Reinventing the manufacturing dream in Canada Every region in Canada has lost electronics manufacturing jobs in some fashion to cheaper, low-cost manufacturing alternatives overseas. To curb this manufacturing job loss tendency and to attract, and retain, manufacturing functions at home, experts say it’s time to refine what could, again, support and encourage a re-birth of OEM/CEM activity. Canada has historically relied on the United States for approximately 70% of its electronics manufacturing exports, but the sector’s share of US trade is decreasing due to competition from low-cost developing countries. Canada’s cost advantage has also eroded with the rising Canadian dollar. Fortunately, there are many opportunities for increasing sales elsewhere that Canadian companies could take, according to a thorough examination of the electronics manufacturing sector by McKinsey & Company, global management consulting firm. Canada’s electronics manufacturing sector will probably continue to lag the sector’s global growth unless Canadian players, like their competitors in other higher-cost economies, are able to specialize more and refocus their product mix on higher-value goods. Looking forward, it would be critical for Canadian firms to specialize in areas that show growth potential and would leverage the country’s skilled workforce, leading engineering institutions, and capabilities in highervalue activities like R&D and design. Over the years, Canada has successfully developed regional clusters like Waterloo and Ottawa, where government organizations, corporations, and education centres collaborate to create a stimulating infrastructure to support the electronics sector’s development and growth. What would it take to create additional clusters with similar scale and scope?

If Canada aspires to become more flexible in the types of products it chooses to produce and the areas of the electronics value chain it chooses to compete in, it will need to determine how to redeploy labour to where it will be most productive. This would require putting in place joint public and private channels to effectively retrain and redeploy labour to higher-value-added activities within the sector or in other high-productivity sectors. Canada has initiatives in place to support labour training programs. However, the next step is to move beyond general support for skills applicable across labour bodies to targeted redeployment programs focused on matching employees to specific promising sectors. Venture capital is an important element in Canadian industry. For the electronics manufacturing sector, venture capital is particularly significant as it provides crucial support for the innovation and renewal required to make electronics manufacturing a competitive sector. Revitalizing Canada’s electronics manufacturing sector will require resolve and focus from multiple stakeholders in both the public and the private sectors and include public-private partnerships. They will need to determine where future opportunities are likely to lie and then find ways for Canadian firms to capture them. The rest of the sector can look to its home-grown global champions like RIM for ideas – and reasons for optimism. technology, but rather a collection of solutions from the electronics, telecom and software industries. This means there are more stakeholders affected by its success.

Steady market growth

Standardization of machine-to-machine technologies Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, which has the potential to connect billions of machines and objects, can no longer rely on the existing cellular networks designed mainly to support communication between humans. As the full potential of M2M communication is gradually being tapped into, a multitude of new electronics, telecommunication and information technologies are

being developed to improve this communication. This has lead to the development of various technology standards, which now raise the need for global compatibility and collaboration between standardization initiatives. From its modest wired applications beginnings, the surge in M2M applications has been the result of wireless communication solutions, which use wireless and satellite infrastructures to create open communication environments for machines. M2M is not one single growing

Standardization is key to future M2M solutions are slowly becoming mainstream and the continuous success of M2M technologies relies on the standardization efforts of the various protocols. Standards serve as the foundation for the development of innovative solutions that will enable M2M to evolve beyond industrial applications and be used in smart grids, security solutions, home appliance connectivity and public infrastructures. The emerging array of smart devices is completely dependent on the development of suitable standards that allow them to communicate easily. To ensure the interoperability of M2M solutions several dozen national and international committees and alliances have formed

• Telecommunications Industry Association’s (TIA) TR-50 Smart Device Communications engineering committee - effort to develop a multi-part standard for Smart Device Communications • IEEE 802.15.4-2009 standard China Communications Standards Association’s (CCSA) TC10, • ZigBee IP Stack • 3GPP SA2NIMTC (TR23.888) • European Telecommunications Standards Institute’s (ETSI) TC M2M • Current work by the CTIA CPWG ERP M2M sub group While all these standardization efforts lay the path for future innovations, there is also a risk that they will lead to conflicting or redundant standards.

