Steve Jobs leaves electronic imprint on industry There is little doubt of the impact Steve Jobs, the iconic co-founder of Apple Inc. has left on the consumer electronics space. Almost as recognizable as the Apple brand itself, Jobs truly represented a marketing giant. While Jobs himself admitted that long-time biz partner Steve Wozniuk was the true engineering brains behind the computing giant – it was clearly Jobs who drove the marketing bus. In fact, it is incredible when you consider Apple’s business model. For most supplier / customer relationships within the electronics OEM sphere, it is the customer that demands change and redesign from its suppliers. However, this tech titan was masterful at creating products that consumers desired. Remembered for - among many other things – was his showmanship and larger-than-life public persona. In Jobs, Apple had an unparalleled marketing guru. His return to the helm of Apple after a 10-year absence and its corporate resurgence only reinforced his importance in guiding the computing behemoth. There’s little doubt that Apple has done better than most of its competitors while playing in the challenging, commodity business, selling PCs, digital music players, phones and tablets - products susceptible to severe price erosion. Much of that success can be attributed to Apple’s ability to not only selling
a product, but providing an experience. In fact, Jobs proved that it was possible to compete without concerning himself so much with the issues of razor thin margins. He demonstrated that by going the extra mile to create products that truly resonate with buyers, they will gladly pay a premium and stand in store lineups to buy them. Much has already been penned and debated about the man who transcended electronics. According to biographer Walter Isaacson, Jobs believed that technology was individually empowering. With pending tablet price wars looming and critics underwhelmed by the recent release of the iPhone 4S, Apple will no doubt face the challenge of changing tides of the consumer electronics market – albeit without its omnipresent leader. So much of electronics has been and will continue to be about engineering and only time will tell if the man’s legacy will continue to shape the technological landscape. Fast growing Alberta MEMS company competes against global giants Preciseley is a fast growing “fabless” component company, working with third parties to manufacture in-house designed products which are sold to the global marketplace. Based out of Edmonton, Alberta, their core business has been selling MEMS mirrors that they design in-house. MEMS (micro-electroWest Tech mechanical systems) are a technology platform where miniature mechanical Columnist, and electro-mechanical structures are made using the micro-fabrication equipSohail Kamal ment originally developed for the microelectronics industry. Preciseley sells these mirrors principally as variable optical attenuators, tuneable filters, and optical switches for the telecommunications industry, though they also have potential for use in displays and optical imaging applications. I recently caught up with Steve Buswell, product manager at Preciseley, and asked him the following: What makes Preciseley so successful? “Customer demand has been the driving factor in our growth,” says Buswell, “though just recently we have also garnered funding from provincial and federal government sources to take on projects that strategically add value to our existing products.” What is your niche – what size companies do you serve? Preciseley’s customers tend to be large manufacturers in the telecommunications module and component industry. As a small company they work with partners and customers to ensure that they can deliver the quality of products which are expected in such a demanding and aggressive industry. Anything new coming up? The focus of the company is to expand their patent portfolio and refine the underlying technology. “We don’t have any new product announcements that we can share publicly but expect soon to demonstrate some new product applications through our website at www.preciseley.com.” says Buswell. Preciseley will have a booth at SPIE Photonics West and OFC/NFOEC conferences in the upcoming year. Any words of advice for a budding tech entrepreneur? “My impression is that we have done well because we have been targeted in our approach. We have picked our focus and we have carved that niche extremely well. In a demanding field such as this success is derived from excellence,” says Buswell. Many start-ups would learn this lesson well, as Preciseley is in direct competition with global companies, so they have to be focused to adequately satisfy their customers. At times, it is advisable to avoid the temptation of accepting proposals that do not fit your competitive strengths, which provide short term revenue, but in the long run, erode your core competencies.

Power Supplies & Batteries
Green is not always black & white Sometimes it’s RED! By Jerry Rosenstein, president & COO, Pioneer Magnetics Inc.
