Letters from Liz Imagine communities where girls in kindergarten and up come together, plan, and take action to fulfill the wish lists of local agencies serving those in need. Imagine girls who multiply their impact by enlisting adults and other youth in their community service projects. Imagine no more! This is the power of G.I.R.L.s across Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland who participate each November in the council’s annual Festival of Giving, a tradition of service dating back to 1950. Last November, I got to witness Girl Scouts not only gather food and toiletry kit items for the Wichita Guadalupe Clinic’s homeless outreach services, but also donate hundreds of gift cards and bus passes to assist the clinic’s patients in need of transportation and medication. The Guadalupe Clinic was among the many agencies that benefited last year from the more than 1,500 Girl Scouts who donated items and their time during Festival of Giving. Girl Scouts are community problem-solvers. Girl Scouts are GoGetters who set their sights on ambitious goals to help others in their communities. Girl Scouts are Innovators who find creative ways to gather small donations from many people to make a BIG impact. Girl Scouts are Risk-Takers who get outside of their comfort zone to achieve BIG things. Girl Scouts are Leaders who see a community need and take action to solve it. I can’t wait to see the BIG difference Girl Scouts across our council will make this November for the well-being of thousands of community members during the Festival of Giving and throughout the year! Yours in Girl Scouting,

2017 LEGACY PEARL HONOREES
Dolores Collins Crum
Joann Kamas
Gladys Wiedemann
Mary Dolores Collins Crum retired after 47 remarkable years of service to the Wichita Area Girl Scout Council. To Girl Scouting and in every phase of her life, Dolores brought warmth, devotion, and enthusiasm.
Joann Kamas served as the Executive Director of the Wichita Area Girl Scout Council from 1987 to 1999. She was known for her high-energy style of leadership, combined with a love for Girl Scouting and Girl Scout volunteers. She inspired many to make the council an exceptional example of what Girl Scouting can be for all girls.
Gladys Gardner and Karl T. (K.T.) Wiedemann were married on July 22, 1950, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Gladys was born and raised. K.T. was from El Dorado, Kansas. Shortly after marriage, they moved to Wichita. Together, they shared a deep love for the scenic Flint Hills. To help support the place in which they lived and operated their business, the couple established the K.T. Wiedemann Foundation, Inc. in 1959, with the vision for a finer quality of life in Wichita and the state of Kansas. The Foundation supported many organizations, but Gladys took an interest in youth and particularly in the Girl Scouts.

It was said at her retirement, “Dolores has worn so many hats in her tenure with Girl Scouting, it is safe to assume that she knows every facet of what it means to offer Girl Scouting to thousands of girls and adults.” She served as Director of Camping, Program, Training, Adult Recruitment, and Special Events. The National Association of Girl Scout Executive Staff inducted Dolores into its Hall of Fame. A Girl Scout Alumni and Friends scholarship was named in her honor. She wrote the council’s history book “For The Girls,” chronicling the council’s 75-year history, from 1925 to 2000. Dolores’ care for her church, her family, and her community was reflected in her service to the Governor’s Commission on Juvenile Delinquency, United Way Committee to Offer Camping to Low Income Children, Model Cities Task Force on Recreation, The Junior League of Wichita, St. Thomas Aquinas Altar Society, Delta Delta Delta Alumnae, and the League of Women Voters, to name a few. Along with her husband, Charles Crum, she was a fan of Wichita State and KU Basketball. Dolores Crum personified the Girl Scout Movement, and we are truly grateful for her generous service.

