Demand for justice by Jack Troughton ANGRY COUPLE Andrew and Kate Wilford are demanding the Spanish government take action after their plan for early retirement was shattered in an alleged property scam. They have written to President Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero asking what “an innocent victim” must do to obtain justice after losing some 300,000€ in an ‘off-plan’ property scandal they believe extends across the popular Spanish Costas. And in bid to overcome the seeming inertia, Andrew copied the letter to include UK Prime Minister David Cameron, The British Embassy in Madrid, campaigning MEP Michael Cashman, newspapers in the UK and Spain, and ITV’s Homes from Hell. The couple bought a Murcia home ‘off-plan’ with developers Trampolin Solera. But on completion in January 2008 discovered not only had the company – now in administration – taken out a “huge” builder’s mortgage on the property with CAM Bank, the home had been sold a second time to a third party. “I was absolutely shocked to find this appalling situation. I was paying 280,000€ for it, CAM Kate Wilford valued it at 397,000€ and had
agreed to pay this whacking great mortgage on it to the developer,” said Andrew. POCKET He accused the development company Trampolin Solera – and linked companies such as Trampolin Hills and Trampolin Royal Dreams – of being able to pocket a potential 100 million euros by mortgaging some of the property it built, while bankers had earned commissions based on inflated valuations. Speaking from his home in Colwyn Bay, Wales, Andrew told RTN: “I have been fighting and fighting to get this thing before the courts – if this was the UK the guys involved would be in prison. “I alerted the police and the government three years ago. What has happened with Trampolin is mirrored across the Costa Blanca, Murcia and the Costa del Sol. “We trusted the Spanish but I think corruption and fraud are running through the very veins of the country. The way they have treated people over property is deplorable – and sending ministers to the UK to try and sell property is disgusting.” Continued to page 3

Drugs seized in Pilar and two arrested
3
by Julie Day POLICE IN Pilar de la Horadada have seized 22 marihuana plants and 640 grams of hashish in two separate operations. In the first incident, a local police patrol gave chase to two men after observing them selling drugs in broad daylight in a busy street in Pilar de la Horadada’s town centre. The 32 year-old Maghrib native was arrested after the police seized 640 grams of prepared bags of hashish with a street value of 4,000€. The man is now awaiting trial at the Guardia Civil cells in Torre de la Horadada. In a separate incident, police responded to a call from a local farmer who had spotted poachers on his land. On inspection of the area, which is located close to the Lo Romero golf club, a greenhouse was discovered hid-

THE OSBORNE bull, iconic advertising symbol of Spain located on the slopes of Portichol in Monforte del Cid, reproduced on fridge magnets, key rings and car stickers by the million, has appeared painted half white! The paint job has been hastily organised to cover graffiti, also painted in white letters on the bull’s black background. El Toro has been visible to motorists in Spain since 1957, briefly disappearing when a law against billboards was introduced. In December 1997, the Supreme Court granted El Toro amnesty as a cultural and artistic mascot of Spain and now there are around 90 dotted all over Spain, seven in Alicante that are visible from the N332.

continued from front page In July Andrew and Kate were relieved to hear a magistrate in the Royal Palace of Justice in Murcia rule there was a criminal case to answer against the directors of the development company and CAM. However, they have no idea when the case will come to trial. “I did hope to have retired by now,” said Andrew. “But this affair has cost almost 300,000€. I am now aged 60 and I have had to kick-start my business again importing furniture to the UK.” He said he had spent almost 30,000€ so far in lawyers fees. “Again if this was the UK the prosecution would be a public expense and would have already come to trial.” The couple paid their money through another bank and should enjoy a guarantee under Ley 57/68 but as RTN recently reported there were thousands of people buying off-plan fighting to get compensation. In the letter to Mr Zapatero, Andrew accuses the developer of fraudulently arranging the mortgage “in collaboration” with CAM before fraudulently selling his home to a third party “In any country in the world that is fraud but bringing someone to court in Spain, especially if they are not Spanish citizens, is impossible!” he writes. “Justice in your country is impossible and yet here you are ‘crying’ over the state of your country’s ‘economic crisis’ whilst ignoring the underlying problems. “Your actions are akin to the treatment with aspirin whilst ignoring the underlying cause – a tumour the size of the combined area of the Spanish Costas which requires removal.” Andrew said the Spanish economy had relied on tourism and construction yet the construction industry was based upon “greed corruption and fraud.” The Wilfords do now own a villa on the island of Majorca but have had to endure the stresses – like other victims – of being caught up in a property fraud and the frustrations of feeling helpless. However, with hindsight, Andrew wishes he had never looked to buy a villa in the Spanish sun in the first place.

Streets of shame
by Jack Troughton MINDLESS THUGGERY has become this summer’s catchphrase as riots spread across the streets of London and out into the cities and towns of Britain, causing death and destruction. Millions of pounds of property has been looted, buildings – including homes – put to the torch and a massive police response been mobilised with talk of water cannon, baton rounds and even sending in troops. The courts are now open 24 hours as the numbers of rioters and looters arrested fast approaches 1,000 – and police say they are confident of using technology to bring people to justice. It was the same 21st Century technology that was reported to have helped roving gangs of bandits stay one street ahead of the law on Monday night – the worst evening of violence and thieving in the capital. It triggered Prime Minister David Cameron and Mayor of London Boris Johnson’s early return from holiday and yesterday’s recall of Parliament. Tuesday night witnessed 16,000 police on the streets of London and reinforcements sent to Manchester and Birmingham as the contagion spread. SICK Mr Cameron commented: “These are sickening scenes of
people looting, vandalising, attacking police officers, and even attacking fire crews. This is criminality and it has to be defeated.” The unrest began in Tottenham with a peaceful protest following the death of a young father in a police shooting. The family demanded answers, the protest was hi-jacked and the violence began. It spread like wildfire and police were ordered to make a tough response after initially losing control. The “mindless thugs” were and will be detained before the House of Commons looks at the root cause – disenfranchised youth, another popular phrase, with no prospects according to some experts. But one angry restaurant owner in Ealing said the youths trashing his Thai eaterie were far from deprived – sporting designer gear and holding Blackberry ‘phones. It was all very different to the protests in Spain earlier this summer when crowds peacefully occupied city squares and plazas prior to and after the elections to demand increased government spending, jobs and an end to corruption. However, while the House debates future strategy, there was hope for British society – in the form of ‘brush brigades’ and whole communities hitting the streets to sweep away the debris of mindless thuggery. It is hoped they can also clear away the simmering tensions.

Disabled badge victory
by Julie Day FOUR WEEKS ago, RTN ran the story of Torrevieja residents Ken and Jennifer Blair Hipkin, who had come up against a brick wall when applying for a disability badge for the couple’s car. Diagnosed in May with only four or five months left to live after doctors told Ken that secondary cancer had spread to his lung, the couple were astounded when they were informed that it would take a year for the disability badge to come through. Despite being resigned to the possible fact that they may not possess a disability badge for their car whilst Ken was still alive, the couple decided to contact RTN and warn others of their plight. The response to this story was immense, with many RTN readers disgusted that such a thing could happen. Readers rang in from Benijófar and Rojales to say that they had immediately been given temporary badges on going to their local town hall, which they were using in their car whilst waiting for the original – one man had been waiting for three years. Other readers wished the couple well and prayed for a positive result for them. However, good news seemed to be on the horizon when RTN contacted
Ken and Jennifer with the badge
the Department of Social Welfare in Alicante, the organisation that assesses a person’s level of disability and their grade of reduced mobility, and after discussing the case were told that Ken’s situation would be treated as urgent and the couple should have their muchneeded badge in a matter of weeks. Three weeks later RTN met Jen and accompanied her to collect the badge from the local police station in Torrevieja. The paperwork was handed over to an extremely helpful and friendly lady at the desk, who without any delay whatsoever made up a brand new shiny badge in Ken’s name and offered it to a delighted and relieved Jen.
“On behalf of Ken and myself, we are over the moon now that we’ve got the disability badge,” exclaimed Jen, “This badge will make our lives so much easier. I won’t have to struggle up hills or slopes at the hospital and we won’t have any more trouble carrying out day-to-day tasks like going to the bank, chemist or shops. We would like to thank RTN and you especially, as we couldn’t have managed without your help. Thank you so much to RTN and we are absolutely delighted with what you have done for us.” RTN wish Ken and Jennifer all the best and are pleased to have helped the couple with such an important matter and with such positive results.
Extension works on cemetery begin By Julie Day WORK BEGAN earlier this week on the extension of Torrevieja’s municipal cemetery. The project has a budget of 867,480€ and a time frame of five months in which to carry out the improvements. The work will include the construction of an extra 1,242 niches, new lighting and the resurfacing of the cemetery floor. Councillor for Infrastructure and Town Hall Projects, Javier Montoro commented that this work is being carried out in order to “guarantee burial space for the next 20 years.”

AS TIME goes by I cannot but notice the insurance industry is changing very fast. A few years ago the Spanish Insurance Companies were all secure in so far as renewals just happened and price comparisons were unheard of. Now it is very different, one company at least is out to take as many clients away from us with unrealistic prices. Watch this space, as the prices are not, in the long term, viable. Sadly, in the short term it is playing havoc with many established companies’ profitability and existence. Combine these premiums with the most horrendous market place; it is very worrying for the industry as a whole. I am also noticing that there are all types of businesses (but especially estate agents) opting to sell insurance, plus individuals with just a mobile phone. How this is allowed by the DGS I fail to understand. Also, how we are expected to survive the cut throat attitude is another matter. My company is experiencing, despite many loyal customers, unacceptable behavior from some agents/brokers. Be very, very careful when being tempted by cheaper prices, followed by a request to sign a form giving the company permission to do a quotation. No company requires a signature to create a quote. I have had a number of extremely distressed clients who have signed to include their NIE number. Why would a sales person request this information? I fully understand why, because the people have signed innocently to change agents, regardless of a quotation being given. This shappy behavior is often carried out in a person’s home! On behalf of some very angry clients my company then has to request from Liberty Saguaros a return of that client to my agency. Because the client has signed a formal change of agency form (not knowing what they were signing) Liberty have just carried out the clients instructions. Be careful,
make sure the company are fully regulated, are well known and enjoy a good reputation. I am now, because of market forces diversifying, working more with the associates. The associates are all fully regulated and authorized to offer their services in Spain. I have selected them carefully and feel very confident that they will enhance my company and make it even more secure. I am so fed up with hearing about ex pats being placed in a very difficult position by bad and incorrect advice. This is especially true of investment advice and Qrops, often with very high service fees on the Qrops (Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme). QROPS enables you to leave your private pension to your family in full, via your pension I think this is definitely worth a call, via us, please take care in choosing the company to ask advice, before investing your hard earned savings. We can also offer the Prudential Assurance products, which I remember fondly. The man from the PRU. The other service we continue to offer is currency exchange. Why pay fees and get less from your Sterling, how? Just by making one phone call to us. I can do no more but pass my experience on via the offices. We will, of course be continuing handling the General Insurance as well as health, funeral and life insurance. The sales consultants are there to help and point out why they are confident that their policies are amongst the best there are. Price alone is not the only reason to purchase, after sales are vital. This is not the UK and Spanish Companies can be very slow, and despite what many think rules and regulations are often quite different. I get frequently frustrated on an everyday basis endeavoring to fund and run a business in Spain.

