The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States announced a new air conditioning refrigerant, HFO-1234yf, can now be used in new cars and light trucks. This new refrigerant is to help automakers in the United States meet federal targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The EPA is following the lead of the European Union which set out mandates that will make all new vehicles sold in Europe by 2017 use the new refrigerant. General Motors has plans to introduce the new refrigerant in 2013 models of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac models. It will not be long before other car makers announce their plans to use the new refrigerant. At last year’s AAPEX/SEMA show, I came across plenty of talk about the new refrigerant specification; and manufacturers of A/C maintenance equipment were beginning to get ready to release products that are compatible with the new specification. In Canada, there has not been a lot of talk around this, for several reasons. It is very new and shops still have some time to get up to speed on the new refrigerant. And it will take a while before vehicles with the new refrigerant will start to make an appearance. I’m always puzzled as to why A/C maintenance is not a greater part of most shop’s business. One reason may be our own climate. There is a small window of time where most use their car’s A/C system aggressively. Summer last only so long before fall and winter set in; and spring can be a pretty miserable time of year, rain and cold that seem to drag on for far too long. Another is most A/C systems in today’s new vehicles are very robust. It is rare for these systems to fail catastrophically. So for many people, until the A/C system completely fails (usually from age), it is something they do not think about and never bother asking a technician to look at. Most shops have even dropped the traditional spring maintenance push where the A/C systems was inspected and adjustments were made. The new refrigerant specifications could help change that. With the investment in new equipment an investment in reaching out to long-term maintenance customers should also be made. Let them know you are ready to service vehicles with that new specification, along with older vehicles using the older refrigerant specification. You can even sell this maintenance work as a ‘green’ initiative as the new refrigerant is meant to reduce greenhouse emissions. A well-maintained vehicle also helps and A/C maintenance is just one part of a consistent maintenance sales strategy that needs to be better practiced by many shops.

Identifix Named One of Tech Shop Magazine’s “Top 5 Tools” for 2010
Identifix announced that the company is a winner of Tech Shop Magazine’s 2010 Top 5 Tools Award. Only 21 manufacturers were awarded this year’s honor. Each month, TechShop readers report the top five tools they use in their shop and on the job. Award winners are determined based on the number of times a company or product is mentioned by shop owners and technicians in the previous six issues of TechShop, in the Top 5 Favorite Tools section. “We’re obviously thrilled to be the recipient of this award, but even more rewarding is that this honor is determined by shop owners and technicians who count on us every day,” commented Jeff Sweet, Identifix president. “It can be a challenge to position an online product as a ‘tool,’ so this recognition also affirms that we’re an essential resource to shops, or as one of our customers recently put it: ‘as important as a 10mm wrench,’” Sweet added. Identifix serves the automotive aftermarket with a telephone-based Repair Hotline service to assist technicians in diagnosing vehicles in their repair shop — fielding 15-20,000 calls per month, and Direct-Hit, an online diagnostic information service that allows technicians to access the Identifix database of symptoms and potential fixes with over 25,000 subscribers.

