SEMICON West lights up with MEMs, LEDs, PE & photonics Recent advances in microelectronics technology and production processes have led to rapid acceleration in MEMs and LED manufacturing, not to mention breakthroughs in silicon photonics and printed/flexible electronics. But what comes next? The latest manufacturing, materials and production developments in all these technologies were put on display at SEMICON West 2013 in San Francisco last month. The co-location of these component sectors was aimed at maximizing the synergies between semiconductors and related adjacent markets, as each shares many of the same manufacturing materials, equipment and processes. More than 200 exhibitors and nearly 20 hours of technical presentations were focused on these adjacent markets, with leading manufacturers, experts and scientists in their respective fields. Talks addressed the critical challenges and barriers for MEMS as the market evolves from ‘one product — one process’ craftsmanship to high volume, more flexible manufacturing. Meanwhile, the use of MEMs devices is exploding in volume and diversity. To meet this challenge, MEMs packaging and integration technologies will evolve to include controlled stress packaging, selective hermeticity, solutions for multiple sensors, and integrating intelligence and even energy supply and wireless transmission solutions. Looking ahead to the next generation of HB-LED manufacturing
technology, industry leaders looked at the current state of progress of some of the key developments that could potentially be disruptive, from alternative substrates and critical defect analysis to light extraction strategies and innovative packaging. A selection of leaders across the value chain, including leading research labs to the key chip and systems makers, talked about the current state of the technology, the likely solutions for integrating photonics with CMOS, and the industry ecosystem that will be needed to manufacture it. Various techniques were explored for creating very thin silicon chips that can be incorporated in flexible systems and finding ways to cost effectively and reliably integrate more conventional processors or MEMS sensors or high-speed RF communications with printed/flexible electronics systems. Addressing these needs and challenges requires organized and collective action on a global scale, and that is what such important gatherings as SEMICON deliver as an annual tradeshow for the micro- and nano-electronics manufacturing industries.

Ericsson to build ICT Centre in Canada
PEO condemns government reversal
Ericsson has unveiled its plans to build a global ICT Centre in Vaudreuil-Dorion, QC. The approximately 40,000 Square-metres facility will house the company’s complete portfolio enabling the R&D organization to develop and verify solutions, creating the foundation for the next generation technology and cloud-based services. Canada’s new state-of-the-art centre will be located close to two of Ericsson’s main R&D hubs in Montreal and Ottawa and will be a new platform for its R&D engineers, supporting its lean and agile ways of working. Ericsson’s customers will also be able to connect remotely for interoperability testing, trials, and will have early access to innovation on new business services in real-time from their own locations. The North American ICT Centre will begin operations in early 2015.
Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), the licensing and regulating body for professional engineering in Ontario, has grave concerns over a decision by the Ontario government to reverse a three-year legislative commitment that would have helped to ensure a healthier and safer workplace. Within the Open for Business Act, passed in October 2010 by the same provincial government, was a provision to repeal section 12(3)(a) of the Professional Engineers Act, which enabled certain acts of engineering to be carried out by non-engineers in a manufacturing workplace. On Wednesday, the government abandoned a previously announced proclamation date of September 1, 2013 for the repeal of this “industrial exception” to take effect. “We are shocked the Ontario government has taken this course of action,” said PEO President Annette Bergeron, MBA, P.Eng. “This is an important workplace health and safety measure that would close a serious regulatory gap, and allow workers, under protection of law, to refuse to do work that they may not be qualified to do.” “The provincial government’s troubling decision not to proclaim the provision to repeal the exception allows engineering work by unlicensed and unaccountable individuals to continue,” she said. “It also leaves a gap in PEO’s ability to regulate acts of engineering and puts some workers in a position where they are required by their employers to perform work they may not be qualified to do.” Ontario is the only province in Canada with such an “industrial exception” and its elimination would have brought Ontario in line with national standards.

How does altitude affect
ac-dc power supplies? By David Norton, marketing, TDK-Lambda Americas
Most ac-dc power supplies that meet the safety standards per UL/EN 60950-1 for Information Technology Equipment (ITE) applications are designed to operate at typical office and factory altitudes, which can vary from slightly above sea level to as high as 2,000-meters (6,562feet). Many power supply manufacturers provide units that are designed and rated for operation at higher altitudes, up to
3,000-meters (9,843-feet) so their supplies can be used in major cities located at higher elevations (e.g., Denver, Santa Fe, Mexico City, Bogota). Many broadcasting/communications stations/towers are located at altitudes up to 3,000-meters or higher in order to maximize their range. Altitude affects the design of power supplies since ‘air’ is used as an electric insulating medium (aka, dielectric) in the

