Outrage at asset ‘inquisition’ FURIOUS EXPATS are mounting a rearguard action at the new law requiring the declaration of offshore assets describing the directive as the new Spanish Inquisition. by Jack Troughton
British Ambassador Giles Paxman
FURIOUS EXPATS are mounting a rearguard action at the new law requiring the declaration of offshore assets describing the directive as the new Spanish Inquisition. Harsh penalties await anyone failing to declare overseas holdings worth more than 50,000€ to the tax authorities – but even those who attempt to comply with the law by the deadline of 30th April could be hit with fines for unintentional errors in a complex reporting system. Fears are growing that the Hacienda is looking to milk a new ‘cash cow’ and Madrid is paving the way to increase taxes. After the problems of the notorious
‘land grab’ laws, the change has already been branded a ‘money grab’. A petition to the European Parliament is being prepared by groups questioning whether Spain’s new law – passed last November by Royal Decree – is in breach of the EU Charter of Fundamental Human Rights and the European Savings Directive by the possibility of paying additional taxes on income already taxed at source. And it is thought likely the Spanish law could face a court challenge for breaching bilateral treaties to avoid double taxation. As the protests mount expats of all nationalities on the Costa Blanca affected by the new law are being urged to lobby their own governments, MPs and MEPs – as well as consuls and ambassadors. The British Ambassador Giles Paxman, known for his keen interest in the British community in Spain, will be asked to intervene using diplomatic channels – especially as the UK currently chairs the G8 economic grouping. by Keith Nicol A SOCIAL HOUSING program for Torrevieja was announced last week by Welfare Councillor Hall, Tomás Ballester. On Friday March 8, the City Council approved the agreement for the creation of funds for Social housing. Tomás Ballester recalled that in January of this year 2013, the Federación Española de Municipios y Provincias, the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), agreed to sign the Agreement for Funding for Social Housing for those Affected by Evictions (Convenio para el Fondo Social de Viviendas para Afectados por Desahucios), together with the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, the Ministry of Development, the Bank of Spain, financial institutions and the platform of the Third Sector. Notably, the role of the FEMP in this agreement is to provide local entities with power to oversee the funding as a partner in this scheme. The Councillor for Welfare explained
that this agreement is intended to create a social housing fund which allows those facing eviction an opportunity to rent a property owned by the financial institutions. The Social Fund is aimed at those faced with eviction from January 1, 2008. Any new lease offered will be for a minimum of 150€ and a maximum of 400€ per month, with a maximum limit of 30% of the total income of the household, being spread over the term of a two-year contract, which may be extended for another year. The job of the Social Fund is to certify that applicants are at a stage of particular social vulnerability. It is at this point that the local authority is involved as a partner. Obligations assumed by the local entity to be associated organization are: To advise those seeking information about the procedure for applying for housing of social funds. Tomás Ballester stressed that these measures are intended to improve access to adequate housing for people who are in vulnerable situations.
Grant applications open for non-profit organisations THERE ARE almost 150 registered clubs and associations in Torrevieja and most if not all of them, have non-profit status. Many of them are involved with charitable activities and for those that are pure non-profit organisations, the opportunity to apply for grant aid is now open. Councillor for Citizenship of the City of Torrevieja, Agustina Esteve, said on Monday, March 11, that the window of opportunity to apply for grants, was now open for the next 30 business days. The application deadline for subsidies for associations and non-profit organisations for the year 2013 runs until April 18, 2013. More information on status and requirements to qualify for grants and subsidies can be collected at the Department of Citizenship of the City of Torrevieja.

New check protects children A NEW police check will help British schools in Spain weed out people unsuitable to be working with youngsters to help cut the risk of sexual abuse. by Jack Troughton The International Child Protection Certificate (ICPC) has been launched over fears some international schools, charities and other agencies overseas lack the same level of monitoring available to organisations in the UK – in some cases enabling sex offenders gain positions of trust with children. The certificate comes from the child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre and was presented to 200 delegates from 60 authorised schools at the National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS) annual conference in Seville.
British Ambassador Giles Paxman attended the event and spoke to members of the Spanish authorities and several school delegates. Mr Paxman said: “Schools have a critical role to play in guaranteeing the safety and wellbeing of children. The new International Child Protection Certificate is an effective tool designed to reduce the chances of sex offenders gaining access to children. I encourage all schools in Spain to include it as part of their staff recruitment.” The certificate was first unveiled at the British Embassy in Madrid at a function attended by Spanish government and law enforcement officers.
Woman dies after being run over by her own car IN A shocking accident on Tuesday a woman was run over and killed by her own vehicle at her home in Vilamarxant. Eva G, the 33-yearold victim got out of her car on the sloping driveway outside her villa at around 9am. When the minivan began to roll backward

An inside job… A FAMILY in Alicante has allegedly been robbed by a Paraguayan domestic employee of jewellery to the value of 25,000€. The jewellery is thought to have been stolen in small quantities over several months and only now been discovered missing by the lady of the house. National police confirmed that the items were pawned and have managed to recover part of the haul to the value of around 16,000€. The Guardia Civil has also reported the arrest of another domestic worker, this time in the province of Valencia, accused of stealing jewellery worth 40,000€, pawned for its scrap gold value.
Diego Hernandez’s new look by Keith Nicol ON WEDNESDAY the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by the Councillor for Infrastructure and Contracting, Javier Montoro, visited the redevelopment and pedestrianization of the streets Diego Hernández, Ramón, Cajal and Calle Balandro. These streets have undergone a major refurbishment starting at Calle Torrevejenses Ausentes. The mayor announced that these redevelopment works will be fully completed before Easter and will completely change the appearance of the street, becoming a pedestrian area. The Mayor inspected the new lighting system that has already been installed which consists of 15 LED streetlights plus the addition of 12 Washingtonia palms o that make up the 1,200 square meters of non-skid granite pavement tiles. Eduardo Dolon stressed that the installation of these modern streetlights will increase the quality of light and
generate significant energy savings of up to 70% over conventional low level lighting. Diego Hernandez has received very similar treatment to Calle Torrevejenses Ausentes which will encourage pedestrian traffic on a street, that has never been all that busy. The mayor stressed that this type of redevelopment of streets in the city centre is to enhance and streamline the areas of business, hospitality and tourism in the city of Torrevieja. Eduardo Dolon recalled that the pedestrianization work on Calle Diego Hernandez is part of the overall redevelopment of Calle Torrevejenses Ausentes, which received an investment of 663,184€, funded by the Generalitat Valenciana through the Special Plan of Support for Productive Investment of the Generalitat Valenciana (Plan Trust ). This project has created a direct line of communication between the pedestrianized Plaza de Oriente, from Calle Zoa and Maria Parodi to Plaza Waldo Calero.

Torrevieja’s climate and weather in photos
by Keith Nicol TORREVIEJA’S VISTA Alegre exhibition centre is the centre for the first display of photos and information showing an entire year of climate change in Torrevieja. The content of the exhibition is translated into English and the display is open until March 24. The inauguration of the exhibition aroused great interest and was opened by the city’s mayor, Eduardo Dolon. The Non Profit Group, Project Mastral, organised the exhibition, ‘Climate of Torrevieja’, which adds a valuable resource about the lifestyle of Torrevieja. This interesting exhibition allows one to discover the variety of climate changes that the city experiences though the display of
more than 100 photographs taken in Torrevieja by various local photographers. The pictures were printed thanks to the collaboration of photographer Antonio Garcia. Images cover all types of weather; rain, wind, hail or thunderstorms plus nine different posters with information about Torrevieja’s climate: historic weather events and torrevejenses words related to meteorology, among other useful information. Visitors will also find some diverse meteorological instrumentation, that’s used to collect data from the State Meteorology Agency in Murcia, a contributor to this exhibition together with some items from the Valencian Community. These include an automatic weather sta-

tion, a barograph, a rain gauge and different registration forms, all of which hope to help educate visitors about Torrevieja’s microclimate and the influences of the surrounding mountains and two of Europe’s largest salt lakes. The main aim of the exposition is to allow the public more information about the science of meteorology. For those who wish to know more, members from the Mastral project will be on hand to explain the most common weather patterns and demonstrate the workings of the instruments on display. Dates for this are Saturday 16 at midday and Saturday 23, at six o’clock, on the occasion of the celebration of World Meteorological Day. Talks will be in Castilian and are totally free.
PENALTY The minimum penalty for failing to declare an asset is 10,000€ as well as income tax on undeclared income, late-payment interest and penalties of up to 150% of the total tax due on the asset. Further, unpaid tax of more than 120,000€ from an undeclared overseas asset could be considered a criminal offence as tax fraud. It is understood the controversial law has been passed after Spain’s banking crisis triggered a flow of assets and money out of the country into tax havens. However, the net has caught people who have legally left savings and other assets in their home countries or invested around the world. A spokesman for the Ministry of Hacienda said the law came about because of the globalisation of financial activity and increasing problems of tax evasion and avoidance. He said: “It makes it necessary to establish a specific obligation of information concerning assets located abroad.” This week the British Embassy updated its ‘finance page’ of the ‘Living in Spain’ section of website www.ukinspain.fco.gov.uk to include the requirement of declaring assets – including bank accounts, securities, rights, insurances, annuities, and property and warned the declaration was a separate exercise to an annual tax return - advising people to seek expert advice as “taxation is a complex issue.” However, the embassy also noted Britain has a double tax agreement with Spain to insure people did not pay tax on the same income twice. Some experts believe that the new law will cause expats to move out of Spain – especially those who face being “clobbered again” with tax on savings. RTN was told Spain appeared to be “killing the Golden Goose” and “the straw that broke the camel’s back” triggering an exodus and changing the plans of people planning a Spanish retirement or new life in the sun. And one businessman said he viewed the new regulation “with horror” and as a “total disaster” for the struggling property market and the economy as a whole – costing Spain potential investment and the wealth and job opportunities created by expats. A veteran rights campaigner said with the deadline just six weeks away “it is no time to just sit on your hands because the timetable is very tight.” He said: “Most of the experts don’t appear to have a clue what is to be done or how to report assets. It is time to cause a stink - they say this was designed to catch out Spaniards moving money abroad but I don’t believe it, they have already had two amnesties to come clean. “Expats are very exposed and not very well organised. If they try to comply the complexities of the declaration can get them into trouble.”
British parent claims her baby was stolen in Spain RUTH APPLEBY, a 49-year-old teaching assistant living in Richmond, Yorkshire, believes that her daughter, supposedly stillborn in a Spanish hospital in 1992, was in fact stolen by a criminal baby trafficking network that raged in Spain from the sixties through to the nineties. by Jan Gamm 300,000 LIVE babies were pronounced dead prior to being sold to adoptive parents in a shocking regime that involved a network of doctors, nurses, priests and nuns. Ruth’s baby was born by caesarean section at the Hospital Materno Infantil Teresa Herrera in Coruña. Her husband, Howard, saw
Spanish dentist hits a nerve A SPANISH dentist from Zaragoza has been arrested after being accused of pulling out a patient’s teeth when his bill was disputed! 39-year-old FJGS allegedly removed several implanted teeth from his middle-aged female patient last month following a heated discussion over her account and the amount owed. The woman immediately reported the ‘assault’ to the local police. The dentist has been arrested on suspicion of ‘causing serious injury’ pending a court hearing.
A chill wind… SIXTEEN REGIONS, including Alicante, are now on yellow alert for chilly weather over the next week. Valencia remains on orange alert for strong coastal winds. In areas of Cantabria snow will likely reach 25cm thick, according to a report from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). Aemet reminds the public that an orange weather alert warns of unusual weather phenomena with some degree of danger: yellow signifies no risk although some specific activity.
the baby was alive and healthy but hours later was informed the child had died and they could not see her as a post mortem had already been performed. In 2010 Ruth flew back to Spain and secured an exhumation of the baby’s grave which revealed the skeleton of a much older child. An enquiry is now underway, with the support of the British police and also Foreign Secretary William Hague.

