Speeding growth for AVE

OFFICIAL STATISTICS published by the Ministry of Economic Development states that high speed lines and long distance trains along the east-Mediterranean corridor, which connects Madrid with different Castilian cities and eastern coast, lost 28.2% of travellers during the first nine months of the year, from 4.47 million in the same period of 2012 to 3.21 million in the current year while the Alicante route has proved to be one of the most popular.

The official data verifies the commitment and positive uptake by the public and especially the business community to the newest high-speed route operated by the Valencian department of Renfe. With new routes planned into Murcia and other zones, coastal towns such as Torrevieja are presently looking at possible ways to connect to the AVE line, which takes just over two and half hours to transport passengers between the capital and Alicante.

The Bisiquión tour of Torrevieja

More than 200 cyclists of all ages, abilities and models of bike, took parting Sunday’s ‘Bisiquión’

by Keith Nicol TWICE EACH year, in June and December, hundreds of cyclists of all ages and abilities bring out their bikes for a special tour around the City of Salt. In the same week that work began on the 75 km of new bicycle lanes around the city, the holiday fiestas concluded with the usual bike tour of the city organised by the Neighbourhood Acequión on Sunday December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculada.

This year marked the tenth running of the ‘Bisiquión’ with more than 200 cyclists braving the cold morning air to pedal around ten

miles of the city’s main streets from Urbano Arregui, Los Montesinos, Avda Doctor Desiderio Rodriguez and Gregorio Marañón, along the coast to Avenida de Baleares and Diego Ramirez, returning to the starting point 90 minutes later to enjoy a beverage and a sandwich plus gifts for all the children.

Members of local cycling clubs also expressed their thanks to the Policia Local for helping patrol the event and keep the roads safe for the run and noted that the new bike lanes will help promote cycling in Torrevieja, leading to a healthier lifestyle, cleaner air quality and easy parking for bikes, especially in the city centre.

Former mayor’s sentence suspended

PEDRO ANGEL Hernandez Mateo, the former Mayor of Torrevieja for more than two decades, has temporarily had his prison sentence suspended. The Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV) agreed to suspend the execution of the sentence of three years imprisonment until such time as the central government resolves the issue of clemency.

The High Court, Civil Court and the Criminal Court have taken this decision after receiving a favourable report from the prosecutor, as they take the length of the sentence and the fact that the former mayor has paid both the fine in compensation and legal costs into consideration. In addition, the TSJCV urges the Ministry of Justice to process the file for clemency; urgently.

Mateo Hernandez was sentenced to three years in prison and seven of disqualification for trespass and forgery in the award of municipal waste collection in 2004. According to the judgment, the Mayor manipulated the procurement process through a complex system for a single purpose: to award the contract, valued at 97.8 million euros, to a chosen contractor.

New charity shop for Reach Out

AT 10.30 AM sharp on Thursday, Torrevieja’s homeless support charity Reach Out opened the doors to their second charity shop in the city. The new shop, located on calle Doña Sinforosa, 8, Acequión was officially jointly opened by the cutting of a festive ribbon by Councillor for Social Services Tomas Ballester and Councillor for Foreign Residents Rosario Martinez Chazarra accompanied by Jean Paul Mulero the new Director of the OARI and charity founder Karolina Leonard.

Long time supporters of the charity Lorraine and David Whitney, ably helped by local volunteers, will manage the new shop. Many of you may know David and Lorraine from their fund raising work and from the Actors Studio or their work in the original charity shop located at calle Bella Antonia,1, close to the Friday Market and Plaza Havana in Torrevieja.

The new shop is bright and airy and although compact is well laid out and offers some great buys, which may well be worth looking at, in the run up to Christmas. The shop is open on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10.00am until 2.00pm. David said; “Reach Out are always looking for new

Their doors are open Christmas day, offering a special lunch and they are busy preparing hampers with clothes, gloves, scarves, food and toys for families with the 82 children that they cater to, to help make this Christmas that little bit more special.

Film school in the City of Light close

By Keith Nicol THE LIGHTS continue to dim on Alicante’s film school in the City of Light. Film is close to joining the long line of educational cuts of the Generalitat Valenciana as the economic situation in the autonomy starts to reach an all time low.

Although the department of education say they will ensure that they will continue offering some sort of film degree in the coming years, today’s students view it differently. “They pretend that everything is absolutely normal but are sending students back home,” said Mario Nunez, a spokesman for the 15 students who have been unable to continue their studies due to a “lack of guarantees.”

The Centre for Study at the City of Light abruptly suspended their private qualifications and postgraduate courses, as these are dependent on the backing of the Board of the City of Light, which is formed mainly by the Government, and other entities such as the City of Alicante, Alicante workers union COEPA and the authors’ society SGAE. The only classes that are being taught in what was looked to be the most advanced studio design and set to be the European Hollywood, are graduate and undergraduate Communication courses, through the University Miguel Hernández (UMH) in Elche.

On 25th November, the students of the film school told the centre’s director, José Antonio Escrivá, of their distrust of the second year in studying Film Direction and Editing, courses that should have started in September. They are demanding the refund of tuition for the first year, close to 6,000 euros, as they are unable to complete the second year of studies. Núñez said “I wonder what they want to do with the centre: It seems that either they close it or sell it.”

Meanwhile teachers and lecturers have not had their contracts renewed and those waiting to start their second year of studies are left in limbo.

Alimentos Solidarios 900 meals weekly

ALIMENTOS SOLIDARIOS opened their doors to members from the Royal Naval Association on Monday, for what has become an annual pilgrimage for the RNA each December.

Town Hall and we have a long waiting list. This week, they served an average of 450 meals each day and are busy preparing special hampers for every one of their recipients, so that they have something to take home and cook on Christmas day.

THANKS TO the generosity of members, they were able to provide Alimentos Solidarios, Torrevieja’s official ‘food bank’ with trolleys full of food, plus a cheque for 250 euros for their cause.

Manager and chief chef of Alimentos Solidarios is Antonio Sanchez and after thanking the RNA for their continued support he said that in 2013 they served around 30,000 menus!