Green is a great colour. The movie industry has used green slime to frighten adults. Kermit the Frog has become a positive icon for children. Editors frequently use green as the new primary color on magazine covers and at the same time, advertisers, regardless of the product, find ways to incorporate green into the message. The variety of shades and hues has conjured up a feeling of life, a sense of tranquility and, perhaps, best of all, money. More recently, green equates to ecology and efficiency. Industries associated with pollution, chemical run-offs and contaminated land, tout ‘green’ changes in corporate philosophies. Corporate CEO’s claim innovated technologies geared to clean the environment and meet new or stricter standards. The auto industry is in overdrive with its new hybrid, electric or battery operated vehicles. Provinces are offering incentives to homeowners willing to convert to a solar house. Companies not normally associated with green technologies have jumped onto the bandwagon. EcoTravel agencies are now attracting new clients. Office supply companies now sell green packing material such as green ‘peanuts’ and green recycled paper products. Even power supply companies have entered the EcoArena.
Green is the color of choice! Several years ago, Pioneer Magnetics (PMI) recognized that its customers would be looking for innovative ways to reduce costs. Procuring greater material quantities, evolving to LEAN manufacturing techniques, automating and producing product offshore would not be sufficient to meet required cost reduction targets. PMI determined that a redesign of current and future power supplies geared for more efficiency might provide the desired cost reductions, as well as
meet future green initiatives. Most high-end switching power supplies have efficiency ratings in the 88% to 90% range. Some power supply companies have struggled to get product efficiencies to 91% or even 92%. Like trying to run that sub four-minute mile or break the sound barrier, each incremental step of efficiency improvement takes a significant amount of time, experimentation, money, energy and perseverance. Eventually, that evasive threshold is crossed. With standards continually evolving, the effort to traverse that > 92% efficiency barrier may soon be upon us. From a historical standpoint and heralded as ‘the big efficiency breakthrough,’ the 1970’s saw the use of Gallium arsenide in the manufacturing of semiconductors. Because of its higher bandwidth, it had great promise for high frequency electronics. Although widely used in the microwave industry, optical electronics and for making high frequency ICs, it was deemed that the next application would result in higher voltage components with higher speeds than silicon – a perfect fit for power electronics. Unfortunately, the Gallium arsenide-based power components turned out to be more expensive than anticipated. This was supposed to be the foundation for “the device of the future.” With silicon still dominating the market, there was another technological breakthrough. It was Silicon carbide.
Traditionally, power components are manufactured using straight silicon. Once again, there was a large marketing campaign by the semi-conductor industry claiming that power supply designers were choosing Silicon carbide-based components as the best design approach for the next generation of power supplies. Semiconductor manufacturers touted that characteristics such as high breakdown electrical field strength, wider band gaps and higher current densities translated into a smaller, less expensive and a better quality solution for those power supply companies striving to meet green initiatives, increased efficiencies and lower costs for the end-user. The SemiCon manufacturers even stated that NextGen (silicon carbide) semiconductors [YBK1] would not only become the platform for power supplies but for other green products as well. So, if the silicon carbide-based components were so attractive, where are the brass bands? Why aren’t the flags waving? Why isn’t there a long line of power supply customers around the block for that super efficient power supply? Once again, the technical soothsayers were wrong. Assume that power components represent about 20% of the bill of material

To put the higher silicon carbide cost in perspective and what it means to the power supply customer, assume these hypothetical domestic cost projections.
cost for a typical switching power supply design. Using a PMI product as a reference, it turns out that for a given family of power supplies having the same power range (wattage), the cost for the silicon carbide power components may be 3X or even > 4X more expensive than the conventional, straight silicon components. And that’s when PMI gets “quantity” quotes from its supplier. Two approaches were used to calculate cost per watt – a 40% margin and a material multiplier. Interestingly, there is no industry standard used to calculate a selling price. Some power supply companies use a margin based on material costs (only), a combination of material and labor costs or, in a few cases, a multiplier against the material cost. There may not be a right or wrong approach. The key, of course, is profitability on a particular program. In any event, it’s clear that the cost of Silicon carbide is a significant factor in pricing out a power supply.