Betty and Iwan celebrate 60 years together by Keith Nicol BETTY AND Iwan (John) met in the town of Bromsgrove in 1952, married the following year and now 60 years later, even Queen Elizabeth II knows about them! John was born in the Ukraine and Betty is from Birmingham, UK. John moved to the UK following the WWII and at the time of their marriage he was 28 years of age and Betty only 17! Betty was attending a secretarial college and she used to see John hanging around from the window. One thing led to another and Betty and a friend double dated John and his friend and romance blossomed. Betty’s parents were at first opposed to them marrying because of the age difference and John didn’t speak a lot of English but they were in love and determined to be together, so Betty’s parents gave their blessing and the rest, as they say, is history! They married in Bromsgrove at St. Peters church on the 7 March 1953 and had five children; Elaine, Kevin, Ian, Jason and Craig who have given them seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Betty’s main job was bringing up the children and looking after the home but she also worked as a auxillery nurse in later years while John worked on the railways and later for a local firm called Garringtons, who made steel components for many years. His last job was working
for Boots the Chemist in the warehouse side. Daughter in law Wendy said “Betty and Iwan lived in Bromsgrove from 1953 till 1986 and decided to move to Quesada Spain in 1986, where they have lived for 27 years, this September coming. Their decision to move to Spain was based on happy holidays spent in Benidorm and they took the plunge of moving to Ciudad Quesada, which back then was a fairly new project and unknown urbanization, with all their worldly goods and a lot of guts! They soon became members of many different expat clubs including the Brit Bingo and Social Club, where they made many new friends. They also joined The Euroleisure Club and Betty is still an active member of Quesada Ladies Club. For many years they enjoyed a very active social life but sadly John, who is now 88, is no longer in the best of health and needs to be cared for by Betty but they have been helped by many people of all walks of life including the Alzheimer’s Ascociation and Age Concern, who have been wonderful, as well as friends and family.” Betty and John celebrated their special day at home with some family and friends. They were thrilled to receive so many cards and warm wishes including their special card
from the Queen. They would like to thank everyone who sent cards flowers and gifts. Congratulation to you both from all of us too, at RTN.

Fishing for info WE VISIT Torrevieja once or twice a year. We will be back in Spain at Easter and have a question that I hope you or your readers can readers can answer. My son and I enjoy fishing, either at the lakes close to Torremendo, off the rocks in Torrevieja or in a friends boat, off the coast. Last year, another fisherman told me I need to have a fishing license, which should be renewed every year. In the last ten years, I’ve only fished six or seven times and wondered if we need one or not? Can anybody help me with information regarding whether or not I need to get a license for my son and if so, what is the cost, where do I go to get one and what documentation do I need to take with me? The fisherman said that maybe my son does not need one because he is a juvenile but I’d rather be safe than sorry. And if I get a licence in Torrevieja, is this OK for Orihuela Costa or other parts of Spain. Many thanks, John Bird
Need to improve security ONCE AGAIN more break-ins on caravan/ camping sites around Benidorm. On Monday 3rd March two residential caravans were broken into in the early hours with cash and laptops taken. This is the second time in six months: last time nine touring caravans were broken into and the owners gassed! This is so frightening for elderly residents living alone. Would the owners please look into the security system and maybe think about improving CCTV around the site, especially on the perimeter or ask the residents what they want. Name and address supplied
Taking your life in your own hands I REALLY appreciate the Zenia Boulevard as it provides something for everyone. However, as a La Zenia holidaymaker may I make the following requests? Why are there no speed bumps on the two new crossings on Avenida Villamartin? A speed limit sign was erected last week but you still have to take your life in your hands
when you use either of these two crossings. Also on approaching Zenia Boulevard from La Zenia there is no crossing and you again have to take your life in your hands to cross the road into the shopping area. So come on Orihuela Costa lets have some action on these. Sandra Orr
Causing no harm JACQUIE DORMAND is complaining (RTN 8th – 14th March) that she can’t park at the official parking spaces near to the beach by La Pinet, because they are full of camper vans. May I remind her that this is the only place in the whole area where campers can park free, but she can park a car anywhere else, in spots prohibited to vans and much closer to the seaside? She states that van owners don’t have to pay SUMA, electric/gas charges. My wife and I have lived 30km from the coast for almost eight years and regularly go to the beach for a few days at a time. Therefore we do pay SUMA and bills. Although we cook our own breakfasts, we eat in the village at La Marina for other meals. We do not want to stay on ‘official sites’, thank you Ms Dormand! If, as is suggested, Elche Council prevents camper vans parking at El Pinet, we shall go to other free areas, and La Marina Village restaurants and shops will miss out. We do no harm, cause no damage, and always take our litter and waste away with us, so stop being selfish, complaining about something that is doing no harm! Peter Realey, Callosa de Segura
Muchos gracias
LIVING ON my own (with one dog and eight cats) and being a very independent person, I was really very surprised by the help I received when I had a fractured hip, trying (with horrendous pain) to get about and keep myself supported. It happened in April 2012. Due to cancelled appointments and delays, numerous Xrays, appointments, specialists, doctors, etc. (this is mentioned not as anyone’s fault really but just to explain the delay) I got into Denia Hospital on 5th February 2013. I cannot mention anyone personally, this wouldn’t be fair. But I would like to thank (and not in any particular order), friends and colleagues at Javea Computer Club, local shop keepers at Javea Arenal, friends and neighbours at Toscamar and our local (Toscamar) supermarket, the local Cabo la Nao Farmacia, people at Urbatenis, my Vet, Help of Denia and finally Denia Hospital. If I’ve missed anyone, sorry, but you all know who you are). From the caring and happy doctors and nurses down through to the chirpy meal suppliers and smiling cleaners it was a pleasure to be there. Anyone needing to go there need have no fear at all. Muchos gracias -y tengo mucho que hacer con mi vivo -whoops - ¡perdone usted! Mi alumno español! From horrendous pain (for 10 months) to a little pain and hardly any, thanks to everyone. With kind regards from Mick Scarles (known as Michael Derek Scarles by the staff at Denia Hospital)
Half of glaucoma sufferers are unaware they have the disease
by Jan Gamm GLAUCOMA AFFECTS one million people in Spain and is the leading cause of irreversible blindness. Yet 50% of sufferers are unaware that they have the disease. During World Glaucoma Week, from 10th to 16th March, the IMO (In Memory Of Foundation) is promoting awareness to help prevent Glaucoma with early detection. The campaign includes free tests held until 15th March at the Early Diagnosis of Ocular Microsurgery Unit at the Institute of Barcelona. It is recommended that everyone undergoes eye examinations twice a year starting at age 40 and annually in the case of risk: people with direct family history of glaucoma, high myopia or other severe vision problems, over 65, and the black or Asian people.
New technology to detect horse in meat products A NEW system called the ‘RapidFinder Equine ID Kit’ has been developed and is now being marketed by a company from Valencia. The Institute of Genomic Medicine (IMEGEN), a company located in the Science Park of the
University of Valencia, has developed technology to detect (through DNA) the presence of horse meat in food. The company has taken just over a month to refine the product which can produce results in 12 hours.

Slim down for your holidays: The Ultimate Gastric Band Hypnosis Session By Alan Gilchrist: Costa Blanca’s top Hypnotherapist EASTER APPROACHES and with it, Easter eggs followed by summer holidays! Carb-crammed days, filled with gorging on anything and everything you want at the beach or at a barbeque! At Easter, we eat almost three times more calories than we should. And after the holidays, when we should all return to healthy eating habits, we make excuses for waiting another day to start that diet! While on holiday we consume enough food to gain two pounds per day! To lose two pounds of weight, more than 7,000 calories must be burned off – and if we consume almost 8,000 calories per day - well, the maths is easy! If you are ready to start a diet, the Ultimate one session Fast Track Hypnosis Weight Control or Gastric Band Hypnosis is the answer! I offer two different types of Weight Loss Hypnosis Techniques tailored to the individual requirements, with full back up support. One is a completely new procedure, and both have been proven to work. THE FAST TRACK 30 MINUTE WEIGHT CONTROL SESSION Incredibly successful since the start of my practice nearly 30 years ago and proven many times by the media, this unique 30 minute session revolves around completely transforming the way you think about food and boosting your self-belief: You can steer clear of chocolate bars without it feeling like a punishment. You will cease viewing fruits, vegetables and so-called healthy foods with cynical eyes.
You will be able to stick to your diet. This highly successful method changes the way you view ‘appetite’ and ‘hunger’- yes, there is a difference. Appetite is all in the mind and is habit formed. Hunger is an actual message sent from the stomach to the brain. The Fast Track Weight Control Session revolves around rebalancing the scales. For those of you who feel you need the extra push, the Gastro Band is an effective way to lose weight: healthily. “My sister and my daughter have lost 2½ stone (15.8 kilos) between them in two weeks: I have lost 5lbs (2.3 kilos). Mine will take longer because I am disabled and can’t really exercise. We have no urge to eat sweet stuff and do not feel as hungry. Thank you Alan.... Geraldine.” I now also offer clients a completely new method: THE HYPNOTIC GASTRIC BAND The Gastro Band is a technique I have created which copies the Gastric Band procedure. Newspapers have taken pride in outing celebrities who have undertaken a real Gastric Band bypass to lose weight. Big names have lost huge amounts of weight with the procedure and the general public has also started to show an interest. The gastric band reduces the size of the stomach, so not only can far less food settle in the stomach, patients feel fuller for longer, because the stomach continues to send ‘I’m full’ messages to the brain. The Gastro Band 30 MINUTE Hypnosis Session works on the same premise but only in the mind! During the thirty minute procedure, clients are taken through gastric band surgery but without the pain and discomfort of a real operation. The technique
convinces the brain that you have a gastric band fitted- only without the surgery. You’ll actually believe a band encircles your stomach and feel the benefits of it accordingly. By feeling fuller for longer and requiring less food you’ll naturally lose weight. This is no fad diet: if you put less in, you’ll weigh less on the scales! And if you combine this with a healthy eating programme and a fitness regime, a slimmer you is definitely on its way! Hypnosis is a powerful tool, often underestimated. The mind is capable of incredible things - it’s just a matter of believing in it. In my career, I’ve treated over fifty thousand people and on my website you can find hundreds of testimonials about weight loss which back up my words. Fast Track Hypnosis and those lessons learned within a 30 minute session become a part and parcel of your daily life. And all without you even having to really think about it! Fast Track Hypnosis takes the good from the conventional methods of hypnotherapy and speeds it up, changing your life and the way you view the world! Alan and his son Jonathan hold their Fast Track Hypnosis sessions in Cabo Roig, Guardarmar, Benidorm and now Fortuna. Alan is also the Creator of the Stop Smoking in Under 30 minutes Fast Track System, featured and proven on TV. Jonathan also does sessions in Spanish as well as English. RTN - the height of fashion OLD COPIES of RTN became an eye-catching fashion range when turned into children’s clothes and modelled by the younger members of the Huntley family. by Jack Troughton THE FUN and innovative use of the newspaper scooped first prize in the picture competition to mark RTN’s 700th edition – and put a smile on the faces of the judges. Kerry Huntley and 11-year-old daughter Maia spent a happy day folding and stapling the pages together to make the clothes before a photo shoot in their Javea home featuring Maia, her brother Jude, 8, and fouryear-old sister Macy. “My husband was reading through the paper and said it looked like a good competition to enter and why not make clothes, because our daughter Maia wants to be a fashion designer. “She was actually off school – she is in her last year at Arenal School – with flu so we spent a few hours making the clothes.” Kerry said the pages were carefully cut and folded but were not particularly comfortable for the children to wear. MOVE “I had to ask them to stand still while I quickly took
the photographs – and tell them not to move while I checked the pictures. It is not easy getting a four-yearold to stay in one place for long,” she said. “It was really good fun and in fact Macy liked her tutu so much she wanted to keep it on. I’m afraid it didn’t last very long and all the clothes ended up scrunched up and in the bin.” However, while the paper clothes not are admittedly too good on wear and tear, the concept has won the Huntleys a week’s stay in a luxury villa in Altea for up to 10 people. Second prize winner was RTN reader Peter Holmes who soaks the paper in water before compressing it into paper bricks for his log burner. “Mixed with wood, the bricks burn slowly and it is a good way of saving money from something that is free,” he said – the idea winning a Granada trip courtesy of Gandia Tours. And Jeff Wincott wins a 100€ voucher to spend at department store El Corte Ingles. He employs old copies of RTN in his building work. “It saves on cement when ‘blanking off’ bricks.”