At present with the gestors and abogada’s on a lovely long holiday, it’s a made even more difficult. I well understand that there is no one who is interested in my moans about loss of business. Just a shrug of the shoulders! I have also discovered that manaña is not tomorrow it means sometime in the future. I realize this attitude is very difficult for all of us to accept. I appreciate that there will always be a few clients whose expectations on claiming are far too high and are unhappy with our claims service. Unfortunately, although my staff always will go that extra mile for their clients, this will always happen. I do not make the rules and I am not in control of the wording in the policies. So often the abuse we have to listen goes beyond our brief, along with threats which are the down side of this industry. Service is of prime importance to my company via all the consultants and they will guarantee to go that extra mile. However, sometimes even they cannot achieve the impossible. The policy document along with the assessor’s reports is final. At present I have at least three ladies who are traumatized by the behavior of just a few clients. This is NOT okay. They do not need abusive threats to do their best for our clients. Indeed it works the other way. I know from the recommendations and wonderful testimonies that most clients feel very confident with the service and support they receive from my very hard working staff. Despite the ongoing recession which is hurting and frightening everyone my company is going from strength to strength. This assures me that hard work, honesty, good policies and after sales do work. Thank you to all of those who continue to support us, helping us to face the future with confidence.

Chance to talk to social Folk music on the coast services, local partners and the Consulate Bob Houliston, Ana Mas and Pablo Rodríguez present the two folk concerts
by Patricia Thompson THE BRITISH Consulate in Alicante and the Pension Benefit and Healthcare team are holding a special evening ‘Consulate in the Community’ event in Torrevieja on Thursday Sept 8th from 19:00-21:00 to address questions and concerns around healthcare and welfare for residents across the Costa Blanca South. Bearing in mind that in Torrevieja and the surrounding areas there are over 50,000 British nationals on the padron, the Consulate knows that it is important to ensure that everyone can get the information they need and get extra support if necessary. The event will be divided into two sections; the first is a “well-fayre”, whereby you will be able to get information from local authorities and different charities that will each have a stand. Uniquely, the Town Hall social services and Diputación in Alicante will be there and available to talk to people individually. Representatives of local English speaking charities will also be present - for example HELP, MABS, Age Concern, RBL and many more. The Consulate and Pension Benefit and Healthcare Teams will also be on hand to answer any questions you might have. The second part of the event consists of a presentation given by the Consul in Alicante and the Pension Benefit and Healthcare team to focus on access to healthcare and welfare issues in Spain followed by a short open question and answer session. British Consul Paul Rodwell said “Learning from customer feedback we have created a new dimension to our outreach events that will give British nationals the opportunity to get a wider variety of information from the experts. This means that on this occasion they will be able to talk to representatives of social services and the healthcare authorities from Spain. This is in addition to being able to speak to the Consu-
Centro Cultural Virgen Del Carmen
lar team and other English speaking support organisations.” Event details Centro Cultural Virgen Del Carmen C/Del Mar, 28, 03182 Torrevieja Time: 19:00-21:00 Anyone wishing to attend can book a place by going to ukinspain.fco.gov.uk and completing the appropriate online registration form. If you are having problems using the online booking form, you can reserve your place by calling 902 10 93 56.
By Julie Day ORIHUELA’S TOWN hall departments of Culture and the Coast have worked together in association with La Caixa bank to bring two folk music concerts to the coast this weekend. Both concerts will take place at 10.30pm on Playa Flamenca’s Paseo Marítimo over the nights of Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th August and admission is free. The first concert is by Azul y Nácar, a group with predominantly flamenco origins, whilst the second concert by Maracatú FM will see the fusion of traditional Brazilian music with a more contemporary sound. The project “Diversons”, which has been organised by the financial entity La Caixa, aims to promote integration between different cultures and in doing so to exchange traditions between these various groups that reside in Spain. Bob Houliston, councillor for the coast has shown his satisfaction that this type of event will take place this weekend, adding: “Traditionally on the coast events with a typical cultural content have not taken place in the past. This is the philosophy of the new government team, which is to bring culture to all areas.”
It’s a dog’s life for new Elche Council
THE ELCHE City Council is reviewing its policy on facilities for its doggy residents after it emerged that 75,000€ was spent on ‘doggy doo’ waste bags last year. The new administration threw it hands up in horror at the level of expenditure on pet hygiene and decided not to renew the contract that included the supplying of bags for dog owners. From now on dog walkers will have to provide their own bags and take the used bags home afterwards.

Pirate taxis tout for trade
The taxi rank at Alicante’s old terminal
by Jack Troughton
RTN readers can now enjoy an affordable day out for all the family!
PIRATE TAXIS are on the rampage in the Costa Blanca stealing around 15% of business from licensed drivers, according to new figures. Hotspots include the main holiday resorts of Benidorm and Torrevieja but it was claimed Alicante’s El Altet was the “viper’s nest” according to the Valencia taxi driver’s union. Unlicensed drivers face fines of 6,000€ but over the last few summer seasons the problem has exploded and tensions are running high between taxi drivers and people they accuse of piracy. In Benidorm, Councillor Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate has called for more police action to “eradicate” the growing problem. He said the pirates were “uninsured and unlicensed, are not taxed and work in the black economy.” The politician said the illegal taxis were also detrimental to tourism. TOUGH
And he said he was surprised the council had not taken a tougher stance after being provided with the number plates of cars suspected of being pirates from legitimate taxi drivers. Taxi drivers themselves say the Valencia Agency for Transportation should take action but complained there did not seem to be the resources to tackle the problem. The agency’s director Mar Martinez said he understood the frustrations of legitimate operators. “Complaints are not lost in a drawer.” Children 4 to 12 years He said the body was sensitive to the “intrusion” of pirates and proceedings were being undertaken – some 95 pirates being fined over the last 12 months. RTN highlighted the problem at Alicante Airport two years ago when people were being stopped by police and risking being fined when they were either meeting family and friends or dropping them off to fly back to the UK.

British Consul discusses security issues with Alicante Airport by Julie Day YESTERDAY, THE British Consul in Alicante, Paul Rodwell, met with the Director of the Alicante Airport and police representatives to discuss security issues. The aim of the meeting was to gather information about the functioning of the new terminal and raise the British Consulate’s concerns over the number of passports that have been stolen since it opened. The British Consul said “We enjoy a very good working relationship with the airport authority and with the police and they are always receptive to our requests and comments. The new terminal has improved significantly the airport’s capacity and service quality but we must continue to
work with the authorities to cover all issues affecting the security of British passengers” 3.9 million British nationals travelled through the Alicante airport last year making, 40% of the total number of passengers.

HAVING DECIDED a friendship group/s within Paul Cunningham Nurses would be a good idea, I now need a small team of people to work with to make this happen and also an idea of what kind of response we will get if we organise a get together once a week. To start with one will be in Playa Flamanca area and one will be in Quesada Area. If you would like to know more please contact me at sueinthesun@hotmail. co.uk 966 713 503 / 639 318 526 If you live in a different area and are interested in a friendship group, either helping to organise one or being a member, please still send me an email as once the first two groups are up and running the plan is to expand into other areas. Everyone is welcome, couples, singles, ladies and gentlemen whose partner is working away or has a time consuming hobby, if you have any questions or just want to have a chat to see if this is for you then please get in touch.
A QUICK fix to the British Financial problem, leading to longer term prosperity: First off, stop giving our money away to overseas countries that are sucking the life out of us. This is money that we do not have. However much the EU pushes, do not give any further ‘help’. It’s certainly not helping us. Bring all our servicemen and women back from wars that we will never, ever win and that are costing UK PLC mega money. Put our returning soldiers into plain clothes and send them all over the country to hunt down all illegal immigrants. Once caught, deport all illegal immigrants immediately with no excuses accepted. No new immigrants to be accepted whatsoever, apart from proven asylum cases. Tell the Eurozone to go to hell. We want to run our own country for our own people. Ignore EU Policy and Human Rights garbage and do what works for us. Call in our debts. Did the EU ever fully pay back the overpayments that we made in the 1980s? Bring back capital punishment and clean the jails out of convicted murderers, rapists and drug dealers. It’s a sad fact that prisoners are better looked after than our OAPs. It’s a total disgrace…don’t mention their human rights - as far as I’m concerned, they don’t have any. The remaining prisoners should be sent out in chain gangs to rebuild and clean our communities for FREE and to act as a deterrent; they could resurface the roads too. Stop benefits for junkies and alcoholics; drunks and drug users who have overindulged / overdosed have to pay full
Waiting for a reply...... Sorry this may be a bit late but I wanted to see if Overseas would reply themselves to the letter in 29th July issue about the pricing against the Euro for items priced at £1. Myself was upset by this and I did the best thing and confronted Overseas about this, and here is their answer that satisfied me. The cost in Euro verses the Pound is not as at the exchange rate but has to take into account the cost of transportation and importation cost’s and we all know how the price of fuel has gone up, the lorries that bring the food to you only do 10 to 12 miles per gallon so you can see with the high percentage increase in the last two years how this will impact on a journey of over a thousand miles plus the increased ferry prices. Also the Spanish government in it’s measures to combat the effects of the recession on them have increased import tax on goods brought into the country, so that is why the discrepancy over the price of goods verses the Euro and obviously all other products. I did point out that a notice in the store to this effect would be a good idea to which the reply was I’ll look into it so perhaps He’s still looking. This was two months ago. Graham E Johnson.
whack for hospital care; unmarried teenage fathers and mothers to be sterilised after the birth of their first child; fine fly tippers more consistently and increase the fines. Use the old education system that worked. Teach the basics as a priority: reading, writing and maths. Make sure everyone is up to standard. Businesses and organisations should stop paying silly money to entertainers, footballers and musicians and start paying out to the real people of everyday life like doctors, soldiers, nurses and firemen and thereby creating realistic incentives and opportunities for children. Stop selling off British companies to foreign investors; re-purchase the power companies; repay the foreign institutions who bought them the amount they paidWe need to protect our own country base. Lower VAT and business taxes: people will spend more...easy economics... everyone wins. Shut down all ‘quangos’. Stop politicians claiming expenses for anything; they should pay with their earnings like everyone else unless it pertains to their work like travelling to meetings. FREE healthcare to UK citizens: non-citizens pay the full cost of treatment. All the above would save billions to invest in our own country and make jobs for everyone that wanted one. It should, if done properly, improve all our lives and the next generations coming up. Perhaps then we could all be proud to call our home, Great Britain. Name and address supplied
A FEW months ago you printed a letter from me regarding the fabulous service from Millie Munro regarding my health insurance. Well, Millie has done it again! I was forced to go to hospital after having a very painful knee and was quite frankly not too happy with the service I received. Within 12 hours of my going there, Millie’s office had arranged for me to have an alternative appointment with a specialist for a second opinion - paid for by my insurance company. What service - and all done with compassion. I cannot thank Millie Munro’s company enough. Personal service which is quite extraordinary in this day and age. Hilary Petrie, Daya Nueva.
One rule for one and one for another I AM not normally one to be petty but what I experienced last week (Friday 29th July) made my blood boil. Two weeks ago I went to the Town Hall at Playa Flamenca with my husband. As I was only collecting information from the tourist office my husband dropped me off just outside across from Bankinter. I went into the Town Hall and my husband waited in the car: admittedly he had parked across two parked cars but he was in the car. Two policemen from the Town Hall told my husband he should drive away and park correctly and that he was not allowed to park or wait there. You can imagine my surprise today (photo attached) when my husband and I were in this area again, this time at the bank, to see a vehicle parked a little further down from where my husband had waited. However, this vehicle was totally blocking
the disabled access to the Town Hall and the driver was away into the Town Hall without a glance over his shoulder. As I mentioned above I am not normally petty but yesterday I waited a quarter of an hour, much to my husband’s dismay, just to see what would happen. In this time the driver did not re-appear nor did a passing Policia Local officer as much as wink an eye. Is it one rule for one and one rule for another? Granted we should not have waited where we did but my husband could have driven our car away immediately. This careless car driver only had his padron or residencia in mind (or whatever he was doing at the Town Hall) with no thought to people in wheelchairs or families with pushchairs. The saying ‚I’m alright Jack‘ comes to mind. Elsie Bellhouse, La Zenia