Antonio said; “We know exactly how many meals we serve.

We have it all perfectly recorded. It is work, throughout the year, which generates a lot of work for our 80 volunteers: which includes cooking, distribution, collection, kitchen, warehouse and record keeping. We usually ask for non-perishable food such as vegetables, pasta or rice for the Food Bank, but we always have to buy some ingredients or fresh food, such as meat, chicken or fish, through the grant we have or with the financial contributions and donations. Obviously, we will not buy steak but we can buy chicken or pork.”

Some of the other items they purchase, include yogurt and they try and give out quantities of some important items such as milk, fruit or bread, which, so that especially at the weekends, when they are closed, recipients can prepare at home, Alimentos Solidarios is open all year, Monday through Friday except National and special holidays.

Representatives of the RNA with volunteers from Alimentos Solidarios Antonio added; “We serve about 1,250 meals a week who this week prepared an average of 250 meals every day to 200 or more families that are registered with the

Easyriders’ Toy Run on Sunday The annual Santa Bikers Toy Run is always a popular event

by Keith Nicol THIS SUNDAY, December 15th offers yet another event, this time for local bikers and those who wish to support Costa Blanca children’s charities.

This fun motor cycle event has grown in popularity over the years and attracts hundreds of riders, featuring all kinds of bikes from 60’s Mod style scooters to café racers and Harley Davidson’s, with all the riders dressed in Santa style as they ride to Alicante to distribute toys to fifty children in need.

These children come from poor or under privileged families who otherwise would do without over the Christmas period. The event is organised by the Easyriders from Torrevieja and Alicante region, who have taken over the run due to the decline of the Harley Davison

chapter of Santa Fez, who previously ran the event. The Easy Rider American Bikers Bar & Restaurant adopted the event and thanks to the backing of the Alicante Town Hal, their social department and the participation of the National Police, the event is going ahead on Sunday.

The run already features six American Trucks, between 250 and 300 bikers, all with their Santa suits, who will ride around all the major streets of Alicante, while back at the Bar the councillor for social services will receive the gifts and a concert will be performed by Jaime Norabuena.

Torrevieja’s Christmas story ON WEDNESDAY, a packed Torrevieja Christian Fellowship welcomed more than 300 people to a United Carol Service featuring the ‘Crescendo International Choir’ and ‘Just Brass’ Band as the English Speaking Churches of Torrevieja and surrounding area again united to celebrate the Christmas Story. Along with the signing of traditional carols, a collection was taken during the event with all profits going to APANEE Children’s Charity with a drop off point available for anyone who wished to leave food items or warm clothing for distribution to the homeless and hungry of Torrevieja via ‘Reach Out’ Charity. Continuing the festive spirit, TCF present their own Carol Service this Sunday, 15th December 2013 at 10.30am. Torrevieja Christian Fellowship (TCF) is located on Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas 68, (opposite Maxi Dia) and everyone, of all faiths or none, is welcome to attend. Crime in Alicante drops below National average

THE CRIME rate in the province of Alicante dropped below the National average for the first time and should remain there through the end of 2013. Data released last week show that crime fell by 7%, a “spectacular drop” according to the Director General of Police, Ignacio Cosidó because it is double what has been experienced, in terms of improvement, throughout the whole of Spain.

Among the reasons for the improvement of data in Alicante, he pointed to greater effectiveness in solving crimes within the domain of the National Police, which has improved 1.3 percent, a figure well above the national average.

Cosidó added; “so far this year we have dismantled over 250 criminal organizations in Alicante, of which 43 are considered ‘serious’ crime. Alicante has long been a paradise for foreign criminals but we are fighting back.”

As of the end of November, crime in the province accounted for 5% of the national total.

Continued from front page Nationally, through September, Renfe carried a total of 19.03 million passengers on its trains and long-distance AVE, representing an increase of 12.1% over the same period last year. The increase is related in part to new tariffs that came into effect in February 2013, involving an average 11% reduction in the price of all tickets, plus discounts that could be as high as 70% when a booking was made well in advance.

If the AVE and long distance lines maintain this volume of users for the remainder of the operating year, they will end 2013 with a record high rating, exceeding 25 million passengers.

The Councillor for Infrastructure, Isabel Bonig, said that the Mediterranean rail corridor is a major positive for the Region while stressing; “meeting deadlines on our new lines enables companies to plan their commercial strategies and rely on rail travel.” She insisted that “the basic infrastructure for constructing new lines for both Valencia and the rest of Spain will run on schedule, with most of the planned work completed in 2015. In addition, the restructuring of the circulation times of the lines will be improved.

For example, the trip from Valencia to Barcelona is reduced to two hours and twenty minutes while the connection from Alicante will only be one hour.”

The event takes place in Plaza de la Consitución in front of the main Inmaculada Church and one and all, no matter what nationality, will be made most welcome. Over the years, the square has accommodated more than 5,000 songsters, all in full voice singing traditional carols.

Tonight members of various local choral groups, The Rascals and many others, will be accompanied by the Phoenix Concert Band under the baton of Julie Schofield, the band’s current Musical Director, with your MC for the evening being the one and

only, Bill Singleton.

The Christmas Carols are mostly in English but with a few in Spanish. Song sheets will be available and a collection will be made on behalf of local charity. Last year, well over three thousand people gathered to enjoy this typical Christmas celebration, so make sure you arrive there early!

To warm you up, TKO Radio 91.9 fm will be playing the sounds of popular Christmas music from 5.00pm until 6.00pm and the Nativity is open for your enjoyment. Mayor Eduardo Dolon and members of the Council, along with staff from the office of Foreign Residents, will also be present and in full voice. So don your Santa hat, woolly gloves and scarf and make your way to downtown Torrevieja and join in a local Christmas tradition.

Hotel occupation up HOTELS ON the Costa Blanca recorded an occupancy rate close to 42 percent for November 2013, representing an increase of 12.5 points over 2012.

