Third of Glasgow children living in poverty Issue 4 | 17th - 23rd October 2014 | Published by Caledonia Publications
Campaigners unveil child poverty map of UK, showing Glasgow as the worstaffected area in Scotland. By Ross Swanson and Fiona McNicol
A THIRD of children in Glasgow are said to be living in poverty, it was announced by campaigners this week. The city has been revealed as having the worst problem of child poverty in Scotland with 1 in 3 kids living with hardship, rather than the national average of 1 in 5. In total, a staggering 220,000 children across the county are said to be living below the breadline. The Campaign to End Child Poverty published the new figures which provide a child poverty map of the whole of the UK. The figures are broken down by parliamentary constituency, local authority and ward. Campaigners also warned that the figure of those in poverty is set to swell to uncontrollable levels by 2020 if government action is not taken.
This is the first time local child poverty has been mapped after taking housing costs into account. These new figures look at the extent of child poverty based on disposable income after meeting housing costs – an essential family expenditure – which shows the real, hidden extent of the number of families struggling to make ends meet. Families with children living on less than £204 a week after housing costs are classed as being in poverty.

Outrage from disgusted viewers followed. She has since apologised for her comments but faces being sacked from the show.

CHILDREN LIVING IN POVERTY: The poverty map shows Glasgow as the worst affected area in Scotland
Continued from front page Chair of End Child Poverty David Holmes said: “These figures reveal just how widely and deeply child poverty reaches into our communities, even those areas generally regarded as well off. Far too many children whose parents are struggling to make a living are suffering as a result and missing out on the essentials of a decent childhood that all young people should be entitled to. We can and must do better for our children. “Poverty ruins childhoods and reduces life chances. Failing to invest properly in children is a false economy: already child poverty costs the country £29bn each year and in the long run taxpayers will foot an even higher bill for correcting the damage.
stark picture of a socially segregated Britain where the life chances of millions of children are damaged by poverty and inequality. But it also gives us reason for hope. The child poverty target has already been met in the Prime Minister’s constituency and nearly a hundred others, so never let it be said that the targets are impossible to meet. “The Prime Minister should make a New Year’s resolution to keep his pledge to ‘make British poverty history’ so that children all over Britain can enjoy a childhood free from poverty.” Two weeks ago, Glasgow City News reported on Glasgow’s Needy – the food bank set up by Andrew and Darren Carnegie to help the poorest families in Glasgow.
These figures reveal just how widely and deeply child poverty reaches into our communities
particularly hard to see families with children, often with no food, let alone presents, at Christmas time. The Carnegies are keen to help as many people as possible and will continue to run the food bank, but Darren says it’s the root causes of the poverty problem that needs to be looked at. “When we’ve been out delivering food to people and seeing how people are forced to live, I’ve been completely shocked. It’s shameful that there is poverty like this in Scotland.” He said. GLASGOW’S NEEDY: Darren Carnegie (pictured) says the root causes of poverty in Glasgow need to be addressed
“We are calling on politicians of all parties to urgently set out a clear roadmap towards ending child poverty which includes the additional actions needed and the measures by which progress will be tracked.” Alison Garnham, Executive Director of the Campaign, added: “The child poverty map paints a

Darren added: “We’re fighting for the humanitarian aspect but it’s the politics that has to change to make the fundamental difference. There shouldn’t have to be food banks. We shouldn’t have to do this.” “We’ll never stop talking and campaigning to put a stop to poverty. It’s not the people in living in poverty’s fault – it is society that needs to change.”
FUNNYMEN Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill were likely celebrating this week after news broke that their hugely popular Still Game Live show had broken records at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro. The 13,000 capacity arena played host to 21 sold out shows in a run that ended last week.
“Still Game live at The Hydro has been a phenomenal success. Comedy theatre is fast becoming a major part of our business and judging by the reaction to tickets going on sale and the numbers through the doors over the last few weeks there is clearly a massive appetite for comedy out there.”
Around 210,000 fans in total went to see the comedy duo reprise their roles as witty pensioners Jack & Victor, alongside series regulars Winston, Isa, Tam, Navid, and Boabby. A Hydro spokesman revealed that the 3 week run raked in an impressive £6million in ticket sales, the highest the venue has ever seen.
He added: “We’re honoured to have hosted the return of such a well-loved cast - it will be sad to see them go!”
John Langford, Director of Live Entertainment, The SSE Hydro and SECC said:
The popular BBC TV series ran between 2002-2008 and is widely considered to be the greatest Scottish sitcom of all time. Fans will no doubt be clamouring for a return to the small screen next following their successful live performances.
Meat thief jailed for three years By Ian Lesley
AN armed robber who stole two legs of lamb from a store after threatening to stab staff has been jailed for three years. A supervisor became suspicious of Kenneth Wilson as he browsed the aisles at a branch of Farmfoods in Glasgow’s Maryhill area.
Myasar Al-Muqhafar watched as Wilson, 49, put a basket he was carrying into a freezer and placed the cuts of meat in carrier bags he had brought with him. The supervisor alerted a work colleague, Scott Bradley, to his suspicions and both went to confront Wilson.
Wilson was asked to remove the meat from the bags and leave the store in Shiskine Drive. He replied “what” and pulled out at large kitchen knife with a blade up to six inches long. He pointed the weapon at the employees
and walked towards then and aggressively said: “I’m going to stab you.”
Wilson fled from the shop still carrying the knife in one hand and the bags with his haul of meat in the other. Police officers viewed still images taken from CCTV of the robbery and identified Wilson as the perpetrator. Officers went to his home in Wyndford Road, Glasgow, and detained him as he left a lift. A search of his flat failed to find any useful evidence.
Wilson was interviewed and denied any involvement but later admitted he assaulted Mr Al-Muqhafar and Mr Bradley by brandishing a knife at them and robbing them of two legs of lamb on June 22 this year, when he appeared in court. He committed the offence after he was granted bail earlier that month at Glasgow Justice of the Peace Court.

Bus gate offences decreased at Nelson Mandela Place By Kaitlin McManus
SCULPTOR: Robert Coia
Snow leopard spotted in Glasgow Park THE latest in a series of sculptures commissioned to celebrate the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will be unveiled on Monday, 20 October in Springburn Park. The new feature - a giant Snow Leopard – was skilfully hand-carved by Glasgow sculptor Robert Coia as part of the council’s legacy initiative that centres on twinning schools and parks in the city with countries and regions of the Commonwealth. The sculpture marks Springburn Park’s twinning with Asia and has been placed in the grounds of the
peace garden. It is twice the size of a real one and is depicted crouching on a steep rock. Native to the high mountains of Central Asia, the snow leopard is a rare sight, with an estimated 6,000 left in the wild. Due to illegal hunting and habitat loss the numbers are declining. They are known for their beautiful, thick coats and long tails and pupils from Balornock Primary have been finding out about the country, its habitat and how these relate to protected wildlife native to Scotland.

The number of drivers busted for illegally driving through the Nelson Mandela Place bus gate has fallen by almost 77% in its first three months, it has been revealed. Launched on 5 July this year, there were 4,860 penalty charge notices in its first week, a daily average of 694. However, this number has been reduced dramatically from 1,171 in the week beginning 27 September, with a daily average of only 167.
There has been an improvement in bus journey times and reliability through Nelson Mandela Place and George Square, due to the introduction of the bus gate, it’s been said. The bus gate is open from 7am-7pm seven days a week which has led to a drop in congestion and a reduction in harmful traffic emissions which has improved the environment for pedestrians. Councillor Alistair executive member for
Watson, land &
Environmental Services, Glasgow City Council, said: “It is reassuring to see a massive drop - almost 77% in the number of offences detected in the first three months and it is hoped this trend will continue. “It is encouraging that drivers are modifying their behaviour and planning alternate routes. It is important we work to ensure public transport services are given priority and this is respected by the majority of drivers.”
15 year-old girl raped walking home in Cumbernauld By Fiona McNicol
A YOUNG girl has been raping whilst walking home in Cumbernauld. Police said the 15-year-old was walking on Beechwood Road, shortly before midnight on Saturday, when she was approached by two men. After a short time, one of the men left. The other man then subjected the girl to a serious sexual assault. She made her way home and police were called. CCTV footage is being examined and door-to-door inquires are taking place. The suspect was described as being white, in his mid to late teens, possibly with blonde hair which was spiky at the front, and wearing a black hooded top. He did not have a
Glaswegian accent but was Scottish. The man who was with the suspect was also white and in his mid to late teens. He was wearing a dark coloured beanie style hat and dark coloured T-shirt. A forensic search of the area has been carried out and officers are still reviewing CCTV images as part of their inquiries. Det Insp Kevin Jamieson, who is heading the investigation, said: “A young woman has been left traumatised by this attack and extensive inquiries have been carried out. “We are still in the process of reviewing CCTV images and conducting door-to-door inquiries.
“I am very keen to trace the man who was with the suspect before the attack. I know he may be unaware as to what happened after he left, but I believe he will be able to provide important information which could enable officers to trace the suspect. I would urge him to come forward. “I would also ask anyone who was in the area of Beechwood Road, Cumbernauld, late on Saturday evening and perhaps remembers seeing the girl or the two men walking on that stretch of road to contact police.” Anyone with information is asked to call Coatbridge Police Office on the non-emergency number 101 or alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.

Glasgow nightclub in Hoax bomb threat
A MAN who called 999 to claim a bomb would go off at a Glasgow nightclub has avoided jail. Scott Peden, 40, called the emergency number claiming there was an explosive in The Corinthian on Ingram Street, on 29th of December last year. The hoax call caused emergency services to visit the city centre hotspot and search the premises, where no bomb or explosive was found during a search of the building. Peden, from Govanhill, Glasgow, pleaded guilty at the city’s sheriff court to giving information that a bomb was in the building. Sheriff Johanna Johnston QC handed Peden a community payback order with the condition he must carry out 140 hours unpaid work within six months. The court heard Peden had been in the bar earlier in the evening for a Christmas night out.

