Home a loan by Jack Troughton DESPERATE EXPAT Mike Kemp continues to battle with Barclays despite the bank refusing to take responsibility for issuing a mortgage on his illegal home. The former politician and company director was granted a 100,000€ mortgage by the banking giant’s Spanish wing in 2005 – only to find he had purchased one of an estimated 1,200 outlawed dwellings in Catral, Alicante. Mike went to Barclays because he believed the multinational would carry out stringent checks before advancing money – and holds the main board of directors in London ultimately responsible for the “illegal mortgage”. And he has just received an “unsatisfactory” explanation from Barclays – the first reply “from anyone in authority in the UK,” despite sending a string of letters to directors and a ‘one man’ demonstration outside the bank’s annual general meeting last year. Barclays spokesman Alan White said the mortgage was issued based against the certificate provided by the technical architect engaged by the vendor and developer of the home. He said: “This clearly demonstrates that the property was over five years old at the time of purchase, and therefore the property complied with one of the main requirements of Spanish property law, in order to be legalised. BANK
Horns of a dilemma TORO AND ‘toromentor’ ended up in the drink after this display of aerobatics at the traditional Javea fiesta of ‘Bous a la Mar’ this week. The aim is to commit the bull – actually a heifer in this photograph – to a charge that ends with the animal toppling into the sea. Part of the celebrations of the Virgen de Loreto, the horns were very close when the antagonist needed to take swift evading action.
“As such the Bank has acted in accordance with Spanish law, and the bank cannot be held responsible for any inaccuracies contained within the certificate. “In the light of the foregoing conclusion that Barclays was not responsible for the classification of your property, you may wish to bring matters to the attention of other parties responsible for the details provided at the time of sale.” He said the complaint was fully investigated from the UK. “The customer is not likely to like the resolution – he wants someone
to be responsible. Do I think it is Barclays? On this occasion I do not think it is.” Mike told RTN – and has replied to Barclays – with a document issued by the Mayor of Catral proving his home was not over five years old and was illegal. And he asked why Barclays took notice of a survey “which Barclays Spain arranged and I paid for” which clearly stated the house was illegal – as well as an aerial photograph showing now building existed prior to 2004 when the foundations were laid. Mike said since his story first appeared he had been contacted by other expats across Spain granted loans to buy property classified as illegal. BOARD “In America when there was the BP oil leak, the authorities did not go to the managing director in America but straight to the main board of directors in Spain – I am doing the same thing because I have had no satisfaction in Spain,” he said. He believes there has been a “cover up” in Madrid and holds the parent company ultimately responsible. “Banks outside of the UK should operate under the same rules of honesty, credibility and transparency.” Mike has already begun legal proceedings against Barclays in Spain. If successful he said it could “open the floodgates” of people taking action against banks in Spain. And he said if he was given “the run around” by the Spanish legal system, he had been offered financial backing to take his fight to the English courts. “These banks should not get away with virtually making people, some of them pensioners, bankrupt and causing them to lose all their life savings,” said Mike. “In my case if Barclays had done their job correctly I would not be in this position and I believe I was let down by corruption, greed and a flippant attitude when my mortgage was issued.”

San Miguel water supply by Louise Clarke THE GOVERNMENT of San Miguel de Salinas held an ordinary ‘pleno’ meeting yesterday (Thursday 1st September). Amongst the points raised at the meeting was the finalisation of the plans for the new water supply to the town. The government unanimously agreed to the re-classification of the land that will be used for the works to supply potable water to the urbanisations and it was decided that an extraordinary ‘pleno’ meeting will take place on 23rd September to discuss the tenders made by three companies who believe that they can supply the whole town with its water supply efficiently and economically. The Mayor, Angel Saez Huertas, refuted claims in the Spanish press that the water company would act as a private entity and told the meeting that the chosen company would work very closely with the Town Hall and would not be allowed to inflate water supply prices as had been feared by many San Miguel residents. He also stated that it would be necessary for all residents to be on the San Miguel de Salinas ‘padron’ before they can change their water supply over to the new company. So, if you live in the municipality, it is VERY important that you ensure that you are fully registered at the Town Hall.

7,000 volunteers for the Alicante Red Cross THE RED Cross has attracted more than 7,000 volunteers in the province of Alicante, a 10% increase over last year’s figure, with 30% of those volunteers being youngsters, said the health agency in a statement on Wednesday. The Red Cross is a leading humanitarian organisation in the province, attending 340,000 people so far this year. This number of volunteers, a total of 7,053, means that three out of 100 volunteers in Spain are based in Alicante. The balance of equality between men and women is a remarkable 51.2% and 48.8%, with one in 10 being of foreign nationality. Alicante Red Cross also has volunteers aged between 51 and 85 years, according to sources. Still more volunteers are called for.

Spanish Tourists queue to escape the Big Apple
Passengers at New York’s JFK Airport
by Jan Gamm SOME TWO hundred Spanish nationals crowded the concourse at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York on Monday and Tuesday after hurricane ‘Irene’ caused chaos in one of the World’s busiest cities, causing a mass cancellation of departures. Spanish consul Fernando Villalonga, who travelled to New York to offer assistance, said that on Monday between 150 and 200 Spanish passengers were removed from flights to make room for passengers arriving from the US West Coast. “It is chaos,” said Villalonga, speaking to EFE, “No date has been given for when they can fly and they have been offered no accommodation.” The Consul met with airline management in New York to try to confirm a departure date for Spanish nationals that hoped to be able to leave “within six or seven days.” The mood amongst delayed travellers was
said to be “tense,” while the Consul assured Spanish passengers that he would remain available at the airport. Passenger Tamara Gil said that little help had been afforded stranded passengers, other than to inform them on how to contact a ‘helpline’ that constantly emitted a busy signal. EXTORTIONATE Passengers were further angered by offers from Air Europa to fly passengers home before 4th and 5th September but only on ‘Business Class’ and at an additional and extortionate cost of US$1,500! ‘Irene’ hit New York on Sunday, downgraded to a tropical storm yet causing the closure of five airports serving the city on Saturday, prompting the cancellation of more than 10,000 flights. On Monday airports John F. Kennedy and Newark began accepting flight arrivals, while departures resumed at 4pm GMT.
Painting the town pink in Moclinejo SPAIN IS to host to the World’s first ‘gay village’ within the town of Moclinejo in Malaga. Characterised by craggy hills, olive trees, almond trees and vineyards, Moclinejo will soon have houses painted signature pink and welcome thousands of new residents with open arms as the World’s first exclusively gay community. The plans were announced this week by Javier Checa, the organiser of the International Fair Expogays, to be held in Torremolinos on 14th, 15th and 16th October. Existing street names are to be changed and named after famous gay artists and writers as part of the project to change the face of Moclinejo forever. The introduction of a totally gay community in the neighbourhood is seen as a possible solution to unemployment and the economic crisis in the area.
Villa Villains arrested by Louise Clarke FOLLOWING RTN’S exclusive story five weeks ago which told how dozens of innocent holiday makers had been left stranded by a couple raking in deposits from renters before scarpering with their money, RTN is pleased to report that the pair have been arrested by the Guardia Civil. CUSTODY John and Amanda Treagust of crooked holiday rental website Costa Blanca Live were arrested by officers on Monday morning at their current home in the mountains near to Mojacar in Almeria. The couple was taken in for questioning and Amanda was later released on bail, returning to the family home to look after their children. Her husband allegedly admitted to fraudulently obtaining money from holiday makers and home owners and was remanded in custody pending further inquiries by the investigating judge. It is believed that the couple has profited more than €10,000 from unsuspecting French, British and Dutch holidaymakers as well as denying villa owners their rightful rental income.
the four walls of a prison cell.” Ben personally located the couple at a small property in the mountains of Mojacar, whilst he was on his annual family holiday to the Orihuela Costa. He and a friend travelled to Almeria and confronted the pair who then promised him that they would pay him the money that they owed him within two weeks. Ben commented: “They underestimated me and as soon as I had confirmed with my own eyes that they lived at that address, I informed the Guardia Civil. They did pay me some of my money back, but not all of it. But the other victims will not be so lucky.” LEGAL There could be more victims of John and Amanda Treagust out there who are unaware of the legal process currently underway and Ben implores anyone who has had dealings with the couple to get in touch with the National Police in Orihuela, so that officers can add any further allegations to the case.
PRISON CELL Ben Ayad of Eskoriatza in the Basque Country owns a house in Lomas de Don Juan in Orihuela Costa and was a victim of John and Amanda Treagust. He was instrumental in the arrests of the pair after painstakingly tracking them down through internet forums and asking friends and business associates in the Mojacar area to help him locate the couple. He told RTN: “I am delighted that John Treagust is now looking at

Orihuela Costa car burglar nabbed A 35-year old man from Murcia was arrested last Friday in the area of La Glea beach, Campoamor and accused of carrying out a series of robberies in the coastal zones of La Zenia and Cabo Roig. The man targeted beach goers just after they had parked their car and set off for the beach, after which he would force a car door open and steal anything of value from inside. The Local Police of Orihuela Costa were aware of the robberies and set up a police surveillance, culminating in the thief’s arrest last week. The man was found to have numerous objects in his possession including ten mobile phones, several pairs of sunglasses of various brands, cash in several currencies, jewellery, car stereos, two GPS systems and 15 watches.

The long hot August UNTIL THIS year I found it difficult to understand why so many people returned to the UK for the summer. After this August I can fully understand their reasoning. by I have found the heat, and especially the humidity, very debilitating but, because of running my company I am of course unable to escape to dance in the rain! Instead, I have spent my time searching for cool spots to hide in: air conditioned cars or offices. I tried to find another place to live whilst down south, a rather stupid thing to do in August, but while doing this I have been made to realise one of the reasons why my company enjoys its well-earned reputation. I phoned various companies for a number of reasons - often they were busy or the person I needed wasn’t available. With promises to call back, they took my telephone number: I am still waiting for at least five calls to be returned. All of the people I contacted have advertised in the local press. If they are not going to bother to return potential business calls, why advertise? Or have they enough business and they couldn’t care less? If everyone in my company took this attitude, we would not deserve to be successful. When you are in business in Spain or anywhere in the world, you have to work extremely hard and always try and do what you promise to do.
Jennifer Cunningham
There are no second chances. I have spent nearly all of August in the Benijofar office and another issue I have observed is the number of companies selling house insurances that are not asking for enough details of the property. For example, clarifying the security measures; so important when it comes to paying out on a claim. How many retaining walls are there? Is there a pool? Also, the clients are not requesting full information on the cover offered. One company only insures thirteen items in the house! There is also a lot of ‘under insurance’, which may make the policy more economical, but when you have to make a claim you would only receive a ‘pro rata payment’ based on what the sum insured should have been. Spending more time than usual inside the house where the air con has kept me cool, I obviously watched the TV a lot more. What a dreadful month August has been as far as international conflicts and the UK scene, which we all I am sure watched with horror. To observe policemen and women hopelessly out of their depth for some hours was frightening. I kept comparing the situation with Spain and the Guardia! What a state the UK has created with the police terrified of litigation and being torn apart by the media. Lack of authority, disci-
pline and a total dependence on the state has left at least a generation completely unaware of the rules of reality and life. For some days after the horrific and unacceptable behavior of people setting fire and looting from hard earned businesses, I got really fed up with people discussing “why did it happen?” How did we let a whole generation turn into monsters? Why did the police act as they did? The sentences passed were either not firm enough or far too firm! How to stop it happening again… on and on it went… As far as I am concerned, it was just a matter of time. So much anger on all sides: the people, who work tirelessly every day and invest money in setting up their own business, must be wondering if it is worth it. When I think of all the beautiful dedicated young men/women dying in wars and all the thousands who gave their lives in the last world wars, I can’t help feeling very sad. What price for that wonderful word ‘freedom’. The minor frustrations I have experienced this August, to include most of the Spanish companies and legal profession closing for the whole month, is of little consequence, in comparison to, for example, living in Libya. Thank goodness it’s September now!