“It’s not easy being green” Besides the Silicon carbide-based component cost increase, there are other issues. Similar to Gallium arsenide, Silicon carbide has a higher band gap and the forward drop losses (for our industry) are not acceptable if efficiency, size and temperature ratings are critical. Size or the overall dimension of a product now comes into play. Not surprisingly, the market is ignoring technical reality with its new efficiency specifications. The end-user continues to pressure the power supply manufacturer to reduce the overall dimension of a power supply, as well as the cost, in the same breath expects better efficiencies. Unfortunately, there is an inverse relationship between size and efficiency. With improved efficiency, there are indirect temperature issues. More efficient power supplies mean less heat. However, the smaller the power supply, the harder it is to dissipate heat. Therefore, the (indirect) increased temperatures require more heat sinking. More heat sinking requires more aluminum – all of which requires a larger product case to handle the dissipation of heat. Using some of PMI’s products as an example: • 8 kW = 75 kilohertz = small package (387.5 sq. inches) • 10 kW = 50 kilohertz = slightly larger package (437.3 sq. inches) • 15 kW to 30 kW = 15 kilohertz = larger package (2018.9 sq. inches) Then, there is the frequency issue coming into play. Higher frequencies usually result in smaller magnetic components, but the switching losses may reduce efficiency. Therefore, by reducing the frequency, efficiencies may improve but the product will then result in larger magnetic components. To further exasperate the situation, switching causes a loss of joules or power. The key, of course, is to minimize cost-increase percentages, finding ways to keep the power supply from growing in size while striving to achieve the required increase fraction of efficiency. In addition, the customer continues to dictate that there is a time-to-market issue. As the ‘Time-to-Ship’ clock ticks away, it’s continued on page 11

Green is not always black & white continued from page 8
fascinating to see design engineers struggle and then incrementally achieve 91.1%, 91.2%, 91.3…., 92% efficiency levels. Yet, when all is said and done, engineering designs may be compromised unless there is a technological break-through. PMI engineers recently had an ‘ah ha’ moment while working on a customer’s (new) efficiency requirement. Never ignoring customer’s challenges and working with key component suppliers, PMI’s engineering department went to work using known and unique design approaches with its development of a new power supply a 10kW (3U) unit that will soon become a platform for a family of 10kW products. Knowing that higher efficiencies translate into a larger product, PMI engineering determined that choosing the right kind of diode would be critical. Schottkey diodes have some impact in improving efficiencies. Conversely, ORing diodes reduce efficiencies and create many issues when it comes to heat dissipation. However, ORing FETS may turn out to be a better solution for some products resulting in size and cost reduction. Using what is known and trying different design techniques, PMI engineering strove for that extra incremental percent. The end result was that PMI’s engineers developed another approach, which is expected to help the industry cross the efficiency threshold, resulting in a new standard. One of the integral aspects of the 10kW design was the use of a different type of power component. It’s anticipated that most of PMI’s newer product lines, which tend to be low voltage-high power and with power ranging from 1000 to 30,000 watts, will soon
go through design changes using the new efficient technology. Although 100% efficiency may never be achieved, design engineers will find ways to reduce enough switching losses to ultimately yield a real 94%. Most likely, efficiencies of 96% and 98% will be obtainable in the near future. In the meantime, the additional semiconductor cost does not justify the price especially when product size, heat dissipation and minimal power losses come into play. Solar panels savings may provide a pay back within 10 to 15 years. ECO-friendly cars are too expensive for the environmentally conscious driver who is trying to reduce costs. Homeowners expecting to get a free ride by putting power back into the grid will not see any ROI in the near future. Highly efficient power supplies that are small and inexpensive may not be readably available next month. However, being able to cross the threshold into purchasing the NextGen (eco-friendly) power supply may be nearer than we think. How soon, time will tell. Thermal Management & Enclosures
Plastic electronic enclosures Solutions for extreme customization
By David Crooks, general manager, Fibox Enclosures Inc.
Rather than create a custom package, OEMs often choose to modify or customize a standard enclosure to lower development cost, reduce final product cost and achieve a faster time to market. Seeking a customized solution, OEMs request enclosure manufacturers to do precision machining of standard units. The trend toward packaging multiple functions into a single enclosure has increased the complexity of these modifications. While this trend appears to limit using standard enclosures, in reality, advances in customization methods have increased using modified standard enclosures, and in particular, plastic enclosures. Let’s examine three designs that resulted in extreme customization. We’ll take them in order of increasing complexity.
Figure 1 shows the modified front cover of a Fibox CAB enclosure. The rectangular cutout for the readout and round holes for tactile-feedback pushbuttons require critical positioning as they mate to a printed circuit board assembly mounted using the four countersunk holes. Other groupings of precision hole patterns mount optional peristaltic pumps. The enclosure base also has extensive customization on all four sides. An overlay is applied to the cover, sealing all openings and restoring the ingress rating of the enclosure. The modifications for this OEM consisted of precision hole patterns requiring tight tolerances on multiple sides of the enclosure. The next application goes beyond.
