Salmond ‘confident’ NHS could cope “ with Ebola case ” Issue 3 | 10th - 16th October 2014 | Published by Caledonia Publications

...I am confident our NHS is ready to respond.

First Minister Alex Salmond

First Minister Alex Salmond and Health Secretary Alex Neil believe Scotland is prepared should a case of Ebola be confirmed in the country.

AS concerns and fears grow surrounding the rapidly spiralling Ebola epidemic, heightened this week by the death of Thomas Eric Duncan - the first man diagnosed with the disease outside Africa – Scotland’s First Minister met with The Scottish Government Resilience Committee to discuss the country’s preparedness. Health Secretary Alex Neil was part of the meeting, along with experts in infectious diseases from Health Protection Scotland and acting Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Aileen Keel. Speaking after the meeting, Salmond stated his confidence in the ability of

PREPARING FOR EBOLA: First Minister Alex Salmond chaired The Scottish Government Resilience Committee earlier this week to discuss Scotland’s readiness should an Ebola case be confirmed.

Scotland’s reaction should Ebola be confirmed here. He said: “It is crucial our health service is geared up to deal with any potential confirmed cases of Ebola in Scotland. “That was the basis of the meeting and I am confident our NHS is ready to respond. “

Mr Neil, Health Secretary, also said the situation was being monitored very closely and was keen to emphasis the expertise and facilities in place in Scotland. “Our public health experts, including those at Health Protection Scotland, have been monitoring the position very closely since the

outbreak began and putting in place the awareness and advice to ensure our health service is as well prepared as possible to respond.” He added: “While the risk remains relatively low, we are ensuring that we have the robust procedures in place to identify cases rapidly. Our

health service also has the expertise and facilities to ensure that confirmed Ebola cases would be contained and isolated effectively minimising any potential spread of the disease.

EBOLA EPIDEMIC: Ebola has now killed more than 3,000 people and infected more than 7,200, mostly in West Africa.

Continued from front page “Scotland’s NHS has proved it is well able to cope with infectious diseases in the past, such as swine flu, and I am confident we will be able to respond effectively again. First Minister Alex Salmond made it clear that we should not only be thinking of our own country, but of the places most severely affected by the outbreak. He said: “…we must not only asses our preparedness in Scotland, we must also ensure we are doing all we can to support the efforts to contain the spread of Ebola in West Africa. “I have asked for an urgent assessment of what we can do to build on the £500,000 we have already provided to the World Health Organisation and Scotland will do whatever we can to assist.”

countries - Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone - with 2,240 people known to have been infected and 1,229 deaths. That makes it the largest recorded outbreak in terms of cases, deaths and geographical spread, according to the World Health Organisation. Mr Neil added: “We will go on monitoring the situation and maintain a high state of vigilance across our health system. “SGoRR will meet again in the coming days to continue to closely monitor developments and ensure robust resilience arrangements are in place.” Concerns over the spread of Ebola worsened this week, after the death of Texas Ebola patient Thomas Duncan, a Liberian national and the first patient diagnosed outside of Africa. President Barack Obama said the new security measures would “give us the ability to isolate, evaluate and monitor travellers as needed, and we’ll be able to collect any contact information that’s necessary. “If we don’t follow protocols and procedures that are put in place, then we’re putting folks in our communities at risk,” he added. “We don’t have a lot of margin for error.” The first case of contagion was also confirmed in Spain on Monday, where a nurse who treated an Ebola victim in Madrid contracted the virus herself.

BUDGET BOOST: Finance Secretary John Swinney (pictured) will announce his first annual budget to make use of new tax powers

HOMEBUYERS could be in for a boost when Scottish Finance Secretary John Swinney announces details of a new tax to replace stamp duty. It will come as he sets out the first annual budget to make use of new tax powers, due to kick in next year. Mr Swinney said Scotland’s economy was back to pre-recession levels, but still faced a squeeze on public spending. Labour said the finance secretary had consistently failed to properly fund local authorities and colleges. The stamp duty replacement - to be called the Land and Building Transactions Tax - will be the first time Scottish Parliament has levied taxation since the Union in 1707. Scottish ministers said the levy coming into force in April 2015 - would have a progressive rather than a flat rate, and it is thought Mr Swinney will

cut the burden on lower-price property purchases, making the cost match the actual price more closely. Addressing parliament, the finance secretary will also outline details of a new tax paid by companies and councils when they dispose of waste to landfill - one of several new powers devolved to Holyrood following proposals put forward by the Calman Commission to examine devolution 10 years on. Mr Swinney will also re-state his commitment to gaining further financial powers for Scotland, as part of the Smith Commission, announced by Prime Minister David Cameron in the wake of the independence referendum “No” vote. The Scottish government’s annual budget, worth about £30bn a year and funded by a Treasury block grant, requires the final approval of the Scottish Parliament.

Glasgow puts Gaelic on the map A MAP highlighting the various Gaelic language classes available across the city has been developed to encourage more people to learn the language and to promote the broad range of opportunities in Glasgow. The map was developed by the Gaelic Adult Learning Operations Group, which was set up by Glasgow City Council to widen the availability of Gaelic learning opportunities in Glasgow. Public authorities have a statutory obligation to prepare a Gaelic Language Plan under the Gaelic

Language (Scotland) Act 2005. The Council’s four year plan sets out the actions it will take to boost the number of people speaking it dayto-day, encourage wider use of the language and appreciation of its place in the city by increasing the visibility and audibility of Gaelic in Glasgow so that more people will learn and use it confidently in aspects of everyday life. The map of current Gaelic learning provision in the city will be distributed among partners, in libraries and community venues.

Former Rangers chief Craig Whyte ordered to attend court or face jail CRAIG Whyte, the former Rangers chief, is facing jail after not showing up at a string of High Court hearings. The revelation comes in a ruling by judge Mr Justice Arnold in relation to Whyte’s legal battle with Ticketus, over the sale of the Ibrox side’s season tickets. The ruling states that Whyte now faces up to 28 days in prison if he did not attend court in London on September 29. Ticketus’ legal representatives attempted to contact the former Rangers owner without success, leaving texts and voicemails to a number known to have been used by Whyte.

The judge served a “suspended committal order”, which is a legal judgment ordering someone to attend a court date. There is an estimated £20m still outstanding in relation to the Ticketus case, the judge ruled. In December last year, Whyte lost his appeal against Ticketus in the latest round of a High Court fight with the ticket-buying firm. The London ticketing firm raised the legal action against Whyte over the deal he struck for Ibrox season ticket sales. Whyte appealed after being ordered to pay more than £17m to Ticketus last year.

Man accused of Scots comedian murder arrested 17 years after death

A MAN has been arrested in connection with the death of Scottish Comedian, Hugh Ferris, who was found dead in his home almost 17 years ago. Graham Fraser, 52, has been accused of beating, tying up and murdering Ferris at his flat in Pollokshields in December 1997.

The arrest comes after the reopening of the case in 2011, and it is believed that Fraser joined Donald Murray, who is now dead, in breaking into the 58-year-old comedian’s ground floor property in Leven Street. It is claimed that Mr Ferris was threatened with a chisel against his neck before being beaten, while his hands and feet were bound with an electrical cable. Pathologists said he died of a heart attack which detectives believe he suffered because of the robbery. Allegedly, a telephone cable was disconnected from the wall socket and there was no attempt to get medical help to Mr Ferris, who was tied up and unable to get assistance for himself. Mr Fraser, from Govanhill, was not present during the hearing at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday. The victim, Mr Ferris, was a popular

Security guard injured in Arcade heist gets pay docked

DISAPPOINTED: Mr Ferrier’s wages have been withheld after being signed off due to injuries sustained in the robbery at the Argyll Arcade.

A SECURITY guard who tried to stop armed robbers in a Glasgow shopping centre has had his wages withheld after being signed off from work for a fortnight by his doctor. RESTORATION PROJECT: The new waterproof roof is put in place as part of the rebuild

GLASGOW iconic School of Art, which was badly damaged after a fire in May, took another step towards restoration this week with the addition of

temporary waterproof roof. Contractors placed a specially designed aluminium frame on top of the Mackintosh building, which will now be covered in watertight material.

A large crane was used to position the roof sections, the first step in what is believed to be a three year restoration project and estimated to cost up to £30million. By Chloe McGhee

Employers GMB have agreed to cover George Ferrier’s statutory sick pay - but not his wages. Mr Ferrier, 56, was set upon by thieves carrying baseball bats and axes as he tried to prevent their escape from the upmarket retail district off Buchanan Street on September 14. The security guard sustained multiple injuries to his legs from being struck

by a baseball bat as he guided staff to safety. Mr Ferrier was forced to eventually let the robbers pass after they ran at him with axes. Mr Ferrier told the Daily Record that he was “disappointed” with the way his employers had treated him, accusing them of not caring about his health and well-being after the attack. He said: “I’ve had a lot of really nice feedback but the work has been keen to get me back as quickly as possible. If they think I should be getting just sick pay after what’s happened, that’s up to them - but it doesn’t seem right to me. I’m disappointed in them.”

