Let Us Remember Them
The Standards are lowered during the two minutes silence
MORE THAN 200 people packed into and outside of La Siesta Church in Torrevieja last Friday for the annual Armistice Day ceremony. The moving and solemn ceremony started just before 11am and included a two minute silence. Read the full story on page 9.
Expats right to vote by Louise Clarke REMEMBER THE name James Preston, because it is highly likely that this man’s ‘David and Goliath’ fight against the British government, will change history. James Preston believes that as a British Citizen, he should have the right to vote regardless of how many years he has been living abroad and regardless of where in the World he is living. Mr Preston’s ex-pat voting rights case against the British government was heard in the High Court in London last week and he is currently awaiting the final judgement. Described as a brave man, James Preston has de-
cided to take on the full might of the British government by applying for a judicial review of the expatriate voting rights law. James is a married fund manager from Leicestershire, who works for a property investment firm based in Madrid. DEMOCRATIC Despite never having voted before in his life, he is incensed that he can’t vote in UK elections because he has lived out of the country for too long. He says: “I know this might sound odd, but until I got married and had children, I really never felt the need to vote. It was my strong feelings about the Iraq war that persuaded me to think about voting in the forthcoming UK elections but now that I’ve reached the 15-year watershed of living in Spain, I’ve lost the chance. I’m basically being
stripped of a fundamental democratic right; the right to vote.” Regardless of the decision, one thing is for certain and that is that this case has far and wide reaching consequences for every British expat in every part of the world. And this issue is something that Conservatives Abroad has been fighting for. Chairman of the Javea branch of Conservatives Abroad, Margaret Hales, told RTN: “What a courageous man James Preston is for taking his case to the High Court in London. Every British citizen living abroad should be cheering for him! We at Conservatives Abroad here in Spain are extremely grateful to both him and his pro bono lawyers and hope that this case will push the British Government further into changing the legislation and letting us vote.” An online voting poll has been launched in support of James’ case and you can read more and vote your support at www.votes-for-expat-brits.com
The real deal with Moneycorp and RTN Network by Jack Troughton EX-PATS SEE more of their cash by using market leader Moneycorp to move funds to Spain – and qualify for a free ADSL package. The specialist foreign exchange and money services provider, Moneycorp has teamed up with communications expert RTN Network to offer a unique ‘combo deal’ that saves clients 19.99€ a month. To qualify, clients must move a minimum of £1,000 every month via a Moneycorp Regular Payment Plan and have a 3MB ADSL package with RTN Network – normally costing 44.95€ for the bundle but 19.99€ will be credited back on bills. And there is no time limit on the offer so people moving private funds will enjoy making savings month after month – almost 240€ every year. Moneycorp’s Kevin Wright said as with special offers for repatriating money to the UK, the company was also striving to give added value to customers bringing money to Spain. “It makes sense to use RTN Network because we already have first class links with RTN itself. The paper has investigated us and fully recommends us to its readers,” he said.
SERVICE “We are working with three of the bigger and well known telecoms companies who we feel also have the same attitude towards clients as we do at Moneycorp – one of those is RTN Network because of the quality of its customer friendly service. Kevin added: “Times are very tough and it is a matter of seeing what established companies here in Spain can do to help their clients. “Obviously you can give people a voucher or one off discount but we are trying to give on-going value – month in month out.” Trusted in foreign exchange since 1979, Moneycorp traded more than £10.5 billion in currencies last year and is fully regulated and authorised by the Financial Services Authority. He said the minimum £1,000 monthly transfer to qualify for free ADSL could also be achieved by two partners combining funds and sending as one. “But people should be looking to use a Moneycorp Regular Payment Plan anyway because they will still be saving money,” he added. BANK “If a client is moving money from a UK bank to a Spanish bank it is certainly worth looking at
Moneycorp to see if we can offer a better deal.” Kevin said it was important to point out that state pensions sent direct from Newcastle to Spain were already the best deal available. “Newcastle sends it over without charge, at the best rate and it is a fairly efficient service.” But he underlined how a Moneycorp pension payment plan was the most competitive method of bringing monthly payments from a private pension to Spain. “It is very easy to set up and once it is opened, everything is done by telephone. It is also fully automated. Basically, we have a direct debit from the client’s bank account, we do the conversion, and it lands in their Spanish account on the day they request the money arrive,” Kevin explained. “Payment plans are fully flexible and clients are not locked into a fixed term contract – once set up, the client will not have to do anything unless they want to change the amounts being transferred.” And he said there was “no catch” to offer through the special relationship between Moneycorp and RTN Network. “The client keeps making a monthly payment of £1,000 or more and almost 19.99€ will continue to be credited to their RTN Network account.”

Rajoy triggers market jitters by Jack Troughton MARIANO RAJOY, the man most likely to lead Spain after Sunday’s elections, sparked “aggressive selling” of government bonds by failing to commit to tackling the debt crisis. With the Eurozone close to ‘the abyss’, the Partido Popular leader’s stance was enough to scare the market into action and further dent Spain’s already tattered image. The last two weeks have been “absolutely disastrous” for the 17 members of the single currency and without swift action the euro could implode, warn market experts. And for the first time, worried expats and people moving cash into the Euro are beginning to question the future of the troubled currency. Germany and France have called for stricter austerity measures to combat the debt crisis – and while the UK and United States have policies designed to tighten belts, they have also used quantitative easing to try and stimulate their economies. JUDGE David Kerns, a market analyst and dealing manager with foreign exchange experts Moneycorp, said the sovereign debt crisis in the Eurozone was driven by the bond market and said Mr Rajoy had been judged on his off-the-cuff remark. “Rajoy was seen as being extremely flippant by saying ‘I am not committed to anything’. The market saw that as he was not committed to tackling the debt crisis in Spain,” he said. “And that meant that Spanish bonds were sold aggressively.” He added: “Over the last couple of weeks it has been absolutely disastrous for the Eurozone and ultimate disaster has crept ever closer.” At the summit of Eurozone leaders, Germany’s Angela Merkel and French leader Nickolas Sarkozy said they were both determined Greece should remain in the single currency – but also agreed she could leave. HARD David said leaders in Greece and Italy had stood aside and ‘technocrats’ were “parachuted in” to lead hard-hitting austerity measures. But he warned austerity measures could have a negative impact. “If you cut public spending and turf public sector workers onto the dole queues, there is less spending capability in the economy and it is a downward spiral.” He said in the short term nations had to restore the credibility of their bonds but countries like Greece, Spain and Italy had also seen their
credit ratings downgraded making it more expensive to raise cash. “It is a contagion. At first it was Greece, Ireland and Portugal, then Italy and now Spain is being dragged into it,” said David. “The new Spanish prime minister is likely to be asked is Spain going to be able to tackle its debt problems quickly. “Everything must be tackled quickly. France, Austria, Holland and Finland are coming under pressure – the contagion is spreading quickly and it is a very precarious position. IMPLODE “It is not in anyone’s interest for the Eurozone to implode but we are getting very close to that being the case. It is getting very close to disaster.” David believes the countries of the single currency must be greater fiscal integration and allow the European Central Bank unlimited funds to buy the bonds of the “stricken nations”. Germany believed such a move was a “moral hazard” and wanted taxes raised and more austerity to manage the crisis – but a single European bond would allow all members to raise capital on equally terms. “But you need fiscal integration amongst the 17 members and an absolute loss of national identity with all budgets being managed by the central bank. Would that be acceptable to the Eurozone nations?” said David. “It is an obvious solution but I cannot imagine that happening very swiftly even if it was adopted.”

GROWTH He said at present Greece faced 30 years of minimal growth because of the crisis – outside the Euro its own currency would devalue and its products become more attractive, starting growth again. However, a powerhouse country like Germany returning to the D-mark would see the value of the currency soar and the cost of exports “zoom” – so wanted to remain in a single currency. “Germany has had it too good for too long, they have products to sell but they are cheaper through the adoption of the single currency. It has been the main benefactor; the south Mediterranean nations have had to live off debt.” David said calls had been flooding into Moneycorp from people wanting to know what was happening. “We have never had this before. Clearly the psyche is that there is an outside chance the Euro could be no more but it is an outside chance.”

out – Poppies on parade Watch thieves about! POPPIES WERE the ‘must wear’ item on Sunday as people across the Costa Blanca remembered Britain’s fallen heroes. by Jack Troughton Services of Remembrance were held across the region as expats paid tribute to the brave servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The Royal British Legion predicts this year’s Poppy Appeal –which raises money to support ex-servicemen and women and their families - will be one of the most fruitful ever – not only is it the 90th anniversary of the annual fund raiser, but the Armed Forces are engaged in the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan. Many expats will have taken time to watch the Remembrance Sunday parade and solemn service at The Cenotaph in London’s Whitehall as the Queen led the tributes, followed by Princes Philip, Charles and William and Princess Anne, other members of the Royal Family and party political leaders. More than 7,500 veterans marched past the poppy-laden memorial to the clapping and cheers of an enthusiastic crowd. SILENCE Earlier, the Queen was joined by members of the Royal Family – including for the first time the Duchess of Cambridge– for the two-minute silence, signalled by cannon fire of the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery in horse Guards Parade. The Queen stood with her head bowed as Big Ben chimed eleven – marking the Armistice of the Great War in 1918, which ended on the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Lieutenant General Sir John Kiszely, the
(from left) Roger Dawes, Jack Grindy, Chris Clearly, Hugh Norton, Peter Yates, Brian Weskett and Bob Hunt MBE
Royal British Legion’s National President, said: “Remembrance Sunday is a time for the nation to unite in its reverence for the British armed Forces past and present. “When we bow our heads in reflection, we remember those who fought for our freedom during the two World Wars, but we also mourn and honour those who have lost their lives in more recent conflicts. “Today, with troops on duty in Afghanistan and other trouble spots around the world, remembrance, and the two minute silence, are as important as ever.” WORLD And expats in Spain joined with British citizens and Commonwealth cousins
around the world to mark the occasion. The Javea Branch of the Royal British Legion traditionally holds its memorial in afternoon and the Fisherman’s Church for the Remembrance Sunday service was taken by Father Robin Carter. The choir of the Laude Lady Elizabeth School sang during an emotional service also attended by members of the Royal Air Force Association, The Aircrew Association and the Royal Naval Association. Branch chairman Roger Dawes said the church in Javea Port was once again a full house and so full it was “standing room only”. He added: “They are already saying at the Legion headquarters that more poppies than ever have been sold this year.”
by Jack Troughton MEAN VULTURES are stealing copies of the Costa Blanca’s favourite free English newspaper by the bundle-load – robbing loyal readers of their weekly RTN treat. Every Friday thousands of copies are left with a network of key distributors along the coast but recently there have been reports back to the paper’s newsroom in La Nucia that whole deliveries are vanishing. Thieves have been spotted driving up in a car, opening the boot and throwing in the loot – hundreds of copies of the paper – before speeding off. And while it shows that a quality newspaper is very much in demand, RTN wants every member of the public to have an equal chance of picking up a copy. APPEAL Geoff Gartland, managing director of RTN, appealed to people at distribution points to keep a sharp eye out for the bad guys, and if possible to keep the newspaper inside their premises. “It is some sort of back-handed compliment that thieves feel the need to steal bundles of RTN as soon as it hits the streets,” he said. “But we want the newspaper to be read by as many people as possible. “As our title proudly states, this is ‘Your English Newspaper’ and so I am appealing for our distributors and our readers to keep a sharp eye out for the RTN robbers – once we have collected enough evidence, we will take action.” And Geoff apologised to readers left without a copy because of the spoilsports and vowed normal service would be resumed as soon as possible. On the buses
One of the damaged vehicles
by Jan Gamm Six buses operating the new school transport contracts are sabotaged in Torrevieja. The buses were part of the new school run concession to transport kids living more than three kilometres away from school. The vehicles were parked overnight on Friday in the La Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas: they were discovered on Saturday morning with slashed tyres and several engine parts destroyed, effectively putting the buses out of service. According to the mechanic making an initial inspection of the buses, repairs to return the vehicles to an operable condi-
Train smashes into sheep IN A bizarre rail accident a high-speed train travelling from Santander to Alicante on Tuesday smashed into a flock of 15 to 20 sheep assembled on the rails between Villena and Sax near Alicante at 2.45pm. The driver of the Alvia S-130 was unable to stop in time to avoid hitting the animals. No one was hurt in the incident (apart from the sheep) and the train halted at the scene for around an hour and a half before continuing its journey. Renfe assured the press that no other trains were involved and that no derailment occurred.
Banderas mourns loss of film subsidies in Spain
Banderas pictured in Mexico with Salma Hayek
SPANISH SCREEN icon Antonio Banderas has commented at a promotion event in Mexico that he expects a “change of government” in Spain to result in the PP coming to power. Despite admitting his 22 years of living outside Spain limited his experience the 51-year-old Malaga-born actor said he followed his homeland politics with interest and regretted the inevitable cuts that will put an end to film subsidies in Spain – not that he ever had need of them, he added, as his acting career was “managed largely from Hollywood.” Banderas is in Mexico to present the animated film ‘Puss in Boots’ featuring his ‘voice-over’ talents.
tion could cost up to 13,000€. It was also observed that the buses’ mechanical parts were tampered with by someone with particular experience of these types of engines. The Guardia Civil has launched an investigation to using images captured by security cameras in some businesses located in the Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas. The new concession, run by ‘La Inmaculada’ on municipal funding, began providing the service on Thursday, taking over the service from Costa Azul and retaining the services of some 80 drivers. However, the change in management led to at least 20 drivers being laid off.

