Thailand on rebound from flood devastation Representing the epicenter for global supply of key electronics components - Asia has been the bullseye of some bad fortune over the past year. Following closely on the heels of a tragic earthquake/tsunami off the coast of Japan a year ago, Thailand suffered some its worst flooding in 70 years this past Fall. This January I was an invited participant of a media junket arranged by the Thailand Board of Investment to tour these flood devastated areas - mostly in and around Bangkok. The floods killed more than 700 people and inundated two-thirds of Thailand and put a significant dent in exports already hurt by weaker global demand. As a result, Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy contracted more than financial experts anticipated. Disrupted output by manufacturers such as solid state drive maker Western Digital Corp., has certainly put pressure on government policy makers to aid post-flood growth. Economists say that the Thai government’s reconstruction measures, along with private sector spending and private investment in machinery replacement should support a V-shaped recovery (meaning a sharp but brief period of economic decline) in domestic demand, according to the National Economic and Social Development Board. The country’s consumer confidence index dropped sharply to the lowest level in 10 years after the October floods. Consumer confidence is expected to recover rapidly in the first half of this year, when employment conditions return to normal. This will be partly driven by government measures such as compensation for flood victims, minimum-wage
hikes, and an increase in civil servant salaries. Most of the manufacturers in flood-affected industrial estates have notified the government that they will re-employ their workers. On the supply side, manufacturing production - especially of autos/ auto parts, computer parts, electronics and electrical appliances - is expected to rebound strongly in the first half this year as manufacturers catch up with pending export orders and replenish inventories destroyed by floodwaters. From a first-hand perspective, I would definitely suggest that Thailand is open for businesses and the world should be confident of the country’s future. Thailand’s advantages include its culture, people, geography and that it operates in a global economy, especially as an exporting nation. Thailand also aims to maintain strong ties with Asean members in order to play a major part in the bloc’s development. As former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair said at the CEO Summit during our visit, “The world should break down trade barriers and instil in people a sense of how their country should succeed in the future.” For more details on my trip to Thailand and how companies such as Western Digital coped and conquered the challenges of rising floodwaters, be sure to watch the video online at www.ept.ca. Semi maker Gennum sold to Semtech
Rush Electronics converts to TCH Ltd.
Gennum Corp., Burlington ON-based supplier of high speed analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for the optical communications and video broadcast markets, has entered into a definitive arrangement to be acquired by Semtech Corp., Camarillo CA, supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors. Semtech is to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Gennum for a total consideration of approximately $500-million. Semtech management believes the acquisition of Gennum will extend its leading portfolio of infrastructure products to the metro, access and enterprise computing markets and will enable California firm to provide its customers with more platforms to differentiate their own high-speed voice, video and data transmission products. The combination will enable Semtech to deliver a broader range of best-in-class solutions aimed at helping its customers create differentiated communication equipment to solve increasing bandwidth bottlenecks in the network. Gennum designs and sells products that enable video, data and multimedia content to be transmitted at high speed over long distances, while maintaining signal integrity and eliminating the potential for errors in transmission. Founded in 1973, Gennum has approximately 450 employees, including more than 240 engineers, with offices in Canada, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States.
While the address and name of former electronic component distributor Rush Electronics Ltd. officially changes to TCH Ltd., company president Jerry Arsenault says business will continue as normal to customers. Since the official acquisition by TCH last summer, the Toronto-based distributor of industrial hardware has completely transitioned all of Rush’s inventory and a dozen staff members into its 175,000-squarefoot facility. The acquisition enhances TCH’s existing line of hardware for server rack and industrial enclosure applications. Rush’s lines of captive fas- Jerry Arsenault, president TCH Ltd. teners and electromechanical hardware and exper- stands next to the highly automated tise positions TCH to grow the industrial hardware sorting area for electronic components. side of its business. Arsenault has melded Rush’s electronic inventory with TCH’s product lineup, comprised mostly of hardware, laminate panels systems, fabricated foam and speaker components. “Our electronic inventory levels will go up. This will be based on customer demand and our increased level of risk,” Arsenault explains. “We built the TCH business on speed and service and we expect that to fully translate over to the former Rush customer.” Since the acquisition, TCH moved Rush’s Ontario distribution centre into its Toronto facility. It has also merged the BC and Alberta distribution centres into one Calgary location, which it plans to expand. TCH now has locations in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Buffalo and Dallas. TCH is informing Rush customers that they can expect to be able to order and receive Rush product with no interruption. During the period of transition to TCH, Rush customers will continue working with the same sales and customer service contacts. Product price agreements, billing practices and support levels are all expected to be kept unchanged. “Once we get everyone settled in our objective is to grow the Rush side of the business by 15% in revenue growth through the rest of 2012,” says Arsenault. TCH’s address is 40 Emblem Crt., Toronto and can be reached toll free at 800-465-6281.

