The Age of AI Chips
BY IDTECHEX, CAMBRIDGE, UKGrowth of AI should continue unabated for the next decade
Artificial Intelligence is transforming the world as we know it; from the success of DeepMind over Go world champion Lee Sedol in 2016 to the robust predictive abilities of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the complexity of AI training algorithms is growing at a startlingly fast pace, where the amount of compute necessary to run newly-developed training algorithms appears to be doubling roughly every four months. In order to keep pace with this growth, hardware for AI applications is needed that is not just scalable – allowing for longevity as new algorithms are introduced while keeping operational overheads low –but is also able to handle increasingly complex models at a point close to the end-user.
Why and what of AI chips
Drawing from a couple of recent reports, IDTechEx predicts that the growth of AI, both for training and inference within the cloud and inference at the edge, is due to continue unabated over the next 10 years, as our world and the devices that inhabit them become increasingly automated and interconnected.
The notion of designing hardware to fulfill a certain function, particularly
Seminars are also back for 2024: please take in presentations from Nemko, Ampco and Ultra Tech and EMI and check with the sta at the front desk for additional talks at specific shows.
As producers of EPTECH, we are committed to helping connect electronics engineers and designers with solutions providers – in-person. Thanks for your support and have a great show.
Scott Atkinson Senior Publisher, EP&Tif that function is to accelerate certain types of computations by taking control of them away from the main (host) processor, is not a new one; the early days of computing saw CPUs (Central Processing Units) paired with mathematical coprocessors, known as Floating-Point Units (FPUs). The purpose was to o oad complex floating point mathematical operations from the CPU to this special-purpose chip, as the latter could handle computations more e ciently, thereby freeing the CPU up to focus on other things.
As markets and technology developed, so too did workloads, and so new pieces of hardware were needed to handle these workloads. A particularly noteworthy example of one of these specialized workloads is the production of computer graphics, where the
accelerator in question has become something of a household name: the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU).
Just as computer graphics required the need for a di erent type of chip architecture, the emergence of machine learning has brought about a demand for another type of accelerator, one that is capable of e ciently handling machine learning workloads. Machine learning is the process by which computer programs utilize data to make predictions based on a model and then optimize the model to better fit with the data provided, by adjusting the weightings used. Computation, therefore, involves two steps: Training and Inference.

SR&ED program: Current landscape and looking ahead
BY PETER EVAGELOU, MANAGER, R&D & GOVERNMENT INCENTIVES, GRANT THORNTON LLPThe Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program is the largest source of federal support for Research and Development (R&D) in Canada. Each year, more than 16,000 claimants receive over $3 billion in tax credits from the program, many of which are small to medium sized businesses.
Background
The SR&ED program has been around in different forms for decades, evolving based on government mandates and the economic landscape at the time. For years, organizations such as the Council of Canadian Innovators have advocated for changes to streamline and modernize SR&ED, including updates to:
• Broaden the definition of eligible expenditures to include the preparation and examination phase of protecting intangible assets (i.e., intellectual property).
• Ensure that SR&ED explicitly covers commercialization and continuous improvement activities.
• Develop education tools and resources to support auditors that work with data-intensive and advanced technology companies
The Government of Canada has announced that it will launch consultations in 2024 on modernizing SR&ED with a focus on how to better target the program to ensure that the support helps to position Canada as an R&D leader
(Update on federal innovation policies and initiatives - Canada.ca).
The federal government also noted that the Canada Innovation Corporation (CIC)—a funding agency announced in the 2022 federal budget to drive Canadian business investment in R&D—will need to be fully established before it takes over the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP). The federal government stated that this transition should take place by no later than 2026-2027; however, this delay represents four years from when the CIC was initially announced, emphasizing the need for other R&D incentive programs to be streamlined and refined in the interim.
The SR&ED program today has been criticized for having a high compliance burden and lengthy claim preparation process. Despite being a lucrative incentive, strict and complicated eligibility criteria make accessing the SR&ED program a
significant barrier for many, sometimes discouraging companies with eligible costs from claiming altogether.
Given the sheer volume of claims received on an annual basis, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) does not have the resources to conduct a detailed review of each claim to assess whether it is ineligible or noncompliant.
The CRA has also stated that it commonly sees incomplete or incorrectly filled forms, lack of supporting documentation, not disclosing certain types of financial assistance, and disclosure of inaccurate information. Perhaps the most problematic for claimants is the lack of supporting documentation.
Getting support
This is where SR&ED consultants come in. Experts in the field can play a role in preparing and defending claims and also informally as ‘frontline auditors’. According to the CRA, the best form of supporting documentation is contemporaneous—i.e., documentation that was
generated as the SR&ED project was being carried out. Documentation that is dated, signed, and specific to the work performed are the best supporting evidence that you can provide. For larger claims where disputes on claim eligibility sometimes land in Tax Court, many judgements are made based on the contemporaneous documentation that was generated and maintained as the project occurred.
To ensure that you have a su cient level of documentation available to support your claim in the event of a CRA review, you should:
• Implement project management software: For example, consider employing a system like JIRA, Confluence, Trello, and Basecamp to help you track projects as they occur.
