Couple jilted by Jack Troughton

MARIE AND Gary Mead made it to the church on time for their wedding ceremony – but the priest failed to turn up. The newlyweds – they were actually married in Las Vegas – had promised family and friends a more traditional service and had arranged a blessing at the romantic Las Alcazares church. With 74 guests heading for Murcia from the UK and Spain, Marie and Gary carefully planned their big day and a 10,000€ celebration to remember by the sea on 25th August. The invitations had long since been sent out, transport arranged to the church and onto the reception, a photographer booked, dresses fitted for the bride, bridesmaids and flower-girl, and the wedding cake ‘imported’ from England. Marie and Gary had even learnt their responses in Spanish to make the blessing more authentic, were given permission to play a little Elvis Presley in church, and had taken the priest’s advice to delay the ceremony until 6pm when it would be cooler. However, they got to the church only to find it locked. What happened to the priest remains a mystery even though the couple watched him highlight the date in his diary. COMEDY And referring to a hit television comedy, Gary told RTN: “We think the vicar was still in Dibley.” Continued on page 3

continued from front page The couple live in Bristol but have a villa at Mil Palmeras and because other members of the family own Spanish properties decided to have a blessing by the Mediterranean. Marie said: “In the end you just have to laugh but it was unbelievable. We were both married before so could not get married in Spain so we thought why not have a blessing here. “We actually did an Elvis quickie in Las Vegas but did not have any family wedding pictures so thought we would do it properly – my sister was devastated when we got married in the States so I promised we would arrange something here. “I could not believe it when I pulled up in the car and everyone was standing outside – at first I thought I had better go around again just like in the movies.” She added: “At church they just said the priest had gone. It was disappointing because I know we were already married but you want your husband to see you walk down the aisle.”

IDEAL Marie said friends had their marriage blessed at Las Alcazares last year and she and Gary thought it an ideal place for their celebration. “And with people travelling a long way we thought it would be nice to hire a coach and take them round to see a bit of Spain,” she said. “We went to see the priest and he asked if we wanted an English vicar and we said ‘no, because this is Spain’.” Marie said despite the upset they were determined the party should go on and everyone enjoyed sipping bubbly on the beach and the reception at The Olympia, Mil Palmeras. And she said: “I think we have just chalked it up to experience – we would not go through it again, it is surprising how much work went into it when you are thinking keep it simple. It was not done on the cheap but done properly. “You have to laugh, but as long as we have the photographs, enjoyed the party and wearing the dresses I’m happy. I would have liked pictures inside the church, but it is too late now.”

Gang busters POLICE HAVE smashed a determined eight-strong gang of bandits who raided banks across the country posing as customers. While bank staff were distracted, the criminals took the opportunity to snatch cash – and members of the public also fell victim after making withdrawals and were followed out into the street to be robbed. National Police detectives believe the gang netted 65,000€ and swooped in Madrid to arrest five members of the gang last month. Three more were arrested this week in Villajoyosa, where they were alleged to have made a temporary base after two robberies in Cartagena and Almeria.

Remembering 9/11

The new National September 11 Memorial

by Jan Gamm ON SUNDAY the ‘National September 11 Memorial’ is to be opened in Manhatten at Ground Zero to mark the 10th Anniversary of the terrorist strikes in 2001 that took the lives of 2,982 people. The new and elegant memorial features two bronze reflecting pools with constantly pouring waterfalls on the footprints of the North and South World Trade Center Towers, inscribed with the names of the 9/11 victims; a museum; a repository of remains; and a needle-like skyscraper yet to be completed known as ‘Tower 1’, with chamfered corners designed to catch the sunlight, tapering to a point. The sheer scale of the memorial conveys an impression of the number of lives represented. MEANINGFUL The inscriptions on the walls of the pools have been placed not alphabetically but with ‘meaningful adjacency’ according to the wishes of the victims’ families. Colleagues are listed together; strangers that fell hand-in-

hand from the towers; the four flights; fire fighters and police; those who commuted to work every day; the 1993 bomb victims - all have been thoughtfully positioned on the low level pool surrounds in an ambitious project that took over a year to collate and process under the direction of designer and architect Michael Arad. SECURITY Visitors are welcome to the new memorial and may enter free but only on a pass issued via www.911memorial.org where donations may be made to the Memorial Museum. Security, understandably, is a watchword at the new memorial complex that includes unprecedented safety features in the construction of the new skyscraper tower, built within a giant metal ‘cage’ purported to be “impenetrable.” The memorial is open from 12th September 2011 to 8th January, 10am – 8pm, and 9am – 8pm weekends and holidays, with the last entry at 7pm. From 9th January 2012 until 10th March it is open Monday – Sunday, 10am until 6pm, last entry at 5pm.

Lack of Environmental Impact Report halts plans to build on Cala Mosca by Julie Day “NO URBANISATION or building projects will take place on Cala de la Mosca beach in Playa Flamenca without the correct legal permissions or the required licenses and permits that must be granted,” were the words uttered by municipal spokesperson Antonia Morena this week. That also goes for any other type of building project that falls short of the legal requirements. In 2007, the former government of Orihuela, voted out in the recent municipal elections in May and despite opposition from the PSOE and an appeal to the EU, gave the go ahead for 1,800 new homes to be built in a first-line position on the Cala Mosca beach, the only virgin coastline left on the Orihuela Costa and practically in the whole of the southeast of Spain. They were asked to produce an environmental impact report by the EU to which they responded by saying that it wasn’t necessary to have one since the Cala Mosca development project was started in 1984 - a year before a 1985 European directive stated that all projects of this type required an environmental impact report. It has now come to light that the project actually first appeared in the PGOU (General Urban Development Plan) in 1990. Further petitions from the EU resulted in ignoring the correspondence or giving ‘unclear’ answers. The new government in Orihuela has agreed to fully cooperate with EU and has already informed them that the environmental impact report for Cala Mosca does not exist. Other news given by Morena is that the town hall has been ordered to pay 200,000€ to a local fruit and vegetable producer for the expropriation of some of his land in order to widen part of the N-332. He was initially paid 37,000€ but was unhappy with this amount, so he appealed to the Superior Court of Justice, who awarded him with the higher sum.

Lady falls from scenic tourist train in Torrevieja

A 70-YEAR-OLD woman was seriously injured in Torrevieja on Wednesday when she fell from the carriage of a tourist train near Los Locos beach. For reasons yet to be discovered, the lady fell into the road face down, hitting her head on the tarmac. Although conscious she was not moved until emergency services arrived, following which she was transferred by ambulance to Torrevieja Hospital while local police restricted traffic to the scene of the accident in order to take statements from witnesses.

Claims for breakfast and coffee “immoral” says Orihuela councillor By Jan Gamm THE COUNCILWOMAN in charge of staff expenses at the town hall in Orihuela, Asunción Mayoral, has denounced the behaviour of a number of members of the previous PP staff as “immoral” when it emerged that breakfasts, snacks and meals, even single orders of coffee, had been paid out

of the public purse. “I can confirm that some of the previous team members of government and consultants did not pay for their coffee,” she stated, adding, “There are also bills for breakfast up to the month of June 2011.” The bills, which are outside of allowed meals or protocols, rise to between 100€ and 300€.

Phone numbers published for The twilight zone Zapatero and King Juan Carlos: Wikileaks blames The Guardian by Jan Gamm THE PUBLICATION of more than 250,000 secret cables from US embassies by Wikileaks last Saturday uncovered sensitive and confidential information, including personal telephone numbers for Spain’s Prime Minister José Luis Zapatero and also for King Juan Carlos. The UK newspaper The Guard-

King Juan Carols’ 24-hr number published

Almoradi tour postponed

ian published information dated 30th May 2008 that revealed Zapatero’s personal mobile number and also telephone numbers for the Office of the President and the Crisis Cabinet. The document also specified: “Zapatero does not speak English,” and also discloses the ’24-hour’ contact telephone number for the King’s personal office. Wikileaks founder Julian Assange roundly blamed The Guardian for publishing without prior editing and without protecting sources by keeping the relevant encryption code used to send the documents appropriately ‘under wraps’. Assange went on to declare that all organisations in the media “have their agenda” and that anyone who says that its sole objective is to disseminate news is not telling the truth, and that they “preach a false morality.”

THE TOURISM Council of Almoradí hass announced that Chapels Tour planned for this Saturday (10th September) has been postponed until Saturday 17th September. The tour will start from the Tourist Office in Almoradí 10.30am. For further information or to book a place on the tour, please email almoradi@touristinfo.net or turismo@almoradi.es or telephone 96 678 3442.

by Jack Troughton EMERGENCY ENERGY saving plans in Alicante should knock an estimated 1.5 million euros off the annual electricity bill predict experts in City Hall. The local authority this week began to implement measures to reduce the power supplied to street lighting and the number of lamps actually switched on in the city’s wide avenues. In the first phase of the energy saving plan, engineers are carrying out a “street by street” survey to examine how savings can be made – but it was predicted reducing the power would slash electricity consumption by 40% and switching off lights in the city centre could achieve further discounts. In a number of central avenues this week, power was reduced from 30 kilowatts per hour to 15 kilowatts, in other roads alternative streetlights will be switched on, and in other areas some lights will go out at midnight. A spokesman for Alicante City Council said it was planned to maximise the potential to save money while keeping an acceptable level of lighting “especially in areas with a high volume of pedestrian traffic.”

Zapatero’s number broadcast

Benidorm’s new paseo project under debate THE CITY of Benidorm is engaged in a struggle with the central government to unlock funds for the second phase of the Paseo de Poniente project. “Almost €1 million in funding is held until 2012,” said Juan Angel Ferrer, known as mayor Navarro’s town planning ‘strong man’. Ferrer is urging central government to “release the funds to better enable negotiation, bidding and procurement.”

Rojales town hall does not issue temporary disability parking permits by Julie Day FOLLOWING RTN’S article on the battle to gain a disability badge for a car in Torrevieja and the story of the Blair-Hipkin’s success in this matter, it has emerged that some incorrect information was published. Derek Monks, a councillor for Rojales town hall, contacted RTN to inform us that under no circumstances have they or will they issue a temporary disability badge to those awaiting assessment of the grade of disability. RTN apologises for inconvenience caused to readers by this incorrect information. It seems that each town hall has different rules regarding the acquisition of a disability badge and it is best to find out the regulations from your local town hall what those rules entail. Generally, the application for the grade of disability is made and sent to Alicante, which could take up to

Alicante’s superduper-pooperscooper programme IT HAS been revealed that the city of Alicante uses an incredible 18,000 bags daily in the process of ‘pooper-scooping!’ The urban cleaning service INUSA has given pet owners no excuse for allowing their dogs to foul the streets with the installation of no less than 359 purpose-built receptacles designed to dispose of doggy-doo, with 3,250,000 bags used since the introduction of the clean-up programme in 2004. The Municipal Ordinance provides for fines of between 100€ and 1,500€ for dog owners violating the city’s hygiene code.