City residents turn homes into research labs
Crown asks for wife killer prison term to be extended A KILLER husband jailed for murdering his estranged wife should face a longer prison term, say Crown Office lawyers.
She had gone to the matrimonial home in Barrachnie Crescent, Baillieston, Glasgow, the following evening to pick up their son.
Tony Vita, 48, was jailed for life and ordered to serve 12 years before he is eligible for parole after a knife attack on his wife Marion.
A neighbour heard female screams and a woman saying: “No, don’t.” Mrs Vita was found stabbed to death with four knife wounds. The fatal injury was to her back which cut into the aorta and led to haemorrhaging.
On the day before the murder on September 20 last year Vita had discovered that his estranged wife was in a sexual relationship with another woman.
The Crown have now launched a legal appeal to have the minimum prison term imposed on Vita, known
as a punishment part, increased. Vita had claimed at his earlier trial that his wife’s death must have been caused by an accident during a struggle for the knife. The jury rejected that and convicted him of murder. Mr Fairley said the jury had also rejected the question of marital infidelity provocation. The appeal judges reserved their decision in the case and will give a ruling at a later date.

EAST End residents are turning their homes into research labs to help others cut their energy bills.
to show which insulation provides the biggest improvements in energy efficiency and living conditions.
Residents of the ‘steel estate’ in Sandyhills have had small sensors fitted in their homes to measure the benefits of different types of insulation in hard to heat homes.
Retired plasterer, George Cameron, was one of the first volunteers to take part in the study. The 66-year-old is “happy to help” the cause, he said: “Taking part in the study is painless. The sensors are small and don’t make any noise. It took about 15 minutes to fit them and I can’t even see the one in my kitchen as it’s high up above the cupboards”
Shettleston Housing Association has teamed up with Future City Glasgow and Strathclyde University to carry out the study which aims to identify the most effective ways to cut heating bills for people in older, poorly insulated properties. Now Future City Glasgow has fitted small sensors in the homes of tenants and owners on the steel estate to measure humidity and temperature indoors and compare it with conditions outdoors. Some of the test properties have been fitted with external insulation but others have not had the work carried out. Data collected by the sensors is being analysed by researchers at Strathclyde University. The information gathered will be used
Chris Cunningham, Director of Shettleston HA, said: “We are very pleased to be involved in this research... The study will serve to bring home to all parties the need to ensure that funding, from whatever source, is available.” The team will go on to work with other housing associations including GHA to monitor the benefits of different types of insulation in properties of different construction.

Super-fast broadband for Glasgow homes By Kaitlin McManus
MORE than 40,000 homes in Glasgow are to be given a highspeed boost as the latest phase of a £410million scheme is rolled out.
East End veteran facility opens A HOUSING development for military veterans has opened in Glasgow’s East End. The £6.7m Bellrock Close development, a new 51-flat complex in Cranhill, was officially opened by the The Duke of Gloucester this week.
The Superfast Broadband programme by BT will give thousands of homes and businesses across Glasgow and the West of Scotland access to faster internet.
The facility, run by the charity Scottish Veteran Residences (SVR), aims to help struggling veterans with the transition to civilian life.
The new system will mean that multiple users in a home or business will be able to access the internet and download and share large files at the same time and more quickly than ever before.
In 2012/2013, official figures showed that 1080 ex-service people across Scotland made homeless applications. The applications were made to local authorities. 800 of them were assessed as priority homeless.
Many areas in Glasgow have been targeted in the latest phase of improvements, including Bridgeton, Langside and Springburn.
The housing development provides training, education, employment and recreation facilities for vulnerable veterans, many of whom are young men who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Govan, Bishopbriggs, and Croftfoot will also receive access to the technology for the first time.
The facility includes 21 affordable rental homes which are exclusively available to ex-armed forces members and their families.
Users ho sign up to the service should expect to receive broadband speeds of up to 80Mb per second from spring 2015.

Slipknot set to return to Glasgow GLASGOW’S West End is set for a shock after it was announced this week that Grammy-Award-winning heavy metal band Slipknot are set to make a long awaited return to UK arenas, and The SSE Hyrdo is firmly in their sights.
The masked Nu Metal juggernaut will arrive in Glasgow next January for their aptly named ‘Prepare For Hell’ tour. Slipknot frontman, Corey Taylor, said: “The UK has always been very special for us. In a lot of ways, it’s where this insanity began. So, for
this tour, we decided to try and hit as many places as we could - not only England, but Scotland and Wales as well. Technically Ireland is Europe, but we’re going there too. We’re coming back for the people who started this for us: that would be YOU. Prepare yourselves... Hell is coming.”
This will be the band’s first time playing the arena, and their first Scottish date since they dominated the SECC back in 2008. Ageing Nu Metal veterans Korn have also been announced as as special guests for the tour, with an opening support act yet to be revealed.
The tour will be in support of

Woman deliberately injured in hit and run incident POLICE are appealing for information after a woman was the victim of a deliberate hit and run attack in the city’s Springburn area.
HIT AND RUN: The woman was taken to Glasgow’s Royal Infirmary
The 36-year-old woman was crossing Broomfield Road this week when she stepped into the path of a dark car. An argument then took place between the driver and the woman.
Man accused of murdering Stephen McGinlay appears in court By Ross Swanson
The vehicle then sped off, turned around and deliberately drove towards the woman, injuring her as a result. The woman was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where she left following minor treatment. The vehicle left the area in an unknown direction. The car is described as a silver or grey Mercedes. The driver is described as an Asian man, aged 20 to 30 with short dark hair shaven at the sides and longer on the top.
“This was a traumatic incident for the woman involved and she was incredibly lucky not to have been more seriously injured.”
Detective Sergeant Ross Jamieson at Shettleston Police Office stated:
“Police enquiries are continuing. We are analysing CCTV and conducting

Nicola Sturgeon confirmed as new SNP leader NICOLA Sturgeon been confirmed at the new-leader-in-waiting for the Scottish National Party. Ms Sturgeon will formally replace the departing Alex Salmond as both party leader, and as First Minister of Scotland, at the SNP autumn conference next month. The SNP announced that the 44-yearold MSP was the only candidate to be the party’s new leader after nominations closed earlier this week.
NEW LEADER: Nicola Sturgeon is now the leader-in-waiting for the SNP Party
The announcement will come as no surprise to many who had believed the job to be hers for the taking after Alex Salmond’s endorsement during his resignation speech. Ms Sturgeon said: “It is a privilege to
have been chosen by the SNP to succeed Alex Salmond as Party Leader. Alex is a hard act to follow but I am determined to lead the SNP - and the country - from strength to strength.
“The SNP was re-elected in 2011 on the basis of our record as a good government. My job will to be to build on that record and deliver strong, competent government with job creation, fairness and the protection of high quality public services at its heart. If elected by Parliament to be the next First Minister, that will be my priority each and every day that I hold office. “I will also work to ensure that the Scottish Parliament gets the extensive new powers that Scotland was promised before the referendum. I will always make the case for Scotland to be an independent
country, but with the Westminster parties already backsliding on the delivery of new powers, my immediate job will be to hold them firmly to account - and I am today putting them on notice that I intend to do just that.” The soon-to-be SNP leader also said that she believed that Scottish independence was still achievable in her lifetime and it’s still a major goal of the party going forward. She added: “The hope, excitement and sense of opportunity of the referendum campaign did not end on polling day. It is alive, well and growing. This is a great time for Scotland and I look forward to leading my party and our country to even better times ahead.”

Kieran Sharp, Director General of the Federation Against Copyright Theft, said: “This seizure demonstrates the success of partnership working.

Copies of current cinema releases not yet available on DVD, like The Equalizer and Guardians of the Galaxy, were amongst those discovered by Police.

Firefighters searched the four-storey tenement after bringing the blaze under control. A man and woman taken to hospital after being saved. The fire began in a bedroom and the incident is thought to have been accidental.
Two men, aged 19 and 40 and a woman, aged 29 were arrested in connection with the raid. They were later released but are due to appear in court at a later date.
Firefighters also visited other nearby properties to ensure the safety of residents in the surrounding area. One woman reported having a cough after breathing in a small amount of smoke carried in the wind, but an ambulance crew determined she did not seek further medical attention.

