7th November - 13th November 2014 • Glasgow City News 3 continued from front page With music fans attending from across Europe and a potential worldwide audience of 500 million people, tourism leaders hope to use the exposure to attract more visitors to the country. The EMAs were last held in Scotland in Edinburgh in 2003 and generated an economic impact of £8.9 million, and it is hoped the event will be worth £10 million this time. VisitScotland chairman Mike Cantlay said: “We thought 2014 couldn’t get any better with the huge successes of the Commonwealth Games, Ryder Cup and Homecoming, but here we are again, on the tip of another major, exciting, global spectacle. “MTV is a world renowned brand, which has produced fantastic entertainment for decades, and to have the EMAs here in Glasgow at the stunning SSE Hydro is incredible. “The show is being beamed to over 500 million homes across the world which gives us a once in a lifetime

This truly is an extraordinary time for our country, so let’s take to the stage once more and create that fantastic Scottish welcome.” According to figures, around 26,000 people travel to Scotland each year to attend a live music event, bringing in around £17 million to the country. Glasgow City Council leader Gordon Matheson said: “In addition to delivering a significant boost to our economy - providing a base on which local businesses, creative industries and the tourism sector can capitalise - it will also position Glasgow alongside its key competitors, and previous host cities, including Paris, London, Milan, Barcelona, Rome, Berlin and Madrid. “Hosting the MTV EMAs in the same year that we have delivered the best ever Commonwealth Games and BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend will cement Glasgow’s position as a vibrant, dynamic destination with great people, a phenomenal music scene and a hugely ambitious events industry.”
Salmond saved from the fire
OFFENSIVE: A photograph of one of the effigies was tweeted by East Sussex County Council
POLICE are investigating a complaint about effigies of Alex Salmond which were due to have been burnt at bonfire celebrations in an English town. The two effigies of the Scottish first minister were withdrawn from the celebrations in Lewes after a storm of protest on social media. Thousands of people attended the bonfire event in the East Sussex town. The Waterloo Bonfire Society, which produced one of the models, said it had “no wish or intention to offend”. A Sussex Police statement said: “We are aware of the portrayal of Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond as an effigy at the 2014 Lewes Bonfire event and acknowledge that concerns have been raised.
STAR-STUDDED: Artists due to appear in Glasgow this weekend include singer Ed Sheeran (pictured) and Scottish superstar DJ Calvin Harris.
“Whilst we accept there is a long tradition of creating effigies of highprofile individuals in politics, sport, the media, etc, a complaint has nevertheless been received and will be investigated.”
afternoon when East Sussex County Council tweeted a picture of one of the effigies of Mr Salmond, complete with a “Yes” badge, a sign saying “45%” and the Loch Ness monster looking over his shoulder. Plans by residents of a Sussex market town to burn an effigy of First Minister Alex Salmond at a Bonfire Night party have been scrapped at the 11th hour. They faced an immediate backlash on Twitter with one user responding: “Can you imagine the uproar amongst Better Together campaigners had Yes supporters burned an effigy of David Cameron?” On Wednesday night around 9pm, Sussex Police tweeted: “For those enquiring we have been advised that there won’t be any burning of the Alex Salmond effigies this evening in Lewes.” The event is said to be one of the largest bonfire celebrations in the UK, with 45,000 people attending.

Cathedral Cleric presented with Loving Cup THE spiritual leader of Glasgow Cathedral was honoured for his contribution to civic life by Glasgow’s First Citizen, Lord Provost Sadie Docherty last Friday (31st October), at the City Chambers. The Loving Cup is one of the city’s highest honours and is presented to any person or group who have brought distinction and honour to Glasgow. Blues musician, singer and songwriter Frankie Miller, Team Scotland Glasgow 2014 medallists and Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive David Grevemberg were amongst others who received Lord Provost’s Awards. Reverend Dr Laurence Whitley was honoured for his years of pastoral service to the city presiding at countless civic events like Remembrance Sunday and this year’s poignant First World War Centenary ceremony in George Square, attended by heads of state and members of the Commonwealth to mark the start of the First World War. A special service just for children
was also led by Dr Whitley at the Cathedral, to allow them to contemplate the Great War.
Dr Whitley was also praised for the comfort he gave to those directly caught up in the Clutha disaster including survivors and staff who received emergency attention. Dr Whitley as police chaplain, visited the crash scene and the grieving, injured and shocked who were housed in emergency centres across the city. He also presided at a special service at the Cathedral, in the aftermath of the helicopter disaster, attended by leading politicians, emergency services and NHS personnel as well as those directly affected. His moving sermon was relayed across the world.

