National Trucking Week - Time to Embrace Change and Maximize Opportunities

T

Õ½îÆ àð¾ÇÕ³× ÔøåÅ - ìçñÅÁ ù ÁêäÅ Õ¶ ò¾è 寺 ò¾è î½Õ¶ ÇÃðÜä çÅ Ãî»

he National Trucking Week held from September 1st to 7th this year is a special occasion to acknowledge, spotlight and celebrate the contributions of the hundreds of thousands of men and women of the Canadian trucking industry who keep the country’s freight moving, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We extend congratulations and thank everyone who has chosen to build a career in the trucking industry. The variety of celebratory events organized across the country by industry patrons are a fitting tribute for the contributions made by professionals towards prosperity of our economy and the success of our communities. With a federal election around the corner, this is also an ideal time to seek commitment from all political parties to strengthen Canada’s transportation infrastructure as it is vital for our ability to remain competitive and prosperous. Trucking HR Canada has launched a new report, Millennials Have Drive 2 providing practical tips and insights on how employers can be more successful in recruiting from the millennial talent pool in an age where competition is high for qualified talent. Some of the recommendations that employers will find in the report include modernizing HR approaches with flexible work arrangements, commitment to professional development and training and strong employee communication programs. Schools are back and we wish all students, parents and teachers a learning year filled with cheerful moments. At the same time, we need to remember that more children will be walking and biking on our roads as they attend school. Please remember that road safety is a shared responsibility and everyone plays a significant role. Our much awaited hiring event ‘Jobs Expo’ will be held on Saturday, September 14th at the International Centre in Mississauga. With a galaxy of industry leading companies in attendance looking to fill jobs for drivers, owner-operators and non-driver positions like accounting, administration, dispatch, mechanics, sales, marketing and many more, there will be ample opportunities to learn, network and get hired as well. We look forward to welcome you!

Trucker Town Hall held in Brampton Brampton Regional Councillor Gurpreet Singh Dhillon and City Councillor Harkirat Singh hosted a ‘Trucker Town Hall’ on August 17th to discuss issues faced by the trucking and logistics community in Brampton. The meeting was held at Gore Meadows Community Centre where approximately 60 members of the trucking industry participated and provided both Councillors and city staff with valuable input. Concerns were raised on lack of rest areas and parking lots, increase in cargo theft incidents as well as road safety issues on major regional highways. Issues like Driver Inc., GTA West highway, rising insurance costs, unsafe work conditions, lack of professional training for new entrants to the industry were some of the other areas of discussion. Representatives from South Asian Trucking Association, Ontario Aggregate Trucking Association and Automotive Transportation Service Superintendents’ Association also participated in the meeting. “We wanted to hear directly from the industry and work on solutions” said Councillor Dhillon. “Logistics is one of the back bones of our local economy and I am glad we had a positive discussion,” added Councillor Singh.

Ontario to crack down on emissions system tampering Truckers who have tampered with their emissions system could have their plates seized in Ontario, no matter where their truck is domiciled. That’s due to changes made by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP), which is ramping up its enforcement powers through updated legislation. The changes are aimed at cracking down on trucks that have had their emissions system disabled or tampered with. Previously, officers could only seize plates and permits from Ontario-plated trucks. Other amendments allow for heavier fines, and a move is underway to increase enforcement abilities against providers and installers of delete kits in Ontario. “These changes signal a true commitment from the provincial government to clean up our air and create a level playing field for all trucking businesses that are operating in Ontario,” said Stephen Laskowski, president, Ontario Trucking Association.

One of the tractors being offered for rent by Vision Truck Group. Çò÷é àðμÕ Ãî±Ô ç°ÁÅðÅ ÇÕðŶ Óå¶ Ççμå¶ ÜÅä òÅñ¶ àðËÕàðź Çò¾Ú¯º ǾÕÍ

