Long to reign over us... By Jack Troughton RTN AND its readers send hearty congratulations to Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth as she celebrates 60 years on the throne. Television screens and newspaper pictures will focus on the story of a monarch who was crowned in 1952 and has continued to delight and enchant her subjects through a number of milestones and now reaches its zenith with her Diamond Jubilee. The crowning glory of year long international celebrations is the four day long ‘Jubilee Weekend’ – a double bank holiday in the UK – when the country will turn a patriotic red, white and blue. In Spain, patriotic expats will be hanging out the bunting for parties and raising a toast to Her Majesty. Next week RTN plans a spread of photos of events throughout the region to mark the occasion, why not help us create something special by sending your pictures to rtnmail@roundtownnews.com. Turn to page 6 to find out how London are preparing for the celebrations.
MORE THAN 150 parents packed into the Los Alcores secondary school in San Miguel de Salinas on Tuesday evening to hear first hand how the cuts made by the Valencia government will affect their children and more importantly, their education. The meeting was organised by the school’s Parents Association (AMPA) and San Miguel’s Councillor for Education, Inma Hernandez, was also there to show her support for the teachers, parents and pupils. Also parents of children from the latter two years in the Gloria Fuertes primary school were invited as this will ultimately affect their children during the coming years. What shocked many parents was that, in theory, because of the cuts, some children who actually live in the town and have every right to attend the Instituto, may not be able to get places for their children in the school in September. FARCICAL The cuts mean that not only will teachers lose their jobs, an estimated eight to ten according to the school’s Director, class sizes will also increase. This means that in the classrooms at this school, which were only built to a specification of 30 children, under Valencia law, will now have to accommodate an extra six children; so that’s six extra tables, chairs, schoolbags and teenage bodies! After the meeting, that scenario was played out to the parents and it became quite farcical trying to get everyone in! For the older children, or young adults, as they are aged between 16 and 19 years of age, the scenario is even worse with the maximum students per classroom now being set at 42. Continued on page 5