Increased coordination of standardization efforts needed The development of globally compatible standards is seen as key in enabling the further growth of M2M technologies. This will require that work is done to ensure global coordination and collaboration exists between standards organizations. Several standardization groups are beginning to coordinate their activities to ensure their work pushes M2M technologies in a common direction. This effort was reinforced at the 15th meeting of the Global Standards Collaboration (GSC-15) in Beijing. Taking place in September 2010 the event saw the creation of the M2M Standardization Task Force (MTSF). This task force was created with the goal of facilitating global coordination and harmonization of M2M standardization work. Such efforts aim to ensure the future M2M ecosystem with its various interfaces will develop harmoniously. The migration path to MicroTCA MicroTCA looks to

VME, CompactPCI and AdvancedTCA for potential converts to emerging standard That MicroTCA packs a lot of punch in a small form factor is undeniable. The primary selling points for MicroTCA are impressive: an affordable next-generation computing architecture, high communications bandwidth, the latest multi-core processors, support for redundancy and high availability – all in a small system foot print that is extremely scalable. But, as with any emerging standard, adoption by its target markets is the ultimate measure of an architecture’s success. In the case of MicroTCA, several markets stand squarely in its crosshairs: the telecom market with a focus on network and wireless communications equipment; test and measurement, including communications test and high speed manufacturing inspection equipment; and the increasingly communication-centric Mil/ Aerospace market. Additional potential markets include medical imaging, industrial controls and the physics research community.

“Adoption by its target markets is the ultimate measure of an architecture’s success” Within these markets, MicroTCA is hoping to attract interest from CompactPCI and VME users looking for a next generation architecture that can deliver the increased performance, scalability and longevity these aging architectures lack, as well as AdvancedTCA adherents that are looking for a less expensive - yet still robust - feature set in a much smaller footprint. “OEMs that move to MicroTCA are going

long time, pushing it along, keeping it going and now they face a decision to go to a new architecture and MicroTCA would be a good option because of its size and increased performance,” says Lowdermilk.

Making the move to MicroTCA With communication bandwidth capabilities in the range from 40Gbits/s to over 1 Terabit/s, MicroTCA has more than enough bandwidth for most demanding applications.

to do so because it is a next generation architecture that delivers increased performance in a very small package,” says Mark Lowdermilk of Embedded Planet, a company that has produced AMC cards for AdvancedTCA, PrPMC cards for CompactPCI, PC-104, and PCI-104+, but is now concentrating on providing integrated solutions for MicroTCA. Although MicroTCA was introduced by the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG) in 2006 there are already over 50 companies worldwide offering Advanced Mezzanine Card (AMC) modules for the standard. This can be attributed to the fact that MicroTCA utilizes the same AMC cards as another PICMG effort – AdvancedTCA – which started in 2002. “MicroTCA is gaining traction quickly because it is an offshoot of AdvancedTCA,” says Lowdermilk. So there is an overlap of the ecosystems in that regard and as a result, both architectures benefit.”

The move from AdvancedTCA

Perhaps the most logical migration path to MicroTCA lies with AdvancedTCA users looking for a lower cost solution and a smaller footprint. The original intent of AdvancedTCA was to meet the requirements of the next generation of “carrier grade” wired and

To facilitate the move to MicroTCA, companies such as Embedded Planet are going one step further to offer integrated solutions to help reduce the complexity, improve time to market, reduce risk to OEM partners by delivering application specific solution that meets the customer’s exact needs. Such “application ready” solutions drastically reduce integration time and costs and eliminate the need for customers to work with multiple vendors and integrate the components into a complete system themselves. “Customers may be used to dealing with multiple vendors, particularly with VME, Compact PCI and AdvancedTCA,” says Lowdermilk. “But in this economy with few resources, less time, and the need to get to market quickly, OEMs are searching for technology experts to help them reduce costs and improve time to market.”

wireless networking and telecommunications equipment such as media gateways, video transcoders and IPTV. As a result, AdvancedTCA was created to deliver massive processing and bandwidth with high availability and built-in redundancy. However, it has also been unofficially dubbed “big iron” due to its overall size. “For many applications, AdvancedTCA may be overkill and the final solution is usually quite large,” says Lowdermilk. “For those that prefer AdvancedTCA’s features, but don’t want to invest in unnecessary functions and are looking for a smaller footprint, MicroTCA is a natural choice.” With communication bandwidth capabilities in the range from 40 Gbits/s to over 1 Terabit/s, MicroTCA has more than enough bandwidth for most demanding applications. Starting with a very small two blade chassis and scaling up to a maximum twelve MicroTCA is gaining traction quickly because it is an blade solution, 2U MicroTCA offshoot of AdvancedTCA and there is an overlap of Processors blades (PrAMCs) the ecosystems where both architectures benefit. can be networked together to deliver a tremendous amount In December, 2010, Embedded Planet of computing resources, particularly when moved from simply producing off-theeach could be designed with the latest shelf PrAMC boards for AdvancedTCA and multi-core processors to further increase MicroTCA in favor of delivering complete computing power. Connectors