by Julie Day AFTER THE success of Chicago The Musical, which was shown in Torrevieja at the beginning of this year, attracting more than 3,000 spectators, Torrevieja’s department for Culture has once again opted for another hit musical and top-seller at national box offices. 40 The Musical will be performed in Torrevieja’s municipal theatre from 18th – 21st August after similar Chicago success in Madrid and Barcelona. The show, which is suited to people of all ages, includes a sound track of almost 100 popular songs that have reached number 1 in the Top 40 charts in their time, which are interpreted by almost 100 actors, dancers and musicians. As well as well-known Spanish chart songs
from stars like Alejandro Sanz or Miguel Bosé, the cast will perform international toppers such as Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance and “I got a feeling” from the Black Eyed Peas. However, although the music is the protagonist of the show, there is also a story, which recounts the lives, loves, problems and passions of a group of young friends who are growing up and on the brink of adulthood. The youngsters discover that their problems are being broadcast over the radio by their good friend who then forces them to look at their lives in depth and face up to their personal conflicts. Tickets for 40 The Musical are priced at 45€ and 55€ and can be purchased through ServiCAM or from the municipal theatre box office from Tuesday – Friday between 11am and 1pm or two hours before each performance.
CASTELAR COLLEGE in San Pedro del Pinatar was recently the choice venue for a group of scouts from Somerset U.K. The world scouting organization has been around for 104 years and is present in all but five countries around the world. Every four years they arrange a two week Jamboree and this year en route from Sweden as part of the event a group of 40 scouts visited San Pedro Del Pinatar where they stayed at Castelar College in San Pedro del Pinatar on the Mar Menor. The recently appointed Mayoress of San Pedro (Visitacion Martinez Martinez) accompanied by Guadalupe Garcia Oliver (Minister for Education) welcomed the scouts to the area. Whilst visiting the area the scouts sampled some true Spanish life, visited the local beaches including the well known mud baths & visited some of the famous historic landmarks including the Teatro Romano in Cartagena. The staff at Castelar also arranged a much appreciated VIP tour of the Military Academy in Santiago de La Ribera. The Mayoress said “We were honoured to
have such a prestigious group as the scouts visit the area” and Ben Groves (Scout Leader) said “they were delighted with the hospitality shown to them throughout their stay in the area and in particular the wonderful facilities at Castelar College”, so much so that they are already planning a return trip to the area in 2012. The Julio Iglesias and Tom Jones concerts in Gandia attract widespread public interest THIS IS the run up to the end of the musical event “Gandia, el mar donde se unen las estrellas” (Gandia, the sea where stars come together), which will finalize with these two concerts: Spain’s most international artist, Julio Iglesias, on Sunday, and Tom Jones who will be presenting his new album, next Tuesday. Fires in the night...
Watts In Britain By
Paul Watts
There I was last week worrying about falling leaves; if only that was the only worry this week. On Monday afternoon I drove across the Aston Expressway into Birmingham only to be stopped on the exit slip at the Lancaster Circus roundabout by a police road block. Within moments I was re-directed back onto the Expressway and away from the city. Trouble, similar to that going on in London, was expected to “kick off” the young police officer told me. Apparently, hundreds of ‘Blackberry’ linked thugs and criminals were answering a viral call-to-arms. At one point there was an appeal to Blackberry to close its network but this was refused. At six o’clock trouble broke out in Bristol, Nottingham, Liverpool and here in Birmingham. My youngest daughter works in the heart of the city and as she headed for her home-bound train, just before six, she noticed large groups of youths starting to gather – all were wearing hoods or scarves. She said the atmosphere was really weird because it seemed so still and strangely quiet. By the time she was on her train pulling out of New Street station, up at street level it was starting to turn nasty: the fine city centre was being systematically looted and trashed. Friends of my wife became ‘trapped’ inside a pub until ten o’clock when they made a dash to the railway station through the relative safety of the police cordon. The Old Joint Stock Pub is located in the heart of Birmingham’s city centre amongst the banks and international commerce and opposite the cathedral. Built in 1864, this grade two listed building is huge with great big wooden doors and was previously the Birmingham Joint Stock Bank prior to being taken over by Lloyds Bank in 1889. On Monday it became a refuge to its customers as those massive doors were bolted against all that was occurring outside. One man quipped, “I’ve never known a lock-in that started before closing time.” By Tuesday morning West Midland Police had arrested over 100 people. Assistant Chief Constable Sharon Rowe told BBC West Midlands that many of those arrested were young people and she urged parents to make sure they knew where their children were. The England cricket team were in Birmingham and had to remain in their hotel. Earlier in the day England bowler Tim Bresnan had said on Twitter: “It’s going to be a fantastic week. The only thing missing is a rainy-day dartboard.” Within two hours that had all changed to: “Just seen the rioters in Birmingham fleeing down the main street followed by a load of police in the full get-up [riot gear]. What’s going on?” Team-mate and all-rounder Stuart Broad added on his Twitter account: “Police vans all around Birmingham where we are right now.” And further south police vans were particularly stretched in flashpoints all across London. As Monday night unfolded the skyline of the capital became punctuated with red glows. At the time of writing (Tuesday) I’m guessing that the England v Holland football match on Wednesday will no doubt be called off. One clearly disappointed football fan told Sky News, “We should be like the Americans
- we should shoot looters.” Feelings running very high. There were even calls to mobilise the British Army and get troops out onto the streets of London. Drastic measures for sure; but many people interviewed in the affected areas wanted this to happen. The rioters’ use of Twitter and social network sites has been well documented. That it’s aiding ‘co-ordination’ of these yobs is in no doubt however, the flip side is the revelation that a far larger number of people horrified at the events have also used these sites in rallying help and support. People have gathered in large numbers to help aid in the clean-up operations. I can report that in Birmingham the speed of the clean-up has been phenomenal – council crews were out in force early Tuesday morning and the streets might be scarred but they sure are clean. Well done to those crews. In London they haven’t seen as many fires on a single night since the Blitz in the early 1940s. One elderly lady said on the BBC, “Hitler was like these yobs, he tried to bring us down. But he didn’t.” No he didn’t - not even with the aid of a mighty air force. The Luftwaffe couldn’t do it, so these parasites have got no chance. And if these criminal yobs are fond of breaking things up, maybe some angry judge could send those found guilty down to the heart of Dartmoor to break up some rocks instead... Spanish lessons by
Jane Cronin
A weekly ‘cut out and keep’ feature helping you to learn basic Spanish for everyday needs
Superlatives - ísimo The subject of this article doesn’t appear in dictionaries although it is used in spoken Spanish all the time. It is called the `superlative’ form when the word endings `ísimo -ísima - ísimos - ísimas’ are tagged onto words to make their meaning stronger. They rather fit with the Spanish temperament really, and the Spanish way of expressing themselves. You don’t just say something is good `bueno’, you say it’s `buenísimo’, which means very very good. It is very expressive and also, once you’ve got the hang of it, quite good fun to use. You see a nice handsome man and you want to say that he is `guapo’, well, actually he’s absolutely gorgeous, he’s ‘guapísimo’. As we’ve mentioned before, these describing words change their endings depending on whether they are describing something masculine or feminine, and something singular or plural, so when describing a woman, or something feminine these two words become `buena’ and `guapa’ with an `a’ at the end. So, if you want to say, for example, that someone or something feminine is extremely good, you can say it is ‘buenísima’ with an `a’ at the end. Or if a girl or woman is extremely pretty she is `guapísima’. When there’s more than one thing being described, an `s’ goes on the end as well - so some very pretty women are `guapísimas’, and very good children are `buenísimos’ and so on. Let’s look at some more adjectives and see what we can do with them - firstly, big and small. As we have already seen, `big’ is `grande’ so extremely big `grandísimo’ or `grandísima’. `Small’ is `pequeño’ or `pequeña’ so extremely small is, `pequeñísimo’ and `pequeñísima’. Likewise old and young. `Old’ is `viejo’ or `vieja’, extremely old `viejísimo’, `viejísima’, and young is `joven’, very, very young `jovenísimo’, `jovenísima’. I hope you’re beginning to get the idea. Here are a few more basic adjectives that describe people physically. Firstly, `tall’ and `short’, which are `alto’ and `bajo’; `fat’ and `thin’, `gordo’ and `delgado’ and there is a slightly more diplomatic way of saying fat, i.e. plump or well-built, is to use the
Spanish word for strong which is `fuerte’. So, if `alto’ is `tall’, basket-ball player tall is `altísimo’. `Bajo’ is `short’, unusually short is `bajísimo’. `Gordo’ is `fat’, major obesity problem is `gordísimo’. `Delgado’ is ‘thin’, skinny as a rake is ‘delgadísimo’ and if `fuerte’ is `strong’, Arnold Schwarzaneger strong is `fuertísimo’. Remember that the words ending in the letter `o’, will end in `a’ when they refer to something or someone feminine. Now for some more interesting adjectives. If I were teaching a class at this point I would ask my students to suggest some adjectives in English that they’d like to be able to say in Spanish, but as I’m not, you’re stuck with my selection. Let’s get off physical size, shall we? Here are some words we might use more often in everyday life, for example cheap and expensive. `Cheap’ as we know is `barato’ and `expensive’ is `caro’. So how do you think we would say ridiculously cheap? - answer, `baratísimo’. Next question: `caro’ is `expensive’, how do we say it’s so expensive it’s a joke? -`carísimo’. Now let’s go for easy and difficult. `Easy’ is `fácil’ so what’s laughingly easy? `facilísimo’ of course! Do you know the word for `difficult’? It’s `difícil’. Unbelievably difficult therefore is `dificilísimo’. Now let’s try this on some long words! What about important - `importante’. How do we say vitally important? … yes, `importantísimo’. Now we’ll go for `intelligent’ - `inteligente’. What is the standard of a member of MENSA? - `inteligentísimo’. There’s one more example you will definitely hear a lot on the TV or radio when people are bending over backwards to be polite and gracious. Instead of saying thank you very much which is “muchas gracias”, they’re forever saying “muchísimas gracias”, thank you ever so much, very, very much indeed. Listen out for it, I’m sure you’ll hear it. So, in conclusion, I’m sorry if this was all `dificilísimo’, but I’m sure you’re `inteligentísimo’, and in any case, “muchísimas gracias” for reading it anyway. SPANISH FARMERS rock from one crisis to another in the aftermath of the cucumber scandal; the result of the recent Ecoli infection that caused thousands of people to fall ill in Europe, sourced in Germany but blamed on Spain. In Pilar de la Horadada on Tuesday around 3,000 kilos of highly perishable watermelons had to be destroyed. There are three million kilos in stock. The president of the Surinver cooperative, Benjamin Samper, fears the industry is facing a 30% decline in sales. Farmers awaiting the arrival of compensation authorised by the EU are carrying out-of-pocket losses, with many going bankrupt.

The shoe trade takes steps to protect its designs THE FOOTWEAR industry in Spain is spending in excess of 100,000€ per year on measures to protect trademarks abroad and discourage the production of poor quality copies. Companies belonging to the Association of Exporters of Footwear Valencia (Cavex) are spending 113,000€ per year in the registration of trademarks, designs and patents. Cavex Director Clara Aura said, “Companies should thoroughly examine their collections to establish the lines with the greatest potential for success and therefore the designs most likely to be copied, which could result in prestigious firms being exposed to unfair competition.”
Telefonica down 16.3% in profit TELEFONICA HAS experienced a drop in profits of €3.162 million, equating to 16.3% for the first half of 2011, partly due to the value set on its stake in Telecom Italia by Telcoo. Revenues rose by 6.3% for Telefonica to €30.886 million, driven by Latin America contributing 46% and the corporation’s multinational telecommunications interests.