APPLICATION #1 Customized enclosure for liquid process control This OEM develops liquid automation machinery based upon innovative chemical metering. The unit contains an operator interface, a power supply, pump and metering control modules and optional externally mounted peristaltic pumps.
APPLICATION #2 Customized enclosure for water level detection This OEM develops indirect fluid level measuring instruments, based upon innovative radar technology. A compact package for moderately hostile environments was needed for a new design. Figure 2 shows a Fibox MNX enclosure
with extensive modifications. The large rectangular cutout holds an LCD display and the round holes below mount tactilefeedback pushbuttons. Threaded metal standoffs mount the operator interface. Additional modifications for this OEM required precision holes and cutout patterns on four sides of the cover and two sides of the base. Using a secondary operation, threaded standoffs were pressfit into the cover interior for mounting electronic printed circuit boards. Our third application moves the bar even farther. APPLICATION # 3 Color customized enclosures Use of color is the ultimate extension of extreme customization. Color is often associated with application function, e.g. safety related equipment. There are specific colors associated with industry segments, e.g. the solar industry prefers light colored (often white) enclosures. An OEM’s brand identity is often defined by specific colors. Color provides uniqueness and differentiation, and OEMs are demanding more cost-effective implementation of custom color.
Figure 3 shows three applications of custom color. The blue enclosure is used for equipment monitoring water chemistry for the commercial swimming pool industry. The red enclosure is used for fire alarm pump control equipment. The white enclosure is for the solar industry. All of these enclosures also have extensive customized precision hole patterns. The entry point for custom color is dependent on unit volume. The good news is that manufacturers of non-metallic enclosures are continually reducing that entry number with new cost-effective color molding techniques.
Steps for customization success 1. Initiate early contact with the enclosure manufacturer. The engineer should look for a manufacturer with a wide selection of standard enclosures. The manufacturer’s technical staff can guide the engineer to the correct enclosure for the application. 2. Verify the manufacturer’s level of customization expertise. Most enclosure manufacturers offer customization, but achieving extreme customization in high ingress rated enclosures requires greater expertise and equipment designed for the task. This is especially true for custom color molding. 3. Understand the factors impacted by cost. Engaging the manufacturer early is crucial. Understanding what is possible, and what it costs, ensures that selecting extreme customization over a custom enclosure is the correct choice.

Accessibility has also been enhanced with the Digi-Key Mobile Application for iPhone and Android devices. This app provides easy access to Digi-Key’s expansive product offering and resources. One can create Digi-Key orders and view them in local, DigiKey supported currencies. Utilizing this app will allow customers to source the electronic components they need, wherever they are at the time. In the 2011 Distributor Customer Evaluation Study conducted by UBM Electronics in partnership with Beacon Technology, engineers and industry professionals found Digi-Key to be the top distributor in the world by ranking Digi-Key #1 in categories such as:
Photo 1
• Overall Most Preferred Distributor
DIGI-KEY CORPORATION COMPANY PROFILE
• Breadth of Product • Product Availability • On-Time Delivery • Ease of Doing Business A demonstration of customer appreciation for Digikey.com was also depicted in the UBM study as Digi-Key’s online presence enjoys the highest ratings across the following evaluation criteria:
It all began with an idea. In 1972, Electrical engineer Dr. Ron Stordahl had a vision of making quality electronic components accessible to everyone, from engineers to hobbyists. Thirty-nine years removed from the trunk of Dr. Stordahl’s car, Digi-Key has grown into a billion-dollar company, internationally known for providing the industry’s broadest selection of electronic components for off-the-shelf delivery to a global customer base from a single, 65,000 square-metre distribution facility in Thief River Falls, Minn., U.S.A. (Photo 1)
• Most Visited Site
Customer service is at the forefront of the Digi-Key business plan. Digi-Key has always been committed to providing the best service possible, and this is evidenced by their international reputation for providing top quality products and services to customers around the world. This customer-centric mentality has allowed Digi-Key to experience exponential growth over the past few years, topping $1.5 billion in sales for 2010, despite less than ideal economic conditions. Specifically, year-to-date sales in Canada have seen a significant increase, up nearly 12 percent over 2010 sales through three quarters. Digi-Key has ridden this unparalleled growth to become the world’s sixth largest global electronic component distributor, and is ranked fourth for distributors in North America.
• Ease of Ordering Product Online.
