Spaghetti Structures

What is a Spaghetti Tower Marshmallow Challenge? The Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try: to serve God and my country, to help people at all times, and to live by the Girl Scout Law.

The Girl Scout Law

Did you know a Spaghetti Tower is a structure made of spaghetti, where girls get to explore the design process: thinking, doing, prototyping, and iteration?

I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

Vocabulary Engineer: a person who uses STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) to solve problems. Structure: something built by humans that can stand on its own. (i.e. bridge, building etc.) Draft: a plan for a project.

Triangle: the strongest shape for structures because weight is evenly applied to all sides.

Famous Buildings in NYC

Girl Scout Values Even when it’s windy and stormy, towers stand tall. Confident Girl Scouts do the same. Think about a time when something at school didn’t work out the way you wanted. How did you deal with it? Did you stand tall and keep going? Having confidence means learning from your failures and believing in yourself always.

Empire State Building Is a 102 story art deco skyscraper in midtown Manhattan.

Career Exploration 40 Wall Street Is a 71 story neo-gothic skyscraper between Nassau Street and William Street.

World Trade Center is a 104 story skyscaper that is also a Terminal Station on the PATH system. It is the tallest building in the United States.

Architects

Did you know Architects design towers? In fact, Architects design many types of buildings. They decide which materials to use, estimate how much a project will cost, and create drawings or miniature models of buildings.

Learn About

Sculpture

Build a

Spaghetti Tower

Fearless Girl bronze sculpture by Kristen Visbal A sculpture is a piece of art that is made by carving or molding clay, stone, wood or other materials. Sculptures can be of specific people and things, or they can be more abstract shapes. Sculpture is one way architects can make models of their buildings designs.

Materials: raw spaghetti, stale marshmallows, foil/wax paper (to protect table), paper and pencil Directions: work in small groups to design a structure out of spaghetti and marshmallows. It must be at least 10 inches high and stand on its own (no hands holding it up). First draw a draft of the structure to ensure it will be sturdy, then build it! Keep Learning: • What shapes do structures come in? Which might be the strongest? • Why do you think your structure stood up or fell? • Which shapes ended up being the strongest? • Were there any techniques that worked the best? Do you think (breaking spaghetti into smaller pieces creates more stability)?
