e d i t o r i a l South African tour provides insights to electronics

electronic products andtechnology technology electronic products and Volume 33 Number 2

Having participated in an exclusive media tour of the electronics and ICT markets of South Africa this past November, I certainly came away with a deeper understanding of that country’s challenges and vast potential. Without a doubt, South Africa represents a promising emerging market in the world today and is among the most advanced economies on the African continent. My host for this trip was Savant, the marketing arm for South Africa’s electro-technical sectors. The group represents a partnership between the federal government’s Department of Trade and Industry. As the lone Canadian media member on the tour, our group made visits to three of the country’s largest industrial centers including Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. With a population of more than 48-million, South Africa makes up just 4% of the continent’s surface area, but is responsible for approximately 40% of all industrial output. On top of this and maybe most importantly, South Africa has a strategic geographic position that provides an ideal gateway to Sub-Saharan Africa, verging on a population of 1-billion and representing unprecedented growth potential. Its economy can be classified as a middle-income, emerging market with an abundant supply of natural resources, including certain strategic metal and mineral resources. Questions about available and affordable skills in the South African market have been answered for several large multinational high tech compa-

nies, which have located regional offices there. South Africa’s ICT sector is an important cog in the country’s economy, representing a $28-billion industry, 65% of which is connected to telecommunications. It directly impacts all of South Africa’s economy, used as a major tool in its industrial, mining and agricultural sectors. The government’s mindset is to see its ICT sector expand, playing its role in servicing established, developed parts of its economy, as well as it increasingly becoming a tool for overcoming problems of poverty and inequality across South Africa. Having already faced huge challenges politically, South Africans have proven to be adaptable - facing each test as an opportunity. Among its many advantages, South Africa provides foreign investors with a Western business culture and similar timelines as most of Europe. And, possibly the most important point is that South Africa clearly understands markets within the African continent and the massive opportunity it represents. The country withholds the technological and intellectual ability to develop something that complies with first world technology, but, is appropriate to the third world. Atlas Micro and Mecca finalize joint venture

Pointe-Claire QC-based custom manufacturing specialists Atlas Micro Electronics has finalized a joint venture with Hong Kong-based vertically integrated EMS provider Mecca Electronics Co. Ltd., whereby Atlas Micro will become reflagged as Mecca Manufacturing and responsible for all business matters in North America. Both companies have had a strategic and symbiotic partnership that developed successfully over the past seven years. Mecca, having multiple factories located in Dongguan China, has been in operation for more than 25-years. With the new arrangement in place, it ensures customers are dealing directly with the manufacturing facilities and resources locally as well as globally, according to Tony Fama, executive VP for Atlas Micro Electronics. “Our ability to provide the best manufacturing services with proven quality, renowned on- time delivery and clear communication is our strength, which positions us with ‘preferred vendor’ status at many customers”, says Fama. “Our manufacturing strategy ensures our customers’ products will have the best of class quality, cost effectiveness and most importantly, meet the necessary timelines to satisfy your market demands. Whether our customers select us for metal fabrication, plastic mould injection and/or pcb assembly, you eliminate the need to have multiple suppliers manage your requirements in these areas,” Fama notes.

Protocase Inc., Sydney NS, is now providing in-house chromate chemical conversion coating, commonly known as ‘chem film’. This treatment is applied to aluminum, zinc and magnesium in order to improve corrosion resistance, and to provide reliable electrical conductivity. In electronic applications, it is often used to ensure reliable ground connections to aluminum enclosures and chassis, while also serving as an effective pre-treatment for powdercoat. Protocase’s chemical conversion coating process meets a number of specifications and qualifies as Type II, Class 1a and 3 under MIL-DTL-5541F. It is RoHS compatible and free from toxic hexavalent chrome. Because the coating is applied in house, it can be specified on Protocase-fabricated parts without adding extra lead time. Protocase customers now have access to fully finished chem-filmed aluminum enclosures and components in as little as 2-3 days. Protocase will provide rapid coating service on customer-supplied parts, also with lead times as low as 2-3 days, depending on quantity. “Our new in-house facility is optimized for our batch sizes and integrated into our real time job control system. So our customers can now have chem film coating without any extra lead time, and we also will be passing along the money we save by avoiding the shipping, handling and overhead costs that come with dealing with a third-party,” says Dr. Douglas Milburn, VP sales and marketing, Protocase.

