Providing Girl Scout opportunities to youth across 80 Kansas counties continues to be the focus of Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland. As we reach new girls and encourage existing girls to develop skills throughout years of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, it is important that the council continues to provide opportunities and assistance for membership and participation. During our most recent membership year, $72,086 of assistance was provided in the areas of individual’s membership to Girl Scouts of the USA, uniforms, camp experiences, book components, and troop start-up funds in addition to $11,500 in educational scholarships.

Members recently received a detailed email communication regarding a $15 Council Service Fee. The Blue Book of Basic Documents provides allowance and guidelines around a Council Service Fee up to the amount of the Girl Scouts of the USA membership dues. The fee will help support our sister Girl Scouts through continued financial assistance provided for individual’s membership to Girl Scouts of the USA as well as assistance for camp, uniforms, book components and troop start-up funds.

Girl Scouts continues to deliver programs that girls and their caregivers are asking for as we continue to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Girl Scout Clubs

Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland strives to give all girls the opportunity to participate in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Although there are now more ways than ever for youth to participate in Girl Scouts, some youth are still not able to experience the benefits of Girl Scout programming without additional support from the community. In order to overcome obstacles, our community outreach Girl Scout Clubs are offered where youth already frequent: in schools or after school programs, or through partner organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club.

Girl Scout Club participants are registered members for the year at no cost to the Girl Scout and her family and the program is no cost to our partners. We provide all the materials and supplies needed for the six to nine weeks of club meetings and curriculum is designed to be ready-to-go!

Like Troop Leaders, the Girl Scout Club facilitators serve as a role model and a trusted adult. The facilitator challenges their Girl Scouts through fun activities

Sponsored by

matching the selected theme and work to create the Girl Scout environment that we love: a place where Girl Scouts can explore and flourish with support from their Girl Scout sisters and adults. They are challenging Girl Scouts to be leaders, to be considerate and caring, courageous and strong and to make the world a better place. The Girl Scouts in our clubs are learning new things, getting hands-on with STEM and building up their life skills. Best of all, we’re able to welcome Girl Scouts to our community that may have never had the chance otherwise.

Interested in being a part of this Girl Scout Experience?

In order to offer Girl Scouts at no cost to the youth in our community, we need incredible adults to facilitate all the fun! This opportunity is a great chance to take advantage of volunteering hours, or, alternatively, you may be eligible for a stipend of $25 per meeting if you are not being otherwise compensated for your time. All materials and curriculum are brought right to you!

What is the commitment?

• The total volunteer time for one module will amount to approximately 10 hours.

• A Girl Scout Club module consists of 45-60-minute meetings.

• Based on the community partner's needs, there will be six to nine meetings over the course of six to nine weeks.

• Further details depend on the location of the club, but many of the clubs occur over the lunch period or during after school programs.

• If you are not being otherwise compensated, you may receive a stipend of $25 dollars per meeting ($150 for six meetings or $225 for nine meetings).

Gold Award Girl Scouts

don’t just change the world for the better, they change it for good.

Gold Award Girl Scouts 2023 Class

Milly Thornberry

The Gold Award is earned by girls in grades 9–12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership in developing sustainable solutions to local, national and global challenges. Since 1916, Girl Scouts have answered the call to drive lasting, impactful change.

Milly’s project, the “Artists’ Impact,” stemmed from her own love and appreciation for art and art education. Her first goal was creating and implementing a mural in the local middle school bathroom, as she wanted to encourage the younger generation to be interested in art. The second part was furthering her reach. By distributing flyers to area schools, she reached out to every art teacher in the district to encourage them and their students to join the “Artists’ Impact” by creating their own mural, posters or sticker campaign to place around the school.

CayLee Johnson

In pursuit of furthering her own education and increasing her reading level, CayLee's project focused on something that not only impacted her personally, but impacted those who may need it most. CayLee purchased children’s books and created audiobook recordings of them to donate to Wesley Children's Hospital. She put the recordings on mp3 players and donated the players, headphones and the physical books for the children to use during their hospital stays. In total, she recorded over 20 stories. CayLee made sure that the mp3 players and headphones would be easy to sanitize in between uses so the hospital staff would be able to maintain them for the children.

Kaley Mulligan

As an avid camper, Kaley has spent many summers exploring Camp Four Winds. She realized that only the northwest portion was being utilized and that the entire southeast section was overgrown, covered in dilapidated and unnecessary fencing and debris from an old farmstead and had no established paths or hiking trails. Kaley created a 16-phase plan to update the southeast portion of camp so future Girl Scout campers could utilize it for primitive camping and advanced hiking. She created pathways for hiking, cleaned up old farm trash, created picnic tables and benches, built three bridges, created trail markings and signs so campers wouldn't get lost, and more.

