A 23-YEAR-OLD woman lost her life in Catral on Saturday after being allegedly stabbed by her former partner. This is the third case of a woman losing her life at the hands of her partner or former partner in the Alicante Province in as many months and comes at a time when the Alicante Diputacion is promoting a campaign against domestic violence. Ironically, just four weeks prior to this latest incident, Maria Asuncion Prieto, the Diputada for Women, was in the municipality of Catral promoting the ‘Sal Pitando’ campaign, which asks victims of domestic violence to ‘Blow the Whistle’ on their partners. She was pictured with the Catral Mayor, Aurelio Albero, at the Town Hall and appealed to the women of Catral to “stand up and be counted” if they were victims
of domestic violence. This latest incident took place last Saturday afternoon at a house on Calle Culiáñez Pascual Guerrero. The victim has been named as Stephanie L.G. who has lived in the town of Catral her whole life. Her father’s family are natives of Catral and are well known in the area and the whole town is in a state of shock following the tragedy. A 24-year-old man from nearby Crevillent, a former partner of Stephanie’s, is accused of her murder and was arrested by the Guardia Civil in Almoradi. It is alleged that the young man stabbed Stephanie four times with a kitchen knife in various parts of the body and then tried to kill himself. Unfortunately, he didn’t have the guts to finish himself off properly and called his father to tell him what had happened. Continued on page 3