To meet the needs of its growth pace, Tri-M Technologies Inc. has moved its business operations to a redeveloped facility that provides a layout specifically designed for increasing systems integration capabilities, developing software solutions, efficiently building products and providing a dedicated test area. There’s also more office space to account for the recent increase in staff and to accommodate future hiring, according to company president and CEO John Diack. “Our existing (Vancouver) location was suitable while we were operating as two separate entities, but now that we’ve merged we’re finding the physical divide to be a functional challenge to the new business that puts limitations on our growth plans”, Diack says. Tri-M, a developer of power supplies and computing solutions for embedded applications, is now located at 101 – 1530 Kingsway Avenue, Port Coquitlam BC. “We’ve designed the layout of the new location so our teams can communicate easily with a logical work flow between departments. We were able to set up the entire facility, keeping our industry and product development needs in mind, by creating anti-static environments and areas designed for testing and development,” says Diack.

Power Supplies/Medical Applications

Dc-dc converters and

electromagnetic interference

By Joe Sullivan, product marketing manager, Vicor Corp.

Electronic systems throughout the world are powered by direct current (usually after ac rectification), which in most cases is converted by dc-dc converters to the voltages needed by each part of the system. Today, power conversion is usually accomplished by high-density dc-dc converter components based on highfrequency switching technologies. Efficient high-frequency operation has long been recognized as the key to achieving high-power density and improved performance in switch-mode converters. High-frequency operation translates into smaller magnetics and capacitors, faster response times, lower noise levels and smaller filters. Unfortunately, however, all dc-dc converters generate electromagnetic interference (EMI) or noise. This noise - common mode, differential mode and radiated noise - can vary widely among dc-dc converters from supplier to supplier and topology to topology. The reasons for this are diverse, but they include fundamental differences in the way noise is produced. Although many different topologies are used, none is superior to all others in every respect. Some applications have requirements that are best satisfied by a specific topology. Although the number of designs, or topologies, of dc-dc converter components certainly number in the hundreds, two dominate: pulse-width modulation (PWM) and quasi-resonant zero-current switching (ZCS). In any case, full consideration of the large number of topologies available could be a daunting task, so it is helpful to consider the noise performance of the two main topological classes. Specifically, a comparison is made between dc-dc converters using fixed frequency PWM and variable frequency quasi-resonant ZCS. PWM converters are power density limited because they inherently trade off efficiency against operating frequency. The problem is “switching losses.” Heat is generated in the switching element each time it discontinuously makes and breaks inductive current flow during its brief turn-on and turn-off transitions. Power dissipation, due to switching losses, increases directly with operating frequency in PWM converters until it becomes a dominant loss factor. At that point, efficiency declines rapidly and the thermal and electrical stresses on the switch element become unmanageable. Losses attributable to non-zero-current-switching result in a ‘frequency barrier’, which limits achievable power density in conventional converters. Quasi-resonant ZCS converters overcome the frequency barrier by implementing a forward converter switching at zero-current. Each switch cycle delivers a quantized ‘packet’ of energy to the converter output, with switch turn-on and turn-off occurring at zero-current. Zero-current-switching results in an essentially lossless switch. ZCS converters can operate at frequencies in excess of 1MHz. By eliminating the fast current disFIG. 1: Current waveforms produced by zero-current switching continuities characteristic and pulse-width modulation of conventional topologies,

FIG. 2: Current waveforms and spectral content for PWM (top) and ZCS (bottom). Note: waveforms not drawn to scale.