Conservatives Abroad
Mike Dolley
FRIDAY 16TH September, Conservatives Abroad will welcome a top Conservative Party campaigner to Spain to help to launch a new Conservatives Abroad branch in the Torrevieja/Orihuela Costa area. Mike Dolley is Deputy Director of Campaigning at Conservative Party HQ in London and he will be on a two day trip to this part of Spain, spending some time in the south of the region and guest speaker at a lunch in Benidoleig with members of the already well-established Jávea branch of Conservatives Abroad. There is currently no branch in the southern part of the region, so Mike wants to meet and give advice to prospective members. Political and social debate is encouraged around issues of importance both here in Spain and in the UK. If you have ever felt frustrated about not being able to discuss things that are happening politically then Conservatives Abroad provides that forum. Those sympathetic to the Conservative Party back in the UK and interested in starting up and supporting a new Branch in the Vega Baja are cordially invited to meet with members of the association at the Asturias Restaurant in Punta Prima (on the N332) at 12:30 on Friday 16th September. Mike Dolley will be accompanied by officers of Conservatives Abroad Jávea (north of Alicante) who are sponsoring the new Branch. New by-law in Pilar prohibits prostitution and visual degradation of the town by Julie Day PROSTITUTION, SOLICITING, graffiti and the posting of leaflets in public areas are now all actions that can be sanctioned in the municipality of Pilar de la Horadada after a new by-law regarding citizen coexistence in public spaces was approved by all parties in a plenary session at the town hall last week. The main issues tackled in the meeting were to do with the visual degradation of urban areas; unlicensed selling; and the offering or demanding of sexual services in the streets. From now on, any acts that are detrimental to the coexistence of residents including the aforementioned and others such as racism, sexism and xenophobia, could be penalized and the perpetrators fined or punished. Councillor for Citizen Security, Francisco Lancharro stated: “We have a put in place a series of measures to
regulate and promote living together harmoniously and in the correct way and it is now possible to punish those actions that were up until now not regulated. This is necessary, and between all of us we have to care for the image of our town and its assets.” One of the main issues in the new by-law is the sanctioning of offering and soliciting sexual services in public areas, particularly in or near to zones where children might be located. “It is prohibited to offer, solicit, negotiate or directly or indirectly accept sexual services in a public place, especially when these actions take place The new in areas less than 500m away from urban centres, citizen residential areas or any place where children may coexistence be located,” said the councillor. by-law A number of complaints have been made to the was fully town hall regarding prostitution taking place at the approved in Mil Palmeras roundabout, an area which from now the plenary on will be monitored very closely. meeting
Opposition criticizes town hall for not hosting stage of La Vuelta in Torrevieja A SPOKESPERSON for Torrevieja’s opposition party, Ángel Sáez, has criticised the town hall for not applying to host a stage of the prestigious La Vuelta a España cycle race along with other municipalities such as Benidorm and Orihuela. He says a move such as this would have helped to promote the town in the national media and bring tourists to the area. Joaquín Albaladejo, spokesperson for the government and Provincial MP of Tourism, responded by first of all accusing Sáez of poor political tactics by repeatedly opposing any projects or actions that the town hall does or does not undertake. Secondly he stated that the fact that the race did actually pass through the town en route to the final of the second stage in Campoamor, meant that Torrevieja was able to benefit positively from the images shown at prime time on national television at zero cost and without forking out the 300,000€ it would have cost to host a stage of the race. In continuation, Albaladejo stated that the Diputation of Alicante, through its Costa Blanca tourist board, is already studying the possibility of hosting a stage in next year’s race, without impacting on the municipal coffers.
The end of free school transport By Julie Day TORREVIEJA’S DEPARTMENT of Education is on the verge of becoming extremely unpopular with parents of children who regularly take the bus to school as there is a possibility that for the first time ever a fee will be introduced to use this service. Municipal technicians are at present studying the necessary measures required to implement this proposal, which they know will be unpopular. The current economic situation together with the necessity to make cuts has forced the government to make this decision, although new councillor for Education, Daniel Plaza has stressed that “nothing has been finalised or decided.” The councillor was unable to give an idea of how much this service would cost if the plan to charge a fee goes ahead. Should the proposal be given the green light, the cost for a service used by thousands of school children within the municipality would be applied at the beginning of the coming school year, due to start shortly. The decision to charge for school transport follows the recent introduction of the new Citizen Card, which although allows free travel on local buses, includes a charge of 35€ to cover production costs.

IN ALICANTE nearly 800 foreclosures and releases in the first half of 2011 has tripled evictions through debt in the last three years with the numbers of families left homeless continuing to climb. The figures on foreclosures and releases in the province of Alicante, about 3,400 in all, show that nearly a dozen families are losing their homes every day through defaulting on their debts. In most cases the eviction is a result of not paying the mortgage. The city of Alicante, Sant Joan d’Alacant and Campello, have carried out 866 eviction orders and releases in the first six months of this year alone, more than three times the level of evictions of three years ago, when the figure for the same period was 247.
TORREVIEJA Torrevieja is the second largest city behind Alicante for eviction orders and releases, with around 600 notifications, while in the judicial district of Elche, the figure has reached 530. Denia issued about 200 – Benidorm 129. And although many of the evictions affect areas with a high concentration of immigrants and working-class families, more affluent cases are not unusual with embargoes issued for penthouses; luxury villas with fabulous sea views; farms… DOUBLED For Alicante, the number of foreclosures for the first half of 2011 has doubled since 2008 with more to come in a climate where it is almost impossible to obtain bank assistance for mortgage relief.
Ryanair cancels its route from Jerez to London Stansted
RYANAIR ANNOUNCED this week that it is to withdraw its Jerez to London Stansted service, the last flight available to be 28th October 2011. Ryanair’s Jerez service offered flights flies twice daily each way, with three flights on Saturdays and Sundays. There are also plans in the pipeline to shut down routes into Germany.
Home alone father charged with abandonment
The child reunited with his mother at the Guardia Civil barracks
by Jan Gamm A RESIDENT of San Vicente who left his three-year-old son ‘home alone’ while he visited the public library to borrow books and DVDs has been arrested and charged with abandonment. The Guardia Civil was alerted on Monday at about 11.30am by a neighbour of the family when she spotted the child alone on the balcony of the family’s apartment. She said she feared the child might fall, following the case a day earlier of a child that had fallen from a terrace in Rojales. Guardia Civil officers found on arrival that the outer door had been locked to prevent the child escaping, so accessed the
apartment with the help of the local fire service, by dropping a basket used for fire rescues through the roof. The child was taken from the apartment to the Civil Guard barracks. In the meantime, a local resident located the father at the local library in San Vicente, about 50 meters from the family home. The mother was working at the time. The man, a 28-year-old Venezuelan national, went to the Civil Guard barracks where he was arrested for abandonment of his son. The couple later said the child had not wanted to accompany his father but conceded the child should not have been left unattended.

Slim the Fast Track Way
by
Alan Gilchrist The Costa Blanca’s Top Hypnotherapist
‘YOU ARE feeling sleepy… very, very sleepy…’ is the catch-line that many people associate with the stage hypnotist, the watch-swinging showman with hypnotic eyes that could pierce a stone. The above statement is probably the most common perception that people have about hypnosis and hypnotherapy. It is certainly a mythical one and I have spent a lot of time over the last 25 years trying to dispel this myth. Stage hypnotists like to give the impression they are controlling a person’s mind. In fact, no one can be hypnotised against their will, or forced to do something objectionable. If such a suggestion were given to them they would come out of the Hypnotic state immediately. HYPNOSIS USED IN THERAPY GIVES PEOPLE more CONTROL OVER THEIR LIVES - NOT less! Another myth is that a person may be unable to ever come out of the Hypnotic state and remain ‘asleep’ forever! If that were the case there would be millions of bodies lying in a trance all over the world and we would all read about it! FAST TRACK HYPNOSIS My version of Hypnosis which I call ‘Fast Track Hypnosis / Hypnotherapy ‘ is used to improve a person’s general functioning - mentally and/or physically with great effect and to help correct a wide range of problems Hypnosis itself is only a state of relaxation with an altered state of heightened awareness. People are not treated with hypnosis but are treated in hypnosis! Whenever a person uses hypnosis the subconscious mind can then accept positive suggestions that in turn help them to alter past behavioural problems, such as phobias, stress, lack of confidence, etc, as well as sim-
ple ones to stop smoking, weight control, etc… Over the years a lot of people have come through my door who are sceptical about hypnosis in general and about my fast track Hypnosis system (even though I had proved it numerous times in the media) and that you don’t need to go for a series of sessions when only ONE session for the Stop Smoking, Weight control or the now very popular Gastroband will do. Here are a couple of testimonials that I received and how they felt before and after their session for their fast track weight session: “Dear Mr Gilchrist, I received hypnotherapy last March for a weight problem. At the time I weighed 151/2 stone and spent my entire life from the age of 16 on freak diets that failed to work long term. I consulted you as a last ditch - I didn’t believe that hypnotherapy could help me. However, as I had unsuccessfully tried just about everything else, it was all that remained. As I left your clinic after that session, I must confess that I felt no different from when I went in, although politeness prevented me saying so. From the morning following my hypnotherapy I found that somehow, I only wanted to eat sensible food! Sweet shops and bakeries might as well have been selling bits of wood - like magic, their hold over me was gone. I have to date lost 41/2 stone (28.6 kilos) by eating three sensible meals a day and snacking, if I feel I want to, on fruit or a slice of brown bread. Needless to say I am now a confirmed believer in the efficacy of Hypnotherapy. Gratefully, Mary.”
needless to say I’m delighted. I am a much happier person, and instead of worrying all the time, and much of it about things that didn’t concern me, I have a more relaxed approach to life. One thing that amazes but delights me is that having suffered for years with an imbalance of the inner ear for which I have been taking pills 3 times a day, I find they are no longer needed. Apparently there is no cure for this condition - only help- so how could this have happened? Visiting you was one of the more intelligent things I have ever done, even though I did so at the time tongue-in-cheek. How wrong I was! Thanks for changing my outlook about life. Load of rubbish EVER SINCE the council moved the skip to the other side of this waste land people have been tipping rubbish where it used to be. At first the council every so often would send a digger and wagon to clear it. However, for months now it has not been touched and on making enquiries we have been told that there is no money to do this. Surely they could put another skip there and once cleared it would stay that way. I don’t think they would like it if all the residents said they couldn’t afford to pay their Sumas? Dennis Barker

Illegal homes in Spain THERE ARE 3 million illegal homes in Spain, 1.5 million on the Costa Blanca and another 1.5 million over the rest of Spain. All the EU MPs from Britain, France, Germany, Ireland, Sweden and Holland are fighting for the affected homeowners in the European Parliament in Brussels. Most of these people are old age pensioners putting there trust in Spanish Lawyers who sold them illegal houses without their knowledge. Because of this they have to live without mains water and electricity. The EU MPs said the homeowners have paid out between 250,000€ to 300,000€ per home, multiply this by 3 million and the amount is in billions, more then any exports Spain has. And they are treated this way! Also they have their pensions coming in every month, 14,000€ to 20,000€ per year,
Please be aware of the thieves
ON THE Orihuela Costa we have had a number of thefts from cars left unattended near the beaches and handbags stolen from people using the beaches. I do not know if you have received a press release from the Policía Local regarding the arrest of a man responsible for a number of these crimes. If not, I would like to praise the actions of the agents of the Policía Local who were on cycle patrol on the beach at Campoamor and arrested the man responsible. This man was found to be in possession of a number of stolen items which amongst others included mobile phones, cameras, watches, sunglasses and perfumes. Anyone who has been robbed on or near to the beaches is asked to visit the Guardia Civil Cuartel at Torre de la Horadada to see if their property has been recovered. Although this man has been apprehended, please still be on your guard, especially when leaving cars unattended, don’t leave valuables inside and only take to the beach the items you need there and nothing of value. LOOK OUT – THERE ARE STILL THIEVES ABOUT. Best wishes, Chris Poole
multiply that with 3 million! The EU has said that the mains water and electricity is in there Human Rights which Spain has signed. For more information please email martaandreasen@europarl.europa.eu. and michael.cashman@europarl.europa.eu I can give you lots more, go to Youtube and watch the video of Marta Andreasen speaking to the Prime Minister of Spain. He was very ashamed of what has been done to the Citizens of other EU States. Just put yourself in the position of these honest people who are being treated this way. You go home to no mains water and electricity in your house which has cost you a lot of money. You would never have bought an illegal house if you had to. This is the biggest crime happening in Europe. Bob Dunford
So much support, thanks I WOULD like your paper to pass on my many thanks to some very good people. Since my husband died a few months ago, I have had nothing but support from the following people, who have helped to make an horrendous situation a little easier. My husband Maurice had a massive stroke in 2007 and remained severly disabled until his death. He was always made welcome in the Elite Bar in Almoradi and I would like to thank Sid, Jenny and Laura, the owners, together with their staff and customers for their kindness and understanding. Also Chris, Jason, Nicky and Chris, without whom I would have been lost. There are many other friends, too many to name, who have given me their support and also a word for Almoradi Social Services and the nursing staff at Casa Verde who cared for him during his final days. I know that words can be cheap and your paper gets a lot of complaints through its columns but I want to say THANK YOU ALL. Please print this in your paper if you have space. Susan Foster

Thought you would like to know! I HAVE just seen the edition of your paper for the 12th-18th August 2011 and in particular, the RTN motoring column by Brian Deller. At the end of his article, Mr Deller says his big concern at the moment ‘is the proposal that EU drivers be banned from driving at a set age regardless of whether they are fit or not.’ He goes on to say ‘in the UK it has been mentioned in Parliament that the age be set at 80 years.’ He then bemoans the fact that there have been no letters in the UK press objecting to this and says it will be too late when a new law is passed. In the light of these comments, I thought your readers would like to know that there is currently no proposal before the UK Parliament to ban people from driving over the age of 80 – or indeed over any particular age. There was some debate outside Parliament a few years ago about the EU Third Driving Licence Directive. This does not contain a maximum driving
age, but does say after the age of 70 one has to undergo medical checks every three years to ensure fitness to drive. Whilst I have no difficulty with people over 70 having periodic medical checks I, and many of my colleagues would find it both offensive and indefensible to ban people from driving just because they have achieved a certain calendar age. The power to impose a maximum age for the holding of a driving licence resides with each EU member state. I can assure your readers that so long as I am a Member of the British Parliament, should any Government be so misguided as to suggest such a proposal, it would be strenuously opposed. The good news is the present Coalition Government has not indicated any support for such a measure and thus, quite frankly, it is not on our agenda. I hope Mr Deller and his readers are therefore suitably reassured. Regards, Greg Knight