Alasdair Gray ‘Life’s Work’ Retrospective opens at the Kelvingrove By Kaitlin McManus
KELVINGROVE Art Gallery and Museum is hosting a major ‘life’s work’ retrospective dedicated to the Scottish artist, Alasdair Gray. More than 100 paintings spanning Alasdair Gray’s full career, from his student days at The Glasgow School of Art to the present day, went on display from Saturday until February next year. Alasdair Gray: From the Personal to the Universal brings together many of his most famous works for the first time. On show together will be some of his most definitive and best-loved works, including paintings from his private estate and loans from public and private collections around the world. This exhibition is central element of the Alasdair Gray Season 2014 – 2015, staged in his home city in celebration of his 80th birthday in December. The
Season, focusing on the artist’s visual work, includes further exhibitions at GoMA, The Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow Print Studio and Taigh Chearsabhagh on the Isle of Uist, together with a programme of talks and events. As part of the exhibition, the artist will also unveil in early 2015 a major new commission of Saint Mungo, the patron Saint of Glasgow, which will then be displayed in St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art, Glasgow. Alasdair Gray said: “In 1945 my mum took me by tram to Kelvingrove, she had read in the paper that Miss Jean Irwin held an art class on Saturday mornings. Children in it were supposed to be recommended by teachers, but my mum was an independent woman. Mum showed my scribbles to Miss Irwin, who let me join her class. For the next five years Saturday mornings were my happiest times.
I have no words to describe the delight I felt at the wonders I witnessed in Kelvingrove. Now my work is on display here, I’m touched, it seems right given my passion for painting was cultivated at Kelvingrove. In truth I didn’t expect to have this exhibition before I died” Councillor Archie Graham, Chair
of Glasgow Life, described it as an “honour” to be hosting the exhibition at Kelvingrove. He said: “Alasdair Gray’s artistic and literary talents have made him one of Scotland’s most revered artists and it is absolutely right that his home city pays tribute to his outstanding talent as he approaches his 80th birthday.”
Alasdair Gray: From the Personal to the Universal opens at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum on Saturday 11 October 2014 and runs until Sunday 22 February 2015 Ticket (£5 / £3 concessions, £5.50/ £3.30 with Gift Aid) are on sale now and can be bought via www.glasgowlife.org.uk/museums

Scottish hospital under fire after inspection found “poor” cleanliness URGENT improvements have been demanded by hospital inspectors after beds were contaminated and lamps were found with blood on them, a report reveals. The report from the Healthcare Environment Inspectorate (HEI) said that improvements were needed at St John’s Hospital in Livingston, West Lothian and HEI Chief Inspector Susan Brimelow said the standard of cleanliness of equipment in A&E was “poor”. A team of inspectors visited the hospital in August. The report found that six patient trolley beds were contaminated with body fluids, five mattress covers were damaged and there was staining on
two of five mattresses. It also found blood in two of three overhead lamps in the resuscitation room of the accident and emergency department, with all three lamps having dust contamination. There was also blood contamination found on walls and under surfaces of worktops and on the sharps bins stored under the worktops, it was reported. Inspectors returned to St John’s a few days later and on their return visit, they said: “We were assured that significant progress had been made to address the issues identified the previous week. Ms Brimelow said: “We re-visited the accident and emergency department on 27 August and found the standard of patient equipment cleanliness had significant improved.”

GOOD MOVE OR TOO FAR? A smoking ban for public places, such as Trafalgar Square, is being proposed
Smoking ban for Trafalgar Square proposed By Kaitlin McManus
SMOKING could be banned in Trafalgar Square if a report is put in place, it was announced this week. The report called “Better Health for London”, also includes Parliament squares and London parks in the proposed ban.
CELLAR SLAVE: The victim was found in the Ashar’s cellar in 2009
The report, has been put together by Lord Ara Darzi, the former health minister and cancer surgeon. It’s said that the London Mayor Boris Johnson asked for Darzi to come up with a way to improve the health of those living in London.
A MILLIONAIRE couple who kept a girl from Pakistan as a slave in their Salford home have been ordered to pay her £100,000 in compensation, it’s been revealed. Ilyas and Tallat Ashar were jailed in October last year after the girl, who is deaf, was found in their cellar in 2009. The woman, now in her 20’s, was repeatedly raped and forced to work at the family’s many properties. Manchester Crown Court has ordered the couple to pay back more than £40,000 of benefits falsely claimed in her name.
It is believed to be the first time the Proceeds of Crime Act has been used in a case of modern slavery. The victim, who cannot be named, is believed to have been as young as 10 when she was trafficked into the UK. She was found sleeping in a cot bed in the Ashars’ cellar by trading standards staff, who were investigating allegations of money laundering. Officers then moved her to a place of safety. She is now living independently and has improved her sign language skills, according to police.

It has been revealed that around 1.2
million Londoners smoke, with 67 school children taking up the habit every day. In the report Darzi writes: “Just as smokers’ lungs are polluted, the lungs of our city – our parks and green spaces – are polluted by smoking. “A smoke free London will be better for us all; a better example for children; fewer opportunities for smokers to smoke; less litter; greener and more pleasant places for us to come together for better health.” He uses Hong Kong as an example which London could follow, “Hong Kong has now made all public places
smoke free – including beaches, restaurants, open air transport spaces, cafes and public parks. This has been backed by a £115 fine and has seen a 7% reduction in male smoking between 2002 and 2012.” Local councils could pass similar bylaws for their parks and open spaces. The report’s recommendations also include: Traffic light labelling on menus at restaurant chains, planning guidance to prevent new junk food outlets opening nearby of schools and a minimum 50p per unit price for alcohol in areas affected by problem drinking. For more information on the report, go to www.londonhealthcommission.org.uk

Race to track passengers on plane with Ebola nurse OFFICIALS have been trying to track down the 132 passengers who shared a flight with the second nurse to be diagnosed with Ebola.
SEARCHING FOR PASSENGERS: Officials are now trying to track over 100 passengers who were on the plane with Ms Vinson which landed at Dallas Fort Worth Airport
Amber Vinson, 29, was on board Frontier Airlines flight 1143 from Cleveland, Ohio, to Dallas-Fort Worth on 13 October, a day before she fell ill. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it was working to make contact with all 132 passengers on board the flight. The plane’s crew said Miss Vinson did not exhibit any symptoms of Ebola during the flight on Monday. Dr Tom Frieden, the director of the CDC, said that Miss Vinson should not have been allowed to travel by plane, but added that “the level of risk to people around her would be extremely low”. The nurse was put in isolation at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas within 90 minutes of developing a fever on Tuesday. Infected Ebola patients are not considered contagious until they have symptoms, according to health officials. Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said he is not aware of any current cases of Ebola in the city. Meanwhile, officials are preparing to transfer Miss Vinson to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, where two Americans who contracted Ebola while working
in West Africa were successfully treated and released. Miss Vinson is the second health worker to contract Ebola in the US after treating Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian national who succumbed to the virus on 8 October. Nina Pham, a 26-year-old nurse at Texas Health Presbyterian, remains in isolation at the hospital, and is said to be in stable condition after receiving a plasma transfusion donated by Ebola survivor Dr Kent Brantly. The nurses’ cases have raised concerns over the care procedures and the effectiveness of the protective gear used by medical staff at the Dallas hospital. A nursing union has claimed that health workers treating Mr Duncan had to use medical tape to secure openings in their protective outfits. Dr Frieden initially said a “breach of protocol” was to blame for Miss Pham’s diagnosis, but health officials have not specifically said what led to either her or Miss Vinson contracting the virus.
The situation prompted President Barack Obama to postpone planned political stops in New Jersey and Connecticut on Wednesday. Instead, the White House said the president will convene a high-level meeting about the Ebola outbreak. On Tuesday, Mr Obama reiterated that an Ebola epidemic in the US was “highly unlikely”, but added that even one case “is too many, and we’ve got to keep on doing everything we can”. The news that Miss Vinson took a flight just before being diagnosed with Ebola raised fears as far away as Wall Street, where shares of the biggest US airlines plummeted between 4% and 6% in afternoon trading. Nearly 4,500 deaths, mostly in West Africa, have been reported during what health officials have called the worst Ebola outbreak in history.

WEIRD OF THE WEEK
US man arrested for aggressive mopping A MAN was arrested this week for snatching a cleaner’s mop and “aggressively mopping” a hotel floor, after becoming frustrated at the housekeeper’s poor efforts.
The furious cleaning spree took place in Bristol, Connecticut, US (where else would this happen?) in what I’ll wager is one of the barmiest situations you’ll ever hear about. Irate John Thornton grabbed the mop from the startled employee he deemed unfit for the job, and attempted to show him how it was meant to be done. Apparently a perfectionist, Thornton made extra effort to clean the confused worker too.
Police arrived and arrested Thornton before he was able to finish or place regulation ‘wet floor’ signs around the hotel’s lobby. A baffled police spokesman, Lt Donn Watson said: “[Thornton] then began to mop the floor but became more aggressive and mopped over the employee’s shoes several times,” “He then turned his back to the employee and forcibly backed into her pushing her into a corner.” The cleaner, who was left “shaken” by the mopping attack, intends to press charges. Thornton was charged with breach of peace, and upon making further
threats against the police was also given ‘threatening in the second degree’ to add to his woes. He was released after paying a $20,000 bail but is due to appear in court on October 27. Perhaps the funniest part of this whole story is that ‘quality’ newspaper The Independent have failed – somehow – to notice that this entire story took place in America, and not its namesake county in South West England. I’m honestly not sure who comes off worst here, Angry John or The Independent’s editorial team. Maybe John can show them how to do their jobs too.

Mass grave bodies in Mexico are not students THE bodies of 28 people found in a set of mass graves are not those of students who went missing last month, Mexican authorities have said. The graves were unearthed outside the town of Iguala in the southern state of Guerrero. At a news conference, Mexico’s Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam said: “I can tell you that in the first mass graves we found, for the very first ones we already have results, and I can confirm that there are no matches to the DNA that the families of the missing people gave us.” Experts are still testing remains recovered from other mass burial sites found near the city but no further information has been revealed. The 43 student teachers disappeared after a confrontation with police, who are suspected of being involved in their disappearance.
Local authorities say the police were working with a local drug gang. Benjamin Mondragon, or “Benjamon” the alleged leader of the drug gang, Guerreros Unidos, killed himself during a gunfight with Mexican security forces on Tuesday, the head of national security revealed. “We hoped to make this person, Benjamin Mondragon, surrender. But he showed up, said something aloud and shot himself in the head,” Monte Alejandro Rubido told reporters. Meanwhile, 14 more people have been arrested in connection with the disappearance of the students. The disappearance of the students has caused outcry, with parents and relatives holding protests on the streets demanding the authorities do more to find their loved ones.

Hong Kong vows to probe alleged police beating at protest AUTHORITIES in Hong Kong have vowed to conduct an impartial investigation into a video which appears to show several plainclothes police officers beating up a detained pro-democracy demonstrator. The widely circulated video shows officers carrying the man to a dark corner, where he’s laid on the ground and repeatedly kicked and punched while others stand around, apparently keeping watch. “Police express concern over the video clip showing several plainclothes officers who are suspected of using excessive
force,” said a statement issued by the Hong Kong Information Services Department Wednesday morning. “The Complaints Against Police Office has already received a relevant complaint and will handle it in accordance with the established procedures in a just and impartial manner.” The victim has been identified as Ken Tsang, a member of the Civic Party, who’s also a social worker and a member of the 1,200 member election committee that chooses Hong Kong’s leader.