Bosch Receives Award For QuietCast Brakes
Bosch has received the prestigious Frost & Sullivan 2010 North American Technology Innovation of the Year Award in the Brake Components Aftermarket for Bosch’s QuietCast brakes, which “...represent the first major technological improvement in friction products in more than five years,” Frost & Sullivan notes in the award. “Featuring a shim molded to the pad’s backing plate — rather than one attached after the friction with tabs or adhesive — this patented design significantly improves brake pad noise and vibration performance over competing aftermarket products. Bosch QuietCast is the only aftermarket brand that includes a molded shim,” said Frost & Sullivan. “The Frost and Sullivan Technology Innovation Award is recognition of Bosch’s accomplishments in the North American brake components aftermarket,” said Rob Backode, director of product management, Bosch Automotive Aftermarket Brake Components North America. “By recognizing the excellence and advantages of QuietCast brakes and its impact on the aftermarket, this award underscores the great benefits these brakes provide the motorist as well as the installer and distributor.”
Frost & Sullivan’s Automotive & Transportation group, which provides global industry analysis, custom consulting, market research, market forecasts, and insights into emerging technologies, officially presented the award to Bosch at the Frost & Sullivan February Awards Banquet in New Orleans.
AIA Canada Signs CASIS Agreement
The Automotive Industries Association of Canada (AIA Canada) announced an agreement was reached to sign-on to the Canadian Automotive Service Information Standard (CASIS). The voluntary agreement aims at ensuring the automotive aftermarket has access to emission and non-emission related service information, diagnostic tools and training information from all vehicle manufacturers in Canada. The CASIS agreement is supported by the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Association (CVMA), the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada (AIAMC) and the National Automotive Trades Association (NATA). The agreement inspires consumer choice for automotive service and repair in Canada and ensures that Canadian drivers have a choice between having their vehicle service or repaired, either at an aftermarket service facility or at an authorized OEM dealership. AIA Canada president Marc Brazeau states that the CASIS agreement represents a significant achievement for Canada’s automotive aftermarket industry and is confident that AIA members will benefit greatly from the voluntary access to information that is being provided by all vehicle manufacturers. “We are very pleased to be working side by side with the CVMA, AIAMC and NATA for the benefit of the entire automotive industry. This is a great day for AIA members and their customers across Canada,” stated Brazeau. hanging an air filter on a vehicle is a very basic procedure — open the air box, take out the old filter, pop a new one in and close the air box. Years ago, most North American cars had the big round filter that sat proudly on top of the large engine. Now there are many different types of filters crammed into tight spots. “Air filter sizes are down, but so are engine displacements which means lower air usage at the same RPM; however, in many applications RPMs may be higher than they were 20 years ago and the use of turbochargers may be more prevalent which would increase air flow,” said Susan Storey, product manager — Customer Care & Aftersales for General Motors of Canada Ltd. “Using ‘cheap’ air filters can possibly increase upper engine wear or possible MAS (Mass Airflow Sensor) failure.”
The air an engine needs By Nestor Gula
Understanding Air Filters and Oxygen sensors
“The capacity of the filter to hold contaminants and how well the filter removes contaminants are as important today as ever,” said Bruce Coffey, technical service manager at WIX Filtration Products. “However, air filters in today’s engines are more an integral part of the vehicle’s air induction system. With fuel injection and on-board computers, mass airflow measurements are used to optimize fuel usage and exhaust emission. It certainly can be more critical for some applications than others; but, in general, if the air filter causes the intake air stream to be changed greatly then fuel usage and exhaust emission are compromised. Filters are now more an integral part of the engine air induction system. They often need more moisture resistance since they can be remotely mounted and are more likely to come in contact with water or snow in extreme conditions (or at the car wash).” Coffey added that the visual inspection method still works very well. “Just a monthly check goes a long way toward good maintenance. This works well for both the air induction filter as well as the cabin air filter.” Storey cautions that Today’s oxygen sensors are built to last longer, but are susceptible to contamination that can shorten their lives. disturbing the filter and the air box can lead to problems. “If you open the air box to look at the filter then you might as well change it. Anytime you open the air box you disturb the seal and dislodge contaminant trapped in the filter. We should not recommend anything other than following the owner’s manual for mileage and driving conditions,” she said. An important element for making cars run smoothly and efficiently is the oxygen sensor. “Oxygen sensors are extremely important,” said Charles Gonwa, Oxygen Sensor Specialist for Bosch. “They keep the air/fuel ratio as at optimum, keep the engine operating at top efficiency, maintain vehicle performance, and protect the catalytic converter from damage due to excess fuel in the exhaust.” By more closely controlling a vehicle’s air/fuel ratio (AFR), fuel efficiency can be increased, while tailpipe emissions are reduced,” Sukhneet Mavi, technical service coordinator for NGK. “The oxygen sensor functions as the “eyes” and “ears” for the ECU, communicating whether the vehicle is running rich or lean. Theoretically, perfect or optimal combustion occurs when the AFR equals 14.7 parts air to one part fuel also referred to as the Stoichiometric Point. At the Stoichiometric Point, there is little or no pollution present in the exhaust stream. If the AFR is less than 14.7, the fuel mixture is RICH and harmful pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO) and un-burnt hydrocarbons (HC) are released into the environment. If the AFR is greater than Continued on page 12