zero-current-switching results in a virtually loss less transfer of energy from input to output with dramatically reduced levels of conducted and radiated noise. The noise generated by the switch is a major difference between PWM and ZCS converters. With the pulse-width modulation approach, the input voltage is switched at a constant frequency (usually several hundred kilohertz) to create a pulse train. The width of the pulses is adjusted to provide the necessary power to the load at the correct voltage. At full load, the current waveform looks much like a square wave (see Figure 1.) Many designers intuitively assume that it’s easier to design a filter for a fixed frequency converter than for a variable frequency converter. In actuality, the opposite is true. The perception is, in all likelihood, attributable to the term ‘fixed frequency’, which is actually a misnomer. Both topologies, in fact, have frequency elements that are more or less fixed and frequency elements that vary as a function of operating conditions. Figure 1 compared the waveforms of the current flowing through the main switch. In a module using a quasi-resonant topology, the pulse width, T1, is fixed, while the repetition rate, T2, is variable, and in a module using PWM, the opposite is true; the repetition rate is fixed and the pulse width is variable. Each of these topologies generates characteristic noise spectra as shown in Figure 2. In the variable-frequency design, however, there are no high-frequency components associated with the leading and falling edges of the current waveform, T3, because it is essentially a half-wave rectified sine wave. The spectral content of the variable frequency waveform is lower in amplitude and contained in a narrower band. In PWM converters, most of the energy is at the fixed frequency and odd multiples (harmonics) of it. A 100kHz PWM converter will have most of its conducted noise at 100kHz and some at 300 and 500kHz. They also have significant harmonics at or above 10-30 MHz due to the shape of the current waveform, i.e., high di/dts that excite parasitic elements within the converter. The input conducted filter has to be sized to handle maximum power at 100kHz. In the fixed frequency waveform, the spectral content is higher in amplitude and spread over a broader range of harmonics. It is clear that an effective first step to minimize noise generated by the dc-dc converter is to select a topology - such as zero-current switching - that is inherently lower in common mode noise. Incidentally, some products should be avoided in noise-sensitive applications. Control devices mounted on copper plates, for example, create parasitic capacitance from primary referenced control devices to secondary referenced control devices through the copper base, resulting in high common-mode noise. Although component power modules usually incorporate some internal input and output filtering, additional external filtering is often needed to meet either system requirements or agency specifications. For example, FCC and European agencies specify the allowable levels of power supply noise that may be conducted back into the ac line. Many designers tackle these issues on their own, but most dc-dc converter manufacturers provide detailed application. In addition, some dc-dc converter suppliers also offer ac front ends and EMI filters as modular accessories. These filters not only save time; they are a means of risk prevention as well. The EMI filter is designed to work with the supplier’s converter modules, and, assuming proper layout, the combination is certified to meet the specified EMC directives. World battery demand to reach $109-billion

http://ept.hotims.com/34481-11

Global primary and secondary battery demand is forecast to climb 4.8 percent per year to $109 billion by 2014, according to the World Batteries report, published by The Freedonia Group Inc., Cleveland-based industry market research firm. China will remain the world’s largest national battery market by far, as the country’s position as a global leader in portable electronics production supports an $11.5-billion increase in battery demand from 2009 to 2014. India will register the strongest sales growth of any national market, supported by healthy increases in manufacturing activity, personal consumption expenditures and motor vehicles in use. Gains will also be strong in a number of smaller countries with developing economies. Battery demand in the developed areas of the US, Japan and Western Europe is projected to increase at rates below global averages through 2014, but economic recovery in these areas will support a $4.7 billion overall increase in battery sales. Non-lead-acid secondary battery demand increases will outpace sales of primary and lead-acid secondary batteries through 2014. The market for lithium ion and lithium polymer batteries and, to a lesser extent, nickel-metal hydride batteries will be spurred by the immense popularity of portable electronic devices such as cell phones, digital audio players, gaming systems and laptops. The rapid growth in hybrid vehicle production will also boost demand for these batteries.

RoHS recast approved

by European parliament by Claigan Environmental Inc., Kanata ON

Towards the end of 2010, the parliament of the European Union voted to adopt the new RoHS Directive, which now includes a much larger scope of products. The recast ‘Restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment directive’ now involves a process for the addition of new restricted materials, more stringent enforcement and recall regimes and adoption of the CE mark. Some of the new itemsEP&T_Solar_Mar2011.pdf include medical devices monitoring and control equipment. 2/17/2011 1:18:24and PM

The principle changes from the RoHS Directive (2002/95/EC) • Repeal of original RoHS Directive • Increase and clarification of products under scope • New process for exemptions • Recognition of and coordination with REACH Regulation (EC - No 1907/2006) • “Producer” definition replaced with standard importer and manufacturer definitions • Process for increasing scope of restricted materials • Adoption of CE marking • Declaration of Conformity • New enforcement, documentation,

recall, and authority notification requirements • Appointment of an authorized representative • New timelines