Watts In Britain By
Paul Watts
Tubby Tamworth is top of the slobs LAST WEEK my friend Andy phoned to gloat with the news that Tamworth had been reported on the radio as the ‘fatty’ capital of Britain. Apparently, some journalist had written a piece that claimed one-in-three of us up here are porkers. As RTN’s fattest Tamworth correspondent I needed to know more… And so it was I discovered that Sarah Boseley, a ‘churnalist’ for The Guardian, had written that Tamworth “has been trying to shake off the less welcome title of fattest town in Britain.” Fattest town in Britain? What utter nonsense. I call Sarah a ‘churnalist’ because all she seems to have done is churn up and regurgitate old figures and stats without the slightest fact-checking at all. Is it not incumbent on every journalist to check all factual assertions? “Yes it is Watts!” I hear you say. Okay then, here are some of Sarah’s facts: “Just over 30% of people in Tamworth are obese, according to the National Obesity Observatory. By 2050, warned the... Foresight report of 2007, the UK could hit 60% adult obesity if nothing is done [and] Tamworth is halfway there.” Sarah adds, “To the visitor, the girth of Tamworth’s inhabitants is noticeably large. The nearly one in three who are technically obese are not hard to spot.” Now hang on a minute Sarah, have you been here? Look folks, I’m here to report that as you wander around the town centre you’d be hard pressed to notice any difference in the populace to any other town in the UK - Sarah’s so-called fatties are just not apparent. But why let that ruin a good story, eh? Oh no, Sarah’s got some figures off the Internet and she needs to complete 1,000 words by the morning so bugger factchecking, let’s go with this… Following Sarah’s tirade of tubby Tamworth another paper decides to have a pop. At least, Joanna Moorhead (writing for that pillar of truth and sanity, the Daily Mail) claims to have visited the town. Joanna
querulously scribes: “The first thing you notice, arriving by train into Tamworth’s unedifying concrete railway station, is the smell of burgers sizzling on the open griddle of a mobile snack bar five steps outside the main entrance door.” Hmmm, well Jo if you walk out of Brighton, Birmingham or Manchester Piccadilly Station you’ll pretty soon be running slap-bang into the smell of a burger van - it ain’t nutthin new. It certainly is not newsworthy. Joanna’s article seems to be fixated with burger outlets. She continues, “Just around the corner the aptly-named Fat Sandwich Company offers sausage baguettes at 99p, while a couple of steps in the other direction there is another mobile takeaway doing a fast trade in hot roast pork sandwiches, complete with gravy and stuffing.” It’s strange that neither churnalist mentioned the miles and miles of cycle-ways that are in daily constant use by cycling tubby-Tammys; or the free-to-use weight training machines in the castle grounds (muscle beach LA, eat your heart out) that are popular with residents of all ages and shapes! In fact I had my first High Intensive Training (HIT) session there last week. (Or did I?) The fatty allegations have given the local rag a bumper news week; the Tamworth Herald has come out all guns blazing. More column
inches than you could shake a stick at have been printed on the subject. The editor is particularly scathing of Sarah’s research: “The figures on which these ridiculous stories are based are six years old! They were calculated using broad demographics, based on deprivation and wealth. No one was interviewed about their lifestyle, no one measured, no one weighed. They do not take into account the huge steps taken since 2007 to improve local people’s health. They ignore the fact that Tamworth is an active place with a proud sporting tradition. They simply provide a stick with which to beat our town, portraying us as the pinnacle of the slob culture…” Oh dear Sarah, you’ve kicked a right old hornets nest. I’m guessing you and Jo will not be getting the freedom of the town anytime soon. Watts in Tamworth, tucking into some tasty teacakes

ROJOS Bar Café offer a big welcome from a little gem by Keith Nicol ROJOS BAR Café is one of La Marina’s little hidden gems in plain view. Located directly opposite Consum, in Consum Square, the café bar was taken over by Shez and Jez in December, when they were offered the opportunity to run the business for themselves. Open six days a week from 11.00am until late, they move to a seven-day schedule from June onwards for the busy influx of tourists, who visit their second homes during the summer months. Rojos is small, charming and has that special personal touch, and in true Cheers style, it’s the sort of place where ‘everyone knows your name.’ The establishment is somewhat Tardis like in that at the rear of the building they have a canopy for dining, which is removed during the summer for romantic outdoor dinning, and they rent the terrace next door, effectively doubling their capacity to be able to cater for upwards of 80 patrons at any
one time. This makes it a perfect setting for small parties, gatherings, clubs and associations, special events and even wedding parties! For special events they can also apply for a special entertainment licence, as long as you book your event about six weeks ahead. They offer a range of typical bar snacks, have a full bar and during the week a number of specials, which include a Sunday Roast dinner, Monday Curry Night and Friday Pie Night, with other daily specials that change regularly plus lots of options for kids and families. When Shez and Jez first took over Rojos, they cancelled their telephone line and then changed their minds but just too late to stop the line being disconnected. They wanted to say a big word of thanks to the RTN Network for rushing to their aid and providing them with a new line and telephone number (966 797 695) within 24-hours which allowed regulars and visitors to book ahead for their ever popular Sunday Roast and also to pro-

By Keith Nicol QUESADA HAVE their own Medieval Market that starts next week. The event will offer a variety of stands, with traders dressed in costume of the time, selling items that are all handcrafted and indicative or having the feel of items that might have been produced in the middle of the last Millennium. The market will also feature games and activities for children and have lots of unusual items for sale from spices to clothing and especially, pottery and items to display around your house, business or possibly something very different as a present for that ‘person who has everything!’ The Market will be held over the Easter period between March 28th - 31st 2013 on the Plaza Blanca in Ciudad Quesada.
vide free wi-fi internet to their customers. Shez and Jaz have plans for many different attractions in the coming months which include table top sales, tarot reading, ladies special pampering days, groups and associations that can meet for lunch, kids days, bouncy castles and they are hoping to organise a Jazz festival in collaboration with two or three other bars in the square, for more summertime fun. Stop into Rojos when you are passing and you’ll feel like you have discovered your home from home, in this little gem in Consum Square.
Wish for a star by Jack Troughton
TWO WEEKS remain for nominations to surprise someone with a little happiness and a dream come true through Grant A Wish. The successful concept is designed to reward someone deserving a treat - and make them a star for a day. Grant A Wish is the brainchild of Continental Wealth Management director Jody Kirkby who aims to put a smile
back on the faces of people by waving her magic wand. On 31st March the judging panel – made up of Grant A Wish partners Continental Wealth Management, foreign exchange experts Moneycorp and RTN – will sit down to award the next wish. The Grant A Wish team has been busy from the outset. A mini wish was granted to Suzy, who enjoyed a day’s pampering at a health and beauty spa after being laid low and contracting

painful shingles over worries about her home – she was nominated by concerned husband Roy. BENEFIT Next to benefit was homeless Steve who via Bay Radio asked if anyone had any plastic sheeting to help him escape the elements – within 12 hours he was rewarded with an all-weather sleeping bag, sheeting and some cash. Another mini wish granted! The first ‘full’ wish was for Nicki who tragically lost her partner John, and was struggling to keep her family together. They were treated to a day out and season tickets for Terra Natura, iPads for the two kids, school books, and the payment of cremation fees that finally saw his ashes returned home. And Christmas saw two brave youngsters nominated by their mums receive computer games, Christmas trees and chocolates delivered by Grant A Wish. As well as granting a wish every quarter, Grant A Wish has also responded to SOS calls to people faced with a sudden emergency and been able to support local charities needing extra help during the recession. Gold diggers flock to Benidorm
METAL DETECTING is becoming more and more popular, with metal hunters from all over Europe visiting Benidorm’s beaches where the sands yield an interesting treasure trove. Enthusiasts regularly turn up cash, not only euros but also pesetas, as well as jewellery, and most say they are not interested in riches but the thrill of the treasure hunt. Metal detectors in headphones are seen daily on the Levante beach walking slowly, anticipating that satisfying buzz that indicates a find. Hobbyists now favour a more comfortable beach environment, preferring to spend a few weeks roaming the sun-warmed sands instead of freezing in a field!

The Electrical Shop celebrate their third birthday By Keith Nicol LIKE IT says on the cover, the Electrical Shop in Blue Lagoon, Orihuela Costa, sell everything electrical and this week celebrated their third birthday. Having been made redundant at the end of 2009, Debbie and a few of her colleagues decided that they would open up their own shop and haven’t looked back. They sell all electrical appliances, tv systems and even air conditioning and even with the hypermarkets opening up, their prices are always competitive. They are your typical high street shop and rely on trade from the local community, word of mouth and repeat business. They give information and advice for free and do their best to help people even if they did not make their original purchase with them. They have technical experts on hand that can help with most problems and they pride ourselves in giving great after sales service. They also try to stock the things that the expatriate community would want to buy. Since opening in 2010, the shop, which is located in the commercial units, just by the roundabout, has gained an excellent reputation for exceptional service. In fact, owner Debbie is a former winner of the Company Women award for Customer Focus and Customer Service as well as being
25
named Company Women’s 2011 Business Woman of the Year; so you know that you are in very good hands! And it is clear as soon as you walk in why those awards were well deserved because you certainly wouldn’t get service like theirs at any large domestic electrical appliance store; and that is the truth! As well as large household appliances, The Electrical Shop has a wide range of TVs, DVD players, and smaller electrical appliances. Debbie and the team will be happy to source any item if they don’t have it in stock and will order it for you to be in the store within a few days. Debbie and her team would like to thank all those people how have bought items from the shop during the last three years and who have supported them and invite you in for a slice of birthday cake (if there is any left!). The store is open Monday to Saturday from 10.00 to 6.00pm and you can contact Debbie on 966 188 169 or 966 188 170. You can also email them at electricalteam@hotmail.com, visit their website at www.electricalteam.eu or their Facebook site at The Electrical Shop. So even if you don’t need anything today, pop in and see what they have on offer and just say ‘hi’ to the friendly staff at The Electrical Shop.