• Use a time tracking system: Whether you update a simple excel sheet on a daily or weekly basis or use a more complex system like Harvest or Clockify, ask your team to track their activities throughout the year to e ectively di erentiate between tasks that are SR&ED eligible.
• Conduct regular technical meetings: Schedule weekly or monthly meetings held by R&D sta . A dedicated notetaker should capture technological challenges being experienced, work that is planned or undertaken to overcome those challenges, and any key learnings or takeaways.

What’s in store for 2024?
BY BYTESNAP DESIGNThe past year was quite eventful in the tech sector, where artificial intelligence went mainstream with the explosion of language learning models. As we arrive at 2024, the integration and evolution of AI in various domains are not just changing; they are set to revolutionise the way we approach design, development, and deployment in these sectors. With advancements in artificial intelligence accelerating at an unprecedented pace, we stand at the cusp of a new era where AI’s influence extends beyond mere automation to become a cornerstone of innovation and e ciency.
The engineering team at ByteSnap Design has been reflecting on the future of AI in the technology and electronics design industries. Here is the team’s forecast for the pivotal AI trends likely to emerge during 2024 to redefine industry standards and drive forward a new age of technological excellence.
AI assistant tools will continue to be integrated into existing tools to make tasks easier. An example of this happening this year is Zoom’s AI companion which can summarise meetings into notes. Expect to see development tools such as an IDE integration which can generate GIT commit notes, and release notes automatically during 2024.
We also predict companies will be trying to increase their profits with more monetisation from smart assistants such as Alexa and this will drive techy people towards open source alternatives, such as Home Assistant which run locally.
We anticipate that the first un-geofenced electric Robotaxis will become operational and start accepting paying customers over the coming months. This is likely to scale steadily over the next few years to replace Uber as the transport medium of choice, providing legal issues can be overcome. Ultimately, this will make car ownership a questionable decision because travelling this way could be cheaper than running a car.
Apple to enter Generative AI race
We look forward to Apple unveiling a product to join the AI arms race with their own large language model. Other companies are embracing AI faster and already implementing it; for example, Bard into Google Assistant, and Microsoft’s push for AI in their O ce 365 products. Nevertheless, Apple have a stronger than most in-house development philosophy, and
Electronic engineering jobs are not being threatened by the emergence of AI - at least not yet.
it’s hard to see them allowing these products to go unchallenged.
Expect announcements in late 2024 from Apple around its generative AI o ering.
Expect to see more innovation in the smart home market as consumers continue to look for ways to reduce their energy bills, with smart thermostats and TRVs becoming ever more popular. Nest are apparently trying to use AI to help understand consumers behaviour around energy consumption and we anticipate that this trend will continue.
AI-enabled Integrated Circuits
With Apple releasing their Pro Vision headset in 2024, we also expect to see some manufacturers trying to compete with a cheaper product. Apple are excellent at design and are sometimes seen as a trend setter, but in this case are quite late to the party With Meta already well-established leaders. However, Apple have a history of knocking out incumbent leaders so this could be an interesting space to watch.
How much of a consumer appetite there is for this type of technology, however, remains open to question.
We’re likely to see the greater emergence of AI on integrated circuits from companies such as Altered Carbon. Computer chip manufacturers, Intel, for
example, are incorporating AI cores into their CPUs. AI algorithms in our view are mostly used for detection/categorization. The classic example is using AI to detect whether an image contains a cat or a dog. However, even the way that the likes of Tesla use AI is similar – detecting images of signs for speed limits, or an image of the lines of the road – but the output is di erent in that it translates it into braking, accelerating or turning.
One of the projects we’ve worked on at ByteSnap sent accelerometer data into the cloud to detect people falling over. We see a scenario where a fall detector algorithm could be generated by AI and embedded within the sensor device, so that the huge amount of data does not need to be sent, allowing the product to consume less power.
Greater AI in Supply Chain Management
AI-powered forecasting is providing businesses with intelligence to prevent mishaps in the future, overcoming demand-supply mismatches to prevent overstock or understock of inventory.
This minimizes costs and improves customer experience. We expect to see more of this across 2024. Additionally, AI-based algorithms are automating goods retrieval from warehouses for smooth order fulfilment, and AI-powered autonomous vehicles are reducing driver costs for delivery.
Software development and electronics design are both areas that AI vendors are targeting, as developers are expensive and timescales can be long. We can see initially the AI could be best at optimising PCB layouts in the hardware side and writing generic functions within software, albeit with dubious copyright infringement.
Lack of freely available models
The work of translating very abstract requirements into real electronics still seems a very long way o though. This is partly due to lack of freely available models to train against in what is a fast-moving industry and little way for the circuits that are available to be assessed.
In addition, electronic engineering is actually quite a person-centred job; dealing with suppliers, customers, manufacturers, colleagues. Software AI trainers have raided github and ChatGPT was able to train linguistic models against the huge wealth of the World Wide Web. However, for electronics, it will take another generation of AI development before engineering jobs are threatened.
