Letters from Liz Welcome to the inaugural edition of Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland’s Spark magazine! I hope you like the new look and feel of our magazine. It combines exciting Girl Scout stories and news together with our guide to fun and engaging activities across the council in the coming months. “Spark” is the perfect name for this magazine. After all, the many Girl Scout experiences that the Council (GSKH) and volunteers provide are designed to do just that — “spark” the interest of our girls. Through the programming options and progressive experiences we offer, girls discover their interests — their “wows.” They develop both the hard and soft skills, and the values that prepare them to practice a lifetime of leadership. Our Girl Scouts are groundbreakers! They are G.I.R.L.s — Go-getters, Innovators, Risk-takers, and Leaders! At GSKH, girls develop the grit of a Go-getter — they don’t just dream, they do! Our Girl Scouts get to problem-solve like an Innovator — they don’t just share ideas, they find connections and work together to make our world better in both big and small ways. Girl Scouts have the courage of a Risktaker — they build the confidence to handle whatever comes their way and know every experience is an opportunity to learn and grow. And Girl Scouts have the heart of a Leader — they take the lead like a Girl Scout and inspire others’ greatness! In the coming months, I invite all of you G.I.R.L.s to share your stories with us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. And I would be delighted to be invited to join you at troop activities and for community service projects, so I can see you shine in action. You inspire me and all of us at Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland!

Cookie sales go coast to coast
For 100 years, Girl Scouts have used cookie earnings to build leaders who make a positive impact on our world. Girl Scout Cookies not only help girls earn money for fun, educational activities and community service projects, but also play a huge role in transforming girls into G.I.R.L.s (Go-getters, Innovators, Risk-takers, Leaders) as they learn essential life skills. society today is better because of the girls who have taken part in the Cookie Program. But how did it all begin? It started in 1917 when the Mistletoe Girl Scout Troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, did what Girl Scouts everywhere do: They had a great idea, got together, and took action to make it a reality! They decided to fund their projects by selling homemade cookies, and the idea spread!

6 tips from Top Seller Marissa When Marissa Hill set out to conquer her first Cookie Sale, she had no idea she’d end up selling 2,377 packages of cookies and become Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland’s Top Cookie Seller in 2016. In fact, her Cookie Sale goal wasn’t anywhere near 2,300 – she started out with a goal of selling 100 packages. We sat down with Marissa, of Wichita Troop 40307, to get some sales tips, to ask her what her favorite cookie is (Caramel deLites!), and to find out how a small goal turned into one BIG accomplishment.
1) Break a big goal down
into smaller ones.
Marissa said it helped to have smaller goals to conquer on her way to the top. After selling 100 packages, this go-getter moved on to her next goal of 400, and then on to 1,000, for example.
2) Dress for success.
Just like other Girl Scouts, Marissa quickly learned a critical “step” to success in her first Cookie Sale: wearing comfortable shoes. Along with wearing your Girl Scout uniform and bundling up if it’s cold
out, Marissa says “good walking shoes” are a must.
3) Make it personal.
“At first, I was just asking people to buy cookies, and then I added in my goal of going to camp,” Marissa recalled, noting people were more likely to buy cookies if they knew what her goals were, how they were helping her, or how they were helping others through Cookie Shares.
4) Teamwork makes the
and missing a cookie booth opportunity when she was sick. But Marissa kept going. “I didn’t stop — I sold during Spring Break,” she recalled. Her father, Jeffery, said Marissa wore her Girl Scout uniform often and even had customers approach her while eating at a restaurant. “Lunch time, dinner time, Spring Break … she just never burned out,” he said. “And we found that people are pretty supportive of Girl Scouts.”
dream work.
Marissa says she found success through teaming up with friends for five cookie booths. She also reached out to family and friends to go door-to-door through neighborhoods. “I borrowed my troop leader’s wagon a couple times,” she said.
5) Stay positive.
“Even if someone says no, say, ‘Thank you,’” Marissa said. “You’ve just got to be happy and positive.”
6) Never give up.
Her first Cookie Sale wasn’t without its share of obstacles, including some freezing weather
Girls who sell 100 Cookie Shares ride in style! Have you set a Cookie Share goal? Any Girl Scout who sells 100 or more Cookie Shares will get an invitation to the 500+ Celebration and arrive in style in a limo! The limo ride will be from the Salina Girl Scout Office to the Rolling Hills Zoo in Salina on April 29 (See page 9 for event details). Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland’s Cookie Share Program gives
customers the option of buying a package of cookies to donate. Customers who purchase Cookie Shares not only support future Girl Scout adventures, they are giving back to local charities and members of the military and their families. More than 117,500 packages of cookies have been distributed through the Cookie Share Program since 2010! DECEMBER 2016

1 13 12 1 1 15 14 1 1 16 1 18 17 1 Girl Scout Week kicks off this year on March 12, Girl Scout Sunday and also the Girl Scouts’ 105th birthday commemorating the day in 1912 when Juliette Gordon Low registered the first 18 girl members in Savannah, Georgia. So what does Girl Scout Week mean? It means that while Girl Scouts across the country celebrate 105 years of community service, we remain committed to making the world a better place. Serving as a Girl Scout today means being part of a worldwide organization that builds leadership skills by providing girls with opportunities to discover their interests, connect with others, and take action.
Celebrate by giving back: During Girl Scout Week, Girl Scouts of all ages can celebrate by demonstrating leadership and commitment in ways that have a real impact on their communities. We’re inviting Girl Scouts across Kansas to participate in a councilwide service project called “Sock It To ’Em,” which is a sock drive for homeless shelters, children’s homes, foster care agencies,
nursing homes, or any agency in your community that could use socks. You can contact an agency in your community to see if they can benefit, and if they could use socks with inspirational messages written on them by Girl Scouts! Another idea would be to write an inspirational message on a piece of paper to wrap around the sock before distributing them.
Ideas for Girl Scout Sunday: ✴ Help with spiritual services ✴ Sponsor a children’s craft ✴ Have a Girl Scout or volunteer share their experience with the congregation ✴ Earn the My Promise, My Faith award
Save the Date: Honoring our volunteers, Highest Award recipients Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland’s Annual Meeting will be Saturday, April 8, so save the date! Regional locations are to be announced and will be posted on kansasgirlscouts.org. This annual event will honor our dedicated volunteers and Girl Scout Highest Award recipients, while also giving members the opportunity to play a role in our council’s governance. 16

Outside In Campout 2016 What a blast! Thank you to all who participated in our epic Outside In Campout on Sept. 24 at Towne West Square in Wichita. There were crafts, singing, dancing, fashion shows, donations collected for the homeless, pizza, DQ ice cream, shopping, scavenger hunt, badge work, giggling, and very little sleeping. But most of all, it was an amazing time with our Girl Scout sisters. With almost 1,400 participants, there were tents, sleeping bags and mattresses all across the mall — an unforgettable night for the girls!