Resist the temptation of offering cut-price filters
W
hen times are tough it is sometimes tempting to cut a few corners to make a few bucks — or pennies. The few bucks or cents you shave here might also lead you to lose a lot more down the line. Take for example the simple oil change. Competition has driven the price of this essential service so low that you probably think it’s not really worth to perform them without doing other work on the car. The temptation is that you can make a quick buck or two by substituting a no-name filter for a proper OEM spec one. There are many reasons not to do this. “Off-shore, no-name parts do not usually have the consistency in quality and delivery needed over time,” said Bruce Coffey, technical service manager at WIX Filtration Products. “A shop’s reputation can be questioned if using very generic, inconsistent parts. Knowing how this affects the bottom line can be tricky. “It often seems, by purchasing less expensive parts savings are generated right away. But in the long run, missed sales and catering to the lowest common denominator will erode the bottom line over time.” “A potential customer would be more comfortable seeing name brand products on the shelf and perhaps be more likely to do business with a shop like that,” said Susan Storey, product manager — customer care & aftersales for General Motors of Canada Ltd. “Name brand filters usually are familiar with OEM requirements and their filters meet those needs. In the event an issue occurs with a named brand filter, they will usually assist in resolving the

issue.” Use of filters from questionable sources can cause problems down the line. “Problems vary from premature engine wear to complete engine failure. You can end up with unpaid engine claims from some of these suppliers. ACDelco requires media that meets or exceeds the original filter put on at the engine plant. No-name brand filters have no obligation to meet or exceed those performance requirements.” “WIX uses filter media that is a blend of cellulose and glass fibres that are structurally bound by a phenolic resin to provide moisture resistance. No-name brands do not include glass fibres or a phenolic resin due to the expense of these items,” said Coffey. “The no-name filters do not have as much moisture resistance as a result. This can often be seen in used oil filters as wavy pleats.” He also added that while the noname filters will have some similar components that a quality filter has “the quality and performance characteristics of those parts, however, are not the same. Some filters can cause ‘leakdown’ of the oil in the engine while the vehicle is not in use (overnight). This can cause ‘dry-starts’ which increase engine wear.” With long interval oils now on many cars it is crucial to install a high quality OEM spec or higher oil filter during an oil change. These filters must survive intervals of 15,000 miles (25,000 kilometers) as some auto manufacturers specify. “Engine technology is much cleaner, so if the correct media is used the filters can last much longer in the vehicle than
By Nestor Gula they used to,” said Storey. Placing the proper spec filter is very important echoed Coffey. “It is difficult for a filter to survive the longer oil change intervals. Typically what are affected most are the rubber components and the filter media.” Like most shop owners know, there is no substitute for quality tools and parts. “It is good practice to use quality parts, equal to or better than OE, on anything you intend on keeping for a long time. Name brand helps link your good business name with another quality name,” said WIX’s Coffey. “A shop’s recognition can be helped by using a well-known and well established name brand.” SSGM The Fram Xtended Guard oil filter uses filtration media that is arranged in two plies and reinforced with a metal screen to deliver up to 10,000 miles of engine protection.

14.7, the fuel mixture is LEAN and is releasing harmful oxides of nitrogen (NOx) into the environment. Constant exposure to excessive amounts of harmful pollutants (NOx, CO, and HC) will eventually lead to catalyst failure, resulting in failed emission tests, poor fuel economy and costly repairs.” While most oxygen sensors get replaced when there is a warning light on the dashboard, “They should be replaced per the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended replacement interval,” said Gonwa. “This interval could range anywhere from 60,000 miles to 130,000 miles depending on the application. As always, when a DTC code appears and is O2 sensor related, a full and proper diagnosis of the engine management system should be performed to determine if the sensor is indeed defective or worn, and to determine if other system components and conditions caused the DTC illumination.” It should also be kept top-of-mind that problems with an oxygen sensor

could also be a sign of a problem somewhere else in the engine. Think of the oxygen sensor as a canary in the coal mine. Oxygen sensors can be damaged by contamination, from excessively rich fuel or oil or additives in the fuel. They may also suffer damage when sealants around the engine have started to fail. Novice technicians should be made aware that the oxygen sensor is sometimes not the cause of a trouble code that is pulled during a routine use of
the scan tool. If there is a lean condition, the oxygen sensor will tell the vehicle’s onboard systems to enrich the fuel mixture. A vacuum leak can also appear on diagnostic scan as a faulty oxygen sensor. So it is always a good idea to take a little time to see if there is something else causing the ‘problems’ with the oxygen sensor before laying the blame on the sensor itself. SSGM