Collaboration with Ford helps Vancouver’s Azure Dynamics deliver green tech success Global leader in the development and production of hybrid electric systems for commercial vehicles, Azure Dynamics Corp. of Vancouver, has been working with Ford Motor Company to integrate its proprietary plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology into the carmaker’s product line. Since 2009, Azure Dynamics and Ford have produced the Transit Connect West Tech Electric to market with the E-450 Balance Hybrid Electric Step Van and Columnist, Shuttle Bus. Their technology has been deployed in notable fleets like AT&T, Sohail Kamal CINTAS, DHL, FedEx Express, and Purolator to name a few. I recently caught up with Nick Bouchon, vice-president, product development at Azure Dynamics. In his current capacity, Bouchon leads a group of 40 dedicated engineers, program managers and technicians, in developing advanced electrified vehicle powertrains that inprove fuel economy, lower cost of ownership and reduce emissions.
http://ept.hotims.com/40519-50
Niche – what sets Azure apart from other alternate fuel solutions?
Small, flexible, robust connectors maximize pcb space
“Azure focuses exclusively on light and medium duty commercial vehicles,” says Bouchon. “These vehicles are some of the worst polluters, and drive the most miles, many of them in delivery applications.” Azure focused on this niche as the volumes were too low for OEMs to become interested and customers were concentrated, comprising mostly of fleets users.
Har-flex series of space-saving, rugged and flexible pcb connectors are available in straight connector versions, as well as insulation displacement connectors and with right-angled configurations. Based on a 2-row, 1.27-mm grid, products provide all evennumbered models from 6 to 100 pins that allows for optimal utilization of pcb real-estate. For mezzanine applications, product comes in straight models in four different stack heights that allow parallel pcb distances from 8-13.8 mm to be bridged. HARTING CANADA
So what benefit do you offer commercial clients? “Azure’s hybrid and electric powertrain line-up produces a positive return on investment to our customers, ranging anywhere from 2 to 7 years depending on drive-cycle, type of powertrain (electric or hybrid), and yearly mileage,” explains Bouchon. “And, to top it off, customers are guaranteed to help save the environment.” These results are backed by independent rankings. Azure’s hybridized E-450 offering has cleaner tailpipe emissions than its non-hybrid counterpart, and the all-electric Azure Ford Transit Connect, developed by Azure in partnership with Ford, has been ranked the third most efficient vehicle in North America, ahead of the Chevrolet Volt, by the US EPA.
http://ept.hotims.com/40519-51
Anything new coming up? Azure is currently developing a patent pending plug-in hybrid powertrain on Ford’s F-Series Super Duty trucks, including the full line-up of F-350, F-450 and F-550 trucks. “These trucks are typically used by fleet users, covering a wide variety of vocations such as utilities, telecom, construction, landscaping, shuttle buses, government and general delivery,” says Bouchon. As fuel costs represent one of the largest operating expenses for many fleets, efficiency is garnering increasing interest from fleets from government and commercial applications.
Highly accurate pressure gauges view with bright backlit display Fluke 700G Series Precision Pressure Test Gauges include nine easy to use, rugged and reliable models that deliver highly accurate pressure measurements in the harshest industrial environments. Units can measure 14 to 15 pounds-per-square-inch (psi) with a resolution of 0.001 psi (model 700G04) to -14 to 10,000 psi with a 1 psi resolution (model 700G31) with a 0.05% total measurement uncertainty for one year, providing pressure testing for virtually any application. Products log up to 8,493 pressure measurements to memory when used in conjunction with 700G/TRACK software (see below). All models provide a bright backlit display for easy viewing of data in any environment, 1/4” NPT to 1/4” ISO adapter for fast connections, and a rubber holster that protects the gauge and makes them easier to hold. FLUKE CANADA
Any words of advice for a budding tech entrepreneur? “Stick with it,” says Bouchon. “In retrospect, endeavouring to develop and sell hybrid powertrains for commercial vehicles back in the year 2000 when few people had even heard the term hybrid vehicle was a grandiose idea. Not only did we need to develop the technology, but we had to help develop the market. Azure has had many setbacks over the past decade, but our ability to stick with it, and our ultimate belief in the technology and the market opportunity kept us going, and led us to our current success.” Azure’s pre-production truck segment vehicles are expected to become available in 2013, with full production in the first half of 2014.