“Broad selection of electronic components” is quickly becoming an understatement as Digi-Key continues to grow. Digi-Key currently offers over 1.7 million parts from 470 world-class manufacturers by way of its award-winning website, www.digikey.ca. Digi-Key’s products are available worldwide in 81 different country-specific websites, 14 currencies, and eight languages. More than 500,000 of these components are stocked on-site and available for immediate delivery, and the vast majority of these components are shipped the same day. After being entered into the Digi-Key system by a sales representative, most orders are picked, packaged, and ready for pickup by any of the major freight carriers with which Digi-Key contracts within minutes. Worldwide carriers include UPS, FedEx, and DHL. Digi-Key’s North American customers enjoy next-day delivery, as orders are shipped directly from Digi-Key and routed to their destinations throughout Canada, Mexico, and the US. (Photo 2)
“Digi-Key’s unique business model allows us to aggregate component usage to better serve our customers in Canada, the United States and around the world,” said Tony Harris, Chief Marketing Officer, Digi-Key Corporation. “Our commitment to providing the world’s largest selection of electronic components both in-stock and online equals increased sales for Digi-Key and more opportunities for proving our worth to our customers.” In an effort to reduce environmental impact while improving product accessibility, Digi-Key recently made the decision to cease production of the print catalogue in favor of an interactive, online version. Customers now have access to every product offered by Digi-Key, as soon as it is available. Parts and stock are updated in real-time, along with associated parts, related product, datasheets and more to provide as much information for the customer as possible. The service does not stop after the sale, however. DigiKey offers a myriad of support options, from phone-in customer service and live, online technical support, to Product Training Modules and supplier datasheets. Technical experts are available 24 hours a day to answer questions and help find solutions for any technical dilemmas which may arise. Some of the latest globally accessible resources on Digi-Key’s website are the TechZoneSM technology zones which house informative articles, white papers, and application notes based on Energy Harvesting, Lighting, Microcontroller, Power, Sensor, and Wireless technologies. Digi-Key has developed these technologyspecific resources so that users of almost any profession within in the electronics industry can learn more about the latest technologies by gaining access to content penned by supplier representatives and the expertise of members of the engineering community. TechZones also include consistently updated information regarding new products available through Digi-Key’s online catalogue. Digi-Key is committed to keeping customers informed on the newest happenings within the company. Social media has become a great tool for providing this access and keeping customers involved. Digi-Key utilizes all of the most popular social media outlets, including YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. These tools allow the public to stay informed of new product offerings, company news, and any other pertinent information which may be valuable.

Newark/element14 Corporate Overview
the element14 knode Engineering design information to a web-connected world Electronic system design requires engineers to gather information for many different technologies from many different places. So where is the best place for an engineer to find all this information? That is the question that Newark/element14 set out to answer when it commissioned a study by Technology Forecasters Inc. (TFI) focused on the key challenges faced by design engineers in improving electronic system design efficiency. The results of this study, released in September 2011 show an opportunity for an independent, web-based source of technology solutions and design information to address the needs of design engineers. The scope of the TFI study covers the external information gathering needs for design engineers throughout the entire design process, from initial specification and technology research, through detailed design, prototype testing and evaluation, and finally to engineering release and production. The study surveyed engineers across the globe in big and small companies, and asked them where they spent their time searching for information, which information was the hardest to find, and about their perceptions concerning the value and quality of the information they found at those sources. The study was conducted both through written surveys and through many phone conversations with engineers around the world. Not surprisingly, the study found that most of the time spent searching for external technology information was spent during the early stages of the design process. This makes sense, as it is during the initial conceptual design, and detailed implementation stages that engineers are most likely to need external technical information. In these initial stages of the design process, the designer is often left to single-handedly gather information from a variety of sources. Ideally, the experienced engineer will have a set of “go-to” places to search for information – and indeed the survey found that seasoned engineers were somewhat less likely to encounter difficulties and delays in this information gathering phase. Yet, even the experienced designers spent unproductive weeks during this process – exposing a big opportunity for improvement to the design process. In a typical design process, the electronic design engineer begins by researching the technology; including gathering information about design protocols and standards, learning about existing architectures, and discussing possible new approaches with experts in the field. In today’s world, the starting point for this search is usually a general purpose search engine like Google. Unfortunately, while a Google search will return thousands of items on a term like ‘Zigbee,’ it will probably add days to the engineer’s workload to sift through the results to find the relevant technical data. Further, engineering research also requires digging through dozens of vendor web sites to search for the latest product information, each with different structures and