18 months or more. We have been informed by the Department of Social Welfare in Alicante, which assesses the level of disability for each case, that in cases of urgency such as with the Blair-Hipkin’s, it is possible to take all the relevant paperwork to their office located at Calle Fernando Madroñal, 52, before 11.30am during the week and the case would be dealt with as quickly as possible. Luckily for Ken and Jennifer Blair-Hipkin, they had a response within a month and were granted the badge. RTN reader Mr Stokes has confirmed that he was issued with a temporary badge, which he has been able to renew each year, from Benijófar town hall, which was given to him immediately on presenting a passport photo, a copy of the medical report and a copy of the application for the disability assessment. After three years he has now been given an appointment in Alicante to be assessed, which will take place in October.

Traditional skills An invitation from Torrevieja exhibited in Redován Football Club by Julie Day Torrevieja Football Club at present competes in the Spanish third division, yet this season there is a great excitement and anticipation amongst the players, management and fans, as it’s the club’s intention to fight for a sufficiently high place in the third division, hoping to reach the play offs for promotion to the second division for next season. The club have already won the first three games of the season and are currently in third place in the league. Every Sunday approximately 600 fans attend home matches at the Vicente García stadium offering support to their team, however, the directive committee as well as the players, would like very much to see this number increased. With this in mind, the directive committee are inviting any local group, club or association to come along to the home game on Sunday 11th September at 6pm.

A dog named ‘Miracle’ A SMALL dog has survived a horrific ordeal after being run over twice on the link road between Elda and Sac near Alicante last week. ‘Yira’, a mixed breed cutie now nicknamed ‘Miracle’ managed to drag her mangled back legs into a ditch where she survived unable to move in temperatures exceeding 30º without water or food for two days before finally being rescued by Sax resident Marie Carmen Brotons. Marie had witnessed Miracle’s terrible accident but had to turn her car around to get back to the scene, in time to see the little dog disappear into the undergrowth. She spent two days searching for Miracle. The local vet has ascertained Miracle is chipped but the owner has obviously abandoned her: there has been no response to calls. Miracle is badly scarred both emotionally and physically but recovering slowly.

Expat calls for boycott by Jack Troughton FURIOUS EXPAT David Walker is launching a campaign against supermarket Lidl after falling victim to sneak thieves in his local store. Shopping at Lidl in Gran Alacant last month, David was relieved of his wallet, bank cards, and 150€ in cash. And now he is calling for people to boycott the supermarket until security is improved on the Lidl shopfloor and in its car parks. Over the years RTN has been told of a host of such distraction crimes at the supermarket – David believes thieves know security is lacking and there are no CCTV recordings. “I was in Lidl at 11.50am on 12th August. It was very busy and I got bumped a couple of times but didn’t think anything of it,” he said. “I got to the check-out and that was it, no wallet. SECURITY “It was quite embarrassing because I worked in security for 30 years. I immediately spoke to the manager but he didn’t

want to know. “But I know at least 15 people who have fallen foul of thieves at Lidl in the recent past.” David said he decided not to waste time arguing but went and cancelled his bank cards before going to the Guardia Civil at Santa Pola to make a complaint. “By the time I got there my wallet was at the police station – minus the cards and cash,” he said. “I could not fault the police, they were absolutely fantastic.” The same evening a holidaymaker came into the Phoenix Bar where David works and complained thieves had stolen 300€, bank cards and passports from her handbag while she shopped at Lidl. EVIDENCE “I have spoken with Lidl’s head office in Spain and they claim there is no duty of care for customers or staff – I tried to argue it was in their interest to improve security. If they were robbed there would be CCTV evidence rather than one word against another,” said David.

“I think these thieves target Lidl because they know it is one of the few supermarkets that does not have CCTV – even though they sell the equipment.” “They must clamp down on these Romanian thieves, they are professionals, and it is their job!” David wants people to be aware of the risk of sneak thieves and hopes people will support his campaign. “The problem is everyone is governed by their budget but is shopping at Lidl value for money if you are losing 100€ or 150€. What annoys me is the complacency of the company itself.”

Family values AN ALICANTE drug trafficking network headed by a woman supported by her father has been broken up by National Police. Run from a La Nucia villa, the gang sold illicit substances – such as hashish, speed, ecstasy and LSD – in nightclubs in Alicante, Benidorm, Villajoyosa, and San Juan. Three people were arrested and charged with drugs offences. Officers also seized a log book, scales, a computer, 150g of amphetamine, 60g of hashish, 60 ecstasy pills, and a number of LSD tabs.

Five times the limit

by Jack Troughton A WOMAN was arrested at the wheel of a car and accused of being five times over the legal alcohol limit for driving. The 32-year-old Chinese national was stopped by officers of the Guardia Civil on the CV-70 in a routine check on the outskirts of Benidorm. After stopping the car at 4.30am on Saturday morning, officers said the driver showed “obvious signs of being under the influence of alcohol” and two breath tests showed 1.29mg of alcohol per litre of breath – five times above the legal limit. She was subsequently charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after the tests were analysed.

Rhinoceros head nicked for aphrodisiac black market A RESIDENT of La Cañada del Fenollar near Alicante recently reported the theft of his stuffed rhinoceros head, on display in his home as a trophy. The head was found abandoned in a nearby ravine and recovered just a few days after the robbery, minus the horns. Rhinoceros horn is a valued ingredient in the manufacture of aphrodisiacs on the black market.

Putting up with the problems WELL IT’S that time of the year again! We now have the annual holiday makers here from Madrid. While we (and Guardamar) welcome our visitors (after all it is their country), why do we have to put up with the problems they bring? I walk my dog around the urbanisations close to my home in Moncayo. One of these urbanisation has a very pretty Calle with orange trees etc. that are very well looked after but during August when our friends from Madrid arrive, their ‘jovenes’ (teenagers) decide that it is their right when they see a blank wall that they can adorn it with their ‘artwork’. For residents it is obviously graffiti and vandalism. The local council never seems to see the need to clean this graffiti up or to make any effort to apprehend the culprits, who should be caught and made to clean their mess up - and while they are doing this

they should be made to wear orange or bright clothing denoting their status. Just the threat of this in major newspapers might possibly deter them (I wonder if any of our Spanish readers could forward this to some Spanish newspaper?) My final gripe is an old chestnut: why do these holiday makers have to bring (in some cases as many as three) dogs along with them? They all enjoy walking their furry friends but don’t seem to bring any receptacles to take the messages away that these dogs leave behind - do they treat the streets in the areas they come from in the same way? I wonder! Finally, Ed, is it possible to obtain any free cleaning material from the town council to clean up this graffiti? Yours hopefully, J Kennet

Listen to what we are saying Can HAVING MY own golf & sports business based in the UK, I always read the golf column in your newspaper, the content of which I have to say is very good. It gives sound advice (the week of 26th August) it was just up my street as I do bring golfers over from the UK but not being an agent I cannot book them direct & receive a booking fee so I always book them in with a local society. However, I have two exceptions to this rule and they are two groups of between twenty to twenty eight golfers. They stay in Benidorm and hire transport to travel to various booked venues. I advised them to start their own societies up and give the societies a name. I block book for these players, sometimes joining them - in most cases they get a free game for the Captain, now and again two games.

These particular groups usually use these ‘free games’ as prizes, i.e. still charge the Captain but use his green fee for prize money. I feel the same as Noel: advise the golf courses to stop the fees these ‘agents’ get and reduce the fees to the local societies (they know who these societies are). You are right, there is a need for these booking agents in cases where it warrants: i.e. the golfers they bring over for holiday golf - but there is no need for the courses to give these agents a booking fee (at some courses they get over 5€ per player) for golf booked for the local golf societies. Hoping you print this and that the golf courses listen to what we are saying. John Thompson UK Golf & Sports -staying in Playa Flamenca for the next two months.

anyone help?

HI, MY name is Mike Thompson and I’m a chef. A friend of mine’s son is out in Afghanistan and he has requested some sauce sachets as they don’t have ketchup, mayo, curry powder, brown sauce, mint sauce, horseradish and so on. I thought I’d send a jiffy bag with maybe 10 of each. Asking around the bars in La Siesta, the response has been great but what do I do if I get a crateful?! Any help would be welcome! Mike (AKA ‘Chuff’)

UNFORTUNATELY THE Campoverde Theatre Group is to leave the Olympia Restaurant after six years of putting on shows there. They are urgently looking for a new venue, preferably with a stage and changing rooms already in situ or a venue that will allow them to erect the wonderful stage they already have along with spotlights. Their final showat the Olympia is in October. If anyone knows of such a place, please get in touch with Colin by phoning 96 677 4127. In the meantime, the group would like to thank all of you who have supported them over the years and hopefully they will find somewhere soon to continue with their shows. 50€ MAN: This man has been visiting the Costa Blanca for many years. He has again migrated to the Villa Martin Area of the Orihuela Costa, knocking on doors and asking for money. WHAT HE DOES IS NOT AN OFFENCE UNDER THE SPANISH LAW. He knocks on doors asking for money to pay for a locksmith as he has either ‘lost his house keys’ or had his house ‘broken into’. He says that he is ‘living in a house close by’ and gives his address. The house selected is unoccupied at this time and is not his. He has to ‘pay the locksmith’ and ‘can´t get enough money from a cash machine to do so’. The locksmith will not leave until he is paid in full. Over the years he has asked to borrow 30€, 50€ and now 40€. If you are lucky you may be invited to attend a party at his house or to go there for a drink. Another story is that he needs to go to the German Embassy in Alicante with his children and asks to borrow the money to get there. He is very plausible in his tale and may change his story. Description: German or Scandinavian, in his forties, tall, with fair hair - previously scruffily dressed. He speaks perfect English. He has said that he is from Hanover in Germany but this might again be part of his tale. Advice: People are warned not to be taken in by this man and not to give him money. 40 fires and 80 acres Torrevieja FC burned by the same signs new player arsonist

Fire north of Mata lagoon

by Jan Gamm SHOCKING INFORMATION has emerged that 40 fires that decimated more than 80 acres over the last three years in the lagoon area north of Mata in the Vega Baja may be attributed to the same arsonist. He struck again on Wednesday prompting fire fighters to be called out to extinguish yet more of his handiwork consisting of four fires in pine forests within the Nat-

ural Park, south of Rojales. The fire starter ignites his fires amongst dense vegetation using a truck to move from laying one fire to set another in quick succession, therefore starting a chain of fire that is difficult for fire fighters to put out. Wednesday’s outbreaks were 100 and 200 metres apart, set at around 6am, extinguished by 11am with the help of a helicopter, two planes and fire engines from four fire stations in Torrevieja.

By Julie Day TORREVIEJA FOOTBALL Club has signed a new player to its team in the shape of centre José Prior Pérez. This is most likely to be the last signing of the 2011- 2012 period. Pérez has played in the second division on a number of occasions, after winning four of the five playoffs resulting in promotion for his teams at the end of football season. Originally from Barcelona, he has previously played with La Roda CF; Atlético de Baleares; Alzira; Gandía and Levante B. “I like the structure of the club. Its goal is to go up in the league and winning the first couple of matches says a lot about the club’s aspirations. There’s a good group of players, both professionally and personally,” explained Pérez when asked why he had decided to accept Torrevieja’s offer. The club’s newest player trained for the first time with his new colleagues last Wednesday and sailed through the medical without any problems.