Repeal of original RoHS directive RoHS recast will not be an addendum or addition to the current RoHS Directive. When the new RoHS Directive comes into force it will be the only RoHS Directive. Any definitions or requirements of the original RoHS Directive will be void and the only requirements will be those contained in the RoHS Recast. Meanwhile, until the new RoHS Directive comes into force, the current RoHS Directive will continue to be valid. As expected, RoHS recast has added medical devices, and control & monitoring equipment to the scope of RoHS. Both medical devices and control & monitoring equipment were split into two groups for entry into scope of the RoHS Directive. Medical equipment will be required to be RoHS compliant three years after entry into force of RoHS recast (as early as January 2014). In-vitro medical devices will be required to be RoHS compliant five years after entry into force of RoHS recast (as early as January 2016). Monitoring and control equipment will be required to be RoHS compliant three years after entry into force of RoHS recast (as early as January 2014). Industrial monitoring and control equipment will be required to be RoHS compliant six years after entry into force of RoHS recast (as early as January 2017). An 11th equipment category was added to the RoHS directive. The new category handles Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) not covered under the previous 10 RoHS and WEEE categories. EEE that fall under the group 11 ‘miscellaneous’ category are included in the scope of RoHS recast. The original RoHS directive used the complicated term of ‘producer’ to identify who was responsible for RoHS compliance. RoHS recast does away with the term ‘producer’ and uses more specific terms and requirements for manufacturers, importers, and distributors. These terms are more consistent with other CE marking directives. One of the compromises required to pass RoHS recast was the removal of Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), Bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) and Dibutylphthalate (DBP). These substances were included for restriction in previous drafts of RoHS recast, but were removed from the final text. Instead a process for adding new substances to RoHS recast was added with these substances being prioritized for review for addition. Unlike the original RoHS directive, new substances can be added to the RoHS recast without creating new legislation. RoHS recast, like most single market directives, has adopted CE marking for declaration of conformity to EU regulations. RoHS recast contains standard CE requirements for marking of the product, declaration of conformity, and sanctions for improper use. To be consistent with other CE marking directives, RoHS recast has the standard declaration of conformity requirements. The declaration format is specified in Annex VI of RoHS recast. Additional information, beyond the declaration of conformity, can be requested by competent authorities. RoHS recast is far more specific on documentation, recall and notification of the authorities than the original RoHS directive. Upon a reasoned request, manufacturers and importers must provide continued on page 20

with Central’s broad range of TVS products. Why do discriminating designers select Central Semiconductor’s TVS products?

Today’s sophisticated electronic components and systems are susceptible to damage induced by electrical energy surges. Potentially destructive surges have many sources such as lightning strikes, inductive load switching or electrostatic discharge caused by human contact. Whatever the source, Central Semiconductor has a transient voltage suppressor (TVS) to prevent critical damage.

competent authorities with all the information and documentation necessary to demonstrate the conformity of the EEE, in a language which can be easily understood by that authority. Manufacturers and importers shall cooperate with that authority, at its request, on any action taken to ensure compliance with the provisions of this Directive for EEE that they have placed on the market. Manufacturers must keep the technical documentation and the EC declaration of conformity for 10 years after the EEE has been placed on the market, ensure that procedures are in place for series production to remain in conformity and ensure changes in product design or characteristics shall be adequately taken into account. Manufacturers and importers must keep a register of non-conforming EEE and product recalls and keep distributors informed. Manufacturers, importers and distributors who consider or have reason to believe that an EEE which they have placed on the market is not in conformity with this Directive must immediately take the necessary corrective measures to bring that EEE into conformity, to withdraw it or recall it, and immediately inform the competent national authorities of the Member States. The registration, recall, and mandatory informing of authorities of non-conforming EEE are significant changes in the model of enforcement in RoHS recast from the original RoHS Directive.