Some useful garden supplies by
Clodagh & Dick Handscombe Holistic gardeners and authors gardening in Spain for 25 years
WE HAVE been asked where various things for the garden can be obtained at recent talks and even being stopped in the street, so we thought it a good idea to share some information. Where can one find out about the availability of allotments for growing vegetables? Answer: Ask at your local town halls. Many are starting up new schemes and often also know about private ventures. Some U3A groups are also thinking about projects. Where can one obtain English style roses? Answer: You can import them from Austin roses or purchase from Marnes Iris Garden, which is off the road from south of Benissa to Los Pinos and Bernia beyond Los Pinos. The gardens open from 1st April until 31st May. However, you can contact Christine Lomer via 065 973 520 or info@iris-lomer.com to arrange earlier purchases as the soil is great for planting after the rains. The Iris Garden also sells many varieties of irises and a few other droughtresistant plants. By the way if you visit the gardens on 1st May we will have a stand for selling books. Where can one obtain neem oil products? Answer: Look for a garden centre which stocks ‘Flower’ products. It can also be purchased from Trabe via www.trabe.net or from Niem Handel in Germany via kontakt@niem-handel.de. Ask for the oil mixed with emulsifier– they understand English well…
WHERE CAN ONE OBTAIN PROPOLIS? Answer: This is a useful natural fungicide. Unfortunately, few garden centres stock it but it will be found in most honey shops and some health shops. It can also be obtained from www. trabe.net based near St. Javier airport. Their main business is supplying large scale organic vegetable and fruit growers but they stock garden sized bottles. As mentioned above they also sell a neem oil product which they call ‘Ain’. Where can one obtain bags of horse manure? Answer: Try your local garden centres. They usually have dried manure that is light to handle. Also visit local stables who charge just a few euros per sack or even supply free if you fill your own sacks. WHERE CAN ONE OBTAIN BAGGED GOAT MANURE? Answer: From agricultural co-operatives. It is good value at 4.5€ to 6€ a large sack. Where can one obtain worm compost? Answer: Some garden centres and agricultural co-operatives. Ask for ‘compost lombrizes’. There is a good supplier on the south side of Oliva who sells direct to callers and by mail order. The name of the producer is Factor Humus. Contact via 671 647 797 or joseserra@factorhumus.com. They are located on Calle de les Mines.
fibre-based product is called Bioconsort. A box which weighs only 5 kilos expands with water to the equivalent of a large-ish bag of garden centre compost. If you are starting a new garden a full pallet load is not expensive. They also sell neem oil. Contact Carmen or Jose Manuel – they both have good English – on 96 471 0233 or info@sojivit.com WHAT CAN ONE USE ON GRAPE VINES AND FORMING GRAPES TO PREVENT FUNGAL ATTACKS THAT IS ECOLOGICAL? Answer: The best thing is to dust your vines now and each month during the spring and summer if the weather is wet and humid with natural yellow sulphur powder. This is
IS THERE A SUPPLIER OF LIGHTWEIGHT POTTING OR GARDEN COMPOST?
The normal bags are so heavy to get into and out of cars and around the garden as one ages? Answer: Yes a company called Sojivit based in Segorbe on the Valencia to Teruel road but who deliver speedily by mail order. Their coco

inexpensive – a couple of euros for a kilo – and will be found in garden centres, agricultural co-operatives and some hardware shops. Ask for ‘azufre’, which is the Spanish name. You can apply this with an old sock, a plastic shaker or with a small mechanical duster. ARE WE DOING A BOOK SIGNING AND QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSION SOON? Answer: Yes on Thursday 4th April from 11am until 3pm at the Quick Save store on the N332 going north near Pedrequer. Since Bookworld in the Ondara Eroski Shopping Centre closed Quick Save is effectively the local stockist of our gardening books. Secondly on the1st May at the Marnes Iris Garden.

Asset declaration? Spanish compliant? Now what? AS IF Ex-Pats in Spain did not have enough to worry about with regards to investments they may now find themselves with unexpected bills from Financial Advisers in the UK with whom they originally invested their money.
YOU MAY have thought that the upfront commissions already paid when initially investing was sufficient and many Advisers were happy to operate this way, but since the turn of the year IFAs in the UK are now compelled to charge clients for time spent administering as they can no longer work off the commissions received from new investments – excellent for new investors but not for those who have already paid. An article @ FT.com 10/02/2013 quotes: “Research done by Allianz Global Investors found 86% of UK Advisers plan to charge between £100 and £200 per hour for their services.”
If you are fiscal resident in Spain then you should not really have a UK-based adviser as they do not know the Spanish tax rules or how the tax regime works here, but since the Asset Declaration requirement I have been astonished to the amount of people that still have UK Advisers, even worseinvestments in Bonds that were set up in the UK and are now not Spanish compliant. To compound the misery the investments are not reviewed and just left in what might not be performing as well as they should as contact with the Financial Adviser is difficult. All this and you might find yourself with extra bills for their time
spent arranging statements or speaking to you via email or on the phone. The good news is you can do something about it. Most large companies will allow you to simply complete a ‘change of adviser request’ so that a qualified adviser based in Spain looks after your investments without any additional administration costs. At the same time the Adviser can review your Investments and make sure they are still tax efficient and performing as you would like on a regular basis. If you need advice or if have any questions regarding the above you can contact me on 657 684 094 or email keith.littlewood@blacktowerfm.com
The above information was correct at the time of preparation and does not constitute investment advice and you should seek advice from a professional adviser before embarking on any financial planning activity. Petition of modification of custody due to a breach of the visitation regime agreed in a divorce MY WIFE and I divorced in Spain under the English law of our nationality. She has the custody of our young children ( minors), and they live in Spain. I live in England. My wife does not comply with the visitation regime and she does not let me talk on the phone, or be with my children on the vacation periods which correspond to me in summer, Christmas, etc. Could I ask for a custody modification, and get a court order which changes the custody and get my children to live with me in the UK, because she does not meet the divorce decree and she does not let them stay or me contact them? Dear reader, thank you for your inquiry. In principle, the answer must be YES, because the Spanish Civil Jurisdiction Law, in its Article 776.3, states: “The repeated
breach of the obligations arising from visitation regimen by both, the parent with the custody or the non custodial, may lead to a modification of custody and visitation by the Courts “. Therefore, if the custodial parent, in your case the mother, with whom the children live refuses to comply with the visitation agreement included on the divorce court order, you could ask and could get a new Court Order modifying the existing guardianship and custody resolution, and it is possible for the custody to be awarded to you, and to get the minors to live with you. Although this article foresees such a possibility, it is not automatic. In family law, when minors are involved, the most important principle to be respected is the Protection of the Child’s Interests. In your case, in our view, in order to get a Court Ruling authorizing the modification
of the custody, you will need to prove, not only that the mother is not allowing you to communicate or to be with them, but also, that taking into account their interests and rights to see, communicate and be with their father, the best for them, would be a change of the custody in your favour. This could be complicated, if the children have been living for long time with the mother and they are integrated into the Spanish culture, school, etc., because the custody change, in your case, would need the children to move to live in United Kingdom, and may not be in their best interest. Each case must be studied in detail before advice can be given. If you are in the same or similar situation, we can assist you. Spain is an important European centre for money laundering in 2012 says US ACCORDING TO the United States, Spain was one of Europe’s main centres for money laundering throughout Europe in 2012. The International Strategy for Narcotics Control released a statement on Wednesday based on information from the State Department that claims the majority of money laundering activities in Spain link with drug trafficking; organised crime; terrorist financing and tax evasion. US officials cite the particular example of ‘Operation Emperor’, the dismantled multi-million euro organised crime network headed by Chinese businessman Gao Ping. The report also notes that in 2012 Spain remained an ‘important gateway’ for drug running from Europe to Central America, South America and North Africa.

Milton Express Services: the perfect solution MILTON EXPRESS receives enquires every week from potential clients interested to learn more about Sporting Arbitrage and Winning Express. Current clients already benefit from an arbitrage trading facility, regularly providing 2.75% monthly returns. Milton Express actually market a sports advisory service that pays significantly higher returns – but with a degree of volatility. Members will not only benefit from the services themselves, Winning Express offers a home-based business opportunity with the potential to earn generous commissions by promoting the services to others. This week, some FAQ’s will help with your queries: Q: WHAT IS THE MINIMUM AMOUNT A MEMBER CAN INVEST IN WINNING EXPRESS? Simple answer: NIL. The mission statement makes clear that the purpose of Winning Express is to provide its members with tax free returns, along with an earnings opportunity, and a sense of enjoyment in simply belonging to a club that’s dedicated to our mutual success. Q: SO SOMEONE CAN JOIN WINNING EXPRESS AND SIMPLY SELL THE SERVICES TO OTHERS? Exactly right. It is a business opportunity, pure and simple. Q: AND HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO JOIN? For the full services the cost will be £325 per quarter, but there is an initial trial period that costs just £99 Q: SO, DO THEY HAVE A RESTRICTED SERVICE INITIALLY? No, quite the reverse – they receive the FULL services immediately PLUS the ability to earn introductory commissions straightaway. Q: AND WHAT ARE THE FULL SERVICES? A combination of features including access to the arbitrage facility, sports betting advices and various competitions and prize draws. Q: WHAT IS THE EARNING POTENTIAL? It’s genuinely unlimited. We pay out up to 75% of membership fees back in introductory commissions in a structure that runs eight levels deep. Sponsoring three people covers your initial outlay. And if that process continues through eight levels then a six figure residual income is achieved. Q: HOW DO MEMBERS RECEIVE THEIR COMMISSIONS? Through their own Winning Express website and they can draw their income weekly. Q: WHY DO YOU STATE RETURNS ARE TAX FREE? All profits are derived either from Betting Exchanges or bookmakers and Betting Tax was abolished at the turn of the millennium. Commissions are of course another matter, and should be regarded as earnings. Q: THE ARBITRAGE FACILITY – HOW DOES THAT WORK? Arbitrage has been around for thousands of years; traditionally the preserve of banks, financial institutions and the very wealthy. It’s the purchase/sale of a commodity with a built in profit. Our traders engage in backing horses or football teams at a higher price than they can lay. If we bet at a higher price than we lay, then although we may not necessarily win we cannot possibly lose. Q: YOU QUOTE A RETURN OF 2.75% MONTHLY – IS THAT GUARANTEED? No. The estimated return is geared to the
amount of completed, positive trades in any one month. We concentrate on the first three horses in each market – if one of those three win the race then it’s a positive trade, should another horse win then we have a neutral trade. Q: SOME PEOPLE MAY SAY THE RETURN SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE? Of course: people are conditioned in that manner. The fact, however, is that the advent of the Betting Exchanges (Betfair predominantly) in 2001 heralded an unprecedented opportunity for traders to engage in arbitrage activity via the biggest industry on the internet. Skilled, experienced traders make markedly higher returns than the figure we quote – however, they not only have access to significant funds, they also invest in extremely sophisticated state-of-the-art software. Crucially too, they spend many hours each day glued to computer screens. Q: DO YOU FORSEE THE 2.75% ALWAYS BEING AVAILABLE? We have to be realistic. This is first and foremost a business opportunity, and we are providing people with a genuine opportunity to build a huge residual income through building a team. As the network expands, then capacity will eventually become an issue – we have already indicated to members that there is likely to be a reduction in rates in the Autumn. BUT, the arbitrage facility will always offer members returns way above what’s available in the high street. Q: AND WHAT ABOUT THE SPORTS ADVICES? Over a protracted period, we would expect this facility to outperform the arbitrage although we do stress its volatility. If someone is requiring a monthly income then arbitrage would be the better option whereas for capital growth we’d recommend the sports advices. Q: YOUR ADVERTS AND YOUR WEBSITE REFER TO A ‘MANAGED SERVICE’ – WHAT IS MEANT BY THAT? When we advise involvement in a football fixture or suchlike we quote the best prices available and name the firms that are offering them. For those members who for whatever reason cannot find the time to enact the transaction themselves, we offer the managed service. In other words we place the bet on their behalf and we retain 10% of profits as an administration charge. Q: And can ‘managed’ service clients access the progress of their activity? Yes, 24/7 via their own username and password. Our results are updated daily. Again, it’s not a facility we actively promote – it’s something we introduced for those who otherwise would in all probability miss out For further information on our services and how to join Winning Express contact the Milton Express Office, La Zenia on 96 599 4815. Proving your property is legal by
Suzanne O’Connell Customer Care at Ábaco
QUESTION: WHEN is a first occupancy certificate replaced by a habitation certificate? ANSWER: WHEN you sell your Spanish property. Every new property in Spain must be issued with a first occupancy certificate or ‘Licencia de Primera Ocupación’. This certificate demonstrates that the property developer has met all obligations and the property is legal. The property developer has to not only ensure that the property is fit for purpose but also ensure that any wider obligations have been met such as making good the infrastructure around it or repairing any damage that might have been caused during the building process. Only when the town hall is satisfied that all is complete will a first occupancy certificate be issued. You need this certificate to prove that the property is legal and built according to the original plan submitted. It is required for the connection of mains services such as electricity and water. Without it, your property will remain on the builder’s supply. It is very important that if you do buy a new property you make sure you receive a first occupancy certificate at the time of the purchase. However, it’s not just important for the first occupier. When you come to sell your home, the new purchasers will also want to see that the property was given an
occupancy certificate. Once in possession the new owner will then need to apply for a new certificate themselves. This is the point at which it becomes a habitation certificate (Cédula de Habitabilidad). Possession of the habitation certificate means that the new owner can change the name on the utility bills. This is an important transfer of ownership to make if you want to be sure you can change utility contracts when you need to. Once you do have your habitation certificate, the good news is that you don’t need to renew it even though it says it is only valid for five years. It’s not until the property is sold once more that a new one is needed and then it is the new owner’s responsibility to obtain one in their name. They will want to see that you have had one, but it doesn’t need to be brand spanking new. No doubt, there are some people reading this article who are getting a little anxious about whether they’ve got a certificate or not. The good news is if you do need it for some reason, either to sell your property or because you have not changed the name on your utilities, you can obtain one from the town hall. A company such as Ábaco can help, provided of course that your property had that first occupancy certificate to begin with.
Ábaco provide fiscal representation to non-resident and resident Spanish property owners. You can contact us for free advice and information by calling our helpline 96 670 3748 or visiting our website www.abacoadvisers.com

