Leadership Society Luncheon inspires, benefits Kansas Girl Scouts “Say yes to life, even when it’s hard. Say yes to opportunity, even when it’s intimidating.” Those were some of the inspiring words shared by keynote speaker Susan Page during the second-annual Juliette’s Pearls Leadership Society Luncheon on Feb. 16, 2017, at the Drury Plaza Hotel Broadview in Wichita. Page, a graduate of Wichita Southeast

High School, is now the Washington Bureau Chief of USA Today, and she returned to her hometown in support of Kansas Girl Scouts and to share a message encouraging female leadership. About 200 people attended the special luncheon and contributed to the society’s mission of investing in girls to build tomorrow’s community leaders. More than $150,000 was raised to support members across

Girl Scout of Kansas Heartland, the premier leadership organization for girls in Kansas. The event also recognized Legacy Pearl Honorees Dolores Collins Crum, Joann Kamas and Gladys Wiedemann. Founded in 2014, the Juliette’s Pearls Leadership Society works to advance Girl Scout Founder Juliette Gordon Low’s vision of giving all girls the opportunity to discover, lead, and make their communities and the world a better place. Go to kansasgirlscouts.org/jpls or call (888) 686-6468 to learn more about the Juliette’s Pearls Leadership Society.

While some people still think of us as just cookies, campfires and friendship bracelets, Girl Scouts are so much more. Girl Scouts are groundbreakers, big thinkers, and role models who are improving their communities. As a Girl

Queen, a Daisy Girl Scout in Wichita Troop 40151, started volunteering with her Girl Scout troop and enjoyed it so much, this go-getter decided to take the lead and continue giving back on her own time — and in a big way. After caroling at a local nursing home with her troop over the holidays and aiding a local family in need, Queen loved the experience so much she decided to do a good deed every day, for 25 days leading up to Christmas.

“She did ‘25 days to Christmas,’ and the first day we took food to the homeless are downtown,” her mother, Brittany, determined to succeed, bold, honest and recalled. “She took gloves and goal-oriented. She’s doing really well on the homefront.”

The innovators in Brownie Troop 11268 from Hays are future scientists in action! The girls had an amazing time experimenting with some exciting science activities. Troop Leader Erin Farber shared the fun details: "We started off learning about different densities of liquids and why some liquids can hold others. We also

Scout, you’re a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-Taker, Leader). These are the traits that define girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place — it’s the Girl Scout DNA! See how these Girl Scouts have channeled their inner G.I.R.L.

In May, Girl Scout alumna Amy Delamaide will travel to the other side of the world – about 7,910 miles away, to be exact – to make Kathmandu, Nepal, her new home as she starts a new career as a U.S. diplomat in the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service.

Girl Scout Gold Award

2016-2017

The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. It recognizes girls in grades 9 through 12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through remarkable Take Action projects that have a sustainable impact in their communities and beyond. Congratulations to the Girl Scouts across the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland Council who have accomplished this incredible honor.

How to GoGold The following seven steps are required to earn the Gold Award:

1. Identify an issue — Use your values and skills to identify a community issue you care about.

2. Investigate — Research everything you can about the issue.

3. Get help —

Alexandra Adkins, a 2016

graduate of Wichita West High School, brought awareness to teen dating violence by creating an information packet for schools to distribute to students. Her packet, along with a campaign that included fliers, posters and a Facebook page, shared key resources her peers could use to get help.

Invite your squad to support and take action with you.

4. Create a plan — Come up with a project plan that achieves sustainable and measurable impact.

5. Present your plan — Sum up your project for your council and get feedback.

6. Take Action — Take the lead to carry out your plan.

Maureen Botros, who will

graduate from a Wichita homeschool in 2018, addressed negative stereotypes about women in technology through her “Illumicize” project while also attracting more girls to STEM careers. She offered an instructional course teaching girls electrical and coding skills they could use to make light-up fashion accessories. During a fashion runway show, the girls wore the accessories, which monitor heart rate and light up to incentivize exercise.

Melanie Cotton, a 2016

graduate of Logan High School, took action to help senior citizens in her community enjoy the outdoors. She learned woodworking and constructed a wooden bench and planter box for Logan Manor Community Health Services, an assisted living center in Logan.

Elizabeth Kemper,

Cookie Credits: Spend your rewards! Ready for a new adventure? On April 15, Girl Scouts can start spending their Cookie Credits they earned during the 2017 Girl Scout Cookie Program! Cookie Credits are council-issued credits Girl Scouts earn through product sales. Here’s the scoop on your sweet rewards: When can they be used? Year-round! Cookie Credits earned during the 2017 Cookie Program will be available starting April 15 and will remain on girls’ accounts from one membership year to the next, as long as the girl has renewed her Girl Scout membership by Dec. 15 of each year.

How many have I earned? Members can check their Cookie Credit balance in UltraCamp. You will need your username and password to log in and obtain your balance. Use the “Forgot Your Login Information?” option if you do not know your username/password. Call 888-686-6468 if you need assistance.

How can I use my credits? Girls in kindergarten through grade 12: • May apply Cookie Credits toward program fees, council event fees, and purchases from Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland's Girl Scout shops. When spending Cookie Credits in GSKH Shops, a Council Shop Cookie Credit Usage Form (available on kansasgirlscouts.org) is needed to confirm parent permission of the purchase. • May apply Cookie Credits toward councilapproved troop trips or travel or destinations. The council-approved troop trip must be at least 125 miles from point of origin and include at least 50 percent of the troop members. Graduating Girl Scout Ambassadors (grade 12): • Must use their Cookie Credits by the Sept. 30 immediately following their graduation. • May apply Cookie Credits toward a Lifetime Girl Scout membership. The application deadline is the Sept. 1 immediately following their graduation.

Spark ☙ MARCH 2017

How do I use Cookie Credits for troop travel? A completed Troop Cookie Credit Request for Travel (available on kansasgirlscouts.org) is required to: • Use Cookie Credits for council-sponsored travel, a council-approved troop trip, or GSUSA destination when UltraCamp is not used for event registration. • Use Cookie Credits as payment for an out-ofcouncil resident camp. Please allow two business days for transfers. The parent/guardian will be automatically notified by email once the transfer is complete. Questions may be directed toward info@gskh.org or go to kansasgirlscouts.org to learn more.