According to figures provided by Hosbec, the Hotel Association, 22% of the hotel rooms on the Costa Blanca, not including Benidorm, are typically closed during the low season, with 40% of these due to renovations. Taking into account total results including Benidorm, the occupancy growth seen in November improved by 14.5 points to 69.3%.

Characteristically one of the slowest periods of the year, the second half of November also showed improved figures from the same period last year, increasing from 27.2% of beds occupied in 2012, to 35.7%.

During the second half of the month, the best result recorded was in Finestrat, with 52.6% occupancy, followed by Alfas del Pi

with 43.7% and with 37%: Altea. Hotels in Calpe obtained a 25.8% occupancy and the Alicante South percentage touched a positive 44%. During this period, the majority of visitors were Spanish tourists, accounting for 58.9% of all overnight stays.

Among the foreigners, the most numerous were the British, representing 21.1% of all tourists, ahead of those from the Nordic countries with 10.9%, followed by German, Russian, Belgian, Dutch and visiors from the Far East.

By category, the most popular hotels were those with three stars, who sold 44.8% of their beds. Basic Two Star Hotels showed an occupancy rate of 38.4%, with four-star at 29.9% and five stars 18.9%. The occupancy forecast for the first half of December for Costa Blanca Hotels, with the exception of Benidorm, is currently 29.2%. With respect to the Benidorm campsite, in November occupancy improved by 9.6% over last year to reach 73.6%.

Crisis drug club

DRUG DEALERS peddling an ‘anti-crisis package’ to youngsters at 2€ a time have been arrested in Alicante by police after an undercover investigation. Operating near a school in the north of the city, the man and woman – aged 25 and 28 – sold the ingredients of a ‘joint’; tobacco, a cigarette, cigarette paper, and a amount of cannabis to schoolchildren. And in a search of an apartment, just yards from the playground, detectives discovered 200g of marijuana, 200g of hashish, 272€ in cash, and items used in the illicit trade.

The Russians are still coming

By Keith Nicol SPAIN IS the fourth most popular holiday destination for Russian tourists, according to data released by the Russian Federation Federal Agency for Tourism (Rosturizm) for the first 9 months of 2013. Through September 2013, outbound travel from Russians increased by 23% to $14.8 million.

The most popular destinations from January to September were Turkey with 2.7 million, up 20%, Egypt 1.4 million, Greece 1.1 million, Spain with 887,100, China 787.200, a drop of 20%, Finland 787,100, Thailand 683,000, Germany 638,100 and Italy with 605,500.

A total of 42.583.312 Russian tourists travelled abroad during this period, up 14% compared to last year, when 37.299.930 Russian tourists travelled in 2012.

No heating hand-outs THOSE TAXES paid by people whilst they lived here were used to improve this country, not put to one side in a savings account to be drawn when it got cold.

This country has experienced a gigantic leap in gas and electric prices: we are all struggling to pay our bills. Some do without food to keep warm and thousands of our elderly are dying from hypothermia.

We should be looking after them more, not giving to people who didn’t want to stay.

Lots of people have put in central heating, double glazing, etc.

Drinking laws in Spain and the UK

to help prevent getting cold in winter - perhaps if they had done the same it would help. We have seen in the last few years a massive influx of people from Euro zones come to live here, some living on benefits they have not contributed to; availing themselves of a health service they also have not contributed to.

This all takes extra cash that this country can ill afford to give to all and sundry.

So if you don’t live here don’t expect hand-outs for heating.

JACK WARNER is yet another person who writes about the law in Spain and UK, without sufficient knowledge. He complained about a father who allowed his 14 year old son to drink a beer. In Spain it is an offence to sell alcohol to a person under 18 (in certain circumstances under 16) however, there is no law which says how old a person must be to consume alcohol in a private place. So, at home no age limit. In the UK: it is an offence to give alcohol to a child under 5 except on medical advice. One must be 18 to purchase alcohol, but a person under 18 can legally consume it in a public place. In a public house a 16 year old can consume beer or cider with a meal, if it is purchased by a person over 18. Julian Ward

Clever thieves about!

THERE ARE some clever thieves about!

Neighbourhood Watch in Spain (Vecinos Cooperando y Colaborando de Espana) would like bring to everyone’s attention that within the province of Alicante, thieves are making use of specialist locksmith tools to gain entry to properties and cars.

These tools can now be easily purchased over the internet without control, accompanied by videos to show how to use them! Whilst this is a difficult problem to

combat, awareness can help and it is suggested in an article in the Spanish press that homeowners make use of ‘double locks’ and other security measures to life a little more difficult for thieves.

Should thieves gain access then it will be more difficult to steal valuables like cash, credit cards, mobile phones etc. if they are out of sight and thus not easily accessible - a small safe for some of these and other small items would be a good idea. Simple routine habits of

locking garden gates, house doors and windows, tidying valuables out of sight and in cars engaging the central locking immediately everyone is in the car will make everyday life more safe and secure.

Director wanted A LONG established Theatre Group is seeking a musical director after the retirement of their present excellent MD. The group has a very long history of performing high class musical theatre and have been very fortunate to have had the services of two well known former Musical Directors who have proved conclusively that actors can learn well honed singing skills and perform to a high level.

Do you have the skills to control, cajole and motivate a group of people never thought that they could perform high standard musical theatre. We are looking for someone with the skills to lead and direct our music and who will ensure that our singing and chorus work is of high standard.

What the group is seeking is a new Musical Director who can continue to stretch and develop the singing and chorus skills of this group. Ideally we are looking for someone who has experience in working with groups and taking control of their singing and being responsible for the musical contents of our shows.

“THAT CONCLUDES the meeting…” our union convener said, “and I think we should be pleased with the outcome.” I was pleased beyond words; the endless talking was done and the corned beef sarnies were on their way.

My joy at our new pay award however, (our first in three years) was tinged with a soupcon of sour grapes.

Let me tell you just how much the 0.09% over a million years is really worth: if it were translated to an hourly rate, it’d be ten pence an hour. That’s about four quid a week!