The Deadline app uses algorithms used by insurers together with the Apple iPhone health tracking capabilities - to predict when you’ll draw your last breath. After completing a short quiz about your lifestyle, the app taps into the data which newer iPhones now record - such as number of steps taken each days and flights of stairs climbed.

Firefighters have busy Bonfire Night in the West FIREFIGHTERS in Scotland were kept busy on Wednesday, responding to over 1100 incidents throughout the country as revellers celebrated bonfire night.
Scots attended fireworks displays and bonfires across the country, with thousands enjoying gatherings in Glasgow and Edinburgh. The majority of the incidents reported were in the west of the country, where 548 incidents were reported between 4pm and midnight. Assistant Chief Officer Dave Boyle said: “While it will take time to establish the full picture it’s clear we have seen a significant number of incidents requiring the attendance of our crews across Scotland.
“Firefighters responded to 999 calls from the Borders to the Western Isles, many of which related to bonfires that were unsupervised or endangered homes and other buildings.
“It’s important to remember however that our crews were not only involved in bonfire-related activities, they also responded to emergencies including building fires and road traffic collisions. “As always their professionalism and specialist skills were available and put into practice wherever they were needed to protect the public.”
The fireworks at Glasgow Green was watched by an estimated 50,000 people, and passed off without major incident.

On-line petition system signals change for Glasgow GLASGOW residents, organisations and businesses are being urged to help bring about positive change in in the city through a new on-line petition system operated by Glasgow City Council.
Billy’s lasting legacy BILLY Connolly can add another location to the list of Glasgow locations that hold his legacy – the SEE Hydro. A quote made by Connolly is the latest permanent installation at Glasgow’s home of live entertainment. “Glasgow Celebrates the Living” – a statement made by Billy during the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games - has been recreated in neon lights above the main stage door entrance to the arena. The new signage is one of a series of Scottish and Glasgow themed artworks which have been curated and installed to give artists and their production staff some Glasgow personality and enhanced experience when playing the venue. Billy was happy to pop over to see the new installation as he ended his run of sell out shows at the SECC Clyde Auditorium. Sean Murray, Head of Marketing said: “We were delighted that Billy was able to come along to see our latest installation at the SSE Hydro. “The context of Billy’s quote is about highlighting to the major international talent who play the venue that Glasgow loves live events and live music and as a performer you are going to have a great night”.

LEGACY OF A LEGEND: Billy Connolly popped along to the Hydro to see his quote immortalised
The new system, hosted at www.glasgow.gov.uk/petitions , has been launched to make the council’s Public Petitions and General Purposes Policy Development Committee as accessible as possible for potential petitioners. Just twenty-five signatures of support are required to allow councillors to consider a petition that relates to services or issues provided by the council so long as certain other criteria are fulfilled. It is hoped the on-line petitions system will encourage people in Glasgow to get more involved in the democratic process and to shape the work of the council. Councillor Frank Docherty, Chair of the Public Petitions and General Purposes Policy Development Committee, believes the petitions system represents a great opportunity for people to take action and help to improve their community. Councillor Docherty said: “It is very true that people make Glasgow and the on-line petition system is a chance for people to make Glasgow better. Knowing the people of Glasgow I have little doubt there will be a million and one ideas out there about what could be done to improve the city.
“A valid petition needs just twenty five signatures for an issue to be heard by councillors and we want to hear the ideas that people have about Glasgow and the council. We want people to come forward and we want people to have their say about the things that they think need to change. “If people get involved and make their case then, where ever possible, we can start to take those ideas forward. Having an on-line petition should make it much easier for people to take action about the things that matter to them.” The introduction of on-line petitions was recommended in a review of the petitions system, which has also led to other changes to the overall process. Most notably council decisions can now be challenged after six months rather than twelve months, as was the case under the previous arrangements. Full details of the rules for submitting a petition can be found at www.glasgow.gov.uk/ petitions . On-line petitioners are required to register on the petitions page and their proposals will be checked to ensure they are a matter for the council before potential signatories can add their support. Petitions will continue to be accepted in writing or by email. Petitions previously raised with the council covered issues such as kinship care, planning rules and big supermarkets, restoring Tollcross Park Winter Gardens and traffic calming measures in the Knightswood area.

