Planning Tip
Dear Friends: Another year of Camp Kaufmann adventure is here, and our staff is ready! We’ve switched it up a bit this time around, and are introducing a few new programs that are different and fun! As always, time at camp can be spent as a weekend or day trip, as a troop or on your own, planned by yourself or taken care of by yours truly! So many choices! One great aspect of this year’s programming at Camp Kaufmann is it’s a collective effort. Having staff input has given better perspective on what you may want to see in a program. We also listened to the feedback from previous programs to help with some improvements. Programs for Cadettes and older girls who are ready to come to camp without an adult have been improved. Daisies, we’ve opened many of our programs up to all ages, so come see what all the fuss is about! Also new this year, we will be running many events as both an overnight Weekend Theme trip and a Day Trip. So, if you would love to attend but aren’t quite ready for a whole weekend, you can still join in the fun! As staff such as Minnie, DJ Smokey, Lipstick, Ouch!, and Birthday can tell you, Camp Kaufmann is an adventure not to be missed! These and many other staff have grown up here at camp, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. And that is what we want for all the Girl Scouts in every borough, being a part of this camp community that allows them to explore, nurture, and grow into amazing women! If you have questions about a program, call Peter or myself and we will be happy to walk you through. Come join us for the ’17-’18 season and see what we can offer you! Sincerely,
Peter Delaney and Maggie Vasquez

Brainstorm ideas and then let us know the project ideas or choose from one of the ongoing projects already at camp. This can help with volunteer hours that some Girl Scouts need for school credit. Friday, they will have a campfire. Even if the weather does not cooperate, we have the option of using Westover or Hillcrest for the “campfire”. S’mores for dessert and an action plan is made for Saturday. These trips are as close to “girl-led” as possible. So, Friday, the girls decide what the activities for Saturday will be that fit the theme. They have a variety of choices, can be indoor or out, safely use various areas of camp, and explore camp at a time it is most serene.

All special events, day trips and girl only events include food. Please contact us if you have any allergies or diet restrictions. If you are planning a troop camping weekend you will be responsible for bringing all of your own food. If you do not want to transport all of it, you have the option of using Peapod! Peapod.com is a online grocery delivery service. The groceries will arrive at camp and we will put them in your unit for you. If you are going to use this service, please call Peapod at least 72 hours in advance of your trip. Once you have completed your order, please email your confirmation to Peter Delaney pdelaney@girlscoutsnyc.org. BE CERTAIN YOUR ORDER CONTAINS THE NAME OF THE UNIT YOU ARE STAYING IN! Having the Unit name on the order helps us and Peapod be sure the orders are going to the right troop. Set up your delivery between 12 pm and 4 pm on the Friday your troop arrives.

Summer 2018 Preview
The Weekend Getaways of 2018 are already in “the works”. This year, coming to Camp Kaufmann will be an experience that is “Other Worldly”! Maybe Aliens will show up, or it could just be some people from far off continents! Last year was big – BUT THIS YEAR IS BIGGER! We will have weekends themed around 6 (six) of the continents! See what each continent can offer you. Then, taste what our chef can make us to eat from that continent!!!
Land of Camp Kaufmann Summer 2017
When you explore, you must have a path to follow. Our Paths – or tracks – will be a Quest into Creativity and a Quest into the Unknown. The Creativity Quest (working on the Art in the Outdoor and Art Badges) will allow you to explore various art mediums such as painting, sculpting, and design. The Unknown Quest (working on the investigation and Science and Technology Badges) will search for answers to many questions – will an egg always break when it hits the ground? Do lemons or limes float? What makes a Diet Coke geyser work? Each quest will have pool time and a free period at the end of Saturday activities!

Our commitment to provide high standards, good value and a traditional Girl Scout Leadership Experience means that we try to provide an affordable experience to all Girl Scouts. It’s important to start budgeting for camp early and include your girls in the process. For information on financial aid, please visit www. girlscoutsnyc.org.
Do I get my own cabin? During Weekend Getaways you reserve beds, not cabins or houses. If your group does not completely fill a cabin or house, we will pair you up with other troops or other “mom and me” participants. Please talk to your entire group in advance. Everyone must come prepared to share space and get along. Campers will be placed in a house or cabin according to their age. Daisies and Brownie girls will be given the first opportunity for houses and log cabins. Juniors will mostly be given log cabins. Cadettes and Seniors will mostly be given wooden cabins. Please expect to share accommodations with other campers, and have the wonderful opportunity to make new friends! Please make sure you and your troop come to camp prepared to live in a cabin in the woods with no T.V. You will eat traditional camp food and try new activities with your girls. You will also share your space with your new friends and have an amazing adventure to last a lifetime. For more information on lodging, visit www.girlscoutsnyc.org/camp.

What about orientation? When you arrive at Camp Kaufmann your entire group will attend an orientation before beginning activities. Every camper young and old, new or returning, will attend. The orientation will give you valuable information about activities and safety. If you arrive before 4 pm on Friday, you will have the chance to swim after our orientation. If you arrive after 4pm your swimtime will be on Saturday. Other activities will be available on Fridays, and the Trading Post will be open then. For new campers, there will be Camp Kaufmann tours scheduled throughout the day. You will receive your complete weekend itinerary at your orientation.
Is transportation provided? Although the council does not provide transportation you still have several options to get to camp. •
Drive to camp - we have plenty of parking!
•
Order a bus for your group and send us a certificate of liability.
•
Take the train! Take the Metro North – Harlem line to the Patterson Station. Camp is about fifteen minutes away via car. The Pawling Taxi Company can get you to camp from there. Their number is 845.877.9595.

What are my program choices? A weekend at Camp Kaufmann is packed with fun and challenging activities. Come prepared to spend most of the day outside, rain or shine. We want to offer all campers an experience that is full of fun and learning. Please look at the program choices carefully and work with your girl(s) to decide your program focus. If you are coming as a troop and all of the girls are the same age, they should decide together what they want to do and mark it on the application. If your troop is made up of girls of different ages please have one volunteer for each age group. If two different age levels decide to stay together, the older girls will do a younger girl activity. Please note that we must maintain appropriate girl-to-volunteer ratios. As per our safety procedures, a minimum of two adults are needed for every traveling group. (For more information about ratios, contact Peter Delaney at 212.645.4000 x297.) Everyone will get a swim time and free time in their program. All girls will receive a Camp Kaufmann patch.
Do I stay with my girls all of the time? Yes! Girls must be supervised at all times by accompanying adults during Summer Camp Weekend Getaways. Girl Scout Troops must have a minimum of two adults with them. Additional adults should be added in accordance with Safety-Wise guidelines. For troops attending Summer Camp Weekend Getaways, one adult accompanying the troop (who may also be the leader) must hold current certification from one of the following: American Red Cross, American Heart Association First Aid and Community CPR, or be a physician, registered nurse, licensed nurse, paramedic or Emergency Medical Technician. The certificate-holder must be at least 18 years old. A copy of the certification should be attached to the Camp Application Form.