Still fresh after ninety years by Jan Gamm THE FIRST stallholders to open shop in the Central Market on Avenida Alfonso el Sabio in Alicante are long gone but their children and grandchildren continue to trade as the market hits its 90th Anniversary on 23rd November. The building remains almost unchanged in essentials but almost a century of trade has changed the face of the market with distribution practices and retail approached in an entirely different way, utilising the internet and online sales to boost business. WIFI Girones, a fruit stall run by the fourth generation of the family sells “…tropical products such as mango, papaya, cassava, and we have a website and online store that we operate from home until the market installs wifi,” - Ana Giró
said her grandfather was one of the first Central Market traders and the business has been passed from generation to generation. The introduction of wireless internet in municipal markets and the creation of a website is one of next year’s priority projects with the goal of “possible e-commerce and a virtual store in the near future,” according to Merchants Association Municipal Market Dealers Manager Fernando Viana. Other innovations include the use of green bags and an enhanced doorstep service in conjunction with the company Seur to arrange transportation goods purchased to make them more easily accessible and also cheaper. BOMBED There are still signs of the Central Market’s past, with its clock still showing the time at which it was bombed in 1938, resulting in the
A grisly catch A FISHING boat named ‘Magoo’ based in Santa Pola hauled in a grisly catch on Tuesday afternoon when it netted the body of a North African man of around 30, about 20 nautical miles off the coast of Murcia. Initial investigations suggest that body might have been in the water not more than four or five days and could be of Algerian origin. The crew of the Magoo discovered the body when the daily catch was drawn at around 4.30pm. The body has been transferred to the Forensic Anatomical Institute in Alicante for autopsy to clarify the cause of death. It is thought the man may have fallen or been thrown from a boat that tried to illegally access the coast of Murcia in the previous few days.

Street protest
by Jack Troughton A STREET artist keeps the spirit of the 15-M movement alive as Spain’s general election approaches with the protest group’s call for real democracy. RTN readers will remember the peaceful occupation of Madrid’s Puerta del Sol before the May local elections – and the demonstrations across the country and even abroad. 15-M wants radical political change, an end to corruption in public office, and alternatives to the job losses and cuts brought on by measures designed to tackle the sovereign debt crisis. And in the ‘graffiti versus art’ debate, the unnamed artist has chosen to create the ‘freedom’ picture in environmentally-friendly wax crayon – rather than the difficult-to-remove spray paint tags that frequently deface property.
Mayor inaugurates new park
The Mayor tries his hand at petanca
by Louise Clarke WHILST ORIHUELA Costa continues to exist without a single green space for residents to enjoy and the likelihood of one being built as remote as Stockport County winning the Champions League due to lack municipal funds, over the border in Torrevieja, the Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, officially inaugurated yet another public park for the residents of Torrevieja - this time in the Lago Jardin II urbanisation. Accompanied by the delegate of Parks and Gardens, Carmen Gomez; Councillor for Security, Public Highways and Traffic, Eduardo Gil Rebollo and Councillor for Foreign Residents, Rosario Martinez, the Mayor visited the new 3,000 square metre park that has been created in Lago Jardin II. BEAUTIFUL The new green and recreational area which has
been created for the enjoyment of the local residents and which was funded with municipal investment has four Petanca courts, a children’s playground including keep fit and resistance machines, eight benches, a toilet which has also been fully adapted for disabled use and a perimeter fence that surrounds the park. The Mayor expressed his satisfaction with the excellent work, completed by the Department of Parks and Gardens on an area that had become totally degraded and a dumping ground into what he called “…a beautiful park.” The area in which the park is now located was taken over by the Town Hall nine months ago and the new park project was started almost immediately. The Lago Jardin II park is located next to a large green area has a municipal investment of €50,000. During the inauguration, the Mayor told RTN that next year the plan is to continue creating new green areas and recreational facilities, especially in this area, south of Torrevieja.
21 18 -- 27 24 OCT NOV2011 2011 Continued from front page Led by La Siesta Chaplain Rev Chris Scargill, the service paid tribute to the fallen from past and present wars, remembered with esteem, honour and praise. As the warm November sun shone down on the church, former military personnel, their wives and husbands paid tribute to the war dead alongside Vice Consul Liz Bell, representing the British Consulate in Alicante on behalf of British Consul, Paul Rodwell, who is currently on paternity leave following the birth of his second son. SACRIFICE Also in attendance were several representatives from Torrevieja Town Hall, including the Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, the Deputy Mayor, Joaquín Albaladejo, Councillor for Foreign Residents, past and present, Pedro Valero and Rosario Martinez and the Councillor for Culture, Luis Maria Pizana as well as the Director of the Municipal Office for the Attention of International Residents, Graham Knight. The Torrevieja Town Hall provided a loud speaker system for those members of the congregation sitting or standing outside and as the last post signalled the start of the two minutes silence, the congregation was encouraged to remember the great sacrifices made by the men and women who not only died in the first and second world wars, but also in
9
recent conflicts in the Falkland Islands, Iraq and Afghanistan. PRIDE Only the tweeting of the birds in the trees could be heard during the silence which concluded with the trumpet sounding the Reveille. Prayers and bible readings followed the two minute silence and the Chaplain then addressed the congregation with his own thoughts and experiences. This year not only marks the 10th Anniversary of the war in Afghanistan, but it is also the 90th Anniversary of the Royal British Legion and it was with pride that the Branch Standards were carried into and out of the church before and after the ceremony. The service finished with the hymn ‘Jerusalem’ and both the Spanish and British national anthems and then the traditional wreath laying service took place outside the church, accompanied by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums. After the ceremony, Eduardo Dolon, who also did a reading in Spanish during the service, told RTN how proud he was to have been invited to take part in an event of such enormous importance to the British community based in Torrevieja. He said: “The British community is fully integrated into the city of Torrevieja and the Town Hall has a great sense of achievement and pride at the active participation of the British community in all the social and cultural acts that we organise.”

Mr Fixit in court
Carole Saunders at Calpe’s rubbish dump
by Jack Troughton WANTED BUSINESSMAN Artacho Tellado Francisco has finally appeared in court to face allegations concerning the so-called Brugal case and a €6 million swindle. The businessman – who appeared at Denia after learning a warrant was issued for his arrest – is accused of playing a ‘Mr Fixit’ role in the saga and is a key witness afterallegedly negotiating illegal commissions for Calpe Town Hall insiders, including former mayor Javier Morato. The fraud involves inflated invoices for refuse being taken from the Calpe dump by Colsur SL and the fortune paid out to town hall coffers for non-existent rubbish. It was maintained that the businessman negotiated 600,000€ in commissions over the 12 years the scam was worked on the council. And it was discovered not only was the weight of refuse being transported away illegally inflated, the weighbridge at the dump was out of action. The businessman is alleged to have played a similar role in the Aquas de Calpe corruption case, ‘cash for contracts’ fraud involving
the overpayment of €1.5 million for pipe renewal work. DELAY However, because of repeated delays the prosecution was eventually shelved after running out of time. Councillor Carole Saunders told RTN the town hall remained “extremely upset” over the Brugal case because of the implications civil servants were involved in the fraud. And she said Cesar Sanchez, the current mayor, believed that the two men in office immediately before him were in some way answerable for not querying invoices for rubbish. “It appears that during 16 months in power Luis Serna knew nothing about the rubbish fraud and for a year before Ximo Tur discovered the fraud, he repeatedly signed documents saying he was happy with the removal service and all was correct – when obviously that was very far from the truth,” she said. This summer mountains of rubbish built up when Colsur refused to remove the refuse until the company was paid. Mr Tur had refused payment because of the size of the fraud. However, agreement was later reached between Calpe and Colsur.
Diver dies at the Peñon de Ifach THE GUARDIA Civil has reported that a 55-year-old Spanish man died on Sunday near the Peñon de Ifach while diving with a group from a diving school in Calpe, the second death in the area within the last two weeks. The victim was a member of a Sunday morning diving group paid for via travel agencies. The cause of death is suspected to be linked to a heart problem. The incident took place at around 10.30am at a depth of 18 metres. The man’s companions brought him to shore and began First Aid but were unable to revive him. A unit of the Emergency Medical Service SAMU also tried to revive him, unsuccessfully, certifying his death at the scene. The Civil Guard, as is usual in this type of event, has opened an inquiry into the causes of death, to be determined by autopsy. Sources could not specify whether the man was an experienced diver or otherwise.

Women mean business (from left) Mayor Jose Chulvi, Minister Leire Pajin, and Cristina Saucedo, the director General of Equality in Employment
by Jack Troughton BOUYANT BUSINESSWOMEN bucked the trend by taking an optimistic look at the future and key opportunities for success. More than 100 delegates were in Javea on Saturday for the Women’s Entrepreneurs Conference – jointly hosted by the town hall and the Department of Equal Rights. At the Parador Hotel, the Spanish Government’s Minister for Health, Social Policy, and Equality Leire Pajin and Javea’s Mayor Jose Chulvi highlighted the important role women must play in the business world. Ms Pajin spoke of the need for measures to make women more employable by improving training and career prospects. “We cannot afford to waste the talents of more than half of the population, much less, at present, when their talents are needed to
help overcome the current crisis,” she said. ROLE Mr Chulvi praised the double role many businesswomen played – also in many cases having to be the primary carers in family life. He also spoke of the achievements of the MEJ, the Javea Women in Business group, for spearheading training measures and helping women start their own businesses. And successful business leaders shared their experiences with the conference, countering the mood of pessimism spread by the economic downturn and backing the message: “Success is possible but only if you give it a try.” Advice was also given by the town hall’s economic development department, the Consortium for Economic Recovery and Activity of the Marina Alta (Creama), and national women in business groups.
One killed and six wounded in Bilbao stabbing by Jan Gamm A YOUNG Iranian man in his twenties went on a stabbing spree near the entrance to the Santutxu subway station in Bilbao on Monday at 9.40am, killing one person and seriously injuring six others. His first victims were a young woman and her partner – the girl’s screams brought passers-by to the scene, prompting the man to begin stabbing people at random. He then entered a nearby bar where he attacked more people and where customers tried to restrain him, one of whom, a 65-year-old man, received fatal stab wounds. The man was eventually overpowered and held until police arrived. The six victims that survived the attack are receiving hospital treatment with a seventh being treated for anxiety. The suspect is in the custody of the Basque Ertzaintza. Tomas del Hierro, Bilbao’s councillor for public safety, has extended condolences to the family of the deceased on behalf of the city and also praised

Police apprehend nine illegal immigrants
LOCAL POLICE in Benidorm arrested nine people on Sunday thought to be illegal immigrants, caught in the vicinity of Sierra Helada, Punta Llisera, after raising suspicion by leaving a vessel with its engine running. The boat was spotted by a hiker at around 11.30am who alerted pólice. A 40-minute police chase that included a team of 16 officers and the services of a helicopter eventually resulted in nine detainees (including one minor) of North African origin being transferred to the National Police Station. The 5 metre vessel with its 65hp outboard engine is now under guard by local police in the Port of Benidorm.