Power Supplies/Medical Applications
Preventing system failures with redundant power systems In cases where an end-product or system cannot tolerate any downtime, a redundant power supply or system configuration should be considered. In addition, when designing a system or end-product that must have a minimum downtime, the power source should be carefully selected. In general, the longer the power supplies warranty, the longer the power supply and the end-product will operate without a failure. Power supplies contain large electrolytic capacitors, which over time will dry out and eventually fail. High quality industrial grade power supplies use higher grade and more expensive electrolytic capacitors that resist drying out and therefore ensure the longest power supply life possible. In addition, most medium to high power supplies use fans to keep them at the correct operating temperature. Since fans are electro-mechanical devices they have the shortest lifespan of any component in a power supply or system and will over time, fail.
Figure 1 is a schematic of a redundant power system. You’ll notice there are three power supplies connected in parallel by means of internal Isolation (ORing) Diodes connected in series to the system load. The isolation diodes’ function is to become back-biased (as an open-switch) in the event one of the power supplies fails. In this situation, the failed supply is automatically disconnected from the system load, its fault indicator turns from green to red, and the System Load continues to receive full power from the remaining two redundant power supplies. The failed supply is designed to be replaced while the system input and output power remains ON (hot-swapped); therefore it can replaced at the user’s convenience without impeding the operation of the system. One of the main reasons for using ‘Redundant Power Supplies’ is to construct a ‘fault-tolerant’ power system. This means that even if one of the paralleled supplies should fail the system will continue to provide full power to its

power bus. This is sometimes referred to as 100% power availability. In redundant power systems, each supply must include a circuit that automatically disconnects its output from the others, should it malfunction. Typically this automatic disconnect is accomplished by having isolation diodes or MOSFETs placed in series with the output of each paralleled supply. In the event one of the supplies develops a short circuit on its output (a worst case scenario) or shuts down for any reason, the isolation diodes would become backbiased or the isolation-MOSFET switch would be turned off (high impedance state), thus preventing the output current from the other supplies from flowing into the shorted or defective output of the failed supply.

The HFE1600 Series 19” rack mount redundant power system comes with five 1.6kW hot-swap power supplies installed. If fewer supplies are needed, blanking plates can be installed in the unused slots.
In addition to having this automatic output ‘disconnect’ feature, each supply must include a signal and visual indicator which can be used to alert the user or a remote monitoring station that a specific redundant power supply has failed, so it can replaced and repaired in the future.
Typical redundant configurations
There are a number of ways to construct redundant or fault-tolerant power system. The most common method is to have at least one supply with sufficient output power to fully satisfy the system’s power requirements. Then, a second power supply of the exact same ratings is provided as a back-up in the event one of the two supplies fails. This forms a basic N+1 redundant and faulttolerant power system (1+1 system). ‘N’
equals the number of supplies required to fully power the system and ‘+1’ equals one back-up or redundant supply that will take over for a failed supply. ‘N’ could consist of two power supplies, each providing 50% of the total load power with ‘+1’ supply having the same power rating as the others. One advantage of this type of power system (2+1) is that under normal operating conditions each of the three-paralleled supplies are only providing 33.3% of the total system power, thus reducing the thermal stress on each supply and improving its Mean-Time-ToRepair (MTTR). In some mission-critical applications there may be a need for an N+2 redundant power system. As previously mentioned, the ‘N’ is the number of supplies needed to support the system’s load. However, in mission-critical applications like air traffic control, data back-up, or life support systems, having two back-up supplies provides much better fault tolerance than if one is provided. Nonetheless, there is an added expense to achieve this improved degree of power availability and fault-tolerance. It is best if all the redundant and fault-tolerant supplies have the type of interface circuits and input/output connectors that allow the supplies to be replaced while the system’s ac input and dc output power is still in the ‘ON’ state. The ability to do this is called ‘hot-swap’ and is an important feature to have. In this way, a maintenance person can replace the faulty power supply without interrupting the system’s operation.
Active current share is important
In order to properly parallel two or more power supplies, the supplies should include an ‘active current share’ or ‘master/slave’ feature. This function forces each of the paralleled supplies to contribute its share of current to the load. For example, two paralleled supplies would each provide 50% of the total load current and three supplies would each provide 33.3% of the total current, etc. These current share connections must be continued on page 14

Preventing system failures continued from page 10
made between all the paralleled supplies. If active current share was not employed, one of the paralleled supply’s outputs could drift higher than the others and can ‘hog’ most of the load current, which can be dangerous and can lead to the premature failure of the power supply, especially in high power applications.
Economies of scale
Economic savings can be achieved where a system requires a specific power level when it is originally built and shipped to the end-user, but can be upgraded in the field to add more power as the system grows. For example, for data center servers the original power requirements for the system may require two or more power supplies in parallel. However, as more data handling capacity is added, more power will be required. The ability to add or reduce the total power provided to a system is referred to as ‘scalable power’. The advantage of a rack-mounted redundant power system is that the original configuration can consist of some number of power supplies with blanking plates covering the unused slots. Then, as more power is needed by the system, one or more blanking plates can be removed and additional hot-swap power supplies can be added to system to supply the additional power requirements.