Mechanical fiber optics technology interconnection

for new market applications By: Brendan Pogue, Valdor Technology International Inc., Vancouver

Conventional field installable fiber optic connectors use epoxies and gels. The downside to these older technologies include: a significant cost of time, a need for electrical power supply, a higher failure rate, chemical exposure and a reduction in efficiency. Innovative Impact Mount Technology (IMT) provides a state of the art product, with many attributes not available in conventional field installable connectors. The basic concept is to wrap metal around a bare fiber to mechanically hold the fiber in place. Based on this principle, the technology can be used for multi-fiber applications to wrap metal around a bundle of fibers aligning all seven cores within sub-micron distance of each other. The ferrule of a connector is terminated by crimping the end of the ferrule onto the fiber buffer and impacting the tip of the ferrule around the bare fiber. For all ST/SC/FC/SP connectors, the ferrule diameter measures 2.5mm. The patented Impact Mount Technology process is done in three steps with a total assembly time of roughly two minutes:

miniature SP and KSP splices. This product has numerous applications in the mining, oil and gas, aerospace and industrial sectors. For certain rugged applications the Omega Enclosure also includes a tension resistant member. The unique features of the enclosure will allow fan-out and splitting of fiber to various locations. The enclosure is waterproof and rugged and can withstand harsh environments and because the product involves no epoxies or gels the enclosed SP and KSP splices do not require a clean environment or electricity for installation. The unique design of the enclosure allows for fast mechanical installation in space restricted areas. This Omega Enclosure can accommodate from one to 48 miniature splices. The Omega Repair Kit includes the Omega Enclosure Package, the IMT SP Connector Kit and various related tools. Valdor is marketing the new Omega Repair Kit for harsh environment applications.

HeptoPort Experience with the Impact Mount led to a new concept for affixing and terminating multiple fibers, with extraordinary self-alignment features. The HeptoPort is the only circular connector on the market with multi-fiber connections and allmetal construction. The bundle connector eliminates the need to fan-out several individual connectors in the field, thus reducing space requirements and connector costs. It is an ideal multi-fiber connector for small space applications such as in aircraft, military vehicles, industrial equipment and building conduits. The HeptoPort seven-fiber connector utilizes a 2-dimensional self-aligned process of the IMT that enables a connector with a rotational alignment key to position each fiber together for a full connection. This seven by seven HeptoPort® connector miniaturizes the size of the connection and offers simplicity for in-

A cost-effective alternative to conventional fiber optics connectivity. No epoxy or index matching gel, quick and simple assembly process, highly reliable in harsh environments. line cable connection. Therefore, when two multi-fiber connectors are mated, all seven fibers will automatically align. The circular symmetry inherent to hexagonal close-packed fiber bundles lends itself naturally to the IMT method. The IMT is able to guide, in one instantaneous action, arrays of stripped optical fibers to their natural hexagonal closepacked arrangement, like marbles falling into a box. The alignment of the centers of the surrounding “planetary” fibers, relative to the center “sun” fiber, is determined entirely by the uncertainties in the fiber outside diameter, circularity, and core/cladding concentricity. In the worst case scenario these uncertainties are less than 0.6 microns for the sevenfiber HeptoPort configuration. In addition, the interconnection of a 2-D seven-fiber bundle can be used

to align microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), couplers and optical switch devices for long-haul applications.

Application The IMT field installable kits and connectors are the ideal solution for harsh environments where space limitation, extreme temperatures, shock and vibration are difficult parameters to accommodate. The IMT kit and connectors are all-mechanical and do not use any epoxy or index matching gels. They offer more stable and repeatable performance even under harsh environments. The field installable kit is designed for quick installation of connectors where no power source is available. It allows end users to repair their systems in the field and reduces expensive down-time. The IMT field installable kits, connectors and enclosures can quickly repair any damage of the fiber inside a harness that is often subject to abuse by operators handling the equipment. Enclosures allow a fan-out of the harness that can be split in different directions from the conveyer belts, mining tunnels, floor and ceiling in small space where electricity is not readily available. These service and cable enclosures with miniature SP connectors are ideal for restricted space and high density applications. Harsh environment markets including mining, oil/gas, aerospace, broadcast, military and industrial are growing rapidly. A variety of large equipment used in these markets are controlled and operated by special computers that require fiber harnesses that do not generate harmful electrical fields for their sensor applications.