Aguirre on Rubalcaba and education – and mistakes by Jan Gamm PRESIDENT OF the PP in Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre, said on Wednesday that the strike called for next September in the education sector of the Community of Madrid is “absurd, irrational and patently political” and “a rehearsal for the opposition and unions when we win the election - but our backs are strong.” Aguirre accused the PSOE’s electoral candidate, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, of being “ultimately responsibility the deterioration of education in Spain. All the education laws that have degraded education in Spain are the responsibility, in varying degrees, of Rubalcaba.” Doña Aguirre then added an apology for her own “mistake” in referring to teachers’ 20 hour working week: “It was incorrect: the hours total 37.5: I know the working hours of Esperanza teachers - I made a mistake and I admit it.” Aguirre

of visitors to Toledo-Avila-Aranjuez: Increase Orihuela’s monuments and museums Autumn 2011 by Patricia Thompson Toledo, once the capital city of Spain, is still regarded as the country’s religious capital with its fortified city walls bearing testament to the many struggles for power. Enter by Bisagra Gate (meaning ‘blood gate’) and you are immediately surrounded by medieval Spain. Damascene Jewellery, originating in Damascus, is still produced here by tradesmen whose families have practised the art for generations. Toledo steel products, such as knives, swords and jewellery, are much sought after. The city was the centre of the Spanish inquisition and appropriately built round a massive and extremely ornate cathedral. Toledo played a major role in the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War - this part of Spain is scarred by countless battles. Travelling not too far from Toledo you find the city which produced the patron saint of Spain, the city of Avila. The determined and fiery Santa Teresa formed the Carmelites and ruled the order with a hand of steel, taking on all comers, including royalty. Odd for a girl who ran away from home in an attempt to marry against her father’s wishes and had to be pursued and returned home by a determined uncle. This city has what is regarded as the best preserved medieval city walls in the western world and a cathedral which is somewhat smaller than the one in Toledo, offering the chance to visit the home of Santa Teresa. Not far from here is another very different city - Aranjuez. There are no city walls here, nor is there a prestigious cathedral. Instead you have sumptuous palaces, reminiscent of the French Palace of Versailles. Fountains, flower beds, and broad-leafed trees fill Aranjuez

Raquel scissor hands by Jack Troughton YOUNG HAIRDRESSER Raquel Martinez Garcia has proved herself to be a cut above the rest after being chosen to represent Spain in an international competition. The 19-year-old from Alfaz del Pi and a student of IES Bernat de Sarria de Benidorm will compete for a gold medal against young stylists from 26 other countries in October. Raquel, who has worked in a number of salons, pits her skills against other students in the hairdressing section of “World Skills” – an Olympic-style competition for students of vocational training. And while the excited teenager is going for gold, she is no stranger to the podium – already having been voted the best in Valencia last year and this April winning gold in the Spain Skills national championship in Madrid.

It’ll be ’ell at El Altet Watts In Britain without ’em By

OH DEAR, I’m in trouble again. Alexander, a chum of mine who works for Ryanair is very cross with me over last week’s article. He mistakenly thinks I was having a ‘pop’ at his company. “And as for you Watts,” he rants, “you wrote ‘yer’ instead of ‘were’ and had at least three other typo mistakes in your shabby piece...” Ouch Sandy, please calm down. Look, in defence I was not having a ‘pop’ at your airline I was merely musing on queuing. I just thought it ironic that a budget airline has a two-class queuing arrangement. And regarding my typos Sandy I’ll just say, in admittedly weak mitigation, that I’d mistakenly submitted my first draft and not my ‘finished’ version to the editor. I know a poor excuse; so okay Sandy, you’ve got me there old son. One thing that Sandy forgets though, queuing issues aside, Ryanair is my preferred provider of transportation. It really is. I’ve used them more than the others and can truthfully state that I have never experienced a behind-schedule flight. They always manage to get you where you’re going at the published time. The aircraft, although sans frills (no films or filling meals etc), are clean, comfortable and provide reasonable legroom. And the crews are lovely... aren’t they Sandy? Look folks, far from wanting to have a ‘pop’ at Ryanair I’m a little anxious concerning rumours about them leaving El Altet. In fact whilst in the ‘priority’ queue last week (yup, I paid ’em the bit extra) one fellow ‘queue-er’ - or is that ‘queue-ee’ – told me that he’d heard the airline was thinking of abandoning Alicante altogether. “What? No, this can’t be...” I stammered, “It must be just another rival inspired rumour.” I remember a while back a competitor starting a rumour about the airline proposing to charge for using the loo (a sort of sky-high-tinkle-tax). That rumour proved to be groundless. In fact it even got as far boss man Michael O’Leary stating categorically that no way would the use of toilets on his aircraft be subject to a ‘no fee, no wee’ charge. Anyway, in something fast approaching panic I searched ‘Tinternet’ for newspaper reports about this El Altet rumour. To my horror there it was, way back on April 5th, a statement from the company that went as follows: “Ryanair today announced deep cuts of up to eighty percent of its Alicante base from October 2011.” Yikes, that’s next month! Apparently, according to the chap in my queue AENA (operators of Alicante airport) are grabbing additional service charges from airlines, for all sorts of reasons. I suppose AENA have got to pay for the massive renovation somehow. Ryanair’s objection is the imposition of mandatory ‘air-jetties’. Ryanair do not use them at other airports and do not want to be charged “over €2m p.a. for these unnecessary facilities” at Alicante. They simply prefer the cheaper option of stairs. Hmmm, I’m with them on that point as I quite like the idea of walking up or down the steps to an aircraft. It gives me the chance to give my plane the ‘once over’ before I climb on. You know, check the tyres etc. And if I’m disembarking I like the feel of the sensations of a different country in my fissog. You get the feeling of properly having arrived at a foreign destination when you stand at the top of those steps, don’t you? I think it preferable to those drab, sterile, could-be-at-any-airport walkways. Plus, sometimes you get to see the aforementioned Sandy skipping up those air stairs. However, leaving the romance of travel to one side, AENA still plans to enforce its decision and are “demanding that Ryanair use air bridges.” So, what will a Ryanair reduction at El Altet actually mean? Well, for a start eighty percent means downsizing their base fleet from eleven to just two aircraft. It’ll mean the loss of 31 routes from the current 62 (that’s from over 600 flights to less than 200 on the weekly rotation) and passenger levels will drop from over 4M to less than 1.5M yearly. The knock-on from that lot could cost the loss of over 2,500 jobs at El Altet. Ryanair have stated that they’re still committed to serving Alicante airport and even with fewer passengers and routes will continue to be the largest airline there. Chairman Michael O’Leary said, “We hope that the Spanish Government and the EU Commission will support our complaint against this abusive behaviour by AENA Alicante and we have assured Spain’s Transport Ministry that if AENA Alicante reverses this foolish decision to force Ryanair to pay €2m p.a. for airbridges... then these deep cuts in routes, traffic and jobs can be reversed.” Oh let’s hope so. Watch this space folks... or have your say at p.watts@roundtownnews.com Watts in Birmingham, skipping down the rain-speckled airstairs

Civic war ALICANTE CITY Hall has declared war on vandals after hooligans destroyed a plaque to commemorate those who died in a Spanish Civil War atrocity. The plaque at Plaza 25 de Mayo was erected just four months ago to mark where 300 were killed in 1938 when the city was bombed by Franco’s fascist forces. Councillor Adrian Santos said the local authority “will not permit acts like these that threaten the memory of the history of our city.”

The King home again after more surgery

by Jan Gamm HIS MAJESTY King Juan Carlos was home again at the La Zarzuela Palace on Monday after undergoing surgery following an Achilles tendon rupture in his left foot. An autograft under epidural was carried out by Dr Angel Villamor. The King has been wearing an orthopaedic boot since he ruptured the tendon while attending an anniversary dinner at the Club Nautico in Palma de Mallorca. The surgery follows a separate right knee replacement operation on the King three months previously.

GABY NAVARRO, a 37-year-old from Elda, owns what is possibly the largest collection of Star Wars memorabilia in the World. The collection was born long ago in a galaxy far away – about 1978 – when Gaby saw the first of George Lucas’ Star Wars series of movies. He was hooked and now the basement of his home is a cult shrine to the Force, featuring some 30,000 figures, 500 comics and dozens of Star Wars costumes including an enviable collection of Darth Vader helmets. Entire battalions of legionnaires along with a complete arsenal of ‘light sabres’ crowd cabinets and floor space in Gaby’s basement as well as hundreds of books

and magazines in a score of different languages – one of the World’s finest Star Wars archives. OUT IN FORCE The Spanish garrison of the 501st Legion (an army of Star Wars enthusiasts) plan a spectacular parade in November, with details yet to be announced. Also the 501st will be ‘out in force’ on 13th September at Fnac in Alicante to entertain and add a touch of imperialism to the launch of the latest Star Wars movie in Blu-ray format. For more information visit www.cine.fnac.es When Gaby was asked how much has been spent on his collection he modestly replied: “Quite a lot.”

Faith’s new American leg by Patricia Thompson AT LAST the long-awaited prosthetic leg made in America for Faith at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has arrived. Kate and Solvi Jensen, who worked tirelessly to sponsor and support the Centre, are both pictured alongside Faith proudly modelling her new leg. Dwayne Mara in Louisiana, America, designed and made Molly the Pony’s prosthetic leg. It took Dwayne 5 legs to get the design right for Molly, finally developing the latest which can bend at the knee and allow Molly to walk with ease and even trot. This is Faith with her first leg made by Dwayne. It was thought better to start her off with a straight leg, which is what she has been used to up until now. This leg will always be used as a

travelling leg as it has a lot of support. The second leg, which will allow her to use her knee again, is being made now and expected to arrive in 3-4 weeks. Each leg costs €1,500, a very special price as Dwayne charges nothing for his time. Faith and all at the rescue centre would like to say a big thank you to all who have made this possible. Without your support, she would have lost her fight for life. The centre is open to the public all year round every day 1-4pm. On Sundays and Wednesdays there are guided tours and visitors can also enjoy light refreshments available in the café garden; all proceeds go towards the support of the centre which relies totally on donations. Spanish lessons by Go placidly along the Spanish roads.

Jane Cronin

Amid the noise and haste, remember that it is always better to hesitate at

A weekly ‘cut out and junctions, keep’ feature helping you to learn basic Spanish even when you have right of way, than risk a traffic accident. for everyday needs When other drivers do not indicate,

this is no excuse for you not to do so, and do not try parking badly, you will not get away with it.

Avoid setting yourself time limits, you will find them impossible to keep to. When dealing with bureaucracy, calculate the time you expect it to take, and multiply it by six. Never assume that you have all the correct pieces of paper with you the first time, there will always be at least one photocopy missing. Keep interested in learning a bit of Spanish every day. Even with a few words you can make yourself understood and make new friends. Exercise caution in your home security as well as when you walk along the street. The world is full of trickery and if you are inattentive in public places you are making yourself more of a target. Do not let bad experiences embitter you. Always remember there are good people and bad people everywhere in the world. Be yourself, especially do not presume to know more than you do about local plumbing, electrics or the postal system. These are mysteries understood by very few. Do not take people at face value. Remember that different cultures have different ways of doing things and do not be too quick to judge. Take kindly to advice as you are going to need plenty of it. Just make sure that the person giving it has some sort of authority, and is not merely the latest expert who has just got off the plane. You are a child of the universe You have as much right to be here as anyone else, and whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt your property purchase, bank transactions or internet connection are unfolding as they should provided you have the right person dealing with them. Therefore relax and be at peace with yourself in your new life. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Whatever hurdles you have to overcome and setbacks you have experienced, remember many others have been through them before you and are now living in peace. With all its bureaucracy and inefficiency it is still a beautiful country to live in with some wonderful people to meet. Be positive and open to new experiences. Strive to be happy.