Optional rack-mounting
A rack mount enclosure provides a convenient means for paralleling supplies for expansion (scalability) and/or to form a redundant, hot-swap configuration. However, many power supplies have the necessary features for being connected in parallel with active current sharing and failure alarm signals. And, by adding external isolation diodes these supplies can be configured to form a Redundant Power System. Always check your power supply’s instruction manual to be sure that your supplies can be connected in parallel, etc.
The only feature that paralleling individual supplies will lack compared to the rackmounted systems, previously described, is the special mechanical aspects that allow the power supplies to be hot-swapped while the input and output power is active. So, in non hot-swap applications, a scheduled maintenance shut-down period is required to allow time for replacing the faulty power supply.
The SWS1000L series power supply can provide 1000 watts of output power and features alarm signals and active current sharing. Two or more of these supplies can be connected in parallel with external isolation diodes to form a redundant and fault tolerant power system.
Summary
In summary, we have reviewed when and how to consider using a hot-swap, redundant and fault tolerant power system, plus the economics of scalable power and the features required of the power supplies in order to construct a redundant power system with the greatest amount of reliability and ease of system maintenance. Power Management IC market to 2020 ALTERNATIVE ENERGY markets and energy efficient portable gadgets to DRIVE GROWTH GBI Research’s new report, “Power Management Integrated Circuits (IC) Market to 2020 - Alternative Energy Markets and Energy Efficient Portable Gadgets to Drive Sales Growth” provides key information and analysis on the market opportunities in the PMIC industry. The report covers the trends, industry dynamics, information on the revenue and volume of the PMIC market and the market share of the suppliers. The report also provides product-based, region-based and end-use based forecasts up to 2020. The product-based forecasts up to 2020 are given for voltage regulators, controllers and converters. The key market trends for wide range of Power Management IC applications in IT/computer, communication, consumer electronics, industrial/ medical, automotive and defense sectors are discussed.
PMIC usage in the alternative energy market is increasing, as it helps in the efficient distribution of electricity. Rapid adoption of portable gadgets is expected to boost the demand of PMICs. This report is built using data and information sourced from proprietary databases, primary and secondary research and in-house analysis by GBI Research’s team of industry experts. In 2010, the world semiconductor market was $298.3 billion and Power Management ICs (PMICs) contributed around 4.7% to the overall semiconductor market. The demand for PMICs is increasing with the increasing demand for sophisticated technology, superior designs, and energy efficient low-voltage power management devices. The industry dynamics of PMICs are given in the sections below.
Strong sales of portable devices increase the PMIC market volume The number of PMICs consumed grows in proportion to the increase in sales of portable devices. This is because PMICs are used in portable devices. Some examples of the products for which demand is increasing are smartphones, hybrid vehicles, notebooks, LEDs and so on. With the increase in the sale of these products, the consumption of PMICs increases. The rise in the demand for smartphones and tablet PCs from 2009 to 2010 is shown in the figure adjacent.
Demand for power management ICs grow as demand for energy efficiency grows A key driver to the growth of the PMICs in the current scenario is demand for energy efficient products. There are various motivations to improve energy efficiency. They can be government policies, the need to save energy, reduce energy consumption or energy costs or energy emissions. For this, efficient batterypowered devices are needed. Efficient battery-powered devices require more PMICs. Even portable products are efficient only with a good backed up power device installed in it. So, as the need for energy efficiency is growing, the demand for PMICs is increasing.
Alternative energy markets create demand for power semiconductors Power semiconductors are needed in alternative energy markets. In the alternative energy industry, smart systems are being used on the grid for more efficient distribution of electricity. For efficient
distribution of electricity, new highend power management semiconductor technology is needed. So, alternative energies like solar and wind are creating a demand for PMICs to avoid wastage in power while distributing the electricity. By 2025, efficient power electronics have the potential to reduce the world’s electricity consumption by about 20-30%.
Technology improves efficiency, size and cost of power management devices Power device manufacturers must aim at improving the substrate technology to improve efficiency and lower the size and cost. From usage of silicon, to SiC (silicon carbide), and GaN (gallium nitride), there is a shift in the substrate that is being used. In power management semiconductors or PMICs, with the usage of GaN devices, one can attain improvement in resistance, switching frequency, breakdown voltage, system efficiency and power density. Using GaN-based power conversion products gives three times better performance than the existing silicon products. To get a better performance at lower cost, such improvements in the substrate technology for PMICs is needed.