data formats. The element14 knode provides an engineering-focused search tool that helps speed up and simplify electronic engineering design research by consolidating relevant technical information into a single learning center and combining it with technology forums for connecting semiconductor supplier experts and engineers with similar design interests. The next step in the design phase may include testing potential technologies for their performance and suitability to the application. For hardware analysis, an engineer can use a development platform as an “instant prototype” of a portion of the design. A single resource for all development kits, arranged by application type and by supplier, can help accelerate the design process by defining the right parts for the system. Similarly, system software can be prototyped using off-the-shelf software elements for specific applications. Engineers download trials for real-time operating systems and software stacks to evaluate different implementation options. By finding compatible application software and hardware solutions together in one location, engineers can devote more time to adding differentiating features to their systems rather than debugging interfaces between vendor products. The system development process also benefits from the consolidation of design tool information and expertise into a single location. The process through which engineers look for design tools can require lengthy evaluation cycles and designers are often forced Source: Technology Forecasters to develop benchmarks for testing different types of tools before interpreting the results. The hardware development process requires many tools; including pcb tools for schematic design and layout, FPGA synthesis tools, or analog simulation and analysis tools. On the software side there are also many different IDEs, compilers and debuggers, all with unique features and benefits depending on the choice of microprocessor in the system. The development tool decision process can be accelerated through the availability of an extensive library of pre-created benchmarks and demos. Further, access to the combined experiences of a community of engineers that have already used the tools can also inform the decision so that the acquisition process does not impede design development. The main issue facing engineers is simply not having enough time. Everyone can relate to being busy, and engineers doing electronic design are especially pressured to meet aggressive product design schedules. Pulling together information from multiple sites adds to this time
pressure, as engineers scour the web for component data, app notes, design models, development tools and standards specifications, to name just a fraction of the technical informaSource: Technology Forecasters tion required for each new design project. Furthermore, most of the design data required for design analysis is in disparate formats, making objective information comparisons difficult. As with many webbased searches, the design engineer is certain to find that some of the information is incomplete or inaccurate, potentially based on old specifications Source: Technology Forecasters or from sources that haven’t kept the information current – and in some cases from sources that no longer exist. The results of the study show that engineers could save significant time in their design process through the availability of accurate and easily comparable design data. But specifically what content should be provided on a centralized hub of technology solutions? The study found the design information that engineer’s value most highly is app notes and technical papers. Simulation models also rank highly, which underscores how difficult it can be to get accurate models for the design flow. But the most highly prized data solution is clearly the reference design. This reflects the need for a valid starting point for design that implements basic functions for a specific protocol and avoids “reinventing the wheel” – saving time and allowing design engineers to focus their time on components that are unique to their particular system. While basic component information is generally easy to find on vendor and distributor web sites, there are some data points that are harder to come by. For instance, pricing and availability might be found on a distributor site, but unbiased product reliability data, or long-term end-of-life information about a component may be more difficult to find. In fact, the bias of a vendor web site, along with the skewing of product specification data is one of the biggest concerns facing engineers making component purchasing decisions. In some cases, the component datasheet may show best-case specification numbers for every design constraint (e.g. power, voltage, current), making the component described by that datasheet a device that could never exist in the real world. Other suppliers may show only the most pessimistic numbers for the same device, making valid comparisons almost impossible without doing weeks of laboratory testing. A single, unbiased source of comparison data can help replace the ubiquitous spreadsheets that engineers produce for every new project. Finally, the study explored the many sources where engineers find their design data and compared the advantages of the addition of an independent source as a place to start design research. While most design searches begin with Google as a neutral starting point, the huge volume of information returned is problematic, as is the possibility of the right data being hidden behind thousands of irrelevant search results. Vendor sites by contrast, yield accurate component data, but TFI’s survey revealed concern regarding vendor bias in any comparison data. New social media sites such as forums, communities and blogs are another possible source of data, however engineers have concerns over unknown levels of expertise or bias in anonymous posts. The strategy for element14 is to provide a new credible alternative for engineers as an independent source of engineering design information and solutions. The results of this study highlight the opportunities to advance the design process and design engineer’s overall productivity via a web-based design knowledge-base that gives engineers consolidated design resources, increased collaboration with peers working on similar stages of the product design lifecycle, and access to reliable search sources.