Holiday villas in Javea used as marijuana farms THE CIVIL Guard has arrested seven people and dismantled two marijuana operations being carried out in three rented holiday villas in Javea. At least 550 plants in different stages of growth along with 2,000grams of heroin were seized as part of Operation Borkis II. Electricity meters were tampered with to conceal the amount of energy required to propagate the plants, which could reach a consumption of 15,000€. The suspects were British and aged between 21 and 51. A 53-year-old Spaniard was also taken into custody on suspicion of being a collaborator and providing cover for a number of rented properties, vehicles and other activities.

700th edition

Happy 700th RTN By Jack Troughton THERE’S NOT enough room on a cake to place a candle for each of RTN’s 700 editions but today marks another slice of history for the Costa’s favourite free English newspaper. The very first edition hit the streets back on 14th October 1999 and cost – yes, readers had to pay in the early days - the princely sum of 100 pesetas for the very first Round Town News. Times change and now RTN is free and unique in having three separate editions keeping everyone up to date with local, regional, national and international news. The Costa Calida edition – the latest of our three newspapers - was successfully launched last autumn and people in that part of the world were delighted in being able to enjoy dedicated news pages while businesses had a new quality vehicle in which to advertise. Along the way Round Town News was re-launched as RTN, a modern colourful newspaper, but it has always sought to serve both the community and its loyal readers and advertisers. STRENGTH And the RTN website goes from strength to strength with over 100,000 visitors every month. All of the weekly content of the newspaper is available to read online and it can be accessed from anywhere in the world – keeping everyone in touch. Website users can even interact by leaving their comments on all the articles, creating a feeling of a real online community. The popular virtual newspaper currently has more than 8,500 subscribers who receive RTN in this format every Friday morning along with their weekly newsletter, and we also very active on Facebook and Twitter - we feel that it is important to reach as many people as possible using Social Media. RTN is also a successful media brand. State of the art telecommunications communication company RTN Network has been a huge success. Not only does it provide a highly competitively priced way of keeping in touch with the rest of the world, customers can enjoy ADSL, British television channels and even free calls across Europe. We also offer the Design and Print Studio, a one-stop shop
for everyone’s printing and design needs for both business and private needs. It is seen as a ‘hassle free’ service and things can be organised over the ‘phone bringing high quality results at a truly exceptional price. RTN is printed by Servicios de Impresion de Levante SA, one of Spain’s biggest publishing houses, and it has been responsible for printing every one of the 700 editions. Because it is such a big company, both RTN and our readers can be confident – short of a disaster – the paper will be delivered every week. HEART Head office is in La Nucia and is home to the heart of every
RTN owner Geoff Gartland with the paper’s three editions
newspaper, the newsdesk. While our journalists are out and about covering the stories that make news, the ‘phone is frequently ringing off the hook as people call with tip-offs or to ask for our help – helping us keep a finger on the pulse of what is going on. And if the busy editorial team provides the lifeblood, the professional and experienced 11-strong sales team is the engine room of RTN, a free newspaper relies on advertising sales for its own income. Out in the field there are sales representatives bring face to face expertise with a strong and demanding client base, while head office is also home to telesales staff dealing with classified adverts and specialists selling to a growing Spanish market. RTN also has reps dealing directly with the important accounts of corporate clients and specialist advertising agencies representing these international customers. The RTN family is now looking forward to celebrating its 800th edition milestone with its readers and advertisers – but first, the little matter of edition 701.
Rocket powered RTN By Jack Troughton THE REAL success of RTN began when it became a free newspaper and became an overnight sensation that continues to allow the newspaper to grow. Managing director and owner Geoff Gartland took over at edition 95 and has seen many changes as the paper has evolved over 12 years. He took the decision to become a ‘freebie’ after the Costa Blanca’s long-standing Entertainer – the coast’s established free newspaper – disappeared “literally overnight”. Until the switch, Round Town News was selling a respectable 2,000 to 3,000 copies a week but Geoff saw an immediate opportunity. “It took off like a rocket. The first week we were free, I think we put 6,000 copies out – I think by the 12th week there were 25,000 copies. It just blew up, it was incredible, there was suddenly this huge demand.” The current print run is 50,000 but can be increased at the touch of a button. At the time the market was buoyant and there were dozens of new businesses starting up all wanting to reach an established market of expats.
HUGE At one stage RTN was a huge 128 pages. It may have slimmed down as a sign of the times but the newspaper team is still producing 100 different pages each week across the three editions. Geoff said RTN worked like a “well-oiled machine” with a solid and experienced team. “On Fridays when the paper is out we are already planning our next edition, it is 24/7.” However, at the centre of the paper’s success was its readership. Geoff said: “We love our readers. I think we have built up something special, an exceptionally loyal band of readers. “We have always tried to focus on people - turn to any page in the paper and there are real people who live here in Spain staring back at you. “Someone said to me once that RTN was the bridge between the British community and the Spanish community – it allows people to see what is happening in their area, people who perhaps don’t speak Spanish and need to see what is going on around them.” SUCCESS He added advertisers were just as important to the paper. “They form part of RTN and its success. We work closely with them.” And Geoff underlined how reaching edition 700. Almost against the odds in the current climate, was such a milestone.
Geoff and the historic first edition
“When you look throughout the world the number of newspapers that have vanished, RTN is still going strong and still producing three editions in this difficult climate – we launched our third edition despite the recession.” He still believes there is room and demand for the continued growth of RTN as a highly successful product. “I think we can expand and produce another edition. “I would like to think we can still move forward whilst maintaining the quality of what we have achieved. The world would be a far worse place without RTN.”

RTN goes to Granada!
RECENTLY RTN had the pleasure of joining Gandia Tours on their San Valentine three-day excursion to Granada. by RTN Editor THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING team in Moraira arranged a local pick up point by Tour Guide Rolf and coach driver Pepe. The coach was spotlessly clean, spacious and with reclining seats. Rolf described the journey ahead which included some additional stops to pick up more guests (Gandia Tours have pick up points all along the Costa Blanca) followed by a coffee break and then further in the day, a lunch stop. Lunch and coffee enabled everyone to become better acquainted, making us all feel refreshed and relaxed as we journeyed through scenic Murcia, also known as the Huerta de Espana (Garden of Spain) due to its abundant crops. Pepe and Rolf
Rolf, from Munich, spoke perfect English and has worked for Gandia Tours since 1982. His son, Stefan, also works for the company in their Moraira branch - he had just returned from training in Barcelona so he was able to help any clients thinking of taking an excursion there. Rolf’s knowledge of the route was excellent: he pointed out specific landmarks, speaking to each guest individually, providing guides, maps and details of additional Gandia Tours excursions. Mid-afternoon we arrived at the four-star Hotel Alixares, helped at the check in by Rolf. After a brief visit to our room with its wonderful views of the Alhambra Palace, we headed out.
The Alhambra Palace and Sierra Nevada seen from the area of Albaycin
The hotel is just five minutes’ walk to the Alhambra Palace and a 10 minute downhill walk to the centre, or there is a regular bus. No words or pictures can justify the beauty of the Alhambra Palace, though one guest perfectly described the gardens as “heavenly.” A visit here should be on everyone’s bucket list! Granada is full of charm and character with beautiful architecture and narrow winding streets full of gifts with an Arabian flavour. The cathedral with its stunning interior is in the heart of the city. A day could be spent just browsing … numerous plazas brimming with bars and restaurants and tourists soaking up the atmosphere and glorious sunshine… Within easy reach of the hotel and the centre of Granada is the area of Albaycin the historical and ancient Arab quarter high above the city. The views are breathtaking - from the Plaza San Nicholas the famous view of the Alahambra Palace shimmers against the backdrop of the snow-covered Sierra Nevada. A winding walk downward takes you to the picturesque river walkway and into the centre of town. The hotel accommodation is on a half board basis with a buffet breakfast and on Valentines night a romantic ‘San Valentine’s’ meal was exclusively arranged by Gandia Tours. Located in a separate function room, the room was decorated with balloons: each table was candlelit, with a rose for your Valentine. Canapés and cava greeted us and we were seated at beautifully laid tables. The four course meal was a triumph, accompanied by wine, cava and finished with coffee. Soft music played in the background during the dinner, followed by a disco playing all the romantic classics. This gave all the couples a chance to show off their dancing skills and enjoy the party atmosphere with their travelling companions. On the last day the coach left early afternoon, giving guests
some free time to Granada. One couple hired a taxi driver to take them through the Albaycin area. They paid a very reasonable 20€ per hour and said the information given was interesting and highly recommended. Guests enjoyed a well-deserved sleep on the journey home or reminisced over the wonderful time they had spent in Granada, where the personal and friendly service of both Gandia Tours and the Hotel Alixares made an enjoyable excursion outstanding. To find out more call 966 106 872: Gandia Tours offices are open Monday to Friday between 9.30am and 1.30pm and again from 4pm to 7.30pm.