New packaging solutions improve thermal management New packing solutions bring improvement in thermal management. Thermal management is a path to reducing cost and maintaining robust operations in power management semiconductors. To improve thermal management, packaging can be done by soldering heat sinks to the metal, closer coupling of wires with double-cooling on both ends. This would improve the whole packaging system which improves power management and current fluctuations in PMICs. Pushing forward with innovation in energy harvesting
2011 turned out to be a very interesting year for energy harvesting, full of scientific advances, technology breakthroughs and new product developments. IDTechEx predicts that the trend is set to continue, with further developments expected in 2012, along with expansion of commercialization efforts which will push energy harvesting adoption forward.
Lowering power consumption requirements It’s not just energy harvesters that are getting better though. It’s also power consumption requirements that are coming down and what better example than Intel’s Claremont, showcased in September 2011, a concept processor that was demonstrated to run light workloads on solar power by dropping power consumption to under 10 milliwatts. “It may not become a commercial product, but the research could be integrated into future processors and other circuitry” Justin Rattner, CTO of Intel said at the time.
technology, in which Micropelt’s thermal energy harvesting technology allows for a fully embedded and sealed cooking sensor for the life time of the gear (A single 6mm2 Micropelt thermogenerator powers a fully self-sustaining MSX cooking sensor just from the normal process heat). Micropelt also developed qNODE working together with Schneider Electric, a wireless condition monitoring sensor and Micropelt’s solution to increasing both operating safety and power availability in 24/7 production environments. The qNODE wireless temperature sensor generates its power from the resistive heat of the device it is monitoring.

Optimizing harvester power generation At the other end of the spectrum, energy harvesters are drastically improving also. In only a few years, piezoelectric harvesters moved on from harvesting power of the order of µW to devices demonstrated in 2008 harvesting miliwatts. An even more recent example was showcased at Energy Harvesting 2011 in Boston last November when research work from the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) in the USA was presented on the development of high energy efficiency piezoelectric energy harvesters. Focusing on basic scientific principles that demonstrated how the '33' (longitudinal) excitation mode on piezoelectric harvesters is characterized by 3 times higher energy conversion efficiency than the '31' (transverse) excitation mode, the NIA researchers described the design and construction of a hybrid piezoelectric energy harvesting transducer that can harvest 4 times more energy than a tradition '31' harvester. Further work at the NIA is focusing on optimizing these devices with numerical piezoelectric harvesters being developed that can harvest up to 1W of power with work on these devices expectd to be published in 2012.
Innovate and commercialize What makes the energy harvesting space feel more vibrant is the fact that it’s not just the research and development part of the chain that’s alive with innovation. Concepts and laboratory prototypes are not the only devices coming out of research teams. End user pull is increasing, leading to increased interest in the capabilities of energy harvesters and the bespoke performance they can provide in very specific operating environments. Taking advantage of that specific selling point of their technology, thermoelectrics company Micropelt demonstrated not just one, but two new products in the past year: • A cooking sensor co-developed with MSX http://ept.hotims.com/40519-19

but the qNODE shows exactly what’s available,” says Burkhard Habbe, VP of business development with Micropelt. “The bottom line is, stand by for further innovations in 2012, there’s more to come and it’s sure to inspire” Says Dr Peter Harrop, chairman of IDTechEx. Coordinated circuit solar power power protection for small solar systems
By Neal Schultz, senior applications engineer, TE Circuit Protection Ltd.
Rising energy costs and increasing support for clean, renewable energy sources has made solar power a growth industry. Solar panels directly generate power by converting sunlight to electricity with no moving parts, zero emissions, and little to no maintenance. Solar power systems can be either independent (off-grid) or connected to the utility power grid. In the off-grid model, battery packs are used to store electrical power for night usage or peak consumption periods. Independent systems may also be used by telecommunications providers or satellite TV broadcasters, and can be combined with wind power or micro-hydropower resources in a mixed power generation station.