Silicon Valley’s biggest companies offer to freeze employees eggs IT’S come to light this week that Facebook and Apple are giving female staff the opportunity to delay starting a family - by paying for them to freeze their eggs. The initiative is part of the so-called “perks arms race” as Silicon Valley firms battle to recruit top talent and it is hoped the perk will attract more women into a traditionally
male-dominated sector.
Other benefits offered by companies to keep workers happy include free lunches, dry cleaning, yoga and massages. Facebook was first to propose the perk and Apple will begin offering it in January, NBC said. The firms are offering up to $20,000 (£12,600) to cover procedure and storage costs.

The Dream Maker Man
Les Hoey has been making children’s dreams a reality for over 20 years; from meeting the Pope to being on-stage with Katy Perry. Here, Glasgow City News reporter, Ross Swanson, finds out what started Glasgow’s most charitable man on his mission. IT’S not often that you’ll hear a story of someone so selfless that it really stops you in your tracks and makes you think that maybe you could be doing more to help others in need. ‘Mr Fix it’ - Les Hoey - is one of these rare exceptions. Railworker Les has spent over 20 years tirelessly making sick kid’s dreams come true. From Simon Cowell to Mike Tyson, he has made it possible for kids all over Scotland to meet their idols. The 53-year-old Wishaw man began his now famous fund-raising vocation after his daughter was diagnosed with Leukaemia 22 years ago. Initially, he was raising money for Yorkhill Children’s Hospital where his daughter was being treated, but at the suggestion of the ward’s nurses, he began a fund drive for other charities too. “And that was it, that’s how it all started,” says Les, quite simply. However, fund-raising was apparently not enough for the affable chap, as he searched for a way to personally lift his daughter’s spirits, hoping it might have a positive effect on her recovery. In 1992 an upcoming concert gave him an idea. “When my daughter was ill she never asked for anything. Never,” says Les, “But Boyzone were coming to Glasgow and I knew she loved them.” Les explains that he wanted to make his daughter’s dream of meeting her (then) favourite band come true. He contacted various members of the press, trying to find someone who could help make this happen, but he says no one was able - or willing - to do so. Not to be defeated so easily, he picked up the phone and did it himself. “I just made three phone calls,” Les says matterof-factly, “and I managed to get a hold of their tour manager. He told me to bring my daughter and her friends in, and that was that.”
The generous fundraiser explains that the effect the boyband meeting had on his daughter led him on the charitable course he currently leads today. “I saw a difference in her that day, I saw how happy she was. I decided to do something which would make it the same for other kids.” He began his search of finding children, who like his daughter, were also seriously ill and could benefit from the same treat. “Every time Boyzone came to Glasgow I got kids to meet them. Then I started to get more and more people joining in.” Les’s daughter recovered from her illness long ago, but still visits the kids at the annual Christmas party her dad hosts. Children with life threatening illnesses from all over Scotland travel to Glasgow every single week to be a part of the arranged events. Be it popstar, sporting legend - or something in between – if the kids want to meet them, chances are Les can have it arranged.
“You name them, I’ve had them. I had a wee boy meeting the Pope one time”

FAMOUS FACES: From Cheryl Cole to Scott Brown and Kylie Minogue, Les makes it possible for kids to meet their favourite celebrities and idols.
His ability to bring big-name talents to help in his cause would have most would-be celebrity agents envious of his skills. As he points out: “If they’re playing in Glasgow, I’ll get them. “It’s gotten a lot easier over the years of course. You name them, I’ve had them. I had a wee boy meeting the Pope one time,” he says decidedly casually. Indeed, Les’ s list of celebrity encounters reads like a ‘who’s who’ of A-list luminaries. He’s brought kids to meet Kylie Minogue, taken them on-stage with Katy Perry – twice, and arranged a game of table tennis with Snow Patrol. These are just a few examples of what has become an almost daily job for him. Just this past week, his efforts allowed for a young cancer sufferer to play football with a training Scotland national team, ahead of their crucial Euro 2016 qualifier win over Georgia at Ibrox. 10-year-old Stevie Jo Kirkpatrick, from Dumfries, impressed captain Scott Brown during their session. “I think Stevie Jo should be picked for Scotland,” Les said with a smile. Les was awarded an MBE last year in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for his dedicated work in helping bring smiles to the faces of many children over the past two decades. No chance of
that giving him a big head though, as the humble Scotrail employee is startlingly shy for someone who has clearly had to bypass a lot of figurative ‘red tape’ during his work getting in contact with some of the most famous people in the world. Indeed, whilst Les seems happy to chat about his work, the focus of the conversation must be on the kids themselves, rather than his part in the process. The Les Hoey MBE DreamMaker Foundation charity was officially launched last month, allowing others to help in raising funds for the kids. The new organisation hopes to have various volunteers all joining together under one banner. Clearly not one for resting, Les explains he’s always looking towards the next big event. “Lee Evans is coming to Glasgow at the weekend,” he says referring to the comic’s ‘Monsters’ tour hitting the Glasgow’s SSE Hydro for a two night stint, “so I’m trying to get something organised right now.” Well, I’d better leave him to it. Les’smassive annual Christmas party takes place this December at Motherwell Football Club. If you would like to donate to the Les Hoey MBE DreamMaker Foundation or enquire about helping out, contact Angela on 01555 752798 or by email at fundraising@ leshoeymbedreammakerfoundation.org

If heading out for Halloween isn’t your thing, host
Serve up some seriously spooky dishes YOU don’t have to be Nigella in the kitchen to host a dinner party, and Halloween is an excellent time to try out some new and more unique recipes. If you’ve been carving pumpkins, you’ll have plenty of pumpkin filling to make all sorts of delicious meals – from soup to pies and pasta. Our favourite is this Martha Stewart, easy-to-make, HeirloomSquash and Pumpkin Pie, which you can find full recipe details for at www.marthastewart.com. For those wanting to serve nibbles, let your imagination run wild! How about some Garlic ‘Eyeballs’ with creamy chive dip (garlic mushrooms with an olive for a pupil) or a batch of ghoul-shaped cookies topped with ghostly peppermint-icing? The kids will love these and are a great way to get them involved with preparation for a party or dinner.
Get your home looking tastefully terrifying GROWN up Halloween doesn’t need to be tacky. There are plenty of ways to decorate your home looking suitably creepy and stylish at the same time. Pumpkins are a cheap and creative way to add a spooky touch – try and avoid the standard scary carved face and go for something a little more imaginative. Using inspiration from your favourite horror flick is always a
good idea to get the creative juices flowing (as long as it’s not Scary Movie) and you could continue with this theme throughout the house or party. Fairylights (Asda do some creepy-but-cute bat ones for under £5) and draped strips of material are another way to get a Halloween look on a budget, and a lined-up pillar candles (the more wax-dripping, the better) are always a great, inexpensive way to achieve a gothic look.

DESIGNER: Kevin of Kevin Lynch Designs
Kevin Lynch,
Kevin Lynch Designs
Each week we focus on a Glasgow business, organisation or professional, and quiz them on their success, future plans and favourite things about the city… Q. What is Kevin Lynch Designs? Kevin Lynch Designs was started by myself, Kevin Lynch, over 10 years ago. From an early age, I always had a keen eye for drawing and being creative, and over the years I progressed and graduated in the field of Graphic Design. My role in the business is like a modern day “Del boy” or “Jack of all Trades”. I meet and greet the customers, listen to their design needs, and then source the materials needed with my overseas suppliers. I then create bespoke designs for the client whilst ensuring everything runs smoothly. I work closely with the customer from start to finish on the project.
Q. How did Kevin Lynch Designs begin? The idea for the business began after I completed studying Graphic Design, and my sister was getting married. After going to the Scottish Wedding Show, I realised that I could apply my skills and designs to the wedding industry. I approached my local Business Gateway in search of more information and advice, where I was given a start-up grant of £1000 and provided with the necessary training courses. Although the company was started through mainly personal funding, I felt the information I received at Business Gateway was crucial to the business getting off the ground.
Q. What was the most difficult aspect of setting up your own company? The most difficult part of setting up your own company is managing your time. Most of the working people today find it hard to maintain a healthy balance of work, family and a social life. However, when working for yourself you must be disciplined, dedicated and very organised. Juggling between client meetings, overseeing print runs and dealing with overseas suppliers can take up more than full time hours. So learning to manage all that while keeping a cool head and not get snowed under was the hardest part for me.
Q. What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting their own business? I feel the most important thing for anyone starting their own business is to know your market and research it, then research it some more as you can never know enough about who your selling to and what you can offer each person. Jumping in head first into the unknown is scary but going head first into business without being properly prepared or organised is even worse.
Q. What’s been the biggest achievement/highlight for Kevin Lynch Designs so far? We have been fortunate enough to have been nominated for, and received, both design and business awards. We have worked with brides reaching across the globe to the USA and Australia, which we feel is rather incredible as we are a small Scottish based business. In our time we have produced designer wedding stationery for some wellknown faces, including footballers and musicians. However, our biggest highlight when we worked closely with a wedding planner who was organising a wedding for royalty overseas and we were fortunate enough to have produced theirs stationery.
Q. What’s next for Kevin Lynch Designs? We always have our eye on the ball for design and are constantly changing our creative ideas producing new unique wedding stationery. We have recently expanded our company to include chair cover and candelabra hire for weddings, where we can offer this as a package to our customers. The future plan is to get involved in the bridal dress retail market; I would love to have a bridal boutique where we can showcase designer dresses along with our stationery.
Five second Guide to Glasgow with... Kevin Lynch Designs
Best place for stylish shopping: Princes Square - where you can shop and get a cocktail at the same time! I feel most inspired when: I am around creative people. I love going to art exhibitions and galleries in Glasgow, which both enlightens and inspires me. I can usually be found sipping a: Vodka Martini (shaken not stirred) at the Blue Dog or Rogano. The best bargains can be found: All over the city, but I usually head to the West End’s second hand shops - these are a great place to score some designer brands or accessories. Favourite place to eat and be social is: The Grill on the Corner, it’s the best steakhouse in the city.