New Timelines RoHS recast does not enter into force until the 20th day after publication in the Official Journal of the EU. Publication

may be as early as end of 2010 with entry of force in January 2011. Some projections push the publication date back to late first quarter 2011. The principle elements will not have the force of law on companies or individuals until written into national law by the individual member states (no later than July 2012 based on a January 2011 entry into force of the new directive). The inclusion of medical devices, invitro medical devices, monitoring and control equipment, and industrial monitoring and control equipment will be three, five, three, and six years respectively from the entry into force of the new RoHS Directive.

Conclusion RoHS recast provides plenty of factors for companies to digest. None of the new timelines are particularly aggressive, but the improved and expanded enforcement, recall, and notification of national authorities’ provisions should increase the attention provided to RoHS by companies currently and soon to be under scope. It should be noted that the new RoHS directive’s attention to the REACH Regulation further substantiates the EU’s commitment to the REACH regulation. It would be foolish, at this time, for companies in the electronics industry not to give proper attention to the SVHC requirement of the REACH Regulation. solar ‘boom’ in Ontario

By Rocco Laricchia P.Eng, technical marketing manager, Electro Sonic Inc.

The Ontario government wants to be a leader in the global renewable energy race. And, as the Green Energy Act calls for renewable energy to replace coal and natural gas power plants, ClearSky Advisors have predicted that the solar PV (photovoltaic) industry will create approximately 70,000 new jobs and attract approximately $7.8B US in private capital over the next five years. Feed In Tariff or FIT, is a globally accepted incentive program that pays businesses, educational institutes, land developers and residential owners to build and maintain an energy generation facility and sell the power to their local distribution company (LDC), such as Toronto Hydro, Mississauga Hydro, etc. The Ontario Power Authority (OPA) is offering up to 80.2 cents per kilowatthour for rooftop installations less than 10kW (known as MicroFIT) with guaranteed 20 year contracts. Larger projects, up to 10MW, fall under the FIT program. Optimally, power is generated as close as possible to where it is used to minimize transmission losses, and in Ontario the greatest demand is in the GTA. Large solar farms like those found in southwestern and eastern Ontario are unlikely in the GTA due to expensive land but there is another solution: thousands of commercial and residential rooftops. Just like in Germany, the global solar PV leader where 80% of their 9,000MW of solar generation is from rooftop installations, this will eventually be the backbone of success for Ontario’s solar program. Already there are over 20,000 MicroFIT

applications in the approval process with the OPA. Approximately 10,000 have been approved, yet only approximately 1,000 have been installed. As winter comes to a close in 2011, we will begin to notice a drastic change in the landscape of Ontario, as thousands of solar installations take place in Ontario. Electro Sonic Inc. has identified that many independent electrical contractors and roofing professionals see an opportunity to expand their business and participate as a PV installer for smaller residential and commercial rooftop installations from 1kw to 100KW. In 2010, Ontario has surpassed New Jersey as the second largest photovoltaic generating market second only to the mature California market. Projections for 2011 predict that Ontario will rival California in the number of new installations measured in Mega Watts. There are currently not enough skilled PV installers in Ontario to support such a rapid growth and Electro Sonic has positioned itself as a one-stop-shop for top quality solar components, as well as Ontario compliant pre-engineered installation kits designed to perform optimally in Ontario’s harsh environment. These components and kits will allow many independent contractors the ability to quote and install PV solutions quickly with minimal understanding of the complex knowledge required to engineer a total solution. As the residential market grows, these independent installers will provide up to 80% of all new installations in Ontario. ENCLOSURES Built in 2-3 days! CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE: Astronics AES Test Lab Builds Better Equipment With Less Work Dewey Colvin is an electrical engineer with over 20 years of experience in avionics. He runs the System Integration Lab at Astronics AES, a Redmond, Washington based subsidiary of Astronics Corporation. Astronics AES is a leader in custom rugged and reliable electrical power systems for commercial and military aircraft, as well as missiles. Mr. Colvin’s lab provides an environment that simulates the conditions found on real aircraft, in order to check out and test the company’s products. As one might expect, rigorous testing is especially important for aircraft power systems, as electrical power is essential for keeping aircraft flying and keeping passengers and crew safe. Like most testing laboratories, they heavily depend on custom built test equipment, and as a result, designing and building this gear (and the enclosures in which it is housed) forms an important part of their work. The devices they build are almost exclusively low-volume, and often unique one-offs. Before working with Protocase, Mr. Colvin and his staff relied on local sheet metal shops to build their custom enclosures. But these shops were usually less than enthusiastic about such small jobs, and had cumbersome coordination of drawings and information from his electronics-oriented staff. Their lead times varied dramatically, and they also lacked finishing touch capabilities, such as silkscreening and painting. As a result, Mr. Colvin’s staff found themselves doing more work to get less-than optimal results. For example, staff usually ended up doing things like hand-applying adhesive labels on front panels, giving results which, although functional, were somewhat home-made looking. Recently, Mr. Colvin and his staff began to use Protocase Designer® 3D custom enclosure design software. This free CAD software allows users to quickly and easily design custom enclosures (including cutouts, fasteners, and silkscreens), get instant online price quotations, and then have their design manufactured in 2-3 days. According to Mr. Colvin, “Protocase Designer is a simple tool that is very easy to use. We have plenty of access to full-featured CAD software like Solidworks, but my staff is trained in electronics, and these fully featured mechanical design packages have steep learning curves. Protocase Designer is so easy to use that my staff can be up and designing electronics enclosures right away. Its speed of design, and online price quotations allow us to work through design iterations, and optimize for cost, in a way that we never could before.” Mr. Colvin says that working with Protocase has had a positive impact on his lab. “We now have easy access to fully finished enclosures, with quality powdercoat and silkscreen, even at one-off quantities. As a result, our equipment racks look more professional. This has a positive impact during customer visits, both in the way customers view us, and in the confidence that they have in our capabilities. And the best part is, we spend fewer man-hours getting there.”