Now, what you have to bear in mind is that since the last pay award petrol – to highlight just one commodity - has gone up about ten pounds a week. So, already we’re six quid worse off and yet we’ve had a rise. “Oh yeah we’re delighted,” I smiled a grim smile at the convener, “but not half as delighted as those MPs in Westminster.” He shook his head and sighed: “Nowt we can do about that, those monkeys are a law unto themselves.”

And aren’t they just? Despite all the rhetoric about, “we’re all in this together” the truth of the matter is that since all the expenses scandal the snouts haven’t come out of the trough. Not a bit of it; and now as a Christmas present to themselves they’ve awarded each other a

massive eleven percent pay hike – Merry MP Christmas!

Along with all the commuters on their computers I read in Monday’s Metro, that just days after chancellor George Boy-Ozzie’s claim that “We will cap overall welfare spending,” the unpalatable revelation that “MPs are set to enjoy an 11 per cent pay increase courtesy of the taxpayer”. The Metro reported, “The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa) is understood to have given the salary hike the green light, which will increase an MP’s wage from £66,300 by an extra £7,600.” Hmmm, that really makes our four quid a week look a bit sad, eh? I don’t think we’ll be ‘set to enjoy’ ours quite as much as the horrible Members will theirs. Ho hum, but I’ll bet the disapproval will be wide.

Radio 4’s Moneybox, for example, commented that “Ipsa is expected to try and quell criticism by also announcing changes to MPs’ pensions and perks – in order to cover the £4.6million cost of raising the annual salaries”. Presumably, they’ll try to prevent perks like huge

duck houses built on lakes and free first-class London to Scotland travel for treasury ministers wives, eh Danny?

Earlier this year David Cameron said such a boost to MPs’ income would be ‘unthinkable’ unless certain concessions were made which would reduce the cost of Westminster elsewhere. Clearly, those concessions have been found. I did hear that the cost of an average Latte has gone through the roof in Westminster. Yup making MPs pay more for their Mocha will pave the way for covering that £4.6 million.

Meanwhile, at the top of the Westminster food chain, all three main political leaders are said to be against the pay rise. Mind you, aren’t they all millionaires anyway? So Conservative’s Cameron, Labour’s Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg of the Liberal Democrats ‘promise’ to reject the extra money doesn’t seem much of a sacrifice, does it? I know, I’ll get all the guys at work to reject our four quid a week, surely that’ll help our hard up MPs get their raise...

IT’S THAT time of the year again, when we are going on our travels, visiting family and friends to celebrate Christmas or deciding just to get away on a cruise or go to a hotel. It can be a lovely time but what if an accident, illness or god forbid even death occurs and you have not taken out travel insurance, the experience could be very costly. How sad to have the joy that proceeded the holiday taken away by worry. Please don’t just say, “ it won’t happen to me” recently we were made aware of a case, where the husband died on a cruise, luckily he had travel insurance which dealt with all the complicated details of the autopsy and the repatriation back to his home country.

Its no good at all spending money on a policy that doesn’t cover you fully, I suggest that you check a few points: Do you have any kind of illness, high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and have you been asked to complete a health check, if not it could mean that you will not be covered for any pre existing condition. It is so easy for an insurer to link an illness to any condition you may already have.

Are you covered for repatriation to your home country? This is so important.

What age group does your insurer go up to? Our policy goes up to 85 years old.

Sports and activities are covered, but sorry, you can’t ride a camel or an elephant, but you can go in a hot air balloon, snorkeling, or even should you wish to

celebrate in a big way, parachuting!!

And finally, £10.000.000 emergency medical expenses, this is just a brief resume.

Just imagine you are in a foreign country and a serious problem occurs, imagine how you would deal with it yourself, not an easy situation to be in. It is far better to be prudent and pay a realistic amount to insure yourself adequately. If you have a SIP card, you would be very wise to obtain your EHIC for cover abroad, which can be obtained from Newcastle.

In Javea I have separated the renewal department, now the ladies have their own office. Fortunately they are all kept very busy and every client is contacted by telephone or email, with Liberty trying to keep the premiums down or even the same, it’s not always possible, as there is annual inflation based on prices of building materials, car parts, service etc, unfortunately, everything increases in life.

Liberty will never quote you an inflated price and then lower it should you come back to us with a cheaper quote, they will never enter into a price war, and always give the best quote to start with. One thing that amazes me, is that when clients discover that an insurer has been overcharging them for years, they often remain with them, why would you stay with a company who has obviously not been giving you the best price.

Torrevieja Stroke Support Group’s fun day

by Keith Nicol THE LOUNGE, in Lago Jardin II, Los Balcones, welcomed members from the TSSG, Torrevieja Stroke Support Group on Monday for a fun day of bring and buy stalls and Petanca. Organised by owners Darren Lilley and partner Marita, the day was primarily to raise awareness of the group who offer support for family members of stroke patients, and the care and attention that is needed after sufferers return from hospital, plus occupational and voice therapies.

The fun day started and 11.00am and went well into the night and included raffles, darts, music, dancing and an opportunity for members from TSSG to meet with residents and Torrevieja’s Councillor for Foreigners, Rosario Martinez and the new Director of the Foreign Residents Office, Juan Paul Mulero.

TSSG are entering their tenth year and have meetings every Friday in the Annex behind Age Concern in La Siesta, Torrevieja, at 2.45pm. They offer invaluable advice and information to sufferers, families and friends along with speech, occupational, psychological and physical therapy from registered professionals. One of their main areas of focus is to help the carers, usually partners of family members who suddenly find themselves in a completely new role as carer; for which they are usually totally untrained and unprepared for.

Robin Hargrave’s Poppy Appeal MANY PEOPLE chose the Costa Blanca to retire to, and following the move, getting settled in and making new friends, many then discover that there is more to retirement than the popular pastimes of bowls, golf, lunch with the ladies, long walks and entertaining visitors.

by Keith Nicol ONE SUCH person who has never taken his retirement seriously is Robin Hargrave. Small world that it is, Robin was Cruise Director on Holland America’s Volendam in 1982, where I had the privilege of working with him 31 years ago.

