Get Outdoors Guide

Novemb r 2019 – May 2e0 20

Dear Girl Scouts, One of the best things about my job is getting to watch Girl Scouts take risks, be brave, and try new things. And whether you are a true “tree-hugger” or more of an “indoor kid” there are so many new things to try in the great outdoors! In fact, last winter I tried something new at our Girl Scout Camp Kaufmann in Holmes, NY: skiing! Believe it or not, while growing up in Maine (where there are very cold and snowy winters) I somehow never tried skiing. But last winter when I visited Camp on a snowy winter weekend and I saw Girl Scouts of all ages stepping out of their comfort zones and trying new things, I was inspired! I put on my ski boots, clipped into my skis, and shuffled over to my instructor, trying not to fall. I listened and learned alongside Girl Scouts like you and in no time, I was flying down the mountain like a pro. If I can do it, so can you! What new things do you want to try this year? Here are just a few you could try in our outdoor programs this winter and spring: • • •

spend the night outside in a tent conduct an outdoor science experiment go snow shoeing

Or, you could try skiing! No matter what you try, I know you’ll feel proud, like I did. I can’t wait to see how brave you can be, outdoors!

Yours in Girl Scouting, Meridith Maskara Chief Executive Officer