Awesome! by Louise Clarke SUPERLATIVES SUCH as “awesome”, “wicked” and “sick” (yeah, I don’t understand that one either!) were all that came out of my 11-year-old son’s mouth throughout the duration of last Friday’s Freestyle display at the Plaza de Toros in Benidorm. More than 3,000 people packed into the Bullring to witness star riders such as Joseph ‘Crazy’ Miralles (World Freestyle); Victor Cordoba (Runnerup Spain); Maykel Melero (4th in the Red Bull X-fighters de Madrid); Dylan Trull and Albert ‘Rocky’ Florenza show off their amazing skills with motor-cross motorcycles. GRAVITY As someone who couldn’t even do a ‘kerbie’ on their push bike as a child, what all the riders did during the event completely stunned me - not only were they “amazing” (another Charlie superlative) but they also defied the laws of gravity; with tricks such as full 360 degree turns, with and without hands to practi-
cally throwing the bike out of their way before grabbing it back and safely landing just yards away on the ramp. RISKY The ‘comedy slot’ featured the hilarious ‘Sir Hugo Arriazu’ and the Pitbike Threesome ‘The Rich, the Kanka and the Rangers’ who also performed risky and crazy jumps and back flips. The whole family left in complete awe of all the riders and it was a great night’s entertainment. As we left Benidorm and headed down south on the AP7, our son commented: “…that was the best two hours of my life!” (So it must have been good!) If you would like to see what Freestyle is all about, the annual Red Bull Freestyle competition can be seen on cable TV channel Dave every Wednesday at 8pm from next Wednesday, 7th September. Meanwhile, plans are under way to stage another Freestyle Show in Benidorm next summer. Keep reading RTN for more details.

Saharui kids visit San Pedro del Pinatar
THE SUMMER months in the Sahara desert region are unbearably hot with temperatures rising to above 55º, so each year the association Vacaciones en Paz sponsors some of the children from the Tinduf refugee camp in a remote part of Algeria, to take a welcome vacation in Spain. This year, San Pedro del Pinatar welcomed five of the children, hosted by Spanish families. The Vacaciones en Paz charity is very close to the heart of President Jane Cronin and members of the ADAPT Association. They met with Visitacion Martinez Martinez, the Mayoress, and Silvia Egea Morales, Councillor for Citizens Participation, at San Pedro Town Hall, and also with Nuria Mesa of Vacaciones en Paz to whom Jane handed over a cheque from ADAPT for 1,500€ to support them in their wonderful work. ADAPT members also brought smiles to the faces of the children, who range in age from 8 to 11 years, when they presented them with large bags of toys. ADAPT resumes after the Summer with a monthly meeting at Castelar College, San Pedro, starting 3rd September at 11am: www.adaptsanpedro.eu

Pilar reduces costs in police, agriculture and personnel by Julie Day THE TOWN hall of Pilar de la Horadada is taking measures to reduce municipal expenditure and save money after the previous socialist government’s “squandering” of funds when they were in power. First of all, the new team is set to reduce its staff by 20% by not renewing “unnecessary” temporary or casual contracts, whilst their secondary aim is to eliminate complementary payments to its workers, a cost which spiralled to €2 million under the previous government. In some cases staff were getting extra wages for tasks that they were not contracted to do. Others were paid too high a basic salary. Already this July and August, the busiest months of the year,
which sees an increase of population from 25,000 to over 1000,000, the Local Police have managed to reduce their expenditure by 55% by a simple restructure and reorganisation of its services. Overtime has been reduced and days off for personal matters and from the accumulation of hours has also bee restricted, resulting in spending 23,000€ this summer as opposed to 52,000€ last year. Councillor for Citizen Security, Francisco Lancharro explains: “The whole team has adapted perfectly to the new situation because they understand that our town hall will not permit any extra costs.” Finally, the town hall has changed its contract for the collection of agricultural solid Savings of 29,000€ waste, a move that will save have been 57,000€ per year. made
Nightmare for Rojales school ACCORDING TO a report prepared by the City of Rojales, under current construction regulations the Colegio Público Príncipe de España de Rojales does not comply with virtually any of the guidelines laid down relating to functionality and safety. The most serious shortcoming concerns the lack of adequate fire escapes. There are also shared toilet facilities for both sexes; inadequate exits; shoddy wiring; serious leaks and a danger of falling masonry in the corridors connecting classrooms. Significant structural deterioration has led to pupils being barred from certain areas. The septic tanks of neighbouring buildings empty brown waste into the games courtyard. And there is no fire alarm! The city’s report will be forwarded to the Department of Education.
Collection of Torrevieja’s new Citizen Card proves to be chaotic by Julie Day TO BE able to cope with the sheer number of people queuing up outside the old town hall in Torrevieja in order to pick up their new bus pass before 1st September, the department of Transport has announced the prolongation of the use of the old bus pass together with the extension of the office hours available to gain the new Citizen Card. Torrevieja residents can now use their current bass pass until Sunday 18th September, as the following day, Monday 19th September, the new Citizen Card will be the only card accepted and in use. During the first week of issuing the Citizen Card, over 1,000 residents were attended to at the department of Transport’s office, located within the old town hall in the main square. The previous morning hours only have now been extended to 8.15am until 8.15pm with no lunchtime break until Friday 16th September. If you have not yet collected your new Citizen Card, which entitles you to free bus travel throughout the year on Torrevieja’s local buses plus entrance into several of the town’s museums, do not forget that you must be a resident of Torrevieja. Applicants must also be registered on the padrón and ready to show proof of identity, plus present a CAM bank receipt showing that the 35€ for production costs has been paid. The account number to do this is 2090 7150 55 0200168516.

Paralympic athlete denounces municipal pool facilities by Jan Gamm SANTIAGO SANZ is an acknowledged star in the field of Paralympics with numerous medals won at the Paralympic Games, a World Champion with an armful of medals and awards for his sporting achievements. Sanz has found it necessary to denounce facilities at his local Vega Baja municipal sporting complex in Albatera that, despite being open for only a few years, offers woefully inadequate access for the disabled. DRAGGED In order to access the weight room for training, on three days of the week the athlete has to be dragged up the stairs; the only available access, not only for the disabled but also for anyone else with limited mobility or agility such as the elderly. There is no elevator, no ramp and in fact no other way to enter the area that offers vital training for Sanz’ preparation for the Half Marathon in
Portugal in September. The installations directly violate current regulations that clearly require all such facilities to be accessible to all social groups and the athlete has submitted a formal statement to the Municipal Pool and also to the Spanish Committee of Disabled People (CERMI). He is now awaiting resolution. Sanz has been informed by the council that a solution could take months to implement due to limited funds and in the meantime he endures a humiliating performance to gain access to the weight room. “The lack of accessibility in not only detrimental to the disabled but also to the elderly who might want to indulge in sport!” says Sanz, who is pressuring the town hall for immediate action. CHALLENGE Possibly Sanz should challenge the local councillors reSanz sponsible to volunteer to be dragged up a flight of stone accessing steps in the interests of research before approving sporting weight facilities within the community in the future. training
The price of textbooks increases by almost 3% THE PRICE of textbooks has increased by 2.9% this year compared to the 2011-2012 school year, according to the annual report ‘Development of Textbooks’ conducted by the National Association of Publishers of Books and Material Teaching (Anele). Where possible, parents organise a book swap system to offset the cost for struggling families, although text books have a limited shelf life due to the ever-changing curriculum. Books are rarely suitable for recycling beyond a period of four years.
World Orchestra to perform in Torrevieja’s municipal theatre
By Julie Day THE WORLD Orchestra of Youth Musicians will perform in Torrevieja’s municipal theatre on Tuesday evening in a unique concert organised by the social side of the CAM bank. Directed by Josep Vicent, this important orchestra, made up of many talented musicians from various countries, includes a local Torrevejense as one of its members. The multicultural orchestra is a perfect example of how people of different nationalities can integrate well and get along together through their shared love of music, and so it is especially fitting that they will perform in another perfect example of harmonious multicultural living - Torrevieja. Entrance to the concert is free with an invitation, which can be picked up from the municipal theatre’s box office today and on Tuesday between 11am and 1pm or two hours before the performance. The concert takes place on Tuesday 6th September from 9.30pm.

Monarch abolishes debit card fees LEADING AIRLINE Monarch announced in June of this year a commitment to transparent and simple pricing. In a move that will put pressure on its rivals to follow its lead, Monarch has eliminated debit card fees and introduced a fixed fee for all credit card bookings.
Customers electing to pay using a debit card now incur no card charge fees, whilst customers electing to pay using a credit card will be charged a €12 fee regardless of the value of the transaction or the number of people travelling, providing an upfront, transparent and simpleto-understand charging policy. In addition to a commitment to transparent and simple pricing, Monarch has also introduced a “Build your own class” concept of flying. Customers who are looking for the cheapest possible flight will be able to fly on Monarch with an allocated seat for a fare that is competitive against the no-frills carriers. Add-ons, such as hot meals, seats with extra leg room and extra baggage allowance, are offered at the point of booking for additional small sums. The concept enables Monarch’s customers to choose the services they want, without being obliged to pay for anything they don’t want. For further information or to book Monarch flights, please visit www.monarch.co.uk.
Cliff rescue from a 200 metre wall of rock for hikers in Javea THE FIRE Service and the Civil Guard have rescued two climbers trapped on a 200m rock face near Cova Tallada, Cap St Antoni in Javea on Tuesday at 8am. The two hikers, aged 38 and 43, were descending a slope while exploring the area. First time in fifty years Watts In Britain By
Paul Watts
QUEUING... IT’S one of those things you have to do in life. You cannot avoid it and you cannot circumvent it. At some point nearly every single day you are going to have to be prepared to queue. It’s often a frustrating thing but one you have to be prepared to deal with calmly...or risk madness. There are two main queuing positions: the sitting down queue and the standing up one. Here’s an example of both: there is the steering-wheel-drumming type of queue, during your rush-hour drive in or out of work; and then there’s the pre-adrenalin rush type of queue, as you stand in line for the Alton Towers’ Nemesis ride. Those examples also highlight that queuing can come in a variety of different guises too, such as: boring, frustrating, entertaining, maddening and even pleasing. From the anxiety-inducing, waiting-for-a-dental-check-up queue, to the pleasurable waiting-for-a-cold-beer queue. I prefer the latter... Now, how about the post office queue? ‘When I yer a lad’, my mum would send me off to the ‘big’ post office for something or other. Picture it, a little lad in a big post office with six possible serving windows to go to. Six queues to choose; which one to queue? Inevitably, I’d pick the wrong one. If I saw the queue with just one little old lady in line, I’d deduce that this was bound to be the quickest queue. Wrong! Out would come her life savings in a hundred little cash bags and I’d be there for hours. I quickly learned
Tomatina food fight a resounding success THE SMALL town of Buñol in the Valencian province was awash with 120,000 kilos of squashed tomatoes on Wednesday as 40,000 took part in the annual food party, hurling over-ripe tomatoes at each other in one of the World’s biggest food fight fests. Tomatina is gaining world recognition as an extraordinary way to relieve stress and tension, featured in Bollywood in February of this year with an additional event laid on for the occasion. Wednesday’s revellers were resourceful as ever, using colanders and watermelon halves as ‘crash helmets’. The town hall in Buñol considering methods of reducing numbers for next year’s event.
that swopping lines was no good either because the minute I’d jump from one queue to another the sodbehind-the-screen would scroll the down the blind marked ‘position closed!’ One simple modern innovation that has helped take some of the frustration out of post office or bank queuing is those ‘funnel-them-into-a-single-line’ mobile barriers. It stops those queue lane jumpers that frustrate so many of us. They use these barriers a lot at Gatwick to herd all of their passengers into a queue that snakes back and forth across the customs hall about twenty times. To cover a distance of a hundred yards you end up walking half a mile. Oh, while we’ve move onto airports that reminds me: did you know that one budget airline has even turned queuing into a first and second class pursuit? “How can that be?” I hear you ask, “Wasn’t the whole concept of budget airlines a ‘one price for all’ deal?” Anyone can sit anywhere they like, surely? Just like at the bus stop; you turn up, queue and then make a mad scramble for your favourite seat. Well, not quite because now if you do not opt - aka pay more money - for the ‘priority’ queue then you have to wait in a second class queue until the mad scramble for favourite seats has taken place, with the priority queue first. I suppose it’s a bit like doing the final challenge on TV’s Gladiators. More points will give you the better start: “On my first whistle, contest-
23 25 21
ant one will go... On my second whistle, all the cheapskates in the non-priority queue can go...” Phew, you get two mad rugby scrums for the price of one. However, I think there could be a problem here and you don’t need to be Einstein to figure it out. Dear Mr O’Airline, I would really like to know the answer to this: what if everybody has paid the bit extra to get on the first-class priority queue? We’ve all paid to get a head start and err... we’ve all got a head start. How’s that gonna work? Right, so now we’re back to one queue again. Do you get a refund? A sort of non fast-track disappointment payment. Or, will we now have you to pay you more money for a ‘priority’ priority queue? It could go on indefinitely... Anyway, all of which brings me to be where I’ve never been before; at the front of the queue. Yup, for the first time ever I found myself in poll position. It’s never happened before and probably won’t again but on Saturday night at Birmingham International myself and the Management (who’d cleverly paid for priority) were passing the very gate that, unknown to us, would be our boarding gate when a nice young lady in uniform said, “This will be for the Alicante flight.” “Yippee,” I cried, steering the Management into line, “this really is a first.” Mind you, I must confess I didn’t feel all that comfortable being at the head of the queue... All those years at the back, I guess. Watts in Britain, firmly in line…

The new British colony of Orihuela Costa by jan Gamm THE LARGE number of foreign residents and their lack of interest in learning the local language is being attributed to a large number of communities along the Orihuela coast being turned into ‘British colonies’. The 30,000 Europeans living within a number of large urbanisations and developments along the coast are joined by thousands of tourists each year, mostly from Britain, Ireland and Germany. However, integration of the population is rare, with each nationality choosing to patronise stores that stock familiar products and offer services in their native language. The Orihuela Costa is therefore full of supermarkets; grocery shops; restaurants; Irish pubs other businesses that advertise in English or German but rarely in Spanish. Restaurant menus, posters and billboards all proclaim the virtues of each establishment in English and/or German.