Conclusion According to Electronicast Consultants (www.electronicastconsultants.com), the global market for fiber optic connectors is projected to grow to US$3.45 billion in 2011. With a quickly expanding industry, Valdor has chosen to target niche markets. IMT field installable kits and connectors are the ideal solution for harsh environments with space limitation, extreme temperatures, shocks and vibrations. ENCLOSURES Built in 2-3 days! CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE: Protocase helps Creative Connors Inc. bring Automation to Live Theatre Anyone who appreciates live theatre knows that there is a lot more to it than just acting. Good quality sets are essential to create the correct mood and atmosphere for each scene. It is common for set designers to use motion to create dynamic sets that enhance performances. This is done through the use of moving elements such as rotating platforms, linear motion, and even theatrical flight. In the past, elements were moved manually by stagehands, limiting what could be achieved. But today, automation technology is invading the theatre, and opening up a whole world of opportunities to add depth and excitement to performances. Gareth Conner, and his company, Creative Conners Inc., of Barrington, Rhode Island, are the moving force behind the introduction of automation to theatre. For over a decade, Gareth worked the theatre industry, creating sets for everything from regional theatres to large productions. Here he discovered his passion for bringing theatre sets to life through motion. But he also saw that much of the theatre world did not have access to automation, because existing systems were too expensive and complicated. This led to his vision of an entirely new automation system that was modular, open, easy to use, and affordable. The rest is a classic American entrepreneurial success story. In 2004, Gareth left his job, mortgaged his house, and set out to develop his vision into a line of products that make automation accessible to all levels of theatre. Developing and manufacturing a high quality, professional looking product line, on a tight budget, and at niche volumes was challenging, but four months later, he had sold his first product, and he achieved breakeven within a year. According to Gareth, “Protocase was instrumental to our success during the early years. At this time, I was just one guy in a basement, and I didn’t know much about sheet metal. I tried to get a combination of local shops to build and finish the metal parts that I needed. But they had little interest in my small jobs, and the cost they quoted was so high I would have blown most of my budget just on the metal parts. Then I stumbled on Protocase in 2004. They were able to work from my stack of rough designs, gave me a lot of advice, and then delivered high quality enclosures and parts, fully finished, in one stop, at a reasonable cost. Without this, I don’t know how I would have gotten off the ground.” Today, Creative Conners Inc. has become a thriving company, working with organizations that range from high school theatres to broadway. And Protocase remains an important part of their supply chain. “Protocase can supply me with the quantities that I need for my production runs, and their short lead times let me order when I need to. And I’m now making use of their blanket order program, which allows me to get pricing on my annual usage, while still ordering product only when required.” Now that the thrills and chills of startup phase are gone, Gareth says he’s still having a great time, as he continues to innovate and extend his product line. “Creativity and technology really come together in theatre. We get to work with amazing people who are working on whacky and wonderful ideas, and I get to fulfill my passion for making things move in the theatre.”

Criteria for CORRECT FUSE SELECTION Circuitry overcurrent protection rarely receives the attention it deserves. An inadequately thought out selection of fuses can lead to the breakdown of equipment and installation, resulting in high replacement costs and dissatisfied customers. This technical article focuses on the correct selection criteria for fuses and fuseholders. The function of a fuse is to interrupt an uncontrolled fault current or overcurrent before serious damage can occur, such as the overheating of equipment. Because a fuse is designed using a fusing element, it is particularly suited for reliable interruption of short-circuits. With overcurrents up to 2x or 3x the rated current, a fuse becomes less accurate and, as such, not so well suited for these conditions. Other overcurrent protection measures such as electronic protection, thermal overload elements or additional fuses are then necessary. Normal operation after switching ON is explained under Point 1. This point should always be taken into consideration.

Table 1: Pre-arcing time of a fuse according to UL 248-14

Point 2 is only necessary with capacitive loads, present when the charging of capacitors after switching ON, leads to high in-rush current peaks and the rated current of the fuse is exceeded by many multiples. Important facts with regard to fuseholders are given under point 3, where the correct selection of fuse and fuseholder combinations is explained.

Point 1: Normal Operation After Switching ON Under normal operating conditions, a fuse is subjected to a maximum operating current and a maximum operating temperature. A derating of the rated current is therefore usually necessary since a fuse is rarely operated at the set ambient temperature of 23°C according to IEC. Fuses can be in accordance with IEC 60127 or UL248-14. Because of the different definitions between the two standards, fuses are not directly interchangeable as follows: fuses in accordance with IEC 60127 may be operated continually at 100% of the rated current value, whereas fuses in accordance with UL 248-14 only at 75%. UL 248-14 specifies a minimum of 4h operating time at rated current (Table 1).