Winter warmer for Glasgow’s elderly
FOR the fourth year running, Glasgow City Council is offering every resident aged 80 and over money to help heat their homes during the winter. Glasgow’s older citizens can apply for their £100 Affordable Warmth Dividend.
The affordable warmth dividend was introduced in 2011 by Council Leader Gordon Matheson as part of the council’s efforts to eradicate fuel poverty in the city. Since then, around 44,000 of Glasgow’s most vulnerable elderly citizens have taken up the offer and received the £100 payment. Councillor Gordon Matheson said: “Too many Glaswegians struggle to heat their homes adequately and our elderly citizens are most at risk.
“It is important to be prepared for the changing weather and I urge anyone who thinks they might be eligible for the affordable warmth dividend to get in touch and apply to the council.”

The organisations campaign coordinator, Kirsty Henderson, has issued a letter to Glasgow City Council Leader Gordon Matheson, encouraging him to put the plans on ice this winter.

“Please make the humane decision not to use live animals at this event and also make a formal commitment to avoiding future events that promote the mistreatment of animals.”

Clutha fund closes with over £500k to help families

ORGANISERS of the fund set up to help survivors and families of victims of the Clutha tragedy have revealed the amount raised in donations.
The fund, which was launched by Glasgow Lord Provost Sadie Docherty in the days after a police helicopter crashed into the city centre pub on November 29 last year killing 10 people, has closed with just over £500,00. The total amount has now been handed over. The largest single donation was more than £31,000 from sales of the Clutha Sessions album. It features contributions from musicians who played in the venue. When the fund was set up, trustees agreed categories which identified how and to what extent each individual was affected to ensure a fair and consistent approach. WOMEN who have suffered at the hands of human traffickers are set to benefit from a cash boost after The Community Safety Glasgow - TARA Service (Trafficking Awareness Raising Alliance) was awarded £2,000 by a Scottish charity. The Tartan Ribbon Fund was founded by Scottish Soroptimists Brenda Kay and Janice Wilson in 2010. Its primary function is to raise funds for organisations throughout Scotland which are dedicated to helping vulnerable women and children. TARA provides support to women who have fallen victim to traffickers for the purposes of commercial sexual exploitation. Bronagh Andrew, Assistant Operations Manager for The TARA Project, said: “This £2,000 donation from the Tartan Ribbon Fund means a great deal. It will help us to improve the lives of some of the most vulnerable and mistreated
women in society. “As part of our support, we provide women with things like safe accommodation, a mobile phone, clothing, basic toiletries, advocacy and access to services such as counselling, legal advice and healthcare. This money will be used to supplement our existing support to women in the form of winter clothes, books for college courses and day trips away. “We are very fortunate to be able to work with the Tartan Ribbon Fund and we’re extremely grateful for their hard work and generosity.” Brenda Kay, trustee at the Tartan Ribbon Fund, said: “Some members of the TARA team very kindly gave up their time earlier this year to speak at our fourth annual Tartan Ribbon Fund fundraising lunch. This gave our members an invaluable insight into the important work that TARA does to help vulnerable women. Not only that, we also heard the

By Chloe McGhee
A YOUNG entrepreneur and graduate of the Peter Jones Academy at Glasgow Kelvin College was delighted to be selected, along with a handful of other successful and impressive young entrepreneurs, to attend a session at Downing Street with the Prime Minister’s Enterprise Adviser, Daniel Korski.
The session at Downing Street with Daniel Korski and the other guests examined ways in which government can support and help develop young entrepreneurs who contribute so much to the economy. Serign feels he really benefited from the time spent in the session and he was keen to explore ways to provide practical and financial support for business start-ups.
Through the PJAand then Entrepreneurial Spark (part of the Gazelle programme) Serign Sanneh worked hard to set up his own online business supplying AfroCaribbean goods.