Taking Training Online Scan tool makers offer a growing library of technical and training courses online By Tom Venetis, Editor

can tools are now as common and used as often as a torque wrench or screw driver inside today’s service bays. Once they were considered tools only to be used by the most experienced of technicians because of their complexity and the systems they were meant to diagnose. Today, scan tools have become not only more complex, but surprisingly simpler to use, designed to walk even novice technicians through a diagnostic procedure. It would seem, then, that there is very little need for training on the tools. The reality is that while the tools have become easier to use, there is now a greater need for training than ever before.
Tool makers taking the lead in training – both online and in class
But why is training now needed more than ever if the tool are becoming easier to use? The simple answer is that today’s vehicles are more complex than ever before, with an increasing number of modules and control systems operating a wider range of vehicle operations. It may be an easy thing now to pull a trouble code; the challenge is to know how to track that trouble code back to the specific fault and then knowing how to fix the problem, which all too often not an easy thing to do. “Tools have certainly have become more intuitive,” said Pat Pierce, director, product development and marketing, professional diagnostics, with SPX Service Solutions. “What people often misunderstand about (scan) tools is that it is becoming less about how to navigate the tools, to push the buttons, 14 SSGM March 2011

than it is more about the diagnostic process content – what it is that you are navigating towards and what it is that you need to understand about the diagnostic process that you are in.” John Mills, national technical trainer for Canada with SPX Service Solutions, added that for SPX scan tool training involves a coordinated approach with technicians learning from instructors about the tool through the use of realworld diagnoses examples. For example, J2534 reflashing www.ssgm.com
sounds relatively easy. However, it would be a mistake to assume that just knowing how to use the scan tool to identify the issue is enough. “A technician needs to know how to relate that information to finding workable fixes for the vehicle in a timely manner, which “is a lot more than just telling a technician what button to push.” SPX Service Solutions has also moved aggressively to offer its Canadian and American users of its diagnostic

The scan tool course involves training technician on on menu navigation, tool setup, scan tool updating and data stream analysis, and reading codes and testing procedures. At the same time, SPX make available a range of online resources as well for the Pegisys tool, with information on YouTube and the OTC Web site (www.otctool.com), as well as through www.tstseminars.org and CARS OnDemand (www.carscouncil.ca/ho). “There are several reasons why Web-based training is a good thing,” Mills added. “For one, it can be done on a technician’s own time and he or she can review the material as many times as they wish. With on-site training, perhaps 80 per cent of the people attending the classroom training may grasp the information fully the first time around. “Having the information and training on the Internet allows a person to review the material and better grasp what was discussed and thereby reinforces the (classroom) training.” SPX Service Solutions plans to continue to rollout more Internet-based training programs around new features in the company’s roster of diagnostic tools and new diagnostic processes. Pat Staarmann, sales director for training program with Delphi Product and Service Solutions said Delphi now has a team of ten trainers across North America leading a range of training courses that focus how to use a scan tool’s features to more quickly diagnose and fix problems. “What our trainers do is go through real-world examples,” said Staarmann. “They have a scan tool in the class and they will go through several examples of reading specific codes and troubleshooting issues. We have eight courses that are specifically geared to the ODB II scan tool and getting the most value out of that scan tool, and using the codes to really pin-point the failure. Embrace the Wire, or Else I By Jim Anderton, Technical Editor
New York-based ABI Research, 10 per cent of new vehicles shipped in 2010 carried advanced electronic systems like adaptive cruise control and wireless Bluetooth connectivity … but that number will be 62 per cent in 2016.
f you’ve lived long enough, you’ll occasionally ponder the “what ifs” in life and speculate about the history that might have been. I started in this industry by working maintenance in an auto parts plant that employed mostly women on long manual assembly lines. As a typical single young man, some were a little more noticeable than the others. One young lady in particular used to catch my attention a lot. She was petite, blonde and pretty with a great personality, sparkling eyes and a killer smile. She was also a talented wildlife artist and liked pickup trucks and dirt bikes, an overall combination that most sensible country-bred twentysomething Canadian men would climb barbed wire to get to. What does this have to do with the service aftermarket? I believe that telematics is the pretty blonde in our industry, except too few of us see the attraction. According to New York-based ABI Research, 10 per cent of new vehicles shipped in 2010 carried advanced electronic systems like adaptive cruise control and wireless Bluetooth connectivity … but that number will be 62 per cent in 2016. And as engine reliability improves, maintenance intervals lengthen and kilometers driven remains static or falls, long term thinkers have to be looking to the future of the industry. That future is clearly in the electronic accessory systems. You might be thinking that the stereo and auto electric guys adequately cover that business, but the reality is that the car of the future is more likely to break in the driver support systems like ESC, advanced ABS and GPS navigation than through mechanical systems. And as these systems become more safety critical, the red light on the dashboard will be a must fix, not an ignore-until-smog-check inconvenience. In the near future, dysfunctional ABS or ESC will be as unacceptable as worn tires or brakes. The opportunity is enormous and even better, the work is cleaner, smarter and should be more profitable than brakes and suspension ever were. But do we have the training and tools? The recent access to information agreement with the OEMs’, weak as it is, is a good start and the systems themselves will self diagnose to a greater extent than ever, but as any good diagnostic tech knows, nothing beats experience. Sensors and actuators will still form the bulk of the work, but there will be a lot more of them and they will be “smart” requiring simulated inputs and knowledge of complex output signals to find the problems. None of this will require a degree in electrical engineering, but it will take time to learn. If that learning happens on customer vehicles you might be out of work (or business) before you get up to speed. What does this have to do with the pretty girl on the assembly line? Through some long forgotten stupidity, I never asked her out. While this didn’t necessarily alter either of our lives in a significant way, I do wonder how she’s doing every once in a while. Don’t let this scenario represent you and telematics. Get close to Bluetooth, GPS, Adaptive ABS, Park Assist and the rest now, or end up looking at it from your rear-view mirror. And Annette Miller, if you’re out there, drop me a line!