protection devices is particularly important in these applications. An effective, coordinated protection solution helps minimize downtime, an important consideration since solar power systems usually consist of unattended operations with long maintenance and service life requirements. The cable of each solar panel in the solar power system is first connected to the header box of the solar system controller. Figure 2 illustrates an overvoltage protection design with MOV (metal oxide varistor) overvoltage protection devices applied to the input terminals of the header box and controller. For solar applications with higher voltage and reliability requirements, gas discharge tubes (GDTs) connected in series with MOVs help provide a greater level of protection – especially for cabling running outside of premises. For lower power systems with voltages less than 48Vdc, GDTs can be used alone for overvoltage protection. Figure 1. Typical solar power system diagram. Consideration must also be made for failure modes of overvoltage devices from follow-on current. A coordinated overcurrent/overvoltage protection scheme can help improve system reliability in the case of overvoltFigure 2: Coordinated solution for solar controller input protection. age device failure. Lightning protection To maximize light exposure over the solar panels they are usually installed in open fields or in elevated locations (e.g., rooftops of buildings). These installations can make solar power generation systems vulnerable to transients, such as ring-wave and lightning, as well as coupled transients from adjacent cables like power/ control lines in the same conduit. In compliance with the electrical environment category of IEC61000-4-5, the power connect cabling out of the solar panel is a Class 4 subset of the IEC61000-4-5. Protection levels of Class 4 electrical systems are 2kV line-to-line and 4kV line-to-ground, although adopting 6kV protection levels is recommended. The surge-handling capacity of overvoltage
Controller and inverter protection
The power output generated by the solar panels can vary depending on light levels received due to clouds or other types of shading effects. One example is when the sun traverses the horizon and shade from trees or structures prevents light from striking the entire array, causing droops in power levels received by the controllers and inverters. Controllers and inverters are susceptible to many types of transients. Electrostatic discharge (ESD) sources include human, open air or a phenomenon of transients that are generated from the glass of the solar panels and discharged into the controller and inverters. Coupled transients like EFT (electrical fast transient) and ringwave, and lightning, whether by direct or indirect (close proximity) hits, can
also generate transients. Communications ports on controllers and inverters are susceptible to these transients. Protecting the controller and inverter and their communications ports from overvoltage transients can be accomplished with the 2Pro device, which combines a PPTC overcurrent component with an MOV into one thermally protected device. This device helps to provide resettable current limiting for overcurrent conditions and voltage clamping during overvoltage events. Under normal operating conditions the ac line voltage applied to an MOV is not expected to exceed the device’s maximum ac root mean voltage (VacRMS) rating and, provided that the transient energy does not exceed the MOV’s maximum rating, short-duration transient events are clamped to a suitable voltage level. However, a sustained abnormal overvoltage/limited current condition may cause the MOV to go into thermal runaway. Standard unprotected MOVs are typically rated to 275VacRMS for a universal input voltage range. In a loss of neutral condition they may overheat with negative consequences, even if a fuse or power resistor is used upstream. In a worst case scenario, as shown in Figure 1, a voltage of 400Vac instead of 230VAac, derived from a loss of neutral, is applied. In such an unlimited current condition, the unprotected MOV will first fall to low impedance of a few ohms, but due to the high amount of energy present it may rupture. If there are devices placed on the ac line return path to limit current flow these may also overheat due to the failure of the MOV. Figure 3 illustrates the effects of these abnormal overvoltage conditions on three devices or a combination of devices: 1) 2) 3)
2Pro device (TE’s LVM2P-015R10431 device) Single MOV (10mm, 275 VRMS – TE’s ROV10-431K device) MOV/4W with power resistor (10 ohms)
As shown in Figure 3, the 2Pro device’s PPTC element helps prevent thermal run-
away, maintaining varistor surface temperature at less than 150C, and prevents the device from reaching unsafe temperatures caused by overvoltage transients. This approach helps manufacturers comply with IEC 60950 and IEC 60335 and helps equipment remain operational after specified lightning tests according to IEC 61000-4-5.
Battery Pack Protection In solar power systems the safety of the battery pack is a very important design consideration. Both lead acid and lithium batteries that are integrated into the system or installed with an external wire connection can be affected by potential failures such as cable short circuit, misconnection of the battery’s positive and negative poles, or overtemperature issues. Such failures can cause minor damage to the equipment’s circuit or result in serious property damage or safety issues. Battery packs are also subject to external short circuit events during transportation and installation, and overcurrent protection is required to improve safety and system performance. The Metal Hybrid PPTC (MHP) device was developed for these types of battery pack applications and provides over 30A of working current when the specified voltage is over 30Vdc.
Summary Protecting the photovoltaic system against damage resulting from overvoltage and overcurrent transients is critical to improving reliability, safety and longevity. Proper system grounding and a robust circuit protection strategy can minimize the effects of such damage. New Generation Surge
Protectors Bring Benefits for I/O Systems
By Alan Balcombe, portfolio marketing manager, Weidmuller North America
Summary: A lot has changed between the early generations of surge protectors for signaling, and the versions available today. New innovations have improved the quality of protection, broadened device functionality, and made it easier for users to manage the crucially important ongoing protection. Vulnerability from lightning damage for measurement and control instrumentation in industries such as water, wastewater, chemicals and petro-chemicals, is a major concern to plant managers. Direct strikes, which cause damage to control systems, are relatively rare through the use of mechanical protection, such as ground rods, which act as an effective first line of defense. However, product damage and signal disturbances are much more frequently caused by transient surges as the result of remote strikes and cloud-to-cloud strikes. This problem is aggravated with the increased number of sensitive microprocessor-based electronics in field instrumentation and the growing use of fieldbus signaling. When the damage reaches through to the DCS I/O system, it can result in partial or complete plant shutdown. This makes the value of I/O surge protection of the upmost importance.
V-Test unit offers simple and easy testing of VSPC pluggable surge protectors.