A clerk working at Playa Flamenca said, “Most foreigners who live on the coast do not know or use Spanish and only communicate using English. The shops and services here are a major tourist attraction but the lack of Spanish along the coast makes speaking English a prerequisite to finding work.” Contracts offered in the area call for English as a basic skill. And the local media – radio and newspapers - is also English-oriented so available work is advertised in English: “If you are not fluent in English, you can forget finding work here,” said a shop assistant.
For those wanting to expand their knowledge of local culture, in Pilar de la Horadada a free ‘integration seminar’ is to be made available to foreign residents, starting 19th September and continuing until 29th November - a total of 40 hours spread over 20 sessions – two hour classes twice a week – organised by the Diputación de Alicante through the European Residents Unit. The course offers two levels: Basic and Intermediate, focusing on the practical use of language and communication. See www.ladipu.com or call 96 598 8900 for more information.
Dancing in the street TORREVIEJA’S DEPARTMENT of Commerce is bringing dance to the streets of Torrevieja with two separate events planned for next week. The first is to take place from 12pm on Saturday 3rd September in Calle Concepción, the road that leads down from the main church to the seafront. Two professional dancers that began their career in Torrevieja and Murcia - and who now feature in part of the Opera Ballet of Cairo - will introduce spectators to the world of dance: it has been advised to wear comfy clothing and socks. The second event takes place also in Calle Concepción on Thursday 8th September from 7pm and consists of a performance by the State Ballet of Mexico.
Campoverde library equipped and run by foreign residents
Leticia’s book swapping venture is now Pinar de Campoverde’s international library
by Julie Day A BOOK swapping and lending venture by a British resident and her husband in 1990 has grown over the years and has now become the ‘International Library’ of Pilar de la Horadada with a membership of over 700 residents and a designated building offered by the town hall. Located in the Pinar de Campoverde urbanisation, the library, which is run by a total of 11 volunteers, mainly ladies over the age of 60, currently contains in excess of 15,000 books, all of which have been donated by the foreign resident community. The majority of books are in English although there is also some reading material in French, German and Nordic languages.

-dad words Spanish lessons by
Jane Cronin
A weekly ‘cut out and keep’ feature helping you to learn basic Spanish for everyday needs
You may well have come across the claim that thousands of Spanish and English words are almost identical. And it is absolutely true. We have the `-ible’ and `-able’ words, like the English word possible which in Spanish is `posible’, responsible - `responsable’, considerable - `considerable’. Then you’ve got the `-ant’, and `-ent’ words so constant is `constante’, intelligent `inteligente’. Then there are the `-tion’ and `-sion’ words, station - `estación’, passion - `pasión’. So yes, these examples can be multiplied by thousands, and although it would not be very practical to memorise lists of these words, it does mean that you can understand a tremendous amount of what you read and hear, and you can hazard guesses about how to say things in Spanish and sometimes you’ll be right! You can guess that impossible is going to be `imposible’, and so you’ll understand it when your bank manager says it to you. And this guessing method is definitely one step up from the great British technique of sticking an `o’ at the end of the word to make it sound Spanish, although even this can work sometimes, as in words like `¡fantástico!’ However what I actually want to tell you about are the `-dad’ words. These are the thousands and thousands of words in Spanish that end with these three letters `-dad’ which are broadly equivalent to our `-ity’ ending words in English. This means that an enormous number of words ending in `-dad’ in Spanish mean the same as words that end in `-ity’ in English. An easy example is `comunidad’, in English - community. A further interesting point is that `dad’ words are always feminine - it is `la comunidad’. Strange as someone commented, you would expect words ending in `-dad’ to be masculine, like your Dad. Yes, well, anyway, let`s have a look at some more of these words. Some of them make a direct switch to English, and if you hear them in Spanish you ought to be able to understand them straight away. Here are just a few: `universidad, publicidad, nacionalidad, identidad, electricidad, sexualidad, actividad, flexibilidad, necesidad, popularidad, capacidad’, which are fairly obvious: `university, publicity, nationality, identity, electricity etc.’ Here are a few more slightly longer ones: `artificialidad, credibilidad, durabilidad, extremidad, maternidad, objectividad, simplicidad, ambigüedad, superioridad, velocidad’. These are a bit trickier to hear, but easy to identify in written form: `artificiality, credibility, durability, extremity, maternity, objectivity, simplicity, ambiguity, superiority, velocity’. Now something interesting is happening here. Some of these words are ones that we don’t very often use
in English - because we find them a bit too academic or technical, and because we have perfectly good everyday alternatives. Instead of `velocity’ we say ‘speed’, instead of `artificiality’ we say `falseness’, instead of `maternity’ we usually say `motherhood’. We know the other words, we understand them when we read them and use them in specific contexts, but in everyday speech we have other words that mean the same. Now this is not only interesting but exciting. We’ve discovered that English is a two-tiered language: we have academic words and everyday words, posh words and common words, for the same things. Our `posh’ words come originally from Latin, and our common everyday words come from German and Scandinavian. It all goes back to former times when the country was ruled by French-speaking nobles and the Roman church, but ordinary English people spoke Anglo-Saxon and Danish, brought over by northern European invaders. Eventually these worlds merged and ultimately produced one language - modern English. Spanish is a language that comes basically from Latin, so many of the everyday Spanish words sound like their intellectual equivalents in English. We can learn so much about language from history. The result today though, is that if you think `posh’ you can understand an awful lot of everyday Spanish. Now let’s look at some of these words that don’t exactly have an equivalent in English, but which should ring some bells if you start thinking about word associations. For example `felicidad’ sounds like the girl’s name Felicity, which in fact means `happiness’. `Fidelidad’ sounds like `fidelity’, which can mean `faithfulness’ as well as `fidelity’ in the sense of `accuracy’ - the same use as `high-fidelity’ or `hi-fi’. And what about `sanidad’, this looks like `sanity’ which in English refers to mental health, but in fact `sanidad’ means `health’, usually in the sense of `public health’ as opposed to the physical health of an individual which is `salud’. This last word is an example of what are often referred to as `false friends’, that is words that appear to mean one thing, but in fact mean something different. (Well known examples are `embarazada’ which looks like `embarrassed’ but actually means `pregnant’ and `constipado’ meaning `full of cold’ and not `constipated’!) So whilst we can guess a lot and play about a lot with the language, and should feel free to do so, we should always be aware that a few `false friends’ might just slip through the net in the process. Changes re New Zealand QROPS – things are becoming clearer by
Stephen Ward & Robert Burns IN LAST week’s article we revealed that the New Zealand Financial Markets Authority (FMA), which has taken over the authorisation and supervision of New Zealand pension schemes, has just published a draft bill for consultation. The bill is called The Financial Markets Conduct Bill and it runs to a brain-numbing 400 pages. The draft Bill includes proposed changes in New Zealand pensions’ legislation which could have far reaching effects on New Zealand QROPS. It proposes that in the future New Zealand pension schemes may only be open to New Zealand residents. THE GOOD NEWS Fortunately such a change is unlikely to pass into law for at
least 12 months, possibly longer than that, so the door to a New Zealand QROPS is still open. For non UK residents, who left the UK prior to 5th April 2006, and in due course 5th April 2007, it is still possible to transfer your private pension funds to a New Zealand QROPS and immediately access the full fund in cash, with no New Zealand tax liability. The wording of the draft Bill is, to say the least, confusing and some observers, myself included, initially thought that the relevant paragraph could even have been a drafting error. However, we have been in correspondence with the Ministry of Economic Development who, whilst confirming that there is no drafting error, did reveal that the requirement, (to be a New Zealand resident), “would only apply as entry criteria and not to existing members.” In other words any non UK resident who has transferred their fund to an NZ QROPS would not be forced out of the fund when the new legislation takes effect. CLARIFICATION STILL NEEDED As there are no ‘transitional arrangements’ outlined in the bill it is unclear if the existing availability of 100% withdrawal of capital will apply to these individuals, or the
proposed new rules which may be less generous. However, there will be strong lobbying for a common sense treatment of transferees to enable them to take benefits under the basis that applied when they transferred in, rather than subject to any revised basis which was introduced subsequently. DEVELOPING ALTERNATIVES FOR THE FUTURE We are, as you would expect, in the process of working on suitable alternative arrangements for our clients, this includes schemes in new QROPS jurisdictions where we are negotiating exclusive marketing rights. Once these are available we will set out how they will operate – but in the meantime the message coming out of New Zealand is loud and clear, if you have a UK fund you wish to transfer to New Zealand in order to access your capital, then the only way to ensure you can do it is not to delay. September tourists by
Suzanne O’Connell Customer Care at Ábaco
HEAVE A sigh of relief! August is over. The evenings are a little bit cooler, UK schools have reined the children in, the pool is less of a maelstrom, you can find a parking space and your favourite restaurant has a place for you once more. Five very good reasons for celebrating September - and five very good reasons why September is a favourite visiting time for so many non-resident holiday home owners. Just as the planes are setting their cargo of kids down, another very different cargo is replacing them. Couples of all ages who aren’t confined to school holidays can be found in the departure lounge. Perhaps you are one of them? Every street has its September tourists anxious to catch the last of the summer sun at autumn prices. Our September tourists are a very different breed from their August neighbours. They’re not churning
up the shallow end or cluttering up the communal entrance. They’re not running up and down the patio at past midnight or diving into the deep end with a death wish. Well, not the ones we know. The most disruption they’re likely to cause is a smoky barbecue and the odd curse in a game of cards. Rather a lot of stereotyping going on here and apologies to all those non-resident visitors with designs on keeping their neighbours up all night. But in our experience, September signifies a different rhythm. You’re probably wondering where tax comes into all this. Having painted a picture of non-resident composure and lazy September days, how could we possibly disturb the peace by reminding non-residents of their tax obligations? We really would sooner not. You’ve earned your September tourist title and deserve a few weeks at least of tax-free, bill–devoid bliss. That’s why we’re not going to suggest you visit our offices
in the centre of Torrevieja to sort out your tax return before December 31st but encourage you to try our ÁbacoConnect website instead: www.abacoconnect.com Online from anywhere in the world you can organise and pay your non-resident taxes without spoiling your September recuperation. Instead you can squeeze every ounce left from the summer sun and save all things tax-related for hurly burly Britain in preChristmas preparation. Well, we can’t sort everything for you online. For an online non-resident tax service visit the ÁbacoConnect website www.abacoconnect.com. Tourism spending tops 2008 record INCREASING NUMBERS of tourists in Spain this year led to international visitors spending slightly under €29.5 million in the country, an encouraging 8.8% improvement over 2010 and topping the €29.264 million spent in 2008, according to the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade. A week ago it was recorded that international tourist arrivals throughout July had recovered to pre-crisis levels but the industry received the news ‘cautiously’, acknowledging that recovery still has a “long way to go.” The bulk of spending was in Catalonia, followed by the Canaries, Balearics and Andalusia.
Rubalcaba: Spain must be saved from what happened in Greece PSOE’s ELECTORAL candidate, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, defended the reform of the Constitution on Wednesday because it “…guarantees that Spain offers more than other countries to withstand the financial storm,” adding, “I do not want for my country what’s going on in Greece, even if it costs me votes.” Rubalcaba imparted this message to 53 university students in a closed-door meeting where he talked about college, employment and scholarships, also current issues such as constitutional reform, stressing that the burden of debt for Spain was like the country having “a bad case of cholesterol.”