Choosing the Right Scan Tool to Fit Your Needs By Tom Hamilton, Curriculum Developer CARS
T
he level of technology in vehicles has increased dramatically within the past few years making vehicle diagnosis a hair pulling experience if you do not have the proper tools. With electronics controlling almost every aspect of a vehicle, a scan tool is a must when it comes to diagnosing a component or system fault. The challenge is that it may be difficult to find a scan tool that has the ability to access all available systems for every make and model of vehicle on the road. Every scan tool will have its advantages and disadvantages when it comes to accessing various modules on different vehicles. One scan tool may be able to access all the modules on one make or model of vehicle while another scan tool may have limited access. This situation may be reversed using the same two scan tools on a different vehicle. If you are looking to buy a new scan tool this can cause somewhat of a dilemma and you will need to do your homework before you decide to make a purchase. Here are a few things that may help with your decision. If you work at a repair facility where most of the vehicles coming in for diagnosis are of a specific make, the choice should be based on capabilities of the scan tool with those vehicles in mind. However, if you are working at a repair facility that performs diagnostics on all makes and models of vehicles, the decision of which tool to purchase should be based on that situation. Keep in mind that to provide a wide range of diagnostic capabilities may require that you purchase different types of scan tools to cover the various vehicle makes and models. www.ssgm.com
The next thing you should look at is the capabilities of a scan tool on various vehicles. Most scan tool manufactures will supply information of their scan tool’s capabilities for each make, model and system of a vehicle. Some manufactures will also allow you to use a demonstration model for a period of time which can be extremely helpful. If this opportunity arises, connect the scan tool to every vehicle you can so you know first hand what the capabilities are for each vehicle. Also talk to technicians from other repair facilities, they can provide you with feedback on the scan tools they are using. To improve the tool’s diagnostic capabilities manufactures may offer a variety of features as part of their scan tool or as optional equipment. These features may include digital meters, oscilloscopes, temperature probes etc. Having all these features incorporated into one scan tool at your finger tips can reduce diagnostic time and the amount of testing equipment needed around the vehicle. As an example, some scan tool models allow you to switch from viewing scan data to viewing gas analyzer data with a press of a button. Another feature that some manufactures offer as part of their scan
tool software is specific service information. This information can include a description and operation of system components and wiring and connector diagrams. They may also provide testing procedures for specific components. Scan tool manufactures often provide a library of possible fixes for various vehicle issues so a technician is aware of common problems that can cause certain faults. These tech tips are not intended to replace the need for performing the proper diagnostic procedures provided by the vehicle’s Service Information, but to assist the technician in a successful vehicle diagnosis and repair. Most importantly, ensure you are utilizing the full capabilities of the scan tools available to you when it comes to diagnosing a vehicle. Participating in scan tool training courses or taking some time to practice with the scan tool either by using it in demonstration mode, if available, or connecting to various vehicles at the shop can be a great asset. This will increase your diagnostic capabilities and confidence. Remember, scan tools do not repair vehicles, technicians do! Coming Soon To Your Service Operation Hybrid vehicle technology has moved from the esoteric to the mainstream and moving into your service bays
T
he automobile industry is solidly behind moving the traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) towards new engine designs that benefit from a partial or full electric motor assist. Recent hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) are crammed with new technologies that enhance performances, improve fuel economy, reduce exhaust pollution and contribute to passenger safety and comfort. Car shows in Detroit, Toronto and Montreal have all showcased some of the most recent hybrid vehicles set to roll onto North American streets and soon into your service operations for maintenance and repair work. Here is what has appeared at the car shows: Hyundai joins the green club this year with its hybrid Sonata. The Korean manufacturer opted for a set of lithium polymer batteries and
a six-speed box instead of the popular continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Honda Insight showcases the company’s intelligent ECO assist system to maximize fuel economy. On the other hand, the next-generation Lexus CT 200h has a variety of driving modes: Normal, Sport, Eco and full EV. At BMW, the Active Hybrid 7 is considered a mild hybrid, matching best performance versus weight end efficiency. Porsche turned its Cayenne into a hybrid, a luxury SUV more enviro friendly, enabling the sporty off-roader to cruise exclusively on its electric motor.