Theft of taxi causes road chaos
Is this your taxi Sir?
By Jan Gamm THE GUARDIA Civil in Callosa de Segura has detained a Romanian man after he stole a taxi and embarked on a crazy getaway to evade arrest on Monday afternoon. The man got into a taxi with some luggage and accompanied by two women outside the psychiatric centre of the Fontcalent Prison, supposedly requiring to be driven to Cox. After an uneventful journey the two women got out and paid the fare. The taxi driver left his seat to help with the luggage, at which point the front seat male passenger took the wheel and drove away! DANGEROUS The driver, in considerable distress, called in the police immediately. A patrol of the Catral Civil Guard identified the vehicle travelling at high speed at the Callosa de Segura roundabout before the driver headed for the CV-913, performing a series of dangerous stunts and racing the cab over the many speed bumps in the built-up area, narrowly missing pedestrians trying to cross the road, ignoring traffic lights and generally causing mayhem. CORNERED The man then began a mad ‘Keystone Cop’ style chase where the taxi was driven shoulder-to-shoulder with other vehicles and with sudden stops and turns in a crazy bid to outrun the police close on his tail, crossing three municipalities and more than 10 kilometres before agents were able to corner him and drag him from the vehicle in a narrow road leading to Catral, shortly before reaching the link to the Alicante-Cartagena motorway. The driver, 53, is facing an endless list of charges of theft of a motor vehicle; a series of traffic violations and resisting arrest; causing a risk to pedestrian safety; speeding; dangerous driving…

Exploding bulbs PLEASE WARN your readers about exploding Chinese light bulbs. I recently purchased some 60watt bulbs from a local Chinese shop. A couple of days later one exploded (yes exploded!) showering my wife in hot glass fragments and filament metal. A day later another one exploded, burning holes in a carpet. Needless to say all these Chinese bulbs have now been replaced with ones made in the EU. Des Johnson San Miguel de Salinas

letter of the week
Doing whatever they like I WONDER if members of other urbanisations could tell me if there is a law that allows presidents and administrators to do whatever they like for a community. For instance, getting a laptop and telephone and connection to the internet at a cost of 371.70€ for the laptop and a monthly sub of 41.3€0 to ‘keep good and quick correspondence with the owners’ as well as to ‘keep an eye on the community’. We have seen the monthly bills for the telephone, bought for the president three months after the annual meeting with no one knowing. Name withheld
They do not have Refreshing breath of fresh air for once the monopoly I REFER to this week’s letter from Peter Burke regarding Nueva Javea, of which it appears he is a staunch member. Surely for most of us not involved in the very murky world of either politics or party politics, when one votes at the Ayuntamiento elections one votes for the persons who you think would act in the best interests of your village or town. In the case of Nueva Javea, they seem to have spent the last two years washing their dirty linen in public and effectively self-destructed some time before the last Town Hall elections. Their recent press releases regarding the ‘defections’ are a case in point. The “standards of morality” to which he refers seem to have gone missing from that
party’s behaviour. Why not just bite the bullet, sort out your own mess internally and decline any press frontage/brickbats until you have a clear statement of intent for the way forward? Surely that is what we ordinary citizens would prefer? As for Messrs Planelles and Catala, it seems from what I read and hear that they have been acting well on behalf of Xabia and not acting in their own or party politics’ interest: long may they serve this community, in whatever capacity or colours they choose. The whole council seems to be a refreshing breath of fresh air for once, working under extremely difficult monetary constraints to help improve the lives of its citizens. John Price
FURTHER TO the letter of the week in issue 628 regarding Mercadona’s attempt to charge again for a re-useable bag, I anticipated the possibility of this happening so I use Carrefour reusable bags at Mercadona and Mercadona reuseable bags at Carrefour. This also sends them the message that they do not have a monopoly of your business! Malcolm Drew, Orihuela Costa
Thankyou everyone at HAH I WOULD like to express on behalf of the whole family our sincerest, heartfelt thanks for the support, care, compassion and friendship the Help at Home Team afforded Elva during her struggle and ultimate passing away due to cancer recently. Though Elva was a brave, positive tower of strength throughout her illness, you gave her invaluable support when she needed it most, both in her home and eventually in hospital in Cartagena. We would particularly like to thank Lesley, Paul, Mary, Lynda, Brenda, Audrey, Evelyn, Meg and Sue for all their support. Serious illness and death is never easy to cope with, especially away from your native homeland. Through the excellent work carried out by you and your team, Elva and her family were able to continue to keep going and ultimately face the end of her life, safe in the knowledge that your friendship, help, advice, and support were never far away. Love to you all, Steve Sutcliffe
Stop complaining about it RE: NO such thing as a free lunch: I think it’s wrong what you have said in this story - I myself have received my yearly premium from the company and so have other people I have spoken to that invested:, just because one person does not like what he or she invested in (if they have invested) it does not mean that everyone is going to be the same. No there is no such thing
as a free lunch but some people have made it their life to go on all these free excursions just to see what they can get out of it. And everyone knows that at the end of the day these free lunches have a catch so they should stop complaining and stop going on the excursions and that all I have to say about this story. N White
Disgusted by the filth RECENTLY ACQUIRING a dog has necessitated me walking in areas around La Cala not normally frequented by the majority of the tourists to this area. As a result, I am becoming increasingly disgusted by the absolute filth discarded by the three outdoor markets that appear here every week. There are absolutely no toilet or fresh water facilities in these areas. In addition to vast quantity of cartons, bottles and paper lying about in the woods nearby, human faeces are in abundance, originating from the stallholders. How this area is not riddled with Cholera I do not know: I can only suggest that the next time one purchases their cooked chickens, cheeses, cured meats, fruit and vegetables from these markets, one should take a moment to speculate as to where the stallholders hands may have been immediately prior to one being served. We all know the Spanish appear to be happy living like gypsies most of the time but for the rest of us I would ask that perhaps the Council should begin dispensing human waste bags in these areas similar to those bags that I carry around when walking the dog. Have you been Iberswitched yet? RISING ELECTRICITY prices is a much talked about subject and affects us all. UK money-saving expert Martin Lewis appeared on GMTV’s This Morning programme last Friday and appealed to everyone to “fix their kilowatt rate” as a matter of urgency. He described how the best way to achieve savings is to avoid price increases. Although he was talking about UK residents, the same applies here. We have seen three substantial price increases in electricity costs in the last 12 months and the future looks to hold much of the same. De-regulation means we can choose who we pay for our supply and with over 160 companies competing for our business, there are some very good offers available. Of course, understanding the offers is a completely different matter. Luckily help is at hand to see through the small print and red tape. Iberswitch SL is an independent company offering a switching service from your current provider to one with whom they have negotiated special terms. Other than providing the information they need to do the switch, there is no need for you to do anything - the entire process is handled by them. The savings you will see on your bill relate specifically to the price hikes that you avoid by using their service. In other words, if electricity prices increase by 20% in the next 12 months, this would be your saving. In some cases, Iberswitch can fix your rate, protecting you

A MASSIVE 110.03ct yellow diamond known as the ‘SunDrop Diamond’ sold for US$12.2 million under Sotheby’s hammer this week. The World’s largest, the diamond is pear-shaped and a ‘fancy vivid yellow’ - the top lot at Sotheby’s semi-annual jewellery sale in Geneva on Tuesday night, netting a total of $69 million. The second priciest lot was a cushion-shaped white diamond weighing a measly 38.88cts - sold for US$6.9 million, including the premium. At present vintage signature pieces are the rage for jeweladdicts, with a 1930s vintage necklace by French jeweller Cartier composing of five strands of graduated natural pearls set with diamond plaques bringing $3.3 million; roughly three times its pre-sale estimate.

Black in Benidorm...
I HEAR on the jungle drums (an apposite medium as you’ll see later) that an old favourite act is currently Watts In back in Benidorm. “Oi, Watts!” chuckles Dene Michael, “Who’re you calling old?!” Dene, along with Ian Britain Robinson forming the pop duo ‘Black Lace’, return to their old haunts for one week only. By If you’re quick you can catch them tonight (Friday
Paul Watts
18th) down in Benidorm at the Talk of the Town. “We’re performing as Shoewaddywaddy,” Dene says, “and we’re being joined by our original group member Peter King.” He adds, “It’s just like the old days.” As many RTN readers will know, Dene was based on the Costa Blanca for over ten years and played a big part in Benidorm’s entertainment scene. Dene was also involved with RTN’s Children in Need extravaganza back in 2005. Since returning to the UK in 2009 Dene and Ian have been on a whirlwind career path. They’ve made countless appearances around the country, cut new records and starred in two national advertising campaigns. The last time I met the lads was on a cold October morning and they had just donned orange fezzes to record an advert launching Easy Jet’s new service to Agadir. You can just guess which song was tailored to fit that destination? “Agadir, dir, dir, London Gatwick all the way…” And last May, Black Lace was having fun and frolics on the beach. Not on Benidorm’s beach, mind you, but down there on Blackpool’s. The boys and a cast of hundreds cong-cong-congaed down across the shoreline to film a video for the launch of the group’s re-worked 1980s classic, Do the Conga. This followed the ‘runaway’ success of the ‘thetrainline.com’ ads that featured Black Lace - you must have seen them, surely? Anyway, the producers thought it timely to re-release the song onto an unwary public. Dene and Ian went back into the studio, brought the song up to date and filmed the accompanying video, much to the delight of Blackpool holiday-makers. I think it almost made the Guinness Book of Records as the longest conga – but don’t quote me. “We had as much fun with that,” laughs Dene, “as
Crissy Rock and Dene with Santa and Rudolf
we did with the ‘Agadoo Mambo 2009’ video that we filmed down in Albir.” As Dene once lived in Albir I wondered how he felt to be back. He chuckles, “I know you always say it’s the best place on earth Paul - and you could be right. I’m really happy to be here again.” Dene and Ian have been reacquainted with many old friends this week but one is noticeably absent. “Crissy’s in the jungle,” laughs Dene, “so we’ve missed seeing her.” Crissy Rock, wellknown in Benidorm, is currently suffering the squeamish tasks set for her by Ant and Dec in I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here. “Poor ole Crissy,” says Dene, “she wasn’t happy in that helicopter, was she?” Thanks to her part in the ITV series Benidorm, Crissy Rock is now
a nationally recognised character. Dene asks, “Do you want an exclusive for RTN?” Oh, go on then Dene. “Well,” he says, “Crissy’s releasing a record on 5th December and it’s called ‘Christmas Time’.” Crissy’s record also features the vocal talents of one Dene Michael too. And before she headed off for the privations of the Australian jungle she got together with him to film the video. “I think you’ll like it,” he winks. Hmmm, I think we should have a couple of copies of the single for an RTN Christmas competition Dene, don’t you? Any road, you can keep track of Black Lace on their Facebook page and don’t forget you can see them as ‘Shoewaddywaddy’ tonight in Benidorm. Watts in Britain, missing all the fun...

The youth club meets each week in the church in la Siesta and the show was put on to raise money and also as a thank you to the club’s many supporters. Youth Leader Maggie Dew, said, “We knew we had a lot of talented young people in our club but when we decided to put on the concert, we never imagined quite how much and what a variety of talent we had. In the end we put on an amazing show that the audience just didn’t want to end.”
paid for the foundation responsible for the home. Ken Murray told RTN the Christian fellowship had been supporting the Preventorio for a number of years. “During a recent visit I noticed a new boiler still in its cardboard box. Barry Lloyd from the Rotarians had called me asking if the club could help and I said about the children running out of hot water. PROJECT “We got an estimate from the original contractor Silvasol, the project was started by other charities but ran out of money, and presented it to the Rotarians – they had a look and said they would give 1,500€ on condition it was completed. We contacted the foundation and they had a meeting and said they would make the rest up.” Ken said the boiler was now installed but

Vancouver is the largest metropolitan area in Western Canada. Located at the southwestern corner of the coastal province of British Columbia, it is frequently ranked as one of the best cities to live in. It´s a place well worth a visit! Known for its stunning scenery, it is a place where you could theoretically ski in the mountains, windsurf in the ocean and play a round of golf, all in the same (energetic!) day. It´s isn´t all about the outdoors, however, as there are a variety of theatre and concert halls and cultural events are staged throughout the year. One of the best times to visit the city is in late July/early August to take in the HSBC Celebration of Light, a four night extravaganza of fireworks over the English Bay, or perhaps in May to enjoy and participate in the EAT! Vancouver – The Everything Food and Cooking Festival. Celebrity chefs, local restaurants and wineries all take place
for a 3 day extravaganza offering tastings, demonstrations and competitions and shopping opportunities. Throughout the year there are yet more events – the Vancouver Film Festival, the Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival, music and folk festivals – there´s always something going on! Once you have eaten, drank and taken your fill of the city life, why not search out the stunning scenery of the Rocky Mountains by way of the luxury tourist train, the Rocky Mountaineer? Company Director and Spanish Tax Consultant
Four reasons to move the ownership of your Spanish property into a UK Limited Company before 31st December 2011 AS THE Spanish tax year draws to a close we would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the benefits of placing your Spanish property into your own UK Company (which we can provide) before the end of this year to mitigate Spanish taxation. PERSONAL TAX DECLARATIONS If you own a property in Spain, whether as a Resident or not you have a legal obligation to submit a Tax Declaration to the Spanish Government detailing income deriving from the property. Non Residents who do not receive income from the property incur income Tax based on the value of the property. However, if by the 1st January 2012 you have invested your Spanish property into your own UK Company then you will not be required to submit a personal declaration unless you are a Spanish Resident. If the property is owned by a UK Company a declaration does have to be submitted but this does not have to include an assumed rental income. WEALTH TAX The Wealth Tax in Spain is part of the annual Tax Declaration and had previously been reduced to zero
but in recent months the Spanish Government has revised and increased this rate for some property Owners. UK companies are not liable for Wealth Tax and therefore transferring your property into a UK Company before the 1st January 2012 would be very beneficial and could save this potentially costly Tax. OFFSHORE COMPANIES Offshore companies based in countries such as Gibraltar, The Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey which own Spanish property are charged an annual tax by the Spanish Government of 3% of the value of the property. The UK has a treaty with Spain so UK companies do not incur this Tax. PLUSVALIA TAX Plusvalia is a Tax on the land which your property stands on and is taxed by your Town Hall from the last date a change was made at the Land Registry or the date you took ownership. The Plusvalia is payable when your sell the property, by the Beneficiaries when they inherit the property or when you change ownership into a UK Company. This means it makes more sense to pay this Tax today as part of the costs in

