Letters from Liz Fall is upon us, and we kicked off the new Girl Scout membership year with an epic badge workshop, Leadership Takes Flight. On October 5 at Century II, thanks to Textron Aviation’s generous sponsorship, Girl Scouts of all ages earned STEM and Girl Scout Way badges. Leaders tested our many troop resource kits and learned about this year’s new Girl Scout badges. Plus, two Girl Scouts in each level won a Textron Aviation 30-minute Discovery Flight with their special adult and a Textron Aviation pilot! This Spark Magazine is brimming with information about our upcoming 2020 Cookie Entrepreneur Program. In addition to developing five important life skills – goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics – Girl Scouts and troops are fueling amazing adventures, both near and far. As you know, a Girl Scout Cookie is so much more than a sweet treat. Flip to page 11 and learn about how far a cookie can go in 2020! New to the 2020 Cookie Program is the collection of Cookie Entrepreneur Family pins, giving you and your family the chance to think like entrepreneurs together. DEANELL TACHA Retired U.S. Circuit Judge Lifelong Chief Judge of the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals
After graduating from Scandia Rural High School in 1964, Judge Tacha attended college at the University of Kansas. As she approached her graduation from KU, Judge Tacha was faced with making a decision about her future. Tacha decided to pursue legal education at the University of Michigan, where there were few women at the time of her enrollment. But the numbers changed dramatically over the course of her three years there because of the Vietnam War. She excelled at Michigan, and her efforts were rewarded when she was selected as a White House Fellow upon graduation. At the conclusion of her fellowship, she joined the Washington-based law firm Hogan & Hartson. Love intervened

in Judge Tacha’s plans, thanks to John Tacha. Her stint at Hogan & Hartson was a relatively short one. The firm’s loss, however, was Concordia’s gain.
She has been active in the American Inns of Court movement as a spokesperson for enhanced ethics, professionalism, and civility in the legal profession, and served as president for the national Board of Trustees of the American Inns of Court (2004-2008). She was named recipient of the Devitt Award in 2007 and the John Marshall Award in 2008. She also served as Dean and Professor of Law at Pepperdine School of Law from 20112017 and is working with JAMS doing consulting, arbitration, and mediation.
In 1974, shortly after getting her private practice in Concordia off the ground, Tacha was offered a teaching position at the University of Kansas Law School. In 1979, Tacha moved to an administrative role within the university, serving as the school’s associate chancellor. In 1982, she became vice chancellor for academic affairs. After being pressed by an old family friend, Sen. Bob Dole, Tacha was persuaded to reassess her position and consider a nomination for a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. In 1985, she heard the news that President Ronald Reagan had selected her to serve on the Tenth Circuit. With the appointment, she had found a vocation that merged her roles as teacher, attorney, and public servant. Over the course of her 20 years on the Tenth Circuit, Judge Tacha was at the forefront of a number of important legal issues ranging from immigration to terrorism. In 2007, Judge Tacha’s term as chief judge of the Tenth Circuit ended. For Tacha, balancing the national interests as a circuit judge and the local ones of her community came naturally to her, because it was something she had done throughout her life.
While the twists and turns have been many, the values instilled in the Kansas heartland served as her compass, guiding her on the road of success. This piece is largely an excerpt from Judge Tacha's Judicial Profile written by Christopher M. Parent and published by the Federal Bar Association.

How Far Can a Cookie Go?
A Girl Scout Cookie can take girls on amazing adventures. But just how far can a cookie really go?

During the Summer of 2019, twelve girls and several volunteers from Service Unit 70 loaded up and prepared for the trip of a lifetime. These Girl Scouts from Western Kansas embarked on 7 days and nights of making memories, camping under the stars, and visiting an iconic landmark--the Grand Canyon.
After this whirlwind of fun, the girls journeyed to the main event. They spent a day at the Grand Canyon, testing their bravery on the skywalk, learning about Native American tribal dances, and watching the sun set over the picturesque views of this treasured landmark.
Beginning in Goodland, Kan., Girl Scouts ranging from Cadettes to Ambassadors journeyed to their first stop in Santa Fe on this unforgettable trip. There, the girls explored Meow Wolf, an interactive and immersive surreal art installation, then these explorers traveled to Albuquerque, N.M., visiting the Petrified Forest National Park and Painted Desert. Afterwards it was off to Arizona where they observed the mile-long meteor crater in Winslow, Ariz. For the next four days, the girls camped outside

The next morning, it was time to pack bags and say farewell to Arizona, but an early morning idea quickly turned into another adventure that led these go-getting Girl Scouts to the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. With a spontaneous adventure under their belts, the girls drove north to Durango, Colo. for one last night. Pagosa Springs marked their final stop before returning to Kansas, where they enjoyed horseback riding together as the trip came to a conclusion. New adventures await Service Unit 70 over the next few years with trips already planned, such as skiing in Colorado, touring Yellowstone National Park, visiting Juliette Gordon Low's birthplace in Savannah, and even going back to the Grand Canyon eventually.

Through the Share Program, Girl Scouts and their caring customers share cookies with members of the military and their families, or with various Kansas charities of their choice. In 2019, the Cookie Share Program distributed 16,486 cookie packages to the military and Kansas charities. That means Girl Scouts reached a landmark number of shares with more than 175,258 being donated since the programs inception in 2010. How does the program work? It's simple! Shares cost the same as a package of cookies, and customers can simply opt to purchase a taxdeductible Share, which donates a package of cookies. Tell your customers about this sweet way to give back!

Recognition Breakfast & Annual Meeting Saturday, April 4, 2020 - Regional locations to be announced soon It’s time to celebrate! This Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland annual event is held because of dedicated volunteers who allow girls to chase their adventures through Girl Scouting. Also recognized will be Gold Award Girl Scouts and scholarship recipients.
Attendees will enjoy a breakfast, witness volunteer recognition announcements, and also have the opportunity to serve in a leadership role. All members ages 14 and older are voting members in the annual business meeting portion of the event.