infrastructure to refuel them. The question is: where will these vehicles go for service and maintenance? Will it be to the dealers, independent shops or your computer geek? Let’s take a moment to recap some of those new vehicle technologies.
Hybrid types
Hybrids are now classified according to the importance of the electric components and how they work together with the internal combustion engine. These are the most commonly accepted hybrids and how they work: • The Micro Hybrid solution is the entry level of hybrids. It features a Stop/Start mode with a reversible electric motor that fills both duties of the starter and the alternator. The engine comes to a dead stop when brake pedal is maintained and the vehicle is under five km/h. The first generation of Silverado 42 volthybrid had this feature around 2004. The industry wants to implement this technology across the board around 2015. • Mild Hybrids take you to the next level. The Stop/Start mode is still around, but the technology goes another furlong. Regenerative braking capacity kicks in to recharge a set of batteries (electric motor generates kinetic energy through braking).
The Mitsubishi i-MIEV joins the Leaf and could be the perfect urban mover.

|| Hybrids Batteries or super condensers then provide assistance to a small displacement gasoline engine. • Full Hybrid is the most popular formula. It combines thermal engine and electric motor(s). If power from both sources reaches the wheels directly, this is a parallel architecture, just like a Honda Insight or CR-Z. The other is an epicyclical drive train (a serial or parallel architecture), aka the Toyota Prius. • The Series Hybrid is an architecture where a combustion engine feeds an electric generator which in turn runs an electric motor that propels the vehicle. Using sophisticate computer software, batteries will store enough energy for the vehicle to drive all electric. Regenerative braking lengthens its autonomy in urban conditions. • A Plug-in Hybrid is a series or parallel structure that uses a common power outlet – 120 or 240 volts – to recharge the batteries and enables the vehicle to travel electric-only over short distances.

