alive, my teeth were smashed on the tiles and two fingers were broken by him,” Jacqueline said, adding he also suffered injuries to her knee and shoulder blade. “He was sitting on me and spitting in my face. I was black and blue – I needed treatment in hospital and could hardly walk for days. My best friend came to see me and just burst into tears. “The injuries have healed now but there are mental scars inside, they take longer to heal. It is extremely exhausting and draining. I want to move on and get on with my life – I want him behind bars.” Jacqueline said her attacker was arrested by Guardia Civil officers and appeared in court at Denia on October 11th that year and before a judge in Benidorm on October 22nd. She said he faced four years in prison but after a plea bargain was ordered to pay her 4,000€ compensation, as well as barred from contacting her, going near her home and also to attend anger management courses. 3 Continued on page