A former Cruise Director with Holland America, Chandris, Louis Line and Cunard, Robin was an accomplished entertainer, starting out spinning 45s as a Disc Jockey and then developing a very accomplished Illusion Act, which he toured on cruise ships and hotels around the world. Robin first visited Spain on a ‘package holiday’ with Cosmos Tours back in 1969 and bought his first home on the Costa Blanca back in 1984, long before the property boom, and has called Spain ‘home’ ever since.

Since retiring from entertaining, Robin has been a major figure in the world of Charity fundraising though his membership with the RNA: Royal Naval Association and RBL: Royal British Legion, while also supporting other causes.

He is a past chairman of the RNA and presently puts his major time and effort in working with the RBL, for which he

Casino Mediterranean sponsors football CASINO MEDITERRANEAN has signed an agreement with local football team CD Orihuela Costa to be their official partner for the 2013/14 season. This event took place at the Zenia Boulevard premises of the Casino along with the participation of the President of the Club, Eugenio Lizarralde, the Director General of Casino Mediterráneo, Antonio Barajas plus local politicians, Robert Houliston, José Antonio Aniorte and Pedro Mabcebo. The club was founded in 2010 and this season is presently fourth place in Second Regional with only four points separating them from second place. Many of these players come from the Vega Baja region and a proud Eugenio Lizarralde said: “We started the season very strongly and we are confident of gaining promotion to First Regional next season.”

Club members meetings with Torrevieja’s mayor Eduardo Dolon at last year’s Association Day

by Keith Nicol TRAC, TORREVIEJA Retired Activities Club is now in their eighth year of finding things to keep those with time on their hands busy. The club was founded by Peter Wilson in October 2005 and has grown in strength ever since. TRAC welcome all nationalities, but nearly all members are native English speakers. The club is essentially an opportunity for like minded couples to get together and enjoy various actives, socialise and

enjoy life to the fullest in Spain.

They hold a monthly meeting on the third Wednesday of each month from October thru June, at the International Marina Bar at the International Marina in Torrevieja. Each month they invite a different speaker to entertain members, one of whom will be yours truly in the new year!

Most members turn up early around 10.30am to meet with and talk to friends whilst having a coffee, with the meeting starting at 11.00am. Once a month they have a Sunday lunch at various

different restaurants around Torrevieja and the surrounding area plus a monthly event day to enjoy activities such as tenpin bowling, coastal walks, picnics, petanca on the beach, visit to places of interest, coach trips to simple coffee mornings.

Motoring world help the needy

By Keith Nicol LOCAL CAR and bike clubs are banding together in Catral this weekend to help the region’s families in need. The organiser, the Automobile Club Vega Baja, has asked participants to bring non-perishable food such as rice, lentils, beans, chickpeas, oil, sugar, etc with them to donate to those less fortunate and will be distributed through the local branch of Caritas.

The event is organised for Sunday 15th December as a ‘concentration of vehicles’ of all kinds, cars, bikes, trucks, racing cars, modern and classic, antique and vintage, exotic to custom and tuning plus everything in between.

With Christmas but ten days away, participants and visitors to the event are also encouraged to donate small toys to help with a campaign where the charity provides small gift packs to those families at risk of social exclusion or those who find themselves in this position already.

The event happens in the industrial area of Poniente starting at 10.00am with a scheduled delivery of gifts to be presented to the City of Catral, who have set up this initiative through their Department of Social Welfare. Drivers and riders will later go on a short tour of the Catral Area and snacks will be provided for all participants.

Vegetable plantlets for productivity WHEN ONE starts to grow vegetables in Spain plantlets provide an easy and productive option which saves time and space, especially if you plan to grow your vegetables in restricted spaces such as containers and raised beds.

THE BENEFITS OF PLANTLETS There are seven main reasons for starting off with plantlets rather than sowing your own seed.

1. You do not need to spend the time and effort necessary to successfully raise your own plantlets from seed in the green house or open air.

2. A reasonable selection of seasonal plantlets can be purchased economically in many local markets, garden centres, commercial greenhouses and agricultural cooperatives. Ask a neighbouring Spaniard who grows vegetables where the best local source is.

3. Often the plantlets have been grown according to organic principles.

4. Typically available plantlets include the following. a. Needing little space: onions, lettuce, spinach, seakale beet, tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, cucumbers, basil, parsley and chives.

b. Needing much space: beans, courgettes, water melons, melons, squash, cauliflowers, broccoli, Romanesque and cabbage.

5. Those that need little space can be planted in large pots, containers, old bath tubs, and one metre square raised beds.

Those that need more space can be planted in very large pots, trailed down the side of raised beds, grown up trellises to save space, or of course reserved for the vegetable plot.

6. For productivity of space utilisation those that need little space can be planted in blocks rather than rows to use the available area most productively.

7. The day you plant you can start picking off the odd leaf of lettuces, spinach, basil and parsley for tasty salads.

8. As soon as you harvest a few plants they can be replaced by a new plantlet of the same or different type ensuring that your mini vegetable garden is always fully planted.

THE DISADVANTAGES OF PLANTLETS The main disadvantages of buying rather than raising your own plantlets or sowing directly in the ground are: 1.The range of vegetables and the number of varieties of each will be limited.

2.You may need to get to the local market etc. early to have first choice of the plants. In some cases you will be able to place an order in advance.

3. If you purchase plantlets from a hot house or from a coastal source when you live in land you may need to first plant them in pots/trays to harden off before planting out on a wind-blown vegetable plot.

How to beat low bank interest rates by

LOW INTEREST rates are not great for savers who prefer to keep their money in the bank and earn interest on their deposits.

IF YOU are a saver and risk-averse then you may have little alternative but to accept the low rates on offer and effectively lose money on your savings. However for those prepared to take a small amount of risk investing in the stock market via funds will give you the potential to grow your money.