free treatment clinic for homeless dogs
POLICE in Partick are appealing for the assistance of the media and public in 24-yearold Heather Campbell, who has been missing since Halloween.
Heather, of Garscube Road, Maryhill, was seen leaving her home around 8.15pm on Friday 31st of October. There has been a reported sighting of her by an acquaintance getting off a bus in Maryhill Road, at 1.20pm on Sunday 2nd November. Heather is described as white, 5ft 2 in height, of slim build, has brown hair worn in a ponytail. When she was seen on Halloween, she was wearing a black jacket, blue jeans and white training shoes and was carrying a black handbag. It is not known if these are the same clothes she was wearing on Sunday.
VET students at Glasgow University have set up the first free preventative treatment clinic for homeless dogs in Glasgow.
Sergeant Keith Connor, Partick Police Office, said earlier this week: “It is very much out of character for Heather to not be in touch with her friends and family. She went missing on Halloween night but was seen by someone who knows her getting off a bus near to McDonald’s on Maryhill Road, across from Tesco on Sunday afternoon. However, since then, despite extensive enquiries by officers, including specialist search officers, there have been no further sightings of her.

The clinic uses both Facebook
(Facebook.com/trustypaws) and Twitter (@trusty_paws) as social platforms to inform the community of what they need in the form of their Amazon wish list and second hand donations. The wish list is diligently checked and changed according to supplies collected and regularly updates accordingly via their Facebook and Twitter accounts. DRUG RECOVERY: Over £8000 worth of drugs were recovered from the address in Angle Park Terrace in Edinburgh
AN ongoing operation in Edinburgh has marked a monthlong enforcement campaign with a large drugs recovery.
A NEW report from a spending watchdog has warned that a lack of cash for flood defences is increasing the risk of serious problems in the UK should areas be hit by winter storms. The National Audit Office (NAO) has said that half of the country’s flood defences - more than 1,300 schemes - are only being maintained to a “minimal level”. The Government insists there has been a real-term increase in flood defence funding, with Whitehall
making an extra £270m available following the winter storms last year, which saw widespread flooding during the wettest winter on record, including an additional £35m in each of the next two years for maintaining defences. Without the extra cash from the Government following the winter floods, total funding for flood protection has fallen by 10% since 2010. The winter storms flooded 7,700 homes and 3,200 commercial properties, as well as cutting off power to hundreds of thousands more households.

‘Operation Wolf’ is a communitypolicing initiative aimed at tackling the specific crimes and issues affecting the public across the Capital. On Wednesday, officers began a month of targeted action by carrying out an intelligence-led search of a property in Angle Park Terrace. As a result, a cannabis cultivation was seized from inside along with a quantity of herbal cannabis, which was ready for distribution, with a value of around £8,400. Over £1,300 in cash was also removed from the address. Superintendent Matt Richards said: “Op Wolf continues to target all serious crimes, but particularly those that matter to local communities. Yesterday’s activity concentrated on
organised criminality, and specifically those dealing drugs. “Seizing such a sizeable quantity of drugs and cash makes a big dent in the income and lifestyle of those who would potentially re-invest the money in more illicit materials and illegal activity. “We have listened to local concerns about drug dealing and are concentrating our Op Wolf efforts on the emergence of public safety issues linked to both illegal substances and the increasing misuse of new psychoactive substances. “The success of Operation Wolf is based on the intelligence we receive from our communities and I would urge anyone with information relating to ongoing criminal activity in their area is asked to contact us on 101 or make an anonymous report via the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Large swathes of Syria and Iraq are currently under the control of IS extremists. British forces were pulled out of Iraq in 2011, eight years after the mission that brought down Saddam Hussein. A dozen British trainers had already been deployed last month to work with Kurdish forces in the northern city of Erbil. The UK launched its first air strikes against IS targets in Iraq on 30 September - four days after Parliament approved military action. Pressure to provide more support to new Iraqi prime minister Haider alAbadi to reclaim territory in the north and west has been growing. The US has agreed to send around 500 soldiers to Iraq and elsewhere in the region, with the aim of retraining the Iraqi army. The UK is also preparing to increase the number of drones it is using in the region to provide further intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assistance to Iraqi forces.