There are two primary surge formats – one with pluggable arrestors, the second in compact terminal format. The compact terminal format is ideal for process instrumentation installations. They include options and features, which improve the choice and breadth of applications and ensure high quality, ongoing protection through monitoring options and easy replacement. Following the direction of the latest IEC installation standard, both types automatically provide status indication or alarming to alert for arrestor replacement.
Two in combination is more effective than the previous combination of three. Also, the maximum surge discharge capability (Imax) is 20kA (8/20µs), even for the compact, terminal-sized SPD, compared with 5-10kA in the past. This doesn’t mean we expect it to discharge higher surges, although it can. It does mean the SPD will last longer i.e., will withstand many more 1kA or 2kA transients. In addition to this, protection for floating or grounded signal lines is offered, recognizing that many DCS I/O signals, especially analog, are floating (not ground referenced).
Continued protection Once fitted, maintaining good ongoing surge protection has been a labor-intensive activity and for this reason, a less reliable one. The issue is that the arrestors, or voltage limiting components, gradually wear out. The more transients they suppress, or current surges they discharge, the less efficient they become until they degenerate into an interfering additional load in the loop to which they are fitted. If failed SPDs in I/O systems are not recognized and replaced, users at best should expect measurement errors and poor control. It is therefore critical for the user to regularly monitor the SPD status, so the worn-out arrestors can be replaced in a timely fashion. The manual testing procedure has been a hassle however, and until recently, the SPD had to be disconnected from the measurement or control circuit while electrical checks were made to assess its condition. Large process plants can have thousands of analog and digital I/O loops to be checked. The involvement of the shift manager, coordination with the control room, generation of work permits, and switching to manual control for critical loops, all means that SPD monitoring is a complex maintenance function. Recent innovations have simplified the maintenance of surge protectors in a variety of ways, based on the ability to automatically detect the degrading condition of a MOV, GDT or TAZ. The thermal
disconnect (or trip), using a technology already well proven in power surge protection, is the key component that takes the arrestor out of the circuit when it degrades. The arrestor’s increased leakage current, as it becomes a less efficient insulator, increases the heat generated until the thermal trip operates. Whereas in power applications the trip would disconnect, opening the arrestor circuit to prevent high current flowing from the live conductor to the ground. In signaling applications the trip shorts the protected circuit to ground, and/or between conductors. This action is the subject of a recent mandate in IEC 62305, the international standard for the installation of signaling surge protectors. The goal of making the short circuit is to create a condition which will be noticed by the DCS as a “signal out of range”, generating a system alarm and thereby initiating a job request for a circuit check by a technician, who would then replace High density VSSC4 the arrestor. The surge protector. additional benefit of the short circuit is to protect downstream equipment from further transient surges by providing a ready path of low resistance to ground.
Finding and fixing When the technician arrives at the control panel, knowing which loop needs to be checked because the DCS has identified it, the arrestor-replacement job is simple. Colored markers on the SPD will verify the nominal circuit voltage of the device. Worst-case scenario, the technician will need to disconnect a few cables,
Progress in performance In this latest generation of signaling surge protection devices (SPDs) some of the trusted basics are still in place. Common mode (conductor protected to ground), remains the primary protection, and series mode (conductor to conductor), is widely featured as well. The familiar voltage limiting components, Gas Discharge Tubes (GDTs), Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) and Avalanche Diodes (TAZs), usually in combination, are still the heart of the SPD. Now, these arrestors are faster in operation (switching on), better insulators, and discharge higher transient currents.
Typical status loop surge protection with input from a Conductivity probe (switch). Transient surges may be discharged to ground via the DIN mounting rail or via the SPD’s terminals 3/6.
test the SPD and re-connect. The SPDs fitted may have pluggable arrestors that confirm which item is to be replaced via their local LED display. Otherwise, with high-density, nonpluggable types the technician may look at the array of surge protectors and see their integral LEDs lit to show positive loop status. If any SPDs are found with LEDs fitted, but not lit, the technician may wish to test the loops. Lever disconnects on the SPD will make testing easy (again, without removing cables) by enabling a test voltage to be applied, which will turn on the LED if the arrestor is in good condition. A valuable option with pluggablearrestors is remote status signaling, where the SPD itself generates the call for the technician. This has been long used in power protection and only recently introduced to signaling protection. When the thermal trip is activated it operates the integral indicator and a switch to send a remote signal either into the DCS, the technician’s workshop, or both. To minimize the alarm cabling involved, the pluggable SPDs can be grouped up to ten in series, and connect to a single relay to initiate the remote alert. Another new timesaving tool and an essential accessory for pluggable SPDs is the dedicated portable test unit. This device, developed to help fulfill the requirements of IEC 62305-3, which calls for periodic inspections for surge protectors, can be used for pluggable signal or power arrestors. The ultimate simplicity of unplugging the installed arrestor from its base, inserting it into the test unit, and reading the “OK/NOT OK” display makes the job a potential favorite for the technician – meaning, of course, that the job stands a good chance of being done. Despite the additional protection these new SPDs offer, their lifetime is finite and hence protection is never complete. The number of transients occurring over a period of time, and their severity, are usually unknown, and therefore the condition of the arrestors are also unknown. Thus the best method, to effectively protect equipment in applications where lightning is a regular occurrence, is for plant managers to 1) fit suitable SPDs designed for easy testing and 2) test them regularly. Programming controllers:
C vs relay ladder logic By G. Young, customer support manager, Z-World
In today’s more sophisticated realm of programmable controllers, it is well worth the time invested to become a proficient C programmer. C can solve most programming problems and is supported on all major programming platforms. Ultimately, a good C programmer can write programs that out perform those of an equally competent programmer using RLL.