Linea Directa introduces a new service LÍNEA DIRECTA Aseguradora is the market leader in the sale of insurance for foreign residents in Spain. Since 1998 it has offered its customer services in English and German, which include handling claims, selling policies or road assistance, among many others. Francisco Valencia, Corporate Governance Director, introduces us to a new service: fine management. Francisco Valencia: “For Línea Directa, Expatriates form an essential part of our strategy” Línea Directa was the first Spanish insurer to offer its services in English and German. Why this commitment to Expatriates? For Línea Directa, Expatriates form an essential part of our strategy. Since we set up Línea Directa, in 1995, we have forged close links to them, due to the fact that our company model was imported directly from England, and as a result offering services specifically designed for them was something quite natural. We currently have a portfolio of

over 1.85 million policyholders, 64,000 of whom are foreign customers.

One of the latest services offered to Expatriates is fine management. What does it consist of and what advantages does it have? Our service offers the foreign customer advice on traffic fines in his or her own language, including notification of the official bulletins, a benefit specifically designed for Expatriates. In Spain, when the person receiving the fine is not at home, he or she is considered to have been notified of the fine after it has been published in the Official Bulletin of the province where he or she resides, thereby reducing or even eliminating any chance of defence for someone who spends many months of the year abroad. What does this service cover and what other benefits does it include? Apart from the benefit that it can be used by any driver over 26 years of age, the cover also includes a payment of 500€ to

Spain tightens its belt at the pumps PETROL CONSUMPTION in Spain dropped by 8.4% in July; diesel fell by 6.6% despite the government calling a close to its motorway speed restriction of 110kph. In fact the fall in petrol consumption was sharper than when the speed limit was capped. Petrol consumption in Spain has been creeping slowly downward since 2007. Economists’ opinions are that the drop may be attributed to the tightening of family budgets in the credit crisis.

Oh no not again: The Property Road Show goes back on the road

DESPITE PUBLIC criticism over its ‘Property Road Show’ in May this year and property experts cringing in disbelief, the Ministry for Development intends to repeat the tour of European capitals in a bid to sell some of Spain’s unsold property stock. The May attempt at marketing Spanish properties was a fiasco and brought scathing headlines and also a petition to bring the road show to a halt with advice NOT to buy in Spain’s ‘unstable market’ – the exact opposite of the desired result! Minister José Blanco will again take part in the tour, accompanied by real estate companies and banks. The second tour is to begin in Germany, visiting the same countries as before: the UK, France, Holland and Sweden.

A holiday home - what a luxury! by

Suzanne O’Connell Customer Care at Ábaco

WHAT KINDS of holidays did your parents have? If you are in the over 40s bracket, it’s likely that they didn’t go on holiday much at all - perhaps a few days in Blackpool, Scarborough or Westonsuper-Mare. If they were lucky they might even have managed a week or so in a slightly warmer climate. But people’s expectations have changed. More than ever, people work to holiday and expect a vacation that at one time might have been the preserve of the rich and famous. Everyone believes themselves entitled it seems to weeks away somewhere tropical and exotic. Many people even have the luxury of a holiday home. You might be one of them. Open up any discussion in the UK and mention you have a house in Spain and chances are that someone else or someone they know will have one too. Holiday home ownership here is big business but I didn’t

realise just how big until I visited this website. The Spanish economy, www.thespanisheconomy.com is actually, to my untrained eye, an accessible website that includes information even I can understand – in English. By means of separate slide presentations it shows what the Spanish government is doing and intends to do to balance the budget and regenerate the economy. For those with a financial interest in Spain who aren’t numerically challenged, it is worth opening it up and taking a look. One slide, in particular, clearly illustrates one of the big issues for the country: 67% of the housing sector comprises of main residences and 33% of vacational housing - a percentage only just surpassed by Greece with Portugal not far behind. We’ve seen the difference this summer. Streets that are deserted for 11/12 s of the year, suddenly coming to life. Having such a large number of houses that are populated for perhaps only a few weeks here and

there has its downside. It’s more difficult for local businesses to staff and resource themselves efficiently across the year and the vacationing family doesn’t perhaps bump up local government coffers during their fleeting visits. Council tax is very low here. Compare around £1,000 per year for a property in England with €200 for a similar property in Spain. So we really shouldn’t complain about the slight additional cost of imputed income tax for non-residents. But we do. Just in case you were blissfully unaware, this is an additional tax that non-residents who don’t rent out their property are obliged to pay by law to the Spanish government. At around €105 on an €80,000 house it’s still a bargain, it’s definitely a luxury and its many miles from Blackpool too. Don’t be caught out. Ábaco can help you if you weren’t aware of this tax. Call the ÁbacoConnect Help-line: 96 670 3748 - www.abacoconnect.com

A Spanish Will is a MUST by

Carlos Baos

of White & Baos Abogados English & Spanish Solicitors

DO YOU have a next door neighbour who seems to know all there is to know? What if he is giving you advice about something he has NEVER had the opportunity to experience, like his own inheritance process? Reading this can make it sound like a joke but it is a very serious matter that will obviously not affect the person who passes away, but can cause great distress to their loved ones who will have to deal with an Inheritance while trying to get through very difficult times. They may also have to pay significantly more in the way of Inheritance tax then they might have done. In order to make the Spanish Inheritance Process smooth and easy a Spanish Will MUST exist: no matter what you have heard, what you have been told, or what you have read, there is no question about it - if you own a property or have assets in Spain you need to have a Spanish Will. A Spanish Will is drafted in accordance with your national Law anticipating any possible changes of the European Law. There can also be a mirror English Will for assets located in the UK if needed (depending upon the case). There is no need to wait for the English Inheritance Process to

be finalised before starting the Spanish Inheritance Process. This means the beneficiaries will be able to comply with the 6 months period given by the Spanish Authorities to pay the Inheritance Taxes IHT. The Spanish Will should be drawn under the advice of an Anglo-Spanish / International Law Firm, knowledgeable of Spanish Inheritance Law and Tax, and also of your national Law, (i.e. English Law if you are English, etc). It is a cost effective way of simplifying the handling of your affairs. If your Spanish Will is correctly drafted by an expert IHT lawyer the Spanish Inheritance Tax can be greatly minimised. There is no need for a person named beneficiary in a Spanish Will to have an NIE number when he is named, however the same person needs to have an NIE number in order to be able to inherit when the time comes. The percentage to be paid for Inheritance Tax in Spain depends on some of the following facts: The type of estate to be inherited. Whether the deceased was a tax or a non-tax resident in Spain. Whether the deceased was a resident or a non-resident in the Valencian Community (Castellon, Valencia or Alicante). Whether the beneficiaries are resident or non-resident in Spain and/or in the same Autonomous Community than the deceased. It is possible for family members named beneficiaries to benefit from a tax reduction. Some of the questions that regularly arise on this subject are: Banks freezing assets in Spain after death. Do more beneficiaries in a Will mean a bigger tax reduction?

Does the Executor (Albacea, contador, repartidor) of a Spanish Will need an NIE number? For the reasons described above if you or a family member have assets in Spain and have not yet drawn your Spanish Will we advise you to do it as soon as possible. Or at least get some advice about the possible consequences of not having a Will in Spain. We will be more than pleased to assist you. Who to believe

by

Chris Marshall

www.almerimarlife.com

I SUSPECT that many a real estate agent in Spain will be tightening their belt yet another notch for this winter looking at the general flavour of the recent headlines relating to Spanish property. For sure there are some positive spins being put on stories, and a few half-hearted attempts to disperse the gloom but it impossible to avoid headlines such as: Home sales in Spain fell in June by 7.7% from the previous month and by a whopping 22.9% compared with June 2010. Sales of existing residences accounted for 51.3% of the 28,612 transactions concluded in June, which was the fourth consecutive month of inter annual declines. The positive response to this news? During the last three decades, hundreds of thousands of Britons have purchased property in Spain. Nonetheless, a surplus of villas and apartments has spawned due to mortgage defaults from British buyers. By noting the declining property prices during the month of June one can see the opportunity to purchase Spanish property at a low price. To be fair that is true, but when you turn the page and see the rest of the story: Despite the falling prices of property in Spain, Spain’s status as an advanced Western European country renders it a safe investment, as it continues on Europe’s path to economic recovery. As Spain will continue to have superb weather and a developed economy, to buy Spanish property would be the epitome of the much

heeded advice: “Buy low, Sell high.” Safe Investment? Path to Economic Recovery? Really! Sure, the weather is great, but I am sure many would argue long into the night against the other two ‘benefits’. It is a sad fact that ever since the Spanish property boom, Spain has been dogged by horror stories of expats buying property in good faith yet falling foul of Spanish planning laws and unscrupulous developers. There is some good news though as under new measures, expat investors will now able to request a Land Registry certificate in English at a cost of £29 from their local Spanish town halls. In doing so, they will be able to see whether there are or have been any legal proceedings against the property, such as proceedings which may result in fines or demolition. It is hoped that this development will reduce expat investors’ reliance on solicitors and allow them to take charge of the due diligence checks. If town halls fail to provide this information they will be held responsible for economic damages affecting third parties who bought in good faith. This is important because despite the overall decline in property sales to expats the Brits still remain the largest market as more than 4,500 Britons registered Spanish house purchase deeds last year, down from 12,419 in 2008, when the economic crisis began and house prices plummeted. Again not as good as it may seem though, as look back

even further to 2006 and sales to the British have collapsed by 80%. Back then the British bought more than 23,000 Spanish properties a year and represented about 70% of the expatriate holiday-home market. So what is being done about the on-going problem? To be honest, not a lot! The government have said they will temporarily halve the sales tax on new homes to 4% to try to stimulate the construction sector, but with over half of the current sales of property in Spain re-sales of existing properties, this isn’t going to help the majority of current potential buyers. Many financial institutions in Spain are very keen to offload some of the property they have acquired and sell real estate to new buyers with cash available when previous owners have defaulted. Some banks are even offering 100% mortgages with nothing to pay for 3 years in an effort to offload some of their distressed assets. Again the focus seems to be more of relieving the banks of a problem as a lot of these distressed properties are incomplete or in sparsely populated communities so offer a very poor investment opportunity over the short to medium term. This may not be a bad thing as taking a longer term view when investing in property is the sensible approach, but for those with any disposable income to hand at the moment I suspect that the short to medium term would be what appeals. www.almerimarlife.com