Evicting the skeletons by
Suzanne O’Connell Customer Care at Ábaco
Every house has probably got at least one skeleton in the closet. Perhaps the site of a dodgy dealing, a tragic accident or just with a sad tale to tell. We’ve seen those American films of homes built on Indian burial sites and rooms from which the souls of the dead can’t escape. But, the reality is that walls don’t weep or have ears or carry any other form of personification. Their job is to keep out the rain and the sun at 8 o’clock in the morning. However, houses in Spain can carry a legacy from their previous owners. Debts. These might not be ethereal but they can cause just as much trouble as the regular poltergeist. So, charmed by the view and seduced by the swimming pool we might be, what we mustn’t do is rush into a purchase but carry out a little investigation first. The Spanish government is making it easier for us to do that. It was reported in the RTN last week that potential purchasers of property are now able to access official records in English. The Land Registry are inviting
us to submit a request for a ‘Land registry extract’ or ‘nota simple’ to probe into some of those secrets that even the tidiest of properties might conceal. The nota simple gives the details of any mortgages and debts held against the property and is essential information for anyone considering a purchase. If you go on the interactive land registry site at https://buyingahouse.registradores.org/ you will find the instructions for submitting a request. It costs 29€ plus VAT and usually takes two days to complete. There is an example on the website to help you understand the document when you receive it. The information you’ll be given includes: • A description of the property - including several physical features such as its boundaries, floors, surface area • If it is part of a community of owners • Who owns it and their identification • Mortgages and any loans held against the property • Any outstanding taxes or debts held against the property
Of course, if you use a lawyer to purchase and complete on a property they will access this information for you as part of their service. Having this information in your native language is a bonus but it doesn’t remove the need for additional checks to be completed. For example, the nota simple doesn’t tell you whether there are outstanding community fees or if there is a habitation certificate in existence. Without the habitation certificate you won’t be able to complete on a mortgage or take out a new water or electricity contract. The good news is that it does signify a step forward by the Spanish Government in recognising the difficulties there have been with property purchase in Spain. A positive move that won’t protect you from Indian burial grounds but will reduce the risk of you inheriting someone else’s debts. We can help with all legal aspects of a house sale or purchase. Legal requirements for a handwritten Will by
Carlos Baos
of White & Baos Abogados English & Spanish Solicitors
DEAR SIRS, My sister, who like me was a British citizen, sadly passed away few months ago. She left a handwritten and signed Will leaving her Spanish property to me. Unfortunately there is no other Will in the UK or Spain. This Will was not signed in front of a Spanish Notary and it was handwritten in English. The solicitor acting for my sister’s husband has told me that this Will is not valid as it was not signed in front of a Spanish Notary and the English Intestacy Laws would apply, placing her husband as the sole beneficiary. Is this true? Is there anything I can do? Dear reader, Thank you for your query. A handwritten Will signed by the testator / testatrix is known under Spanish Law as a HOLOGRAPH WILL, regulated under article 688 et seq. of the Spanish Civil Code. Therefore the Will signed by your sister could be valid provided it complies with the following
legally stipulated requirements: Firstly it should be noted that article 688 states that a Holographic Will can be granted in the testatrix’s own language, so in principle the fact of being written in English should not represent a problem; however in order for your late sister’s Will to be valid it should meet the following requirements: • The testatrix must be of legal age at the time of granting the Will. • The Will and its contents must have been totally handwritten and signed by the testatrix stating the year, month and day when it was granted. • If there are any crossed out words, amended words or words written between the lines, then these should have been corrected by the testatrix and signed by her. VALIDATION PROCEDURE FOR THIS TYPE OF WILL If the Will meets the above legal requirements then it should be registered within five years from the day of death in front of the ‘Judge for the First Instance Court’ who has jurisdiction over the deceased’s last address, or the address where the death occurred. The person in possession of the Will should submit it to the Court within 10 days from when the death of the testator is known. The Will can
also be submitted to the Court by any other person holding an interest in the deceased’s estate i.e. an executor, a possible beneficiary etc. If the Judge accepts that the handwriting and signature have been clearly identified as belonging to the testatrix and the Will in general complies with all the legal requirements then he will agree to have it registered at the Notary under the corresponding protocol. Should this not be the case then the Judge will not allow the registry to be made. Therefore as per the above and through the proper procedure your late sister’s Will could be perfectly valid and recognised in Spain. However as we have previously advised on past occasions it is highly recommended for everyone to have a Spanish Will, especially persons not holding Spanish nationality and owners of property, rights or assets in Spain. The Will should of course be drafted under proper legal advice to avoid this problem and other more serious problems that could occur. The information provided on this article is not intended to be legal advice, but merely conveys general information related to legal issues. We kindly invite you to visit and comment about this article in our blog at http://www.white-baos.com/blog/ Your comments in this respect will be greatly appreciated.

“The problems of Spain come to America” says Obama
US PRESIDENT Barack Obama has stressed the globalisation of the economy in an address on Monday where he defended the United States, saying his country “…will always be ‘AAA’,” adding: when we have problems in Europe and in Spain, Italy and Greece, these problems eventually arrive at our shores.” The president was speaking just hours after talking on the telephone with Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Zapatero about plans to coordinate in the promotion of stability to prevent an economic shutdown. Despite Obama’s patriotic ‘triple A’ speech, America has now been downgraded and pegged an ‘AA+ risk’.

Do I really need property insurance? by
Philip Rayner
AJB Consultants
It is not a legal requirement, but is definitely a very good idea. WHY? Well, let’s look at some of the risks that you may face. Your house could be broken into. This results, not only in the cost of the items that are stolen, but also the damage that the burglars do while breaking into your property, as well as the damage that may cause inside the house. Often the damage the burglars cause, far outweighs the costs of the items that they steal. I am afraid that during this crisis, crime has increased – we have noticed a large rise in the number of burglaries. Your house may be flooded or damaged during one of our country’s frequent storms. You would face, not only the costs of the damaged items, but also the costs of the repainting, repairing and cleaning up. There is also the public liability aspect. If part of your property injures or damages a third party you are liable. If your pet or child causes injury or damage to a third party, again, you as the property owner are liable. Imagine what would happen if your garden wall fell onto your neighbours car, or even worse injured your neighbour. It would be very expensive. If you let your property, the risks are multiplied considerably. During a storm, your electricity supply is interrupted and comes back with a power surge. Your TV, video, satellite system, central heating unit, telephone etc. would all have to be replaced. How much would that lot cost? You suffer a burst water pipe. There are the costs of tracing the leak, repairing the leak, repainting the damaged area, replacing the damaged goods.
Etc., etc….. NOW do you think you need property insurance? I have worked in insurance for many years and can honestly say that I have heard all the nightmare stories. People coming into my office in tears because they didn’t have insurance and had been robbed of everything (the thieves had a furniture lorry, I kid you not!) An elderly couple who were being sued by a neighbour because their dog attacked his young child and caused severe injuries. Again they had no property insurance and were likely to face having to sell their villa in order to pay the compensation costs. In my opinion, if you own a property you should insure it, if not for your own belongings, then for the public liability risk. The cost of the insurance is minimal compared to the potential costs that a claim might cause. As an example, a villa in Almeria worth 180,000 euros with contents of 20,000 euros would cost from only 199.25 euros a year to insure. That’s a lot less than the cost of one cup of coffee per day. It’s a small price to pay to protect your belongings and have peace of mind. We can now offer half-yearly payments at no extra charge. Everybody is suffering in this crisis, we all need to cut down on costs, but we have to make sure that the cost cutting is effective. I think that the above shows why it is important to have property insurance. So why choose AJB CONSULTANTS for your property insurance? • We have been established in Spain since 1987

Natural cooling ceiling fans NOT SURPRISINGLY the warm weather and increasing electricity costs have resulted in elevated sales of more cost effective cooling systems, the best of which are ceiling fans. RTN and Merche from Vimaluz explain some useful points and tips for those considering buying a ceiling fan. Ceiling fans are the most effective of all circulating fans. They produce intense circulation and draft, are particularly quiet, and typically use very little energy. There are many unique designs (Vimaluz have over 30), customers can be sure to find a great ceiling fan no matter what type of décor they have. CEILING FANS MAY REDUCE AIR CONDITIONING USE Ceiling fans may easily reduce your air condi-
tioning bills. The air movement created by ceiling fans in a room is equivalent to a 4º-5ºF decrease in indoor temperatures. Installing a ceiling fan in the rooms where you spend the most time in hot weather conditions is a wise option.
family rooms, kitchen, office, or even in patios or screened porches, if there is some type of cover to keep rain water from damaging the fan. A proper installation is crucial for better performance and higher energy savings.
THE FAN BLADES DIRECTION Typically ceiling fan blades turn in the counterclockwise direction. However, in winter, in high ceiling homes, ceiling fans can help to push down the warm air that’s near the ceiling: to achieve it, change the direction of the fan blades to the clockwise direction, and set the fan on the lowest speed. This will drive warm air near the ceiling down to lower levels, increasing comfort.
INEXPENSIVE Ceiling fans are relatively low cost. Just choose the right fan within the many attractive and modern efficient designs Some other benefits are their calm ambiance, they can also make the area far more attractive and can be equipped together with an variety of lamps. Vimaluz have a careful but extensive range of quiet, high-performance and energy-saving ceiling fans with options for all decorating styles. Currently Vimaluz in Denia are offering up to 30% discount, but hurry along, they are going fast. They are situated in Ptda. Madrigueres Sud 60B, Denia. Entrance to Denia coming from Ondara, turn right at Chevrolet garage roundabout, then left at Seat garage, and then first right. Their factory and showroom is based at the end on the left. For information email info@iluminacionydecoracion.com or see their advert on Page 7
INSTALLATION TIPS Ceiling fans work best when their blades are about 250cm above the floor and 100cm below the ceiling. Fans shouldn’t be installed too close to the walls either: at approx 40cm from them. Ceiling Fans provide good air-flow which assists in keeping an excellent atmosphere and also drives bugs away. You may install a fan in each room with cooling needs (and where you and your family spend most the time in hot weather conditions): bedrooms,

August is one of the months of the year when it is easy to have a good diversity of both fruit and vegetables to harvest. Just went through the lists of fruit in ‘Growing Healthy Fruit in Spain’ and of vegetables in ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ and determined that it could be possible during august to harvest during 24 of the 74 fruits listed and 44 of the 104 vegetables and herbs listed.
Mix of fruit and veg
What diversity! What a chance to achieve the recommended five portions, a cup full of each, of
August harvests and gluts several fruit and vegetables a day harvested fresh when at their best! If you have not yet fitted fruit trees and bushes, and a small vegetable patch or containers, into your garden or apartment terraces think about starting in September to have vegetables for eating during the autumn and for Christmas, including new potatoes. Except for strawberries under plastic you will have to wait until after the autumn rains to plant trees and a few years for the first fruit harvests. As well as enjoying a diversity of tastes and a good top up of essential vitamins and minerals without buying health supplements you may well have too much to eat, even after selling some to neighbours and friends. If you have gluts prepare them for eating at a later date. The possibilities include drying, freezing, bottling, making into chutneys or jams, making homemade liquors, or just plain storing in a dry shady place like squash and melons. Naturally if you have rabbits they will enjoy a few carrots and chickens love courgettes and Swiss chard going to seed. When you harvest your almonds we find it best to dry in the sun before attempting to remove the green husk. Sweet corn can be strung up to store in the garage or under build and onions are best hung in small open weave sacks rather than
boxes to ensure good air circulation. Peanuts are probably ready to harvest by the end of the month or if not in September. Suggest you wash the shells well and then dry in an oven at not more that 50 degrees centigrade or on a heated tray drier. Before you eat them all put some in an airtight jar and label as seeds for planting next May. Don’t forget that this is a good time to dry herbs. Our drier is currently drying five trays of stevia leaves as our sugar substitute. By the way stevia plants can still be obtained from info@dolcarevolucio.cat. Yes it is a Cataluña