Switches & Circuit Protection

Rough environments require appropriate selection of circuit breakers for equipment Features that should be taken into account when selecting an appropriate circuit breaker Actuators suited for rough environments?

Thermal circuit breakers for equipment (CBE) protect engines and equipment against electrical overload and short circuits. Machine tools and construction equipment, for example concrete tampers, high-pressure cleaners, mobile generators, welding equipment and circular saws, require that the circuit breaker is suitable for the demanding operating environment. Conventional circuit breakers, with push-button operation, have limitations when it comes to these applications; therefore the equipment manufacturers search for solutions of a circuit breaker with the following features: • Operable with gloves • Modular design with 1, 2, 3-pole options • Integrated function of a manual On/ Off • Positive trip-free mechanism • Compact design • Fast and safe connectivity • Wide temperature range • Wide range of current ratings • Customer-specific designs in color, form and labeling • Complete approval from VDE, cURus and CCC Very often industrial gloves are worn for operating machine tools and construction equipment. This means that the appropriate circuit breaker must be able to operate safely and quickly with gloves (Figure 1). In contrast to rocker or pushbutton actuators, which do not guarantee safe and quick operation with gloves, a rotary knob is optimal. As a matter of direct personal safety, it is therefore critical that a circuit breaker can be operated fast and reliably. Modular design I n c r e a s i n g l y, manufacturers provide modular circuit breaker designs to cover a broad spectrum of applications. This means that the same type of circuit breakers are available in single, double and triple pole versions, with the capability of being mounted in different panel thicknesses (Figure 2). A well-developed FIG. 2: Same type of circuit breaker design with different functionality

circuit breaker offers variations in circuit protection, such as 1, 2 or 3-poles to provide flexibility in design. These features accommodate a variety of application specifications. Can be used as a manual On/Off switch To keep manufacturing costs of the equipment as low as possible, and to reduce the number of components, the ‘On/Off’ switching must be integrated into the overload and short circuit protection. What is a positive trip-free mechanism? If the circuit breaker trips due to overload or short circuit, then it must be switched manually to reset. With a positive trip-free mechanism the circuit breaker is designed mechanically in such a way that it cannot be manipulated to prevent the tripping of the circuit breaker, even with the use of adhesive tape or makeshift devices. Consequently, the positive trip-free mechanism cannot automatically re-switch, and guarantees the best possible protection of the operating personnel and the machine.

