Mayor asks for intervention

by louise clarke THE MAYOR of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, has announced this week that more than 850,000€ will be invested on works to prevent similar severe flooding to that which besieged the city last month. The works include a more effective drainage system, especially in the areas near Carrefour, the Torettas and the main CV-905; all of which were severely affected by flooding during the most recent downpour on 20th March. The Mayor chaired a meeting of the working group which has been devised to carry out urgent and necessary works the whole storm system in the city of Torrevieja, on Wednesday morning. The group also discussed short and medium term plans in order to prevent a similar incident to the one experienced just over three weeks ago.

The Mayor was accompanied by amongst others, the Councillor for Town Planning and Environment, Francisco Moreno, the Director-Curator of the Wetlands of Southern Alicante, Concepción Torres, the Managing Director of AGAMED, Pelayo Mellado and the Head of Services and Infrastructure in Torrevieja, Francisco Cruz. The Mayor told RTN: “The main objective of this working group is to evaluate and plan all the mediumterm priority projects and stormwater plans for the city of Torrevieja, which is intended to resolve this problem in a definitive way.” The Mayor announced that during the month of May, the storm water network of the municipality will undertake renovation by the AGAMED company at a cost of 852,000€. MASTERPLAN These works will include specific areas including those in the vicinity of the CV-905; an area where there is traditionally a large accumulation of water during and after heavy rain storms.