No turning space? Does your property have limited parking space, or do you have to reverse out of your drive onto a busy road? Then an automated vehicle turntable from THE CAR TURNTABLE COMPANY could be the answer to your problem! Many properties in this beautiful region have wonderful views due to being on a hill or mountain, but very often they are let down by limited or no turning space for a vehicle, resulting in the dangerous manoeuvre of reversing into traffic. Maybe the situation is fine while there is only one vehicle, but with two the problem returns. A car turntable can make use of an area, so as to allow two, three or more vehicles to park by simply driving onto the turntable, rotating to the desired position and parking ready to exit.
Car turntables are specifically designed to take away the headache that comes with having to manoeuvre vehicles in tight spaces. Escalating urban density, and an increased awareness of reversing accidents has also increased the popularity of vehicle turntables. If you are selling or even buying a property, parking facilities feature heavily in the final choice, and this could be the only negative aspect of the house, but it can be enough to put off a potential buyer. It can lead to a house being on the market for a long time, resulting in an inevitable price reduction. Now a 10% reduction (which is normal) could be anything between 30,000 Euros to 100,000 Euros or more, and if it’s all because of the parking or manoeuvring problem, this could easily be resolved for a fraction of this amount.
Home & Garden
THE CAR TURNTABLE COMPANY offers a variety of sizes to suit your requirements: • 3.8 metre diameter model which is suitable for a small hatch-back, • 4.1 metre diameter model that can comfortably turn a 3000kg 4×4 • 5 metre diameter model will fit two small family hatchbacks • 6 metre model will quite happily turn two 4×4’s Most are available in either manual or motorised options, the motorised being powered by an industrial 3 phase motor for reliability. This, in turn, runs through an inverter to allow a standard 230 volt household socket to be used. A turn-key operation with emergency stop comes as standard with a motorised turntable, and a remote option is also available allowing you to drive directly onto the turntable and revolve the vehicle in just one move. A choice of surfaces are available from an aluminium tread plate, which can be colour coded if desired, or a small upgrade can be made to allow for the same surface as the drive, leaving a seamless finish. With all-inclusive prices starting from around €9000 Euros +IVA, the cost will be outweighed by the benefits gained. This safe and reliable piece of equipment will bring huge practical benefits, as well as being a sound investment resolving the headache that difficult manoeuvring situations can cause. You will wonder how you ever managed without one! THE CAR TURNTABLE COMPANY is the authorized supplier and installer (Spain) for the ‘SPIN IT’ range of high quality, vehicle turntables and they offer a service to both the domestic and commercial markets. Telephone 666 868 455 or visit their website www.thecarturntablecompany.com for further information or to request a no obligation quotation.

Brits behaving badly Cycling along the beach recently I couldn’t help but slow down to admire the way the Spanish enjoy the late afternoon sun, the BBQ’s were out, the games had started and the whole beach had a pleasant buzz to it …… and then a stone landed on my head! Looking round it didn’t take me long to find the culprits: three youths, red as lobsters, drunk as skunks, throwing stones at the seagulls. You have guessed already, but I will confirm: they were British. In that one small microcosm of beach life it was all so perfectly summed up as to why so many countries across the world at best tolerate us Brits on holiday. Of course people like that are in the minority, but as is often the case the minority have the ‘loudest voice’ and ‘perception is reality’ as they say. So I thought I would do a little research: and it seems that Spain last year saw the largest number of arrests of British citizens abroad, beating the drug related arrests from the likes of Jamaica, Argentina, Brazil, Serbia and Peru. The same report showed that Spain continues to be the country with the most Britons hospitalized each year, a number that is still increasing year on year. Bullfighting was in the news again this week, although I can’t report any victories for the bulls this time, rather the opposite in fact as the controversial sport has been declared ‘an artistic discipline and cultural product’, protecting it from mounting pressure by animal rights campaigners who want the practice banned. The tradition is already illegal in Catalonia after a law was passed against it last year and many had hoped that more regions would follow in their footsteps, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. Am not sure what the situation is like with Mosquitos where you are,
but they are pretty rampant here at times, but there may be a solution, albeit a somewhat drastic one! Contrary to popular belief, mosquitos are attracted to their prey not by the sweetness of their blood, but by the amount of carbon dioxide they exhale. The insects detect CO2 on the air current and know that there is fresh blood to be had not far away. Adults produce more CO2 than children, and the amount depends on diet and how physically active the person is. So ………..stop breathing, or at least learn to hold your breath for a very long time! Last story as I have something to say at the end. Lots of coverage as you would expect about the forthcoming election in Spain (which I have been asked to cover in series of articles for the Telegraph if you are at all interested!) with a number of experts predicting an absolute majority for the Popular Party. One thing that virtually every expert seems to agree on though is that post election there is going to have to be a lot of belt tightening across Spain, in what is being described as an “attack on living standards” as Spain faces yet more austerity cuts. And finally ….. appears that my recent comment “One of the best for me was that we have an answer as to why Spaniards stay at home for their holidays rather than venture abroad: They are scared! That´s right, the macho men of Spain, who will happily beat up their partners, watch a man with a sharp stick kill a bull and tie up and leave a pet dog to die are scared of driving abroad!” hit a nerve with a Spanish reader, which I must say is good! Good obviously that that they are reading an English Language paper (let’s be honest how many of us Brits read the Spanish ones?) and good that they felt so passionately about the subject. Without going into great detail I think that the ‘nuance’ or the ‘irony’ didn’t make it through the tran-
sition process, although I will say that while I agree, and have often written, that many domestic violence cases are committed in Spain by non Spaniards the fact remains that it happens on an increasingly regular basis in their country and more often than not by people that are already under restraining orders from their courts. I think the phrase we would use is “it happens on their watch”, so it is about time to stand up and take responsibility. As for the claim that most animal cruelty is also by foreigners though that is just rubbish. I see too many cats and dogs abandoned, tied up and left to die, neglected and thrown out onto the streets by the Spanish to ever be convinced otherwise. We work with a number of exceptionally caring and compassionate Spanish people in our cat re-homing and transport project (www.alstrays.com) and they are forever apologizing for their countries attitude towards the animals. They inform me that the schools are making more of an effort to educate todays generation, which is great, but it will take time of course. One can only hope it will improve but in the meantime we will continue to try and help the cats like the one that had it’s legs tied together and had been left to die by a Spanish family, or the 5 kittens we are currently fostering that a Spanish man dumped on the beach … he was seen doing it but just shrugged when confronted! Chris runs a expat blog about life in Spain (www.almerimarlife.com) and is a regular contributor to a number of publications and radio stations in Spain, as well as writing a monthly column for the Telegraph Expat site and is a Telegraph Expat guest blogger. happening here. If you are using an email program such as Outlook or Windows Mail then it maybe it is there that the problem lies. Do you get any kind of error message? If you save the received photo attachment to your computer and then send it in a fresh email does that work? Keep me posted.
Steve from Alfas asks: HI AUNTY, if as you suspect Gonuts4free discontinue their free Internet dialup service, how would I connect to the Internet? ADSL/broadband is not viable options for me and I have to use a conventional land line.
Aunty says: I’m still not totally sure if Gonuts4free are still operating their free dialup and email as they were, or whether there is any danger of them ceasing any of their free services at any time. Most of the emails I have received are concerning problems with the Gonuts4free email service and delays in customer support. I will look into whether any of the other internet service providers are still offering a free dialup in Spain and let you know.
Barbara via email asks: HI AUNTY, please can you tell me if the Canon PIXMA MG6150 will successfully print card of 300grms? I am going round in ever decreasing circles here. Aunty says: I’m pretty sure you can Barbara. I had the cheaper Pixma and I used to use the Canon Pro Platinum 300g paper which I got from ebay and it worked fine.
Cannot find photos on PC Les via email asks: DEAR AUNTY six months ago my old laptop had XP and I used to download photos from my Olympus digital camera merely by plugging it into a USB port. It would immediately respond with a popup window asking whether to copy or print etc. However my new laptop has Windows 7 and when I plug the camera in, the camera seems to acknowledge the connection to the laptop as both the laptop’s and camera’s operating lights flutter for a while, but there is no indication of what has happened and I can find no new photos anywhere on the PC. Anticipating it might need a new driver I have tried to locate a Windows 7 driver for the Olympus, but got nowhere. Aunty says: Hi Les. It is possible that your camera isn’t totally compatible with Windows7, but you may be able to view the contents of the camera’s memory card like you would a USB stick. Try going to ‘Start’ then ‘Computer’ and see if it appears as an extra drive that you can simply double click on and explore. If your new laptop has a digital card reader built in it maybe just as easy to pop the card out of the camera when you need to download your photos. If you email me the exact model of camera I can do some more research for you.
Uninstalling IE9 Colin from Quesada asks: DEAR AUNTY, just after Christmas I bought a new Acer laptop and I was receiving numerous messages telling me I should download Internet Explorer 9. I didn’t bother for a while but eventually gave in and did the download. I now seem to be bombarded with flashing adverts which are a complete pain in the proverbial. Can you tell me how to uninstall IE9 and revert back to IE8?
resolved is to go to ‘start’ ‘control panel’ then ‘programs’ and ‘uninstall a program’. Selected ‘view installed updates’ and then scroll down until you see IE9. Uninstall it and restart your laptop and you should be back with IE8.
Aunty says: You’d imagine the System Restore function would do this Colin but it doesn’t seem to work properly so there’s an obvious problem with IE9. The only way I have seen this

GADGET INSPECTOR
Gadget Inspector investigates the case of: Girls’ Gadge THIS WEEK the Inspector is redressing the balance after looking at boys’ toys by finding some suitable gadge for the girls – and no sniggering at the back Holdsworth, we will not be featuring any objects with the same name as a small fluffy animal with big ears. Traditionally it has always been assumed (wrongly) that mainly men are obsessed by gadgets too technical or not interesting enough for the ladies. But manufacturers now realise that women have just as much interest in and demand for not only the high-tech gadgets such as phones and computers, but also advanced versions of the more basic everyday devices. As gadgets such as the iPhone have already been covered previously in this column, we will take a look at advances in what would be classed as more traditional, mainly female devices – and yes, it is appreciated that there is a blurring of this distinction in our modern unisex world… First off we have the T3 Evolution hair-dryer by Bespoke Labs at a hair-raising €210. This is not your average barely-disguised blow-torch capable of scorching scalps at 5m, but the
ultimate in super-speed, frizz-fighting, hairprotecting hair-drying technology. According to the manufacturer, the T3 Evolution uses tourmaline-infused ceramic components to emit maximum negative ionic and far-infrared energy. The result is the elimination of frizzy and damaged hair, and hair drying 70% faster than a standard hair dryer, whilst still managing to be lighter than most handheld hair dryers weighing in at a feathery 13.5 ounces. The dryer has 2 speed/heat settings that allow control of the airflow depending on hair type and hair style. Also there is an ingenious ´Cool Shot´ function that locks your style in place with a burst of cooled air. Quiff-tastic! And now to the Diffus Design Solar Handbag – price yet to be announced. This high-tech advance in kitchen-sink-carrying apparel has 100 photovoltaic (PV) cells adorning its exterior. These absorb UV light and convert it to usable power to recharge your phone or MP3 player right inside the handbag; even capable of working on a cloudy day. And use of this self-contained power
source doesn´t stop there: when the bag is opened the integrated fibre optics light up to help you locate items with ease – that vital, errant object will never again lurk in the depths un-discovered. The Inspector´s Verdict: Sure, some manufacturers still think just colouring their otherwise un-interesting products pink and
giving them a soppy name will make them sell in droves to the fairer sex. Good luck to them, they´re going to need it. Others, like the makers of the products above, are realising this is a mistake and tailoring products for the more savvy 21st Century woman. God help me if Mrs Gadget ever replaces the rolling pin with a Taser…