THE presumptive Republican leader of the US Senate has vowed to “work together” with President Barack Obama on issues where they can agree. TWO DEAD: The teenagers were killed during shelling near Donetsk Airport in Ukraine
TWO teenagers were killed by shelling as they played football on a school field in Donetsk, Ukraine, earlier this week. It is reported that up to four other people were wounded in the missile strike. Local news suggested the incident happened about 2-3km (1-1.5 miles) from Donetsk airport, where separatists have been fighting to seize control from government forces. Clashes have continued despite a ceasefire declared on the 5th of September.
A Donetsk city council statement said: “As a result of a missile strike from the conflict zone two teenagers were killed and a further three were injured on a school sports field.” The deaths came as Vladimir Putin expressed concern that the ceasefire had failed to end a civil war that has killed more than 4,000 people mainly civilians - since February. RIA news agency quoted the Russian President as saying: “Despite the Minsk agreements, firing on peaceful cities continues and civilians are still dying,”
The Ukrainian leadership and proRussian separatists blame each other for truce violations. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she believes the West should consider adding Ukraine’s rebel leaders to sanction lists after they held disputed elections on Sunday.

ARRESTED: Iguala Mayor Jose Luis Abarca, and his wife, Maria de los Angeles Pineda
A MEXICAN mayor and his wife, dubbed “the imperial couple” by local media, have been taken into custody in connection with the mass disappearance of 43 students. Iguala Mayor Jose Luis Abarca, and his wife, Maria de los Angeles Pineda, were detained early on Tuesday morning at a house in Mexico. Their capture, which Mexican Federal Police spokesman Jose Ramon Salinas reported on his Twitter account, signals a major milestone in the high-profile case. “I hope that this detention contributes in a decisive way to solving the investigation that the Attorney General’s Office is conducting,” Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said as he praised authorities
for the arrests Tuesday. There is still no word on the location or status of the missing students, who are mostly men in their 20s, studying to become teachers at college in Ayotzinpa. The group went missing on September 26th, as they travelled to nearby Iguala to take part in a protest. Authorities have arrested around 60 suspects, but the arrest of the mayor and his wife is a massive turning point in the case. Mark Billington – Billington’s of Lenzie
Each week we focus on a Glasgow business, organisation or professional, and quiz them on their success, future plans and favourite things about the city…
A visit from Katy Truss of Fabulous Food Finds, Billingtons of Lenzie won the coveted title of Glasgow’s Best Deli
Q. Who and what is Billington’s of Lenzie? A. Billington’s of Lenzie is a licensed artisan Deli, specialising in locally sourced as well as far away products, with a huge emphasis on the local community needs and wants, run by myself, and my wife Sue Billington. Sue is a keen baker and foodie, and I’m a qualified Programme Provider for (WSET) Wines & Spirits Education Trust. Together have over 40 years combined knowledge of food and drink.
Q. How did Billington’s of Lenzie begin? A. The site where Billington’s now
sits lay empty for two years, in our local town of Lenzie. We passed the site on a daily basis and were amazed that no one had taken the shop on. I kept thinking a specialised deli would work here, but didn’t have the guts to go for it! I finally negotiated a good deal and, with family support for funding, went for it and opened two years ago.
Q. What was the most difficult aspect of setting up your own company? A. Having been at the helm of restaurants, bars and wine shops in Glasgow for many years, I was used to setting up and running new ventures, but always with other people’s money! Managing a limited cash flow and fitting out our shop was a challenge, as well as all the hidden costs of setting a company up, including legal and professional fees.
Q. What advice would you Year in 2014 – which makes all the give to someone thinking hard work worth it! about starting their Q. What’s next for own business? Billington’s of Lenzie? A. Understanding the location is the key I think. Ask local people and traders lots of questions to get a feel of the area. Remember it takes time to establish any business and very hard work, so be sure you have a real commitment and passion for your business before you start.
Q. What’s been the biggest achievement for Billington’s of Lenzie so far? A. Winning the title of Glasgow’s Best Deli for two consecutive years, in our first two years of being open, is testimony to all the team’s hard work. We were also shortlisted for Best Deli in Scotland and Retail Outlet of the