Compact design

Following the current megatrend of the electronics industry, namely ‘miniaturization’, circuit breakers too must offer increasingly compact designs. Both of the requirements, including a unit that has the ability to operate with industrial gloves, and one that sports a compact design, appear to be opposite at first glance. However, the differentiation should be made between the actuating feature and the actual circuit breaker package. So, the rotary knob can be resized to enable a safe operation, while the circuit breaker itself remains compact, occupying minimum space in the equipment. The circuit breaker must provide a method of connection that is quick and safe. Faston terminals avoid tedious soldering when mounting and dismounting the circuit breaker. Making the connections with standard quick-connect terminals is not only fast, but safe. Additionally, quick connections allow for easy replacement of the unit in the ‘field’.

FIG. 1: Fast and reliable operation even with industrial gloves

FIG. 3: Circuit breaker, customized according to specific equipment requirements

to provide the current variations in the same housing.

Approvals

Customer specific The equipment manufacturer wants to have flexibility in design, and looks for circuit breaker manufacturers who provide various options such as form, color and labeling of the circuit breaker unit. Only a few manufacturers offer circuit breakers that can be customized according to specific requirements (Figure 3). A wide range of rated currents ensures a broad spectrum of applications. Rated currents ranging from 0.05A to 20A offer significant advantage in that different equipment, with very low current requirements, can be fitted with the same type of circuit breaker. However, technically it means that the manufacturer must completely master the manufacturing process of direct and indirect heating of the bimetal, and be able

In a global environment, equipment is manufactured and potentially sold in all five continents. Consequently, this means that you and your equipment must have the appropriate approvals, which can be time consuming and cost intensive. Equipment manufacturers must look to circuit breaker manufacturers who carry all relevant component level approvals to shorten time-to-market and costs.

Conclusion

A circuit breaker, which is supposed to work safe and reliably even in the roughest environments, must possess the features necessary to meet these demands. The physical requirement of a ‘high temperature range’ for example requires a large and finely tuned range of rated currents. On the other, hand a wide range rated currents is contradictory to compact design. A circuit breaker manufacturer who can fulfill all these requirements, and fulfills the required standards at the same time, must have immense know-how and decades of experience.

Temperature range There are potentially extreme temperatures, plus or minus in environments where machine tools and construction equipment operate. Construction machines are used at very low temperatures during winter and at very high temperatures during summer. Here the equipment manufacturer requires high reliability over a broad temperature range such as –30C to +60C.

The many applications that can be laser cut.

L

Laser cutting, a.k.a. digital die cutting, uses high-powered lasers to vaporize materials in the lasers’ beam path. The powering on and off of the laser beam and the way in which the beam path is directed towards the substrate effects the specific cuts that the artwork requires. While cut away parts are vaporized, the hand labor or complicated extraction methods required for small part scrap removal, is eliminated. These basic facts about laser cutting are as true today as they were when laser cutting systems were first put to practical industrial uses in the ’80s. However, recent advances in laser cutting technology and especially those that relate to the sophistication of the software engineering underlying laser cutting controls, have created dramatic improvements in the type of outputs that can be expected from laser cutters. Today’s lower cost laser cutting systems made from less expensive components have far superior capabilities to the expensive systems that were designed and engineered only a few years ago. At the top end, state-of-art laser cutting systems are able to consistently cut far more intricate designs in a wider range of substrates and with tighter tolerances than ever before. The challenge to those making investments in laser cutting technology is to source machines that are well matched to application requirements. One can still find laser cutting systems in the marketplace that force compromises in quality or production output that should not be brooked in light of engineering advances in laser cutting technology. On the other hand, those with more straightforward application requirements are often wellserved by lower cost models of laser cutting systems that are powerful and versatile enough for the jobs at hand. In this article, we will discuss how to match today’s laser cutting technology to application requirements and offer insights into how various features of laser cutting systems translate into capabilities for quality and throughput as summarized in Figure 1 — Laser Cutting Technology Comparison Chart.

http://ept.hotims.com/34481-27

Matching laser cutting technology to application requirements By the Engineering Department at Spartanics Inc.