Living well from your garden by

Clodagh & Dick Handscombe Practical gardeners and authors

SCANTILY PLANTED gardens probably offer at least some citrus fruit to enjoy fresh or juiced at various times of the year, especially if the garden has been made a chemical-free garden and there are therefore no chemical residues on or inside the peel and pith. If there are a few herb plants around, even if only rosemary and thyme that were not destroyed by the builders activities and piles of building materials, most have wellness as well as culinary benefits. If you have a densely planted garden you probably have year round colour and perfume and also an interesting mix of edible flowers leaves; fruit; vegetables and in some cases chickens for eggs and perhaps meat. If you had arrived in Spain in the 1970s you would have found few gardens influenced by the ‘English garden syndrome’ of vast mixed beds and you would have found gardens or back yards with a good mixture of local herbs and live stock. Vegetables and fruit still grew then on an allotment or ‘huerto’ in the land surrounding a village or town. Garden centres, rather nurseries in those days, had fewer stocks of plants but what they stocked generally lived. Just thinking about our own garden almost all the plants planted before 1990 are still thriving. But many of the new offers that we tried out to complete the plant charts in

our various books are no longer around, generally demolished by heavier frosts than expected, especially in February 2005. If you are new to Spain this year the highest and lowest temperatures we have experienced in our garden are plus 47 down to minus 15 degrees centigrade. Also months without rain and then 67cm in a day! Yes, that’s two feet of water in a day, ten inches of which fell in an hour - that was in November 1996! Recognising that the price of flowering plants and trees don’t go down, many expats are venturing into the growing of more fruit and herbs. Next week at the Parcent Autumn fair we will be launching a new book. The title is ‘Living Well from Our Mediterranean Garden’ and it is a natural follow on from our earlier books. Being only 40 pages it is priced at just 3.90€. But as you will see it is packed with interesting and useful info. One of the reasons it has been published is a reminder to us of the many things we have learned over the years, especially regarding the wellness benefits of some 180 of the plants and livestock that we have enjoyed from the garden. You can grow some or all of these even if you only have a small patio, terrace or rooftop. If you are coming to Parcent 24th / 25th September, copies of this book and our previous quartet of books will be available, plus a few comfrey plants as we are always asked for them. At various times of the day Dick will be giving a number of talks as well as answering your gardening questions on the gardeners’ corner stand throughout the two days, exactly when we don’t yet know from the organisers, but there will be plenty to keep you occupied around the village at other times. See you there. Clodagh and Dicks regular quartet of books are available from

Last chance at 550,000€ in grant monies until 30th September IN OUR issue of 17th June RTN brought you news about the Valencian Government’s air conditioning replacement grant scheme. The Agencia Valenciana de la Energía (known as AVEN) launched its ‘Plan Renove Air Conditioning 2011’ whereby €1.2 million was put aside for a replacement scheme designed to offer incentives of up to 500€ per person in an effort to encourage homeowners to replace old air conditioning units, (irrespective of age & model) when exchanging them for a ‘Class A’ rated unit. Of the original €1.2 million available, €650,000 has been allocated, meaning that there are funds still available amounting to €550.000. Grants range from €150 to €500 per person, calculated relative to the KW output of the unit to be swapped, available until 30th September, after which the Plan Renove Aire will close. Everyone residing in the Comunidad Valenciana, whether English, Spanish or any other nationality, is eligible for a grant, which is given at point of sale and later reclaimed by the retailer. The scheme allocates the funds on a first-come-first-served basis.

In order to qualify the beneficiary will need to provide a copy of their residencia or NIE plus a copy of their passport. They also need to give up their old air con unit so that it can be recycled and so that the refrigerant can be disposed of safely. As with similar schemes, the installations must be carried out by an ‘instaladora RITE’, licenced and authorised to carry out airconditioning installation & maintenance and registered with the Ministry of Industry. Michael Smeed from 100% Plumbing explains: “Studies highlighting the damage caused to the ozone layer by the HCFCs contained in older units gave cause for the R-22 refrigerant to be outlawed some years ago and as a result it has become more and more difficult to find technical assistance for these older units. This coupled with the modern energy saving possibilities means that there has never been a better time to upgrade and benefit from quieter, safer and more energy efficient systems.” For more information call 100% Plumbing (Empresa Rite, Instalador Gas A.) on 96 583 5939 before 30th September.

Using Dell Dimension 9200

Computing with aunty virus

Like a jack-in-the-box

Meri via email asks: HI AUNTY, I am confused. The Gmail page now looks different - is this correct? I have also got Adobe wanting to take over and it just keeps popping up on the screen, it won’t do anything else and it was rather like a Jackin-a-box! Am I doing anything wrong? Aunty Says: Google have been updating some of their Gmail services Meri so maybe it was one of those that changed the appearance, what exactly is different? You can of course change the look and some of the function via the ‘options’ icon in the top right corner (looks like a cog). The adobe message may well be a reminder that some of you Adobe applications, such as Flash Player and Adobe Reader need updating. I would go ahead with the updates as a lot of websites use Adobe Flash as their video player and an increasing amount of documents are using Adobe’s .pdf file format, which by the way stands for Portable Document Format.

Lost pictures Neville via email asks: JUST RECENTLY I have lost most of my pictures that have been sent to me via email and even ones that were there previously have now become just a blank square with a small red X in the top left hand corner. I have Windows 7 and I am using hotmail, the problem seems to have happened since I installed a new HP Photosmart printer a couple of weeks ago. I assume that my computer is now failing to recognise certain file formats but I am at a loss as to where I go to restore them. Can you help please? Aunty Says: If you are no longer able to view your photos then maybe the program associated with .jpg files

has been changed. The way to check this is to right click on one of the photos and choose ‘open with’ and ‘choose default program’. You will see a list of available programs or you can browse your computer for your favorite one. If you have actually lost your photos, i.e. you cannot see them listed when you look in the relevant pictures folder, then something has gone seriously wrong somewhere and we’ll need to investigate further.

Crackling noises

Jacky via email asks: HI AUNTY, I hope you can help me. When I was talking to my daughter via Skype last week she said that all she could hear was a crackling noise and not me talking. I could hear and see her and she could see me. I did a check on Skype and also my computer to see if it was working and it seems it is not. I have tried the microphone on my laptop and it works perfectly. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Skype and done a system restore on the computer but it is still the same, what can you advice please? The computer has windows XP. Aunty Says: The fact you can hear your daughter but you’re sounding bad at her end suggests a possible fault with the soundcard driver software or the sound device itself. If you had no result from restoring Windows to a previous time when everything was tickety-boo then I’m guessing it’s a hardware problem. Maybe double check for spyware and virus and try booting into ‘Safe Mode’ (F8 before Windows starts) and test the mic with the built in Sound Recorder (‘start’ ‘all programs’ ‘accessories’ ‘entertainment’). Let me know how you get on.

Trevor via email asks: I HAVE a Dell Dimension 9200 with Vista and for some reason when I put either a music CD, film DVD or Installation disc into either of the trays nothing loads automatically as it used to do. I have opened control panel and gone to Autoplay and checked that all the boxes are set to play or open folder and then I have pressed the Save button but nothing is working correctly, hope you can help? Aunty Says: You have done the most common tasks to get this working Trevor, so I fear it may be a registry problem. The only thing I can think of that you could try before we delve into the dark and dangerous depths of the Windows registry, is to check for any spyware and maybe uninstall/reinstall any CD/DVD writing software that may be interfering with the DVD drive. Does the same problem occur with a USB memory stick or flash card?

Account frozen

Shirley via email asks: DEAR AUNTY, my Hotmail account has been frozen and has been for the past ten days. It says on the screen that the wrong email/password has been put in too many times. I have tried everything that can possibly be done to rectify this situation without success. I found a telephone number for Hotmail on Google, but when I rang this number it was ‘not recognised’. Apart from the sheer frustration of this situation, it is imperative that I unlock my system. I have important files stored and also all my contacts. Is there any way that you can help me please?

Aunty Says: I know Hotmail have had server problems this last few weeks, so maybe it was because of this that your account has been locked. I notice you have another Hotmail email address so maybe keep sending them requests via this one. When you setup your original Hotmail address you would have been asked some security details which I am sure they will accept as proof you are the originator of your frozen email account. In the long term I would strongly recommend using another email provider such as Google’s Gmail or Yahoo mail as they are far more stable and secure.

That’s all for this week, email me on auntyvirus@roundtownnews.com and I will do my best to sort you out

GADGET INSPECTOR

Gadget Inspector investigates the case of: Sleepy Time Gadgets THIS WEEK the Inspector is dropping off into the land of nod with a couple of gadgets designed to help with the zees and avoid the “geez, is that what time it is?” Traditionally, sleeping aids came in a number of weird, sometimes fun, but often fruitless forms. “Take a drink of warm milk and whisky just before bedtime” used to be Granny Gadget´s advice – not really the best idea as I was only five at the time... or count sheep – who on earth thought of that little gem? Now with the wonders of 21st Century technology come more practical solutions. Our first dozy gadget is the €66 Dreamate Sleep Inducer. Looking like a wrist watch on steroids, the Dreamate is designed to help the over-stressed executive, homemaker or student (worrying about their loan probably…) to get a good night’s sleep. Western medical technology and ancient Chinese accupressure wisdom combines to retune your body clock and induce sleep. This is done by a high-tech sensor that uses special accupressure techniques to massage

an area of your left wrist, known in ancient Chinese medicine as the ‘Golden Triangle’. The Dreamate is put on half an hour before bedtime and you can expect positive results after only one week. Best results are achieved after eight weeks. It has an adjustable strap so finding a comfortable fit should be no problem. Yawn-mongous! Secondly we have the €25 Dreamhelmet Sleep Mask. Designed to be a combination sleep-mask and sound blocking pillow, the Dreamhelmet is targeted at long distance drivers and travelling executives. Handsewn and made from 100% cotton, comfort is guaranteed. The Dreamhelmet is multi-purpose and can be worn on the head, used as a pillow or even becomes a hand-muff. It is supplied with expanding foam ear-plugs and even sports hidden compartments where car-keys or a wallet can be hidden. Probably best to consider that one carefully, after all if you´re asleep and a thief sees you they could whip it off and be away before you can say

“Sassafrassarassum Rick Rastardly!” The Inspector´s Verdict: The Dreamate Sleep Inducer is definitely an interesting concept. Whether having your ‘Golden Triangle’ fiddled with for half an hour every night is really going to work is another matter. The Dreamhelmet Sleep Mask on the other hand, will be a boon to the

travelling executive or truck driver having to endure noisy truck-stops, hotels or airliners. Unfortunately you´ll end up looking like an S&M escapee or kidnap victim. Still, at what price sleep? Alternatively you can just switch on the television and watch just about any channel and be asleep in no time – saving the money in the process.