VAT REDUCTION on new home purchase The Spanish Royal Decree - Law number 9/2011 (Real Decreto-ley RDL 9/2011) was approved on 19-08-2011. This Decree-Law includes in its fourth temporary provision a modification in the VAT TAX (Impuesto Valor Añadido - IVA) in relation to new-home purchase. We wish to draw attention to this matter as it is of great importance, since it may well affect those readers who are buying, or will be buying, a new property in the coming months. The following main points are worth highlighting: 1) REDUCTION OF THE VAT TAX: the change means a reduction from the current 8% VAT rate down to 4%. 2) AFFECTS ONLY HANDING OVER OF DWELLING:
This rebate applies to the delivery of houses, buildings or those parts of buildings able to be used for living purposes and includes the parking spaces (maximum two) annexed to the dwelling and jointly purchased / transferred in the same deed. Therefore it will not apply in the delivery of any other type of constructions which are not suitable for living, such as commercial premises, parking spaces independently transmitted, etc. This reduction is not applicable to letting contracts as these are not considered a ‘handing over’ or ‘transfer’. 3) It solely refers to delivery of NEW HOUSES OR FIRST TRANSMISSION. 4) It is a TEMPORARY CHANGE. The approved reduction has a clear provisional TEMPORARY character as it will be exclusively applicable from 20th August 2011 (when the RDL 9/2011 came into force) to 31st December 2011. It seems evident that this new Decree-Law has been approved in order to encourage the acquisition of brand new properties (from promoters/developers) by offering a clear tax advantage of 50% reduction of the VAT rate to be paid. This contrasts with the lack of tax incentive or tax
rebate in the purchase of resale properties subject to TRANSFER / TRANSMISSION TAX (ITP/TPO) which depends on each Autonomous Community (divisions of the Spanish Estate) where the property is located. For example in the Valencian Community this Transfer Tax is set at 7%. Thus, this new Decree-Law encourages the purchase of new homes versus the purchase of resale properties where the Tax is practically double. From all the above specified please be aware that if you are in the process of purchasing a NEW first hand house / property from a promoter or developer, this measure can mean an important benefit for you. If this is your case or the case of someone you know please do not hesitate to contact us. “I have acted properly in the CAM,” says Navarro Jesus Navarro, CAM director for the past eight years, said on Wednesday that he had nothing to fear from the Bank of Spain, confident that he had “acted properly” in response to the Bank of Spain announcing that past directors, presidents and councillors of CAM would be brought to book in the courts for ‘irregularities’. “Nothing untoward has taken place in my presence,” said Navarro, “…and I have availed myself of a personal loan but with an interest payment of 5.5%,” he stressed (following controversy over top management receiving ‘soft loans’ interest free, such as the case of ex-Cam President Modesto Crespo).

International child abduction between Spain and Great Britain SUMMER AND other holiday times always bring an increased risk that children may be taken out of their home countries against the wishes of one or the other parent, especially if a marriage or other relationship is breaking down. If this has happened or you are afraid that it might happen, what can you do? Both Spain and the UK are signatories to the Hague Convention and Luxembourg Convention, both of 1980 designed to reduce the number of disputes and shorten the procedures for returning children to the countries where they are normally resident and to the care of the parent legally entitled to custody. The conventions also provide a mechanism for arranging visits under judicial supervision by children to the parent who does not have custody. The conventions apply only to children under the age of 16. The principle is that a child should not be wrongfully removed from the country where they are normally resident. The technical term is ‘Habitual Residence’ which is not the same as nationality: a child of British nationality will be returned to Spain after being wrongfully taken to the UK if the child’s normal home is in Spain. If you believe that your child is in danger of being abducted from Spain you should keep the following information ready: The child’s full name, place and date of birth, passport or identity document number, date and place of issue, a photograph of the child and a physical description The full name, aliases, place and date of birth, passport details, photograph, occupation, connections
to particular places, and likely departure details of the person who you believe may attempt to take the child. Copies of any agreements or Court Orders concerning custody, and the child’s birth certificate, and in Spain the ‘libro de familia’ Time is of the essence in these cases. Under the conventions a child may not be returned to their original country of habitual residence if more than one year has passed and a Court is satisfied that the child has settled down in the country to which they have been taken. Under Article 225 of the Spanish Criminal Code child abduction to another country is punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment unless the abductor advises the parent or guardian in Spain of the whereabouts of the child within 24 hours and agrees to return the child immediately. In England & Wales under the Child Abduction Act 1984 it is a criminal offence for a parent or guardian or any person who has a custody or residence Court Order relating to the child to take the child out of the United Kingdom without the consent of any other person having rights to the child. If a child has been unlawfully taken out of Spain a standard form, which is available from the Ministry of Justice website (www.mju.es), requesting the return of the child must be completed and sent to the Ministry of Justice by fax together with the following documents: • a copy of the birth certificate • any Court Order for the custody of the child that may exist
• A photo of the child • A photo of the person who is believed to have carried out the abduction • All documents which show that the child is normally resident in Spain In the UK, the parallel procedure is to contact the International Child Abduction and Contact Unit via the office of the Official Solicitor (www.officialsolicitor.gov.uk) with similar information but which shows that the child is normally resident in the UK. If you do not know where your child has been taken it is best to contact the local police who will issue a ‘Port Alert’ to circulate your child’s name and details to all UK points of departure. If the child has actually left the country, the police in the country where the child is believed to have been taken will be alerted and once the child is found, proceedings will be started for their return to their home country. However the search for the child and the proceedings can take time, especially in the face of determined efforts by the abductor to hide themselves and the child. Where there is no international convention between countries, proceedings for the return of children can be very much more difficult. In these situations it is vital to be prepared and to act quickly if the worst happens. We at Link Point can help you prepare an emergency file ready for use if your child is taken without your consent, or to help deal with the authorities in an emergency.

State deficit
THE STATE deficit in Spain fell by 11.8% up to July and is now 2.09% of GDP according to figures presented by the Minister for Economy, Elena Salgado this week, reflecting an income of €67 billion and spending of €89.75 billion. The surplus in the Social Security budget fell by 47.65%, standing at €3.21 billion, with Company Tax Income falling to €4.761 billion, 23.8% down on the same period for 2010. Overall income from tax rose 1% compared to the same period in 2010. The Spanish Secretary of State for the Economy, José Manuel Campa, is in London in talks over the Spanish Government’s latest economic measures in a bid to increase confidence in Spain, in meetings with investors from Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank and Barclays.
The money markets this week STERLING DEPRECIATED 1.5% against the US$ this week and was the second worst performer after the Swiss franc. The pound hit a low of $1.623/£1 on Friday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke failed to provide any direct indication that the US economy would receive further liquidity. The pound also depreciated 1.4% versus the euro last week, its steepest drop in two months, mostly due to concerns over the British economy’s slow and anaemic growth. Further speculation is that interest rates are likely to be left on hold until 2012, in addition to the UK needing another round of quantitative easing. Market players are beginning to worry whether the UK can continue to with stand its austerity cuts.

Autumn lawn care by Greengrass AUTUMN AND Spring is the easiest time to plant a new lawn: the ground is wet and temperatures are lower than during the summer. But whether you are planting a new Autumn lawn or just renovating your existing lawn, there are jobs that need to be done in the Autumn.
IT’S AUTUMN The heat of the summer is not quite over; the white grapes have been picked in late August; and farmers are getting increasingly agitated about their Red Grapes. Basically it’s a gamble with the elements. The longer you can leave them to ripen on the vine before it rains, the better the taste, the sweeter the grape and thus the higher the alcohol content of the wine. But if you ‘mis-time’ it, the crop is ruined by the rain. Anyway enough of the alcohol talk let’s get started with the Autumn lawn: PLANTING A NEW AUTUMN LAWN If you intend planting a new Autumn lawn there is little point in doing any planting before the Gota Fria. Any seed you sow will be washed away if it rains and any plugs you plant will be drowned or covered in mud. So if it hasn’t rained yet, use the time usefully. Prepare your soil (test
its pH, add organic material if needed - we can supply both), rake, roll, and level. Ground preparation is the key to the success of a new Autumn lawn. Sow the grass seed or plant the grass plugs in accordance with the suppliers’ instructions. Keep the grass seed damp until it germinates and if the soil is dry, water the plugs every day for 3 - 4 weeks. CARING FOR AN EXISTING LAWN If you already have a lawn, the question is: “On a scale of 1 to 10, how green is it? Depending on the answer (10 being green all over; 5 is 50% grass and 50% brown patches). Ten out of ten means all that is necessary is keep mowing it and prepare it for winter by applying Autumn fertilizer, ‘Pre-emergent’ weed killer, and/or broad leaf weed killer (when the weather is warm and dry). Five out of ten or less: if you have English-type grass this means you should re-seed the bald patches with more seed (English grass will not fill the gaps, because it is generally bunch-type grass). If you have warm season grass, the best solution for brown patches is to re-plug with more grass plugs. Note: Do not apply pre-emergent weed killer if you are sowing new grass seed as this will kill it.
Wait until the grass has germinated, or sow the grass seed 3 - 4 weeks after applying the preemergent weed killer. CUTTING If it’s an English type (cool season grass) it will continue to grow and need mowing throughout the winter. If it’s a warm season grass, it should not need cutting, and if the weather turns really cold it may hibernate and go a brownish colour. WEEDS Whatever the type of grass you have, you can guarantee that after the heavy rains and when the soil is moist you will very quickly have an abundance of unwanted weeds. Crabgrass and Oxalis will germinate at this time of year, so you will need to apply a ‘Pre-emergence’ weed killer a week to 10 days after the heavy rain has stopped. This will kill the weed seeds as they germinate. If you have any broad-leaved weeds you can also apply a broad-leaved weed killer. FEEDING English grass will need feeding in the Autumn, but be careful not to overfeed with high Nitrogen fertilizer, as if we have a cold spell it will make the grass more susceptible to damage.
Warm season grasses should only be fertilized at the beginning of Autumn and then nothing until they ‘green up’ in spring. SCRAPING/RAKING Because English grass will be starting to grow and get stronger in the Autumn, if you have a build-up of debris or lawn cuttings, it is the best time of the year to rake the lawn (using a wire lawn rake). Do not rake a warm season lawn - this should be done at the beginning of the growing season in Spring. For more information about lawns, grass or if you have any questions about your lawn, we would be pleased to answer any questions free – see us on Google ‘Lawns in Spain’ or http://www.lawnsinspain.com Contact: lawnsinspain@yahoo.com or phone 676 863 778.