A preliminary step to sourcing the right laser cutting technology is to first determine if laser cutting capabilities are a good addition to your finishing department. There are numerous advantages to laser cutters, as compared to tool-based die cutting systems. Most of these advantages derive from the tool-free nature of laser cutters. Because there are no tools, there are no costs for tools or production delays for time to make tools. This is the major reason why laser cutters provide a rapid prototyping niche for those that use them. Laser cutting systems are called digital die cutters because they can take any vector-based digital image and import it into their operating software to set up a job. Today’s best-in-class laser cutting systems can complete set up from these imported digital images in just a few minutes. The ‘digital die cutter’ term that is used interchangeably with laser cutting speaks to this advantage that tool-free cutting systems provide, especially when used in combination with digital printers. This combination allows one to move from artwork to finished product in just a few hours, or even less for very short runs. In tool-based mechanical cutting

there are always intrinsic limitations from the physical contact between the cutting edge and the material being cut. A laser cutting systems bypasses that situation, which makes them able to cut many materials that are very difficult or impossible for tool-based cutting systems to handle. For example, cutting adhesives is far easier with laser cutting systems because of the tendency of adhesives to literally gum up the works in mechanical cutting systems. Similarly, the ability of tool-free laser cutting systems to reliably handle thin substrates is a big advantage. In these thin substrate applications, cutto-print registration is not constrained by the physical limitations of weighty dies interacting with flimsy substrates. Another example is in the better handling of abrasive materials, which literally wear mechanical dies down such that cutting abrasives with mechanical cutting systems is often prohibitively expensive because dies have to be continuously replaced. Here too, tool-free laser cutting systems sidesteps this problem altogether. The relative ease with which laser cutting systems create special features is also a considerable continued on page 32

advantage. Perforations, score lines, kiss cuts, consecutive numbering, creasing, personalizing and other special features are done as a matter of course by laser cutting systems. This is especially the case with today’s laser cutting technology that uses far superior software engineering to precisely control the movement of laser beams making cuts. In fact, the only relevant physical limitation in laser cutting systems is the width of the laser beam - for example in 200mm x 200mm working fields or greater the spot size can be as small as 210 microns in best-in-class systems. While any die-based cutting system would have difficulties in producing corners that are less than 30-degrees, this is not in any way challenging for a laser cutting system. Also, laser cutting technology allows one to skip the step of creating mechanical knicks to facilitate parts extraction as is typically required with a tool-based cutting mechanism. There are limitations to laser cutting systems, as with any technology, but also there are mistaken notions as to what these limitations are. In some quarters laser cutters are thought of only as prototyping tools and not up to the requirements of full production runs. While there are many applications where laser cutting may be slower as compared to platen presses, rotary die cutters or opticallyregistered gap presses, they are considerably faster than the earlier laser cutting systems that used to predominate. In fact, most users of today’s laser cutting systems ARE using them for full production line capabilities. For one thing, today’s laser cutters are generally galvo

(galvanometer) type lasers that make minute adjustments in mirror angles to move laser beams around artwork. This galvo mechanism is considerably faster than gantry systems with XY plotters that physically move lasers as a whole or the whole sheet of material being cut, not just the laser beams. Newer galvo technology takes this speed improvement to the next level by fine tuning software to shave milliseconds off of most operations, with a combined effect of significant speed improvements. The higher the wattage of the laser, the faster the cutting proceeds in most applications. The difference today is that faster 200watt and 400 watt lasers that were prohibitively expensive five or so years ago are now available at competitive prices. These new lasers also make a higher quality laser beam, which in turn ensures that cutting quality is maintained even at higher cutting speeds. The upshot of all these combined speed improvements is that today’s laser cutters do far more than prototype samples; they are used for full production runs without creating production bottlenecks. (Note: Manufacturers‘ claims on linear cutting speed are not meaningful in most instances. Actual cutting speed is determined both by the complexity of the artwork and ability of the control software to optimize cutting in that geometry, as explained below.) Another misconception that one still finds is that laser cutting is a dangerous operation that burdens a workplace with safety risks. Though it may seem counterintuitive to some, laser cutting systems are in many ways a safer alternative to tool-based cutting systems. The initial installation of a laser cutting system takes care to eliminate the chance of stray beams creating workplace hazards if workers do not wear safety glasses. Toolbased systems, on the other hand, pose a continual risk of severe worker injury if they are not operated properly. Although such accidents are rare, they can be catastrophic. Costly injuries to tooling are somewhat more common, such as when technicians leave tiny screws in a cutting area that end up destroying the custom tooling.