Claiming for debts in Spain: The actions to take, and the timescales and deadlines that may be claimed by
Carlos Baos
of White & Baos Abogados English & Spanish Solicitors
FOR THE past five years my neighbour has owed me a large sum of money but due to family and health issues I have never claimed for it. Can I still make a claim after such a long time? Thank you for your email. Incorporated within our answer we are going to provide some basic tips to be kept in mind when claiming for debts in Spain. In principle, you can claim against your neighbour for the above indicated debt provided it is properly due and legally liable. You should be able to prove its existence and accuracy by any means permitted by Law, which typically are: a signed contract between the parties, an acknowledgement of the debt signed by the debtor, an invoice, receipt, money transfer, etc to verify that the debt is owed. To facilitate the claim you should obtain as many personal identification details of the debtor as possible, such as his or her name and surname, their NIE or NIF, passport number, address etc. In order to have the greatest likelihood of obtaining success recovering the debt owed, the first step will be to prove as substantively as possible the existence and the liability to the
debt, by means of a public (signed in front of a Public Notary) or private document which describes the obligation for payment, the amount of the debt, details the type and amounts of the instalments, and the time allowed to demand the debt and evidences as many details as possible concerning the debtor. We advise you to visit your lawyer for their assistance in making sure that the document is drafted correctly and complies with the necessary requirements for a successful future claim. As for the elapsed period of 5 years, we can inform you that the Spanish Civil Code determines that the right to claim is not timeless, i.e. the right to claim is not for ever and indeed the Spanish Civil Code establishes different time limits to start legal action. It states in article 1961 that ‘the actions are prescribed by the mere lapse of time set by the Law’, this means that once the debt exceeds the legal time limit allowed to claim for it, even if the debt still exists, if you have not claimed for it, you will not be able to do so as it is taken that you have suffered the loss of your legal right by failing to exercise it during a period of time fixed by Law (prescripción extintiva). It is therefore important to determine the precise legal time limit to claim your debt, since only then will we know if the debtor could rely upon the above mentioned defence of prescripción extintiva. In your particular case, it is not possible for us to determine the deadline period for the claim, as this really depends on the type of action you intend to initiate, and the type of obligation of the original debt, and this information is unfortunately not stated within your enquiry.
However, to give some general guidelines, we can broadly confirm that the Spanish Civil Code establishes the following: 1) A general time prescription for personal legal actions of 15 years, in the case that a specific time limit it is not established (Article 1964). 2) The Spanish Civil Code sets out a series of Special Periods depending on the type of action, highlighting among others: • 2.1) Claims for children’s maintenance, rent amounts, and any other payment to be done yearly or in shorter intervals, will expire after 5 years (Article 1966). • 2.2) Legal actions concerning obligations to pay Lawyers, Registrars, Notary, Surveyors, etc, will expire after 3 years (Article 1967). • 2.3) Legal actions claiming for obligations arising from the fault or negligence of the matters included in Article 1902 of the Spanish Civil Code known as tort liability, will expire after 1 year. So in your particular case we will need to check what type of period limitations will apply, and whether the debtor may invoke the aforementioned defence of prescripción extintiva or not. Should any reader find himself or herself in this situation or similar please do not hesitate to contact us and the appropriate advice will be provided. QROPS...What’s all the fuss about? by
Paul Clarke
AES International
I THOUGHT I would write this month in an attempt to clarify what all this QROPS fuss is about. I will keep this brief and in plain English as so many writers are very technical which can deter some from seeking more information and advice.
QROPS means ‘Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme’. On 6th April 2006 the UK government launched QROPS as a means to simplify pensions. If you have lived abroad for more than five complete tax years a QROPS may be a better option for you. People are generally confused regarding the ‘5 year rule’. Basically, you have to be Non-UK resident for five consecutive UK tax years to effect and/or benefit from a QROPS. Most types of UK pensions can be QROPS’d but the UK state pension cannot: this is a question I am asked many times. Many believe that you have to have a large pension fund (£100,000+) to effect a QROPS. This is not the case. I have moved many funds for clients below
this amount. Next, is the question: “What is the best jurisdiction and who provides the best QROPS?” This cannot be answered here as this is complex and ‘one size does not fit all’. The importance at this point should be put on ensuring you take advice from qualified, regulated and licensed independent Financial Advisers. There are many ‘agents’ all over Spain and Europe cold-calling and purporting to be QROPS specialists without any formal qualifications or experience. These ‘agents’ also charge disproportionately high fees. Ask them to prove they are regulated in Spain and registered with the Spanish Regulators the CNMV and the DGS (more on this on my website). Clients usually transfer UK pensions into QROPS to benefit from far greater flexibility regarding Investment and taxation options. Others transfer to release some or all of their pension/s to assist them with their current lifestyle needs. The process is straightforward in most
QROPS pension transfer
cases and involves an initial meeting to look at the possibility of transferring to a QROPS. If this proceeds further, a simple letter of authority is completed by the client to enquire as to the pension/s transfer value, current and projected benefits. Next (usually several weeks later) is a further meeting to
present a bespoke client report showing all the ‘upsides and downsides’ of transferring to a QROPS including disclosure of all costs in a transparent manner. Only at this point will the client have all the facts in front of them to enable them to make an informed choice.

Value by default STERLING’S RECOVERY against the Euro has been driven by the crisis in the single currency rather than the strength of the pound. By Jack Troughton This week Sterling has hovered between 1.16€ and 1.18€ but RTN was told the value of the pound had “gone up by default.” David Kerns, a dealing manager and market analyst with foreign exchange specialist Moneycorp, said: “In the short and medium term I think the pound will struggle at about the 1.18€ level – the pound will go up not on its own strength but on the weakness of the Euro.” He said the UK was in an awkward position, unemployment figures announced on Wednesday showed a rise to 8.3% but the numbers without jobs in the 16 to 24 age bracket had gone above 1 million for the first time. “It is a significant signal things are extremely bad.” FIGHT David said there was also a lack of growth in the British economy and investment was down. “Companies are looking to cut costs rather than to invest, they can see storm clouds gathering and want to be in a position to fight recession.” However, he said if things were bad in the UK they were a great deal worse in Spain – overall unemployment was 21% and a massive 42% in 16 to 24-year-olds. He added: “Things are gradually taking a turn for the
worse in the UK, which is why the pound is not at 1.20€ or above and we are still around the 1.17€ mark but the UK economy is not in desperate crisis yet. “The inflation report shows that UK growth is down to 1% but that is a figure that has always been known to the market – over the last three to six months the growth figures have been revised down.” CHINA But David said every nation around the world was revising down its growth prospects “even China” and believed: “It is a global phenomenon driven by the Eurozone crisis.” And he said Sterling’s immediate future was linked to Europe. “If we get the right songs being sung from Greece, Italy, and Spain as well with its new prime minister, if some confidence is restored, we could stay in the range of 1.14€ to 1.18€. “If the Eurozone does not get its act together quickly enough, we could see an exchange rate of 1.20€. “But if Greece goes and the focus is on Italy it could be 1.25€ but I would like to think that would not be the outcome and the Eurozone will get together and change the law so the European Central Bank can act in an unhindered manner.”

What to expect if you don’t declare your tax RULES HAVE no real authority without sanctions. Behind every query about legal and tax obligations there is an implied question – what happens if I don’t?
by
Suzanne O’Connell Customer Care at Ábaco
Last week I wrote about the Spanish Tax Authority’s Anti Fiscal Fraud Plan and the letters they are sending out. These letters are targeted at residents and nonresidents who have not, according to official records, made an annual tax declaration. Having received this piece of information you are now likely to be ruminating over the impact this might have on you. If you already make an annual tax declaration as a resident (due in June) or a non-resident (due in December) you have probably stopped reading this by now. If you haven’t, chances are you are weighing up what might happen. What is the likelihood that your name will be flagged up? Will you be in a position to receive the letter when it arrives? What will happen if you don’t do anything about it?
We’d have to have a crystal ball to be able to give you the answers to all these questions. However, we can give you an idea of the sanctions you might receive - depending upon what you decide to do, or don’t do. SCENARIO 1: YOU HAVE RECEIVED A LETTER AND ACT UPON IT The letter informs you that there is no record of you having made an annual tax declaration in 2007, 2008 and 2009. You contact a tax representative and catch up on your tax. You will have a fine to pay but will avoid a sanction: you can begin the year with a clear conscience and without peering in your letterbox for communications from Agencia Tributaria (Spanish Tax Authority). SCENARIO 2: YOU HAVE RECEIVED A LETTER AND DON’T ACT UPON IT It’s the same letter: you haven’t made your Spanish tax declaration, but instead of clearing up the situation
as the letter suggests you decide to keep your fingers crossed instead. We can’t be sure when or where an investigation will take place. However, we can tell you that any further enquiries will result not only in a fine but also sanctions. The sanctions applied are at different levels but the circumstances outlined in scenario 2 are considered to be, at the very minimum, a serious offence. Each case is assessed individually and the weight of the penalty depends upon the degree of deception and the extent of the fraud. It could amount to as much as 50% of the original tax bill. The Tax Authority is warning us that it means business. You’d be wise to take action voluntarily and start the year with a clean sheet. The deadline for non-resident tax declarations is December 31st. If you want to put your taxes in order we can help you. Iberdrola warns cost of lighting to consumers could rise 250€ - 400€ per year THE COMPANY has criticised the Renewable Energy Plan approved last Friday by the Council of Ministers. Iberdrola Chairman Ignacio Sanchez Galan says the action plan “does not seem to be running in the right direction” with its commitment to developing more expensive technologies such as solar, thermal and photovoltaic solutions, accelerated at a rate that will leave conventional providers with no choice other than to pass rising costs on to the consumer.

The last two Ps: Promotion and Place Promotion THERE ARE four aspects to promotion, each of which I will go through in turn.
a friend and get €10 off your next purchase’... These sales promotions do have an initial cost, of course, but a welltargeted promotion should more than pay for itself.
ADVERTISING This is the most complex form of promotion, especially in the digital age. Having worked out who our intended audience is – by age, geography, lifestyle, family status – we then need to work out how best to reach them. For small and medium businesses, the choice is daunting: - Newspapers and magazines - Radio - Fliers, and - The internet In the northern Costa Blanca area alone, the number of free papers and magazines is extensive and many attract a general but wide readership. We also need to give consideration to how we can mix these various forms of advertising, as none is likely to work well in isolation as a combination of methods.
PERSONAL SELLING This is a time-consuming form of promotion, but depending on the type of business, this type of promotion could pay dividends. For example, a restaurant could offer free samples of its food by walking along the main street of the town. Another form of personal selling is to take a stand at a trade or consumer exhibition.
SALES PROMOTION There are many forms of sales promotion, such as coupons in newspapers, ‘buy one, get one free’ offers, ‘introduce
PUBLICITY/PR Whilst we would not agree that there is no such thing as ‘bad publicity’, a good PR story can be extremely valuable, especially if the event is run in a newspaper or on the radio at no cost to the owner! Examples include hosting a charity event or making the world’s largest pizza, to use an extreme example. In the digital age, we also need to consider reviews. Using Pricerunner (http://www.pricerunner.co.uk) as an example, users of the site rate the retailer as well as the products sold. Would you be more inclined to use a retailer which had 100 good reviews from customers or 100 bad ones?

The Spanish to spend more on gadgets this Christmas
A DELOITTE study has analysed consumer trends and also explored opinions about the economy, revealing that Spanish consumers this year will ‘take a break’ over Christmas and The Kings and spend more than last year, especially on low-priced gadgets. 72% of 18,000 people interviewed via the internet believe that Spain is in recession but 23% think things will look up significantly next year. The average Spanish Christmas spend has been set at 668€ per person – 13€ more than last year. It was also found that the Spanish are willing to save on home shopping, leisure and entertainment outlets, but not food, health or education. And for the first time, Spanish ‘wish lists’ include things like spa visits or hiring a Porsche for a single day’s drive and buying gifts online. Kids’ star gifts are educational books and toys with teens favouring video games and sportswear. So now you know what to buy your Spanish neighbours for Christmas!

