Near fatal road accident 07 - 13 MAY 2010

Marie-Sol recovering in Torrevieja Hospital

ROAD SAFETY concerns have been raised yet again on the Orihuela Coast after a 78year-old woman was knocked down as she was crossing a busy road. The accident happened last Saturday morning, when the Spanish lady was using the pedestrian crossing between Via Parks I and II in Playa Flamenca. As a result of the accident she was seriously injured and taken by ambulance to Torrevieja Hospital, where she was treated for a fractured pelvis. Regular readers may recall a similar incident two years ago, on exactly the same crossing involving 21 year old Kate Barofka, who suffered serious injuries from which she is

still recovering. After that accident, neighbours and local business owners organised a petition signed by 150 people demanding speed bumps to reduce motorists’ speed when approaching this crossing. Witnesses to Saturday’s accident have said that, in their opinion, the car was going much faster than the obligatory 30km/hour, one estimating that the driver was doing double that speed. The previous petition was presented to the Councillor for the Coast, Jose Antonio Aniorte, on 20th November 2008 by opposition party CLARO and was registered officially, together with other documents, in the Playa Flamenca office of the Town Hall.
