Welcome to the Leadership Institute!

Powered by the Girl Scouts of Greater New York What is the Leadership Institute? The Leadership Institute develops 21st century success skills such as innovation, resilience, collaboration, and critical-thinking and in-demand, subject-specific skills through relevant, real-world projects designed to make the world a better place. This application-based institute takes girls on a journey of leadership exploration consisting of 5 key program components.

Who can join? Our Leadership Institute is available to 6-12th grade girls who reside within the five boroughs of New York City.

Do I have to be a Girl Scout to join? Every teen girl who resides within New York City is welcome to apply. Girls are welcome to join even if they have never been a Girl Scout.

What are the goals of the Leadership Institute? We are committed to: •

A New York City in which every girl feels empowered to lead in her community, the workplace, and the world.

Helping girls navigate transition as they prepare to enter high school, college, and the workforce.

•

Developing the skills, attitudes, and behaviors necessary for professional success; increasing interest, exposure, and practice in specific fields.

•

Encouraging girls to deepen their knowledge of Entrepreneurship, STEM, and Advocacy

Special Opportunities for Leadership Institute Participants Gold Award Mini-Grants

Girls with an approved Girl Scout Gold Award Proposal (the

highest award a Girl Scout can earn) are eligible to receive a

Gold Award Mini-Grant to use towards their Highest Awards project.

Scholarships for Travel Opportunities Interested in traveling throughout the US and internationally?

If you apply and are accepted to a Girl Scouts Destination

Program, you are eligible to receive a mini-grant that can be

used towards the cost of the trip.

Education Scholarships

The top projects in each course will be awarded an academic

scholarship that can be used towards educational activities.

Paid Internships

High-School aged girls are eligible to participate in a 70-hour

paid internship experience.

Reimagined & Expanding A message from Meridith Maskara, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Greater New York

Our Council is By Girls, For Girls, and there is no better example of that philosophy than the Leadership Institute, powered by the Girl Scouts of Greater New York. For some participants this program is their entire Girl Scout experience, for others it’s just a slice – but that’s the point! As girls get busier and busier, we wanted to make sure middle and high school girls had a program of their own that can substitute for or compliment their troop experience, or give them the opportunity to join Girl Scouts for the first time.

The bottom line is this: this program is designed to provide the experiences and opportunities girls tell us they want, and parents know they need.

Our Leadership Institute is designed to expand knowledge in areas of interest to girls, cultivate new indemand skills, increase curiosity, and give girls the tools to keep exploring their future aspirations, while developing a new generation of female leaders that are resilient, collaborative, and critical thinkers.

In year two of the program’s relaunch we are thrilled to add a new, third track that we know girls growing up in today’s chaotic world want: Advocacy! Our Advocacy track will join STEM and Entrepreneurship as the three choices of focus for this year’s Institute.

Whether girls choose Advocacy, Entrepreneurship, or STEM, all participants will:

• learn from experts in their chosen track, alongside girls from their own Girl Scout level;

• meet leaders in their field of interest and visit workplaces;

• visit colleges and prepare for upcoming academic transitions to high school or

post-secondary education;

• complete a real-world capstone project, which can be the beginning point to future Silver

and Gold Award projects- and we all know the value of achieving the Gold Award.

In the first year of the program’s re-launch we had 142 incredible participants and I can’t wait to see what this year’s cohort achieves! (And don’t forget, girls can participate year after year for a progressive learning experience.)

Leadership Institute participants are the future leaders who will make this world a better place and I could not be more proud to provide girls with this opportunity to develop their power as leaders.

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS: Acceptance into the Leadership Institute is dependent on an online application which includes short answer questions and a thoughtful essay. We are looking for girls who are ready to join us and contribute to our enriching leadership experience. There will be no in-person interviews for the 2020 cohort. With the addition of a new track, the 2020 cohort will accept up to 200 girls into the program.