Vision, Enbridge team up to promote CNG trucks Vision Truck Group and Enbridge Gas are teaming up to rent natural gas vehicles, offering businesses a chance to test drive the technology without shouldering the premium purchase cost. The equipment will be available for the same cost as diesel power units, even though the trucks that run on compressed natural gas (CNG) could cost as much as $210,000. Natural gas engine maker Cummins Westport is also collaborating in the project. Three trucks are initially available. “This technology is not brand new, but this business approach is,” said, Vision customer relationship and brand manager Greig Howlett. Vision is the first dealership in Canada to offer CNG trucks for rent, he said. Those who are environmentally conscious, and want to bring down greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, should go for it, Howlett said. Natural gas vehicles can reduce GHG emissions by up to 25%, according to the Canadian Natural Gas Vehicle Alliance. The first company to test one of the Vision vehicles is Bunzl Canada, a cleaning and hygiene products supplier, which has begun using the truck on delivery routes in southwestern Ontario. The company called the pilot project an “exciting opportunity” to reduce its environmental footprint on some of its busiest routes. There are between 2,000 and 5,000 CNG trucks operating in Canada, and up to 90,000 in the U.S., said Bruce Winchester, executive director of the alliance. He put the number of CNG stations in Canada at 42, many of them in the key corridors of Ontario and Quebec. Worldwide, natural gas powers more than 27 million vehicles including two-wheelers, according to NGV Global Statistics. ROADTODAY.COM

Canada’s premiers have reaffirmed their commitment to adopting a minimum national entry-level training standard for truck drivers by 2021. The announcement came at their meeting in Saskatoon, where trucking issues were a major topic of discussion, according to a report by Canadian Trucking Alliance. The mandatory entry-level driver training (MELT) program, unveiled in the wake of last year’s fatal truck crash involving a bus carrying members of the Humboldt Broncos hockey team, is at various stages of implementation nationwide. The premiers also announced that the provinces are exploring online programming options for the in-class portion of commercial driver training. In addition, they completed reconciliation agreements that will address differences in the areas of occupational safety, transportation and technical safety. Specifically related to trucking, the provinces announced weights for single wide-base tires and dual tires will be aligned to make use of singles more practical for trucking fleets on major trade routes, the report said.

Atlantic truck drivers to test VR simulators

Áàñ»ÇàÕ àð¾Õ âðÅÂÆòð òÆ.ÁÅð. ÇÃî°ñ¶àð» çÆ êðÖ ÓÚ Ô¯ä׶ ôÅîñ

The federal government is investing more than $690,000 in a project that will test the value of virtual reality (VR) training simulators for truck drivers. The research, spearheaded by Trucking Human Resources Sector Council (THRSC) – Atlantic, is one of 10 new initiatives being funded through Canada’s Future Skills Centre. The council hopes to monitor 150 drivers over the next two years, including new Canadians entering the trucking industry through the Atlantic Immigration Pilot or other channels. The work will be based on four iMVR Iris simulators with eye-tracking capabilities. The Future Skills Centre is a partnership between Ryerson University, the Conference Board of Canada, and a non-profit research organization known as Blueprint.

CTA calls on provinces to adopt federal ELD rule

ÃÆ.àÆ.¶. é¶ Ã±ÇìÁ» ù ÂÆ.ÁËñ.âÆ. Çéïî ÁêéÅÀ°ä çÅ Çç¾åŠþçÅ

The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) is calling on provincial transport ministers to apply the electronic logging device (ELD) mandate to provincially-regulated carriers. The Alliance wants the recently announced federal rule – requiring thirdparty certified devices to be used – to be adopted by each province. As it currently stands, the ELD mandate would only apply to federally-regulated carriers. “The non-compliant hours-of-service behavior shown by the carrier and driver involved in Humboldt tragedy ( federally-regulated) is easily imitated by a minority of provincially-regulated carriers. Noncompliant behavior that leads to road safety risks knows no boundaries and certainly does not distinguish between provincially and federally regulated carriers when it comes to hours of service regulations,” the CTA wrote in a letter sent to each provincial transport minister. “In our view, the events and timeframes in the days prior to the Humboldt collision would have been much more transparent under an ELD regime. We must end the opportunities for this egregious and unsafe behavior regardless of whether the trucking company crosses provincial/ territorial boundaries or offers services within a jurisdiction.” CTA president Stephen Laskowski called paper logbooks an “outdated, time-consuming, unsafe” system.