Spanish lessons by
Jane Cronin
A weekly ‘cut out and keep’ feature helping you to learn basic Spanish for everyday needs
The Letter THIS WEEK we arrive at the third of our vowels, that is, the letter I. Just like the other four vowel sounds, the I is a short single sound, in this case made with the lips pulled out to either side. The resulting vowel is longer and more open than the English “i” as in the word “it”, and shorter than our “ee” as in the word “eat”. You may have noticed than Spanish speakers of English have problems differentiating between these two English sounds, confusing “fillings” with “feelings”, “ship” with “sheep” or “sin” with “seen”. This is because in Spanish only the one I sound exists. We can find this letter at the beginnings, middles and ends of words, where it always maintains the same quality. It is also frequently found linked to other vowels, such as in the words aire or seis. In these cases the I sound is preserved in tact, but as it follows straight on from the A or E in the word, it appears to change the overall sound. This effect is called a diphthong, meaning a double vowel sound. As ever, we have many similar words in English and Spanish beginning with the letter I, and here are some. Don’t forget that in every single one of them, the I is pronounced exactly the same as my description above: idea (idea), ideal (ideal), idealizer (idealize), identidad (identity), ignorante (ignorant), idiota (idiot), imbecile (imbecile), imagen (image). Now here are some that are negatives formed with different prefixes, similar to the way we do this in English: imposible (impossible) ilógico (illogical), impaciente (impatient), inaceptable (unacceptable). And finally a word I’m rather fond of, the Spanish for “iceberg”, which is iceberg pronounced with our long Spanish I and the “theh” sound to follow. (something like – eethehberg) I have a rather interesting estranged cousin this week, the word ilusión. Despite appearances, this word does not have the sense of the English word “illusion” which involves circus trickery, or else deception and disappointment. The Spanish ilusión actually means hope and excitement and is a highly positive word. Children look forward to their gifts from the kings with ilusión or we might look forward to a holiday or a visit from a friend with mucha ilusión. There is an annual charity action in Spain called “Un juguete, Una ilusión” (A
‘I’
toy, A joy) which involves collecting money at Christmas time to buy toys for children in poorer countries who would not otherwise receive a present. A very friendly and common word beginning with I is “igualmente”. This can be translated directly as “equally”, but it is very often used when we would say in English “the same to you”. A time when you hear this a lot is at the beginning of January when people greet each other with “Feliz Año” or “Feliz Año Nuevo” (Happy New Year!) The standard response to this greeting is “Igualmente” – “and the same to you!” Another occasion when we hear this word a lot is on meeting someone new. We usually say “encantado” (man speaking) or “encantada” (woman speaking) meaning “delighted (to meet you)”. This is sometimes said by both parties, but equally common is to hear the first person say “encantado” and the second person to reply “igualmente”. Another frequently heard “I” word is “izquierda” meaning “left” (as in the opposite of right). This is a curious word as it is actually one of the few words in Castilian Spanish that comes originally from the Basque language, spoken in the northern Basque region of Spain. It not only refers to directions, it also means left politically speaking, with left-wing being “ala izquierda”. If you happen to be on the left of politics you would say “soy de izquierdas”. Likewise you can say “soy de derechas” (I’m on the political right). Another use of this word is in the idiom “la mano izquierda” (the left hand). This is a bullfighting term and refers to the subtle manipulation of the hand holding the cloak, preparing the bull for a strike from the right hand. In everyday life we use this idiom to talk about the subtleties we sometimes need to deal with difficult people or situations. For example, we would say things like “se necesita mucha mano izquierda” to describe the diplomatic or manipulative skills needed to deal with a complicated people-management problem. Finally, I’ve got a good oldfashioned saying this week: one that we have all heard in times past and it contains two I words. De buenas intenciones está empedrado el infierno. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

SUMMER HAS passed - the heat was unbearable and temperatures difficult to withstand - and if you’re overweight, it would have been even more difficult for you. Unbeknownst to you, the extra pounds you’re carrying merely make your day even harder. You might jeer and scorn my words, but they’re the truth. It may seem like a natural progression- it’s hot, so you sweat. You’re sweating, that’s why your skin chafes. But if those extra pounds didn’t exist, you wouldn’t sweat as much and the excess skin on your body wouldn’t chafe and become sore. It’s easy to discount your low confidence and low self esteem, but you’d be amazed at how much brighter your day is when a pair of pants fit correctly. Amazing how much happier you feel when you look in the mirror and see how good you look. Having been there and done that and bought the t-shirt, I can totally empathise with you if you’re just about to start your weight loss journey. Hypnotherapy is a wonderful complimentary therapy that focuses on discovering the root cause of any and all issues. Rather than focusing on the superficial, it investigates why you reach for that pack of biccies after a bad day at work. Over the years I have tried every weight loss programme and therapy going and have ended up much heavier than when I started! Even before my Hypnoband was fitted, I had lost a stone since my first session with you two weeks earlier - amazing! For the first time ever, I am able to leave food on my plate and even watch others eating...my mother won’t believe it! I look forward to a much slimmer future confident in your support and encouragement. Linda.” “Hello Mark, As it has been around 5 months since I saw you last, I thought I would let you know how things are with me. I have now lost 12.5kilos, averaging 2.5kilos a month, which is fine for me, but even better,

my blood / glucose is so much better. I went for my check up this morning, and the nurse was very pleased, as the level for the second time running was within normal levels. If this keeps up I should be able to reduce my medication soon which is what I was aiming for when I came to see you. This is so fantastic, and I cannot thank you enough. I consciously eat better, with smaller portions, and appreciate food more. Once again, thank you for your wonderful HypnoBand. Regards Sandy.” Hi Mark “I have been diabetic for a number of years and this, added to my general weight, has caused me many problems. I have tried on many occasions to diet and been under specialist diabetic consultants who have always recommended nutritional programs to aid my general health on both fronts. However, the results have had little success. I have lost 19lbs in weight and continue to lose weight at about 3lbs per month. At the start of the programme I was injecting insulin four times a day - about 82 units per day in total. I now inject three times a day and my total intake of units are less than 50 per day. I have this week kept my appointment with my Diabetic Consultant who also informed me that apart from achieving lower daily readings, my six month blood test shows a reduction of 30% in my blood sugar levels. He has, in consequence, ceased my six monthly visits to him referring me now to just my GP. For anyone in a similar situation regarding weight loss or diabetes I would certainly recommend trying your Hypnoband programme and I have no objections to you using my recommendations to any of your potential clients. The dangers of Botox and fillers ‘A NEW surgeon is offering heart transplants on the Costa Blanca at knock-down prices! Costs are kept to a minimum by employing unqualified nursing staff and to save money on equipment and medications cheap alternatives are sourced via the internet…’ Would you consult this doctor? Of course you wouldn’t! And, obviously, such a surgery is not really opening - but if everyone can see how dangerous this would be, why do so many people consistently put themselves into the hands of unqualified, non-medically trained people when it comes to cosmetic fillers and Botox injections? Cosmetic fillers and Botox have become so popular in recent years that many people don’t think twice about seeking treatment from unqualified practitioners. But it can – and does – go wrong: in one of the worst cases, an American woman ended up paralysed and on a ventilator after an osteopath (who had been struck off) injected her with a diluted form of Botulinum Toxin rather than Botox when she visited a private clinic. She had no idea that he was an osteopath – or that he’d been struck off. Such extreme cases are rare, but the risk of botched procedures or medical complications that non-medical professionals are unable to deal with remains.
“Dermal fillers are perfectly safe when administered by a qualified doctor with an in-depth understanding of facial anatomy,” says British Association of Cosmetic Doctors (BACD) chairman, John Curran. “But it is not adequate to blindly stick a needle in someone’s face with scant knowledge of the potential risks, which can include facial necrosis or disfigurement. If dermal fillers are administered without medical supervision, how are complications such as anaphylactic shock to be dealt with, without resuscitation equipment? Backing his comments are the results of a BACD survey, which found that more than half of their 250-plus members have treated patients who had experienced complications at the hands of inexperienced or incompetent therapists. In Spain, only qualified doctors that have a license to administer such treatments and that work in licensed clinics are permitted to carry out these cosmetic procedures, but there are still many unqualified people offering fillers and Botox illegally. The Costa Blanca’s British GP, Najma Hussain, from Medcare advises: “People should always take the precaution of checking qualifications and asking to see licenses. As long as people ensure they are dealing with a qualified, licensed professional, Botox and facial fillers are safe treatments that
Blood / sugar testing in the street TORREVIEJA HOSPITAL has taken to the streets during its launch of a public awareness campaign aimed at detecting a patient’s individual predisposition to develop Diabetes. In a bid to achieve early diagnosis of the onset of Diabetes, the public is invited for glucose measurement testing by medical professionals at the Health Centre in Guardamar. Those tested are also given advice on the symptoms of Diabetes and tips on diet and exercise.
It can be safe to use Botox and fillers but make sure you use a qualified therapist
can produce wonderful results.” Both treatments can erase wrinkles – and years – leaving patients looking younger, fresher and happier. So it is safe to go ahead - just don’t take the risk of using an unqualified therapist. Medcare British GP practice offers safe Botox and facial fillers at its surgery in Benijofar. All treatments are carried out by a fully-licensed doctor registered in both Spain and the UK. Sleeping well is the key to good health
THE VITAL key to good health and staying younger for longer may be attributed to getting a good night’s sleep according to recent research. The good old biological clock is thought to be at the heart of maintaining a healthy prognosis and optimum physical performance with many genetic mechanisms thought to be at the mercy of the sleep cycle. Cancer research is exploring the significance of healthy sleeping patterns that could prevent cell division, while for Diabetics, it is now thought that the conversion of sugars into fat, an event that should occur only a certain number of times per day that for Diabetics happens over a 24 hour period, indicates a malfunction of the ‘body clock’. Researchers from the Laboratory of Regulatory Biology at the Salk Institute found that every morning an enzyme reaction ‘kick starts’ the body while a ‘brake protein’ sends it back to sleep.

PROMINENT: their chairs are stationary their scooters are very much on the move! NEVER MISSING a chance to present their products, Marja and Eddie Schermacher from PROMINENT in Teulada presented their riser chairs and scooters to the Euroclub Denia recently, with the audience much amused by Eddie’s antics. The Euroclub is a mainly German nationality based social club that meets monthly for various social events. However, once a year the Company members are given the chance to present their products to the members and this time as well as German firms making presentations, Spanish and other nationalities took part.
Most presentations were done using a powerpoint presentation and presenting from the front. However, when it came to PROMINENT’s turn, Eddie set about showing off the excellent handling ability and agility of their scooters by driving around the audience almost at breakneck speed! Quite a way to impress your audience; they had difficulty following his whereabouts as he darted around the large room. It occurred to RTN that instead of Schermacher, Eddie’s surname should be changed to Schumacher…he would be very much at home in the company of Michael and Ralf!
One lady from the audience putting the riser chair through its paces
Eddie ‘returning to base’ after his rapid journey around the audience
Next Marja presented their riser chairs. PROMINENT’s riser chairs are very different from other bulk standard riser chairs in that every PROMINENT chair is created to take into account the unique measurements of the user (their height, weight, build and health) to ensure the right seating position. Taking these measurements ensures correct support for the neck, back and the small of the back and is essential in creating a really good quality chair with proper back support which will improve posture and therefore eliminate or reduce back pain and stiffness.
At the large PROMINENT showroom in Teulada you will find a huge range of armchairs, recliners and riser chairs that can be tested, and then measurements taken to obtain exactly the right custom-made product. You can also ask Eddie to demonstrate their scooter range, and have a ‘test drive’ for yourself. For information please telephone 96 579 3229 or call into the showroom at Poligono Industrial Teulada. There is ample parking and the opening hours are MondaySaturday 10am – 2pm. Website: www.prominentespana.com

Nothing happens Margaret via email asks: HI AUNTY. When I go onto the Marks and Spencer website and try to put things in my shopping basket nothing happens! It just says my basket is empty also when I try to go to the next page of items it just fades and will not move on. I had no problems two weeks ago when I used it and all the other shopping sites I use are all okay: any ideas? Aunty Says: This could simply be a Flash Player or Java update Margaret. Go to adobe.com and download the latest Flash Player and to oracle.com and get the latest Java for your computer. If these don’t resolve it then download and run Ccleaner from download.com and let me know how you get on.

I receive many emails and jokes which I forward to friends and family but can you tell me how to forward emails without everyone else’s email address going with them? I’m told it has something to do with Cc & Bcc, but not sure what to do? Aunty Says: Hello David. You’re correct with the Cc and Bcc (which indecently stands for Carbon

Jim via email asks: I HAVE just bought an Acer laptop and being very naive I did not realise that most of the format would be in Spanish. Is there any way this can be converted into English? It has Windows 7 home premium if that helps at all. I would be grateful for any help you may be able to give me. Aunty Says: Hello Jim. The safest and most reliable way of doing this is to reinstall Windows with a fresh copy in English. Let me know where you are and I can maybe recommend a reliable company to do it.

You simply add your chosen email recipient’s address(s) into the Bcc: box, in the same way you would normally in the To: box, and it will appear to each of them that only they received the email. Transactions always in Spanish
Mike via email asks: HI AUNTY. I follow your page when I can. I live in Spain and have a Spanish bank account but I can’t speak or read Spanish. My problem is any ebay.co.uk or Paypal transactions always come through in Spanish, and the same with iTunes. I have tried to contact all concerned but no joy. Aunty Says: I know Paypal can be a bit awkward to setup with a Spanish bank account but there is a setting when you create a new account to say you are in Spain but you’d like everything in English. Go to the ‘Crear cuenta’ link at the top of the homepage and you should see a drop down list for ‘Su pais’ which will need to be ‘España’ and ‘Su idioma’ change to English. I had major problems as I had a UK bank account so I ended up opening a Spanish account just for my Ebay, Paypal and Amazon transactions. You can sometimes force websites to show in English by using a .co.uk extension (instead of .com) or change your regional settings in ‘control panel’ to the UK.