This paper examines two methods of programming embedded controllers and describes the benefits of using C-Language in industrial control applications.
The World of programmable controllers has become more sophisticated if not more complicated. No longer is it sufficient for a machine to endlessly perform the same series of actions. Systems now, in addition to performing repetitive tasks, must optimize procedures in order to maximize production while keeping basic statistics (a requirement of quality assurance). Moreover, many systems must interact with one or more third-party devices with interfaces that are alien to the controlling Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). Some systems must also interface with at least one enterprise-wide network that provides management with up-tothe-minute information. Relay Ladder Logic (RLL) was designed to provide more flexible software simulation that would replace the relays, timers, and counters common to control systems of the 1960s and 1970s. RLL has been successful in not only achieving, but in surpassing its modest goals. RLL is a powerful tool when applied to an application that performs specific tasks. However, RLL cannot meet the multiple challenges of today’s PLCs even though some RLLs have been retrofitted with features to handle more complicated application demands. At best, these enhancements are awkward and slow and are either difficult or nearly impossible to use. RLL is simply not suited for today’s more complicated industrial problems.
When programming in C, allocating memory is not a problem because the programmer is in control of how resources are allocated C, on the other hand, was designed to be a general purpose programming language. Not only does C dominate the development of applications for personal and corporate computing, it dominates the development of embedded systems. Therefore, C is used to program everything from word processors and databases to microwaves and TVs. In essence, C is everywhere. The reason for C’s popularity is its general-purpose nature. Because C makes no assumptions about its environment or what types of tasks it will perform, programs written in C use resources much more efficiently than equivalent RLL systems. Most PLCs
provide the user with a fixed number of devices such as auxiliary relays, registers, and timers. Eventually, every RLL programmer encounters a situation where a fixed allocation of assets is not acceptable for an application. For example, a particular application may only require a few auxiliary relays and timers, but requires more registers than an RLL application can make available. The most aggravating aspect of this scenario is that the PLC often has the needed memory, but has allocated that memory to unneeded auxiliary relays and timers. When programming in C, allocating memory is not a problem because the programmer is in control of how resources are allocated. As long as a programmer does not attempt to allocate more resources than available, C allows the programmer to decide how to use resources.
C can solve most programming problems and is supported on all major programming platforms
C and RLL Characteristics: C Programming Language • Programming flexibility provides many means to solve a problem. So many, in fact, that a novice often gets overwhelmed by the possibilities. • Ability to focus execution on a small section of code. Important for applications where certain functions are not done often enough or are skipped entirely. • Less intuitive for beginners and a little harder to learn than RLL. • A useful set of basics can be learned quickly, but the more complicated aspects of the language can be quite confusing even to programmers with moderate experience.
Relay Ladder Logic • So restrictive that the simplest problems often seem to solve themselves.
Another important advantage of C is its execution focus. RLL was written to simulate hardware’s inherently parallel operation. Parallel operation is accomplished by executing every 'rung' of the RLL program on each scan. While this achieves the desired results, it has one major drawback: scan times increase as the size and complexity of the program increases. When attempting to use RLL to perform complex tasks, scan times, which can increase to more than 10 milliseconds, are generally too slow for most applications. C, however, has a program counter that starts at the function main (the first function executed in any C program). The programmer counter works its way through the code, directed by flow control statements written by the programmer. A processor running a C program is executing only one sequence of instructions at a time. While one sequence of instructions is executed, the rest of the program is idle, waiting to execute the next set of instructions. This single execution focus gives the programmer incredible power to decide which aspects of the application need the most intense attention and which only need to be checked periodically. Without this control, handling high-speed events (such as deployment of an airbag) would be impossible.
• Executes every section with every scan. There is no chance of code not executing. • Can be learned relatively quickly. • Designed to perform a single task and performs that task well.