Tatum Hoard

After struggling with her own mental health troubles due to self-esteem and body dysmorphia, Tatum knew that she wanted to help her peers tackle those issues and thoughts. Tatum created a short film titled “You Are Enough” to show the importance of having positive body image and how it can affect your mental health. Tatum wrote the script, produced and edited the film. The video was shared with her school district, on YouTube and with fellow Girl Scout troops.

8

Keeley Ropp

Samantha Parks

Keeley's passion for helping others culminated in teaching sewing skills in a way that also raised awareness of the issue of hunger in the Wichita community. Keeley created a YouTube tutorial and hosted sewing classes to teach the community to create bowl cozies which can be used at local food banks and shelters. Keeley's curriculum will be used annually in North High School's sewing class.

Savannah Athy-Sedbrook

After being personally affected by the suicide of a relative, Samantha realized that many first responders and funeral homes are not properly educated in communicating with survivors of suicide loss. Samantha trained with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention so she could be well-versed and able to properly educate others on suicide postvention. She teamed up with the Sedgwick County Suicide Prevention Coalition and began outreach to all funeral homes and first responders in Sedgwick County to train them on suicide postvention. Samantha provided each contact with copies of the “Survivors of Suicide” handbook created by the coalition. She distributed more than 1,000 handbooks to the facilities so they can utilize them when needed.

Mariella Dreiling

Savannah's Gold Award focused on her passion for the environment and educating others about greenhouse gases. By creating a mini-series on YouTube, she shared the information with community members as well as third grade students at Robinson Middle School. Savannah also created tree sculptures from recycled materials that has a QR Code on them linking to the educational videos. She then distributed the trees to her friends and family, and they even went overseas so the education can continue worldwide.

Myria Connet

Preserving the past and updating for the future were the key factors of Mariella's Gold Award project. Mariella updated her local historical museum, the Bunker Hill Historical Society Museum, by creating an organizational system for the newspapers ranging from 1880-1930 to keep them in date order and in acid-free containers. She then updated, cleaned, reorganized and relabeled the display cases so the heirlooms were easier to see and understand. To update the building, she made cosmetic updates to the sign in the front and replaced the ramp and handrailing so it was safer and handicap accessible. Once the updates were complete, she hosted an open house where she met and talked with patrons about the updates and gave a presentation on how to preserve their own heirlooms.

As a member of the Wichita East High School Lion Dance team, Myria wanted her Gold Award to revolve around education about the history and culture of the Lion Dance. Myria created a website which houses information on the history behind the Chinese Lion Dance, educational lessons, and videos of the teams performances. She also held multiple practices, lessons, and performances so she could not only educate about the dance, but show how it is done as well.

Hannah Hecox

Kaylee Steele

Wanting to create more camping opportunities for older Girl Scouts, Hannah centered her Gold Award around Camp Four Winds. She created Hannah's Hammock's, which is a space that allows older girls to do more primitive camping. The space was constructed with telephone poles and the hammocks can be taken down and set back up. She also added a pallet garden with native Kansas perennials and a composting system so girls can maintain a garden and learn about "leave no trace" practices.

Nicole Sayler

Although Kaylee's local high school had a previously existing O.W.L.S. (Outdoor Wildlife Learning Site) location, the area was in poor condition and not regularly used by teachers and students. Kaylee upgraded the space by building and installing 10 new Leopold Benches for the area so her peers could have an alternative learning space. Additionally, Kaylee also added a sign to the area with a QR Code that links to her web page so her peers could learn more about the environment, how to practice sustainability, and about Aldo Leopold — a conservationist, educator, “father” of wildlife ecology and creator of the Leopold Bench. The website also contains a blueprint so others can create a Leopold Bench.

Erin Horton

Dedicated to helping her church community, Nicole's Gold Award was grounded in creating an upgraded prayer labyrinth for the church. The labyrinth was created by laying limestone screenings and placing new bricks in the labyrinth pattern. Nicole also created a prayer guide which can be utilized by church members during group or solo prayer at the labyrinth.

Grace Kelso

Passionate about making the world a better place, Erin knew she wanted to help her local community with the problem of the declining fish population in Winfield City Lake due to droughts. To increase marine-life population, Erin created habitats for the fish that provide shelter and food. The habitats were created to look like plants and made out of corrugated pipes so the fish can go in the pipes for protection. Algae will also grow on the structures which will create food for the fish. In total, Erin created 20 habitats and a map of where the structures are so boaters and swimmers are aware of the locations.