GADGET INSPECTOR
Gadget Inspector investigates the case of:
Winter Warming Gadgets THIS WEEK the Inspector warms the extremities with a selection of gadgets designed to keep out the cold this winter – after all, they’re not as warm as they used to be in sunny Spain! How about a nice self-heating outdoor jacket? Well, the very reasonably priced (€130) Milwaukee M12 should fit the bill perfectly. Sounding more like a gun than a jacket, the Milwaukee will keep you warm outside for up to six hours. The Milwaukee M12 is a cordless water and windresistant jacket that warms the wearer via three carbon fibre heating packs sewn into the lining. It has a built-in control to adjust the heat, and plugs into a mains charging unit at the end of your arctic expedition. Next up we have a cosy pair of €20 heated slippers called the Hot Boots. All you have to do is pop them in the microwave for 90 seconds (take them off first…), then Bobs Your Uncle you’ll have toasty foot wear to beat even the coldest tile floor. Giving off a lavender scent when heated they’ll also do as an effective job as a pair of ‘Odor Eaters’. They are also available in blue for the ladies. But what about that classic situation of being caught in a blizzard and having to reply to that friend request you´ve just received from Farcebook? Fear not, the North Face E-Tip touch-screen compatible gloves will
come to your rescue. The €30 North Face E-Tip Gloves were designed with metal tips on the thumb and index fingers to enable touch-screen operation. The rest of the glove is made mostly from polyester with silicone on the palm for gripping the device. So no need to change your status to hypothermic… Having already had a hot toddy, worn your Hot Boots to keep your feet warm, and sat around all evening in your self-heating jacket – what about that freezing cold divan? Welcome to Hammachers Heated Mattress Pad. This is not a heated blanket, but a pad that is fitted directly on top of the mattress. It has 6 individually-adjustable heating zones fitted to various parts of the pad allowing different amounts of heat for the head, body and legs of each occupant. These are all controlled via a wireless remote, and the pad plugs directly into the mains. The heated mattress pad is made from 100% cotton with a 200 thread count and filled with 7 ounces of soft cushioning, and will automatically turn itself off after 10 hours. Hammacher’s pad is available for twin (€70), queen (€140) and king-size (€200) beds. The Inspector’s Verdict: You´ll be snugger than a bug in a rug, assuming you’re not visiting the United Kingdom Of Great Frostbite this winter - in which case none of the above will be of any use to you.

horoscopes by Kenny Corris
They were there in a drawer. I didn’t go looking for them in the first place, but when I found them, I was hooked, and just had to read some of what was there. Having a clear out is such a slow procedure because we come across things we didn’t know we had, and then, we always hover, wasting time over them making a further decision to either keep them in a drawer, or to hurl them into a rubbish sack. Sometimes we are unsure. This wastes even more time, of course. The diaries weren’t rubbish though, they were five well kept journals of my life as a student in London, way back then. In bold black, with gold embossing slightly faded around the edges these were Biba diaries from the 1970´s. Always my favourite store, I was a follower of Barbara Hulanicki, founder of Biba, since she set up a stall in the Golborne Road market in North Kensington. I braved many a cold winter’s Friday morning sifting through junk and warming myself with endless cups of hot coffee, mainly just to stay awake. Then it was off to Barbara to buy day glo vests and knitted jumpers. The stall became a store in Kensington Church Street, moved to Kensington High Street and then hit the big time taking over the Derry and Tom’s store to become the art deco Mecca as the flagship Biba. I bought a diary every year. And I wrote a page in every day, which is why when I found my diaries I was so intrigued by reading about myself. The first test was to look back 37 years to see what I was doing on the corresponding date. Would I remember that day, where I went and what I did? Yes was the answer. I went to a party at the Barbican, the ballet at Sadler’s Wells and got the night bus home. I remembered the night. I was short of programmes for my practical work at Uni, and was, like everyone at the time, living in a bedsit somewhere in Kensington, and paying an extortionate 8 pounds a week for the privilege. I had several jobs to pay the rent. Harrods on Saturday, where I was an assistant in the Baby shop. A stall in Portobello Road. Children’s drama courses in Golder’s Green. Did readings, demos, and horoscope charts. Even pulled pints in the Student’s Union Bar, and was a waiter in the Great American Disaster hamburger

restaurant. All this was revealed, but how I had the energy I will never know. There were parties, and I went to all of them. I wrote one Saturday that I had been to three parties in one night, only to return to the first one. I went disco roller skating in Heaven, and Ice skating at Richmond Ice Rink. Sunday morning saw me trawling the East End markets to buy stock for the stall, with the odd bagel thrown in for good measure. I went to the theatre when there were cheap seats, the cinema, sang folk songs and served soup for the Salvation Army, and drove everywhere in my convertible Triumph Herald, my pride and joy. Wow. Spirit was with me then as they are now. I guess they were guiding me and preparing me for something, always. I visited the Spiritualist Association of Great Britain, still going strong in Belgrave Square London, to watch Mediums working any spare afternoon. There too I sat in Circle and put my development in the hands of the wonderful Mediums of the time. I watched and I listened and I learned sometimes even the hard way. Spirit has a way of showing you your mistakes, but allowing you to see better ways of doing things, whilst also keeping you safe from harm. My diaries tell of my ups and downs, my sorrows and my joys, each and every holiday in Ibiza or back in the USA. Each page brings fresh evidence of someone I knew, or who needed my help. I knew that I had something to do with my life, and that though it may have been quite a rollercoaster ride by any means, there was and is a reason for everything and anything that I did. Some pages made me cringe, but what I did seemed so right at the time, and looking back I was never guided by fear, and always concerned to do the right thing, though it didn’t always work out that way! The diaries are old and warn. One has a price sticker of 7/6d. One details a Christmas that brought the passing of my dear Mother to the other side. It’s all there, the love, and the hope, and the magic and the achievements of my life. Words may be all that is left right now, but without them we cast away memories best kept close to us, to be re read, and savoured, bringing a smile to another day.

He says that Spiritual feelings are just our own conscious and that God will only accept those who take on an organised religion into their life. He says that Mediums only pervert the word of God. Helen D. Hi Helen. I may be a pervert then in your partner’s eyes. I have also been talking to myself for the past fifty years without knowing it. Your partner does not realise that there are two registered and official religions in the UK. One is Christianity in its many forms, and the other is the Spiritual religion, which is where I come in. As for the word of God, I have never professed to pass on any message from God, though I do think in his infinite wisdom I would have been silenced long ago by crashing thunderbolts if I was doing anything remotely untoward. I hate bigotry in any form, and I accept that your partner has a close connection with God in his mind’s eye, but that as a Christian he should practise one very specific Christian principle he appears to be in grave ignorance over, tolerance, and the love of his fellow men; especially mere sinners like me.

A significant week with a chance to re focus on your immediate wants and needs. Changes on the work front mean extra responsibility and a chance to do things your way for once. With Mercury commencing retrograde mid week, and reflecting on a number of readjustments long overdue, make sure you get your message out loud and clear, and then whatever you do will be an act to follow. Actions with a wise and empowered Sagittarius help you to see things the way that they really are. A time to revise plans, and to make changes, but not for the sake of it; with a view to working closely with your beliefs and desires to form a better future. Look for signs that what you now do is going to be the very best of solutions for all who rely on you and who are watching carefully your next move. You have to go very deep inside yourself to ask why you are so hesitant to accept any help just now. Hesitate and you could be lost because your faith and beliefs are being tested and the solutions sought are closer than you think that they are. Yes, there will be readjustment, but change is the way forward, and secretly this opportunity has been long awaited and should be seen for what it really is. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done. It may not have been exactly what you had in mind, but your expertise has made it what it is, which is the best of all outcomes. When someone crawls back with their tail between their legs you have a choice of how to take this, but luckily no harm was done, and you won’t be taken so lightly in the future if you play this current hand to win! A partial Solar Eclipse is planned for the end of the week, and this is something that brings you the promotion that you have waited for. With your excellent timing and your strong belief in your capabilities it is clear that much could come of all this. Be honest, if you are unsure, because a mistake could send you right back to where you came from, and success is the name of the game right now. Stubbornly you are determined to hang on to past values and this alone will stop you from seeing what you have to and taking the appropriate action when the time comes. You have been warned, but safety is something you weigh up your pro’s and con’s against. Try looking at all this from another direction, see yourself as others see you and take note, because you can. With Venus en route to Capricorn and the rumblings of the movement of retrograde Mercury the boot is on the other foot. However tempted you are to make advances this is not the very best of times for you to make decisions. Leave all that is important until next week when you will have better thought through something you are about to do in anger, since it will have more impact if you stall. Acting in good faith you have uncovered something rather wonderful, and if the offer is as sure as it seems then know that you will get all the backing that you need, so go for it. Seldom do you pause long enough to think, especially as recently you have had to think on your feet. Take your time and see what implications could come, and then go grab a bit of the action before it’s too late. Great Planetary movements centre on you this week as the Cosmos is rewarding, and not before time. Mercury retrogrades bringing many necessary and irritating adjustments, though all for the great good. Then the Partial Eclipse of the Sun, and the New Moon choose your energies to perform with. A great sign of a busy and productive phase, and you are so ready for something to get your teeth into. Stalemate in an action which is taking up a lot of your time right now. When a door closes there is often a better way ahead, but have you really thought everything out? Your priorities right now demand that you start looking, and you will find when the intention is right, and you are aware of the consequences. Somehow you are closer than ever to your desires, but feel further away for some reason. Expect the birth of something new this week as good news travels fast and you have been patiently waiting for some time. As life goes by you are concerned with the immediate future when plans indicate changes on a temporary basis. Have no fear since others respect you for your dedication and your immediately unselfish choices which are keeping everything together very nicely. A challenge is just what you need right now. There is much to bring out from within as you are fully prepared on all levels right now. Something someone has said seems to have had a reverse effect on the natural flow of things. Be assured that you are ready and waiting, and that actions brought about by your loving care and thoughtful deeds will go straight to the hearts of those who really do love you.
If it’s your birthday this week... The Cosmos has made you wait, but time is coming soon when you will break out of that protective shell and show what can be done when faith and destiny intervene to put you up there, just where you so rightly belong right now! Be patient a little longer.

The Palm Doctor
MIGUEL HAS worked with palm trees for 16 years, gaining a vast experience of the trees and earning many technical qualifications relating to the detection and treatment of problems.
The quality of his work - together with trust, honesty and proper treatments plus low cost to the client - is his best visiting card. In recent years, the terrible Red Palm Weevil plague has destroyed thousands of palm trees all over Spain, but there is a solution to save them as new methods are more effective and economical if applied by a professional. In 100% of cases the palm may be saved if diagnosed and treated in time. The symptoms to look for in affected palms are: cut fronds; fronds from the centre of the palm begin to bend to one side; you begin to lose the symmetry of the leaves; there is a strong

Gardening on hillsides by
Clodagh & Dick Handscombe Practical gardeners and authors
WHEN WE wrote ‘Your Garden in Spain – From planning to planting and maintenance’, we included a chapter on ‘Inland Mountainside’ and likewise in Growing Healthy Fruit in Spain and Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain special mention was made of such situations. As a result last Friday we had the honour of talking to courageous readers gardening on the slopes of the now 2,000-house Monte Pego urbanisation at 11am on the 11.11.2011 in the elegant social club lounge. And inevitably we started 11 seconds late! Can those that write in RTN about the occult tell us whether this timing had special significance…? We had an interesting morning discussing important issues such as the following: Coping with the macro-climate of the area and the specific microclimate of specific properties at their current state of development: inevitably until trees and shrubs have been established it is not cost effective to plant weather-sensitive plants… Violent winds both from the north, south and east from the sea do affect gardens. Storms from the sea deposit salt on plants which is best washed off plants by using a hose if no heavy rain is expected. Southern winds can soon dry out plants in shallow soils that have not been improved to increase their moisture holding capacities – the product Terracottem can help considerably with this. High
velocity winter winds from the north although a few degrees above zero centigrade can create wind factor temperatures below zero on the leaves of plants – something easily unnoticed by those that rise late until leaves of succulents and semi tropical plants turn brown and dry up. Depth of soil is often a problem. Terracing, the construction of raised beds and sinking large pots or tubs in the rocks then filled with a rich and moisture-retaining soil/compost mix are practical ways of creating good growing conditions for a wide range of plants. It was gratifying that many attendees had planted or preserved trees to provide valuable summer shade, more effective and enjoyable than umbrella or sail shade, and also developed cosy sheltered spots with good views where summer sun can be enjoyed even on breezy days. Making best use of rain was an important issue. It is important to construct retaining walls around plots to ensure that rain water is retained on a plot and not lost over terrace walls to neighbouring plots or wild hillside and that a network of suitably directed and sloped paths are used to channel water to where most required. Watering was as usual a problem for collocating drought-resistant and thirsty plants, that can lead to some plants dying due to over watering and the attraction of insects and fungi spawns to damp areas and weak forced plants. Interestingly, few attendees were growing any vegetables although as explained in Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain it is easy to grow them in raised beds and in containers. This was very different to the activities of members of the not far away Oasis Gardening Club, based on Rugat. A talk there the previous week indicated that 85% of members enjoyed home-grown vegetables on most days of the year. But many attendees were growing fruit trees although many showed signs of poor plantings. Thanks to those who purchased