Make the best of September by
Clodagh & Dick Handscombe Practical gardeners and authors
THE WEATHER Having just checked the forward weather forecasts it seems that we are in for an Indian Summer - just a few degrees cooler and with slightly shorter days than August. So yet again the Gota Frias delayed until October and early November. A big change from twenty five years ago when absentee gardeners could bank on leaving Spain in the middle of September knowing that the ground was saturated, or about to be, and no problem with plants surviving without watering until half term or even Christmas. SOME TASKS FOR SEPTEMBER There is a lot to do especially if there are a few cooler days. Have selected the following from the seasonal gardening calendars included in each of our books. Watering – Naturally this still needs doing especially for plants planted during the year but do cut back as temperatures fall and the days become shorter. Autumn is a good time, without major risks, to persuade plants to put down deeper roots to search for natural moisture and nutrients rather than being lazy and developing more short roots going up to the surface to await your daily over watering and weekly over feeding. When out walking or driving next ask yourself, ‘How come that mountainsides north of the Bernia ridge are covered with healthy plants?’
Taking cuttings – Now is a good time to take cuttings as there are still several good growing months when roots can be developed. But do keep the potted cuttings in a shady area until hardening off to plant out next Spring. Growing vegetables – September and October are important months for preparing soils and composts for growing vegetables in the garden or in containers on apartment terraces. Until the temperatures drop below thirty degrees and the first rains come it’s wise to shade early sowings and plantlets. Bagging up leaves – Inevitably leaves fall in the autumn starting with the fall of almond and apricot trees. Rather than send them off in the weekly garden rubbish collection or green waste bins bag them up in large plastic bags with a few holes in the sides and hide away for a year in a corner of a garden. Then you should have some good nutrient rich leaf mould for recycling to composts and soils.
MEET DICK AT THE PARCENT AUTUMN FAIR 24th /25th SEPTEMBER Dick has agreed to support the Parcent Autumn Charity Fair organised by the new village charity Creativa. Avocado Crime Wave CATCHING THE eye this week was the recent football strike in Spain that ended after Spain’s Professional Football League (LFP) guaranteed payments owed to 200 players. During the period of the strike did anyone else notice that Barcelona were allowed to play Real Madrid twice in the Super Cup in Spain, and Porto once in some money-generating Super Euro Cup, whose name I can’t recall, and have no intention of bothering to find out: such is the meaninglessness of these types of matches. It seems wrong that the rich clubs and players were allowed to get richer while they were on strike, while the poorer clubs and players the strike was intended to benefit ‘kicked their heels rather than their balls’ (so to speak) for a couple of weeks, and the fans were made to suffer... although one could argue that given the quality of some of the football the real suffering comes when you actually have to watch the games! Just a thought, but if the strike breaking Barcelona and Real Madrid had donated all the proceeds from their games to the LFP/AFE to actually pay the 200 players, the strike wouldn’t needed to go ahead, the public would have been able to start watching their teams again, and the cost of resolving the strike would have been avoided. Having no children, I am somewhat ‘out of the loop’ when it comes to knowing how much things cost, but I was somewhat surprised when I read that the average cost per child in Spain is 640€. The Confederation of Consumers (CECU) recommends parents get in touch with their PTA and town hall to find out about ways of cutting costs: one bit of advice I saw them offer was to ‘buy your kids clothes in August while the sales were on’, a case of stating the obvious if ever there was one… Although I have no children, I did study Economics in the dim and
distant past: a time when they still had Universities and Polytechnics offering real courses that gave you some chance of getting a job and contributing back to the society that had funded your education! As such my eye does get drawn to the financial and political headlines more often than not, specifically the approval of a package of labour market reforms aimed at fighting sky-high unemployment, especially among youths, ahead of a general election on 20th November. Under the new rules fixed-term contracts will no longer be automatically converted into permanent contracts after two years. Workers on short-term contracts, often youths at the start of their careers, complain that companies prefer to let them go after two years instead of giving them a permanent contract, which carries higher benefits. This week’s domestic violence tragedy is that of the 75-year-old man, Pedro G.D., who committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a train in Murcia recently, after he stabbed his wife to death. Have you noticed that more and more of these tragedies involve the elderly? One can only speculate but my money would go on the fact that they just can’t afford long term care, have no savings and just cannot see any future. On a more humorous note, a prostitute in Lleida called the police recently after a client refused to pay her because he was ‘not satisfied with her services’. The Guardia Urbana was called out to a flat on the C/ Onofre Cerveró when they were contacted by a woman identified only by her initials, G. C. A. She attempted to report the client for theft, but he said he had withheld her fee as he did not feel the service received met his expectations. However, the Guardia resolved the issue by prosecuting them both, since soliciting in the street has been banned in Lleida since February 2009.
Concerning events in Afghanistan I think it best to quote direct from the Marine Corps Times: “Audible farting has been banned for some Marines downrange [slang roughly meaning ‘in the warzone’] because it offends the Afghans … So, for all Marines getting ready to go downwind, I mean downrange, be forewarned — you may have to hold it in ... at least until you get back to your hooch where you can loudly crop dust your friends.” MORE AMUSING HEADLINES THIS WEEK A Spanish league football team (Getafe FC) is encouraging its fans to become sperm donors so that they can breed more season-ticket holders. The avocado season has not yet begun but already farmers are suffering thefts from their fields. One farmer in the Valle Niza area of Vélez-Málaga has suffered two robberies within 24 hours. In the first instance, thieves stole 2,000 kilos of avocados which still have two months to go before they are ready for sale. The next night, despite the farmer patrolling his field, the thieves returned to take another 200 kilos of avocados. Computing Battery problems Derek via email asks: HELLO AUNTY. I have started getting the following message on startup of my laptop “Warning: the battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery. Press any key to continue.” Upon pressing any key my laptop boots up as normal. I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 and the original battery is still installed. If I run the laptop off mains the battery runs down as you would expect. Upon connecting to the mains the battery
recharges. Aunty Says: The 1501 is quite an old laptop in computer terms so it maybe that the battery is simply on its way out. There should be a calibration option within ‘control panel’ ‘power options’ that may well re-sync the battery with the laptop so maybe have a browse around. A new battery for one of them could be quite expensive but it’s worth having a look on amazon or eBay, but as long as it works after a fashion, it may just be worth putting up with the problem.
with aunty virus Power cuts affecting tower unit Geoff via email asks: EVERY DAY here in Moraira the electric cuts out for about 3 seconds morning and evening. This is all well and good but the last time it did this my Tower unit running XP switched back on and went through all the starting up procedure as normal, it then popped up a message “This application or DLL E:\windows\system32\cryptdll.dll is not a valid Windows image” Then goes on to say “put the diskette in” but how can I when this will not allow me to see anything on the screen? I have started again in safe mode and all the alternatives but to no avail. Everything in my home has power surge protection as I have learnt my lesson in 20 years here. Aunty Says: Hi Geoff. This could prove to be a bit tricky as it sounds like one of your Windows system files has been damaged and you may need to boot to the original XP CD and run some of the repair tools. You should phone around some local computer repair shops and explain the situation. Maybe as important is to get an Uninterruptable Power Supply (or SAI in Spanish) as this could easily happen again if or when your PC is shut down when Windows is running. A surge protection device will only protect you against minor power fluctuations and not complete outages.
using skype Mary via email asks: DEAR AUNTY, I use Skype to keep in touch with my family and friends, and although the audio voice quality is very clear, when I activate the video cam, my PC freezes. I am unable to use either the mouse or the keyboard as everything is locked. I have to restart the computer but it then takes ages to repair after the crash.
Aunty Says: Hi Mary. There are a few things you can try to narrow down the cause of this problem. The easiest thing to try is to plug the webcam into a different USB port just in case there is a problem with the particular USB port on the PC. If that doesn’t work then re-install the drivers from the CD which you should have got with the webcam (make sure you unplug the webcam before you run the install program). If there is still a problem then it is looking quite likely you have a faulty webcam, so maybe install and test the camera on another computer and see what happens. If the webcam works on another PC then you may need to have an engineer look at your Windows installation, but if all these tests fail then splash out 10€ on a new webcam.
Cannot access my regular site Phil via email asks: DEAR AUNTY. I save your weekly emails but can’t remember whether you have discussed this topic before or not. I regular use the link www.joinfreesat. co.uk however, for the past two weeks or so I get the message. “Oops! Internet Explorer could not connect to www. joinfreesat.co.uk” It is the only regular site that I visit but cannot access so I thought that maybe it had stopped working. Today I spoke to someone who said that they still had access to it. I do not know which web browser they use but I use Internet Explorer 8.
Aunty Says: Hi Phil. I use IE8 and had no difficulty accessing the website. It could be because that particular site has inadvertently been added to IE8’s restricted site list which you can find via ‘tools’ ‘internet options’ click on the ‘security’ tab and the ‘restricted sites’ icon followed by the ‘sites’ button. It could also be one of IE8’s add-ons conflicting with the site so maybe disable them one-by-one via ‘tools’ ‘manage add-ons’. If these fail maybe try using Firefox and see if that works.
That’s all for this week, email me on auntyvirus@roundtownnews.com and I will do my best to sort you out

GADGET INSPECTOR
Gadget Inspector investigates the case of: The Kymera Wand Remote Control THIS WEEK the Inspector brings a touch of magic to a much used domestic gadget – meet the Kymera Wand Remote Control. Remote controls are a gadget the Inspector has looked at before (Issue 616, Logitech Harmony 900) – but the Kymera Wand remote control brings a whole new dimension for your gadget-zapping pleasure. Everyone is familiar with the traditional remote control - lots of buttons that when pressed change a channel or increase the volume. But that’s a pretty dull way of doing things - what if there were a more fun way of channel-hopping? Welcome to the Kymera Wand remote control… The Wand employs a unique and novel means of sending the remote control commands to the gadget you´re controlling. Different pre-set motions of the Wand can be programmed to send a particular command. For example, a flick to the right can change the channel up, a flick to the left a channel down. Rotate it anti-clockwise and the volume goes down, rotate clockwise and the volume is raised. Abra-flickin-tastic! Totally button-free, the Wand can ‘learn’ up to 13 codes from your existing remote(s) and assign them to the 13 pre-defined gestures. And think of the confusion
if you don´t tell your family what move does what – it’ll probably end up broken in two though. The Wand also features a ‘heartbeat’ in the form of vibrations that tell you when it has understood a command or that the batteries are low. It also goes into ‘sleep mode’ after 60 seconds of inactivity and ‘wakes’ when you pick it up. The Wand is packaged in a smart presentation box and comes with full instructions printed in an olde-worldy scroll effect – much better than the boring old manuals you normally get with a new gadget. All of this adds to the air of mystery and magic that is the Kymera Wand. Unfortunately it can´t magic better programmes on the telly though. The Inspector´s Verdict: The Kymera Wand Remote control will suit fitness fanatics and wanna-be TV controlling wizards everywhere. Costing a very reasonable €64 it won´t require casting a loan spell on your local bank manager either. But we all know what happens when the batteries get weak on a remote control; they either learn how to fly or become a very handy sofa hammer. You can bet some very creative new ‘arm dances’ will be invented when this happens with the Wand - or it´ll become a very expensive chopstick!

Sunburn and how to avoid it... by
Michael Lord BPharm(hons) MRPharmS UK Pharmacist with 20 years experience
MOST PEOPLE will have suffered some degree of sunburn at some time in their life and will know how painful it can be. Exposure of the skin to ultraviolet radiation from the sun initially stimulates the tanning process in order to provide additional protection from more damage. Greater exposure results in skin damage with an inflammatory response, with reddening and swelling. Discomfort is only felt once the damage has been done and can easily be masked by a cooling breeze, especially on the beach. Of course the prevention of sunburn is better than a cure: if you are a sun worshipper then the frequent application of high factor sun protector will ensure that you brown safely. The sun protection factor (SPF) gives an indication of the blocking ability of the product to UVB rays which cause burning and tanning. An SPF of 15 will allow 15x more exposure to the sun than bare skin, so if you would normally start to burn after 20 minutes exposure, an SPF will protect you for 300 minutes (5 hours) as long as you apply it regularly and in sufficient quantity. If you prefer to apply protection only once and then forget about it, then you should look out for ‘once daily’ formulations such as P20 or Calypso once a day. These offer protection for up to 12 hours from a single application even after swimming and excessive sweating. Sun protectors are also ranked for their ability to block UVA rays (responsible for skin ageing) – this is the star rating, with 5* being the highest and 1* the lowest. Don’t forget to apply protection to those easily
missed areas such as the ears, scalp and lips. Specific lip balms with SPF15 or SPF25 are available as are dry oil sprays which are ideal for preventing sun damage to the scalp through thinning hair. Other methods of preventing sun damage: Avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm Cover up with a parasol or loose fitting clothes Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol Wear a hat and sunglasses Use an SPF15+ sunscreen and apply regularly Babies under 6 months should not be exposed to the sun at all.
symptoms as well as relieve the pain of sunburn. Everyone can have fun in the sun as long as adequate protection is used to prevent sunburn and further skin damage, but remember; 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers and 60% of melanoma skin cancers (the most serious type) are thought to be caused by excessive exposure to the sun, not to mention premature ageing! A large range of quality UK sun products are now in stock at Health and Beauty Abroad from only €2.50: Bite and sting relief also available.
If you are unfortunate enough to experience sunburn, what can you do about it? Mild sunburn can be treated with after-sun lotions or Aloe Vera gels which not only relieve the burning, but also moisturise to reduce peeling and preserve that tan. Some after-sun products contain anaesthetics that can relieve painful sunburn, Banana Boat after-sun gel is a popular example. A cool shower can help take the heat out of the affected areas and offer some relief. Moderate sunburn may require the use of painkillers, anti-inflammatories and dressings. Severe sunburn is treated in the same way as any skin burn and hospitalisation may be necessary. Excessive exposure to the sun can result in sunstroke with fever, vomiting and headache - if this occurs drink plenty of water and take Paracetamol or Ibuprofen to help ease the