Am I just having another bad day? by

Anne-Marie Lamey

A Nursing Auxiliary at Prestige Nursing and Social Care Services with clinical experience in Mental Health Care

We have all heard the term ‘Depression’ and we have all used the phrase, “I´m depressed” to describe how we feel from time to time. Having ‘ups and downs’ in mood or feeling you’re having a bad day is normal and most of us recover quickly and return to being our normal happy selves. With depression, feelings of low mood and other symptoms continue for much longer. Many of us know when we are feeling low, but it can be more difficult to recognise when we are depressed. THE COMMON SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION CAN INCLUDE: Constant feelings of low mood, rather like there is a black cloud hanging over you Loss of enjoyment, even for the activities you normally love to do Feelings of guilt, feeling useless or worthless Lack of motivation, a feeling of “what’s the point?” Poor concentration Problems with sleep: you may find you’re sleeping too much or having interrupted sleep, like waking very early in the morning Feeling tired most of the time Loss of appetite or over eating (comfort eating) Feelings of anxiety Physical symptoms such as headaches, palpitations or chest pains If you feel you have experienced or are experiencing several of these symptoms for an extended period of time then you may be suffering from depression.

This is a treatable condition; the first step is coming to terms with how you are feeling. Some people feel there is a stigma attached to depression; we do not like to appear weak and may not want to admit to ourselves that we may need help, let alone anybody else. We all have times when we are overwhelmed and feel we can’t cope with things that are happening to us. Reaching out to family and friends and expressing your thoughts and feelings, although sometimes difficult, can be a valuable source of support. And it could give you a better picture of what you’re experiencing whilst giving those closest to you some insight of what you may be going through. With this knowledge they can help you on your path to recovery. Talking to Health Professionals such as your doctor is also good. Here at Prestige Nursing and Social Care Services we are very used to offering support and guidance, and explaining what options are open to patients. Anti-depressants are one of the most common medical treatments for depression and whilst this form of medication does not actually cure depression, with good management, a proper plan of treatment and good nursing and professional support it can often give the boost needed to explore the cause. The medication works on the chemical messengers in your brain to help lift your mood, which in turn eases your symptoms so you may feel more able to cope. While this is a common treatment method that a lot of people choose, it unfortunately does not work for everyone. And thus there are alternative remedies

such as herbal medication available. This is why it is important to discuss and plan all your options with an experienced health professional. Joining a support group can be helpful and a great source of practical advice and you can meet people who are going through similar experiences as yourself. There are numerous groups and organisations that offer help, support and advice but unfortunately not here in the Costa Blanca, unless you speak Spanish. However there is a wealth of information and support on the web, with good forums and don’t forget the highly experienced Samaritans. One of the main things to remember is positive thinking and asking for help. The Costa Blanca Samaritans is an excellent organisation Tel: 902 883 535-website www.costablancasamaritans.com. There is also a very informative forum site at www.depressionforums.org

HELP Vega Baja Friends Unlimited coach trip A COACH trip will leave from The Arches, Quesada, at 8.30pm Thursday 29th September for a long trip north of Valencia to La Vall D’uixó in the province of Castellón. It is hoped this long journey will be a memorable one, to include a visit to Saint Joseph’s Caves and a journey into the centre of the earth, gliding along the still waters of Europe’s longest accessible subterranean river. The coach will head north on motorways, stopping on the outskirts of Benidorm for a comfort break, expected to arrive at La Vall d’Uxio around midday before the group leaves the coach to head to the entrance to the caves. There will be time to visit the Hermitage or shops, before the tour of the caves. This is by boat and should take just over 40 minutes, before boarding the Tourist Train to be taken into the town for a tour of the Historic Centre. Here the group may alight and choose somewhere to eat, or stay on the train and return to the cave area. The train will return to town to collect passengers at 5.15pm before departing La Vall d’Uixo at 5:30pm for the return journey to Quesada, expected back around 9pm. There are two restaurants, two cafeterias and a large sheltered picnic area around the entrance to the caves. The cost for this all-day trip, coach, caves and tourist train is 20€ per person and tickets are available from the ‘HELP’ San Miguel office Mon-Fri 10am-130pm (93 372 3733).

Cupboards My Mother had a wonderful Clarisse Cliff dessert set. I loved the bold art deco colours and the cubist representation of the fruits painted all around. This wonderful set of pure History was never ever used. It belonged in a closed cupboard and was free to be admired but never to be used for the purpose that it was intended for. Needless to say that when my Mother passed over, the dessert set became mine, and it left the cupboard for ever to be used and to be admired at the same time. Good use saw a few chips here and there, and the total destruction of a sugar shaker which dredged many melons in its time, but which bit the dust one summer evening and ended up at the bottom of a plant pot! So many beautiful things are there to be savoured and adored. I have treasures that are maybe behind cupboard doors, but they are a part of me and they represent the past the present and all the memories and smiles along the way. I love to use the things that I love; that’s what they were made for; to care for, yes, but also to share. Paintings maybe on show in a gallery for the heritage of the Nation, and we choose to admire them, or not. Art is an appreciation, and some things we love, others we don’t, and some we maybe just do not understand. Whatever anything of beauty is a real treasure to us. One of my clients wears a very unusual necklace. It is made up from the first milk teeth of her children. Set in gold it represents her motherhood, the love her developed children have for her, and it’s quite a talking piece too. The teeth are beautifully set and mean so very much. I have often wondered what happened to my little pearlies when the tooth fairy left me a dollar under my pillow, just like magic. Whatever happened to the teeth? Spirit can be easily shut in a cupboard too. If somebody finds it scary or has any fear then that cupboard can and will be very

closely shut, and the spiritual energy never has to see the light of day. Some will use the spiritual gift, admiring it and sharing it, and preferring to use it to the very best of their abilities. Here there may well be the odd chip or even a breakage, but Spirit is healing and inspirational, and prefers that we have the benefit of experiences than merely waiting for things to happen; and then regretting that things didn’t go our way. It’s all up to choices when all is said and done. Spirit is an available resource and can work so well with your individual needs and aspirations. Or it can be placed tidily in the recesses of your mind in the cupboard marked, regret. Options form the basis of our beliefs and our norms. If Spirit are involved they will help to open doors and ensure us a way forward. They will not eliminate the spills and the thrills, and won’t take you out of your comfort zone either. Your choice will be your choice for as long as you need that. In the not so distant past many people were forced to hide their spirituality away. So much wasn’t talked about and many cupboards were full of secrets as people were afraid to express their spirituality and had to hide away their beliefs, their love and their admiration for the unseen miracles they subscribed to, but could not openly share. Thankfully now we live in enlightened times and our spiritual journey can be better illuminated. We can fall over along the way, yes, but we can and will pick ourselves up and continue this onward journey into the light of the dawning of a new age and a new consciousness. Light can only enter into darkness, the reverse process is impossible. Illumination shines a light and shows us the way, and whether we take that journey or not is up to us, and the dark recesses of the cupboard of our minds.

Evelyn.S. Hi Evelyn. I have met quite a few people in my time who have given wonderful readings with playing cards. I haven’t had any contact with anyone who can help you just now, but if anyone does know of someone they can contact me, and I will pass on the details. Each card has a specific value in the pack, and red/black cards their significance. Tarot and all methods of divination work when you have the respect for them, so it sounds as if you would be a natural! Let’s see if someone can help!

horoscopes by Kenny Corris Brave, fearless, Uranus is in cahoots with wily Aries as they both inconjunct with a passionate Mercury mid week. Sounds as if there is something you haven’t quite taken aboard. For sure you are the missing link in something, but through no fault of your own. Things right now are coming together, so kill two birds with one stone and know that all will be revealed very soon. It is a fiery Saturn that gentle makes a play for your talents and all that you hold dear this week. Rich in energy and basking in wisdom, you are asked to slow down, review and chill, because timing is of an essence right now, and you have to allow for a hidden agenda. Don’t go blaming anything or anyone, but any focus on your own great abilities will be inspiring, and will pay dividends. Though you won’t want to hear this there is no better time to look within yourself than with the supported actions of Pluto and Capricorn calling the shots. A new direction beckons and you might not get another chance quite as good as this to have things exactly the way you want them. You have waited and watched whilst other possibilities pass you by; make this the right time. Anger has its place when it comes to motivating you to take things further, but you seem content and happy to take what can only be second best. Truly value your skills and admit that you have travelled a long way on that journey of life that now doesn’t have to please anyone except yourself, and which represents all that you have worked so hard for. A new door opens whilst another slams shut. With Mars on the way to accompany you, and with a kudos achieved by the squaring with a Direct Mercury hovering over you, it seems as if there is something currently not said that you are holding on to deep in side. The key to handling emotion is to love yourself more so as to balance the powerful ego with the strong inner recesses of your inner mind, and the hopes and dreams will connect you. Mercury lands into your space and allows an important message to get through. You have been stalling for time, but it is someone else who benefits from your hesitation and that cannot be right, anyway. You have seen a loophole and you should go for it, any which way. It is important that things be out in the open whereby the clear light of day is your judgement and your future. Look to making headway with finances as you finally turn a corner, and enjoy an adjustment to your economic situation. Money works for you and you use your famous balance to resolve and restore even your fiscal obligations. Neptune sends powerful energy and a natural restoration to ensure that what you want is what you get right now, and that fortune is only to be asked for. The boxing gloves may be off, but the stored anger means that all is not over with your current complications. To be sure someone has rubbed salt into an old wound and this may be seen as a setback, or the base for appropriate actions on the very highest of levels. There is a journey you have to make which is being put off, but which now really has to be made sooner, rather than later. Jupiter crosses the Cosmos and brings a dramatic touch into play, just when you need guidance and the patience of a Saint. You are managing to keep it all inside you, but any help would be very acceptable right now when the chips are down. You may not have an alternative, but don’t make it so easy and fight to have reinstated something you hold dear and would be lost without. Pluto Directs towards the end of the week. It is vital that you carefully examine contracts; and anything that demands your signature should be placed on hold until after the weekend. Read the small print, and be careful with keys, money and your credit cards too. Pluto has a way of examining things from the roots upwards, so make sure that you have motive and reasoning to get you through. Chiron takes control, and releases you from something that you were secretly dreading. Inspiring and creative your life has to change so you can step up and achieve, not only to prove it to yourself, but to expand your directions, motivate your true destiny and be the real you. There comes a chance to say something that is on the tip of your tongue, but without confidence, forget it! A great week in which to get to clear a lot of the debris of your life and to make a fresh start. This does not mean that you are running away or having to re invent yourself in any way. It is however a great chance to show what you are made of, and to agree that you have been sleeping and now need to awake to a new song sung loudly within the depths of your soul, for all to hear!

If it’s your birthday this week... Slowly and carefully gets you back to base and back in shape this astrological year. There will be times when you are sorely tested, but the resolve is what is needed to kickstart future plans and put you in control of them!

Word Ladders The key rule is that you must only change one letter at a time as you move from one rung to another, and the word you make must be a proper word! Therefore you may move from BATH --> BATS but not from BATH --> CASH because that changes two letters in one go which is not allowed.