All participants in the 6th – 12th grade must be registered with the Girl Scouts of the Girl Scouts of Greater New York Council. If you are not currently a Girl Scout member, you will be asked to register upon being accepted into the program. There is a $25.00 registration fee to join the Girl Scouts of Greater New York Council which is covered by your $25.00 application fee.

About: Calling all girls (and parents or guardians!) who want to learn more about the Leadership Institute, Powered by the Girl Scouts of Greater New York! During this evening at 40 Wall Street, we’ll walk girls and their parent/guardian through the full Leadership Institute curriculum. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions in person and gain a better understanding of the experience.

Can’t make any of these in-person dates? We have digital options! After our first live webinar on Thursday, September 12th, we will post a recording of this webinar on the link below for you to view at anytime. There are also two live webinars where you can ask questions to Girl Scout staff at the end of the presentation.

About: This evening is reserved for successful candidates who have been selected to join the Leadership Institute.

Attendance is mandatory for every girl and their parent/guardian as it’s important for everyone to understand the commitment over the next several months.

PROGRAM COMPONENTS: By applying to the Leadership Institute, Powered the Girl Scouts of Greater New York, girls are committing to each of the following components:

G.I.R.L. AGENDA RETREAT Dates: Friday, October 11th (afternoon) to Sunday, October 13th (Bus transportation from NYC will be provided)

About: The Leadership Institute adventure begins with a weekend retreat at our beautiful Girl Scout camp in Holmes, NY, Camp Kaufmann. The G.I.R.L. Agenda Retreat is designed to shape each girl’s understanding of leadership, build community among participants, introduce the Leadership Institute, and provide an opportunity to learn about their chosen tracks, Girl Scouting’s highest awards, community action, and advocacy.

G.I.R.L.’S GUIDE TO ACADEMIC SUCCESS Dates: TBD throughout Fall, Winter and Spring

About: These sessions serve as a survival guide at every stage of a Leadership Institute participant’s journey. Girls will attend grade-specific workshops, seminars, and activities focused on middle school success, transitioning to high school, or transitioning to college. Topics include socio-emotional and academic preparedness.

G.I.R.L.’S GUIDE TO WORK Dates: TBD throughout Fall, Winter, and Spring

About: Workplace visits expose girls to business operations and the professional world as they learn about the personal journeys and professional experiences of female leaders in the workplace.

G.I.R.L.’S GUIDE TO TAKING ACTION Dates: Saturday, January 18th, 25th, February 1st, 8th, 15th and 29th Location: TBD (Bus transportation from NYC will be provided)

About: Over six Saturdays, girls participate in day-long seminars to deepen their knowledge of subject-specific topics (Entrepreneurship, STEM, and Advocacy) through project-based learning. These seminars are led by expert program partners and trained facilitators who deliver curriculums to each of the 9 courses.

Girls will work either individually or in small groups to develop a project that will be presented at the culminating conference in June.

G.I.R.L.’S GUIDE TO COLLEGE Dates: TBD throughout Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer

About: College exposure events include college fairs, workshops and college visits to broaden their horizons, demystify the college admissions process, and prepare girls for success.

G.I.R.L.’S GUIDE TO LEADERSHIP Dates: TBD throughout program with Internships starting in Spring/Summer 2020

About: Opportunities to learn about resume building, interviewing basics, and more will be available throughout the program, with girls required to complete one of these special Leadership-in-practice opportunities. Highschool age girls will have the opportunity to apply their leadership skills in a professional setting by participating in a 70-hour paid internship that starts in late spring and must be completed by end of August. Girls interested in participating in an internship will be required to undergo training.

G.I.R.L. AGENDA SUMMIT Dates: June 12th and 13th

About: The G.I.R.L. Agenda Summit is an opportunity to gather girls from across New York City for a day of inspiration, preparation, and mobilization. The day will focus on how to be a catalyst for change in your community—and the world. Champion your views, influence leadership, and advance the G.I.R.L. Agenda to make the world a better place. All capstone projects for the Leadership Institute will be presented at the G.I.R.L. Agenda Summit.