Helens Trucks Removals • Storage • Shipping
People will say it’s a small world or wasn’t that a coincidence, well that’s more or less how I got to know Helen and her late partner Colin, of Helens Trucks. By Cliff Roberts We first met around nine years ago while settling our children Jordan & Mackenzie into Spanish school. Helen and Colin were just about to set up Helens Trucks and I was joining Round Town News. When Helen realised that I was now involved with Round Town News she asked if she could place an advert and would only do so if we put her on the crossword page, where she has remained to this day, another strange twist to this tale is that unknown to us Helens sister Kirstie a local translator, actually assisted us when applying for a position in school at the town hall. Time has passed so quickly and both Jordan and Mackenzie have now left school and now Jordan is at college in UK and Mackenzie is working full time in Spain. So here we are approaching the eighth anniversary of Helens Trucks on 1st May 2011. Helens Trucks was initially run from their home here in Torrevieja but as the business grew they found a new warehouse between Catral and Crevillente and luckily and ideally a house directly across from the warehouse. DIFFERENT FROM OTHER REMOVALS COMPANIES Helens Trucks differ in many ways to some of the larger companies. When your household goods are collected and professionally packed into the van,
they will then return to their warehouse and unpack your items, mindful of doing an inventory, to make sure all your items are accounted for and let you know exactly what you have and what you are paying for. You are only charged for the volume that your goods occupy and the same is applicable for storage. Smaller loads from one cubic metre and upwards are being done on a regular basis. SCHEDULE: The van does a return journey every two to three weeks and 7-10 days for smaller loads in their smaller vehicle. Manned by the ever courteous Alan and Robert who like to give that personal touch, they will ensure your items are packed safely. Helen has noticed over the past couple of years that she seems to be moving goods back to the UK whereas it used to be the other way around, how times change! But there has been a small turnaround with people moving back to Spain this year. Due to the current economic climate some people have to vacate their properties in a hurry or may wish to rent their property, Helen would like to inform you that she offers secure containerised storage until you are ready for the transport of your goods, she will also take good care of any personal items you may wish to store safely from a BBQ, to a full household…all at very competitive prices.
Home & Garden
And don’t forget Helen can also offer storage for cars or boats or that larger item, if you require a quote please contact Helen on 965 400616 or 667 815 081 or visit their webpage
at www.helenstrucks.com or email helenstrucks1@yahoo.co.uk. You can find her advert on the crossword page (we can’t get her off there).

The funnel system GOING OUT to lunch or dinner should be a pleasant experience but lately it’s turning out, for you at least, to be increasingly problematic. First you have to consult your diaries or Blackberries to find a suitable and convenient time and date and then find out what type of food you both like or dislike. Then which restaurant are you going to try and who’s paying this time and just how much will it cost? Trying to book a table at a time convenient for you both turns out to be the most inconvenient time for them (if they can be bothered to fit you in at all) then you have to discuss how you are going to get there and back and that’s even before the nightmare for ladies of what to wear. Having finally arrived and been seated one would assume the conversations to be about the décor, the atmosphere or how busy or quiet the restaurant is, but no, the conversation revolves around what to order: what are you having? That sounds nice even though you have no idea what it is you are looking at. You know for sure that whatever you order will never look or taste as good as what someone else in your field of vision has ordered. I have worked in restaurants where an unsold dish one day has been renamed for sale the next until finally sold or binned. Now I’m not suggesting that you should revert back to ‘the good old days’ when no-one asked
or cared what was for dinner - it just got plonked on the table and you either ate it or went without. But I’m afraid for me there is just too much choice. Supermarket trolleys constantly being filled The with food purchases chosen by children who’ve funnel been asked “what do you want for dinner?” and system choices are being made by the packet not the can contents. Expecting a working mum to come home help you from work and then cook a number of different decide your meals for different members of the family and at food different times is not only unfair but unnecessary choice in the home; they should instead be working in a would you like? Would you like it grilled; poached; restaurant where choices are similarly made by the roasted; steamed or hot smoked? Served with a flowery descriptions and not their content. sauce, or without? And finally do you like spices Do I have a solution? Of course I do: just rewrite or not? Up to you if you then insist on having a all the restaurant menus and then start thinking family meeting to decide on a fancy name for it, go like a chef. Instead of beginning your search for ahead. This way you get what you fancy and not your meal with the menu (representing the top just what’s left on the menu you don’t really mind. of a funnel) slowly eliminating items as you read Now I know at least some of you have already through that you don’t like, or like the sound of decided on what takes your fancy without revealing whilst also trying to decipher the complicated what it is. So try it next time you go shopping or flowery restaurant menu jargon until you finish eat in a restaurant even with the kids, take some up at the narrow end of the funnel with what’s of the choice away and start with meat or fish and hopefully just a couple of items which are left, go from there you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to better to start thinking like the chefs do and start decide what to have for dinner and who knows they with one basic ingredient: meat or fish for instance. may all eventually finish up with the same thing, its Then decide whether you like your choice on the bone or off? How hungry are you; how much of it just the way they described it in their heads.

A weekend of international jazz stars I
T´S THE penultimate weekend of the XXXI Cartagena Jazz Festival with all roads leading to Murcia’s port city for a mouth-watering three-day extravaganza featuring some of the best international jazz artists to visit the Costas this year. On Friday 18th it´s the world class Dee Dee Bridgewater ‘To Billie with Love – A Celebration of Lady Day’ supported by one of America´s finest upcoming
Madeleine Peyroux
jazz/R&B singers Lizz Wright. On Saturday 19th it´s the legendary jazz pianist McCoy Tyner with Jose James and Chris Potter ‘A Contemporary Exploration of John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman’ supported by the extraordinary Madeleine Peyroux. Sunday 20th sees the climax with one of the World’s ‘big 3’ of the jazz guitar, Pat Metheny, with his trio featuring bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Bill Stewart. We have previewed Bridgewater, Tyner and Metheny in previous RTN editions: if you missed the articles visit my blog at the web address below. So let´s conclude by telling you about Lizz Wright and Madeleine Peyroux. Peyroux is an American jazz singer, songwriter, and guitarist of French decent who is noted for her vocal style, which has been compared to that of Billie Holiday. She has cited Bessie Smith, Patsy Cline, Édith Piaf, Leonard Cohen, Johnny Mercer, Charlie Chaplin, Serge Gainsbourg, Bob Dylan and Billie
Holiday as influences on her music. Peyroux eschews publicity and keeps a low profile. She has dropped ‘out of sight’ for extended periods of time, as when she spent several years busking after the release of her first album ‘Dreamland’. The album was released in 1996 and gained widespread attention. Time magazine called it “…the most exciting, involving vocal performance by a new singer this year.” Her latest album ‘Standing On The Rooftop’ was released earlier this year. Wright was born in the small town of Hahira in the US state of Georgia; one of three children and the daughter of a minister and the musical director of their Church. She started singing gospel music and playing piano in church as a child, and also became interested in jazz and blues. She attended Houston County High School, where she was heavily involved in choral singing, receiving the National Choral Award. Wright joined the Atlanta-based vocal quartet ‘In The Spirit’ in 2000, which
Lizz Wright
soon achieved critical acclaim, and in 2002 she signed a recording contact with Verve Records, where her musical compositions and vocal style led her to be compared to Norah Jones. Her first album, ‘Salt’, was released in 2003 and reached number two on the Billboard Top Contemporary Jazz chart. Her next release in June 2005, ‘Dreaming Wide Awake’ incorporated folk music to her musical blend, and reached number one on the Top Contemporary Jazz chart. On ‘The Fellowship’ released in 2010, she continues her genre-defying journey with a nod to her roots in gospel on the one hand and her gospel of eclecticism on the other.

AND SO enters the latest reality show pile of poop ‘I’m a Celebrity … get me out of Here’, which from now on by the way will be called ‘I am not a Celebrity … and get me the off button’ … yet another cartload of people who are a mix of individuals who were once celebs and sadly for them are no more, and clowns like Mark Wright who has blagged his way onto mainstream TV on the back of a glistening set of muscles and gleaming white teeth, which apparently qualifies him to be a ‘celebrity’. Just in case you don’t know, Mark Wright was previously part of an earlier pile of poop ‘The Only Way is Essex’ and this is where we pick up the story. Marky-boy has been quoted as saying: “I was very upset when Sam Faiers publicly dumped me on the show and I’ve joined ‘I’m a celebrity … to get over it.” No, no Mark, that’s not what you’re doing, my son, you’re at the blag again, getting your face on the telly so we can all find out how talented you are.” Leaving ‘T.O.W.I.E.’ was very upsetting, Mark repeated, “...but it’s the thing that put me on the map” he cheerfully added … (and what map might that be I wonder…) “the jungle will be good for my future,” he then said with gusto… Talking of maps and jungles, what would be good for us long-suffering viewers of TV, Mark, is that you lose your map when you are in the jungle and end up spending some time on your own, thinking through what a load of old crapola you talk...
Chips ‘n books Where’s Daddy I was a huge fan of French and Saunders when they first appeared on TV in the 80s and they have kept up a very high standard of comedy over the last 20 odd years both when they occasionally work together and also on their individual projects. But it is solely in the direction of Dawn French I am going today. I said I was a huge fan and the word ‘huge’ is what this item is all about, as it’s been quite scary watching how big Dawn has become. But quite spectacularly, the heroine of our story appeared at the Galaxy Book Awards in London last week looking like she and lettuce had become best buddies. “I cut down on the chocolate and swapped chips for salad” Dawn said in an interview with Woman magazine … she was at the bash to collect the Award for her latest book ´A Little bit Marvellous´ voted Fiction Book of the Year, so lets hope she didn’t celebrate with half a dozen bacon sarnies.

A few days ago I was browsing through this final story of the week thinking how dull it all was as the main player was Hugh Grant - the guy who gave us just one level of acting with his dithering bumbling fool of an Englishman; a character that earned the man mountains and mountains of dosh I might add. What caught my eye about the tale was that he and his Chinese girlfriend Tingian Hong had recently had a baby and failed to register the child within the 42 day time limit. The yawn factor then picked up again with a whole load of legal jargon should they not make the
registration and I was thinking I need to recommend the story to insomnia suffers. Then I found what I was looking for right at the bottom. Baby Jessica was born in Portland Hospital in London on 26th September and father Hugh Grant went there for just half an hour then left as he had a plane to catch to go to Scotland to play golf. I’ve always believed that Hugh Grant was not made of the right stuff and now I have full confirmation … (Stumbling) “… em … eh … ah … baby … right … um … girl … oh … I see … anyway … em … must dash … have a … um … bye …”

Everyday Man WHEN I started writing for a living back in the 70s, publishers spoke of two kinds of covers for the writer’s work. The usual was paperback –cheaper to produce and therefore cheaper off the shelf – and hardback: more costly Book to buy and prestigious for the Review by writer but little else. Hardbacks as a rule, believe me, do not sell well unless ghost-written for a copy@dannyjpcollins.com celebrity who wouldn’t know a plot if it bit her on the rear (note I say ‘her’ – they’re usually female). But these days we have a new category that falls nicely between the two; I’ll call it plastiback. All that just to tell you that the book I’m reviewing this week has a durable cover and will last. That’s just as well because it’s the type of book I like to keep on the shelf for an occasional flip through. Travels of an Everyday Man is just what it says – multiple journeys from Britain’s West Country to Europe and the Far East with the writer as both host and guide. The format’s not new but such books rely on crisp, descriptive prose, a good eye for detail, and intrinsic humour. Author Ferguson Elliot provides all three and the result is a pleasant armchair

The laws about UK licences
Dear Brian (by phone): I have just been stopped by our local police here in Javier and fined for a parking offence (they say!) While I was stopped, they checked my documents and told me that I by should have a Spanish Driving Licence (I have a UK one that is okay until 2014.) Why is it that the Brian Deller police do not know the laws about the UK licences being legal here?
Author of Motoring in Spain
Dear Stephen - many of the local authorities do not know the laws regarding foreign residents and in fact I have visited a local Spanish lawyer, last week who specialises in serving British expats here to obtain a copy of the Ley 62, 2006, which I am told specifies the procedures to be taken, especially by the reconcimientos (clinics) when testing residents with legal foreign driving licences. The lawyer was amazed as I related a lot he did not know, so why should a police constable at the local pueblo know more? But the Guardia Civil in my experience are much more knowledgeable. I have suggested this before regarding the Spanish
licence change - go to my website at www.spainvia. com/drivelicenceletteradsl.htm, print out a few copies and give one to the ‘jefe’ at the policia local station and watch his jaw drop as he reads it. Also see the Foreigners Department at the local Ayuntamiento and ask them to phone the police and explain the letter which is from the Ministerio del Interior in March 2005 explaining that foreign EU driving licences are legal as long as the holder obeys the same rules as Spanish drivers have to - one being the mandatory periodical medicals as explained in Para 3 in the letter (which is of course, in Spanish).
As soon as I have the Ley 62/2006, I intend to write a letter in Spanish that all expats can download from my website, to carry so that when they take a medical, they are given the same number of years as a Spanish driver. This will save expats with foreign licences from the problem of being granted only three months validity on the issued medical certificate. More on this anon... Of course all readers could write/contact their local British Consulate with this problem and request they solve it… Blessed rain is here again so make sure those tyres are in good condition and at the right pressures. Be safe out there.
There is much more detailed information on all motoring subjects in my book. Brian Juan (John) Deller, Malaga, author, ‘Motoring in Spain’ www.spainvia.com. “On yer bike!” say Alicante police
ALICANTE POLICE officers Miguel Navarro Alcarez and his brother Luis are in charge of special operations at the ‘parque infantil de tráfico’ (kids’ traffic playground) in the city in a project aimed at getting kids out on their bikes, encouraging independence and safety and also helping obese children to shed the pounds. The highly successful campaign started in 2003 at the municipal facilities at Fernando Madroñal. And so far this year an impressive 4,790 students from 88 schools have passed through the programme. The police say emphasis is placed on the importance of wearing a safety helmet and reflective clothing; road safety, including how to ride a bike safely near tram lines; respect for pedestrians; confident attitudes in the event of accidents; health benefits and most importantly, having as much fun as possible. Councilman Juan Seva and the local police chief, Jose Maria Conesa, visited the premises this week, both agreeing that “road education is a valuable part of children’s development.”