Cartagena announces Jazz Festival Preview Vibes From The Costas by

Tony Poole

from www.vibesfromthecostas. blogspot.com

R

OCKABILLY QUEEN Wanda Jackson opens the XXXI Cartagena Jazz Festival. Also performing will be the Japanese composer/musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, the Amercian jazz fusion guitarist Pat Metheny, and US folk band Fleet Foxes. The Department of Culture recently previewed who will be appearing in November. The full festival schedule will be announced later this month. Wanda Jackson is an American singer, songwriter, pianist and guitarist who had success in the mid-1950s and 60s as one of the first popular female rockabilly singers and a pioneering rock and roll artist. She is known to many as the Queen or First Lady of Rockabilly. Jackson mixed country music with fastmoving rockabilly. As rockabilly declined in popularity in the mid-60s, she moved to a successful career in mainstream country music with a string of hits between 1966 and 1973, including ‘Tears Will Be The Chaser For Your Wine’, ‘A Woman Lives For Love’ and ‘Fancy Satin Pillows’. She has enjoyed a resurgence of popularity among rockabilly revivalists in Europe, and was

inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an Early Influence in 2009. Ryuichi Sakamoto began his career in 1978 as a member of the pioneering electronic music band Yellow Magic Orchestra. They were an international success, with worldwide hits such as ‘Computer Game/Firecracker’ (1978) and ‘Behind The Mask’ (1978). As a solo artist he had success with the experimental electronic fusion album ‘The Thousand Knives Of Ryuichi Sakamoto’ (1978), and later released the pioneering electro-music album ‘B-2 Unit’ (1980), which included the electro classic ‘Riot In Lagos’. He began acting and film composing with ‘Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence’ (1983), which he starred in and composed the score for. The song ‘Forbidden Colours’, which he composed for the soundtrack, became a worldwide hit and he won a BAFTA Award. He later won an Academy Award and Grammy Award for scoring ‘The Last Emperor’ (1987), and has also won two Golden Globe Awards for his work as a film composer. In addition, he also composed music for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics opening ceremony.

Pat Metheny is one of the most successful and critically acclaimed jazz musicians to come to prominence since the 70s, and regarded as one of the top three jazz guitarist in the world (the other two being John Scofield and Bill Frisell). Certainly he is one of the most original guitarists to emerge from the 80s onward as a chance-taking player who has taken some wild left turns. His music at times can be difficult to

describe incorporating progressive elements of folk, jazz and mood music. Metheny has 3 gold albums and 17 Grammy Awards. Fleet Foxes came to prominence in 2008 with the release of their second EP, ‘Sun Giant’, and their debut full length album ‘Fleet Foxes’. Both albums received much critical praise, and reviewers noted their use of refined lyrics and vocal harmonies.

Rehearsals will take place at the Sala Municipal Life Resort, Monte de Santa Pola, Gran Alacant. The same training will be given to both choirs, who will then join together for the large performances which the group has become accustomed to giving. Further details on the choirs are available by calling 96 669 7570 (Gran Alacant) or 96 677 5976 (Punta Prima). All nationalities are welcomed in Melody Makers.

JJ Soulman IF YOU like soul, disco or Motown music, then you’ll love JJ Soulman. This talented vocalist, hailing from the midlands, has spent his professional musical career in soul bands as lead vocal or as a solo performer, so his knowledge is enviable. Guaranteed to get the dancers up on the floor, or if the audience prefer to ‘chair dance’ they’ll certainly know all the songs and be happy singing along. Some of the songs you will hear are: ‘Soul Man’, ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’, ‘Tracks of My Tears’, ‘Let’s Stay Together’, ‘I Feel Good’, and so many more…

Jimmy Mac

ONE THING you are guaranteed with Jimmy is Audience participation. This entertainer has a repertoire of music from the 50’s to modern day. Although his passion is rock n roll he will perform music to suit his audience. During his show he may include his tribute to Elvis Presley which is again a talent that although hidden, shows the versatility of the act. Along with his guitar playing the evening is dedicated to entertainment, enjoyment and a fun night for all.

This FREE entry marathon event is in memory of Jane’s dad Tony Rumsey: all monies raised throughout the day will be donated to Paul Cunningham Nurses. Russ said, “The Paul Cunningham Nurses were amazing and so helpful to Jane and I as well as caring for Tony. We both felt we wanted to do some-

Stacked Back Crass is Cash in the Rack I

F YOU caught up with this page three weeks ago I reflected on Pamela Anderson saying how she was just going to be nice to all other housemates on Celebrity Big Brother, and how I felt that not to be too smart a statement that might jump up and bite her whatsitsname - sadly I´ve been proved right and she is no longer part of the proceedings. I´m not here to say ‘I told you so’, it’s more to do with me wanting to seize the opportunity to highlight the dreadful world of reality television. Jedward, bless um, didn´t vote for her to go for reasons we can probably hazard a pretty accurate guess, but all the other housemates did, with the tight knit group of UK females driving that particular bus. Yet another less than smart move of Pammie´s was to put it about that she wanted to be called ´Buttercup´ (AAA cup fits better), and I get to thinking that this badly thought out decision was the un-doing of the girl. I said in the piece three weeks ago about what a giant sized yawn I find the whole thing and that view remains very much the same. What I am now looking forward to is the moment that it all comes to its wild razzmatazzie ending and we are then treated to watching the C list individual who is hailed the winner getting their 2 to 3 week shot at joining the A list before being stacked back in the rack at the third level.

There doesn´t seem to be any limit to the level of Crass we are subjected to in these modern times, and the mistress of this art is surely super boobed Katie Price (a.k.a. Jordan), or should that be the other way round. To explain what I mean I need to firstly tell you that Katie currently has

a Hair Products business running, a Talent Agency, (she definitely has a great deal of knowledge of what no talent is), a self penned book, yeh OK, and now we find out she´s about to start a magazine rather imaginatively called ´Katie´. Writing on Twitter Katie said “can’t wait to launch my new mag, … it’s called ´Katie´… it’s my latest adventure! … riveting, simply riveting, then adding, “Press launch 7th September … got tiny outfit for the launch “ and so enters the Crass. This for sure is bordering on out and out prostitution and Katie´s post not surprisingly generated quite a few rather strong worded responses, to which superjugs replied with yet more glorious rhetoric, “Wow! people acting very jealous and nasty today, but I feel they are fans to even make a comment and follow me “ We all know what you are trying to say Katie so don’t you go fretting none, it’s the best that peanut brain of yours was able to retain of such a jumble of words. … its called ´Katie ´… priceless … absolutely priceless.

Not for the faint of heart In 1992 there were a couple of females on TV who were frequently drunk, always sex mad, smoked heavily, indulged in other … substances, and while you are trying to work out who I am going on about, the good news is that they are returning to the small screen in the late autumn. PR Guru Edina (Jennifer Saunders) and Fashion Guru and champagne for breakfast Patsy (Joanna Lumley) staggered about our screens in the most undignified manner telling us how Absolutely Fabulous life can be. Yes, my sweet sugar dumplings, ‘Ab Fab’ will be back before Xmas, only for three episodes sadly, so check out your TV guide for the listing, crack open the bubbly and watch Edina and Patsy at their disgusting best.

Timeline

ALL READERS of classic adventure are familiar with Michael Crichton, a prolific writer who mixes contemporary adventure with Book Review by science fiction and has brought us blockbusters such as Jurassic Park, Congo, The Lost World, and The Andromeda Strain. Now Crichton mixes a dash copy@dannyjpcollins.com of HG Well’s Time Machine with mediaeval history and takes a team of archaeologists searching for a lost professor back to France of the early 14th Century where they will battle with evil knights as English and French forces fight for domination of Castelgard, the French monastery that the archaeologists are excavating in the 21st Century. Mysteries are solved, especially that of a man found wandering dazed in the Arizona desert, holding a small white cube and speaking words that make no sense, and of a secretive multinational corporation that has developed an astounding technology to transfer matter through space and time. It’s all sheer escapism but Crichton’s novels have the

Danny Collins

advantage of being exhaustingly researched and are all the more believable to the reader. As with many of Crichton’s novels, Timeline has now been made into a film. A great airport read. Author: Michael Crichton Publisher: Ballantine Books (paperback) Price: 12.80€ ISBN: 0 345 41762 3

Climbing and crawling in the Cova del Migdia THE HISTORIC site La Cova del Migdia on the Montgo is accessed by climbing a steep path, scaling an almost vertical 10 metre rock face and crawling through a narrow tunnel. Not surprising, then, that the site remained undisturbed for 4,000 years! Under the direction of the Cirne Foundation the archaeological secrets of the ravine site are now emerging, including cave paintings, ancient ceramics and sacred tombs.

Neil was a really good mate. We used to meet regularly, twice a week almost every week in the early hours of the morning. It’s not that we played golf, went out on bikes or even supported the same football team; we just used to meet up at the vegetable markets in London. Neil supplied our restaurant grocery needs along with many other local restaurants and hotels, but as I was usually visiting the fish markets it seemed a good idea to check vegetable prices and availability whilst I was there. Neil didn’t seem to mind in fact I often used to pick up the odd item on his behalf to save him the trip and deliver it to his place on the way back to the restaurant. Neil would deliver non veggie items to us when we were unable for one reason or another to get to the market ourselves although he did draw the line at haggling at the fish market on our behalf. We used to joke about whose name would secure the best prices and whatever the other had just bought back it was of course always overpriced. One morning when I was in Neil’s office having just returned from the market a very irate head chef from a well known local restaurant rang screaming down the phone demanding to know

where his *******apples were, which were “On the answer phone, but not on the delivery.” Neil tried his best to calm the chef down, apologising for the error, promising to deliver the missing items as soon as possible and asking just how urgent were they? The reply came: “I need them urgently, for this lunchtime service”. I can only assume that the phone was then slammed down, by the startled look on Neil’s face. Then Neil re-played last night’s answer phone message from the chef for my benefit, and the order, although a little slurred, made no mention of apples. Now, said Neil, I have two choices, I can either ring him back, play him the tape, demand an apology and suggest that if he wants apples that bad he should get in his car and go and get them himself; or I can get another driver, and another van, drive twenty miles, with two apples, together with an apology just to keep him sweet and to keep his business. Which course of action do you think he took? Do your homework, know your prices, if you do decide to go to the market be a regular visitor and beware of gloating over a single bargain

in the market whilst being overcharged on everything else. Getting a reputation is easier than you think but earning one is much harder and usually takes a lot, lot longer. Be fair to those who serve you and to those to whom you serve. Ask your suppliers what is possible and build up your credit and who knows when the time comes for a little extra service they might just deliver.

Author of Motoring in Spain

DEAR BRIAN, I am coming up to 70 and have a Spanish licence. Does it expire when I reach 70 or what should I do? Ron (NRN), Alicante.

keep them going - worth remembering, readers! A full description of all the classifications is in my book. Regards, Brian.

Dear Ron. There is an old saying that there are no silly questions - only silly answers. I will avoid the latter. I think you are confusing the Spanish system with the system in the UK where all normal (non-commercial) driving licences expire at age 70. In Spain they only expire when you fail a medical up to the age of 95 years. So look at your licence and see the classification dates for when each classification expires. For example, I have the classifications A1, A2, A, B, BE, C1, C1E, and BTP, so there is a mix of standard (car, motorcycle, etc.) and commercial. At age 72, I passed the usual (now very expensive) medical and need to take the next one as it says on my permiso in May 2014 for all of them. To be fair I do not use the bigger classifications now but one day I may need to rent one for a small job, so it is useful to

Dear Brian, I am the president of Age Concern Costa Calida which has been operational for almost a year now. We offer advice and information about a number of issues but I have just had one I can’t find the answer to and wondered if you could help. An English couple have been here on holiday from their home in Hungary. They know their Hungarian registered car is only legal here for six months. Unfortunately the lady has been taken ill and will be unable to travel back to their home in Hungary for a number of months and her husband is worried about his car becoming illegal. He asked me how they go about extending the six months to keep them legal until they can return home. Any advice, information, or guidance would be most appreciated. Kind regards, Ann - Age Concern.