The UK’s Most Man Wanted Man… brutally

from Drumchapel murdered A NORTH Glasgow man has topped the UK’s Most Wanted List, it was announced this week, by independent watchdog Crimestoppers.

Jonathan Kelly, from the Drumchapel area, has been on the run from police since last a month after breaching a conditional licence order enforced upon him on release from prison back in August. News of his most wanted status comes just two weeks after armed police staged a siege in the Govanhill area of the city after responding to a ‘tip off’ about the 33-year-old’s presence there. Police concluded their operation after four hours but were unable to capture Kelly. Detective Inspector Ian Hylands of Drumchapel Police Office said this week: “Significant police enquiries

are ongoing to trace Mr Kelly, however, at this time there have been no positive sightings.

“Unfortunately, we have had very little information from the public regarding his whereabouts. As I said before, although we do not consider him to be a danger to the public, we do believe that due to circumstances that he may pose a risk and would advise the public not to approach Mr Kelly but to contact police immediately via 999. “In that regard, it is imperative that the public get in touch with any information they think may lead us to where he is. No matter how trivial they think it may be, best to give the police a call. Kelly is described as white, 5 ft 9 in height, with short brown hair and of a heavy build.

Constable Gavin Irvine, Road Policing Unit, Glasgow, said: “A number of people stopped to try and help Mr Gilmour and we have spoken to them about what happened, however, we are still keen to speak to anyone else who witnessed the crash. “This is quite a busy road and at this time there would have been a number of people about.” Police are urging anyone who has any information to contact police via the non-emergency number 101 or in confidence to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Glasgow becomes first UK University to divest from fossil fuel industry THE University of Glasgow has become the first university in the UK to commit to fully disinvesting from fossil fuel industry companies. This commitment is subject to reassurance that the financial impact for the University is acceptable, the detail of which will be monitored by the University’s governing body, the University Court. Full divestment will mean the reallocation of around £18 million of current investments over a 10 year period. The decision was made after a period of consultation by an independent working group taking evidence from the Glasgow University Climate Action Society and the University Investment Committee. David Newall, Secretary of the University of Glasgow Court, said: “The University recognises the devastating impact that climate change may have on our planet, and the need

for the world to reduce its dependence on Fossil Fuels. Over the coming years we will steadily reduce our investment in the fossil fuel extraction industry, while also taking steps to reduce our carbon consumption.”

Housing Minister One month to register proposes changes children for primary one to tenants’ rights they may feel more confident in asserting their rights and flagging any concerns about their rented property without fear of eviction. The proposals also seek to modernise rules which can see tenants unfairly removed from their homes at a landlord’s discretion. The Housing Minister added: “In addition to this if tenants know they can only be asked to leave their home on certain specified grounds they will have a greater feeling of security.

MORE SECURITY: Housing Minister Margaret Burgess (pictured) believes a new system will provide security for both tenants and landlords.

PLANS to give tenants more rights over their landlords has been discussed this week in a new consultation launched by the Scottish government’s Housing Minister, Margaret Burgess. If the proposals pass into law, landlords will have to offer a minimum tenancy of six months and the length of time they must give notice before any lease changes will be dependent on how long the tenant has lived in the property. Margaret Burgess said: “If tenants have more security in their tenure,

“But equally a new tenancy system provides an opportunity to improve the private rented sector for landlords. We can tackle some of the long-standing issues they face, like problems around recovering the possession of their property and rent arrears. These changes could give landlords more reassurance in the system. “Housing is a priority for this government which is why we are consulting on these proposals to make sure our private rented sector is a strong as it can be. Kirsty Mackenzie from New Gorbals in Glasgow’s East end welcomed the proposals. The local student and waitress said: “I think this is a great move. It takes pressure off and gives us more control of how we live. It’ll also put an end to any nasty surprises.”

Major terror plot foiled

FOUR men have been arrested in a series of raids across London as part of a Met Police investigation into “Islamistrelated terrorism”.

The men, one of whom was reportedly Tasered, were detained as part of an investigation by the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command. Officers said they believe the raids disrupted what could have been a “significant plot”, according to a Whitehall source quoted by the Press Association. All four suspects have been taken to police stations in central London and remain in custody. A police statement said: “SO15 officers were assisted in the

THE date to register children for primary one has been brought back to November, giving parents a month from now to do so.

which runs from 10 - 14 November this year.

The earlier November registration date was introduced last year, following the council’s Executive Committee agreement and to allow schools and the authority to more effectively manage the allocation of children to schools, particularly for those living in the catchment area.

There have been some major improvements to schools in Glasgow in last couple of years as part of the council’s £250million 4Rs programme to rebuild or refurbish every primary school in the city.

This means parents and carers of children who are due to start primary one in August 2015 can register their child during school registration week

“A number of residential addresses and vehicles are being searched by specialist officers in west and central London as part of the investigation. The searches are ongoing. “These arrests and searches are part of an ongoing investigation into Islamist-related terrorism.”

Stephen Curran, Executive Member for Education and Young People, said: “We have some of the best schools in Scotland and it is important for families living in the area to check out their local school and register there.

If submitting a placing request parents must register their child at their catchment school in the first instance. Having registration week in November also allows the council to comply with legislation and advise parents, in writing, of the school their child will be going to in time. There will be a further opportunity for parents to register their child in January 2015.

US Military Jet Crashes In Lincolnshire A US fighter pilot ejected to safety as his military jet crashed in a Lincolnshire field. Emergency services were alerted by members of the public to the incident, involving an F-15 fighter plane, near Broadgate in Weston Hills, at about 3.30pm on Wednesday. Police advised people to avoid the area as fumes from the burning plane may be hazardous.

execution of warrants at one of the addresses by officers from the Specialist Firearms Command (SCO19). No shots were fired,”

Parents are being urged to visit their local school and see what it has to offer before enrolling their child.

“Of course, parents still have the right to make a placing request but we would encourage them to consider their local school first.”

FRENCH energy giant EDF has been given approval to build a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point in north Somerset, it has been confirmed.

The new-build power station is part of a plan to replace 20% of Britain’s ageing nuclear power infrastructure. Approval for the construction has been confirmed by regulators at the European Commission, following prior approval by Competition Commissioner Vice-President Joaquin Almunia. The EU examined the bid over concerns the UK Government was giving excess help to the plan. Britain has previously estimated the new build cost at £16bn but some forecasts have put the total price up to £25bn.

A spokesman for USAF’s 48 Fighter Wing based at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk confirmed one of its F-15s was involved in the incident during a training exercise. He added: “The pilot ejected and is safe.” A Lincolnshire Police spokesman said: “The pilot appears to have escaped with very minor injury and has left the scene by helicopter.

“The plane has come down in an isolated rural area and no premises have been affected. “A cordon has been put in place and the public are advised to avoid the area as the plane is alight and the fumes may be hazardous.”

FirstGroup lose ScotRail to Dutch operator Abellio DUTCH rail operator Abellio will take over the running of ScotRail services from April 2015, after promising to invest millions in improving services. It will take over from Aberdeen-based FirstGroup, which has run most Scottish rail services for the past 10 years. The company has also pledged to deliver a better deal for ScotRail workers. FirstGroup had been competing against Abellio, Arriva, MTR, and National Express for the right to operate the ScotRail contract. Unions and Scottish Labour reacted angrily to the announcement, saying there was support for services to be put into public ownership.

They had called for the suspension of the franchising process, in the hope such a move would have been permitted under new devolved powers due to come to the Scottish Parliament. ScotRail tweeted after the announcement “Thanks to all who have travelled with First ScotRail since ’04 – an era of great achievement for Scotland’s railways.”

International News Moroccan holiday-goer arrested for ‘being gay’ has been released A BRITISH man has been released from a Moroccan prison, where he was locked up for “homosexual acts”, it has been revealed.

Ray Cole, 69, from Kent, was on a 5-week holiday in Marrakesh last month to visit a friend, Jamal Jam Wald Nass. It has been said that the pair were approached at a bus stop by police officers, and were arrested under the suspicion of homosexuality, it was reported. Retired magazine publisher Ray was jailed on September and has been imprisoned since. His son Adrian Cole claims the authorities didn’t notify his family or the British Consulate of the arrest. When police searched Mr Cole’s mobile phone and found a photograph of the two men together, it was used in court as ‘proof’ of homosexual acts. Homosexuality is still a crime in Morocco, with a maximum possible sentence of three years.

UK Soldiers to be deployed To Ebola Epicentre

BRITISH troops are to be sent to Sierra Leone, to fight the spiralling Ebola outbreak. Soldiers from the Royal Scots Borders 1st Battalion, based in Holywood, Northern Ireland, will be stationed near the capital Freetown. Around 40 troops have already arrived in the country, said the Ministry of Defence, and more are flying out soon. The Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship Argus will also sail and moor off the country’s coast and could be used to evacuate any British casualties if needed. Three Merlin helicopters will be onboard to fly doctors and personnel to hard-to-reach areas. Some 600-700 British military personnel will be in the area at full deployment. It comes after Prime Minister David Cameron’s call with President Koroma of Sierra Leone on Tuesday, in which they discussed how the £125 million in UK aid was helping efforts, including support for 700 extra beds in key treatment centres and training for medical staff. The President said the situation continued to be very serious and they were increasing their response, with a need to train more medical staff, have a better system for servicing treatment centres and improve the burial process. The Prime Minister said the UK would continue to do all it could to support their efforts.