World treasures I laughed at the book when first I saw the title. It was a Christmas present from Carole Fleury, my friend and Spiritual workshop secretary here in Spain. Could this be true, One Thousand places to visit before you die? Forget the macabre interpretation of Father Time and the Grim Reaper, we are all going to die one day, and that’s a big World out there. As I began to read it I couldn’t help but to take note of how many places I had visited in this current life, and where I should be planning to go before I croak. Fascinating to look at pages of wonderful places to visit, and each one different in its way, and just begging to be visited, by me and all who read it. Our Earthly life has taken us on a journey of wonder as we have explored so much of this World already. Many of us have been drawn to live in Spain and we are here, whilst others will say that they have always wanted to live here too, only for them there is a should’ve would’ve, could’ve, usually followed by a big but. We are born to live on this Planet, and experience has brought travel and adventure, and travel has and does broaden our mind. Eastern Europe is open and beckoning, and budget airlines have brought new destinations to probe and savour. New York is hours away, and long haul holidays are de rigueur. The World is made smaller, and as the Spanish say, The World is really only a pocket handkerchief after all. Spirit has become closer for many of us. This has been adequately brought about by a newly found openness, as people are no longer afraid to discuss their beliefs and experience without fear of humiliation and social out casting. It has become very fashionable to work with our inner souls and to discover various meanings of life that were contained within various doctrines; but which are now free for our contemplation and salvation. The pathway to our consciousness and the power of Spiritual Love is covering the World as we travel around it. I began to read my book in a different way, savouring those places that I had indeed visited and I was shocked at where my journey of life has taken me to. Also, of course comes the realisation that there are places I really do wish to visit, someday, somehow. On a recent trip to the UK I was able to visit Stonehenge, and it was such a wonderful experience. Such a sense exists there that

there is a yet to be uncovered full reason why those standing stones are where they are and the impact that they have to a yearning World of travellers. With the aid of some hot apple juice to stave off cold winds I took many photos of the impacted energy felt on site, and Stonehenge gave me something I cannot explain, allowing me to take something home in the memory bank of my mind. We may bring gifts and treasures with us from the four corners of the World, and they live happily alongside of us with each hopefully a happy memory and a poignant story behind them. Spirit brings us the temerity to collect and adorn our lives with trinkets and keepsakes and these are wonderful jogs to the memory. I spent a wonderful couple of days in the fabulous city of Liverpool. Being a fan I went on a Beatles tour, and saw the tomb of Eleanor Rigby and had coffee in the Barbers shop in Penny Lane, glimpsing Strawberry Fields and Beatle monuments on the way. When I got to John Lennon’s Auntie Mimi’s house where he had lived, it was closed for the Autumn and Winter, so I stood and imagined what life was like then, Apparently the famous four used to play jamming sessions in the outside porch! Well, not much of a souvenir there, but as I left an oak leaf from the front garden floated into my hand, and I have my little leaf still. A very wealthy client wanted to buy me something and asked me what he could buy me. I asked for something that he couldn’t buy, something that he had to find. Something that cost nothing. I asked for a pebble from the beach. Almost immediately he asked me how he would know which pebble, but I gave him no help at all. He went on his around the World trip puzzled, and I forgot all about my gift, until one day a small package arrived with a postmark of Western Samoa. Within was a bizarre volcanic piece of rock with eyes, nose and even teeth. A minute insect was actually living in the mouth of the stone, and how that survived the USA mail I do not know. He passed the test, and my face is the bookmark in my office diary. It was something that would maybe mean nothing to many, but it was found for me, and it means everything, because money couldn’t buy it. I wouldn’t trade it for the World!

postbag Email your letters to me at: kennycorris@roundtownnews.com Kenny I have been having very strong dreams. Part of the dream seems to connect into any dream that I am having, and I am always facing an exam that I haven’t studied for. I just sit there and try to answer the questions but I never can. Will I always keep having this dream? Walter.F. Life is testing Walter. Maybe you are judging yourself, and that’s an examination of yourself in some way. In the dream you cannot answer the questions but the examination wasn’t one that you studied for. And you can’t be blamed. Sounds like you are really being hard on yourself for some reason. Your subconscious has twisted things around the way that it can, and does. Next time you are in that exam room just walk out of the door, hand in a blank sheet of paper, break the spell. I hope that you can stop this dream by yourself, if not contact me and I will help, you do not have to dream this dream ever again!

horoscopes by Kenny Corris Mercury opposes Neptune in the light of Jupiter’s retrograde and you will feel that something is not quite right about an impending matter. This is the time to double check your interests and secure that you are batting for the right side this time around. With all the will in the World you have every right to change your mind since no one could measure the impact that has changed the ground rules. A financial warning looms as actions with Neptune bring reality into a scheme that isn’t working, and may send a message that someone isn’t paying their way, or helping the situation. To avoid that a drama really does become a crisis, ensure that the truth is told and that what is needed is a reality check that all concerned face tightening their belts whether they like it or not. Holding back on making a decision is seeing you treading water and prolongs the agony of a no win situation. You are involved whether you like it or not, and now that the going gets tough there is no excuse to put your fingers in your ears, even though you know that you don’t want to hear just what really has to be said. Right now your actions are what is needed to turn things around. Actions with Mars have prepared you for the worst, but that’s not the issue right now. You are right to do what you had to, and you do not have to explain your need to take control the way that you have. Though the shell may be calling you this is a time to get things done and dusted and you need a clean sweep to eliminate all that negativity and anger stored deep within you. Mercury enters midweek and allows you to better communicate how you are feeling about things just now. You love to take centre stage, but this time the spotlights are not on you, and that is a good half of the problem. As you are coming to terms you realise that even an up hill struggle is better than the compromise that you would otherwise, however be forced to accept. Mercury leaves Leo just in time to make a difference with the inner you. It is time to take a long hard think to establish your priorities because your wants, needs and desires have changed, and you need time and balance to resolve issues that appear not to have been rectified. Someone needs to tell you just what a wonderful job you have made of it all so far: and their love and support will continue. Feeling sorry for yourself won’t help you in anyway, and could slow things down significantly. You need to take a break that allows you to see things from another perspective and allows you to make plans that are productive and inspiring. You never know what you can do until you try, and you are about to have the very best of opportunities to practise what you wouldn’t dare preach. There are portents this week that show you the need to be that shoulder to cry on. Someone is reaching out to you but they don’t seem to be able to put their true feelings into perspective. Love comes on many levels and you really have cleared the way to offer the care needed to help someone well and truly on their way. Don’t wait to be asked, the writing is already there, on the wall. With Jupiter currently on a retrograde kickback your timetable and routine are out of the window for sure this week. You will be very pleasantly surprised that an acquaintance becomes a friend, and where this may lead you both. Above all loosen up, enjoy life and this should be a wonderful time to see the other side of your life which needs spicing up in all directions! Stubborn energies see you staying on until the bitter end, and your determination should be rewarded with current actions involving Neptune direct and Jupiter in retrograde, making it all possible. A time to move on, so long as you don’t see it as running away. There is no need to reinvent yourself, just allow yourself the benefit of the doubt and the wisdom of your capabilities right now. Neptune pays a fleeting call bringing the end of nagging doubts and the start of a fresh way of looking at things. Anything is possible and probable this week as you step over the threshold and see a new horizon. Time to throw away the gloom of past emotional failures and to open your heart with the purpose of making someone welcome within in sooner than later! A project that seems just out of reach just got a whole load closer. You are far more than you think that you are, and there is a call to start something that you have always wanted, but have never been in the right place at the right time to do so. You have absolutely no excuse this time when you know full well that the chance may not come by another time. It’s now or never, go for it!
If it’s your birthday this week... Look before you leap and then don’t look back! Time for some serious soul searching as this astrological year sees you using your instincts to steer you through safely to your destination; and not before time either!

Word Ladders The key rule is that you must only change one letter at a time as you move from one rung to another, and the word you make must be a proper word! Therefore you may move from BATH --> BATS but not from BATH --> CASH because that changes two letters in one go which is not allowed.

Nostalgia is the word: The Cliff & Elvis Tour D O YOU remember the days when Cliff and Elvis were battling it out as the top artists in the pop world? In the UK, many people were crazy about one or the other (especially the girls!) Now, a unique tour will bring them together on stage (something that never happened for the original artists) as the fabulous Cliff-asif and Elvis 2000 tributes star in five shows this September. You will be amazed as these two International tribute artists re-live the 50s, 60s and 70s music of these icons and the three hour shows will have you rocking and rolling from start to finish. Fun loving and witty, Sam produces an exciting programme of songs from the 80s upwards. Big powerful ballads and funky disco songs are her favourites, high notes, low notes - all delivered with emotion and feeling. You will witness the epitome of glamour - no shrinking violet here! Sam
sincerely enjoys performing in sparkly dresses, bangles and beads but none of that detracts from what you hear from this little lady of song. As well as being a solo vocalist, she sparkles once again with her Karaoke shows, more of ‘Cabaroke’ really as she’ll perform an hour of her repertoire before handing over the microphone to Karaoke lovers for them to sing their hearts out too. After many years appearing in pubs and clubs around the North West she is vastly experienced

After listening to just one of his songs you will be spellbound by his powerful voice as he eases his way through a repertoire of fabulous songs that seem to have been written just for him. After a few short years in Spain, Andy has become one of the few acts that everyone wants to hear over and over again. He charms the whole audience with his fine tenor voice especially when hearing the song of the evening, Nessun Dorma, sung with as much gusto as Pavarotti himself. Highlighting a few recording vocalists Andy takes pleasure in singing the all-time greatest hits of Ronan Keating, Mike and the Mechanics, Scott Walker, etc.

The good, the bad and the publicity T here´s a movie just out called ‘One Day’ that stars Anne Hathaway, who is American as you perhaps know, and she tells us that to perfect the Yorkshire accent she needed for the role she watched episode after episode of Emmerdale. “We don’t have programmes like this in the US,” she said, before adding, “…so it was actually quite exotic for me.” Emmerdale - Exotic! However, as excited and positive as Ms Hathaway was, the critics gave her an awful time with Robbie Collin (Telegraph) commenting, “The most honkingly rubbish Yorkshire accent you’ve ever heard,” going on to compare her work with Dick van Dyke’s dire London accent in ‘Mary Poppins’, something that´s recognised as one of the worst offenses against the British accent on the big screen. Peter Bradshaw (Guardian) said, “Ms Hathaway sounds like Geoffrey Boycott in drag,” and Jan Moir (Daily Mail) said, “…nothing can hide the awfulness of her Yorkshire accent.” Strangely enough, as damning as these comments are, it is likely we will all want to see the film for ourselves to make up our own minds, suggesting that whoever said, “There´s no such thing as bad publicity,” knew exactly what they were talking about.
It’s just not cricket
A story leaked out last week about Matt Smith (who? I hear you say…) He’s the guy who plays Dr Who - and the info that has made its way into the gossip columns could well have placed young Smithie in the Sin Bin at the BBC. There are probably not many of us who don’t have a memory of Dr Who to relate, making the role of the great Time Lord one of the most
responsible jobs on British television. You are way ahead of me now I’m sure. Yes, sadly young Mathew went to The V Festival in Chelmsford with girlfriend Daisy last weekend and plundered all the VIP freebee tents consuming great quantities of cocktails and all else which resulted in a rather unpleasant technicolour yawn outside Virgin’s ‘Kensington Roof Garden’ area late into the night. And there’s more... The Doctor and Daisy stayed at the VIP campsite overnight and when they turned up at breakfast, looking decidedly pale it has to be said, instead of eating heartily Daisy sat on Matt´s knee and afterwards a V Festival source said, “They were all over each other: it was a bit much at breakfast!” This event seemed to energise the Doctor as he then went on to help himself to a large box of fruit juice, realised he couldn’t drink it all, and proceeded to throw it at a few other people scattered about the place. Dr Who is an institution, and institutions need to be seen to be behaving in a certain way and I´m not sure what I´m talking about here comes anywhere near to the Doctor and Daisy´s weekend in Chelmsford.
The relentless Ga Ga The latest goss on Lady Ga Ga is that over the last few months she has fitted i to her schedule a voiceover for an episode of The Simpsons, to be screened in the US next spring. She will appear, or at least a drawing of her will appear in ´Lisa goes Ga Ga´ and Lady G said, “I play a little bit of a slut,”- no probs with that role then Babe... It’s at this point that the story goes off the dial as in an interview with Entertainment Weekly the outrageous singer tells us the episode contains a girl/girl kiss with Marge. One gets the feeling that the wildly over the top Lady Ga Ga´s people wrote that bit into the show.
The Lost Symbol THE THING about reading Dan Brown is that you come away replete with little known snippets Book of information about his subject. Review by From the Da Vinci Code we got the lowdown on the machinations of the Vatican Mafia and the Agnus Dei and with The Lost Symbol we copy@dannyjpcollins.com take the plunge into Freemasonry. So you already know about rolling up your trouser leg and drinking wine out of a skull (whose, I wonder?) but did you know about the 33rd level of knowledge, the double-headed phoenix, and the Masonic Pyramid? Well, no, neither did I but Dan Brown does. There’s also a dashing Da Vinci-style escape through tunnels under the Capitol building in Washington. The plot revolves around the Hidden Mysteries that will be revealed by breaking a code on the Masonic Pyramid once it’s reunited with its golden capstone. There’s a nasty tattooed character who kills people in some awful ways. He goes so far as to throw a chubby female IT expert into a tank of ethanol with a preserved giant squid – how’s that for attitude? All in all, Brown is always a good
Danny Collins
read even if his characters are a wee bit two dimensional because what he lacks in injecting charisma he counters by inventing massively intriguing plots. Oh, and the main character is Robert Langdon, the cryptologist who’s been with Brown since Da Vinci. A good holiday book, especially if you can’t decipher the menus… Author: Dan Brown Publisher: Corgi (paperback) Price: 14.20€ ISBN: 978 0 552 16123 7
The Beatles live in Crevillent THE LIVERPOOL Band, a Beatles tribute group consisting of Crevillentinos Jose Manuel Lledo, Lledó and Jesus Ivan Martinez and Jorge Aniorte, a native of San Vicente del Raspeig, are home again after a successful tour including seven performances around the Beatles’ old stomping ground: Liverpool. The group was warmly received by audiences in and around Liverpool, including the iconic ‘Cavern’. “All the shows have gone well,” said one of the band members. The boys came home with a number of contracts under their arms along with the opportunity to tour in Belgium and Holland.

