What is Dance Coding? A way for girls to learn computer programing skills through dance.

Vocabulary Code: steps created and written in a special language (Java, C++ etc.) to make up a computer program. Computer Program: an application that uses special language (code) to help a machine complete a task. If/Then: If something happens, then something else happens. Robot: a machine that can do complex tasks (usually programmed by computer code) complete a task.

Algorithm: a series of steps that are used to complete a task (or a program).
Mother may I program? Project: Girls (robot) will follow the program created by the leader (robot programmer). Materials: index cards, colored pencils, colored squares for floor. Directions: • Place colored paper (red, green, blue, yellow) randomly on floor, and girls circle up around. You can put multiple of each color. • Read your program step by step that is on your card and follow the directions (where to go, how to move there, action to do when you arrive) until program is finished. You can repeat this several times. • Create your own card (be the programmer), it should be legible because you will trade your card with other robots to follow.
Girl Scout Values Computer Programmers have to be courageous! They have to keep trying new things until they get it right. Girl Scouts have to be courageous too! Being courageous means that you’re brave and you’re not afraid even when you know things are going to be difficult. Can you think of a time when you were courageous?

Let’s Dance How much do you know about If/Then?
As a group follow a code (dance steps) to complete a task (a full dance). Suggested songs: Cha Cha Slide or Electric Slide. Ready for a challenge? Pick your own song and create your own code (dance steps) to make your own dance.
Project: Getting ready in the morning! Objective: Girls will explore how they use algorithms in their daily lives Materials: Paper and pencils Directions: • Come up with a list of things girls do to get ready in the morning (i.e. brush teeth, eat breakfast, etc.). • Divide into small groups, choose one task you do to get ready in the morning and write out each step required to complete the “getting ready” task. (Suggestion: Write it as if your talking to a 3 year old you are teaching the task to. • Come together as a large group. One girl from each group reads their task while another girl from a different group listens and acts out the task as it is read. Repeat for all groups.