THE iconic Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York has been sold by Hilton Worldwide to Chinese firm Anbang Insurance Group for $1.95bn (£1.22bn). However, Hilton will continue to operate the hotel “for the next 100 years”, including renovating the property in the coming months. Shares in Hilton jumped 3% on news of the sale, before later declining. Hilton said it would use the proceeds from the sale to invest in other hotels and assets in the United States. The Waldorf purchase by Anbang is the most ever paid for a US building by a Chinese buyer, according to Bloomberg. The Beijing-based firm has more than 700bn Chinese yuan ($114.03: £72bn) in assets. Some analysts believe it may look to convert some of the hotel rooms on the higher floors into private residences.

ON THE RISE: Comedian Gary Little’s sold out shows at some of the best comedy venues in the City

Glasgow’s not so

Little funnyman

Comedian Gary Little talks to Glasgow City News reporter Ross Swanson about humble beginnings, gigging everywhere from Glasgow to New York, and climbing the popularity ladder – as well as some Munros. RARELY will you hear about the genesis of a successful career having more humble beginnings than that of Gary Little. The award winning comedian is one of Glasgow’s fastest rising stand-up stars, but he claims to have gotten into the business by complete accident after a chance invite to get up on stage and try his hand at being professionally funny. “I was just the ar**hole at a party,” he flatly states, “Well, either the ar**hole or the funny guy. Someone had seen me about and was putting on a comedy night. He asked me along and that was it. It started then.” That – slightly – younger version of Gary Little, who was already technically middle-aged (sorry mate), had no idea he’d just stumbled into a prosperous career opportunity. Over a decade after that night at The Halt Bar in Glasgow back in 2003, Gary

has been making a name for himself by gigging around the city, as well as the rest of the UK. The 51-year-old funnyman has earned the right to be considered one of the country’s finest in the comedy game. During this year’s Glasgow Comedy Festival he headlined sold out shows at both the West End’s trendy Òran Mór venue, and at the city’s famous comedy proving ground The Stand. It’s quite refreshing then, to see then that the entertaining humorist is incredibly downto-earth about his successes. “I don’t have any steps to take, it’s just what it is,” says Gary nonchalantly, “As long as I’m gigging that’s all I really like to do.”

Currently planning a new show that could see him return for a second time to the grandiose King’s Theatre in Glasgow’s city centre, the pressure will be on to top his massively popular festival performances. Don’t go rushing out trying to get tickets yet though as the comedian hasn’t began the actual writing process. “I’m not really in that frame of mind yet,” he says, “I don’t want to do it unless I’ve got a show to perform. I don’t just want to take the money and do it for the sake of it.” Standing at 6’2” and with a briskly clean shaven head, it’s easy to be intimidated by his doorman-like stature. However, within seconds of talking to him you quickly realise that old proverb about judging books by their cover’s to be startlingly accurate in his case. A gentle giant indeed, despite having spent some time in jail when he was younger for drug offences, Gary Little is about as wholesome as they come in the year 2014. The comedian confesses he rather spend his spare time with his two dogs in the great outdoors than out partying these days. “I’ve done 97 out of 283 of them, I think,” says Gary, talking about his Munro-bagging hobby. He regularly climbs some of the Scotland-exclusive mountain collection whenever he finds time.

I don’t want to do it unless I’ve got a show to perform. I don’t just want to take the money and do it for the sake of it.”

“I was oot on Saturday there and did a wee quick one,” he says broadly, “but the more you want to do, the further you have to travel.” The standup hopes to conquer them all in time though, using his regular trips to Aberdeen’s comedy-starved scene for gigs as a perfect excuse to break out the walking boots and explore the nearby Cairngorms. Gary explains that for comedians, a sense of identity and where you’re

PERFORMING: The local funnyman is down-to-earth about his success from is important. With many Glaswegian comics sharing similar styles, it’s not hard to see that geography is crucial to your sense of social awareness as well as your sense of humour. “I think maybe the dark humour here is more noticeable,” Gary confirms, “Glasgow has a self-deprecating style and we can laugh at ourselves more than say, someone from Edinburgh,” he chuckles, “and they really should be laughing at themselves.”

and there were 40 girls on a hen night, and they’re not wanting to listen to the big shouty Glaswegian guy. They wanted the wee good looking guy who was on at the start. Sometimes that happens.”

Whether a welcome change or horrifying culture shock, the comedian still plays in front of some obviously partisan audiences. Maybe the inevitable move onto television will see his stock rise on a national level at least. Until then though, the

Of course, that’s not to say he feels comedy stylings only work in his home city. Indeed, Billy Connolly is arguably equally as famous stateside as he is in the UK, if not more-so. During Gary’s own shows in New York he explained that he had done very little to change his material from its original form. There was an exact quote about that there, but it was too sweary for print. The sentence would have had more confusing asterisks’ than a forgotten internet password. You get the idea though?

“I did a gig this week and someone came up at the end, and asked if they could book me for their party. Turns out it’s a house party and I’ll be playing in the garage. It’s an ‘up and over’ door she added, knowing full well that would be the clincher for the deal. That was until she told me it was only a one motor garage and the freezer and other stuff was in there. I don’t want to sound like a diva, but surely at this stage of my career I’m a two car garage act?” Gary will be performing this weekend in Glasgow at a regular charity event he takes part in which helps raise awareness – and money of course – for various good causes. The ‘Comedy Cronies’ show takes place at Wild Cabaret, towards the city’s East End, and looks set to gather funds for Yorkhill Children’s Hospital, Crohn’s and Colitis Scotland, among others.

As far as he has come in being considered one of Glasgow’s highest rated comedians, Gary Little still understands the necessity to maintain humility when performing in front of some of Scotland’s most notoriously hostile and uncaring crowds. He explains: “If they’re listening, you’ll get laughs, but I did a gig a couple of weeks ago

ever humble Gary seems happy to just be asked to perform.

The ensemble show features Gary alongside fellow funnymen Scott Gibson, Joe Heenan and Jamie Dalgleish this Sunday October 12 at 2pm.

FAMILIAR FACE: You can catch Gary’s sell-out performance from the 2014 Glasgow Comedy Festival on his live show DVD.

“Come along for a wee Sunday session,” urges Gary. Sounds like an idea.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service

Fact. Scotland’s fire crews are up to four times busier than usual on November 5th, wasting time and resources attending unsafe bonfires.

TO BOOK A FREE HOME FIRE SAFETY VISIT Call 0800 0731 999 or visit www.firescotland.gov.uk Bonfires and fireworks produce large volumes of carbon emissions and other harmful gases. Please protect the environment and attend an organised display.

BONFIRE SAFETY ADVICE • Never drink alcohol if you are tending a bonfire or setting off fireworks – remember it is an offence to consume alcohol in a public place. • To reduce the emission of harmful smoke and combustion products bonfires should comprise of untreated wood and paper based materials only. • There is a danger of explosion from pressurised containers or sealed vessels amongst bonfire material or irresponsibly thrown on burning bonfires. • Never throw fireworks on bonfires. • Never use flammable liquids to ignite bonfires -

use proprietary fire lighters. • Smoke from bonfires must not pose a public nuisance, affect visibility on roads or otherwise inconvenience vehicular traffic. • Sparks, flying embers or burning debris must not endanger nearby property. • Never leave a burning/ smouldering bonfire unsupervised – make sure it is completely extinguished. Any bonfire failing to satisfy safety conditions or where people are behaving irresponsibly may be deemed dangerous and as such, subject to being either removed, extinguished or otherwise made safe.

FIREWORKS Watching fireworks can be great fun for children.

However, figures show that, more often than not, it’s children rather than adults who are injured by fireworks. Over the past five years over 350 pre-school children, some as young as one year old, were treated in hospital for firework injuries. Be safe and always follow the fireworks code. For further information about fireworks & the Fireworks Code visit www. saferfireworks.com

WARNING! FIRE AND ALCOHOL DON’T MIX! Do not go near bonfires or fireworks whilst under the influence of alcohol. Some individuals may be tempted to ignore local bye-laws and drink alcohol in public places. This could lead to Police issuing a fixed penalty ticket or a report being sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

SCHOOLS & COMMUNITY GROUPS Are you a teacher, youth worker or do you run a local community group? If so, you can help the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to reduce the risk of injury to our children and young people by raising their awareness of the serious dangers associated with fireworks and bonfires. The UK Government website address www.gov.uk/ government/publications/ promoting-firework-safetyguide-to-working-with-localmedia provides a range of resources to support you to deliver key safety messages. Q. How did Liquorice Media begin? A. As a boutique operation with a hands-on, can-do attitude, Liquorice Media is unencumbered by tiers of management, so that it is better placed than some of its competitors to react to changing client demands at short notice. Few, if any, public relations principals are willing to assume direct responsibility for executing an agreed public relations strategy to anything like the same extent as we do. It was

the recognition of this distinction that prompted us to establish Liquorice Media seven years ago and thereby address that market opportunity.