Cote Brasserie to open in Glasgow
CELEBRITY CHEF: TV chef, Brian Turner, visited City of Glasgow College recently to oversee the event.
GLASGOW students were given the recipe for success by celebrity TV chef Brian Turner, when he visited City of Glasgow College on 28th October. The event, held at the college’s Scholars Restaurant, saw 60 local business people, food and drink contacts and college staff attend a three-course lunch prepared and served by students, and overseen by the chef. In his role as an ambassador for Clydesdale Bank, Brian supported students in the kitchen and offered advice as they rose to the challenge of delivering the meal. Around 40 students took part in the exercise, with half based in the kitchen and the other half responsible for front of house duties. The menu, which featured West coast scallop pudding, noisette of lamb stuffed with chicken and wild mushroom and white chocolate and raspberry trifle, was specially created by Brian to showcase Scotland’s quality produce. It was also designed to help improve students’ technical skills. Brian said: “I wish that I’d had the opportunity to work alongside people with experience in the
industry when I was training. It helps students to understand more about the realities of working in a busy restaurant environment. “I hope that I can encourage the students by helping them to work together as a team to create something they can be really proud of.” Willie McCurrach, curriculum head for food at City of Glasgow College, said: “To get to cook with Brian Turner is a fantastic opportunity for our students. Working with a famous chef and TV personality will enable them to aspire to achieve more. “Brian has supported young chefs through his work with Springboard’s Future Chef Competitions for more than 20 years.” Stuart McCallum, head of food and drink for Clydesdale Bank in Scotland, said: “Clydesdale Bank is a proud supporter of Scotland’s food and drink industry and we’re pleased to be contributing to the development of its future workforce.”

FRENCH CLASS: Cote will open its first Scottish restaurant in Glasgow next year
GLASGOW is set to receive a touch of French class next year, with plans well underway for the launch of a new Parisian-style bistro. Cote Brasserie plans to open its first Scottish restaurant on West Nile Street sometime next summer, with the opening of another restaurant planned for Edinburgh later that year. The French restaurant chain says the many famous bistros of Paris inspire both their food and the interiors, and are “dedicated to serving authentic classic brasserie dishes with a modern twist, using high quality produce at great prices.”
When the new restaurant opens next year, Glasgow food-lovers can expect to find some of Cote’s classics, including steak frites, corn-fed chicken from rural Brittany and tuna Niçoise, with desserts such as crème brûlee and other much–loved house specialities. Cote has applied to set up shop in the lot formerly occupied by retailers Long Tall Sally. The plans are still being processed, and are viewable on Glasgow City Council’s website. Cote currently has restaurants at various locations throughout England and Wales.