Grace has always been passionate about helping others, so her Gold Award focused on helping those in need. With "Socks for Cold Feet" Grace educated more than 100 youth members on homelessness and taught them ways to help others. She also created a sock drive to collect donations for the homeless community in Wichita. The drive will be an annual event continued by her church.

SPECIALTY TROOPS

Troop 47100: STEM

RoboTroop

Juniors-Ambassadors

Located in Wichita

The RoboTroop has earned many awards and honors over the years. Girls in the troop compete in a regional Botball tournament.

Troop 47428: High Adventure Juniors-Ambassadors

Following a travel experience to the National Girl Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, girls from several traditional troops came together to form H.A.T. — High Adventure Troop. They have gone zip-lining, rock climbing, horseback riding, primitive camping — including three days and two nights at Cross Timber State Park in Toronto, Kansas, where they went hiking, fishing and learned several outdoor cooking methods. They are looking forward to continuing their adventures!

Troop 47457: Travel Cadettes-Ambassadors

Located in Wichita

The Travel troop is a girl-led troop focused on international travel. The troop focuses on fundraising, trying new things, physical preparedness and learning about cultures

Specialty troops focus in on deep-dive topics and interests of the girls. This a great option for girls no longer interesed in a traditional troop, Juliette's who want camaraderie or even members of a tradtional troop that also want to explore their passions more! Right now, we have four specialty troops available:

around the world. Previous trips have included Belize where they went snorkeling, took a hike in the jungle at night and climbed the Mayan ruins and Italy and Greece where they saw ancient ruins, tried new foods and enjoyed a cruise around the Greek Islands. The next trip will be to London, Paris and Switzerland in June 2025. New members are being accepted until June 2024 for the trip next year.

Troop 47400: Living History Brownies-Ambassadors

Located in Wichita

Based out of the Old Cowtown Museum, this troop formed with the purpose of sharing knowledge of 1870s Wichita and reenacting the life of a pioneer girl by sewing, cooking, learning at school and having tea parties. The troop learns the customs of the time period and games the children played. Addtionally, they dress for the time period! They participate in events at the museum and earn related badges.

If you're interested in joining a specialty troop or have an idea to start a new specialty troop, contact the council at (888) 686-6468 or email info@gskh.org.

Pack your bags, Girl Scouts! It's time to travel.

From the field trips Daisies and Brownies take to the global adventures our teens go on, traveling is one of the many great things about Girl Scouts. If you love exploring different places and cultures, then Girl Scouts is the place for you.

There are multiple travel options available: Destinations, Council Travel and Troop Travel.

Destinations:

Girl Scout Destinations are the ultimate experience for girls 11 and older. There are many destination options available each year from trips across the USA to trips around the world! Upcoming trips include the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, Savannah, Georgia, a national park adventure to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks and a cuisine and culture tour of southern Italy.

Girl Scouts that apply for Destinations can also apply for the GSKH Sandy Remsberg Destinations Experience Scholarship. This scholarship exists to help girls realize their dreams. The amount awarded is determined by program cost and number of applications received. Following your acceptance into a Destinations program, you will receive information from GSKH staff about how to apply for the scholarship. To learn more, email us at info@gskh.org.

Council Travel:

Each year, we host a variety of travel opportunities ranging from local to international. In 2024, girls can join us on a trip to South Dakota where we will pan for gold, ride horses, visit Mount Rushmore and explore a mammoth site! In 2025, get ready for a trip down under as we head to Australia. Spend 11 days with your Girl Scout sisters exploring Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef.

Troop Travel:

In addition to troop meetings and regular troop activities, Girl Scouts often plan trips together — anything from a local day trip to an international adventure! Girls and adults work together to plan, budget and arrange trip details according to the guidelines and requirements for travel. Visit our website at www.kansasgirlscouts.org/travel for more information and resources.

Starwoods Branding Update

As Girl Scout summer camp season quickly approaches, campers from across Kansas Heartland and beyond can enjoy some of Kansas’ most colorful sunrises and sunsets! These beautiful skies were the inspiration for the newly updated logo for the Starwoods Girl Scout Center.

The logo depicts the colorful skies throughout the day and amazing stargazing opportunities that campers can enjoy while over-night camping. Also highlighted are the trees and natural prairie that Girl Scouts roam while exploring the great outdoors. The new tree-lined logo showcases the wooded scenery of Starwoods while representing the fun and colorful energy of today’s Girl Scouts.

Girl Scouts and visitors will be welcomed onto the Starwoods Girl Scout Center property with a new sign adhered to the existing stone wall at the entrance. Additionally, brand new Girl Scout merchandise, including a new Starwoods Girl Scout Center patch and other fun items, will be available this summer!