Plagued with ‘Delta Search’
HI AUNTY: I am plagued with ‘Delta Search’ which has suddenly materialised when I open Google. I have run my AVG and Spybot which does not identify it. It’s annoying and I am advised it’s an aggressive marketing ploy which can track my details. How do I get rid of it please? Mike
Aunty says: 1. In Chrome Go to “control panel”, “add remove programs”. If Delta Search shows there click “remove”. 2. Click the Chrome menu button on the browser toolbar, select Tools and then click on Extensions. In the Extensions tab, remove (by clicking on the Recycle Bin) the Delta Toolbar, Mixi.DJ and Yontoo extensions from your Google Chrome.
3. Click the Chrome menu button, then select Settings and click on Manage search engines in the Search section. In the Search Engines dialog that appears, select Google and click the Make Default button that appears in the row. Search for Delta Search in the Search Engines list, and click the X that appears at the end of the row. 4. If Delta Search has modified your Google settings to open their webpage whenever you start your browser we will need to revert this change: Click the Chrome menu button, then select Settings and click on ‘One’ the New Tab page in the On Startup section. 5. Download, install, update, run a full scan using your anitvirus and antmalwarebytes so make sure other traces of it are removed.

Photo´s don´t open DEAR AUNTY: I recently bought a new Windows 8 new laptop and have been saving my documents and pictures. They open on my email but when I save them they will not open. Please can you help me? May Aunty says: If you are saving the documents to your PC, and not able to open them, then it will be because you do not have the required program to open the files installed on your PC. For example, if you want to open a PDF file, then you will need a PDF Reader installed, like Adobe Reader.
However, in Windows 8 - Photos app is the default program which shows photos by default in full screen. If you want to always view photos on desktop with Windows Photo Viewer instead of Photos app, it’s just simple as setting the program you want as default one to view pictures. To set Windows Photo Viewer on Windows 8 as default program to open photos
default, double click on ‘default programs‘ 2. In Set Default programs window select Windows Photo Viewer on left-side and click set this program as default, click Ok button.
1. Click on Windows key, start typing
Getting rid of AVG HI AUNTY: Read your recent article on increasing PC speed with interest and attempted to uninstall AVG as suggested. However, I have been unable to do this and receive the following message: ‘Set up error. The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it’. I have installed Microsoft Essentials as you advised and this seems to be working fine. Many thanks, Brian Aunty says: Usually this means that something was not correct with the actual installation of AVG in the first place, and a file or two has become corrupted. Luckily AVG provide a number of tools to help with such things. Have a look at: http://www.avg.com/gb-en/utilities and you will see two ‘AVG Removal tools’: a 32bit and a 64 bit version. Which you use will be determined by which version of Windows you use - available via the System Options in Control Panel. Save all work you have open, Download, install, run and follow the instructions and it should remove all traces of AVG. Response: Thanks for the good advice. Job done!
Gadget Inspector Investigates:
Microsoft Wireless Comfort Desktop 5000 Set THIS WEEK the Inspector takes a look at the Microsoft Wireless Comfort Desktop 5000 Keyboard and Mouse Set. But it’s just a boring old keyboard and mouse right? What’s wrong with my good old keyboard and mouse with all those lovely tangly annoying cables that don´t quite reach and sticking keys? Nothing - if you’re happy doing things this way for 100% of the time you’re using your PC… So what´s new about this combo? Well, the keyboard is designed to allow comfortable typing with low-profile Quiet Touch keys which combine with the sloping palm rest and removable feet to create a slope for better wrist posture. The keyboard also features an ergonomist-approved Comfort Curve Design which further enhances natural wrist posture. If you’re used to a conventional keyboard this feels a little strange at first, but you’ll soon get used to it and it is definitely easier and more comfortable to use. The keyboard is configured with UK keys so no need to work out the Spanish hieroglyphics. The mouse is no slouch in the advanced technology department either. Featuring Microsoft’s proprietary BlueTrack Technology it works in more places than both optical and laser mice. BlueTrack Technology achieves this by using a wider and more uniform light beam and a better contrasting mechanism that allows the mouse to work on
many different surfaces including granite, carpet and wood – it’ll even work on your mouse mat! Connection to your desktop/laptop PC is handled by the wireless USB transceiver unit. Just plug the unit into your PC and you’re good to go with up to a 30-foot range. The set also features Taskbar Favorites for Windows 7 hot keys which allow you to easily launch programs in the taskbar. In addition there is a Windows Flip in Windows 7 function which will switch between open windows with the click of a button. Standard functions such as music player controls, volume and zoom are also provided. The Microsoft Wireless Comfort Desktop 5000 Keyboard and Mouse Set is compatible with Windows 7/Windows Vista/Windows XP (excluding XP 64-bit) and Mac OS X v10.4 –10.5.x. The set requires 1 AA
alkaline battery which is included. The Inspectors Verdict: If you’re looking to drag your computer interaction into the 21st Century you’ll love the Microsoft Wireless Comfort Desktop 5000 Keyboard and Mouse Set. Comfortable and easy to use, whether it be with Desktop or Laptop PC, this will do the trick for you, at least until they invent mind control for the PC… Please note the following is for information and is not intended as an advertisement - visit www.gadgethound.co.uk/microsoft-desktop-set to purchase the Microsoft Wireless Comfort Desktop 5000 Keyboard and Mouse Set for 49€. It’s a Shameless Shame!
I WAS watching Mock of the Week last Sunday evening and was treated to Frankie Boyle waxing lyrical in that very Scottish way of his with the ‘f’ word popping into every sentence, and when out of shot he was clearly heard tagging ‘off’ on the end to ‘Mock’ one of the other guests. Don’t get me wrong I am far from a prude: the question I want to ask however is … is it the same for everyone? I got to this thought after reading about the plight of ‘Shameless’, a programme that won ‘Best Drama’ Bafta, and incredibly the ‘Best Comedy Drama’ at the British Comedy Awards in only its second series in 2005. Last year, at its peak, the show was stopped, and now it’s come out that Ch4 have agreed to do one more series and that filming began three weeks ago. Co-writer and the show’s main actor Paul Abbot was
interviewed by The Telegraph last week and it droned on about the awards he’s won and the new show he’s writing for Ch4, but as is so often the case, it’s was what he said right at the end that was the most interesting. Genuine writers like Paul Abbot struggle with their need to tell it exactly like it is, and with him saying: “I remember when a TV commissioner said that the world was too complicated and vicious so we ought to offer TV audiences palliative drama … and I said … if I offer people palliative drama, they’ll know I’m lying to them.” In my opinion these are the words of a man who wanted to move ‘Shameless’ up a notch or two and Ch4 said no! Yes folks, censorship continues to deprive us of true art.
Bye-bye beebie telly centre!
IT HAS been well documented that the BBC TV Centre will close its doors for the last time later on this month, and it was announced last Thursday that Madness are to do a live gig in the car park of the iconic West London building next Friday evening March 22nd. The show will be screened on BBC4 as part of a fond farewell to a place the boys know ever so well, something that was confirmed when they said: “We’re honoured to be part of the farewell celebrations of a building that’s so close to our hearts … as a band we grew up there … those walls have plenty Madness tales to tell …” Whatever can they mean? The two-hour TV Special called ‘Goodbye TV Centre’ will feature, amongst others, BBC giants of their time, Terry Wogan, Philip Schofield, Ronnie Corbett and David Jason, and will be showing some of the building’s most memorable moments … like BBC 2’s launch night being blacked out by a power cut … and we’ll also get a close up look at the studios used to film some of the corporation’s best-loved shows, including Only Fools And Horses. Being a big sports fan my personal memory comes from the first time I saw that impressively curve-fronted building when Grandstand came on, on a Saturday afternoon, and although it promises to be an enjoyable show next Friday, it is sad to know that such an innovative design should fall to the curse of the greed mongers who disguise themselves as inner city developers.
‘Fifty shades going all the way JUST A wee one to close, but big in every other sense… I read last week that the word around the movie business is that the film version of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ will not be pulling any punches, with an insider saying, “The script will definitely keep in all the kink that made the novels.” … Aha! … I see I´ve got your attention... From one week to another actor after actor has been linked to the film, and now that Universal Pictures Chairman Adam Fogelson has described ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ as an ‘absolute priority’ the heat is on in every sense of the word. With that having been said, you can only imagine the pushing and shoving that’s going on in and around Hollywood. Chairman Fogelson also confirmed that ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ will be a three-movie deal, offering a flick-fest of quite some proportions should you so desire. However, you will be able to get into training as its gonna be more than year before the first one is released … Boo-hoo-oo!

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
Step by Step Spanish -23 I THINK I may have dropped into the conversation at some point that we have actually now started studying the subjunctive. Believe me this is no small thing. IF EVER you want to get out of a social situation and make people dislike you, all you have to say is “I’m studying the subjunctive at the moment”. You can kill a conversation dead in a matter of seconds and never be invited again! You don’t need to tell them you’re just reading about it in a newspaper article, they’ll never know, and they’ll never dare ask because you will be elevated to the heights of superior learning and understanding. So, as you should have picked up from the previous two articles, the formation of the present subjunctive is based on the first person singular of the present tense. There is a fair bit more to explain about this but the formation isn’t our biggest problem. There are six irregular verbs so I might as well tell you what those are straight away to get them over with. They are: estar (esté); ir (vaya); ser (sea); haber (haya); saber (sepa); and dar (dé). However, that is not likely to mean anything at all to you if you don’t actually know what the subjunctive is in the first place. So, here is an attempt at explaining the unexplainable. We use the subjunctive in Spanish to talk about things that are in some why hypothetical rather than real. If I say “I hope” something or “I suppose” something; if I what to express ideas such as “whenever” and “whatever”; things that may or may not have any actual existence, I need to use the subjunctive. If I insist on your doing something but don’t really know whether you are going to do it or not, I need the subjunctive. Perhaps the best thing now is to
look at some actual examples of the above. The subjunctive verbs are printed in bold: “Espero que estés bien” - (I hope that you are well). I don’t know if you are well or not, I am simply expressing my hope that you are. “Supongo que el concierto sea a las ocho” (I suppose the concert is at eight o’clock). I don’t know for sure and am expressing my supposition. “Hablaremos cuando termines el trabajo” (We’ll speak when you finish the job). I know you’ll finish it, but I don’t know exactly when. “Insisto en que me digas la verdad” (I insist that you tell me the truth). I can insist all I like, but you still might not tell me the truth. At this stage I have probably raised more questions than given answers. There is still quite a lot to cover. We need to see how verbs conjugate in the present subjunctive and we need to understand a lot more clearly when we should use them. What we have done so far is have a quick overview of a subject that is one of the hardest things for us to grasp in Spanish, simply because there is no real equivalent to all of this in English. More to come next week, if you can possibly wait that long.

Danny Collins - copy@dannyjpcollins.com
Round The Bend JEREMY CLARKSON is an irreverent car review columnist. He’s also one of the funniest in a world where humour isn’t always the key issue. HE CAN crack a wicked metaphor at anyone’s expense – and quite often does. He laughs at pomposity, himself, other people, and car manufacturers in that order and that doesn’t mean that the greens, the left-wing liberals, and politicians in general escape his scathing wit. His columns always start with a theme completely unconnected with the driving machine he’s reviewing and finally gets to the point after he’s made several others. All are funny, all are dissected with wit and they all make me laugh. That’s why I was delighted to find this book among those sent to me for review. The book is a compendium of 84 reviews previously published in the Sunday Times and each kept me amused enough to read eight or nine at a sitting (That’s sitting on a sofa after lunch with my wife’s legs draped across me – her other half is under a blanket listening to Radio One on her iPod). Anybody who likes cars would love this book, for Clarkson pulls no punches in his criticism of suspension, handling, and oomph. I certainly looked with a different eye at my wife’s humble Ka after reading his review of the Ford Ka Zetec 1.2. Come to that, anybody who appreciates a witty raconteur wouldn’t mind it either.