Saskatchewan rest areas reopen The Saskatchewan Trucking Association (STA) is applauding the provincial government reversing its decision to close nine rest stops. Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure indicated that the rest stops would no longer be available to the public, a move that was met with complaints from several motorists, leading to the reversal. The rest stops in question are located along the Trans-Canada Highway, Hwy 7, and Hwy 9; two of these rest stops are specifically for semi trucks. Susan Ewart, executive director for the STA, said that the association is delighted with the announcement that the rest stops will remain open. The STA will be part of a committee that will provide feedback to the government on the future of rest areas in the province. The STA, along with other provincial trucking associations, have long advocated for additional rest areas for commercial drivers, particularly given the upcoming electronic logging device mandate coming to Canada in 2021.

Trucking anti-harassment àð¾ÇÕ³× Ã¯ôä Çòð¯èÆ training taking shape ÇÃÖñÅÂÆ é¶ ÇñÁÅ ÁÅÕÅð A federal government program aimed at reducing workplace harassment and violence in the trucking sector is taking shape following its launch last spring. Up to 400 employees will get sector-specific harassment and violence prevention training under the $2.45-million project, which is being handled by Trucking Human Resources Canada. The organization is looking at what training currently exists in this area, in Canada and internationally, in order to identify best practices in training and assessing the unique needs of the industry. Trucking HR Canada is working in partnership with provincial trucking associations, which will, in most instances, be the ones providing the training, she said. The trucking industry project is part of a larger government initiative called the Workplace Harassment and Violence Prevention Fund, which will provide funding to organizations to create safer workplaces for federally regulated employees. All projects will help workplaces comply with Bill C-65, a new legislation to protect employees from harassment and violence. Bill C-65 was passed by Parliament last year as an amendment to the Canada Labour Code. Trucking and logistics industry is the second-largest employer in Canada after the retail sector.

INDUSTRY DUSTRY NEWS

Feds offer greenbacks for green projects Funds from the federal carbon tax are now available to cover up to 25% of the cost of selected energy-saving projects in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and New Brunswick. The news comes as Environment and Climate Change Canada opens the Climate Action Incentive Fund’s (CAIF) project stream to businesses with fewer than 500 employees. Between $20,000 and $250,000 is available for eligible projects including clean transportation, switching fuels, and building retrofits, among other projects. But the funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis for a maximum of 90 days. A total of $106.7 million will be available during 2019-20. Ontario will receive most of it, accounting for $72.4 million. Investments through the Climate Action Incentive Fund may also be eligible for the accelerated capital cost allowance that allows businesses to immediately write off the full price of specified clean-energy equipment, the Canadian Trucking Alliance says. Incentives for aerodynamic devices and other technologies to reduce greenhouse gases are expected in coming months.

Freightliner Trucks has expanded its Team Run Smart careerand business-improvement platform to include a deeper focus on employment opportunities, the company said Thursday. There are some 63,000 members in the online community, which was launched in 2012. “Our goal is to leverage our Team Run Smart platform to address the issues related to truck driving, educate those who are considering a career in driving, and help those who are already drivers to be successful,” said Mike McHorse, director of channel marketing for Freightliner Trucks. Freightliner Trucks is a division of Daimler Trucks North America.

Volvo updates collision system Volvo has unveiled the latest generation of its Volvo Active Driver Assist (VADA) collision mitigation system, which will be standard in VNR and VNL models and available in the VNX. VADA 2.0 integrates radar and camera readings to monitor surrounding traffic and activate alerts or emergency braking if required. The system will be available in the third quarter of 2019, while several updates will roll out through the year to follow. The latest version of automatic emergency braking will operate across multiple lanes of traffic, while updated lane departure warnings include adjustable volume and mute settings and will allow drivers to turn the system off for up to 10 minutes. Highway departure warning and braking will slow a vehicle by a pre-defined speed if a driver doesn’t act on a lane departure warning. Adaptive cruise control with Cruise Auto Resume will automatically return a truck to cruise speeds when the vehicle begins to move above 16 km/h. A driver awareness support system builds on this with an in-cab windshield-mounted camera that combines images with data to support activities like driver coaching. Future updates will include adaptive cruise control with traffic stop and driver go, lane change support with adjustable audible alerts, and standalone data capturing that doesn’t require lane departure warnings. www.volvotrucks.ca WHEELS