Table 2: Versions of UMT 250 with details of the melting integrals, voltage drops and power losses for every current rating

The self-heating effect of time-lag fuses is less than that of quick-acting. This can be seen from the typical values of voltage drop. For example, a 2 A 5x20 mm glass time-lag fuse has a typical voltage drop of 60 mV, whereas a typical quickacting version is 90 mV. This difference is evident by the thicker fuse element (higher melting value I2t, see point 2) that is necessary for time-lag fuses. It should also be noted that fuses are heated by the current until a certain temperature has been reached when the Fig. 1: Typical start-up in-rush curve of an SMPS when fuse element melts (opens) capacitors need to be charged and interrupts the circuit. All measures for cooling such UMT 250, the 1 A rated current fuse has as ventilation, heat sinks, large solder an I2t value of 2.8 A2s; that is, with an surfaces or heat accumulators change the overcurrent (short-circuit) or an in-rush time/current characteristic of the fuse current peak in excess of this value, the and thus should be avoided. fusing element melts and interrupts the circuit. In this example, the I2t value Point 2: of the fuse (2.8 A2s) is higher than the In-Rush Current Peaks calculated value (1.748 A2s); that is, the selection would be correct for this In-rush current peaks (Fig. 1) arise application. through capacitors that are initially In-rush pulses, particularly when they charged when switched ON. These pulses occur often, cause fuses to age premacan be many multiples of the rated curturely. In order to obtain short duration. a high I2t, time-lag fuses usually have a The area beneath tin-plated melting wire. Over time, the the curve is called the tin diffuses in the wire, which leads to a melting integral or I2t change in the time/current characteristic value. The I2t value is of the fuse. In general, quick-acting fuses defined as that amount are more resistant to pulses than timeof energy necessary to lag, but time-lag fuses need to be used heat up and melt a because of their higher I2t capability wire or fuse element. values than those for quick-acting. Generally this is an exponential curve having a peak current Point 3: value of Ip over a Combination of Fuses period of time called T, and Fuseholders at which point the current has reached 37% 5x20 mm fuses are used widely in of the peak current value. As an example, industrial applications, since they are let’s take Schurter’s time-lag SMD fuse easily available worldwide and can be UMT 250, 1 A. replaced by the end customer or a service The I2t-value can be calculated with technician. In applications such as these, the following formula using a peak cura fuseholder is usually needed. Like rent of Ip = 13 A and a t = 6 ms: fuses, the difference between IEC and I2tApplication =0.5*Ip 2*t UL standards also needs to be observed I2tApplication =0.5*(13 A)2*6 ms=0.507 when selecting fuseholders. Fuseholders A2s approved to the IEC 60127-6 standard In addition to the start-up current, need to fulfill, amongst other requirethe number of pulses over the life of the ments, the following: rated power accepequipment must be taken into account tance (e.g. 2.5W / 10A @ 23°C), rated since premature ageing of the fuse needs current (e.g. 10A) and rated voltage (e.g. to be considered. A factor of 0.29 is used 250V). For fuseholders approved to UL 512 and CSA C22.2 no. 39, only the rated for 10,000 pulses with time-lag fuses (see current (e.g. 16A) and rated voltage (e.g. Table 2). 250V) are specified. I2tmin_Fuse_T =I2tApplication /F The maximum rated current with UL is I2tmin_Fuse_T =0.507 A2s/0.29=1.748 usually higher than IEC because of the A2s following reasons: Manufacturers provide the melting IEC uses a dummy fuse, e.g., 40mOhm integral value in the catalog, for each = 4.0W / (10A)2 (Fig. 2). This dummy fuse type and rated current. For example, fuse, together with the contact resistance (Table 2) with the IEC time-lag SMD fuse between fuse and clip generate heat. The fuseholder must withstand this condition for 500h and accessible parts are not allowed to exceed a temperature of 85°C. On the other hand, UL/CSA uses a silver tube having =0Ω (Fig. 3). That means heat is only produced by the contact resistance between fuse and clip, Fig. 2: IEC test with dummy fuse

As a result of the increased temperature in the www.riaconnect.com fuseholder, derating, as described under point 1, must also be taken into consideration. In the example, the derating for RIA Connect, Inc. standard fuses is around 20%, which means a rounded up current rating of 6.3 A (5A / 0.8).