The stock market isn’t a place for everyone and indeed the risks may be higher, but so often are the rewards. Careful selection and purchase of a portfolio of high quality funds for the long-term has in many instances beaten the returns that a bank deposit account provides.

The question you have to ask yourself is: how long will interest rates remain at such low levels.

Nothing has such a dramatic effect on your finances as the Bank Rate. A decision taken by a committee of nine men at the Bank of England once a month influences the cost of your mortgage,

the pricing of savings rates and the interest you pay on your credit card.

Other tools have been used to amplify the effect of low rates, such as quantitative easing (QE), the Bank of England’s money printing programme, and the Treasury’s Funding for Lending Scheme. The QE programme is on hold, but not unwound, and Funding for Lending is still running, artificially pushing down mortgage and savings rates.

So working on that basis a product that offers 5%-7% actual growth over the next 5 years is without doubt a significant benefit.

As an example you start your bond with a single investment, you can also make additional investments called top – ups.

Minimum investment is usually €25,000 or £20,000.

There are other benefits such as gross roll up, income tax proportional to gain, plus any tax paid is reported to the Spanish Authorities, so there is no need for you to do it separately.

THE PLUSVALIA tax PEOPLE OFTEN confuse the municipal or Town Hall Plusvalia Tax or IIVTNU (Tax against the increase of the increment in value of plots of urban nature) with Spanish Capital Gains tax, which is normally paid when a property is sold for more than the purchase price.

Spanish Capital Tax is calculated by the difference between the transfer value on the sale, and the acquisition value when the property was bought.

Also to take into account here are all taxes and costs inherent to the purchase. This is a national tax.

The Town Hall Plusvalia Tax or IIVTNU ( Tax against the increase of the increment in value of plots of urban nature) is different, and on this article we will try to give some information about it.

It is foreseen in the Local Entities law (Ley de Haciendas Locales), and it is a tax paid for any

increase in value experienced by the urban land, usually at the time of transfer (purchase, inheritance, etc).

This increase in value is calculated only for the plot, not the construction. The share of this tax is calculated using a formula that takes into account, among other factors, the value (cadastral value), years of ownership of the land, the tax rate, the annual percentage rate, etc.

So, the longer you have the property in your name more you will have to pay, unlike the capital gain tax where the acquisition value price is updated every year.

Transfers in favour of a spouse and children in fulfilment of an annulment, separation or divorce court orders are not subject to this tax, some charities and beneficial entities are also exempt.

Who is obliged to pay: on the sale, the vendor, on

the gift the beneficiary, on the inheritance the heirs and beneficiaries.

Deadline to pay it: on inter-vivos transfers, i.e: purchase or gift, the tax must be paid within 30 days after the transaction takes place.

On Mortis Causa transmissions, i.e: inheritance, the tax must be paid within 6 months from date of death.

In a recent modification to the law, to be able to register any deed at the Land Registry, the Plusvalia tax must now be paid before hand and proved so to the registry. Therefore, it is crucial to be sure that this tax is paid.

DO YOU know what you’re getting for Christmas? Is it a present you’ve already asked for, some money, or will it be a surprise?

PEOPLE SEEM to fall into two groups when it comes to Christmas surprises. Those who seek out their presents, feel the package and take a peek and those whose worst nightmare is to accidentally discover what Santa’s bringing them.

I come into the second group. I knew exactly where my parents hid my presents. I knew they didn’t wrap them up. I never once took a look. Why spoil Christmas morning? I also know people, however, who simply cannot resist. It’s a challenge for them and if they know where to look (or even if they don’t) they will.

In my opinion when it comes to Christmas, ignorance is bliss. However, it’s a principle that I don’t generally apply to most other areas of life. Knowledge is good, information is important. You need to understand the way things work and why things happen as they do to get the best benefits from them, and to avoid mistakes.

There are lots of examples of this when it comes to legal and fiscal matters. For example, if you know

something about inheritance law in Spain, or at least take advice from a lawyer, then it can help you to bequeath your property in such a way that less inheritance tax has to be paid by your inheritors.

Having the right information is particularly important when it comes to taxes in Spain. There are two main reasons for this. The first is that you won’t necessarily be told about them. When you bought your Spanish property you might have been informed that you should pay two non-resident property taxes. Chances are that you weren’t though.

The second reason is that taxes here don’t go away, they have a nasty habit of popping up in the most unlikely of places. For example, when you are just about to sell your property, the spectre of unpaid property taxes can delay your quick sale.

The virtuous town ONTINYENT IS the capital of the area known as the Vall d’Albaida and, like most of the towns in the area, traces its origins back to Moorish times. From the 16th Century its fortunes have been tied to the textile industry, still the most important source of income for the town today.

The barrio de la Vila, the original Moorish town, dates from the 11th and 12th Centuries. After the conquest by Jamie I, the Moors were banished to the areas outside the town walls and the Christians moved in.

AS YOU cross a bridge entering Ontinyent, to your right is a church, part of the Convento del Monjas Carmelitas (Convent of Carmelite Nuns), founded in 1574 and the oldest in the city, opposite which is a large house painted yellow ochre. This is the entry to the old town and the archway to the left, the Portal de Sant Roc, is the first entrance built by the Christians in 1256. The tiny square you enter betrays its past importance.

On your immediate left is the Palacio de la Duqesa de Almodóvar, recently renovated in the ‘let’s see what we’ve got left from other jobs and bung it all in here’ style. It’s awful, and I’m glad I don’t live opposite it and have to wake up to such an eyesore every morning. The house in the corner, number 10, is the Casa de Pala, above whose door is the shield of the Borja family.

The street leading off to the left, Calle de Sant Pere, is a narrow confine of pastel painted houses and atzucas, tiny dead-end alleyways. At the bottom of the short street, you enter a small plaza with a statue of Sant Pere seeming totally unperturbed, despite having a huge knife cleaving his skull. There’s a story there somewhere, but I couldn’t find it.