We’ve been looking for something that makes our skin look and feel gorgeous, whether you’re going bare minimal with make-up or the full hog…and Estee Lauder’s offering is definitely another of our favourites (we all agreed on this one…which is unusual!) It’s easy to apply and adds instant brightness to tired and dull skin (a perfect ‘morning after the night before’ skin pick me up…unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to help the hangover!) and leaves a really great base for applying your foundation.
about with this one…it’s targeted at normal to combination skin and is even good on dry skin. A City torn between the old world and the new Dubai has to be experienced to be believed - with glimmering buildings, breathtaking views and some of the world’s most impressive architecture – but don’t forget that tradition still reigns RISING like a mirage out of the desert, Dubai – the highest populated city in the United Arab Emirates – is torn by both the old world and new, by tradition and development. Some of the world’s biggest and most spectacular buildings sit next unfinished building sites, luxury designer stores next to roads still being built by the mass immigrant population, and, whilst to the Western world the lifestyle might look modern, religious traditions are still very much respected and lived by. It’s a fascinating place, but one that’s not entirely comfortable to be in. A wander through the Dubai Mall, past Chanel, Dior and Gucci, and you could easily think you were in New York – but step outside into the blistering heat, with the desert in the distance, and you’ll soon remember that this is one of the most foreign and unfamiliar feeling places you can visit. Arriving at Dubai Airport on a luxury
only describe as like breathing in hot water, and heat is so intense it is almost unbearable to stand in anywhere that doesn’t have air-conditioning. Visiting during Ramadan is generally avoided due to its strict laws, which make it illegal to eat, drink and smoke in public between sunrise and sunset. Not being able to drink water in such intense heat is a challenge, but luckily my hotel was fairly central (and cold as an ice-bucket) meaning I could escape for a refresh whenever I wanted. Emirates planes, an air-conditioned car picks me up and drives me seemingly from the middle of the desert, along fast motorways until the city comes into view - it’s spectacular skyline appearing as if by magic. It’s July, which means that Ramadan - the Muslim month of fasting - is underway, and the average daily temperature is around 40 degrees. I’ve been told by my guide that these two factors make it the quietest time to visit the city, and that I’ll understand why after a couple of days. It doesn’t even take me that long - the air, which I can
My guide for the week - a British expat named Sharon who’s been living the ‘Dubai Dream’ for the past seven years - takes me on a tour of the city in her jeep. I’m glad I don’t have to navigate my way around the city by myself in the heat, although Dubai’s public transport system is considered one of the best in the Emirates. She tells me that taxis are the other popular way to get around, but for solo female travellers, you’re safest in one of the city’s ‘ladies only’ cars. Sharon drives me through the city centre, past the Dubai World Trade Centre, the Burj Khalifa and Downtown Dubai’s
array of shops, hotels and parks, before heading towards Kite Beach and the stunning Burj Al Arab – one of Dubai’s most famous 5 star hotels, known for its ‘sail’ like shape. We take a quick walk along the beach, where Sharon points out the faint line of Iran in the distance across the Persian Gulf and a first for me – a desert blood moon hanging low in the sky above the city – before she whisks me away to experience the ‘social-expat ‘ side of Dubai in the form of a glamorous party on the top floor of one of the many skyscrapers. When the car picks me up to take me to the airport, I feel like it’s all been a bit of a blurry, hot dream and suddenly a pang of sadness comes over me at having to leave so soon. As we drive and the city fades, with the road becoming the desert, the pang suddenly disappears and I’m left longing for the green grass and hills of home.

The Unofficial Parent’s Guide to.. Self-Harm
WHEN I was a teenager, selfharm was something that I just didn’t understand. One of my closest friends, a smart, pretty and popular girl who seemingly had everything, became both anorexic and started selfharming. It was baffling to me. In the same way that depression can be mistaken for teenage mood swings, self-harm was easy to pass off as attention seeking, which I heard almost every time someone found out what she was doing.
But it wasn’t for attention, or at least not in the way people said. A cry for help might have been more accurate but as time went on, it became all about control. She told me once that it made her feel in control of her life and in control of her emotions. If she was angry or sad, she felt she could control this by cutting herself. Her parents, when they discovered
If you think that your child or teen may be self-harming, you need to seek professional advice as soon as possible. Although self-harm is not an attempt at suicide, infection and cutting too deep can lead to lifethreatening injuries. Start by going to see your GP. You can see the GP yourself if your child does not want to go. You should also ask your GP what to do if your child’s cuts get infected. You can also look for counselling for your child. You do not need to see the GP first for many youth counselling services.