Mitsubishi’s proposal has been the i-MiEV (acronym for Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle). It features a 16 kw all-electric power plant with lithium-ion battery packs. A full recharge spans over 14 hours on a regular 120 volt outlet or seven hours on a 240 volt. With a special 400 volt outlet, 80 per cent of the charge can be gained within 30 minutes. Nissan was the first major manufacturer to reach the consumer with the Leaf, a subcompact based on the Versa and already available in selected markets across the USA and shortly in Canada. Finalist for the North American Car of the Year, it earned the award in Europe. The power train is a single 80 kw electric motor fed by lithium-ion batteries. A full recharge can last up to a long 20 hours on a regular 120 volt outlet, but down to eight hours only with a quicker 240 volt source. A special charging unit will need barely 30 minutes to reach 80 per cent of the capacity. It is mandatory to have an outside 240 volt source under British Columbia housing laws for every new unit. The industry is close to standardizing the hardware: voltage, breaker, plugs. The Leaf has an intelligent navi
The Chevy Volt is a Series Hybrid type with a long-range capacity. Green Car of the Year at the Los Angeles car show, it clinched the coveted allaround award in Detroit. The architecture is different here: the power train starts with an 84 horsepower Ecotec 1.4 litre four cylinder that turns into a generator to top up a set of lithium-ion batteries. Combined, they deliver 150 horsepower for better accelerations. This package provides the Volt a range of 80 km on batteries alone and 500 km when the gas engine kicks in, with a maximum speed of 160 km/h. A complete charge will require eight hours on a regular outlet while a 240volt plug will do the trick in just three hours through a specific recharge system. GM announced a Chevrolet Volt owners would benefit from an eightyear or 160,000 kilometres warranty on the li-ion battery. The Chevrolet Volt will debut in selected areas like California, New York and Washington DC, Michigan, Connecticut and Texas. nology. For 2012, a new generation of Prius plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is stepping in. The technology sits halfway between hybrid and electric. The Prius is a parallel hybrid with a 60 kw electric motor linked to a 98 hp 1.8 litre gas engine, totalling 136 hp. What is new is the plug-in lithiumion battery pack. Complete recharge requires three hours on a regular outlet and half the time using a 240-volt plug. Electric autonomy is about 20 km with a top speed of 100 km/h, while in normal operation the vehicle could reach 160 km/h. At this point in Canada, a few provincial hydro societies and universities have been testing the product. || Belt Diagnostics
Taking on the Belt and Hose Want to generate some profit? Here are a few handy tips on belt By Tom Venetis, Editor and hose diagnostics that will do just that.
S
ometimes, we get too wrapped up in the job we are doing to notice a problem that is staring us right in the face. When you have a vehicle up on the hoist for an oil change or even some brake work, how often do you take the time to check the engine belts? How often do you look at the hoses when you are swapping out an old air filter or checking fluid and oil levels? This is not a criticism. We are all very busy and likely focused on doing the very best for the customer’s vehicle. If you do a bang-up job on that brake work or get a person’s vehicle in and out of the shop quickly during an oil change, with a vacuumed interior thrown in as well, you will likely have that customer come back. The problem is if after that profitable oil change or brake work that customer’s vehicle experiences a hose or belt failure, your shop will likely get the blame. The customer will ask why, when the car was in the shop’s bay, the problem with that belt or hose was not noticed? SSGM Magazine has written a number of articles over many years on belt and hose maintenance, so we are going to summarize some key things to look for which can tipoff a technician that there is a potential problem and demands the belt or hose be replaced. It takes only a few minutes and can be made part of any technician’s normal workflow on any job. Those few minutes can result in more profits and happier customers.
needs to be replaced and this caused by age, heat and stress. Cracking is another obvious sign that the belt needs to be replaced and often results from age, high temperatures and stresses placed on the belt as its operates. Sometimes improper installation of the belt or misalignment can cause premature wear leading to belt failure. Improper installation will cause the belt rib to begin separating from the jointed strands which after time will spread and cause the belt to unravel. Misalignment issues will be visible on the belt by the sidewalls of the belt appearing glazed or frayed. A keen ear can even pick-up the noise such a problem produces. Now, these tips are for traditional Neoprene belts and many technicians have spent a good part of their working lives diagnosing and replacing these belts. But over the last
Troubleshooting Belt Failure
Serpentine belts are the literal lifeline of the engine. If that belts brakes, it can cause a host of costly problems for a person’s vehicle, including failure of the alternator, water pump, power steering system or the air conditioning. Any of these failures will cause a fuming customer to enter your shop, especially if the failure could have been avoided with a few quick visual inspections of the belt. Take the time to look for such things as belt abrasion, where the each side of the belt looks shiny or glazed. This is usually caused by the belt coming into contact with some foreign object or improper belt tension or a mismatched pulley bearing size. Chunk-out is another sign the belt 30 SSGM March 2011