Q. What was the most difficult aspect of setting up your own company? A. Plucking up the courage to take the plunge.

Q. What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting their own business? A. Go for it!

Q. What’s been the biggest achievement/highlight for Liquorice Media so far? A. Most weeks yield some new highlight – though securing front cover space for clients in magazines and newspapers – or prime time TV slots – always feels like a special achievement.

Q. What’s next for Liquorice Media? A. More of the same!

An unprecedented paranormal event is calling you to Stirling this Hallowe’en: the first Scottish Paranormal Festival! Poltergeists, mediumship, ghosts, UFOs, aliens, witchery, Highland second sight and mysterious creatures will get the serious attention of world-class speakers, backed by an impressive programme of music, dance, film, theatre and interactive ‘otherwordly’ activities over 4 days in five venues Continued inside....

People can be helped to understand and manage their anomalous experiences. Much of the ‘paranormal’ turns out to be normal, at least for the people to whom it happens.”

Scots seem to take these qualities for granted. For example, you might have heard that Bonnybridge is a UFO ‘hotspot,’ but you may not know that West Kilbride has had more UFO sightings in recent years and that Glasgow UFO sightings have been the highest in UK rankings. One author has called Glasgow ‘Scotland’s most

Nick is often asked if he has had experiences that he cannot explain and his answer is a definite yes. Some mysteries probably reflect what science has not discovered yet, but

This has emerged as a result of a unique collaboration between the film producer Peter Broughan and several funding partners, including Event Scotland and Stirling Council, and it happens at Halloween, that terrifying time when the veil between this world and other dimensions is believed to become thinner.

As one paranormal expert explained, “When mediums, psychics, paranormal investigators and ghost-hunters spend the weekend together focussed on evidence for paranormal activity, participants’ awareness will be heightened, especially in atmospheric locations, so no-one should be surprised if the paranormal manifests. I’d be surprised if it didn’t.” Peter Broughan, the Festival Director, stated, “Stirling is a stunning location for our Festival, and our slogan is, ‘We have been expecting you for a long time...’ and cameras will be filming it all to capture people’s strange experiences.” In inimitable Scottish style, there will be plenty of opportunities for fun and laughter too, with a programme of scary films, paranormal comedy, drama premieres by David Kinnaird of ‘Ghost Walks Stirling’ fame, haunting folk music and

paranormal experiences are fascinating; and Nick Pope, who ran the Ministry of Defence UFO desk; as well as documentary film-makers and UK paranormal experts, from researchers who remain sceptical to those who are experiencers of ‘high ‘strangeness.’ Nick Kyle is also President of the Scottish Society for Psychical Research, a recognised Scottish charity that holds monthly talks on paranormal topics at Glasgow University and investigates reports of paranormal activity. He commented, “Poltergeist activity seems to be on the rise in the UK and has certainly proved to be persistently troublesome locally, with some families in the Glasgow area asking for our help because they are living in terror in

he will also speak at the Festival about two corroborated encounters that changed his life, called the Scole Experiments. Peter Broughan has always recognised that Scotland is a very paranormal place: “Our Festival celebrates that fact across the entire spectrum of strange & supernatural happenings. Whether you are a believer or a confirmed sceptic, a UFO watcher or a curious enquirer, a warlock or a witch, a cynical adult or a child who loves a good, scary story — there is something in the Festival for you!” Nick knows that overseas visitors to Scotland are very aware that Scotland is a mystical and magical country and they wonder why

Glasgow has had its share of saints, such as John Scott whose hunger fast of 106 days was verified, and sinners whose gory misdeeds may have spawned urban myths, such as the Gorbals Vampire hunt of 1954 and haunted locations, such as the Panoptican/Britannia Theatre in the Trongate. Scotland also has a greater cultural acceptance of second sight (Dr. Lorn Macintyre will speak on this at the Festival) and proportionately more spiritualist churches than England, not to mention world famous Scottish mediums, such as Helen Duncan from Callander and leading psychical researchers, such as the SSPR’s Founder President, the Late Professor Archie Roy. His case of a haunted house in Maxwell Park, Glasgow, that baffled the Police is a fascinating read. Even our national poet, Robert Burns was powerfully influenced by superstition and witchcraft and he had ghost-hunting friends, who investigated and solved the case of the ‘Beanscrofteil’ in Fenwick. There is much to find out about and celebrate in ‘spirited Scotland’ and the Festival is an excellent place to start. For more details paranormalscotland.com.

Colour Your Home Colours affect our lives in more ways than you think so having a good understanding of them can only enhance your home environment. Colours have been used specifically in the likes of: schools, hospitals and prisons to help bringabout an overall sense of and peace. In a study by “Scauss” in the late 70’s prisoners who were held in bright pink cells became less aggressive. The same experiment was carried out in Switzerland and called the “ Cool Down Pink” the psychologist reported that anger levels were reduced within a short space of time. The Telegraph reported - Police in Blenne have what they call “ Dank cells” used for arrests and drunken behaviour — a police spokes man said” It really seems to work. They quieten down and go to sleep much more quickly in a pink room” These are not the only areas where colour have been tested on areas but i’m going to take a look at how colour can influence areas in your own home. Lets start with the lounge, this is the place where you want to calm down and relax after a busy day or week and so you will want to add warming and soothing colours like golds, subtle yellows, and creams to keep you feeling cosy and nurtured. You can add in hints of orange to enhance things even more especially

in the winter months when we need that — inside cosy and protective feel. In the kitchen you want it to be stimulating colours to aid digestion and at the same time stimulate the conversation, So, reds are hot here but, they need to be balanced with something like white or beige to help the correct balance other wise it will be a tad manic. Shades of green also help the digestive flow and create a calm environment — you can enhance the flow of conversation by placing blue candles on the table. The bedroom is a place that you want subtle shades of pink, Cerise, lilacs and purples to aid sleep and promote passion and yet, still be relaxing. If you prefer it to be a place to go and chill out and be calm then you would be looking at lighter shades of green or blue. Children’s rooms need that splash of colour to help them with play and development but don’t go over the top. Perhaps choosing just a few colours will do the trick and stay away from screaming bright colours unless you fancy having an over active child on your hands.

Principles for a Spiritual Life

think that if they have time out it is wasted or that they are not being productive. This quiet time is a gift to you and your life in all areas, as it’s in the still quiet moments that you find the precious Aha moments that point you in the right direction of what to do next.

At our very core each and every one of us is a spiritual being – a soul that travels in a vehicle known as the body on this earthly plane. We arrived here as pure, innocent, child like beings, eager to discover what experiences await us. By following just a few simple principles, we can assist our journey and at the same time retain this spiritual essence.

9 Your soul is your higher self, it already knows what is good for you and what you need, it’s just waiting on you catching up and getting with the program so to speak. By aligning with it, you save yourself lots of time and energy going straight to what is right for you so, listening to the messages it has for you is important.

Here are nine principles to try

Affirmations to help you on your way

1 Always stay true to who you are no matter what. Don’t be tempted to do things just because others want you to, they are not here to walk your path – you are. Your spiritual footprint is not like any other and so, it is important to follow your heart and you won’t go far wrong.

We actually live life through affirmations although we may not know it. Whenever we say, “I’ll never be able to do that,” things start to go wrong and leave people wondering why they have never had any luck or things don’t go in their favour. By attaching to this we are re-affirming that this is the way it should be. It’s a form of programming of the self, ingraining this message into our deep sub-conscious.

2 Intuition is not something that only a chosen few own – you have that same access to it, even though is may be a muscle that you may not exercise very often, with a little practice you can soon change that and have it working as efficiently as anyone else’s. 3 Being authentic and original makes you a unique soul so remember, the soul functions on vibrational energy and as you transmit this energy out into the universe it attracts people to you from all walks of life. That means, the good, the bad and the ugly – your role is to stay with the highest vibration while at the same time, filtering out anything or anyone who does not fit in with your authentic being. 4 It doesn’t have to be hard or rocket science, in fact, anything but. Your energy is raised when your having fun, this is what makes your soul sing. Just because something is not hard does not mean it is not of value - it is of great value and worth. 5 Find ways to express yourself through creativity, imagination, art, music and anything that enables you to get your message out. We don’t all hear things through voice communication, as they say “ a picture paints a thousand words” so; in order to reach someone, expanding your creative skills might just get the message across. 6 Read interesting and inspirational books, choose amazing role models and don’t be afraid to thinking outside of the box to give the soul and your spiritual being all the help, nurturing and experiences it needs on the path. 7 Remember that its not the destination that is important, it is the journey you make and what you do while you are here that will leave a lasting imprint on those you love and people who are close to you. 8 Time in rest or contemplation is an amazing investment in yourself and your business. People

If you want to live life in alignment and on purpose using some affirmations could help you to retrain your conscious thoughts and give you back control or your own energy and soul purpose. Some affirmations to try Affirmations are very easy and to give you an idea of how they work let me give you some examples: Just for today I will remain happy and calm. I am attracting the right people into my life that are right for me. My financial situation is healthy. As I put love out into the world; I accept it back with gratitude. The universe will provide everything I need. My soul is experiencing positive experiences. These are just some examples, the golden rule is to keep it in present tense, stay positive and reinforce some of the key words. If possible, say your affirmations as often as you can but at least 3 times in the morning and again at night. This reinforces the new and allows you to build up strength in a new belief system. It will automatically become second nature to you and without thinking you will start to do this naturally every day. Affirmations may change according to where you are in life and what situations are occurring so, the ones that are right for you now, may not be the ones that you use in two months time It is important to be flexible and work with situations as life throws then up.