Hearing loss and treatment
by
Trevor Smith RHAD FSHAA of Premier Hearing Services
AS WE grow older many people begin to experience hearing loss. This is a natural part of the ageing process and develops gradually over time. Already at the age of 20, we have lost the ability to perceive some of the sounds that infants can hear. By the time we reach 30 or 40, subtle, but significant, losses may have begun to occur. With the added factor of prolonged exposure to high intensity noise at work and home, hearing impairment is increasingly common at an earlier age. Even slight hearing loss can have a negative impact on your ability to work, socialise and enjoy life. Once we reach our 70’s and 80’s more than half of us suffer from significant hearing loss. Many of us do not notice the early signs of hearing loss because we slowly adjust to the change. By the time we realise what is happening, we may have already lost the full appreciation of sounds and music we once enjoyed.
TYPES OF HEARING LOSS 1) Conductive hearing loss This occurs when the external and middle ear can no longer conduct sound into the inner ear. One of the most common causes of conductive hearing loss is a blockage in the external ear canal, typically caused by earwax build up or infection. Most cases are temporary and can be corrected with proper medical treatment. 2) Sensorineural hearing loss Often successfully treated with hearing aids, this type of loss may result from: Damage to the sensory cells or nerve fibres of the inner ear Exposure to diseases like mumps, meningitis, multiple
sclerosis or acute Grave’s disease Use of certain drugs like aspirin, cisplatin, quinine or the antibiotics streptomycin and gentamicin Your mother contracting rubella (German measles) during pregnancy Genetics Head or ear injuries 3) Mixed hearing loss This is a combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. This type of loss may be treated with a combination of medical assistance and use of a hearing device. 4) Degrees of loss Hearing loss affects everyone differently, and it varies from person to person. The medical community recognises four levels of hearing loss: Mild hearing loss - Soft sounds are hard to hear. Understanding speech clearly in noisy environments may be challenging. Moderate hearing loss - Soft sounds and moderately loud sounds are hard to hear. It is often difficult to understand speech, especially when there is background noise. Severe hearing loss - Some extremely loud sounds are audible, but hearing normal sounds without a hearing instrument is impossible. Profound hearing loss - Some extremely loud sounds are inaudible. Communication without a hearing instrument is impossible. TREATMENT If your hearing care professional audiologist diagnoses a hearing loss, he or she will then discuss
the treatments available. One of the common treatments of hearing loss is a hearing device. Research on people with hearing loss and their significant others has shown that hearing aids play a significant factor in a person’s social, emotional, psychological and physical well being. More specifically, treatment of hearing loss has shown to improve the following: Communication in relationships Intimacy and warmth in family relationships Ease in communication Earning power Sense of control over your life. Social participation Perception of mental functioning Emotional stability At their most basic, hearing aids are microphones that convert sound into electrical signals. An amplifier increases the strength of the signal, and then a receiver converts it back into sound and channels it into the ear canal through a small tube or ear mould. A battery is necessary to power the hearing aid and to enable amplification. Today’s hearing aids are sophisticated state of the art instruments that require computer programming to adjust to your specific requirements and life style and listening environments. They are vastly more effective, discreet, and comfortable than the hearing aids of past generations. Hearing loss treatment is a simple process that can put you back on the track to better hearing. When you consider all of the benefits of better hearing, you can see that hearing aids hold great potential to positively change your life.

Home care for everyone Part 2
LAST WEEK we told you about RTN’s first visit out with Nurse co-ordinator Paula Reed and some of her nurses from Anneke Integral Care Services (AICS) Group. Paula and her nursing team are one part of the AICS Group, which also runs the first-rate nursing home called Anneke Residence in Alfaz del Pi. Paula has been with AICS for six years. She and her team provide professional home care service based on the Dutch model, whereby a team of qualified, multilingual nurses and nursing assistants guarantee a very high standard of homecare to chronic patients, elderly people with specific needs, the disabled, post-operative treatment patients and terminal patients. In fact anyone based in Costa Blanca, whether in a house, hotel or campsite can use the homecare services of Anneke Integral Care Services, the largest care organisation offering its services on the Costa Blanca, covering the whole region from Denia to Torrevieja under its banner ‘Home care for everyone’. Paula explains: “Our team focuses on the personalised care of patients in their personal and family environment, usually their home. Many of our patients wish to remain in their own home for as long as possible and quite often this can contribute to a quicker recovery, and it certainly boosts and maintains the patient’s independence. “We work as a team. As well as keeping meticulous patient
notes, we hold a monthly team meeting, or more often if necessary, to discuss each of our clients in great depth: how they are, how things can be improved, if we have any concerns. We also work to support each other when we have any really unwell clients. If we cannot come up with solutions then we can rely on our colleagues at the Anneke Residence for support, by asking advice from the nurses in the home, using their equipment, summoning the physiotherapists or the psychiatric nurse, or any of the other specialists. And of course we work with the doctors in the community and through the seguridad social.” Paula continues, “We often care for many clients whose close families live in England, Germany or Holland. We keep in touch with them by email or if more urgent issues arise then by telephone, so they can be assured that their loved ones are being cared for. And we don’t just help older people - we will help anyone of any age. In fact just recently I have been caring for an eleven-year-old boy recovering from surgery”. For our second visit to meet with one of their patients, RTN visits Ken and David who have lived for 24 years in Calpe. They are 75 and 83 years old respectively, and David is not at all well, suffering from bi-polar depression, and recently having had a fall. “If it was not for the nurses and Dr Hendricks and our
37
cleaner I would truly not be able to cope,” says Ken, who continues, “I am extremely grateful to them all - they are absolutely wonderful.” “Immediately after David fell we were coming twice a day to care for him,” explains Paula. “Because we are a nursing team of nine nurses we can increase or decrease the visits as necessary. Believe you me we cover many miles and miles, shooting up and down the Coast taking care of our clients.” Pictured at the back are L to R: Nurses Karen (four years with AICS), Christa (15 years with AICS) with Ken, and in the front are Corrie (four years with AICS), David, and nurse coordinator Paula Reed.
If you need nursing care for yourself or one of your loved ones you can contact the Anneke Integral Care Services HQ on 96 680 7844. This is a 24-hour telephone number. More information on the services can be read in English at www.annekeresidence.org and www.thuiszorgspanje.com
A dream comes true More bricks for AFA for one supporter! GILL GIBSON from Mazarrón is coming up to her 65th birthday and her partner, Mike, decided that this is the time to make one of her dreams come true. So she’ll be jumping out of an aircraft from 15,000 feet! Not everyone’s “dream” but Gill is up for it, she says: “It is a tandem jump where I hitch a ride on the back of an experienced skydiver – I haven’t got the nerve to do it on my own. And my son, Glen, who is 38 years old, is also doing the jump with me. It’s now or never – and it might as well be now!” The date of the jump is Friday, 26th August 2011 with SkyDive at Hibalstow Airfield, near Brigg in Lincolnshire (weather permitting). Gill is already in the UK, getting herself fit for the awesome task ahead. This was a last-minute surprise, so Gill didn’t have much time to get sponsors for her jump before she left for the UK and is now on a hectic schedule to get fit for the big day. As she is jumping in aid of Spanish Charity MABS Cancer Support Group, she’d like as many people as possible to support and

The air-conditioning was working flat out to keep pace with all the warmth being generated by this very generous group who are supporting the project, many of whom had already been part of Buy a Brick, with their names as individuals, so it was especially lovely to welcome them. A vote was taken to see what this particular coffee morning should be called and after much deliberation it was decided that the magnificent sum of 60€ should be dedicated to “The Monday Chatterers”, as that is what they are really good at. In fact, ‘The Coffee Morning’ finished at 4pm! So, you can see how appropriate this nomenclature is.

Calling card MANY PEOPLE happily go through life thinking that a set of coincidences has seen them through. The Spiritualist has already realised that in fact there is really not much evidence of this coincidence, but that Spirit have made things possible all along the way for them. Those who currently inhabit the Spirit World have a brief to help us whenever and however they can, and they clearly do the very best that they can under the restricted circumstances they operate under. Faith in them and subsequently belief in their survival really helps things so with a swing. They will make mistakes as any human, but then so will the living. Life on this Earth is one thing all who inhabit the Spirit World have encountered. They know how difficult life can be here on Earth because they have had the experience personally and now acquainted with life in a different format they look to making a difference for us. Many have told me that they thought that those in the Spirit World are sent to judge or to supervise us, and this simply isn’t true. Conscious care is the best way to help us, and this care is from people who have moved to the other side, survived and now are ready to help when and where they can. There is no interference when guidance is sent from the Other Side, and it is backed with tender love and care. Often this form of guidance is picked up strongly by me during an appointment and I will be in a position to pass on specific guidance to my client direct from Spirit. Many will greatly value the contribution that the Spiritual connection can bring; especially when loved ones come through to help situations. Spirit will require to be asked, since they are mindful that interference is never welcome, and fully aware that they have left their Earthly life behind. Some clients have been hesitant to make a connection believing that the dead are sleeping and that they shouldn’t be disturbed. If this was true I would be out of a job and wondering if I had been talking to myself all these years! Spirit often chooses to communicate with us in other ways. Guidance can come safely

through in dreams, when Spirit tuition is at a premium. I have the experience to be able to accept messages and visions while I am conscious, but for the great majority, if fear were to enter it may spoil subsequent and necessary contacts with the Higher Realms. Many report flashing lights and electrical disturbances as loved ones come through. Smells are common too, often very aptly connecting with a characteristic of the dear departed. For weeks after her death my Mother decided to send me her favourite perfume, which was Joy by Jean Patou. I actually can well remember going into Selfridges to ask someone in the Perfumery Hall what smell it was hanging around me, and they were able to tell me, though I did get some very funny looks. Many people are awaiting contact up there in the Spirit World. For many, contact will never be possible because there is no member of the family with enough faith to want it. Fear stops so much happening! Belief is needed to make the initial contact. Clients have told me that they have dreamt of loved ones, seen them sitting on the end of their bed and had whispered conversations, or at least their mane called out. You would think that these obvious calls from the Spirit World are to confirm survival of loved ones and to start the ball rolling. However this won’t happen if nobody in the family takes it on. I wonder how many silent messages of love are sent Earthbound by Spirit, and how many Earthly messages are sent to the Spirit World? You do not need a Medium to make contact, but we can make a difference. All is done is that a spiritual calling card is sent, and specific contact can, and is, made by many. The lighting of a candle can help, but nothing is so attractive to the Spirit World than a message of love; then, and only then can Spirit reply in the knowledge that someone has faith in them. I wish you luck in your contacts. Many messages are exchanged daily with much love and respect passing from this World to the next, and vice versa. Let know how you do, you will never know if you don’t try!
Love & Light... Kenny Corris
postbag Email your letters to me at: kennycorris@roundtownnews.com KENNY, I am so scared of coming to have a reading with you. My Father may come through, and he hurt me so much when he was alive I don’t want to hear from him ever again. I would love to contact my Mother because she brought me up virtually alone, and she died so young. What can I do? I am afraid that my parents will be together now. Fran Hi Fran. You do not have to make a booking for a physical sitting, but even if you did I would block any contact that your Father would want to make. In a reading I would be working directly with clairaudience and clairvoyance, and here too your Father could be blocked if you really do not want his connection. I strongly doubt that your parents would be together, but it is no problem to call your Mother only. I always put my clients in charge of the spiritual connections. I give them permission to leave the room if they are upset, but nobody ever has been. Also you can say STOP or NO at anytime, which a few clients have done on seeing those they do not want to come through. I will do my best for you, so please have no fear whatsoever.