Life health Varicose veins Amanda Collins, Dip HE Family Medical Centre, Albir
VARICOSE VEINS appear as bulging, sometimes lumpy purple or blue veins which most commonly occur on the calves and insides of the legs.
THEY ARE extremely common with around half of all over 50’s having some degree of the problem, although women are more commonly affected than men HOW VARICOSE VEINS OCCUR Blood is pumped from your heart to the rest of the body via the arteries. The blood is then returned to the heart via the veins, to be re-circulated. However, the veins have a difficult job getting the blood back ‘uphill’ as they have to rely on contraction of the leg muscles to literally squeeze the blood back up to the heart! There are tiny valves within the veins that open to let the blood flow through and then close to stop it from draining back down the leg. As we get older, the veins can stretch and the valves become weak causing blood to ‘pool’ in the veins. This causes the vein to bulge. The blue/purple discolouration is caused by the fact that the blood going back to the heart is deoxygenated. Oxygen turns the blood red again! Apart from being female and over 50, you are also more at risk of
developing varicose veins if you are pregnant, obese, have a family history of varicose veins or spend long periods of time standing or sitting still. In many cases, varicose veins cause no pain or problems and can be ignored. However, sometimes complications may occur VENOUS ULCERS As time passes, fluid builds up in the tissue surrounding the veins due to increased pressure. This causes the skin to thicken and eventually ulcers to form, usually around the ankle area. Ulcers can be painful and take a long time to heal. If you have varicose veins, check regularly for discoloured spots of skin that may be the early stage of an ulcer and see your Doctor at once if you notice anything unusual. BLEEDING Injuries to the affected leg can sometimes cause a varicose vein to bleed. Sometimes the bleeding can be profuse and difficult to stop in which case you will need to seek medical advice. THROMBOPHLEBITIS Thrombophlebitis is caused when a blood clot forms within the vein causing pain,
heat and swelling. If you have symptoms of thrombophlebitis you should see your Doctor. CHRONIC VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY Problems with blood flow can affect the delivery of nutrients and oxygen and the removal of waste products from the skin. The condition is considered chronic if it continues over a long period of time and can lead to the problems below. VARICOSE ECZEMA The affected are of skin can become red and crusty. Blistering is also possible. LIPODERMATOSCLEROSIS The skin may become harder and tight and turn red or brown. Prompt treatment is necessary for the best results. AND THE GOOD NEWS! Modern technology has produced minimally invasive treatments whereby depending on the individual case, it is possible to have a local anaesthetic and return to normal activities within a day. The cosmetic results are also excellent. For more details about these innovative new treatments, have a chat with your practice nurse.

Life recipes Spaghetti with Camembert, Serrano Ham and Pesto THIS IS a truly international dish with French camembert, Spanish jamon serrano and Italian pesto. The result is a wonderful, fresh tasting pasta that has become a regular standby in our house. You could use a ready-made pesto if you want, but if you can find fresh basil, it’s well worth the effort of making your own. • Enough dried spaghetti for two people • 75g camembert cheese, cut into 1cm cubes • 4 thin slices of serrano ham, cut into 1cm strips • 25g parmesan shavings For the pesto • a handful of fresh basil leaves • 1 clove of garlic, peeled • 25g parmesan cheese, finely grated • A small handful of pine nuts • 3-4 tbls olive oil 1. Make the pesto by placing all the ingredients in a blender and mixing to a runny paste. Add a little more oil if necessary. 2. Cook the spaghetti in plenty of boiling salted water until just cooked. Drain and return to the pan with a little olive oil. Add the pesto, camembert and serrano, stir and cover with a lid then leave to stand for a minute or so until the cheese begins to melt. 3. Serve immediately with a the parmesan shavings sprinkled over the top.

Life horoscopes Three events bring conflict of interest, but are safe within your conscious control. Early in the week Mercury ends a retrograde period in a dominant Pisces and the Sun exalts your star sign, then Venus enters too; and sends a powerful message to the Cosmos. This is your time and whatever you do, let no rain fall on your parade.
Venus dallies with Aries and calls the shots as an emotional block stops you well and truly in your tracks. There could be a perfectly good reason for behaving the way you are, but it is quite out of character and the sooner you are back to basics the better….. anything else can and will await your further instructions. Arian domination this week gives you the chance to investigate the smoke and mirrors around a piece of the action you are currently confused about. All does not add up no matter which way you look at things, and it is your mission right now to put things into perspective and then know better what your next step will be. You have made your decision and let there be no thoughts of changing your mind right now that the winds of change are blowing. Resolve means somehow putting back the pieces and you have already made a head start. Trust your judgement above all. Blame any hesitation on the Arian energies abounding this week, and fight them. Take the opportunity to connect with your innermost energies, and maybe that way you will stop fighting issues that do not merit your energies or need your intervention. Let sleeping dogs lie. The defensive energies in the Cosmos could be better used to show you a clear solution to an ongoing long term problem you need to shelve. Follow you heart, and do not listen to the negative comments others are making. You have never been frightened to be yourself, and to stand up for what you feel is right, yet you appear to be at the point whereby you could let go by being easily swayed. Venus enters towards the end of the week to help you help yourself to save the day. Weigh up the pros and the cons and you may very well find it is best to stay silent right now. You know too much, but you cannot find a way to say what it is you really want; even though things are spiralling out of control. Hedging your bets is not a solution, it is an excuse, and a problem shared is a problem solved in this Case. Basking in the positive energy of an Arian force across the Zodiac the saving grace for you this week is the Mercury Direct, in Pisces. Time to tell it like it really is, and with no holds barred. Remember, however, the turmoil surrounding the cessation of any planetary retrograde action, and time your responses accordingly. Boosted by the midweek Spring Equinox and buffered by Venus in cahoots with Aries, prepare for love and war this week! You are in the position currently that anything you say could be taken either way, and somehow this week you have to disappoint someone whatever way you look at it. Gut feelings will prevail! Pluto reacts well this week in protecting your interests and promoting your new intentions. Only you can doubt yourself at this time, and your adventurous side will hopefully take over and see you finding your way through. Have the courage of your convictions and take this as a rare opportunity to have things your way for a change. Boosted by the Mercury Direct and the actions of Venus your calm inner self can make a few plans and boost your confidence, not before time. You may have chosen the short straw as of late, but there comes a good time now to make the most of something and to think and plan something for yourself, you deserve it. Hosting the Mercury Direct midweek you are warned that this will be quite an upheaval, and you may have a few days when all seems to be going wrong, whatever you do. Thankfully the Spring Equinox comes to your rescue, but this is not a time to make any decisions; to sign anything, or to commit to anything at all.

One memorable afternoon a client had asked for a physical sitting to contact her Mother, and I welcomed the opportunity to connect the living with those who have passed over to the other side. I was fortunate to have a room I could black out, and two very comfortable chairs and a table. A dim light was burning on the table and I began by allaying any fears and explaining how the sitting for contact would work. I felt very at home. My client was a little nervous, and I calmed her before starting the connection, explaining that if she was frightened she should leave through the door by which she entered and that I would not hold her back. The sitting began, and I could feel that there was somebody there; however for some reason no picture or dialogue came. I was quietly and patiently more insistent, more persuasive, informing my client to focus and to send love to her Mother. I told Mother that both her daughter and myself were totally unafraid and that this would be a wonderful time to come through if she could. I said repeatedly that we were unafraid and that she would be most welcome. Nothing happened. The fear on the face of my client was evident. I asked her whether we should stop, but that I could feel that someone was so very close and that this would be a shame. My client asked if she could go to the bathroom, and so this she did. As soon as daughter was out of the room it happened. Firstly a weak smell of ether, and then a gentle mist as a pair of feet were shown to me. Ankles followed and legs followed that, and then the whole body slowly revealed to me. Hands neatly folded, patterned dress and then

If it’s your birthday this week
everything stopped travelling upwards, and I just couldn’t see the face. I struggled to see the face but something was in the way. It was a pillow. Mother was showing me that she was suffocated with a pillow. The calmness and the peace around this startling revelation was amazing. This couldn’t have been someone who died in the terror of murder, surely. Mother spoke. She had asked to end her life because she couldn’t go on anymore. There was a lot of pain, and Mother wanted out. She asked to be relieved and said it was time for her to make her longest journey. Not very much else was said because daughter came back from the bathroom and Mother disappeared a little quicker than she arrived, but this time downwards leaving momentary feet, which in turn de- materialised just as daughter sat down. My client immediately commented that she could smell her Mother’s favourite scent, and I experienced a floral scent slightly overpowering and wafting gently over the room. But what should I do? Should I say anything? I had witnessed a very touching passing born by love, compassion and practicality, not hatred, greed and terror. What should I say? Well, needing to have a closer version of the truth, I told the story, explained what had happened, said I was not there to judge and that such action was a supreme act of kindness. Daughter cried in a way I have never seen before. We sat together for a couple of hours all the time feeling the energy sent from the Spirit World. It was a very beautiful and moving time of sharing and caring together. I know who held the pillow, as do you. I cannot say. I would have just loved to have seen the face behind the pillow though; I bet you it had the biggest of smiles on it!

DEAR KENNY, I am very upset at a dream that I had when my Father came through to me. At least I thought it was my Father, but in the dream he had bright blue eyes and spoke in a different voice. The dream repeats and I experience it twice a month. Is he trying to tell me something, and why has his voice and eyes changed? Vicky.P. Hi Vicky. Re occurring dreams can be quite scary, but I am sure that your departed Father wishes you no harm whatsoever. Often there is a change in voice pattern in such dreams, and other changes too such as expression, hair colour and stature are quite usual. Often such changes are to bring something to your attention, but there is no evidence that you are not acknowledging your Father. I think he is just assuring you that he is safe, and that he has survived the great journey to the other side. Next time the dream comes welcome him in, and start talking in your sleep. Maybe he feels that he needs to be identified by his daughter, and if this happens then he will subsequently drop the testing and connect with you as he was. Whatever your Father is starting a communication and you should be prepared to listen to anything that he has to say in the process, without any fears whatsoever.
Everything is not so cut and dried as you currently think. Keep options open and let things happen without fearing the judgment of others. You are free to explore new frontiers, and close to a lucrative loophole.

The key rule is that you must only change one letter at a time as you move from one rung to another, and the word you make must be a proper word! Therefore you may move from BATH --> BATS but not from BATH --> CASH because that changes two letters in one go which is not allowed.

Stagestruck! Murder Mystery By Keith Nicol STAGESTRUCK! PIONEERED the concept of ‘Murder Mystery in The Round” on the Costa Blanca in 2010. They are pleased to announce that they are premiering their latest production, ‘Hell Hath No Fury’, at El Mirador in Eagle’s Nest on March 28th. Tickets which include supper can be obtained from the venues. Their previous production, ‘A Friend In Need’, received full houses in February at Bocados in La Zenia, in conjunction with Little Pod, El Mirador in Eagle’s Nest and at The Club in Quesada, in association with Friends Of Help. These will be their last Murder Mysteries until Summer as they are concentrating on a new musical extravaganza ‘Bullocks’ which premieres in May at the brand new Casa de Cultura in Benijofar . Their Spring production takes place at The Bullock’s Hotel and is a Musical Comedy for adults. The show will be performed on May 23, 24 and 25 at 8.00pm. Race Report SUNDAY NIGHT saw yet another race night at the first oval track in Cartagena with the smell of rubber and the screech of tyres: this stock-car-style racing is really taking off. New drivers, both male and female, are taking part to make this a very enjoyable evening. Spots of rain filled the air, black clouds hung over the track. Was this to be the first wet race? No, but the spectators, of which there was over 100 both Spanish and English, were treated to a fine display of racing by all drivers as they pushed their calls to the limits and muscled their way around the track. It was decided to mix things up a bit and allow the rookies to race with the lightning rods. This was met with mixed reactions as the lightning rods are faster and so had to force their way through the traffic. Excellent fun for the spectators to watch though, as this obviously bought more carnage to the track. Mr Starter, or Martin as he is also known, received boos from the spectators, especially the Belchettes, when car 8 was demoted a place for rubbing another driver. This style
of stock car racing is a strict non-contact sport so when car 8 forced his way past car 48 a little too aggressively it was down to the stewards to demote him a place which promoted car 48 back to race winner: incidentally, the race before had seen car 666 black-flagged for a similar incident. The marshals were working extra hard as usual with plenty of flag-waving to keep the drivers concentrating on driving and not bumping. After all, this is stock car racing at its best, not banger racing. A great night’s racing and really good entertainment‌ For the latest videos of the races why not go on you tube and search ‘Velocity Racing part 6 The next race is 24th March and will be a night not to be missed. Why not come along, bring a picnic, and join in the fun. Or better still, get involved. Be a marshal or hire a car for the night and join the race Message from Martin: If you want to get involved please call him on 674 256 147. Wanted: cars - dead or alive: Drivers, marshals and sponsors.