Joann put a premium on the importance of volunteering and practiced what she preached. Prior to becoming Executive Director, she served on the council’s Board of Directors, including two terms as president, and also served as a council committee member and troop leader. She served in many other community organizations. Joann worked with the City of Wichita to establish the current network of bike trails and to educate the public about the importance of water conservation. She once said, "I would like to leave a small mark. Sometimes I think people are afraid to give of themselves, but once they know what it feels like, they're hooked. You feel like a valuable person when you're giving." Joann died suddenly on March 26, 1999, after suffering a heart attack while vacationing in Amman, Jordan with her family. She left more than a small mark on our community. We will definitely remember her love of Girl Scouting, her commitment to helping girls become the leaders of tomorrow, her strong example, her tireless energy, and her ability to make all she knew feel welcomed, valued, and a true friend.
Keynote Speaker:
Sylvia Acevedo CEO Girl Scouts USA, Lifelong Girl Scout, entrepreneur, author, engineer, and rocket scientist.
In 1959, a campsite of 120 acres near Beaumont, Kansas, was purchased from the Wiedemanns and in 1961, it became Camp Wiedemann, the council’s first resident camp. The camp welcomed its first campers in 1967 and served thousands of girls and adults over the next 37 years. Mrs. Wiedemann enjoyed visiting camp during the summer, and campers were excited to visit with the camp’s namesake, too. Mrs. Wiedemann was actively involved in the Foundation until her death in 1991. We are grateful for the memories and opportunities bestowed by her giving spirit. It’s been said that if you listen closely, you can hear girls’ voices and the melody of the song “Welcome to Wiedemann” drifting through the bluestemmed grasses of the Flint Hills. Thank you, Mrs. Wiedemann.
The Juliette’s Pearls Leadership Society works to advance Girl Scout Founder Juliette Gordon Low’s vision of giving all girls the opportunity to discover, lead, and make their communities and the world a better place. Go to kansasgirlscouts.org/jpls for more info. 3
Girl Scout Generations
When lifetime Girl Scout Gladys Kennedy of Lebanon, Kansas, turned 100 years old on Feb. 27, 2017, her family full of G.I.R.L.s (Go-getters, Innovators, Risk-takers and Leaders) joined her in celebrating! Gladys, who helped start Girl Scouts in Lebanon in 1950, paved the way for multiple generations of Girl Scouting in her family: Her daughters are lifetime members, two granddaughters are lifetime members, and she has greatgranddaughters who are Girl Scouts, as well! In fact, every one of her family members pictured above is a Girl Scout.

Thursday, Aug. 10 is National S’mores Day, and you’re invited to join us in celebrating! During our National S’mores Day events, which are FREE to the public, you and your friends can enjoy hot dogs and the yummy goodness of a chocolatey, graham-crackery s’more. At these come-and-go events, the public can learn more about how Girl Scouts lead the way like a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, and Leader), and sign up to join Girl Scouts or become a volunteer. There will be fun activities at each event! S'mores have long been a staple around the campfire, but did you know this delicious treat is rooted in Girl Scout history? That's right! The recipe for a s'more dates back to the 1925 Girl Scout Leader magazine and the 1927 Girl Scouts of the USA handbook, “Tramping
and Trailing with the Girl Scouts,” which featured this "Some More" recipe: "Some More" 8 sticks 16 graham crackers 8 bars plain chocolate (Hershey's or any of the good plain brands broken in two) 16 marshmallows Toast two marshmallows over the coals to a crisp gooey state and then put them inside a graham cracker and chocolate bar sandwich. The heat of the marshmallow between the halves of the chocolate bar will melt the chocolate a bit. Though it tastes like "some more" one is really enough. JULY 2017