Thermally conductive compound optimizes rheology in electronics TC-5622 Thermally Conductive Compound improves thermal performance and stability against hardening or dry-out in end-use applications. Product’s optimized rheology eliminates the need for common solvent diluents in the formulation, which can evaporate over time. The proprietary filler in the product results in a material with high bulk thermal conductivity and the ability to achieve thin bond line thicknesses (BLTs). This ensures low thermal resistance in both thin and thicker BLT applications that demand high heat dissipation. Product has a relatively low specific gravity that results in a cost savings compared to many TIMs. DOW CORNING http://ept.hotims.com/46000-81

PPS clients can subscribe to multiple something changed. With PPS, however, the service objects and PPS objects can have multiple publishers and subrestores its persistent objects on startup, then mainscribers. Thus, publishers can use one object to communicate tains them. When a client starts or reconnects it gets information to all that object’s subscribers. current data just by reading these objects. PPS clients must know which PPS objects are of interest. If they are publishers, they must know what to publish and when;

With PPS, the only connection between publisher and subscriber is an object, so if necessary designers can delay decisions on module connection points and data flow until runtime. These decisions are neither hardcoded nor directly linked, and can be adapted as requirements evolve—or even change dynamically as the system runs. PPS also simplifies integration of new components. Since publisher and subscriber don’t have to know each other, developers need only to decide what data new components should publish, and what data they need from other PPS clients. No API fine-tuning of APIs is required, and system complexity doesn’t increase.
PPS Implementation The QNX CAR platform provides an ideal use-case for PPS. Key capabilities of this application platform include: • HMI: HTML5-based • Information and entertainment: multimedia, radio, internet radio, weather reporting, support for phone- and home-based media • Automotive interfaces: climate control and virtual mechanic • Navigation, handsfree, speech, social networking
JNEXT code sample showing some basic interactions between the HMI and the PPS service.
The QNX CAR platform supports a variety of applications as well as a range of low-level software components connected directly to hardware devices. It thus requires a simple and scalable messaging model to handle communications between many disparate components. The HMI for the platform uses HTML5 with a JavaScript framework that includes the Sencha and jQuery JavaScript libraries. The system architecture is designed to support easy integration of other HMI technologies such as Qt, Adobe AIR, and Elektrobit GUIDE. The HTML5 and Cascading Style Sheets (specifically CSS3) facilitate migration of applications to and from the in-vehicle system and mobile devices (smartphones and tablets). The PPS messaging handles communications between most system components and the HMI. Since PPS messaging is technology- and language-agnostic, only a small number of APIs is needed to provide the interfaces between the HMI and the underlying components. Specifically: • a PPS API handles communications between the HMI and the PPS service • an SQL API interfaces with local media databases • UI core APIs handle communications between the HTML5 layer and a user interface core component, and An example of a JavaScript between this platform framework used for a component and media player application. other HMI technologies continued on page 18