TheSoul Path of Marilyn Monroe
The circumstances under which Marilyn Monroe passed away over fifty years ago are shrouded in mystery yet she remains an icon of the era in which she lived. Marilyn Monroe was her stage name and her birth name was Norma Jeane Mortenson. She had a limiting belief that she was not born to be happy and at 28 years of age she is quoted to have said “I was never used to being happy, so that wasn’t something I ever took for granted. You see, I was brought up differently from the average American child because the average child is brought up expecting to be happy”

20 Glasgow City News • 17th October - 23rd October 2014 What are the forces that create these negative experiences? The truth is it is all predetermined by your soul so that we grow spiritually and expand our consciousness while on earth. By applying the accurate system of Soul Path Analysis to a name we can decode the energies present within that manifest all of our life’s experiences. In this article I present a taste of some of Marilyn’s energies that manifested the tragic life she lived.
resulted in her feeling somewhat overly sensitive and ungrounded, by not having a stable home life, relationships or jobs. Indeed Norma Jeane did experience this energy a lot as a child having spent many years in twelve foster homes, not having a stable family and even being sent to an orphanage in Los Angeles. Another manifestation of this energy is that she was more in her head than in her body which is indicative of a
holding on to past emotional clutter and not fitting in. Norma Jeane didn’t think that she was beautiful, a point of view she retained even when she was celebrated as the most beautiful woman in the world. Indeed, the years between the age of nine and twelve had been unhappy ones because she reached adult height of 5ft 6in, making her much taller than her peers and so seeing herself as odd. This demonstrates this aspect of this energy expressed as her feeling out of place. The lack of stability as an aspect of the 8s manifested in Norma Jeane (Marilyn) having three marriages ending in divorce and several affairs. This energetic vibration was clearly an on-going challenging programme in her life, so much so it may well have prevented her fully embracing the positive aspects of her talent energy as we shall see here.
In our birth name, the first name we were ever known by, the challenges, talents and goals of our life are encoded. Norma Jeane had really did have a bumpy start in life is a true expression of what we call the ‘8-8’ energy that she had present as a challenge vibration or life lesson. This energy
soul finding it hard to be in physical human form and perhaps preferring or dream about being back at source or about an ideal relationship. She even fantasised about Clark Gable being her father and later on she married a man who she used to call ‘Daddy’. With this 8-8 challenge she would have been commitment averse and
Norma Jeane had the ‘12-3’ Worldly Talent energy and in essence this is expressed as someone who lives life to the full and on a grand scale! Often seen in people who are at the end of an incarnation cycle and so may feel that there is not enough time to do all they want in this life. With this energy as a talent she would have been keen to learn new experiences and expand what she had learned with a desire to share it to all. She had deep desire just to be loved and have stability however sadly this did not really happen despite her innate capacity to be a very mothering and positive person. She was one who saw beauty in all with a truly harmonic and romantic presence. The aspect of this energy to do everything on a big scale with no half measures was expressed in
Norma Jeane’s life as her later hyper-sexuality, sleep problems and drug abuse. Her disturbed personal relationships may have stemmed from the childhood sexual abuse that she suffered in the context of her difficult relationships with her mentally ill mother and subsequent foster families. In addition her addictive behaviour is a true aspect of this 12-3 energy, which was displayed in her life. One of her famous quotes reads “I’m selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best.” Her main life lesson as chosen by her soul was to be more grounded and less sensitive. She strove for stability to give her the grounding but alas this was never really to be. The worldly goal energy of Norma Jeane (i.e., 11-2) was to accept her intelligence and learn to assimilate ideas and see her truth. She would also develop an ability to deal with loss and develop her channeling ability. As she strove to access this goal she would have experienced depression coupled with the addictions. She once said
often being overconfident and scattered is a true expression of this energy. Sadly Norma Jeane died at age 36 and so she never got to express her Spiritual energies fully in this phase of the path her life was destined to take. In many ways she had so much to offer the earth and her legacy lives on through her many inspirational quotes. But most importantly Marilyn made her psychiatrist, Dr Marianne Kris, a beneficiary of her will, provided she used the money to help children. This estate continues to be used to benefit children with mental health issues. Although Marilyn’s life was cut short she remains in spirit as a strong guiding Angel, helping children who suffered psychological trauma as she did herself when young. “I am good, but not an angel. I do sin, but im not the devil. I am just a small girl in the big world trying to find someone to love.” Together with this energy she would have experienced extremes with blockages to her creative expression and feeling disconnected spiritually. Feeling persecuted coupled with a Messiah complex. Her manner of

The tarot is an ancient and powerful divination tool that has been used for centuries, its hard to pin point exactly where it originated but what we do know is that the rich and famous have consulted it to assist them in their life. Using the tarot the reader taps into it’s hidden mysteries and symbolic connections to provide the client with what lie ahead and from there they make their own choices and decisions. Each week I will be taking a look at one card from the deck and explaining what it means. Each week I will be taking a look at one card from the deck and explaining what it means.

The devil is a card that relates to many layers of complications in a person or a situation. It is about keeping yourself bound to old ways and habits that do not serve you well. Breaking out of the chains that bind you are the priorities and allowing yourself to fly in new directions are the opportunities that face you but what may hold you back is the fear element in this. Sometimes, people don’t want to give something up even if its not good for them because it’s the “ better the Devil you know scenario” so they continue in the same way when all they need to do it find a replacement for the negative areas allowing them to soar to new heights.
17th October - 23rd October 2014 • Glasgow City News 21 and mysterious connection between the Source of our individual lives, and the source of the life of the planet. Druidry recognises eight particular times during the yearly cycle, which are significant and which are marked by eight special festivals. Of these eight celebrations, they create a balanced scheme of interlocking masculine and feminine observances. The solar observances are the ones that most people associate with modern day Druids, particularly the Summer Solstice ceremonies. At the Solstices, the Sun is revered at the point of its apparent death at midwinter, and at its maximum power at the summer solstice, when the days are at their longest. At the Equinoxes, day and night are balanced. At the Spring Equinox, the power of the sun is on the increase, and we celebrate the time of sowing, and of the preparation for the gifts of summer. At the Autumn Equinox, although day and night are of equal duration, the power of the sun is on the wane, and we give thanks for the gifts of the harvest and prepare for the darkness of winter.
“ There is a little Druid Magic in all of us “ Have you ever wondered what Druidry was all about? Contrary to common misconception, they do not perform any form of ritual sacrifice, nor do they dance sky clad in the moonlight, although, the latter is optional. Basing itself on this deep and mysterious connection between the Source of our individual lives and the source of the life of the planet. Druidry recognises eight particular times during the yearly cycle which are significant, and which are marked by eight festivals. Druidry is the Celtic native spiritual tradition. The Awen is of the natural spirit from creation its self. It is symbolic to the Druids as three bars of: light, sparking inspiration and creativity, a resonation universal sound, in a sea of energy, that flows eternally through the fabric of earth, and beyond...... The ancient Celts followed their Druidry in many different ways, marking their sacred places by earthen banks, or a grove of trees planted or sourced for this purpose. The Dru-
id’s powerful priesthood worked with rituals, steeped in magic, and mysticism, and taught in a traditional and quasi-scientific language. This was to be banished by the power of the Romans, and finally destroyed by Christianity, to the point that it was lost in the realms of antiquity. The medieval interdicts of the Christian church on popular beliefs, and rituals, proved fatal to the Celtic Druids, their major festivals in the wheel of the year, were replaced by the ones that most of us practice through our Christian beliefs in this 21st Century, for example the winter solstice became Christmas, Spring Equinox became Easter etc. etc...... The Druid magic was however never lost, lying incarnate in ever part of nature, and in the ancient stories of the Celts. Stories of course often have to be summarised, but there shall be nothing in them, that did not come from the Druid Celtic mind, and does not exist today in some variety. Today Druids still Base their selfs on this deep
These four festivals are astronomical observances, and we can be sure our ancestors marked them with magic and ritual, because many of the stone circles are oriented to their points of sunrise or sunset. By the time the circles were built, our ancestors had become pastoral people, and times of sowing and reaping were most vital to them. But as well as these four astronomical, solar festivals, there exist four times in the year which were and are also considered sacred. These were the times which were more associated with the livestock cycle, rather than the farming cycle. Although these rituals are representing the earth and above. These eight festivals also are a representation of a Druids family life, Inter changing like the cycle of changing seasons. For instance, in the festival of spring it’s a time
of fertility, clearing out the negativity in your life, a time of reflection, and new beginnings. Autumn is the time of replenishing what you have sown and feeling good about what you have achieved in your life, however small these achievements may be, and above all, believing in the magic that lies deep within natures energies.. There is a little Druid magic in all of us, it is awaiting the inquisitive mind to enlighten this magic. Have you ever felt an overwhelming emotion, or contentment as you walk through a silent forest, or feel the energies of rushing waves on a pebbled shore, and felt drawn to collect special stones on a beach, have you ever placed you’re healing hand on your child’s skint knee to make them feel better, or have you ever just had a natural intuition that things do not feel right...... This could be the Druid magic within you. Druids today like their ancestors before feel these energies and mark these eight significant milestones in the year by celebrating these festivals. A little amount of study of the festivals will show how interwoven is the life of our psyche, that of our body, the planet, the sun and the moon. Each festival marks a potent conjunction of time and place, once held sacred in the hearts of our ancestors, and is still celebrated by the Druids of today. The importance of these festivals in relation to the wheel of the year, and the changing seasons of the year, are available to all who retain an open mind, and who are occasionally prepared to reply in their natural instincts. Technology should not replace, nor remove the human psyche, we must maintain our own time, and space, allowing us to maintain, and sustain the balance of nature, and Mother Earth. Let the Druid magic shine, and flow through us all, even more now that man has ventured to explore the stars and beyond. Why not look for the hidden magic within you. By Aria McNeill