|| Belt Diagnostics few years, EPDM belts have begun to replace the older belt technologies. The advantage of EPDM is that it last longer and is resistant to noise and cracking. The challenge for a technician is that it is visually harder to detect belt wear and failure as the traditional signs of chunk-out and cracking do not happen. These belts do wear, but over time, steadily losing rubber material. To make it easier to diagnose belt wear Gates Corporation offers a free belt wear gauge that allows a technician to see how much material has been lost. SSGM Magazine has a video at http://www.ssgm.com/videos/ play/?plid=1000402238 demonstrating this tool and showing a belt replacement using a Gates Micro-V AT EPDM belt.
Don’t wait for the hose to break
Having a hose break is never a good thing. I once had a cooling hose break and it was not a pretty experience. As with belts, signs of wear can be spotted if the time is taken to look for them. The most obvious sign of trouble is if there is moisture or dripping from around the clamps or connections on a hose. While this might be cause by a clamp not being on tight enough, a technician should take it as a sign that the hose may be deteriorating. If the clamp is on tight and in good condition, it is likely time to replace the hose before some-

thing goes wrong. Electrochemical Degradation (ECD) damage is another problem that can affect a hose. ECD is a bit tricky as it is not obvious by a simple visual inspection. The hose will look fine to the naked eye. The surest way to tell if a hose is experiencing ECD is by feel, noting any voids, crack or weak spots. If there are any, that hose has to be replaced, preferably with a hose that is made to withstand ECD damage. Just as feel can help diagnose an ECD-compromised hose, a hose that feels soft, spongy or showing telltale swelling can be signs of the hose suffering oil damage. Oil can react chemically with the rubber and cause the structure of the molecular bonds to weaken and separate by layers which is the cause of the swelling. Along with replacing the hose, take the time to track down the oil leak as well. Hoses can also be damaged by excessive heat or abrasion or even ozone caused by pollution. In any case, checking the hoses anytime the vehicle is in the shop is a sure way to catch problems before they result in something unpleasant happens for the driver; and it is a sure way to increase customer satisfaction and profit. New J2791-Certified Refrigerant Leak Detector Tracer Products has unveiled the TP-9364 PRO-Alert 2791, an electronic refrigerant leak detector that utilizes an infrared sensor to accurately detect refrigerant leaks down to 0.1oz/year (3 g/year). Its threeposition sensitivity switch minimizes false triggering and allows for easy diagnosis of small, medium and large leaks. The unit is sensitive to R-12, R-134a and all other HFC refrigerants, and is certified to meet the new SAE J2791 standard for electronic refrigerant detectors. Unlike heated sensors, the PRO-Alert 2791’s infrared sensor offers consistent response throughout its life, and will not become contaminated by exposure to large amounts of refrigerant. The unit’s high-efficiency air sampling pump provides quicker response and quicker clearing (“zeroing”). The PRO-Alert 2791 is powered by a rechargeable NiMH battery, which provides over six hours of use between charges. On-board diagnostics indicate charging status, and alert the user to low battery or infrared sensor failure. The unit can also be used with a 120 VAC power adapter and a 12 VDC power adapter with cigarette lighter plug (included). All components are packed in a rugged plastic carrying case. Hunter Debuts New HawkEye Elite Alignment Hunter’s HawkEye Elite alignment system comes with QuickGrip adaptors and three-dimensional targets to accelerate service with set-up times in seconds instead of minutes. Spring-loaded clamping arms adjust easily to various wheel sizes, and a simple thumb lever locks the clamp in place. Technicians can quickly attach the adaptors without concern for a perfectly centered target; off-centered positioning has no effect on measurement accuracy. The system’s clamping arms grip the tire tread instead of the rim edge, removing the worry of damaging expensive rims from metal-to-metal contact. Only a protective rubber ring at the base of the adaptor contacts the rim. The entire adaptor and target assembly weighs only six lbs., making it easy to handle and install. A special shop-tough polymer construction makes the assembly tolerant of accidental drops. The target itself contains no electronics and requires very little maintenance. Additionally, the assembly’s ultra-compact profile easily fits between narrow lift posts and other tight constraints. Hunter Engineering Company www.hunter.com