Feng Shui Tip -Show me the Money If you are looking to improve the cash flow into your home or office then you might like to try a couple of these tips out. First of all you need to locate the areas of the home that will enhance your finances. The area to look for is the South east part / corner of the lounge or kitchen. This area must be kept clean and tidy with nothing that is broken in it as this spells out issues and problems ahead. Then keeping a plant such as a money plant in this area along with a dish of coins is said to promote your money. The Chinese have long since promoted the idea that Red is a luck and prosperous colour and so keeping a red purse in this area while at home will also help. Outside of the front door a water feature, pond with gold fish or something along these lines is also said to enhance the Chi energy and flow of abundance through the home.

The Sleeping Prophet

Star Signs I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.

Joan Charles

Aries

Perhaps you need to stand your ground and make sure that others know exactly where they are with you. I sense that you are quite happy with the way things are so don’t go letting anyone else get in the way of that.

Taurus Children’s needs may have to come before your own as there could be important things that you need to attend at least find out about.

It’s all part of life and education and I sense that you will be proud of their efforts.

Gemini

At the moment you may be feeling a little lacklustre and at the same time getting frustrated with yourself give yourself a break and stop being so demanding. If the body needs rest then thats what you need to think about.

Cancer Some quiet reflection may give you a clearer insight into how you want to proceed with something that has been occupying your

thoughts. You may need to adopt the attitude of “ go with the flow” and see where things take you.

Leo I sense that you maybe grasping at straws and in fear that you are losing out in some way. This could begin to take over if you don’t get a hold of it, things are never as bad as they first seem so stay calm.

Virgo Changes and new challenges may be just what you have been looking for and my sense is that things are about to move in a new and exciting direction. Also, there is some news in connection with a birth.

Libra No one can accuse you of not seeing things from a different perspective as this is what you aim for in most things. You have the great

knack of being able to see things from an out of the box angle and taking a different spin on them.

Scorpio As we draw closer to the dark nights and the colder weather I feel this is maybe not what you look forward to. However, try

and look at this as a time when you can plan ahead and look at your next steps in terms of career.

Sagittarius A more spiritual approach to someone may show you that there is indeed a different side to them which you have not experienced.

Everyone deserves a chance to prove themselves and I sense this is what is ahead in this situation.

Capricorn

Woohoo, it looks like whatever you turn your hand to these days its all falling into place quite nicely and life is feeling good. Nothing stays the same forever and it feels like it’s your turn to experience good things.

Aquarius

You never do things by halves and why should now be any different. You may be receiving offers left, right and centre with regard to work and opportunities. You will need to choose carefully as you can’t do everything.

Pisces

Changes are afoot and they may come quickly and perhaps unexpectedly but that is not a bad thing from this you can grow in a new way and look at starting some things afresh. Challenging yet positive times lie ahead.

By Joan Charles Edgar Cayce was born in Kentucky and as a small boy at the age of around 6 or 7 years old he had been given spelling homework to do. While doing this he fell asleep and was able to see everything he was meant to do, when he awakened he could not only spell the word but, he knew the page and line the word was on in the book — something that would be helpful to us all. He was also able to connect with his late Grand Father in the spirit world along with other “ imaginary friends” so it would appear that this man came into the world already equipped to make spiritual and psychic connections. In his early twenties he lost his voice which was a mystery to the doctors however, a hypnotist gave him the suggestion to “ describe what was wrong” he told them that his vocal cords were paralysed and that this was due to nerve strain which needed more circulation to that area. The hypnotist suggested to him that this should return to normal — this was the start of how his life was to be for Cayce. This was Cayce’s very first reading in a state of altered consciousness, he went on to do one to save his wife’s life and his oldest sons sight and so he gave up his career in photography and began to use his gift for people, there are around 14,00 readings which are documented that he gave during his lifetime. These readings fell into categories such as health, Dream interpretation and past life. As clients came for sessions he would go into his altered state and his wife would conduct and guide the sessions — the clients would ask questions and his secretary would record the whole session. Cayce went on to establish the Association for Research and Enlightenment that still exists today or A.R.E as it is known and it has members all over the world. He was indeed one of the most documented and gifted psychics of the twenty-first century, 20th giving said “psychic readings, diagnosed illness and giving link to both past and future life. During his lifetime he produced may great predictions, here is a sample:

In 1938 he predicted “ A portion of the temple may yet to be revealed under the slime of ages and sea water near Bimini - Expect it in 1968 / 69 - not so far away” The Bimini Road was discovered in 1968. Cayce had indicated it was the “raising of Atlantis” and many believed that the Bimini Road was indeed a portion of Atlantic. The Death of two Presidents — in 1939 Cayce predicted the death of two presidents saying ”You are to have turmoil, you are to have strife between capital and labor. You are to have a division in your own land before you have the second of the presidents that will not live through his office… a mob rule.” In April 1945 President Franklin D. Roosevelt died in office. He went on “Unless there is more give and take, consideration of the excess profits from labor, there must be greater turmoil in the land.” President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas Texas in november 1963. 1929 brought the crash of the stock markets however, Cayce had already predicted this in 1924 when he tried to tell his clients about it and show them how to work round this but they did not listen and lost everything when this did actually come to pass. He foretold of the Great Depression and said it would be initiated through the crash of the stock market and that things would lift in 1933 which — they did. Not only did he predict for others, he also predicted his own Death, he had visions and warnings that he should stick to readings twice a day so that he did not drain his psychic abilities and that if he did not do this serious health issues would occur. He disregarded these warnings and went on with his readings — on the 1st of January 1945 he predicted that he would be buried in four more days. He died of a stroke on the the3rd of January 1945 and was buried bak in Kentucky where he came from. Check out www.edgarcayce.org

THE FULLARTON HOTEL: High-end food, high-end service…without the high-end price tag

THERE were two things that struck me straight away when I arrived at the Fullarton Park Hotel; the first being that the place was packed on a weekday afternoon and the second was that the entire location (because it comprises of not only a hotel and restaurant, but also a take-away and special occasion venue too) looks more like a high-end City Centre venue rather than an East End eatery. The similarity to expensive city restaurants doesn’t end there either – the presentation, the quality of the food and the service would be hard to beat no matter where you went. Looking at the menu, both my friend and I found it hard to pick just one starter. We eventually decide to order a portion of the breaded mushrooms and haggis fritters and share them between the two of us.

CARLUCCIO’S Glasgow is bringing some Halloween fun to their kitchen this November, with their children’s biscuit decorating classes.

My Chicken Breast Caprice was a monster portion, and even after a few attempts, I couldn’t finish the whole thing (not for lack of trying). The tasty chicken breast was topped with slices of mozzarella, fresh tomato and served on a massive pile of herby mash potato (this is truly delicious) topped with a creamy tomato and basil sauce.

With those gone (neither lasted long), we ordered our mains – a traditional Steak and Ale Pie and the Chicken Breast Caprice.

Despite being full after the first two courses, our waiter somehow managed to convince us we had enough room for dessert (the staff also knew a lot about the menu, which is always a plus). Sticky Toffee pudding is pretty standard (and often disappointing) when it comes to pub and restaurant menus, but I decided to give the Fullarton’s version a go. Really rich, with a great toffee sauce and gorgeous texture, this is definitely worth a try – almost for the beautiful presentation alone. My friend went for the Hot Chocolate and Walnut Brownie – which he assured me tasted equally as delicious.

As with the starters, they arrived quickly and were good looking in terms of presentation and portion size. The steak pie had an amazingly tasty puff pastry top – crispy on the outside and soft on the inside (just how it’s supposed to be) and the meat was tenderly, melt-in-the-mouth-style cooked. The only

All in all, the Fullarton Hotel is a really great option if you’re looking for somewhere with a high-end feel without the jaw-dropping bill at the end of the night – and you’ll leave feeling just as satisfied as if you’d spent a fortune. I reckon that’s a pretty good bargain. By Fiona McNicol

When we ordered, we were served quickly and the staff couldn’t have been friendlier. What’s more, they seem completely unfazed by how busy the place was – there was no stress or decrease in quality of service, despite running about between tables. Our starters arrived quickly and were pretty much perfectly presented; the mushrooms with a garlic and onion dip and the haggis fritters with a delicious whisky sauce.