The Romance Angels
Star Signs I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.
Joan Charles
Aries It may not be the time to jump in and shout about things so hang fire and let the dust set-tle before you do anything. You might have more in your
favour by not doing anything at all so think first before you make any moves.
Taurus Life sends us its fair share of challenges even when we don’t expect it however, with your determination you can over come anything and still come out smelling of roses in the end.
Gemini They say that two heads are better than one when trying to solve issues but you do like to do things on your own making it harder in the long run. Perhaps trying things in a differ-ent way will bring positive results.
Cancer The home is your domain and you like to keep on top of things and indeed changing them as well. It not only keeps you busy but it’s a wee
challenge that you set yourself — bal-ance is the key though so aim for this and you will have it all sorted.
Leo
Work could be an area that your thoughts are on just now and I’m sensing that once you get everything in its place in your own head then you can take it forward on a more prac-tical level.
Virgo When problems arise there is no point in running for cover, dealing with them in a proper and more structured way will actually make sense and show you that your more than ca-pable of addressing things yourself.
Libra Emotions could be swinging from high to low and then back again and it’s not at all how you like things to be. When you lose the control element it is important to get hold of the reins and pull them in.
Scorpio
Letting your hair down might just be what is called for just now as it feels as if things have been way too serious. Even though you like to shape things in your way it’s also good to take your foot off the gas at times too.
Sagittarius When in doubt, do nought: that’s a phrase that is full of great wisdom especially when you’re feeling out of your depth. Things happen when they are meant to and rushing them will only create more delays.
Capricorn
Paper work linked with work and the home may be in need of sorting and the sooner you do so the easier it will be on your mind. You may feel as if there are not enough hours in the day but you need to make time for things that need attention.
Aquarius Such an interesting time for you as, on one hand you’re feeling slightly out of balance with things while on the other you have a few great
opportunities coming to you — it’s knowing which ones to chose that is the issue.
Pisces In a career area I feel that you could be in two minds as to what steps to take next. It seems to be all-good however; you like to go through things with a fine tooth-comb just to make sure everything is as it should be.
As an Angel Therapist one of the biggest questions we tend to be asked is are there angels to help me find my soul mate or help me find romance in my life. The answer is YES there are angels called the romance angels whose main job is to help in every area of romance from finding that special someone to bringing more romance back into a relationship. In fact, there are many angels who can help you find romance. When you are looking to meet your soul mate along with working with the romance angels I would advise you to also call upon Archangel Chamuel as he is the angel for helping people find what they are looking for, he is an amazing angel for helping us with anything from finding the right job to finding the right partner. He is often seen as the angel for love as he can help guide you in finding the love that you are seeking. Just ask him to help you find the right partner for your highest and greatest good, but remember to be open to taking any guided actions the angels may guide you to take. Another wonderful Archangel to work with is Archangel Jophiel; this Divine angel can help you beautify your thoughts. As this is the angel of beauty she can also guide you to the best clothes and hairdo to help you with your confidence. This Divine angel can help you to see your own true beauty and
even help keep your thoughts about yourself to be more positive. Archangel Haniel; this amazing goddess angel can help you to see your gifts and talents and is a wonderful angel to ask to go with you on your first dates as she can help you be seen for your true beauty and can help you talk with self-assurance. Archangel Michael can also help you believe in yourself and help to boost your self-esteem and confidence, which in turn can help you attract the right person into your life. If you have had difficult relationships in the past I would also suggest calling in Archangel Michael and Archangel Raphael because there may be an esoteric cord still holding you to the past, along with any emotional pain from the previous relationship as well as any other issues. Archangel Michael carries a sword of light that lets him release any fears, anger or emotional pain that may be holding you back from finding the right partner. It’s so easy, just ask Michael to release you from this person and also to release any hurt that may be holding you back, take a deep breath in and imagine Michael going around you cutting away all the cords and issues to that person or persons.
Archangel Raphael is the healing angel ask him to surround you in a bubble of unconditional love and healing light and send love into all the cords that have been cut. I also like to ask him to send healing down the cords so that it helps to heal any issue you may have had with that person. You don’t want to carry that heavy emotional baggage of the past with you into a new relationship, which is where these awesome angels can help! All you have to do is be willing to let the past go and also be willing to heal any hurt and pain that you may be holding in your heart and soul. If you are in a relationship and have been having arguments and disagreements you can call on the romance angels and also Archangel Raguel who works to resolve any arguments and bring peace and harmony back into the relationship. So, whatever stage your relationship is at, whether you are looking for a partner or you already have a partner there are wonderful angels to help you, all you have to do is ask them. Wishing you all — billions of Angel Blessings. For more details contact Diane Etherson Angel Blessings Mob: 07968962395

the perfect Parka IT is a staple jacket everyone, male or female, should have in their wardrobe; a Parka. Now that autumn has arrived I went shopping to search for the perfect parka. After trailing through the shops with my poor granny and aunt who had to put up with my whining, “I don’t like the zips/shade of green/ pockets/ hood/ fur” I finally found The One. By Kaitlin McManus It all happened by accident, I had given up and wanted a nosy in Matalan at their home ware and left with a jacket! So now I am a Parka expert (kind of) I have selected parkas for all occasions, so you don’t have to put your granny/aunt/friend/ dog through the trouble I did. And if you’re feeling super generous (I wasn’t), there is even an option for the lucky man in your life. Happy shopping!

Live like a local in Montmartre TUCKED in between quirky clothing boutiques, pastel shaded cafes and second hand shops, just around the corner from Abbesses Metro Station and within a short walking distance of the Sacré-Cœur, a friend and I found ourselves at our home-away-fromhome for the weekend. Our Montmartre apartment was perfectly placed for our off-the-beaten-track weekend, and yet a short hop and a change on the Metro would bring you out right in the heart of central Paris, just moments from the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triumph and the Museem de Louvre. Five minutes from our apartment, we arrived at the bustling restaurant La Bascule. We squeezed ourselves into a table near the back of the restaurant and attempted to get to grips with the menu. In most of the restaurants, cafes and bistros that line the streets of Montmartre, you’ll be pushed to find English translations on the menu – which, as we found, can actually lead to you ordering wonderful food you might never have been brave enough to try. La Bascule’s offerings included their amazing Camembert, Calamari and delicious Frois Gras. After we finished our amazing threecourse meal (also highlight recommended

is the traditional dessert Pain Perdi – a bread pudding served with cream) we wandered the pretty pastel shaded Montmartre streets back to our apartment and collapsed on our comfy beds, feeling suitably full of great food and very good French wine. Bright and early the next morning, we went to meet Gabriela, our Montmartre tour guide for the day, from Tours by Locals. A local student and Montmartre resident, Gabriela promised to show us the side of Paris that most people miss. Gabriela led us through the winding streets past resident parks, artists’ studios (including one where Picasso once worked) historical landmarks and Montmartre’s only remaining vineyard. The tour also included some local shopping (the second hand clothing shops
On Saturday nights in Paris, you’ll mostly find couples out for late romantic meals in their favourite restaurants. One such popular spot, and our last restaurant for the weekend, was Le Grand 8, situated in the shadow of the Sacre-Coeur. With a delicious selection of local wines and dishes, Le Grande is definitely one of Montmartre’s hidden gems. I had the veal with mushroom risotto, and for dessert, a pot of what can only be described as caramel heaven. Feeling full and happy, we decided to take in the view of Paris at night from the top of the now deserted Sacre-Coeur –working off a few of the weekend’s calories on the walk to the top. Montmartre is perfect for experiencing all that Paris has to offer – great food, great wine, fantastic shopping and spectacular history, without having to put up with the hordes of tourists in the city centre. Renting an apartment here, rather than booking a hotel, makes it really easy to pretend to be a local - practise your French enough, and they may even mistake you for one of them.

Technology Round-up ‘Revenge Porn’ now illegal
Re: Windows 10
IN “I could have sworn that was already totally illegal” common sense news; a new law has come into effect that can see people who post nude pictures of their ex partner’s to “revenge porn” websites without their permission jailed for up to two years.
Justice Secretary Chris Grayling said: “The fact that there are individuals who are cruelly distributing intimate pictures of their former partners without their consent is almost beyond belief. “We want those who fall victim to this type of disgusting behaviour to know that we are on their side and will do everything we can to bring offenders to justice. “That is why we will change the law and make it absolutely clear to those who act in this way that they could face prison.”
The change in law comes just weeks after several high profile celebrities, including Jennifer Lawrence, had private nude pictures distributed across the web following an online hack.
Amazon retail store set to open
IN what surely must be seen by many as a completely regressive step,
IN a follow up to last week’s piece on Microsoft’s rather underwhelming Windows 10 announcement, the tech giants have revealed that over a million people are currently using the beta build.
online retail specialists Amazon have announced they are opening their own physical store in the US. The company, best known for being a high-street slayer, have traditionally been an alternative for Christmas shoppers who don’t wish to brave huge crowds or the cold weather. The shop, which will be set-up in a mall in the comparatively warmer San Francisco, seeks to dominate yet another corner of the retail market. Amazon unveiled news of the store this past week to much confusion online. The store is due to open on Wednesday 22 October and will be open throughout the festive period. As yet, no confirmation as to whether the shop will be permanent has been made. Any chance of eBay setting up a car boot sale then?
Microsoft Corporate Vice President of Operating Systems, Joe Belfiore, said that testers have so far been “a vocal bunch”. He continued: “It’s been awesome to see so many of you joining the Windows Insider Program and letting us know what you think about the Windows 10 Technical Preview software.” Whilst no solid statements are forthcoming regarding what the feedback from the “vocal bunch” are I’d be willing to bet a lot of it goes along the same lines of: “Isn’t this just Windows 7?”