Continue downward on Calle de la Trinidad for a few metres before taking the steps to your right that wind upwards through the narrow streets to the church, the Iglesia Arciprestal de Santa Maria in the Plaza de la Vila. The site was originally that of a Moorish mezquita. The present church was built during the 14th and 15th Centuries and enlarged in 1582. At 71 metres, the bell tower is the highest in the Comunitat Valencana, topped by a splendid cupola that looks like a mini Victorian bandstand. Just behind the church is the tiny Placeta del Fossa, so called because it was used as a graveyard for the faithful that were not able to be interred within the church itself.

The old quarter continues below the steep walls of the church and, as you trip down the steps in front of the Llotgeta de Mustaçaf leading into the Plaça Mayor, you pass under the watchful gaze of three statuesque ladies representing the three virtues; Justice, Temperance and Prudence. There should be a fourth one, Fortitude, but perhaps they ran out of space.

Calle Maians, running off Plaça Mayor, is a mixture of the ancient and modern. A few metres along this street is the curiously named Círculo Industrial y Agricola with a grand façade of columns of the Doric and Ionic orders whose interior shape defies its name by being five-sided, almost matching the shape of the baize-covered card tables where pensioners while away the long afternoon hours.

D´ya fancy joining my crusade?

THE MAIN feature today is a little bit different as it concerns, not celebrities, but a full blown TV station in the shape of Channel 4.

THE NATIONAL viewing figures have just been released and the channels share of the viewer’s is way down at 5.8 per cent, a smidgen ahead of Channel 5’s 4.5 per cent.

The storyline is here as I want to start a crusade to support Ch4, especially in the wake of Lisa Campbell, editor of trade journal Broadcast, saying “However you cut the numbers Channel 4 has had a very tough year, and with their licence renewal on the agenda, there may be alarm bells ringing at Ofcom.”

I want to start a crusade because Ch4 is a non-profit organisation that makes shows through self-funding, and with these meagre means have brought top shows this year like ‘The King In The Car Park’, ‘Utopia’ ‘Southcliffe’ and Educating Yorkshire. Another reason for wanting to champion a crusade is that we need to have an alternative to the Big2, as left with BBC 1 and ITV, top quality sofa time will become a tough call.

The station was set up in November 1982 to take a few chances, and with that brief have had lots of success in the comedy area with ‘The Peep Show’ running for 8 series, and The Inbetweeners for 4 and not forgetting the hugely popular ‘Come Dine with Me.’ There’s no doubt it can take time for new formats to find an audience, a station spokesman said, adding: ‘C4 has a remit to take creative risks, champion alternative voices and stimulate debate.”

So my lovelies let me pose you this very important question; Do you want a genuine alternative to the Big2? … Answers on the back of an old 20 euro note!

It’s incredible to find out that fans of ‘The Office’ have been turning up in their droves to witness the demolishing of the building used in the BBC2 comedy show, the home of the Wernham Hogg paper company. Top tweet from Ricky Gervais read “the old Wernham Hogg building is to be demolished... Gutted... Probably write a song about this one day... Go & get the guitar.

At the time of writing Vicky Pattison of Geordie Shore was punting a fitness vid and banging on about how she is now half the size she was before and how we can all be as skinny as her if we buy it. “My workouts are only 10 minutes long” she added “so come on, who can’t do tha t? Apart from big names punting work-out vids being a serious dinosaur, sadly Vicky a big name you are not!

Big Arnie, (now this is what you call Big!) has got a charity project going in the US where he will match every dollar donated and the top prize is that the winner and a friend will ride in a tank with him and, if they fancy enjoy a cigar with him as well. He has posted a video on YouTube about it, check it out it’s a bag o’ laughs.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Step by Step Spanish - 61 Unexpected prepositions

IN ENGLISH we often follow verbs with prepositions. For example, we say “to look at” which means something different from “to look for” and “to look after”.

We “listen to” and we “put up”, “put up with” “put over” “put through” as well as “put something around” from time to time. These prepositional verbs are a huge problem for people learning English.

In Spanish we also follow verbs with prepositions, but to a much lesser extent.

The most common prepositions that follow verbs are “a”, “de”, “con” “en” and “por”.

We often guess these prepositions and even though we may get them wrong, we can usually make ourselves understood. I thought today though, I’d point out ones that just sound strange to us as English speakers, simply because they translate back oddly into English.

Our first example it to “dream about” which is Spanish is “soñar con” (to dream with). “I dreamt about you last night” (should you ever wish to say this) is “soñé

contigo anoche”. This sounds altogether unnatural to us until you get used to it. Then it sounds perfectly normal like everything else.

Another odd one is to “smell of” which is “oler a”. “The kitchen smells of fish” – “la cocina huele a pescado”. As you can see the verb “oler” is an interesting verb although “comprar” is also strange because to buy “from” someone is “comprar a”. “Compré un coche a mi hermano” means “I bought a car from my brother”. If you want to say you’ve bought something “for” someone, then you have to use “para”.

You may have already come across the bit about being married. You have to say married “with” someone, rather than married “to”. “Antonio Banderas está casado con Melanie Griffith” for example. A couple more oddities (for us anyway) are “depender de” (to depend on) and “pensar en” (to thinking about).

Having just looked through lists of these verbs to try and pick out the most interesting ones, I have noticed that there are far more verbs followed by “a” than any other preposition, closely followed in number by verbs taking “de”. This means that if you are going to guess, try “a” first, switch to “de” if that doesn’t work, and otherwise wave your arms around.

To round up this rather brief overview – don’t forget that just because we use prepositions in English, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are needed in Spanish. To go back to some of our first examples, “to look at” is simply “mirar”, “look for” is “buscar” and “look after” is “cuidar” whilst “listen to” is “escuchar” also on its own. As for the “put” verbs, we have to think about what we actually mean by each one before we translate them. For example “to put over an idea” would be best translated by “comunicar una idea”. Such are the joys of translation.

Get on yer bike Monthly cycling tips, advice and routes CYCLE ROUTE 21: LA MANGA AND THE MAR MENOR WELL IT was another ‘Red day’ in Spain so a day off and a full day’s cycling for us in the glorious winter sunshine.