THE BIG BEAUTY REVIEW

WHITE gleaming Hollywood teeth are something almost everyone desires, aren’t they? It is certainly on my wish list. However, having sensitive teeth has stopped me having them bleached professionally. Smoking, drinking red wine and coffee can have a huge effect on teeth and, with coffee being my only vice out of the three, my teeth aren’t too bad, but they’re not paper-white either. I found out about BlanX from their TV ads. BlanX say: “The light reactive formula removes bacteria, cleans and continues to whiten your teeth all day long. The more you smile, the whiter your teeth will get”

After hearing this I was very intrigued and I was sent some of the BlanX White Shock collection to try. I have been using the products for around two months and feel I have been using it for long enough to give a justified review. Here’s what I thought… BlanX White Shock with LED Accelerator with Actilux When I first took this out the box, I was intrigued. Inside the box was a 50ml tube of BlanX White Shock toothpaste and another little box with a LED Accelerator lid that screws on top of the toothpaste. This BlanX White Shock toothpaste comes with LED accelerator for a more intense whitening action. The LED lid lights up each time you use BlanX White Shock, activating the paste as soon as it comes out of the tube onto the toothbrush. Thanks to the specially designed LED light, Actilux’s whitening action is multiplied. I used this toothpaste twice every day.

Now this was interesting. Similar to the White Shock toothpaste, this is an intensive treatment which you activate using an LED mouth guard type thing. With this, you brush it on like normal toothpaste, and then hold the mouth guard between your lips so it is shining on your teeth for at least a minute.

(BlanX White Shock with LED Accelerator, £7.50

I used this every other day, usually at night when I had more time. I found the Bite quite fun and it was comfortable to hold. I dribbled a little the first time I used it but I soon got used to it.

BlanX White Shock Treatment with LED bite with Actilux, £15.99

BlanX White Shock Mouthwash with Actilux.

BlanX White Shock Mouthwash with Actilux, £5.50

The ‘only light activated Whitening Mouthwash’, I was pretty skeptical about a whitening mouthwash, and because I used it alongside the other two products I’m not sure how powerful it would be using on its own, but I have to admit it is a pretty good mouthwash. I find it stronger than other super strong mouthwashes I have used and left my mouth feeling squeaky clean and minty fresh.

All available from Boots)

My verdict… Overall, the LED lights are a fun gimmick and my teeth are a little bit whiter but I don’t see a great difference. However, for a non-peroxide product and for the price I think it’s a good bargain. It’s a product you can use every day and won’t harm your teeth. Refills can also be bought to go with the lights. With reports of toothpastes with baking soda as being harmful to your teeth, this is a good option and I will continue to purchase BlanX while I pluck up the courage to have my teeth whitened professionally.

group’s usual standards, with some Scottish twists thrown in for good measure. A selection of goodies, including beautiful Miller Harris toiletries, fluffy bathrooms and chocolates were the type of touches you’d expect from this level of hotel.

Arriving at the Fairmont, we were greeted by the impeccable reception staff in the grand entrance atrium, which holds five of the hotels six restaurants and the beautifully designed signature spa.

After taking a quick soak in the huge bath (thanks to the “Bath Butler” service, you can order anything you would like to make your soak more special – including champagne, of course) we began the difficult task of choosing which of the six restaurants to make a reservation in. We’d heard excellent things about their Italian eatery - La Cucina, and my friend (a gold fanatic) was keen to try the Clubhouse, but in the end we were won over by the menu and relaxed atmosphere of the Rock and Spindle.

Our suite, an impressively stylish and spacious top floor space, had a stunning view over St Andrews Bay and the hotel’s Clubhouse, perched on the edge of the cliff. For anyone who has stayed at a Fairmont Hotel before, the simple yet luxurious décor lives up to the hotel

If the food menu was excellent, the drink selection was even better, with a huge choice of classic and signature cocktails – including an entire page dedicated to Grey Goose Vodka character drinks (golfers like their Grey Goose, apparently). One in particular, called ‘Grey is the New Black’ caught our eye and proved to be a favourite over the course of the weekend. A combination of Grey Goose, Le Citron, Midori and orange liqueur, this addictive cocktail is amazingly refreshing… but you definitely won’t be saying the same thing about your head in the morning. The food was delicious, with portions on the overly generous side. My friend went for classic Haddock and Chips which, as he put it, “tasted like it had just been caught”. I choose the Beef Flautas – which were just on the right side of crispy.

The following morning, after eventually dragging ourselves out of the enormously comfy king-sized bed, I headed to the Spa, where my 10am Travel Recovery Massage had been booked. The 60 minute treatment, including a back, legs, feet, head and special ‘Blackberry Hands’ (for those of us who have to type and text for a living) massage, left me so relaxed I had to be coaxed out of the treatment room – and only because the masseur promised that the pool, sauna and Jacuzzi were equally as decadent. The feeling of complete relaxation and a holiday (albeit, a short one) away from real life pretty much sums up our stay at the Fairmont – the downside is, you’ll not want it to end.

What ever happened to Windows 9? MICROSOFT have both shocked and confused the technology world this past week when they revealed their latest operating system, and successor to the controversial Windows 8, the curiously titled Windows 10. So what happened to 9? Apparently, this version is so good that they just skipped 9 altogether, or so they’re saying. The likely real reason is unfortunately a bit boring. Programmers are claiming that confusion would inevitably arise in the operating code, as some from over 20 years ago will have been named in accordance with the 95 and 98 versions of Windows. So they’re just avoiding a Y2K-level disaster and skipping anything which would be labelled Windows 9 altogether. With that settled, let’s see what the fuss is all about. The Unofficial Parents Hand book: Trolling

IT used to be bad enough that parents would have to worry about their kids being bullied or picked on at school, but now an even uglier, often faceless, form of bullying has emerged – Trolling. For those who don’t know, Trolling is the term used to describe online harassment, most commonly in regards to comments and posts left on social media sites.

It’d be hard to imagine that anyone missed the story this week about the ‘McCann Twitter Troll’ – Brenda Leyland, who was found dead after a media storm surrounding her alleged trolling of Gerry and Kate McCann. Leyland, who used the Twitter username @sweepyface had posted comments such as saying the McCanns should suffer “for the rest of their miserable lives” and implied that they were in some way implicated in the disappearance of their daughter, Madeline. A little closer to home, Glasgow’s

Needy father and son team - Darren and Andrew Carnegie - were victim to trolling behaviour this week on Facebook. The pair, who we featured on our front page last week after the unbelievable response to their appeal to end poverty and collect food for their foodbank, had trouble with some Facebook users, who were posting harassing messages and comments, implying that the donated goods were being kept by Glasgow’s Needy.

Although these have been two widely publicised examples, trolling is happening every single day on the internet, and the level of teenagers subjected to this type of bullying is extremely high. According to internetmatters.org, there has been an 87% increase in the number of reported incidents of cyber bullying from 20122013. There is legislation in place to try and protect people from Trolling, such as the Communications Act 2011, Section 127 which defines, “sending, or causing to be sent, by means of a public electronic communications network, a message

‘Animals’ – Maroon 5 By Martina Salveta

‘ANIMALS’, the latest offering from Californian indie-rock band Maroon 5 is, without a doubt, controversial. Already causing a stir on social media, the video features front man Adam Levine as an eerie, bloodthirsty stalker and it’s come under heavy criticism from all angles – showing scenes of Levine rubbing himself with blood, while animal carcasses hang gruesomely on meat hooks in the background. Definitely not one for the faint hearted, the

track is in fact incredibly catchy, despite its seriously creepy lyrics (“Baby, I’m preying on you tonight, hunt you down eat you alive” for example, is hardly romantic). The song is, however, another undeniably good release from the band, which is guaranteed to be stuck in your head for hours (hopefully, the horror-movie-esque video won’t be too), whose other recent offerings include the more upbeat singles ‘Maps’ and ‘It Was Always You’.

WELL known for his previous bestselling novel ‘Atonement’, critically acclaimed author Ian McEwan’s latest offering ‘The Children Act’ tackles the hugely topical, and often heatedly contested, issues surrounding the UK’s family court system. great lyrics and beautiful melodies. The new track, ‘Old Man’, tells a touching story of someone learning from the older generation, from the stories they tell of past mistakes. The vocal on this is completely flawless and it’s easy to see why he’s been described as wearing his “heart on his sleeve” in the past when it comes to his balladry.

It’s a guaranteed grower, so do yourself a favour, put it on repeat and see if you can’t help but fall in love with the both the man and the song. Beginning his UK tour this month - kicking off in Brighton - Lockett is due to work his way up to Scotland at the end of October, playing Edinburgh on the 26th of October.

‘The Children Act’ – Ian McEwan

Fiona Maye, a leading high court judge, presiding over such cases in the family courts, must face battles both personal and professional when she is called to try an urgent case. Putting aside marital breakdown and a deep regret of her own childlessness, Fiona must pass a judgement on the case of Adam Henry, a 17 year old who is refusing lifesaving medical treatment for religious reasons which he shares with his devout parents.