Considerations to make when selecting
labels for electronic devices Labels often need to withstand extreme temperatures By Ron Ducharme, product manager, product identification, FLEXcon
There are as many reasons why labels need to adhere through temperature extremes as there are industries in which labels are used. Ranging from everyday use on air conditioners, home appliances and outdoor power tools and equipment to heavy industrial applications in the automotive market and computer assembly areas, labels need to serve a variety of functions throughout the life of the product. Often taken for granted, labels perform a critical function for the products they are adhered to. Important warning and safety information as well as proper operating instructions need to remain noticeable and legible. An important first step is selecting the correct combination of label film along with the proper adhesive and topcoat. Industry regulations, such as meeting UL and cUL standards, and the end-use application for which the label is intended play a vital role in that decision process.
Polyester film If your application temperature needs are less that 250F, polyester (PET) films would be the choice. Household appliances, outdoor power and garden equipment use PET films for bar coded identification labels for wires and hoses. Automotive uses include the inside-the-door labels that list the correct tire pressure, as well
as labels for under the hood and other critical applications like wire diagrams and warning labels. Durable polyester film labels are ideal for use where prolonged exposure to the sun, elevated heat generated by engines or moving parts can reach more than 100F. Important safety instructions on farm equipment and even everyday consumer lawn and garden machinery require labels that retain integrity and readability.
Polyethylene naphthalate PEN (polyethylene naphthalate) films possess a higher-temperature resistance than PET films. The automotive industry uses PEN films for some under-hood applications such as wire harness labeling. Battery information can also be contained on PEN films, used again because of their higher heat resistance. PEN films have a general service temperature range from -40F to 302F (-40C to 150C) and intermittent up to 500F (260C). A PEN construction with a permanent acrylic adhesive with a temperature range from -40F (-40C) to 302F (150C), topcoat designed for smooth print surfaces to allow for alphanumeric bar code printing, and an overlaminate to protect from the elements will, if applied properly, last for the intended life of the product.
Polyimide film Polyimide films (PI) are designed to meet the most challenging temperature extremes. One of the most demanding processes that high-temperature resistant films can be exposed to occurs during the manufacture of circuit boards. Exposed not only to extreme temperatures, but a variety of caustic chemicals and reflux washes, these labels have to not only adhere to the boards, but retain their readability for preprinted alphanumeric bar coding. PI films generally can endure temperatures up to 750F (398C) on an intermittent basis and up to 500F (260C) for a five minute steady duration without any loss of performance. The correct topcoat makes sure the surface is exceptionally smooth, which is critical for accurate bar code printing and alphanumeric scannability. In addition to surviving the circuit board manufacturing process, circuit board labeling must remain adhered during the high operating temperatures of many consumer
electronics. These labels act as viable asset tracking all through the manufacturing process and during consumer use.
Choosing the right combination means success There are many label stocks to choose from to meet both the performance and aesthetic needs of today’s OEMs. In order to select the right combination of film, adhesive and topcoat, as well as outside agency requirements it is vital to understand the end use requirements and the temperature extremes the label will endure. Taking all these factors into the decision making process will ensure that the labels will meet all expectations. Contract Manufacturing & Electronics Assembly
Do you have a safety net in manufacturing
What’s key to bringing innovative products to market in a cost-effective and timely manner? In manufacturing, adhering to a product development timeline is critical. If your company has had to design, manufacture and deliver products that are ahead of the competition, you know that every step in the manufacturing process is time sensitive. In fact, engineers need to understand how to best streamline the process. The ‘pain’ point in manufacturing isn’t money, according to Dominique Kwong, director of hardware and manufacturing, Recon Instruments, it’s about time. “We need to find the quickest way possible to make up for any deficiencies in the front end development process so we can adhere to our schedule,” says Kwong, director of hardware and manufacturing, Recon Instruments. “The challenge is finding an electronics manufacturing services provider that can work within our demanding schedules.”
Back in 2008, Recon looked for a local EMS provider to help build initial prototypes and guide them through their first efforts at mass production. At that time, Recon was launching its Heads-up Display (HUD) system for the sports/specialty market and had partnered with Zeal Optics to design the Transcend ski goggles. What was critical to the plan was finding an EMS provider that could meet their needs. What criteria should you use when choosing an EMS provider? Of most importance is determining the company’s equipment, skill and capabilities. “I assess an EMS provider by asking questions to find out if they are flexible and dynamic to design changes,” says Kwong. “I’m interested in knowing answers to questions such as; what are the capabilities of their equipment and staff? How do their processes and controls

Will the future of electronics be printed? By Sylvain Charbonneau, National Research Council Canada, Ottawa
Printable Electronics (PE) is the manufacture of electronic circuits using conventional printing approaches, and is rooted in the marriage of new materials and costeffective, large-area printing processes. Thin, light weight, flexible and low-cost – that’s what PE means. PE as an emerging field is great for Canada because it lies at the intersection of two well-established Canadian industries: ICT and printing. The technology enables lower cost manufacturing of electronic devices that will transform industries and markets. How big is PE? BIG. The global PE market, valued at US$2B in 2010, is forecast to grow to $55.1B by 2020 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of almost 40%. IDTechEx has estimated that the market value will likely reach $340B by 2030! To be clear, this longterm forecast of $340B is comparable to the magnitude of the silicon CMOS-based semiconductor market of 2009. Analysts expect that logic and memory devices will be a key driver, along with displays and photovoltaics (PV). Since there is gold in them there hills, the investment in PE has already started. In the European Union, with the support of taxpayers through the Framework Program, leading industrial organizations such as BASF, DeLaRue and Stora Enso, and Research and Technology Organizations such as VTT, Holst Center, and Fraunhofer are leading the way with innovations in materials, printing equipment and processes. They are targeting markets such as lighting, displays and photovoltaics – areas different from, though complementary to, National Research Council’s (NRC) activity focus on packaging and commercial/security printing, of which more later. We live now with interconnected technologies that are changing the way the world works. PE is an opportunity to think and act in new ways – economically, socially and technically. Virtually all things, all processes and all ways of working are becoming intelligent.
“Virtually all things, all processes and all ways of working are becoming intelligent” PE technology presents a transformative opportunity to add intelligence to printed products, allowing everyday objects to interact with customers in ways undreamt of five years ago. The fusion of ICT technologies and printing will lead to a revolution in the manufacturing of high-volume, interactive consumer products and security documents. Traditional Silicon micro-electronics processes have been successfully scaled to manufacture billions of objects per year, but tagging the estimated ten trillion retail items produced every year will require an entirely new fabrication paradigm which only PE can provide. PE will serve to unleash innovation in the Canadian Digital Economy by bringing new ICT solutions and competitiveness to the manufacturing sector, enabling the Internet of things. PE will not compete with silicon microelectronics but rather will complement it. PE technology will overcome Si-technology in functionally sparse & area constraint-