horoscopes by Kenny Corris Here we go round the mulberry bush as this week reveals some secrets and lies. Someone is being economical with the truth at the moment, but is unaware that you know what you do. Allow things to take their course for a while, but keep your silence until the time is right, and then you will get a good chance to turn all this around and to your advantage: fair is fair. Mercury conjuncts with your Planetary leader, Venus, as Leo hosts the actions and calls the shots. There is a newly found freedom for you, and this recent elimination of pressure is not before time. This week sees your loving and caring energies come to the forefront, where you are ready to be a shoulder to cry on, and a helping hand just when and where you are needed. Actions with Venus bring passion and intrigue into your life. You have held back for some time, but now is a time to release your true innermost feelings and receive the love you need. Any further actions are very much up to you, but the opening of your heart, and the connection with your inner self will come with time. Just enjoy what you have for what it is worth and don’t look back. Someone needs your tender love and care but is frightened to tell you the truth of what exactly has been going on. Non judgmental and used to giving good advice, you are a friend indeed; bit in this case you will have to start the ball rolling if you are to be effective in your administrations. Beware what you take on because there is far more to all this than you know. Hosting planetary actions with a wayward and retrograde Mercury and an inspiringly passionate Goddess of Love Venus, brings a wealth of opportunity to your schedule this week. With a clear action of communication and love and confidence on your side anything is possible, and you do love any opportunity such as this to be centre stage and out there in the limelight too. Chances are that twists and turns this week will bring you back to your senses, for it is sure that you have taken the wrong end of the stick. A friendship has yielded a complication which has inadvertently backfired on you, and fingers are already out and pointing. Since you are the innocent party then let it be known; after all when all is said and done we all make mistakes sometime. A crisis of conscience stops you well and truly in your tracks this week, and it is unsure what your next move must be. Stall for time, because you can, and realise that not everybody can be happy with your decision and that on this occasion you have to please yourself, and make a quick exit. Those who truly love and have your interests at heart won’t want you to suffer in anyway whatsoever. Anger within has forced you to make alternatives, but they so go against the grain that no solution appears feasible. Expect a turn in fortune this week when something previously lost to you comes knocking on your door. With Jupiter in your opposing sign of Taurus the way ahead looks rosy, but make sure you leave no stone unturned as you seek the truth from all directions. Good luck and fortune as Jupiter shines on and supports you and your every move. Something has had to change, and your version of the truth is accepted. With your sincere motivation and your insistence on the truth overcoming all, keep your options open and watch others lose their tempers, whilst you remain calm and cool and directive of what is yet to come your way. Change is on the cards, and this is a great time to fulfil plans and make onward reservations for travel and onward journeys. So long as these plans are brought about by you there is to be no problem, but ask yourself just who is going to be travelling at your side? This is a time to share your globetrotting and to take steps to travel further afield and to enjoy every minute of the experience! Uranus brings a delicate air to affairs of the heart this week. There is a game to be played here, but you are plain speaking and outward, and have no fear in expressing what it is that you really want to say. However there will be no going back, and you must be so sure that your actions are not conveniently misconstrued by someone who appears to be barking up the wrong tree. A financial warning that adjustments have to me made. Check all levels of expenditure to cover impending unexpected expenses on the horizon, and ensure that your money starts to work for you, not you for it! A tightening of the belt will see you through, but also take the opportunity to get the financial advice you need since it will involve better levels of income for the future.
If it’s your birthday this week... Take the plunge! Something that you currently fear could just be your salvation if you have hope, and open your heart to whatever should come your way on all emotional levels.

Word Ladders The key rule is that you must only change one letter at a time as you move from one rung to another, and the word you make must be a proper word! Therefore you may move from BATH --> BATS but not from BATH --> CASH because that changes two letters in one go which is not allowed.

Goio Photo Expo and Stompers Hot Jazz Vibes From The Costas by
Tony Poole
from www.vibesfromthecostas. blogspot.com
JAZZ PHOTOGRAPHER Gregorio “Goio” Villanueva is hosting an exhibition of his work, “Jazz Portraits 2007-2010”, during August at the artist caves in Rojales (probably the best kept secret tourist attraction in the area!). Goio is a familiar figure at the San Javier International Jazz Festival, and many other jazz festivals in Valencia and Murcia. On display will be photographs of some of the best national and international jazz artists who have performed live at concerts and festivals in Spain including legends like Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, and B. B. King. “From my passion for music and photography, I try to collect images of sensitivity, strength, serenity and enthusiasm,” explains Goio, “The synthesis of these unforgettable magical moments, I call ‘Musicgraficas’, a personal term that precisely describes the fusion of music and photography, and serves as a sign of my own unique work.” The exhibition is at the Sala Mengolero, Cuevas del Rodeo, Rojales (Alicante). The caves are sign posted “Cuevas del Rodeo” from various sign posts around Rojales
and Quesada. The cave houses are built into the sandstone hills, most dating back to the 19th century. The cave dwellings are now mostly used by craftsmen and artists to display and sell their wares. Live music shows are regularly held there, as are craft markets. To view some of Goio’s excellent work on-line, visit his web site at www.fotosdelconcierto.com or blog at musicgrafias.blogspot.com One of the hottest young New Orleans bands in Europe, The Bourbon Street Stompers, return to the Costa Blanca, September 3-6, joined by British saxophone and clarinet player John Maddocks. The seven piece band are from Essen, Germany, and were formed while they were all teenagers still attending school in 1993. They play classic jazz of the 20’s and 30’s typically from New Orleans and Chicago, refered to as ‘Hot Jazz’. Their playing is a tribute to the musicians who are widely recognised as creators of jazz; King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Clarence Williams, Johnny Dodds and Duke Ellington.

Peace, love and reggae By Julie Day THE ERAS de la Sal open-air theatre was filled with the sounds of reggae music until the early hours last Friday with the celebration of the Reggaevento Festival. People of all ages and nationalities joined together to enjoy performances from a number of local groups plus bigger names, in a night with good music, a good atmosphere and friendly vibes. Headlining the event was Joseph Cotton, with considerable fame and popularity in the UK in the 80s, who delighted the Torrevejense crowd in his second ever visit to Spain in his life – the first was at least 30 years ago! With over 1,000 visitors for the first ever festival in Torrevieja of this kind, the organisers, The Brainfood Soundsystem Asociación Cultural Reggae should be proud of their début event, which attracted reggae lovers from as far as Alicante and possibly even further a field.

Weekly Cabaret Dances at a great price! How many times have we wondered where to go when we really want to have a good night out dancing and maybe enjoy a great cabaret too? A lot of bars offer entertainment at this time of year but they have no dance area and often, you can’t hear the music for background noise anyway! Restaurants are usually calmer but they generally don’t have a dance floor or even entertainment! You could join a line dance, modern jive etc club (if that’s your scene) but, where are the good old fashioned “Dance nights”? Well, until now, they have been hard to find but a local venue has now launched a fabulous weekly Cabaret Dance on Saturday evenings and everything is in place to make it a great event to attend! The venue is simply fantastic with a big dance area, great stage, comfortable seating and easy access for all including disabled. The area is good too as it’s in a popular part of the region with a lot of activity close by and no parking problems. So, what about the entertainment? Well, Jukebox Promotions have been asked to manage every Saturdays event and to get the acts and entertainment together. Hot on the heels of their very successful tour events in the region, they certainly have the experience and knowledge to put on the right mix each week. “Time and time we are asked by people in the 50s to 70s + age group where can we go for a great night out dancing and enjoy a good cabaret too at a sensible cost” says Peter from Jukebox Promotions. Well, it is hard to find venues offering anything like it and so this is why the venue and promoters have come together to make it happen every Saturday throughout the year (yes, even when the summer is gone and other venues

stop offering entertainment and there’s nothing for ex pats to do)! The plan is to offer a different cabaret act over a six week cycle and also satisfy all types of dancing from general bop to rock & roll, Country, ballroom and so on. The project will launch on Saturday 20th August and will feature the fantastic Jukebox Legends with the exceptional Elvis cabaret “Elvis 2000”. This cabaret is especially suited to the date because it will be a special celebration of the 34th anniversary of Elvis passing on August 16th. So, this great night will kick off this new venture will also raise funds for Help at Home (Costa Blanca). So, fancy a great dance, fantastic cabaret and FREE table food at one of the best venues in the area for just 5 Euros entry? Well, why not get tickets and go? The place is AREA, The Filton Commercial Centre, Los Balcones and the three hour events will start at 8-30pm. Tickets are available at AREA now or you can call Gerhard on 608 908 720 or Jukebox Promotions on 695 135 134 or visit www.jukeboxpromotions.co.uk for more information. It may be possible to pay on the night at the door but pre booking is advisable and will help with food preparation! A full list of acts and performers for the remainder of the year will be released soon. So put on your “blue suede shoes” or black ballroom attire and get yourself down to AREA on Saturday nights from 20th August. “We really hope this is supported and received well because then it will continue right through the winter when people are always complaining because there is no entertainment on and nowhere to go” says Peter!

Two and a half Wimps
Showbiz Goss by
Peter Taylor
Writer and Broadcaster
I
t’s well documented about Charlie Sheen´s acrimonious departure from Two and a Half Men earlier this year, and to a much lesser degree the news of his replacement Ashton Kutcher ( who?). The new guy is not a Charlie look a like and the producers are not trying to slip him in without anybody noticing, but I have to say that the information at the time of writing as to what his role will be in the show continues to be pretty scant. To bring you up to speed, one of the main issues surrounding Charlie´s demise was his criticism of the crew of the show saying “there was no air, laughter, loyalty or love on the set of the sitcom “. I´ll give you one guess as to what you think has now happened. Yes, the very same crew are saying that new boy is, and I quote “a Diva! “ whatever that means, and they´ve got there on the back of what they call his ‘two storey mansion on wheels’, the description they gave to the trailer he has been given to use whilst filming the new series. Charlie is long gone from the show so it’s not about the crew marching around the film set with placards saying ‘Bring Back Charlie’ but the future of the show is in grand doo doos, as added to the Mega Trailer issue is the fact that the back room boys have also found out that DivaMan will earn 20 million dollareenos for his work on the series. Two and a Half Men well so worked because the character Charlie played was him in real life, and as I see it, the only real chance Ashton Kutcher has of making it happen is if his character is based around a pampered rich kid. New series due out in US on September 19th and the UK late autumn.
Damp Squib In the middle of this month the almighty yawn that is Celebrity Big Brother takes to the screen on Ch5 and there are endless streams of ´C ´ list folks bustin their butts to be part of this dreadful programme. The latest exciting roommate for us to all go giggly over is Pammie the Baywatch Boobjob lady who said “ I am very excited about the show and will just be myself and have fun with the contestants in the house” yeh! Ok Pammie just schlapp those balloons about a little too often babe and watch all the other felines jump all over you sweet pea. Talking of other felines Kerry Katona and Amy Childs are also expected to join the proceedings, with the latter apparently happy to shoot herself in the foot by quitting The Only Way is Essex to do it. The concept of Big Brother is good; what’s wrong with the show is that the level of expectation generated during the build-up falls a long long way short of the mark.
What! No More Macho Men Holly Valance who was Flick Scully in Neighbours in 2000, then had a No 1 Single Kiss Kiss in 2003, has landed a role in a new movie alongside Liam Neeson called Taken which she is beside herself about, but this item is more to do with the way Holly has found to pay her mortgage, her words not mine. She is to front the new TV ad campaign for Fosters Beer, based on her love of the golden ale, yes the lovely Holly is a huge fan of
Brother Grimm Book Review by
Danny Collins
copy@dannyjpcollins.com
Every so often I read a book that is so spellbinding it goes back on my shelves for my future enjoyment and that of my friends. Among these ‘diehards’ are classic works by Stephen King, the Harrises: Robert and Thomas, Khaled Hosseini, Indra Sinha, Hisham Matar, Paulo Coelho, Patricia and Bernard Cornwell, Tony Geraghty, Michael Crichton, and Lee Child. It’s a catholic list in which each author wins his place by creating a work that, during those few days of reading, became literally ‘unputdownable’ – that strange hybrid word that is so over-used by reviewers nowadays. A new addition to those worthies this week is Craig Russell, whose second book in his Jan Fable thriller series is a literary stunner. Fabel is a high ranking German policeman heading Hamburg’s Mordkommission. Russell has a long-standing interest in all things German and introduces his readers into the efficient world of obermeisters and the Stupol effortlessly until one feels comfortable going into buildings with names longer than their front fence. But the beauty is in Fabel’s team; a snap, crack, and popple unit of male and female cops who are fast on the trigger and fear no situation, no matter how gruesome – and gruesome they are in Brother Grimm. A serial killer is recreating the scenarios of Grimm’s fairy tales with chilling reconstructions that leaves
a courting couple posed as Hansel and Gretel dead in the woods with their throats slashed, and an eyeless corpse clutching the cut hair of a previously murdered supermodel in the gory retelling of Rapunzel. The forensic detail echoes Patricia Cornwell and the investigation techniques are as authentic as those practised in Ed McBain’s 87th Precinct. The plot is deep and the killer horrifyingly hidden throughout with enough red herrings to satisfy the most dedicated sleuth. This is Russell’s second Fabel novel. His first, Blood Eagle, already has its place reserved among my classic thrillers of the year. Author: Craig Russell Publisher: Arrow (paperback) Price: 11.20€ ISBN: 978 0 099 48422 6

swigging a tinnie or twenty down her local pub. “My friends laughed their butts off when they found out “said Holly. We are genuinely happy for the girl that she can now pay her mortgage, but the question we must now ask ourselves is, has Fosters truthfully moved away from all that died in the wool maleness we have grown to know and love when it comes to the drinking of the world famous Aussie brew.