Road Test WINTER HAS arrived, there’s a good smattering of frost and ice in the early morning and it seems to get much darker much earlier. This is the time of year that 4x4s come into their own. So no better time to be testing the second generation Mitsubishi Outlander – the third generation was launched in March 2012. Externally I actually prefer this earlier model if for no other reason than the chrome edging around the grille, which has been removed on the latest version. It’s not the most attractive off-roader on the market but its distinctive design is certainly memorable as well as practical. There’s a good high-up driving position and it will easily transport seven adults in comfort across three rows of seats (third row in the boot as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz) over all manner of terrain without a complaint. Inside, the dashboard seems a little stark and minimal, which is actually quite refreshing in this day and age when manufacturers seem to include as many buttons as they possibly can. Even so, equipment levels are high and the heated front seats are greatly appreciated by both my wife and I during the severe cold spell when the test takes place. There’s hardwearing leather upholstery and the front seats are electrically adjustable, too. The six-speed automatic gearbox is generally
easy to use although I must confess that when I first parked up I could not work out why the key would not come out of the ignition. After five minutes of head scratching I finally realised that the Mitsubishi required me to place the gearbox in park mode. I had left it in drive mode. Those preferring a manual can use the auto unit like one and there are paddle shifts either side of the steering wheel. This helps get the most from the engine and helps combat the delay experienced when setting off in automatic mode. Parkers, the car experts, say: “The second-
generation Mitsubishi Outlander is the best car the Japanese company has produced in years. Nearly all models come with seven seats, making it a good choice for larger families, while the interior is well built and durable. The extra seats are also very cramped and offer little comfort. The Mitsubishi Outlander is one of the better compact SUVs to drive, even though it also offers more than a modicum of off-road ability. It has responsive handling and accurate steering, and it keeps the body under control when cornering.” Mitsubishi Outlander 2.2 DI-D GX3 (Leather) 5d SST New price range: 26,563.28 € - 38,715.16€ Engine: 2.2-litre diesel Economy: 39mpg Power: 153bhp 0-60mph: 10.7secs Top speed: 123mph Fuel tank: 60 litres

Andrew James is having a well earned week off this week and will be returning next week with his usual week’s football news!
17 local athletes receive backing from Town Council by Keith Nicol TORREVIEJA’S PUSH to become a leader in sports tourism took another twist this week when the focus was shifted away from visiting teams to the city and the spotlight firmly focused on local, home grown talent, who are spreading the name of the city wherever they go. This week Torrevieja’s Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by the Councillor for Sports, Luis Maria Pizana, passed out a total of 25,900€ to a selection of local Elite Athletes, corresponding to their achievements over the 2013 season. On this occasion, 17 young torrevejenses athletes received scholarship funding for their achievements and sporting merit obtained in the last campaign. The amount of funding is dependent on each athlete’s athletic achievements and merits. Eduardo Dolon congratulated all of the young athletes
present and urged them to continue working and striving to achieve their goals. The local athletes who received grants were: Jesús Rogel Sánchez (Sailing) 4,500€, Ascensión Roca de Togores (Sailing) 4.500€, Luís Manuel Corchete Martínez (Atletismo). 4,500€, Emiliano Casal (Boxing) 3,000€, Iván Martínez Peiró (Atletics). 1,125€, Nicola Kun (Tennis). 1, 125€, Carmen Vila Pérez (Rowing) 1,125€, Daniel Marco Chapapría (Rowing ) 1,125€, Mercedes Fernández Pellicer (Sailing) 1,125€, Belén García Girona (Rowing) 940€, Paola Henarejos (Gimnasia Rítmica) 940€, Mireya Ortigosa Mateo (Rowing) 470€, María Teresa Hernández Rodríguez (Cycling) 285€, Joshua Merino Esteve (Tennis) 285€, Sergio Marco Chapapría (Rowing) 285€, José Francisco Rocamora (Athletics) 285€ and Gonzalo Sánchez Sánchez (Athletics) 285€.

Selection problems
The Final Whistle
So, it’s now eight years since Arsenal last won a trophy. However, after their midweek performance against Bayern Munich, I think I have put my finger on what their problem is – too often playing their best team. In the freezing cold capital of Bavaria, and without the services of the injured Jack Wilshere, Arsenal put out a shadow side and ran out 2 – 0 winners. It’s what Arsene Wenger needs to do on a regular basis from now on – decide who his best players are and then not pick them. As a QPR fan, I can confirm that former manager Mark Hughes did this on a regular basis at the beginning of the season bringing joy and happiness to us all on a weekly basis! Meanwhile, it’s the first time in seventeen years that no British side has made it the quarter-finals of the Champions League which should be a major warning sign to those that control the game in the UK, particularly in England. Income from the Premier League may be on the up but as for performances on the pitch, they are most certainly on the slide. Homework problems Being English, I’ve never needed much reason to have a good old bash at the Aussies. Over the years, the opportunities have been a little sparse but this week, the boys of the Baggy Green opened themselves up to ridicule after their coach axed four players from the third Test against India for ‘not doing their homework’. Mickey Arthur has since tried to dress up his decision as one that is designed to achieve better standards from his players – better timekeeping, better fitness and a better
attitude. However, asking players to prepare a presentation on how they can improve mid-way through a tour was always a dangerous route to go down. To me, it smacks of the coach not knowing what his charges are there for in the first place. And, after big defeats in the opening two Test matches against India, I can’t see any way that this will improve team morale (unless Arthur is going down the new Wenger routes of picking a second team when times get tough). In the meantime, to all those Aussie cricketers who have yet to hand in their three point thesis on the tour so far, perhaps I can help. Just give Mr Arthur this short but devastatingly accurate analysis: We can’t bat, we can’t field and we can’t bowl. That just about sums it up. Language problems Could I put in an advanced apology here? Should you be anywhere near the Valls in Javea around 6pm on Saturday, then the language might be on the strong side. There will invariably be some swearing and I have no doubt that much of it will be aimed at referee Steve Walsh, no matter how good a job he’s doing controlling the Six Nations decider between Wales and England. I have already bought my children earmuffs though I haven’t purchased any for my wife who, so she tells me, doesn’t listen to me very much anyway!

WHAT A difference a day makes (sounds like the start of a song) - yesterday getting soaked for three hours and today bright sunshine and really warm. The venue again, due to the weather, was the Eden canal, the competition being the 1st round of the summer series: 6 matches with the best 5 results to count. The river rose around 6-8 inches and the day after it still came up some 3-4 inches. When it was pegged, only swims with slack water were used, as the river was bombing through… The amount of rubbish that came down you would think there would be no rubbish left anywhere. Best part of the day was when you could lay your gear out and dry it!
In spite of the conditions there were only two dry nets. PLEASE NOTE The club has some vacancies at present: if you are interested in joining please contact Derek Swann on 96 672 9293 or 603 535 771. ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS supplied by Terry Screen This week’s 9th round of the Abbey Angling Cup was fished on the 5th March at the Eden Stretch. Following the heavy downpours of rain the water was really pushing through with the levels rising throughout the match: they are now cutting the bamboos down and are at Rojales at present, and this in turn is putting vegetation in the water which was coming through in big rafts and made the fishing hard going, especially on the feeder. Maggot and corn seemed to be the bait with Mullet being taken on the bread punch.
1st Clive (No more Golf) Cleghorn with 5.200kg fishing the feeder using maggot 2nd Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare with 5.120kg fishing the pole using the bread punch 3rd Richard (The Lion heart) King with 4.180kg fishing the feeder using sweet corn All details are available at www.abbeyangling.com or from the Match Secretary Terry Screen on 96 532 8368.

Now is the time NOEL’S WORLD OF GOLF By Noel Eastwell Teaching Professional Alicante Golf 639 730 891
THERE HAS never been a better time to join a golf club in our part of Spain than now - many of our golf clubs have reduced the price of annual membership by as much as 50% compared to just two or three years ago. As we are now all severely affected by the financial crisis which just seems to be going on and on we all need to consider our costs for everything in our lives so why not our leisure pursuits as well? The cost of golf with our golf societies is certainly considerably lower than it was but if we want to play more regularly at an affordable price the annual membership or ‘Abono’ as it is known here in Spain, is certainly the most cost effective option. Joint or family annual memberships are now commonplace and there is certainly no more affordable golf than this option if there are two or more golfers in the family. Junior golf schools are also available at most golf clubs so there is a fantastic opportunity for the younger members of the family to get involved in our sport if they are not already involved. There is no more healthier option than to play golf in stunning surroundings. For the adults there are numerous golf societies now
attached to just one golf club where they get hugely discounted rates for memberships and for the younger golfers there are bi-weekly tournaments at most golf clubs which will enable them to compete for some very good prizes and where they learn to integrate into local culture and enhance their language skills. We at RTN are trying to do our bit to help golfers afford to play the game more often and have negotiated an exclusive deal with Alicante Golf where they can become members of one of the best clubs in the area through RTN Golf Club. Our members will get an exclusive 20% discount off annual membership to make golf affordable for all the family. To receive your 20% discount email golf@roundtownnews.com and Noel Eastwell will arrange to meet you at Alicante Golf and make the introductions to the beautiful ladies who run the pro shop and introduce you to some of the other members at the same time. Other clubs will no doubt have special offers going on at the moment and it is certainly worth your while ringing around the clubs to find out what is on offer. As all who have lived here for a little while know, now marketing is not the strongest point amongst the
management of most of our golf clubs and we will need to do our own research to find out the best deals to suit ourselves. The best way to find out what is on offer of course is to visit the golf clubs and speak in person with the people there and have a look around and see what regular things happen at the club. Sometimes you will find some very pleasant surprises happening at the weekends and on other WIN A DOZEN SRIXON GOLF BALLS COURTESY OF GOLF MED Answer the question below correctly to have a chance to win. The winner of this fantastic prize will be picked at random at the end of each month. Send your entries by email to golf@roundtownnews.com The decision of the editor of RTN will be final in making the winning selection. QUESTION FOR 15TH MARCH 2013 Which major sports (golf) equipment company is Tiger Woods most associated with? All answers must be received no later than 5pm on 31st March to be entered into March’s draw, which will be made on 31st March 2013. The winner will be announced in RTN on 5th April 2013. To collect your prize you will have to come along to an RTN Golf Club day and meet with Noel Eastwell.
Any questions you have for Noel should be sent to golf@roundtownnews.com - Free golf lesson for all new RTN Golf members! Sign up now, limited offer

As a member you are also entitled to use our green fee booking service and receive exclusive discounts on green fees at local golf clubs as we continually seek to reduce the cost of playing the best sport in the World and encourage more and more people to enjoy the great outdoors.