type applications (e.g., low frequency NFC/RFID where the tags areas are mostly defined by passive elements). Confirmation of PE’s innovative impact comes from discussions and consultation over the last year with Canadian industrial players who have indicated a strong drive to participate, excited as they are by the possibilities of PE’s new product paradigms: • Flexible, thin, lightweight: printable, cuttable, conformal – example, Building Integrated Photo Voltaics • Large area: lighting wall paper, extremely large displays • Low cost: printed NFC/RFID, embedded into everyday products such as smart packaging • Non-toxic: recyclable – even compostable, bio-compatible – from wearable to implantable/ingestible Tangible examples that demonstrate the promise of PE include: • Smart drug packages • Interactive packaging • RFID-enabled boxes • Next-generation banknote security • ePassport • Smart point of sale displays These applications are specific to the markets we have identified in the smart packaging, commercial & security printing as we will see later. The opportunity right now is to position Canadian industry as early adopters of PE solutions to make them global leaders in sub-segments of the addressable PE market: • logic and memory • conductors • photovoltaics • simple displays At the National Research Council we and our partners in PE are focusing on the niches in which Canadian industry already has great strength, and complementing rather than competing with the developments in Europe and Asia. NRC focuses on integrated, multifunctional PE devices, including elements for computing and communication (NFC/ RFID). In addition to the huge addressable market being targeted by this investment, the most compelling factors which have contributed to this selection include the willingness of industry surveyed to support the research area financially, the timeliness of the investment and the critical mass which could be attained amongst the collaborators within the supply chain leading to the deployment of developed solutions. Unresolved issues remain with respect to the scalability and cost of materials, the consistency of the processes (resolution/registration) and the reliability of the components and integrated devices fabricated via roll-to-roll methods. In fact, components such as transistors, diodes and memory have yet to be integrated into a package in which the individual elements are optimally matched. As such, current technology readiness levels present NRC with an opportunity to leverage and couple its expertise in materials and device fabrication to make a significant impact in the PE market. The total addressable market comprises portions of the following sub-segments
of the PE market: logic and memory (the fastest growing of all major PE subsegments, 95% of which is for RFID/NFC), conductors, batteries and photovoltaics (as a power source for integrated PE devices) and displays (simple displays for interactive packaging and point-ofsale smart labels). This total worldwide addressable sub-market is estimated to reach $12.1B by 2020 (out of $55.1B) and $119.1B by 2030 (out of $340B).
Printable Electronics Target Markets PE solutions connecting 4 industrial sub-sectors (see chart below): • Packaging • Security printing • Marketing • Health care
Consultations to date, both direct (with 45 companies) and indirect through outside consultants, have enabled NRC to focus on the applications shown here. All applications relevant for the Canadian industry revolve around the long term goal of fully printed RFID/NFC tags, which enables new products in: (1) packaging, (2) security printing and (3) commercial printing. This space is rich with potential applications of PE technologies. Packaging applications deal with logistics and inventory management with RFID, and extend towards brand authentication and interactive packaging. Security printing involves payment (banknotes and NFCenabled mobile payment), identification documents and lottery tickets, and also overlaps with marketing with loyalty card, gift cards and coupons. Finally, traditional commercial printing is ripe with application scenarios for PE, be it in advertisement such as flyers and posters, or in interactive newsprint. These applications feature a one-way or two-way interaction between the object and its user. While some of these applications can be created with relatively simple PE technologies, the ultimate common goal is the creation of entirely printed RF activated devices conforming to the Near Field Communication or Radio Frequency Identification Device standards.
The PE industrial value chain of the markets being addressed consists of three essential segments: production of materials, design and fabrication of devices based on these materials, and products in the packaging, commercial printing and security printing sectors which incorporate these devices. The end-users provide the pull, demanding low-cost, flexible designs that can be delivered quickly while providing a customer experience either unheard of or impossible to realize using traditional silicon electronics. The NRC PE Vision is to kick-start the Canadian PE ecosystem (materials-toproducts – see chart) • Engage end-user industry • Support development of supply chain • Reduce industry’s barrier to entry Materials production > Device design and fabrication > Products
In support of this vision and playing to NRC’s strengths, NRC PE efforts are concentrated in three Technical Thrusts, aimed at advancing the Technology Readiness Level of key elements to meet end user requirements: 1. Functional materials – semi-conducting ink, transistor package (electrode and dielectric) 2. Functional printed components & integration – RFID/NFC tags 3. Functional Imprinting – security & emerging markets This requires advances in various individual components: from simple conductors (for antennas) to logic & memory and interactive components (basic keyboard, basic display, etc.). Under each of these technical thrusts, industrially supported (in-kind) and sponsored (cash) projects will deliver solutions for commercialization of the technology. We have had successes already in a PE effort which, while building on NRC strengths of many years’ standing, dates only from 2012. The power of PE is changing the way we live, work, and play. Who knows what great idea is next? For more information on printable electronics from National Research Council Canada, go to http://ept.hotims.com/46000-120

