Sáez has accused the ruling Torrevieja government of breaking the Electoral Act, because of a rally held at the Teatro Municipal on 19th May 2011, three days before election day. The trial will be held in court number 5 in Torrevieja and involves seven councillors for allegedly committing an electoral offense by granting permission to hold a public event during the conservative Partido Popular campaign leading up to the local and regional elections of 2011. The meeting took place at the Municipal Theatre on May 19, 2011, however the Theatre was not on the list of public places offered to hold political rallies. The statement responds to the complaint that has already been brought to court once before, by the then candidate of the PSOE and current councillor Antonio Ruiz Sáez. On the first reading, the case was against former Mayor Pedro Hernández Mateo and filed in the High Court of Justice of the Valencian Community. Two years later the case has been passed to the Torrevieja courts, where they have started proceedings once again. The relationship of the defendants who have received an official notice to testify in court on 6 and 7 June is confusing. It is understood that a complaint has been
made to the courts because members of the Local Government authorized the meeting in the Municipal Theatre however the establishment was not on the list of facilities approved to do so. Thus, those who voted ‘yes’ to hold the meeting in the theatre have been called to court and include: Torrevieja’s Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, current councillors José Antonio Sánchez, Francisco Moreno, Dolores Albaladejo and Joaquín Albaladejo plus former councillors José Manuel Pizana and Lola Canales. Interestingly councillor, Javier Montoro, who was on the electoral list however did not attend the voting session, has also been accused, because Sáez stated that it would have been his ‘intention’ to go along with his party colleagues. In the same 2011, campaign, Torrevieja’s Alternative Popular Party also held a meeting in the Municipal Theatre and the United Left in the Palacio de la Música, however, neither of these events have received any denuncias or complaints. Thus, confusion reigns among the Partido Popular as to why a complaint has been raised and the real reason behind it. Today, Mayor Eduardo Dolon, and the first deputy mayor, Joaquín Albaladejo, hope to know the exact reason for your complaint. Continued on page 6