After visiting Adam in hospital, Fiona’s subsequent judgement will have enormous consequences for them both.

‘Wanted on Voyage’ – George Ezra By Katrina McNicol SINGER-songwriter George Ezra’s debut album ‘Wanted on Voyage’ may not be a new release but deserves mention this week after reaching No 1 in the UK album charts this Sunday, a full 14 weeks on from its release date. Including top 10 singles ‘Budapest’ and ‘Blame It on Me’ it’s little surprise that Ezra’s popularity is both increasing and enduring. Listening to the album, you would be justified in mistaking 21-year-old Ezra for an older, more experienced artist as his booming and gritty bass voice entirely belies his youthful appearance.

Lyrically, Ezra stands out from the current plethora of acoustic-guitar playing singers gracing our charts with his tongue-in-cheek take on the so often rehashed romantic ballad. Single ‘Cassy-O’ might, by its title, be mistaken for a love song, but is in fact a lament on the passing of time and ‘Drawing Board’ graphically and humorously describes the revenge fantasy Ezra seems to have in mind for an exgirlfriend (which includes a scuba diving accident and a pillowcase full of man-eating snakes). ‘Budapest’, with its catchy guitar riffs and energetic chorus, has left listeners with the lyrics ‘For you, I’d

leave it all’ firmly stuck in their heads in the months since its release, and ‘Leaving it up to You’ superbly highlights Ezra’s range with a surprising falsetto chorus from the singer. Showing a darker side to Ezra’s song writing talents, ominously thundering ‘Did You Hear the Rain’ is an album highlight and perfectly completes this exciting and highly skilled first offering from Ezra.

Pulsar turns up the heat with sporty new DIG-T 190 engine

Study reveals four of ten drivers name their cars

FOUR out of ten drivers have given their car a name, according to the AA Driving School. Women are far more likely than men to have named a car, with half of those asked, saying they have done so compared to a third of men. Young drivers aged 18-24 were by far the most likely age group to say they had named a car with a massive 70% having done so, compared to just 30% of drivers over 65. The second most popular way for choosing their car’s name was by picking a name that ‘seemed to suit the car’s personality’. Other popular ways to decide amongst those who have named a car were basing it on the make or model of the car (16%), its colour (8%), picking a name they liked (8%) or naming it after a celebrity (1%), their partner (1%) or their children (1%).

SPORTY NEW ADDITION: The Nissan Pulsar DIG-T190

NISSAN is set to add a sporting twist to its new Pulsar range with the arrival of a third engine option - a 190PS 1.6 DIG-T.

is one of the most advanced in the sector, with a maximum torque output of 240Nm from 1,600rpm (up to 5,200rpm).

The new turbocharged petrol unit will join the Pulsar range from Spring 2015 and features a host of additional design and material upgrades that reflect its sporting potential.

While the 1.6 DIG-T engine has the firepower to match larger engines, its fuel consumption and emissions are of that of a much smaller unit - a major advantage of Nissan’s downsizing philosophy. Creating ‘more with less’ has been a Nissan priority for a number of years, and the Pulsar DIG-T 190 is the perfect example of why. The engine is fully EU6 compliant and features a host of technical innovations, including low friction technologies and cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation.

The sportiest and most powerful Pulsar to date further broadens Nissan’s appeal as the brand returns to the popular C-segment. Using the same design and engineering approach that has made Nissan the undisputed leader in the crossover market, the car highlights the brand’s passion for advanced technology and original design. Developing 190PS (140kW) at 5,600rpm, the 1.6 DIG-T engine

And it’s not just its performance that sets the Pulsar DIG-T 190 apart from the rest of the range. Nissan has developed a package of styling

features designed to complement the newcomer’s sporting nature. Available in Acenta and Tekna trim grades, all DIG-T 190 models feature a number of upgraded items as standard. These include; bespoke alloy wheels (17-inch as standard on Acenta and 18-inch for Tekna) finished in a diamond cut two-tone black and silver and a unique, sportier headlamp design which comes with a black finish to the bezel which provides a greater contrast to the chrome finished projector. At the rear, a chrome exhaust finisher is fitted as standard, further enhancing the sporting feel. The Nissan Pulsar DIG-T 190 will be available across European markets from Spring 2015.

AA-Populus research also revealed the most popular and unusual names people give their cars. Some of the most common names, or groups of

names, include: Names with ‘Blue’ in them e.g Bluebelle, Babe or Baby and names starting with ‘Little’ e.g Little Beauty. Some of the more unusual answers people gave when asked what the car was called included ‘The shed of dread’ and ‘Cactus Jack’. Jim Kirkwood, managing director of the AA Driving School, said: “Most drivers spend a lot of time in their cars and depend on them for the smooth running of their daily lives, so it’s perhaps not too surprising that they name them like another member of the family. “The fact that young drivers are so much more likely to have named a car is probably a reflection of what a huge impact passing your driving test has on your life. “Once you get a bit older, the novelty wears off a bit but to start with the joy of driving is very real. Having said that, overall the figures seem to suggest that this is a fun part of driving that stays with many drivers long after they have passed their test.”

Jules Bianchi in critical condition MARUSSIA driver Jules Bianchi, who crashed during the Japanese Grand Prix, remains in a critical but stable condition, it has been revealed.

The French driver underwent three hours of surgery on Sunday night after suffering a ‘severe’ head injury and has spent time in intensive care at the Mie University Hospital. Police will not be taking any action after examining the car and the crash scene, it has

been announced, but investigations will be carried out by the FIA and Marussia into what happened. It has been reported Professor Gerard Saillant has been in contact, who was involved in the initial treatment of Michael Schumacher when the German racer was in a coma after suffering serious head injuries while skiing in the French Alps.

City’s shiny new sponsorship deal

New car sales highest in a decade THE key registration plate change last month saw 425,861 new cars registered – a rise of 5.6% making it the biggest increase since September 2004.

September’s registrations – which, along with the March plate change month, account for a third of the year’s registrations – takes to yearto-date total up to 1,958,196 new cars. That’s up 9.1% on the same period last year. Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “September’s strong performance underlined the continuing robustness of the UK new car market, particularly in the context of last September’s bumper volumes. “Demand for the new 64-plate has been boosted by intensifying confidence in the UK economy, with consumers attracted by a wide range of exciting, increasingly fuel-efficient, new cars.” Speaking of the slowdown in growth, he said: “In the months since March – which saw an 18% jump in registrations – the growth has shown signs of levelling off as the market starts to find its natural running rate.” The Ford Fiesta was Britain’s best-selling new car in September again, a full 10,000 units clear

GLASGOW City celebrated their 8th consecutive SWPL title with the announcement of a ground breaking sponsorship deal with EG Chauffeur Hire. In the first of its kind in Scotland, EG Chauffeur Hire have partnered with the Scottish Champions as their official car sponsor, with the initial agreement in place for 12 months. The first Scottish women’s football team to have car sponsorship, City Club Manager Laura Montgomery says it is the icing on the cake for a great year so far. She said, “As everyone knows, we have secured the title with three games to spare. We have won the League Cup and are in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup as we aim to complete our third record breaking successive domestic treble. We are also of course into the knock out stages of the Champions League and have some huge games coming up. “Our sponsorship with EG Chauffeur Hire is hopefully another great indication of the rise of not just our club, but the women’s game in general as our gates increase and more and more

companies are looking to partner with us at the elite level of women’s sport. Our players are the ultimate role models for all young girls out there and you certainly won’t be able to miss them now as they drive about the City.” Commenting on the partnership EG Chauffeur Hire owner, Paul Kenny said, “We are delighted to offer this support to Glasgow City. We partnered with them for the UEFA Women’s Champions League qualification round and we were very happy with how that went and I was keen to do something more permanent and substantial. The car sponsorship works extremely well for both parties and we are thrilled to be backing one of the very top sports teams in Scotland. The club’s success has been phenomenal over recent years and winning their 8th consecutive SWPL title only a few days ago proves that. We hope with our help, their success can continue for many years to come.” EG Chauffeur Hire offer chauffeur services and wedding car hire throughout Scotland. www.egchauffeurhire.com

BEST SELLING: The hugely popular Ford Fiesta was Britain’s biggest selling car again this September

of the next-best Ford Focus. Indeed, if anything, the Fiesta’s leadership over all other cars is increasing – year to date, 106,930 Fiestas have been registered in the UK, with the second-placed Ford Focus well back on 67,015. The Volkswagen Golf hit a new high by taking third place in the new car registrations chart, which will be a worry for Vauxhall: Britain’s number two car manufacturer could only place fourth with the ageing Corsa and seventh with the fast-fading Astra.

In the confusing world of car finance, there is a new player with a unique vision. Let’s accept it, most of us require some sort of finance for our next car. There are a myriad of options available in this often confusing marketplace. Added to this is the financial crisis of recent years and it is becoming increasingly difficult for many good prospects to achieve the financing they require.

purchasing, servicing, preparation for sale and finance all under one roof, they have formed a slick operation in which all the decisions are in house. No broker fees has enabled them to focus on giving best value to the customer, without the need for people paying extra or hidden charges.