Marbella’s Night of Stars
It’s all inclusive ANTONIO BANDERAS and Eva Longoria hosted a glamorous and starlit occasion in Marbella on Saturday to raise funds to improve education and quality of life in communities for needy families and underprivileged children. Eva Longoria was accompanied by her new love Eduardo Cruz, brother to Penelope Cruz. Also attending were Ane Igartiburu and Joseph Fiennes, who stage-managed an auction throughout the dessert course. Banderas, accompanied as always by his wife Melanie Griffiths, wielded his usual charm and spoke with delight of his latest role as ‘Robin Hood’- taking from the rich to give to the poor!
Anyone who flies these days is becoming more and more aware of added extras, whether it’s the extra people in the taxi to the airport, the extra charge for the bags at the airport or even the extra charge to use your phone abroad, how nice then to be all inclusive. I’m a great fan of all inclusive but probably for all the wrong reasons. Some companies would prefer that you stay in the resort, full time just to encourage you to spend your holiday money with them. They source their produce and staff from outside of the local area and therefore contribute very little to the local economy apart from all the rubbish that is left, locally. However, on the odd occasion when we have decided to go away at no more than a minute’s notice we have found that sometimes an all inclusive last minute deal is more economical than booking the individual components separately. As up to 73% of hotel guests prefer to eat out its no surprise that companies will do anything to encourage you to eat in. We have even been advised about the dangers of eating out, “It’s not very safe to go out after dark,” or, “The locals don’t like tourists very much,” as well as, “Don’t eat from the street markets as they are unsafe.” If the word ‘market’ is not enough to get our
skates on then one look at the buffet on offer is usually enough for us to head off out, on the streets, street surfing. Whilst I am a fan of the local tourist office its better to ask specific questions on what you are interested in or particularly looking for as well as picking up brochures for later. For us it’s got to be food, preferable a market and the name of a good local chef who uses it. For us the best local tour guide is a decent chef who knows the local area and the best food stops. Trips to both Mauritius and Egypt have each resulted in getting to know good quality local head chefs and their teams who ended up cooking an authentic meal, on the beach, at night over a real fire and both on their days off work. Pillow bread and whole fish Tabouleh followed by Um Ali, a goat’s milk rice pudding or a fiery Mauritian curry. Was it good? Absolutely. Was it fresh? Without question. Were they showing off their skills to a likeminded fellow cook? Of course. No printed cook book could ever match the overall experience of being there, up close and personal. No computer can recreate the wonderful aromas, the warmth of the fire and the excitement of all of those people present whether you were taking part or not.
One major difference between chefs and others is when we get together and are asked if there is “anything we can do”, we almost always answer yes there is, from peeling prawns to gutting fish, chopping chillies to whipping cream and from lighting the fire to getting a cool beer from the fridge. So if you are lucky enough to be invited to eat at a chefs place, remember we do like the opportunity to show off a bit so don’t dress up, you’ll probably get mucky, expect to take part in not only the eating part of the evening and remember we alone know what its really like to go all inclusive.

GOOD AFTERNOON Brian: Just read your column in RTN - informative as usual. However I am slightly confused. Last year I changed my UK licence for a Spanish licence at which point I had a medical - will this be okay until I am 70? The confusion is with this ‘3 by month only’ statement on the certificate relating to Spanish licence holders - or do they mean Spanish nationals? The other grey area is notification. Author of Motoring in Spain If you are a Spanish licence holder do they notify you when the licence is due for renewal or when another medical is required? Hope you are able to help, I do appreciate that Spanish Law appears to change every other week! Regards, John Philpott
Brian Deller
AS EXPLAINED in my book, the Spanish DL expires and it is noted on the card when
a medical is due so please take a look at the classifications column on your DL and the date in 4(b) near the photo on the front for expiration information. Unless they have recently changed the system to save costs, you should receive an aviso (advice) about a month before the medical is due, but having just taken my medical two weeks ago, I went in early and have still not received an aviso letter - and I took the medical now done in the clinic with the photo taken simultaneously (the medical is at a greater cost than in the past, probably to pay for the new online system), perhaps the Trafico PC system has not generated an aviso as the medical has now been taken. Incidentally, the UK DLs expire every 10 years for a photo change. I wonder if any expats are driving around not realising this thinking that their UK DL expires at age 70 but as we know, any EU DL used
by any expat resident in Spain expires automatically if the periodical medical is not taken according to the Trafico rules. My big concern at the moment is the proposal that EU drivers be banned from driving at a set age regardless of whether they are fit or not. In the UK it has been mentioned in Parliament that the age be set at 80 years. And we see in the UK Press reports of drivers 65 to 85 having bad accidents as if to support the proposal. But by introducing the periodical medical system there, as here, any set age could be avoided purely on medical fitness to drive. Sneaky people politicians, but then many are lawyers... It is amazing though that there have been no letters in the UK Press objecting to this and it will be too late when a law is passed. Human Rights discrimination? I would say so…

Keeping below the radar RTN DRIVERS in Alicante are warned that radar is being installed along major roads into the city. Devices have already been put up in road links from Denia and Villajoyosa and into James I and Goleta. Not only do the German tech cameras pick up speeding motorists, they also capture images of vehicles ‘jumping’ traffic lights in glorious detail and 10.7 megapixels. However, it is thought that the radar devices will not be operational until the autumn. The National Centre of Metrology is to carry out tests on the radar units before they are pressed into service. Drivers skipping lights will be caught via the use of induction bands buried in the pavement. Those travelling at the proper speed will be skipped but over 50kph will result in fines ranging from 50€ to 600€. This summer there are also camouflaged devices at the Parque Via area.

Making the grade RTN Golf Club update Golf Course
Dennis Jordan NORTH REGION Sweeney (centre) with Mike and Lawarence
By Jack Troughton KARATE STUDENTS Lawrence Halls and Mike Hopkinson travelled to picturesque Milton Abbey in Dorset to win coveted black belts after four years of training. The teenagers both attend the Laude Lady Elizabeth School and their grading was witnessed by more than 100 karate instructors and black belts. Both aged 17, Lawrence, of Calpe, and Mike, from Lliber, are both members of Club Deportivo Washinkai, with over 150 students it is the largest karate club in Alicante. Principal instructor Ray Sweeney said the pair had trained with Sarah Lakin for over four years to reach the level of ‘Shodan’. “A big part of the exam was a written essay of more than 750 words, given one month before the physical exam, in order to demonstrate their mental aptitude to take part in the physical exam,” he said. SPIRIT “In the gruelling physical part of the exam, they had to demonstrate their physical and mental qualities and show the strength of spirit they had forged in the ‘Shoygyu’, ascetic and austere training, of karate.” The grading was carried out by Chris Thompson, technical director of the English Karate Federation, and Lawrence and Mike will be registered with the Spanish, English and Japanese karate federations, so their black belts will be recognised worldwide. Club Deportivo Washinkai is the municipal karate club of Javea and Benitachell and regularly runs training sessions in the two communities and Lliber. It will soon open in Ondara. For more information about the club and its summer classes call Ray on 637 564 416.

JUST HOW hot has it been over the last week? The courses are relatively quiet and it is clear that the long hot summer is taking a toll on the courses which are in good condition but need huge amounts of water to keep them looking like this and a number have resorted to pumping water from water hazards on the greens and fairways. There have been no new announcements of summer deals and so those detailed below and in the price table are the best available to you. At Las Colinas for play between 7.24am and 8.12am the price for 2 players and buggy is only €78 and for single players the price is only €39 PLUS you can have a buggy for only €5 extra. Vistabella are still offering their 50% discount terms for repeat games offer but this offer expires at the end of August. The deal at La Finca of only €164 for 4 players and 2 buggies continues to be popular as does the deal at Altorreal at only €55 for 2 players and buggy.
THE GLORIOUS Valencian countryside was the setting for the Hound’s latest escapade this week, as I travelled to the course at Font del Llop, the newest course in the MurciaGolf. co selection. After using the excellent driving range, my excitement built as I was ready to play a new course! There was a links feel to the course with plenty of elevation change brought about by heavily undulated fairways – this was a good test of one’s course management! The same applied for the greens, distance control was well and truly tested! After playing so well, there could be no better way to complete the day out than with some tapas and a drink in the fabulous restaurant. With stunning views of the course, this was also the perfect place for a quick snooze before heading home!

YOUNG MOTOR cross rider Joe Lester, 15, from Alfaz del Pi has moved up to MX2 Sub 25 this season, and raced at the first meeting of the season on Sunday 7th August in Alguazas in Murcia. Each meet consists of two races, and despite coming off his bike in the first race, Joe finished in fourth position. The Caddy: Too much influence? Noel’s world of golf By Noel Eastwell Teaching Professional Campo de Golf El Plantio 639 730 891
Early in July in response to questions asked by some RTN readers we addressed the issue of hypnotherapy in golf and its legality. Following that article where I tried to get across the message that some top golfers go into a trance like state when they are trying to win a championship, another question has been raised by a small number of readers. Has the professional caddy too much influence over his player? Every top player will tell you how important a good caddy is and how much he or she relies on him or her. Caddies have been around in golf for almost as long as the game itself. In the modern era they have perhaps become more prominent. Possibly because of the money they can earn from carrying a top bag, for instance Steve Williams has been rumoured to have earned over $16m from carrying Tiger Woods’s bag for ten years. The big thing about the modern caddy that many do not realise is that they spend a great deal of time with their players and know them practically inside out. They know their personalities better than the wives or girlfriends or husbands etc. It is for this very reason that they become an invaluable part of the golfers team. Not only this but they also spend countless hours with the players as they learn from their swing and mental coaches. This means that when the golfers are in highpressure situations the caddy is the most likely person to be able to get the players focus back on the job in hand. This will often mean getting the player back into the mental state he or she was in before something forced them to “break state” as a coach would call it. Some see this as a way of hypnotizing the player. I disagree with
this view entirely. A player is fully entitled to enter a state where his or her concentration is 100%, that is probably the only way they will win a tournament. Perhaps the best known golfer for this was Sir Nick Faldo who in his prime was accused of being aloof and in a world of his own on the golf course. This was the only way Nick could win in his opinion, there is nothing wrong with that. A little more focus amongst a certain number of our up and coming golfers may see them win even more than they do now. Win a round of golf for 2 including buggy at the beautiful El Plantio resort in Alicante To enter this competition simply answer the question below correctly. Every correct answer will be entered into a draw at the end of the month and the winner of this fantastic prize worth over 180 euros will be picked at random at the end of each month. Send your entries by email to golf@roundtownnews.com. The decision of the editor of Round Town News will be final in making the winning selection. Question for 12th August 2011: Who is the 2010 US PGA Champion? A. Martin Kaymer B. Paul Casey C. Charl Schwartzel All answers must be received no later than 5pm on 30th August 2011 to be entered into August’s draw, which will be made on August 30th. The winner will be announced in RTN on 2nd September 2011. Noel Eastwell Golf Academy at El Plantio Top quality coaching at reduced rates for RTN Golf Club members, contact Noel on 639 730 891.
Any questions you have for Noel should be sent to golf@roundtownnews.com