Ross Swanson reviews: Superbuzzer Quiz Game I BUMPED into a friend in the pub on Friday night. I’d actually been sitting alone up until that point and, lacking anything decent to read after finishing my copy of Glasgow City News (what?) I was, in truth, quite bored. Luckily, my awesome mate Jen saved me when she dug out her phone and delivered ‘Superbuzzer Quiz Game’ into my life. Essentially Superbuzzer is an online pub quiz, pitting you against five other random people from all over the world (well, mostly UK with the odd German thrown in) in real time. The format is quite simple; questions from various categories pop-up and the quickest person to ‘buzz in’ gets the most points – you know...a quiz.
There are three knock-out stages per game, with the final round being a one-on-one showdown between you and your new rival. Nothing to be won but bragging rights of course, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be screaming bloody murder at a complete stranger because they were able to type ‘Bambi’ quicker than you could. Equal parts infuriating and utterly joyous, the game transformed my ‘sly pint’ into several un-sly ones. By the end of the night there were at least five or six people huddled around the phone howling out answers and violently trying to hammer the tiny screen. Best night ever. Available at: App Store (iPhone), Google Play (Android)

The Unofficial Parents Hand book: Eating Disorders ANOREXIA and other eating disorders are hardly a new problem for parents – it’s been an issue for many teens and their families throughout the UK for years. But as a recent study suggests that family-based therapies can combat the disorder, it seems like parents who know more and understand ‘anorexia nervosa’ better, are the ones who can help their child beat it.
Anorexia affects around 1 in 100 young people between the ages 10 of 20 each year, and while the condition is most common in teens and young adults, it can develop at any age. Suffers tend to be anxious, obsessive and depressed, with the condition being ten times more frequent among women than men. Triggers of anorexia vary, with some experts stating that the social causes have been over-stressed whilst the possibility of biological causes are being overlooked. It’s commonly believed that ‘Western’ social pressure on women to look a certain way is one
of the main causes in younger sufferers, but some scientists now believe certain people have a biological predisposition to anorexia, which may run in families.
By Chloe McGhee
What to look out for: Signs of anorexia • missing meals, eating very little or avoiding eating any fatty foods
People with anorexia often don’t seek help, often because they don’t see their condition as a problem (as being ‘thin’ is the goal) and they are commonly very good at hiding their disorder – sometimes for years. The most important first step is for someone with anorexia to realise that they need help and want to get better. If you suspect that your child or teen has anorexia, you should try to talk to them about your worries and encourage them to seek help. This can be a very difficult conversation because they may be defensive and refuse to accept they have a problem. You should try to learn as much as possible about eating disorders through research and support networks online – this will help you to understand what you’re dealing with. Before anorexia can be treated, a physical, psychological and social needs assessment will need to be carried out by the GP or an eating disorders specialist
• obsessively counting calories in food
• leaving the table immediately after eating (they often suffer from bulimia too) • to help determine the most suitable care plan. In most cases, treatment will involve a combination of psychological therapy and individually tailored advice on eating and nutrition to help you the sufferer gain weight safely. It can take several years of treatment to fully recover from anorexia and relapses are common. Around half of people with anorexia will continue to have some level of eating problem despite treatment.
If anorexia remains unsuccessfully treated for a long time, a number of serious further problems can develop. These can include fragile bones (osteoporosis), infertility, an irregular heartbeat and other heart problems. Despite being an uncommon condition, anorexia is one of the leading causes of mental health-related deaths. This can be because of the effects of malnutrition or as a result of suicide. Visit the NHS.uk website or ask your local GP for advice.
taking appetite suppressants, laxatives or diuretics (medication that helps remove fluid from the body)
• repeatedly weighing themselves or checking their body in the mirror • physical problems, such as feeling lightheaded or dizzy, hair loss or dry skin •
Anorexia can also be associated with other psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, alcohol misuse and self-harm.

AGED just 27, Glasgow funnyman extraordinaire Kevin Bridges has, this month, released his first autobiographical offering. ‘We Need to Talk about… Kevin Bridges’ chronicles the Scottish comic’s childhood, teenage years and subsequent meteoric rise to fame. Grant cardboard cut-out from his local cinema!) Bridges realised that he had two options; carry on with his ‘ordinary’ life stacking shelves at his local Co-op, and finishing a college course he had no interest in, or trying five terrifying minutes of stand-up at the Stand Comedy Club in Glasgow. Bridges brought the house down and the rest, as they say, is history. Although the ‘celebrity memoir’ is often much maligned, in an age where the merest
hint of fame appears to justify yet another autobiographical rambling, Bridges avoids the usual pitfalls and ‘We Need to Talk About… Kevin Bridges’ stands out from the crowd. Bridges own unique style and humour are central to the book, and his distinctive voice and trademark witticisms are present throughout. Bridges engages the reader fully in his story and you can’t help but be swept up in the emotion; from the nervous anticipation of that first gig, to

P lay this.. HISTORY it seems, has repeated itself. Warner Bros. have only gone and actually done it again. They’ve released a video game based on a famous licence and it’s actually good. This time its developer Monolith’s turn to shine as Warner Bros. give us Lord of the Rings spin-off Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. The title is a bit of a mouthful so from herein I’ll refer to it as SOM. SOM has seemingly come from out-of-nowhere. It’s likely that industry insiders have kept a peripheral eye on its development process, but it hasn’t seen even a fraction of the hype that some of this year’s biggest blockbusters have been receiving. Simply put, SOM has caught

his crew. Black Sails takes place twenty years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel and aims to piece together the crucial moments which eventually leads a young boy named Jim to Treasure Island itself. Flint, the most brilliant and most feared pirate captain of his day, takes on a fast-talking young addition to his crew who goes by the name John Silver, long before he was Long John. Threatened with extinction on of their pirating ways, they fight for the survival of New Providence Island, the most notorious
criminal haven of its day – a debauched paradise teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers. Black Sails will appeal to anyone who wishes to experience The Golden Age of Piracy in its true gritty and brutal form. Make no mistake, this is about as far from a Disney film as you’re going to find and there is no Jack Sparrow cracking jokes either. The show is excellently put together, and whilst it’s not going to be bothering Game of Thrones for fantasy supremacy any time soon, it is well
worth your time to give the show a try. Without giving too much away, viewers will be left gripped in as the season’s finale ends in a major cliffhanger. This should be enough to wet your appetite in time for Season 2, which airs in January. Please don’t go pillaging for your copy of Black Sails though; it’s not too expensive if you just shop around a bit. Arrrrrrr!

everyone off guard. It’s brilliant. It is impossible to not draw comparisons to the Arkham games when looking at this SOM. Not only do they share almost identical Cinderella stories in their unexpected acclaim, but they also share quite a few game mechanics too. Foremost of these is the combat system. The standard set out by Rocksteady of the simple four-button options of: attack, dodge, stun and counter is present and flows as seamlessly as ever. Obviously, it could be suggested that SOM should be chastised for using the Batman blueprint so liberally but if you’ve made a combat system so perfect, it becomes the standard in a genre. The story, set in the years between The

Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, takes place within series baddie Sauron’s home of Mordor. The player controls resurrected ranger Talion who sets out to avenge the death of his wife and son, as well as his own. Possessed by an Elven ghost-type-thing, Talion has been brought back from the brink of death to destroy the Black Hand of Sauron, an evil tyrant determined to see the Dark Lord return. Visually is where this game stumbles. SOM is graphically competent but hardly mind blowing. Textures seem a little blurry and it’s also odd to see bright colours and open areas of green grass and plant life in the game. Perhaps an unusual complaint for video game visuals,
but anyone who saw any of the Lord of the Rings films know that Mordor is supposed to be the most cold and barren wasteland in all of Middle-Earth, not the Beechgrove Garden. However, the facial animations of the orc enemies are incredible and quickly make up for any other disappointments. If you were sitting on the fence about picking this up, or perhaps just didn’t know it existed, do yourself a favour and go and pick up a copy now.

Listen to... ‘Hozier’ - Hozier By Katrina McNicol
IRISH singer-songwriter Andrew HozierByrne, known simply as Hozier, rose to fame after his breakthrough single ‘Take me to Church’ went viral on YouTube at the end of 2013.
With follow up single ‘From Eden’ garnering regular airplay from the likes of Radio One, and after a summer of festival dates, his self-titled album, released last month, artfully showcases this exciting
new artist’s full range of talent.
Hozier is a master of imagery, and darkly lyrical ‘Take me to Church’ perfectly illustrates this, using powerful religious metaphors to depict a deeply troubled relationship, with chorus lyrics “’l’ll tell you my sins/ so you can sharpen your knife” proving particularly resonant. This religious theme is further developed in ‘From Eden’ where Hozier sings “I slithered
here from Eden/ just to sit outside your door” a brilliantly ominous reference to Old Testament tale of Adam and Eve. Hozier avoids overwhelming the listener with this theme and provides balance with a number of lighter tracks acknowledging the variety of musical genres which have influenced his work. ‘Jackie and Wilson’, upbeat and playful, pays tribute to the great R & B artist Jackie Wilson, who, in this
number, Hozier and his fantasy girl will name their children after, whilst ‘Someone New’ is light-hearted and optimistically romantic. Appealing to a wide range of musical tastes, with a nod to blues, rock, indie and jazz, listeners will certainly be falling in love “just a little ol’ little bit” with Hozier.