Nick says no Dennis Jordan NORTH REGION
JUST 24 hours after the Martin Johnson resignation press conference, where Johnson, the now former England rugby manager, acted with grace and dignity and Rob Andrew did his best Sepp Blatter impression (more on that later) came the depressing news that Nick Mallett had ruled himself out of applying for the job. English born Mallett, a former Oxford blue, record breaking coach of South Africa and inspirational coach of Italy had stated some time ago that he wouldn’t fancy a job within the current set up of the RFU and he’s been true to his word. Indeed, he’d also previously said that he had concerns on whether he would have to answer to a performance director rather than a chief executive: and therein lies the problem. How many more potential and well qualified candidates will decide not to throw their hats into the ring because of the way that the RFU is structured and who they might have to report to? As it happens, without all the current RFU in-fighting and with the correct coaches in place (and Johnson never had those) I don’t think that managing the England rugby team should be all that difficult. You don’t need a hammer to crack a walnut, but with the Six Nations Championship only a few short months away, a Mallett would have been quite useful. WALKER HITS THE GROUND RUNNING Through the qualification matches for Euro 2012, only Liechtenstein passed the ball back to its goalkeeper more than England. It’s something football fans of my age are used to seeing from English defenders. The alternative is equally depressing; a succession of square passes before a lump down field more in hope than in anticipation. However, against Sweden in midweek, England at least tried a different tack from time to time. With the excellent Kyle Walker injecting some much needed pace and invention, England actually played the ball out of defence on numerous occasions, creating a number of exciting attacking opportunities into the bargain. Leighton Baines and Gary Cahill weren’t too shabby either in what was a new look back four. I’m rather hoping that Capello sticks with it. SEPTIC SEPP And so wearily, we turn to the subject of Sepp Blatter. I say wearily because apart from his incredibly wellrewarded staff and a number of financially supported football associations around the world, there cannot be anyone in the game who thinks he should still be President of FIFA. He remains though, despite recent comments that racism isn’t a problem in football and that any racist abuse on the pitch should be settled by a handshake between the players involved. Over the years, Blatter has survived many attempts to oust him by various FAs, the English press and political opponents alike. Perhaps now it’s the turn of Richard Attenborough from Jurassic Park to give it a go. He is, after all, quite well versed in dealing with dinosaurs…

DRESS CODES vary in strictness depending on the policies Golf Course RTN Price Comments of the golf course that you are playing. Alenda €45 Single Green fee (Buggy 12€) A good indicator of whether there is a dress code is the price of the course you plan to play. Alicante Golf €52 Single Green fee inc Buggy The higher the greens fees, the more likely there is to be Bonalba €41 Single Green fee (Buggy 10€) a dress code for golfers. But most upscale courses require Don Cayo €44 Single Green fee (Buggy 14€) collared shirts and have a no-denim rule. We know, a collar on a shirt doesn’t sound like much, but El Plantio €46 Single Green fee (Buggy 12€) if the course requires collars and you show up in a t-shirt, Font del Llop €40 Single Green fee (Buggy 10€) you’ll either be buying a collared shirt in the pro shop or Villaitana Par 62 €38 Single Green fee inc Buggy heading home. As for golf shoes: most golf courses have outlawed metal Villa Aitana Par 72 €44 Single Green fee (Buggy 15€) spikes. If you wear a shirt with a collar and tailored shorts or trousers, you’ll meet the dress code of 95% of courses, here in Spain and in the UK.
THE WINTER low season is now with us again once more with a number of deals kicking in from 16the November 2011 and with many lasting until the end of February 2012 – happy days! The courses are still quite busy but this will reduce in the next few months until a bad English winter will make many a disillusioned golfer head to the Spanish sun once more. This is a good time for the resident golfer to top up his ‘golf account’ having missed out on golf during the high season period to save a few pennies. The best early winter deals are at Las Colinas where you can have 2 players and 1 buggy for only 99€ (12pm-1pm) and for only 76€ from 1.12pm onwards and La Peraleja where the already excellent prices have been reduced further and you can have 4 players and 2 buggies for only 132€.
AT THE European Access Tour event at La Manga this morning there are 84 aspiring athletes here hoping to win their cards for the LET for next season. I have to say some of the ball-striking is a joy to watch. I had a chat with Carlota Ciganda from Pamplona who has an impressive CV including a PAC 10 Championship win whilst at Arizona State. Carlota will be tee-ing up for an LPGA card at the start of December in Florida and is definitely one to watch. With the end of the first part of the peak season in sight, there are a number of offers through November and December at our courses.

Long or Short? Noel’s world of golf By Noel Eastwell Teaching Professional Campo de Golf El Plantio 639 730 891
THE MAJORITY of golfers will want to reduce their handicaps throughout their careers. They pride themselves on being as good as they can be every time they go out to play our sport. To this end they will purchase the latest equipment almost before it is released with the hope that this will provide the answer to all their hopes. In my experience they would be much better off if they purchased less equipment but invested in equipment that actually fitted them and their golf swings. Every single one of us is a different size and shape yet believe we can all use ‘standard’ golf clubs that are made by the big name companies who throw millions at tour players all over the World. You can bet your house that none of the tour players are given equipment that has not been fitted specifically for them, yet these same manufacturers expect those passionate about their games to purchase clubs at crazily expensive prices off the shelf of a retail outlet just because they are the latest model. It is now time for a change in the way golf club manufacturers supply us with clubs. It is high time we were able to buy equipment that is made-to-measure for us far more easily. The difference when you have clubs that are fitted correctly will reduce your scores considerably and help you enjoy your chosen sport much better. Imagine if you coupled having madeto-measure clubs with a few lessons with a qualified teaching professional and just imagine the difference you could make to your game. We are coming up to the time of the year when presents are being bought for Christmas and golf clubs will be a fair percentage of what is bought. Maybe you could consider having clubs custom-made
if you are in the market for a new set and see the difference it will make to your game. To have clubs custom-made is the way forward manufactures know this and are appointing people who are qualified to perform this service so go along and have a look at what is on offer. You may be surprised, and in most cases the price is the same as off the shelf clubs that will not do the best for you. WIN A ROUND OF GOLF FOR 2 INCLUDING BUGGY AT THE BEAUTIFUL EL PLANTIO RESORT IN ALICANTE To enter this competition, simply answer the question below correctly. Every correct answer will be entered into a draw at the end of the month and the winner of this fantastic prize worth over 180€ will be picked at random at the end of each month. Send your entries by email to golf@roundtownnews.com. The decision of the editor of RTN will be final in making the winning selection. QUESTION FOR 18TH NOVEMBER 2011 Where are the headquarters of Real Federacion Española de Golf? A. Barcelona B. Valencia C. Madrid All answers must be received no later than 5pm on 30th November 2011 to be entered into November’s draw, to be made on 30th November. The winner will be announced in RTN on 2nd December 2011. Frustrating weekend for ITV Orihuela RFC THE WEEKEND started with the Juveniles playing against their counterparts from Albacete, starting off brightly, putting pressure on the visitor’s line from the word go, but could not make it count. It was Albacete who put the first points on the board with a penalty from their first and only visit of the first half and that was how it finished. The second half continued with all the pressure coming from the home team, but just unable to make it count, and again with about their third time in the Orihuela’s half they made it count putting them 8-0 up. Eventually the pressure paid off with Gabriel scoring a well-deserved try converted by Tirso. The final whistle gave Albacete a 8-7 win: a hard lesson learned by the Juveniles.
The seniors failed to bounce back from two disappointing weeks, starting an even game with ITV Orihuela RFC keeping Albacete pegged in their own half: some very good defence kept the home team at bay, with the only score early on a long-range penalty by Alvaro. Both defences defending for their lives, a couple of poor tackling attempts let in the visitors for two tries, giving them a 17-3 half-time lead.
FC Torrevieja news TORRY KEPT their unbeaten home record after a 1-1 draw with Castellon with Prior scoring for Torry. Torry finished the match with nine players after the clown with the whistle spoilt the spectacle by redcarding Petu and Vidal. Torry are away at struggling AT Saguntino tomorrow which won’t be easy as they will be without five key players.
The second half was much as the first, with ITV Orihuela RFC more adventurous, wanting to run it instead of taking the

For further details ring Alan Roscoe 968 570 876 or email: anglerstogether@hotmail.co.uk THIS WEEK was the 6th round of the Winter Championship. The venue was the Rio Segura at Murcia, as it has now settled down. In saying that it had settled, there is still a lot of activity on the far bank with the contractors joining up the large pipe which we believe will be used for the diverted water. Will keep you informed as to progress. Anyway, the fishing on the day was hard. And the pegging is becoming increasingly more difficult due to the amount of shallow water pegs. However, there were still some good weights: TOP ANGLERS ON THE DAY 1st Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare fishing the pole using bread with 30.56 kilos 2nd Stan (The Man) Roberts fishing the pole using maggot and corn with 24.02 kilos 3rd Ian (Irish Wizard) Dalzell fishing the pole using pellet with 15.90 kilos After 6 matches the top 3 are as follows: 1st Dave Hutchinson 30 pts 2nd Terry Screen 37 pts 3rd Dave Hoare 49pts There are still 5 matches to go so all still to fish for. PLEASE NOTE The club at present does have some vacancies and if you are interested in joining please contact Derek Swann on 96 672 9293 or 667 407 026.
penalty points, which seemed to have paid off with Danny for the second week running from his own 22, slicing through the visitors’ defence like a hot knife through butter. Again some poor tackling let Albacete in for one more try: full time score 22-8 to Albacete. This was a far better game in all areas for ITV Orihuela RFC and was closer than the score reflects: let’s hope that we can continue this for the rest of the season. The next game for ITV Orihuela RFC is in two weeks’ time. The club trains Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at the Miguel Hernandez University for the juveniles and seniors starting at 8.30pm: juniors are on Tuesday and Thursday at 6.15pm. New players are always welcome no matter what age or skill level. For more information on the Club, contact Garry on 692 767 242: for the juniors contact Oscar on 600 871 606 (Spanish).

ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS supplied by Terry Screen This week’s 8th round of the winter league was fished on the River Segura at the Eden Stretch: it was a good turnout considering the mornings are getting a lot cooler. The water was high until about an hour into the match, when the sluice gates into the 8ft drain were opened, and the water raced through and dropped the level at least a foot, bringing all sorts of debris with it. It still fished quite well with three double figure weights 1st Stan (The Man) Roberts with 12.780kg fishing pole and maggot 2nd Bill (The Master) Reade with 12.620kg fishing floating bread 3rd Ian (The Irish Wizard) Dalzell with 12.580kg on the
pole and maggot I received an interesting email this week regarding the forth coming work to be carried out on the Embalse de Ojos (i.e. Blanca): it seems that they are going to drain it so only a gulley remains for the river - then they will dredge it all using the material to build an embankment all around the lake. This will then be used for recreational purposes with boating, sailing and fishing. As always we await the outcome... These and all other details are available from our web site www.abbeyangling.com or from the Match Secretary Terry Screen on 96 532 8368 Anglers Together WE HAVE been having a lot of enquiries about licenses from anglers who are passing the ‘magic age of 65’ and therefore pensioners! Licenses are still required and are free providing you have a Spanish ‘Pensionista’ card, otherwise you will have to pay the normal fees. Licenses are available from either Town Halls or the Caja Rural Bank if in Valencia region. In Murcia you will also require insurance. Make sure you take photocopies of all relevant documents to obtain your license, i.e. passport photopage, NIE and insurance. Anglers Together was formed to introduce and encourage anglers of all abilities to meet up and get together to fish, either sea or freshwater. Firm friendships have been formed during the time the group has been active and information on fishing venues and licenses required are available at the meetings or by regular emailed newsletters. Meetings are held in two locations each month. Anyone with an interest in fishing (sea or freshwater) is welcome to come along to a meeting to see what we’re about. The next meetings are: Friday 9th December at 12pm at Mary’s Bar, Campoverde (near Pilar de la Horadada) and also Saturday 10th December at 12pm at The New Royal Bar and Restaurant at El Alamillo, opposite the seafront between Isla Plana and Puerto de Mazarron.