We decided to take our bikes (all hybrid bikes) in the cars to San Pedro (4 cars / 4 couples) and park outside the Thaialasia hotel. There is a great cycle track here, taking you along the esplanade all the way to Santiago de Ribera (approx. 6kms): nice and flat.

We boarded the first ferry of the day (11.30am) which cost 4€ each and 1€ to take our bikes. It was a picturesque crossing with great views of the mainland and the mountains.

After a 45minute crossing we disembarked at Thomas Maestre Port, the largest marina on La Manga, and began cycling at about 12.30pm, leaving the Port and heading for the one and only road up the strip which has a cycle track most of the way. We cycled for about 15kms then stopped at a really nice sandy beach for a drink, swim and cool down.

Continuing, we followed the road - you can’t really go wrong. At the end of the strip we kept to the right (Cabo De Palos on the left) and headed for Los Nietos, passing through the salt flats and staying close to the shore. We followed rough tracks most of the way, stopping for a well-deserved lunch.

After lunch, we picked up the road (F34) which was dead flat and more or less straight all the way, passing through

Los Urrutias, Punta Brava and Los Alcazares. We then passed through Los Narejos, San Javier, and finally arrived back at Santiago De la Ribera where we found a nice Tapas bar on the sea front and ordered ice cream and coffees before cycling the last 6kms back to the cars.

An excellent ride - one of the best trips we have done in a long time. Although it was relatively long we took all day and enjoyed the scenery, stopping regularly.

If you think it might be too far you can always cycle to the top of the strip and cycle back to the port and get the ferry back (Roughly 40kms). The ferry goes every two hours during the summer until midnight. However, the last ferry back in the winter is 4.30pm.

We were using Strava, a cycling app for mobile phones that records the route, distance, etc., and we cycled for five hours, covered 75kms, and burned 1,300 calories, a great achievement for the group as we had two people who had never cycled this distance before. We all met at the Arches in Quesada at 9am and arrived back at 7pm.

Next month: Overnight at Fortuna.

SUMMARY A fantastic day out, the entire route easy and flat with fantastic views and you just want to keep on cycling…

Life recipe Marinated chicken kebabs THESE SPICY kebabs are ideal on their own with a fresh salad or as part of a choice of barbecued meats. They are best prepared in advance and left to stand for at least an hour before cooking.

• 350g skinless chicken meat, cut into cubes • 1 tbls tomato ketchup • A small piece of fresh ginger, peeled and grated (or 1 tsp powdered ginger) • 1 tsp mild paprika • The grated rind and juice of an orange • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1 tbls olive oil

1. Combine all the ingredients for the marinade in a large bowl then stir in the chicken pieces. Set aside for at least an hour.

2. Thread the marinated chicken onto skewers then grill or barbecue until the chicken is well browned on the outside and cooked through in the middle.

Serves 2 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 10-15 minutes

Tip If you are using bamboo skewers, soak them in water beforehand to stop them from burning on the barbecue. Don’t cram too many pieces of chicken on each skewer. Leave a little space between each piece and this will help them brown and cook evenly.

ON SUNDAY ‘Jaspas Bar’ at Balcon-Al- Mar, Javea in conjunction with ‘Rental Mania’, held their monthly public auction which included a charity raffle for the Denia Preventorio (home for children from 3-16 years) Christmas Party.

The event featured a range of stalls, a fashion show by ‘La Boutique’, mulled wine, mince pies, roasted chestnuts were available and of course Santa Claus appeared with his helpers.

The proceedings were started by a fine performance by a local Choir singing a medley of numbers to a well attended appreciative audience.

At the end of the day over 320€ was raised for the charity and many thanks for the generosity of local businesses who donated magnificent prizes also big thanks to auctioneer extrordinaire Andre Le Masurier, all the bar staff, Santa and helpers for all their hard work.

Firefox tip HI AUNTY: Twice recently I have tried to delete people listed in my Firefox email contacts and in the Twitter contacts list, by right clicking on them. But delete is not in the dropdown menu, only: ‘WWW’ in a red ring and ‘Block this site’.

DON´T TOUCH IT! - Both times it wrecked Firefox and I only managed to recover it by doing a System Restore.

One perfectly hit shot amidst a multitude of duffed ones can be enough to think you’ve found the answer. It’s why so many players go back for more.

But there is one aspect of golf that never changes: its power to surprise.

Because golf is a game you never stop learning.

This month I was one of several golf professionals in the North and South Costa Blanca who attended a European Golf Teachers Federation continual

professional development days at Oliva Nova Golf Club.

The event was arranged to give us the opportunity to learn the benefits of the “Trackman” system which analyses swing and ball flight.

The result? It has revitalised my thirst for knowledge – as a player and as a teacher.

Like the first-timer bitten by the golf ‘bug’, I have found a new ‘toy’. And, it has changed completely my thinking about shot-making, Trackman produces proof which defies traditional teaching methods, particularly on how to produce a fade and a draw. In effect, since it was introduced, it has re-written the laws of ball flight.

Not only does Trackman show ball flight after a ball is hit, it also explains why this has happened. In short, it

takes the guess work out of why the ball has flown in a certain way.

The two basics of ball striking are club face angle and swing path although clubface angle has four times greater impact than club path in determining the ball’s starting direction (see diagram left/right/above/below.)

Understanding this and how to correctly combine these two factors is the key to controlling the ball and striking it with a high level of consistency.

By introducing this knowledge to my own game I am already longer and more consistent off the tee and my short game has also improved.

The simulators in my shop show me my results. And, using their balltracking facilities, I can help you, too.

Knowledge is power and, no matter what your handicap, there is always more to learn.

IN THE vast majority of golfers I see their left wrist and elbows collapsing at impact or just after impact. This produces inconsistent ball striking.

Remember, it’s important to control your left wrist at impact. Do this and you will control your ball flight. Control your ball flight and you’ll control your game.

So, next time you go to the practice range, try: - keeping your left wrist flat and arms straight as you hit the ball; and

- maintaining this extended position for longer through impact