Brand New?

The flexibility of a relatively small company also means they can offer the unique feature whereby you can change or upgrade your car after just 15 months. This is just one of the reasons that over a third of their customers return and often recommend friends and family to their service.

Leasing a brand-new car may seem attractive, but the combination of the large outlay and having nothing to show for it at the end of two or three years puts many off. Others are tempted by companies and brokers offering attractive monthly rates but these usually prove unattainable, and if you are a family with children there is the considerable stress of added charges for any imperfections when the car is returned.

Second Hand? Many are tempted to finance a second hand car with a loan over 4 or 5 years. While the payments may seem affordable, unfortunately the loan lasts longer than the car. While you may convince yourself the price you paid was the one on the garage sticker, the true total with the interest and charges can be up to three times that.

The Solution To simplify this marketplace, Lease2Buy entered with a brandnew proposition in 2007. With many years of experience in the car rental sector, Lease2Buy sought to find a new way for people to purchase a nearly new car in a relatively short period of time. They focused their efforts on purchasing vehicles coming off corporate lease or motorbility with full service histories and relatively low mileage. These were then offered to people over a short period of 30 months, with deposits from just £295. This kept the total amount payable for the car in check while at the same time allowing people to own the car quickly. With thousands of satisfied customers and the turnover doubling each year, this has proved a winning combination. Lease2Buy’s ability to self finance is unique. By bringing the

In principal, Lease2Buy are able to help almost any prospective buyer who has the required deposit, and can demonstrate that the vehicle is affordable to them. This can include people on secure benefits and joint applications. While some in this market charge 50% plus in interest, Lease2Buy offer a typical rate of just 19.8% APR. Lease2Buy offer their services in any situation. Many customers are small business owners who appreciate the tax advantages of the system, and not having to provide 3 years accounts just to get a car! Others have very specific vehicle requirements, and will pay a deposit for a particular vehicle to be sourced. In fact a vast range of cars have been provided from city cars such the Fiat 500, and Hyundai i10, through to advanced hybrids, luxury saloons, and executive 4 x 4s. Whatever your requirements, you are dealing with a small friendly sales team rather than a anonymous finance company. Gordon who heads up sales says, “We are not interested in hard sell, our cars are there to see on our website and we let people come to us. They are in control throughout the process.” In a market place where is it increasingly rare to deal direct, it is refreshing to find a company with such a unique offering. From their base in Ayrshire on the west coast of Scotland, they also offer UK wide delivery and are delighted to have customers from Caithness to Cornwall.

Ex-Celtic boss Neil Lennon to fly to Saudi Arabia for Al Ittihad talks

Injury hit Rocks hope to bounce back after Surrey defeat Glasgow Rocks vs. London Lions. Emirates Arena Sunday 12th October, 5.00pm

FORMER Celtic manager Neil Lennon is set to fly to Saudi Arabia for talks over becoming the new manager of Al Ittihad. The Northern Irishman has been out of work since departing his role in charge of the Scottish champions at the end of the 2013/14 season.

SURREY UNITED: The Rocks Sterling Davis in action against Surrey at the weekend

DOMINANT play in the paint saw Surrey United finally open its victory count in the new season, as United defeated the visiting Rocks 97-76 at Surrey Sports Park.

The 42-year-old led the Hoops to three successive top flight titles as well as two Scottish Cup crowns but said he needed a fresh challenge. Lennon will now travel to the Arab state to hold discussions with club officials before deciding his next move. Al Ittihad are based in the city of Jeddah and play in the Saudi Professional League [SPL] at the 65,000 capacity King Abdullah Sports City Stadium.

Playing without the injured American big man Paul Egwuonwu and with Ali Fraser still out, the Rocks found it difficult to stop Surrey from scoring inside the paint. Despite solid longrange shooting, the Glasgow club found itself chasing the hosts for the

majority of the first half. United’s inside production allowed the home side to establish a 46-39 halftime lead, after finishing the second quarter on a 6-0 run. Kramer Knutson provided the hosts with a lethal presence inside the box, finishing the game with a huge double-double of 18 points and 18 rebounds. The team will be aiming to get healthy in time for the London Lions first round Cup fixture next Sunday at the Emirates Arena – get your tickets here.

CITY ON THE ATTACK: Rangers were unable to break the Champions

fourth and eighth games on his way to victory.

Eddie Wolecki Black said, “This is always the tough ones to play because this game was getting in the way. We have experienced it in the past when everyone’s eyes are fixed on the Champions League. But we had to respect the league and we put out a strong side and whilst it wasn’t a free flowing performance we certainly battled and made sure we got the 3 points. What is particularly pleasing is that as Champions even although we didn’t play well, we still ground out the win, and after having already won the title that is testament to the players.”

SCOTLAND’S Junior Boys and Girls are getting ready to compete in the inaugural North Sea Cup Tournament next month, on the 8-9th November, in Cardiff. An expansion of the Tri-Nations Tournament - which was re-established in Scotland in 2010

- the original competing nations of Scotland, Wales and Ireland will be joined this year by the national teams from Denmark. This tournament is another in a busy season for the National Squads at all levels. The Junior Men have recently returned from a tournament in Andorra.

Scotstoun capacity increased for remainder of season THE Glasgow Warriors have confirmed that the capacity of Scotstoun Stadium will be increased to around 7,000 following huge demand for tickets for the upcoming European Rugby Champions Cup match with Bath.

A new covered 864-seater west stand will be constructed and will be in place for the visit of the English Premiership side on Saturday 18 October. Tickets in this stand are available now from

www.glasgowwarriors.org and anyone who has purchased a standing ticket in the east terrace will be able to upgrade their ticket. Glasgow Warriors managing director Nathan Bombrys said: “We’ve already sold around 5,000 tickets for our European Rugby Champions Cup opener with Bath later this month. “With over 3,300 season ticket members this season – a record number for the club – and an increasing number of supporters attending individual games we’ve moved quickly to increase the capacity of the stadium.”

Treve wins second Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp

TREVE has won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp for the second year running.

The filly, trained by Criquette Head-Maarek, is the first horse since Alleged in 1978 to win consecutive runnings of Europe’s richest race.

Jockey Thierry Jarnet, back on board as replacement for Frankie Dettori, surged clear of runner-up Flintshire, with Taghrooda in third.

Treve was retired immediately after the race and will start a breeding career. The 11-1 winner had been written off in many quarters after three successive defeats, but an electric burst of pace saw her burst through to win by two lengths. Flintshire, for seven-time winning trainer Andre Fabre, ran creditably in second, as did the British-trained pair of Taghrooda (third) and Kingston Hill (fourth).

WINNER: Thierry Jarnet celebrates after steering Treve to victory in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp

Treve will now go to stud for Qatari owner Sheikh Joaan al Thani, of Al Shaqab Racing.

Dettori had some consolation later on when

he guided Olympic Glory, trained by Richard

Hannon, to a last-to-first success in the Prix de la Foret.

Scotland v Georgia European Championship Qualifier Saturday 11th October Kick-off: 17:00, Ibrox Stadium

STEVEN Fletcher’s double in Sunderland’s win over stoke last weekend, ending the strikers 10-month goal drought, may have come just in time to earn him a place for Scotland’s Euro 2016 qualifier with Georgia on Saturday. The 27-year-old won his 15th cap last month, as Scotland opened their Euro campaign against Germany with a 2-1 defeat. There are reportedly no new injury problems

NO DOUBT FROM BAZ: Gordon Strachan (pictured) will be hoping Barry Ferguson’s prediction comes true this Saturday at Ibrox

for the squad, since Burnley’s Matt Gilks was called in last week after Hull City goalkeeper Allan McGregor was ruled out due to a shoulder problem. Skipper Scott Brown is sure to start in midfield, having missed the loss in Germany through injury, and fit-again Andy Robertson may replace Steven Whittaker at left-back. Charlie Mulgrew, who played in Dortmund, is recovering from injury, while Darren Fletcher and Barry Bannan have been used sparingly by Manchester United and Crystal Palace in recent

weeks and could find their positions under threat. Stevie May and Ryan Gauld are the new faces in Strachan’s squad and McGhee has been impressed by the Sheffield Wednesday striker and Sporting Lisbon midfielder. There’s been support for the team throughout the week, with former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson telling The Scotsman he has “no doubt” that Scotland will defeat Georgia on his old stomping ground. Now the player-manager of Clyde, Ferguson believes the general positivity around the national squad will be

a big advantage for Scotland when they host Georgia at Ibrox on Saturday. Former Scotland boss, Craig Brown, reportedly said he doesn’t envy the decision facing Gordon Strachan over which goalkeeper to select for Saturday’s match. With McGregor unavailable, David Marshall started the game against Germany and is favourite to retain his place for the Georgia clash. However, Craig Gordon has been in outstanding form since for Celtic this season.