The good, the bad & the downright ugly THE DEPARTMENT of Tourism of the City of Almoradi is organising the following free guided tours to publicize the city in a different way: Saturday 3rd September: The Cultural Route starts at10.30am from the Tourist Information Office in Almoradi. Saturday 10th September 10: The Hermitage Route begins at 10.30am from the Tourist Information Office in Almoradí. At a celebratory party long past, I was attempting to make polite conversation with a fellow party reveller and asked what he did for a living. He said that he was in textiles; further prompting revealed that he was attached to the fashion trade and was closely linked to the high street. After about half an hour he was driving me insane and I still had little idea what the hell he was talking about. Finally, just before I passed out I discovered that he was an area manager for Burtons. Then he asked me one question only, which was what I did for a living, so I told him, which at the time was running a pub. “Oh” he said and that was that, then he walked off. Just at the right time for our industry, although you may not think it with the current economic climate, more TV channels are awash with countless new shows and reruns which highlight the appeal of the food industry from every angle… except the right one. How many times can I stand to hear from young, aspiring and enthusiastic amateur cooks, friends or recent retirees that their dream is to own their own restaurant or guest house, one day soon. Ask where, in this new restaurant of theirs, they see themselves “In the kitchen” or “front of house” and invariably the answer will be “front of house”
of course, with the customers, a familiar and more comfortable place. In fact most think that no training is required for dealing with customers in a social environment. Owners and managers alike who think that little or no training or experience is necessary for them in any area of their business are unable to see the need for it in any of their staff. Try asking some of your staff who they like working with and they will probably say their friend or one they socialise with, but then try asking them who they would choose to work with to complete a difficult task or project and I am sure you will get a different answer. I’m sure everyone wants to have a nice pilot for the flight home but the priority must be a competent one first? In difficult times, when the pressure to perform increases, it is easy to forget that for some of us it is a time of opportunity. Whilst redundancy and low property prices are a devastating and life changing blow to some households, for others the sudden change and redundancy money means the chance of a lifetime to become your own business boss. Whilst some are attempting to stop the slide in trade, working harder to just maintain present levels of trade with special events and pricing
offers which may still eventually hasten the inevitable closedown, others just coming into the trade have the advantage of drive, enthusiasm and the desire to find new trade. You must learn to be a restaurant operator, it’s not a natural gift, you are running a business first which may happen to be a restaurant and you are already nice or not, and if you ever see me at a party and ask me what I do for a living now I’m retired, make sure you have lots of time on your hands as my reply will start with be “In Business, the Food Business.”

GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS at all levels are increasing fines to cover the bills. A friend recently parked in our local pueblo (not blocking traffic) and was fined 200€, with the now 50% discount if paid within 30 days; all designed to speed up and increase cash flows. The fine last year was about €50.
by MEDICALS
Brian Deller
I have had a Spanish licence since 2001 when the law insisted all new residents changed to a Spanish license, though the EU Directive stated it was legal to use an Author of existing EU licence in another EU country. In October Motoring in Spain 2004, the Spanish Government had to obey that Directive. However other rules specified for indigenous drivers had to be obeyed. The main one is periodical medicals. Expats must have the medicals before the specified dates in the table below to avoid his/her licence being deemed ‘expired’(See an official letter in Spanish dated March 2005 on my website: www.spainvia.com/drivelicenceletter.htm.) When I first started taking these medicals in 2006 it took 10 to 15 minutes: cost €25. Now it is €60 or more – extortionate, especially if you have a foreign licence -
the document receipt you are given is valid for only three months. For a Spanish licence it is valid for 10 or five years for the non-commercials, and less if for HGVs etc. Prior to 2009, the three-month licence was issued to allow Trafico to process the new credit-card licences, but of course for a UK licence they can only give you a receipt that you have taken and passed the medical. It should be valid until the next medical (details in the table) - only changing if you have a medical problem discovered during examination. If you are being charged €60 (or anything over €30) for the medical, email me the following details: Date of medical; name and address of the clinic; your name/s; email address; home/mobile telephone number; age; type of licence, (e.g. B for the standard car licence) other classifications, and the address of the clinic. Addresses of all reconcimientos (official clinics) in Spain: www.dgt.es/portal/es/oficina_virtual/ dir_telefonos/centros_rec_conductores/ ?tit=%BFD%F3nde%20se%20puede%20solicitar. Get a Spanish friend to enquire how much the charge is for the medical to see if there is any discrimination being practiced. Email to bjdeller@spainvia.com stating ‘Motoring Medical Cost Survey’.

RTN Golf Club update ITV Orihuela RFC training starts this week Dennis Jordan NORTH REGION
AT LAST! Training started back this week at ITV Orihuela RFC on Tuesday 30th August in preparation for what is looking like a hard season, as we are hoping to be playing in the Murcia league with a total of 10 teams in it, so plenty of local rugby for everybody. It seems to have been a long summer with no training going on… Due to there being a new president in the Valencia region, there is a meeting on 3rd September to confirm decisions with regard to league tables, and the club will know the answer to this and have confirmation roughly 10 days after that, as will all of the other teams in both leagues. So fingers crossed that everything will go through as planned. Updates will be available on this along with the league fixture list as soon as possible. There has still been no response with regards to the signed rugby shirts from Leicester Tigers and London Irish from this season’s squad. The signed Wigan rugby league ball funds are earmarked for the Butterfly Children. Previous items that raised money were a Northampton Saints and Baa Baas v Spain shirts, which raised 1,000€ and 1,500€ respectively. Contact Garry with regards to the above shirts and ball if you know anybody who would want them on 692 767 242. For more details on local rugby and for rugby gear, club shirts, etc, see Garry at the Moncayo Market on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The club trains on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Miguel Hernandez University starting Tuesday 30th August with the seniors starting at 8.30pm. New players are always welcome no matter what age or skill level. For more information contact the club by phoning Garry on 692 767 242 and for the juniors contact Oscar on 600 871 606 (Spanish).

WELL AS I write this report it is raining outside and so perhaps we have seen the start of the change from summer to autumn temperatures here on the Costas. By the time you read this report the summer deals at Lo Romero, La Manga, Font del Llop and Las Colinas will have ended to be followed by many more by MidSeptember and with the hollow tining period being well under way. The deals at Las Ramblas (€155 for 4 players and 2 buggies) and at La Finca (€164 for 4 players and 2 buggies) last through most of the month of September as do the various selection of deals at Vistabella. The extraordinary deal at Altorreal of €55 for 2 players and a buggy continues through September and at present hollow tining is planned for October
AS WE arrive in September a number of the special offers are now behind us, but the Hound is still on the search for some good green fee deals and is pleased to inform you that there are still some lingering offers. Roda is still offering 2 players and a buggy for very reasonable prices throughout the day and even better offers for twilight. Having played Roda just last week, I can confirm that the changes to the par 3, 13th hole are now complete and the course is in great condition. Having dined in the clubhouse afterwards it is easy to see why Roda is such a favourite in the Murcia region. Another course still offering good rates is Las Colinas! Due to the ‘hollowing tining’ this week there are some good rates to be had, but as with most of these offers they will be coming to a close as of the end of next week!

Budget-busting leaky football pitch at Benijófar A very expensive football pitch!
THE CONSISTORY of Benijófar set aside a budget of 440,000€ for the reformation of its football pitch in 2007. Since the pitch was ‘reformed’ it has cost municipal coffers a total of €1.6 million in repairs and alterations to combat subsidence, relieve flooding, and patch over large cracks in the 15-inch-thick concrete walls. A study to determine the cause of the damage found that “an inappropriate use of fillers” caused water to leak from the irrigation network serving the pitch. The City Council has had to carry out repairs with funds from the Employment Fund and Local Sustainability, because the company that performed the work did not respond to complaints - the ruling PSOE had apparently stipulated only one year warranty from delivery - also, the constructors are now immersed in bankruptcy proceedings, according to the PP… Four years on, residents may at last begin to use the pitch without having to train and play at Formentera del Segura Rojales.

A promise is a promise - sometimes! Fishing Maggots End Noel’s world of golf By Noel Eastwell Teaching Professional Campo de Golf El Plantio 639 730 891
FOR MANY months I have promoted the idea of golf clubs giving discounts to those who made regular bookings with them. Whether they are a small group or a golf society a discount should be allowed for loyalty bearing in mind how much money will be spent with the club over a twelvemonth period. I was really pleased to see that many of the local golf clubs were heeding what I said until last week when I was informed of the actions of one golf club manager which can be described only as deplorable. A golf society made a number of bookings for a year that entitled them to the largest discount allowed by that particular course. The bookings were made after a verbal agreement with the course manager. The society arrived to play their first game after the agreement only to be told by the golf course manager that he could remember no such conversation agreeing such a large discount. With the golf society officials now having collected the money from the golfers and promised the members a certain price the officials were now facing a very embarrassing dilemma; pay the extra money or take everyone off the golf course. I know what action I would recommend, and that would be followed immediately by a cancellation of all bookings made for the future. I would also make sure that all the other golf societies in the area were made aware of the despicable behaviour of this individual in an attempt to ensure he would honour all future agreements. I would dearly love to mention the individual here in RTN but I have been made to promise I would not divulge the name of the manager or the golf course involved by the member of the golf society involved. The type of action taken by the individual at this club is the type I thought we had got rid of in golf and gives the Spanish people a bad reputation with the whole of the expatriate
community. In this case I would certainly find out who the course owners are and make them aware of the type of individual they have running their golf course. The owners will take you serious even if you don’t have anything in writing: why would you make such an allegation if it were not true? The lesson here is to only make this type of agreement if the courses are prepared to put the offer in writing, and confirm it with them just to make sure. Make everything crystal clear to avoid further problems of this type. WIN A ROUND OF GOLF FOR 2 INCLUDING BUGGY AT THE BEAUTIFUL EL PLANTIO RESORT IN ALICANTE To enter this competition, simply answer the question below correctly. Every correct answer will be entered into a draw at the end of the month and the winner of this fantastic prize worth over 180€ will be picked at random at the end of each month. Send your entries by email to golf@roundtownnews.com. The decision of the editor of RTN will be final in making the winning selection.

pellet, so a very enjoyable morning. The rubbish of bottles, sweet corn tins, broken chairs and general garbage left by pleasure fisherman and picnickers is just unbelievable - in five minutes I had filled a black refuse sack of waste and brought it home to the local Basura bin, so please do take your rubbish home from all the fishing venues. Anyone with broken poles or rods in need of repair, I have now obtained a substantial amount of broken pole and rod pieces and if you need any repairs please contact me at the telephone number below. All details are available on our website www. abbeyangling.com or from the match secretary Terry Screen on 96 532 8368.
ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS supplied by Terry Screen The 9th round of the Summer Series on 23rd August saw us fishing on the Embalsa at Beniarres. This will be our last visit up here this year as we have no further matches booked. It is a pity as the water has now receded considerably and access is available to all pegs along the shingle beach. It was a very warm and calm morning, but as usual the wind returned on cue at mid-day making it difficult to fish the pole. 1st Stan (The Man) Roberts with 41.800kg fishing the bagging waggler, pole paste and sweet corn 2nd Terry (Swing ‘Em) Screen with 36.860kg fishing feeder and banded pellet 3rd Stuart (I’m married again) Taylor with 23.240kg on pole and feeder with paste and sweet corn I also went pleasure fishing this week with a friend to the Embalsa de Pedrera. The water is now going down leaving dead bushes exposed in the water. We spent half an hour clearing the dead wood from the pegs with a pair of long handled secateurs making 3 or 4 pegs accessible for when the water does rise again - just think of how many pegs would be fishable if all the fishermen spent a little time doing the same. We both caught Carp and Barbel for approx 15 kg in weight each, the best Barbel was weighed at 1.860kg and a Carp of 1.500kg caught on a feeder with sweet corn and
Anglers Together WE HAVE been having a lot of enquiries about licenses from anglers who are passing the ‘magic age of 65’ and therefore pensioners! Licenses are still required and are free providing you have a Spanish Pensionista card; otherwise you will have to pay the normal fees. Licenses are available from either town halls or the Caja Rural Bank if in Valencia region. In Murcia you will also require insurance. Make sure you take photocopies of all relevant documents to obtain your license, i.e. passport photo-page, NIE and insurance. Anglers Together was formed to introduce and encourage anglers of all abilities to meet up and get together to fish, either sea or freshwater. Firm friendships have been formed during the time the group has been active and information on fishing venues and licenses required are available at the meetings or by regular emailed newsletters. Meetings are held in two locations each month. Anyone with an interest in fishing (sea or freshwater) is welcome to come along. The next meetings are: Friday 9th September at 12pm at Mary’s Bar, Campoverde (near Pilar de la Horadada) and Saturday 10th September at 12pm at The New Royal Bar and Restaurant at El Alamillo, opposite the sea-front between Isla Plana and Puerto de Mazarron. There will be some secondhand tackle and magazines available.