IT’S one of the most stressful times in your life. Once you have finally decided on the house or flat of your dreams you need to pack everything up, move it and then unpack it all again. However, it CAN be easy and stress-free. I moved flat last weekend and, while it wasn’t completely smooth sailing, let’s put it this way - I don’t have any grey hairs which is a plus. Here are my top tips for moving house...
Start packing a few weeks in advance
Damp Course Slating Tiling New Roofs uPVC Guttering
By getting a head start on packing, means you won’t be rushing about on the last day flinging glasses and tripping over boxes. Start packing things you don’t use such as books, DVDs and summer clothes. This will also give you more space to organise.

Ask friends and family members to give you a hand on the day. The strong ones can do the heavy lifting and ask the grannies and aunties to unpack. The will love to be involved and if their anything like my granny and auntie, love ‘footering’ around! It also gives you the chance to have a mini house-warming later that night and shout them a takeaway and drinks to say thanks.
Label, label, label!
Labelling boxes when you are packing makes it so much easier when you get to the new pad. Buy a sharpie and write the room it’s going in and what’s in it, i.e., Bedroom - shoes. I also took it that step further by putting post it notes on all the kitchen cupboards where I wanted things to go, cups/ plates/ pots and pans etc. This is will be a godsend for two reasons; you won’t have to listen to your helpers shouting you every five minutes asking if you where you want things and you won’t have to phone them up days later asking where your sieve is!
Plan and prepare!
When packing, make sure you know where the tea, mugs and kettle are! You will need these, trust me! It’s also a good idea to pack an ‘overnight bag’ containing toothbrush, toothpaste and pajamas as the last thing you will want to do is search through boxes late at night. Have things like curtains and a duvet handy for sleeping that night.
Give yourself time
If you need to be out of your old place for a certain date, move a good few days before. This cuts out the pressure as you don’t have to rush to get everything out on the one day. It also gives you time to clean it before handing back the keys.

DVLA, HMRC and Police unite to crackdown on illegal vehicles By Kaitlin McManus
FOREIGN registered vehicles driven illegally on Britain’s roads will be seized by police, it has been revealed.
Plans were unveiled last week by Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin, who believes the vehicles are a “danger” on the roads. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and the police are joining forces to catch the foreign motorists who driving in the UK illegally. Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: “These vehicles are a danger on our roads and the government is determined to crack down on foreign drivers who deliberately refuse to register and license their vehicles. “We will use all of the information available to us to make sure we take tough action where necessary to keep our roads safe.” Foreign vehicles must be registered and licensed in the UK when they have been here more than six months in any twelve month period.
However, it’s estimated that up to 350,000 foreign registered vehicles entered the UK and have overstayed the 6 month exemption period without registering and licensing between 2010 and 2013. This has been costing the taxpayer £60 million every year in lost tax revenue.

Think road trips are over with the end of the summer?
By Chloe McGhee
The new trial will start on 3 November, will run until February 2015. Police will be allowed to seize and impounded the vehicles of those who have overstayed. The registered keeper will have to pay a £200 release fee and a £160 surety fee, plus storage fees, to get the vehicle back. Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury Priti Patel said: “This clear measure will make sure that our roads are safe and all drivers pay the taxes that are due. “The joint force of the police, DVLA and HMRC will clamp down on those who break the law, fail to pay their taxes and put lives at risk on our roads. The trial, starting in November, will help reduce the revenue lost through drivers using our roads illegally.”

Scots content with Euro 2016 campaign opening Poland 2 – 2 Scotland By Joe Mackay
A LATE equaliser denied Scotland a vital European Championship qualification Group D victory as the Tartan Army drew 2-2 in a thriller in Poland. On the back of five clean sheets in their previous seven matches, an uncharacteristic Scottish defensive error from Alan Hutton gifted Poland the lead just after the ten-minute mark, with Kryzsztof Maczynski finishing well from just outside the box. The visitors were far from overawed however, and were quickly level after Shaun Maloney’s third goal for Scotland finished off a fine move. Scotland then completed the turnaround, with Steven Naismith getting the slightest of touches to a free-kick which was floated in by James Morrison to send the visiting Tartan Army into raptures. The Scotland team were looking comfortable, but their resistance did eventually give when Arkadiusz Milik
fired an equaliser past Marshall to ensure a nail-biting final 14 minutes. The result sees Scotland remain third in the group, with hopes of qualification for their first international tournament since 1998 still in the balance. Poland stay top.

Glasgow City lift the cup for 8th successive season
FOOTBALL champions Glasgow City have won the Scottish Women’s Premier League title for the eighth successive season. The team were presented with the SWPL trophy after their 3-1 win over Hibernian at Excelsior Stadium, Airdrie. The Champions were up 3-0 at half time and were set to have a comfortable second half until Hibernian replied with a goal of their own. Too little, too late however and it was not enough to cast a cloud over Glasgow City’s day. The game’s outcome was to have little consequence anyway as City finished 17 points clear at the top of the table. Challengers Hibernian were likely experiencing a terrible case of deja-vu as they received a 3-0 thumping from City back in May.
University lecturer, Lynn, brings a wealth of experience to the role, including coach development, education and mentoring. Recently he contributed to the coaching of several medal-winning athletes at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, as well as acting as director of the Achieve 2014 program in Scotland during the events. Lynn, whose background is in academic teaching, developed a Masters degree program for performance coaches at Stirling University, of which is still course director. Commenting on his appointment, Lynn said: “Scottish Swimming is on a real high after
Roger Federer wins Shanghai Masters By Chloe McGhee
After the win, Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black said: “I asked the players to play at a really high tempo from the start today and I felt we did that and it really set the tone of the whole game for us. It was pleasing to see us get early goals and pretty much kill the game at half time and allow us to see the result out. I felt we did that second half. We were disappointed to lose the goal, of course we are, but when you start making a number of changes, it doesn’t matter who they are, it affects the flow and balance of the game. However, overall I am delighted with the performance and three points.” She added: “Now that the title has been won the priorities of our club have changed. The Scottish Cup and Champions League need our full attention.”

another successful Commonwealth Games and to have the chance to work with the swimmers and coaches in this role is a real honour. We have some established performers and some outstanding potential to look out for in the next few years. I plan to support the excellent performance environments already in place and challenge our swimmers and coaches to make the gains necessary for even greater success.” Ally Whike, Director of Performance at Scottish Swimming, commented: “I am delighted to welcome Alan to the team and look forward to working with him. I expect that he will use his huge experience to work with coaches to deliver improved performances in the pool in the next years to come.” Lynn was previously named ‘Coach of the Year’ by SportsScotland in 1999.

ROGER Federer won his first Shanghai Masters title with a straight-sets victory over Gilles Simon. The Swiss world number three let out a huge roar after unseeded Frenchman Simon hit a forehand into the net to give him a 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-2) victory.
Federer, 33, won the opening set with his only backhand winner down the line. Simon led 6-5 in the second set and had two set points but two unforced errors allowed Federer a way back and the 17-time Grand Slam winner took advantage.
Ticket cost up in Scottish Championship By Joe Mackay
THE average price of both the cheapest season ticket and match-day ticket in the Scottish Championship have risen this season, according to a survey carried out by the BBC. The least expensive match-day ticket is up by 8% while the cheapest season ticket is up by 12%. Alloa, Cowdenbeath, Livingston and Dumbarton all lifted their cheapest price, with the relegation of Hearts and Hibs also raising the average. The average price of the cheapest season ticket has risen from £218 to £245, while the average cost of a match ticket has also increased from £16 to £18. Although the average have increased, Hearts have actually dropped the price of their cheapest
season ticket from £280 to £260, and their lowest priced match-day ticket from £18 to £17. Every Championship club - other than Hearts, Hibs and Rangers - have increased at least one of their prices for tickets in the categories of cheapest match-day, most expensive match-day and both categories of season tickets. The cheapest match-day experience in Scotland can be found at League Two sides Albion Rovers and Annan Athletic, at £14 for a ticket, programme, pie and cup of tea. And the lowest priced cup of tea in Scottish senior football can be found at Elgin City, who charge just 60p. Rangers were omitted because they did not provide data to the BBC for the survey.

Glasgow Warriors ready to do battle with Bath Issue 4 | 17th - 23rd October 2014 | Published by Caledonia Publications
Glasgow Warriors v Bath Saturday 18th October
Kick-off: 3.15pm, Scotstoun Glasgow
Glasgow Warriors are expected to bounce back against Bath this weekend, after their Ulster defeat last week.
GLASGOW prop, Euan Murray, has told BBC Scotland he expects his side will bounce their first league defeat of the season when they tackle Bath in Europe. Warriors face the English outfit on Saturday in the European Rugby Champions Cup, with the Scots smarting from their Pro-12 defeat at Ulster. “It was good for the boys to play at that level in that intense atmosphere,” Murray said “We shot ourselves in the foot at times but we’ll park that and look forward.” Glasgow’s Mark Bennett was carried off in the defeat to Ulster following a tackle by Alan O’Connor, who has now been cited for alleged foul play. “It’s always worrying when your team-mate is down for
so long but thankfully he’s fine,” Murray said. Meanwhile, Murray hopes to be involved in Scotland’s Autumn internationals against Argentina, New Zealand and Tonga. “I had a few injuries last year so that was really disappointing,” he said. “I’d love to play for Scotland and get that elusive victory over the All Blacks. “It’s a good line up. I’m glad we’re not playing New Zealand first. We’re getting a bit of a warm-up, although it will be a really hard game against the Argentinians, as usual. “I’m feeling good and try not to think too much about the age. We’ve got quite a few experienced guys, a good mixture, with some really good talented young players coming through.”