west tech report
SmartGreenHouse - Taking Arduino-based solutions to the next level Innovators take notice. If you haven’t been bitten by the Maker bug yet, we Sohail Kamal strongly encourage it. Products such as West Coast Arduinos on the market today, along with Correspondent intermediate programming abilities, allow entrepreneurs to produce physical gadgets for a wide array of applications. I recently had the opportunity to speak about this exciting family of products with Don Gibson of Vancouver-based home and garden automation player Smart Greenhouse. Q: What makes Smart Greenhouse successful so far and what will drive your success in the future? “In a word, innovation,” says Gibson. “We have taken some old concepts and applied new technologies to allow both end users and commercial enterprises to connect real world devices in a way that was not available until a short time ago.” An Arduino is a single-board micro-controller designed to make the process of using electronics in multidisciplinary projects more accessible. It consists of a simple open source hardware board designed around an 8-bit Atmel AVR micro-controller. These devices interact with sensors and actuators programmed in ‘c’ that allow logical control and response, which sets the stage for a wide array of solutions. Q: So let’s say I’m taking a vacation for a few weeks. My prized garden needs watering while I am away. How can these devices help? “Your smart garden system can detect when the soil is dry, triggering a water valve or pump (actuators) based on the data from the soil moisture sensor,” says Gibson. “This results in an on-demand watering system, rather than a timed watering that takes place rain or shine, resulting in enormous savings which also prevents overwatering that can damage plants. These devices can also be programmed in the early morning to prevent water evaporation and deep soil sensors can be used as shut off triggers,” Gibson adds. “More importantly, because the system can be connected to the Internet, the owner can both monitor and control, in real time, any aspect of the system even when vacationing on the other side of the world.” Q: Arduinos: Why should this interest the electronics industry? “The Arduino family of devices are ‘open source’ and because of this, companies are able to create add-on devices to work with a very broad range of sensors and actuators,” says Gibson. “This leads the way for innovation.” Since inception in 2009, more than three millions Arduinos have been sold. However, these products need add-on devices called shields, and they need cables, connectors, sensors and actuators. As this industry grows, the opportunities for parts suppliers, innovators and engineers accelerate. For OEMs, the benefits are twofold. OEMs can produce complex solutions with Arduinos at a reasonable cost to their customers, and they can improve their automation processes by hiring lower cost companies that provide Arduino based solutions. Gibson provides a specific example of how SmartGreenHouse delivers such a solution. “Most warehouses use high bay lights, drawing huge amounts of current, which switch on in the morning and off at night. They draw 15 amps each, all day long, whether they are needed or not. So we can create detectors which only switch the lights on when someone is in the room. On demand, all day long.” By replacing the high bay lights with LEDs, and installing on-demand lighting system with detectors, his client reduced their lighting cost from $8,000 to $1,500 per year. On the flipside for some OEMs, Arduinos have spawned a young industry, challenging established Control System OEMs that use proprietary systems. Companies such as Johnson Controls have a longer track record, but their offerings are more expensive in construction and delivery. The Arduino type of device is small, inexpensive and versatile. “Automating a very small factory or enterprise was until recently a technically complex and expensive proposition,” says Gibson. “With this technology base, and specialized inexpensive sensors, the proprietary control manufacturers will experience a new generation of competition.” With an additional office in Perth Scotland, SmartGreenHouse is growing rapidly, looking to expand their reach beyond Canada and the UK and are looking for partners to help them grow. The open source nature of the technology will lead to much more sophisticated solutions, from industrial controls to home automation.