a RISK-TAKER story
Courage in the face of fear By Dan Winegar, Ranger at Starwoods Outdoor Center This summer, we had a group of Cadettes and older utilize our climbing tower at Starwoods. I, along with Program Director Jen Arnold and Miriam Fiering of Girl Experience, facilitated the zip line for the girls. We had sent 10 or so girls down when this little girl came up the stairs. Rachel was about 4 feet tall with dark hair and glasses. As Jen clipped her into the lifeline tether at the top of the stairs, we could tell she was a bit nervous. Jen instructed her to take her time and just enjoy the view for a bit. When she was ready, Jen told her, “Ok, look at Dan and walk over to him, and he will take care of you." She gripped her trolley tightly and slowly shuffled her feet toward me. I asked, "What is your name?" She replied with a whimper in her voice, "I'm Rachel." I said, "Rachel, it's nice to meet you. I'm Dan." I asked for
her trolley and told her to hang onto the railing and I would be right back with her after I attached her trolley to the zip cable. As I turned back to her, I asked her if she was ready to step out to me on the platform. As we stood there, I told her if she wanted to, she could change her mind and go back down. I told her we were already proud of her for making it this far! Rachel told me she still wanted to do it. I told her at this point I would need her help. With her only being 4 feet tall, I told her I would need her to reach up to the trolley and help me lift her up so I could clip her into the trolley. As she strained to pull herself up, I was able to clip her back-up tether and main tether into the trolley. I could tell this process had rattled her a bit, and I reassured her she was completely safe. I joked and told her we could send an elephant down this line if we had a harness big enough. She half-smiled. Rachel's legs weren't long enough to reach the platform. She said, "Please don't let me go yet." I said, “Rachel, I'm not letting you go until you tell me you are ready.
Remember, at any time, you can go back down the stairs instead of zipping." She said in a soft voice, "I just want to take a few minutes." I told her to take as much time as she needed. I radioed down to Miriam and made sure she was ready at the landing deck. Rachel was still visibly rattled as I went through my final checks. As I looked at Rachel’s face, a single tear rolled down her cheek. I said, "Rachel, remember, you don't have to do this. It is completely your choice." She looked back at me and said, "I'm ready. Let me go." I let go of her trolley, and she was off. I was so proud of her. I have never seen such courage in such a little girl. I found Rachel as she came back from the landing deck and asked her how her ride was. She triumphantly said, "That was so much fun!" These opportunities we offer through Girl Scouts truly have an impact on the girls we serve. I know Rachel's courage had an impact on me I will never forget.

Oct. 31 marks her birth in Savannah, Georgia in 1860. Juliette Gordon Low started the Girl Scout Movement in 1912, before women could legally vote, own property, or even work outside the home. She died in 1927 of breast cancer, but her vision lives on through Girl Scouts who take action to make a difference every day.

Festival Of Giving A tradition of giving that started in Wichita expands statewide to all who wish to participate.
Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland
2017
Festival of Giving began in 1950 as the Doll Festival in Wichita, where Girl Scouts would dress dolls and display them at the festival. Afterward, the dolls were distributed to local and overseas agencies for children who might not receive Christmas presents. 10
Spark ☙ JULY 2017
This tradition of giving back that started 67 years ago continues today, as hundreds of Girl Scouts sign up each year to give their time and donations to help fulfill social service organizations’ wish lists. This year, Festival of Giving is expanding statewide to any Girl Scout who wants to help an organization in their own community! Girls who participate receive a free patch, spend time learning about the organization they’re aiding, and demonstrate that small donations from many people make a BIG difference.
What: Festival of Giving Donation Day When: Nov. 11 - 12 Where: Locations vary, depending on which organization Service Units are teamed up with to support. Contact your Service Unit or our Girl Experience team at info@gskh. org with “Festival of Giving” in the email subject line. Register by Oct. 30 to participate! a GO-GETTER story
Cookie Sale success! Go-getters are bold, honest, determined to succeed, and believe no challenge is too difficult. There were 814 girls who sold 500 or more packages of Girl Scout Cookies this year, and 167 girls who sold 1,000 or more packages! These go-getters celebrated April 29 and 30 during special events at Rolling Hills Zoo in Salina and at Great Wolf Lodge in Kansas City, where IBM hosted STEM activities at the 1,000+ Celebration.
For the second year in a row, and during her second Cookie Sale, Marissa Hill of Wichita Troop 40307 was the council’s Top Cookie Seller! She sold a total of 2,514 packages — 137 more than she sold last year! Kansas Girl Scouts have much to celebrate this year, with 1,560,128 packages of cookies sold councilwide, topping the 1,505,334 packages sold in 2016. This year, the average amount of packages sold per Girl Scout was 265! Girl Scouts also sold 22,150 Cookie Shares benefiting soldiers and Kansas charities — an amazing way to give back. Those who sold at least 100 Cookie Shares enjoyed a limo ride to the 500+ Celebration. Way to go, Girl Scouts!