49

Dear Ann, I know of Age Concern and you all do a very good job. This is a new one but simple to fix. As you know (and all expats should know) all foreign vehicles used on the public roads in Spain must be fully legal as they would be in the country of registration (this is common throughout the EU), so that is important. For such a medical, I suggest that the couple obtain a letter in Spanish from the lady’s doctor briefly explaining why she has been unable to return to Hungary sooner and carry it in the car. In the unlikely event of them being stopped, produce the letter. The police are reasonable in such matters and I would suggest that taking this action will cause any officer to be satisfied in the very unlikely event of them being stopped. Travelling through the other countries back to Hungary will not be a problem because they will not be resident in those countries (as long as documentation is legal). That action will set their minds at rest. (If only all were as concerned about being legal…)

“I will not stop until Ferrari’s World Champion,” says Alonso TWICE WORLD Champion Fernando Alonso has vowed to put Ferrari on the top spot by 2016. And if he fails, he said, he will keep going until 2021. On a more realistic note Alonso recognises that with a handicap of 89 points he has no championship options and is facing the season “race by race” and trying not to think about the imminent championship. He also commented that in order to win this season’s championship, the German driver Sebastian Vettel would have to experience an extraordinary run of bad luck. Of team mate Felipe Massa Alonso said, “One of the best companions I’ve had. We need luck - we work well together, although we have different styles of driving - I am aggressive in the corners and he does it more smoothly.”

300 cars stolen every day in Spain

DETECTOR’, A company that specialises in the location and recovery of stolen vehicles, has produced a report that reveals 300 vehicles are stolen every day in Spain, equating to between 100,000 and 120,000 per year. Most targeted areas are larger cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Malaga. Drivers are urged to take the precaution of insuring their vehicles with reputable insurance companies that are properly registered.

The final whistle With Andy Kay

RTN Golf Club update

www.andykayevents.com

British Performance

Dennis Jordan NORTH REGION

Mike Probert COSTA BLANCA REGION

RTN’s ANDY Kay reports from South Korea after spending 2 weeks in Daegu as the Stadium Announcer at the IAAF World Championships. With Mo Farah clinching gold in the 5000m and Phillips Idowu taking silver in the triple jump, Britain ended up with 7 medals from the World Championships, matching the prediction by head coach Charles van Commenee. On the face of it then, with the London Olympic Games fast approaching, it all looks to be going to plan for UK Athletics. However, underneath the surface of a 6th place finish in the medal table, Britain’s head coach might just have a few concerns. He’ll know that while most of the country’s big name athletes delivered, a number of others didn’t live up to their billing. The facts are that Britain didn’t have a male finalist in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m or 1500m while the likes of Jenny Meadows and Lisa Dobriskey, both tipped to do well, also failed to make the finals in their events. Indeed, outside of the medallists, the only UK athlete who looked like getting on the podium was Tiffany Porter until she made a mess of the final two flights in the 100m hurdles. Van Commenee, though, is no mug and he knows he has 11 months to prime his stars for London and he’s already said, he’ll use every moment of the time available. He’s predicting a total of 8 medals next summer and at this stage, with probably a couple of reservations, the Dutchman looks to pretty much bang on. CHANNEL 4 Having been in Daegu, I haven’t seen much of the UK television coverage provided by Channel 4 although I’m more than aware of the to-do following the none-too-successful presentation debut by Ortis Deley. While Deley’s inability to handle a live sporting event has dominated the TV headlines, the other members of the Channel 4 team certainly put in the hard yards, covering every event, including the 20k and 50k walks. Channel 4 has the rights to the 2013 World Championships in Moscow and they have the beginnings of a decent team. John Rawling is a top commentator; Kath Merry, Iwan Thomas and Dean Macey are incredibly enthusiastic pundits while Sonja McLaughlan gets some very good responses from the athletes down at trackside. Yes, the channel made some mistakes but they’ll hopefully only get better, starting with their coverage of the Paralympics next summer. At the very least, I imagine they’ll appoint a seasoned presenter. TIPS FROM KOREA Finally, an important top tip for anyone travelling out to this part of the world any time soon: After spending a relatively dry two weeks, prepping and working hard, it’s not a great idea on the final night to mix Korean vodka with Jamaican rum. Oh my aching head!

WOW HAS the weather at the start of September not been different from the long hot months of July and August? Last week there were a number of rain checks issued due to the heavy downpours of rain across the region. The hollow tining period now starts in earnest and the next few weeks sees work commence at Campoamor, El Valle, La Serena, Mar Menor, Roda and La Marquesa to name a few. There are still a few late summer deals available BUT many of these end mid month so get your booking in early to avoid disappointment but note that my office is closed from 12/09/11 to 19/09/11 for holidays. The 4 player and 2 buggy deals at Las Ramblas (€155) and at La Finca (€164) last through most of the month of September as do the various selection of deals at Vistabella. THIS WEEK I bring you a short and sweet report of the current green fee offers in the Torrevieja area. Time constraints will allow me to do no more this week as I am very busy with exciting new developments in the world of the Hound and MurciaGolf.co – All will be revealed in the coming weeks! Villamartin and La Finca are both coming into their last full week of low season so it is your last chance to play these courses at their lowest rates before the high season gets into full flow. Also a quick mention for the La Piazza Restaurant located in the centrocommercial,La Fuenteat Campoamor which provides a great menu deldia at €10 for a pre/post round meal – enjoy! If you are looking to take advantage of the cooler weather and play some good value golf then get in touch with the Hound to take advantage of these last summer offers while you can!

What’s happened to our game? Noel’s world of golf By Noel Eastwell Teaching Professional Campo de Golf El Plantio 639 730 891

GOLF IS a game where we used to have some of the highest respect for our surroundings and the people we compete with. Sadly over recent months I have seen etiquette plunge to lower levels than I thought possible. On Sunday last week, I came across someone playing a championship golf course in flip-flops! Not only is this dangerous to the player but it shows a complete lack of respect to the other golfers using the course who take the time to dress properly. Flip flops have no place on the greens of golf courses. Most people I see wearing them drag their feet - that would be a really useful thing to do on soft wet greens that need a huge amount of love and care during summer!. After this I thought I had seen most things. Then on Tuesday I came across a man who every time he hit the ball, which was an awful lot of times I assure you, he shouted as do some of the current crop of tennis players. I lost count of the number of times people on adjoining holes thought there was a lunatic on the loose, or maybe there was for all I know... This behaviour again has no place in golf - the man even shouted when he putted! How on earth his playing partners put up with his behaviour I will never know. Sadly this continuing downward trend in etiquette follows the failure to repair pitchmarks at all let alone properly and the never-ending saga of the disappearing rakes. The rakes always seem to disappear when a golfer plays a bad shot and either leaves the ball in the bunker or airmails it over the green. We have all seen

this bad behaviour and no doubt some of us have tackled the offenders and got grief in return. I urge all golfers to play the game for enjoyment and to leave the golf courses they play in such condition, as they would like to find it in if at all possible. For the sake of the game please encourage your fellow golfers to do the same. WIN A ROUND OF GOLF FOR 2 INCLUDING BUGGY AT THE BEAUTIFUL EL PLANTIO RESORT IN ALICANTE To enter this competition, simply answer the question below correctly. Every correct answer will be entered into a draw at the end of the month and the winner of this fantastic prize worth over 180€ will be picked at random at the end of each month. Send your entries by email to golf@roundtownnews.com. The decision of the editor of RTN will be final in making the winning selection. QUESTION FOR 9TH SEPTEMBER 2011 In what year did Nick Faldo first win The Open Championship? A. 1987 B. 1988 C. 1990 All answers must be received no later than 5pm on 30th September 2011 to be entered into September’s draw, to be made on 30th September. The winner will be announced in RTN on 7th October 2011.

Catering will be ordered against the members that have notified Sue. Subscriptions are also due from 1st August and to be paid prior to commencement of the AGM. Subs to be paid to Derek Swann and they are 25€. The picture is of the Rio Segura at Murcia now it has had a haircut! ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS supplied By Terry Screen We were once again up at the Embalsa de Argos for the 10th and penultimate round of the Summer Series on 30th August: we are noticing a difference as autumn looms now, as daylight does not arrive until almost 7am. The temperature when we left home was 24º and had dropped down 6º on arrival at the water. It was still a hot day with very little breeze and by the look of it there had been a thunderstorm overnight, as all the ground was heavily pock marked from heavy rain which in turn had affected the fishing as the weights on average were poor compared with recent visits. Ian Dalzell is not only a great angler but also has the luck of the Irish, once again drawing his favourite peg and as always making the most of it. 1st Ian (The Irish Wizard) Dalzell with 29.480kg fishing feeder and pellet 2nd Lenny (The Cultural Attache) Bolton with 23.800kg fishing pole and paste 3rd Doug (The Welsh Goldminer) Hornblower with 16.420kg fishing pole and feeder on pellet and paste Sorry Doug, but the three judges only gave you 9-6 each for the full pike with twist as your entry made too much of a splash! But you did manage to recover your pole which was pulled in by a Carp. Three of the five collie-like

puppies that have been wandering around the lake for nearly 3 months are growing up and looking quite healthy, thanks to the kindness of the anglers who have been supplying them with food, especially Bob Rafferty who fed them tins of dog food and dog biscuits while we were there. Over the past 12 months I have had dealings with Billy Clarke Angling Supplies based in the UK and he has advised me that for anyone requiring spare pole or rod parts, they can supply and dispatch to Spain for approx. £23 pounds postage and packing and delivery within 7days. You can contact them on their web site www.fishingtacklespares.com and order either on line or by telephone. All other details are available on our website www. abbeyangling.com or from the Match Secretary Terry Screen on 96 532 8368. Anglers Together WE HAVE been having a lot of enquiries about licenses from anglers who are passing the ‘magic age of 65’ and therefore pensioners! Licenses are still required and are free providing you have a Spanish Pensionista card - otherwise you will have to pay the normal fees. Licenses are available from either Town Halls or the Caja Rural Bank if in Valencia region. In Murcia you will also require insurance. Make sure you take photocopies of all relevant documents to obtain your license, i.e. passport photopage, NIE and insurance. Anglers Together was formed to introduce and encourage anglers of all abilities to meet up and get together to fish, either sea or freshwater. Firm friendships have been formed during the time the group has been active and information on fishing venues and licenses required are available at the meetings or by regular emailed newsletters. Meetings are held in two locations each month. Anyone with an interest in fishing (sea or freshwater) is welcome to come along to a meeting to see what we’re about. THE NEXT MEETINGS ARE: Friday 9th September at 12pm, Mary’s Bar, Campoverde (near Pilar de la Horadada): Saturday, 10th September at 12pm at The New Royal Bar and Restaurant at El Alamillo opposite the sea-front between Isla Plana and Puerto de Mazarron: There will be some second-hand tackle and magazines available.