Watch this... Grantchester
WITH the weather turning steadily colder, and the long winter nights drawing in, it’s the perfect time of year to cosy up on the sofa with a hot chocolate and a shiny new British detective series. Grantchester, currently airing at 9pm Tuesday, on STV, is the ideal antidote to the winter blues. And, dare I say it, the DVD box set, available from December 1st, would make an excellent Christmas present, for those of us inclined to start planning these things early. Set in the idyllic Cambridgeshire countryside of the 1950s, the seemingly picture perfect village of Grantchester is home to Anglican vicar Sidney Chambers. Haunted by memories of World War II and
hopelessly in love with a girl he can never marry, Chambers, played by James Norton, develops an unlikely friendship with local Detective Inspector, Geordie Keating (Robson Green). The pair set about tackling Grantchester’s astonishingly high crime rate, as the village turns out to be far from the chocolate-box ideal it first appears.
James Norton, best known for his previous role as chillingly disturbed psychopath Tommy Lee Royce in BBC drama Happy Valley, pulls off a remarkable turnaround, transforming himself from arguably one of British television’s most evil and violent characters, into a charmingly flawed country vicar in one fell swoop
By Katie Forrester
(and, the fact that Norton looks rather good in a dog collar certainly doesn’t hurt matters either). The relationship between Chambers and Keating is entertaining and endearing, and a cast of well portrayed and developed supporting characters will have viewers hooked and eagerly anticipating the next episode (or indeed series). Despite perhaps unfairly being described as a cross between ever popular Midsomer Murders and the Father Dowling Mysteries, Grantchester, brings something fresh to the table, thanks largely to Norton and Green’s superb acting abilities. With the help of some clever writing, and by tackling issues which caused enormous controversy at the time,
including often brutally negative attitudes towards homosexuality, Grantchester can certainly hold its own, remaining on the right side of twee and trite, and proving that British period crime drama hasn’t run

No Good in Goodbye – The Script THE brand new release, ‘No Good in Goodbye’, from Irish Pop-Rock band The Script, taken from their new album ‘No Sound in Silence’, uses the standard long Script intro before bursting into beautiful lyrics. For example, lead singer Danny O’Donoghue, belts out on the chorus: “Where’s the ‘good’ in goodbye? Where’s the ‘nice’ in nice try? Where’s the ‘us’ in trust gone?

I FEEL I have to begin this review with a confession…for the first time in a very long time, I couldn’t bring myself to finish the book. Not exactly a glowing recommendation for comedian Russell Brand, whose latest literary offering ‘Revolution’ graced our shelves this week.
Brand has always been a controversial figure, the human equivalent of marmite, with public feeling either strongly for or against him. I have personally been a staunch defender of the comedian for years, finding his comedy intelligent (the ‘Sachsgate’ fiasco not

Revolution – Russell Brand By Katrina McNicol withstanding) and his elegant and flamboyant use of language a joy. However, I fear with ‘Revolution’ Brand’s arguably dubious charm may finally be wearing thin.
‘Revolution’ Brand’s fourth book lacks structure and Brand’s previous flare for the written word, present in eloquent excess throughout his autobiographies, is sadly lacking. There is no concrete evidence for how Brand will actually bring about this ‘revolution’ he is proposing, rather badly laid out, ambiguous explanations of other people’s theories, mixed unsuccessfully with his own
musings on everything from politics and religion, to yoga and meditation.
The book markets itself as ‘the beginning of a conversation that will change the world’. Arguing for a ‘sexy’ world revolution that would ‘improve life now for as many people as possible’ is certainly appealing in this time of political mistrust and a global desire for change. Unfortunately, having read two thirds of Brand’s rambling, confused and poorly edited manifesto, it seems unlikely that he is the person to bring about this change.
STEVE Hackett, made famous as the guitarist from progressive rock band Genesis in the 1970’s, embarked on his tour “Genesis Revisited” which came to the Clyde Auditorium for one night only on the 25th of October. Although progressive rock may not be everyone’s cup of tea, there is no debate on the incredible talent involved in creating music of this genre. Steve Hackett, without a shadow of a doubt has to be one of the most talented guitarists, to see him perform live was truly mind-blowing.

Closer – Rae Morris (EP)
SINGER-Songwriter Rae Morris’s new EP ‘Closer’ brilliantly bridges the gap between mainstream pop and alternative indie, proving that original new music can, and should, carve its own niche. Known for her collaborations with Clean Bandit and Bombay Bicycle Club, and having toured with the likes of George Ezra, as well as headlining the BBC introducing stage at Reading and Leeds this summer, Morris is undoubtedly on her way to stardom and she’s going about it in her own individual way. Title track ‘Closer’ showcases Morris’s considerable talents, combining tinkling electric piano and
powerful vocals with earnest lyrics, whilst still remaining catchy, thanks to an upbeat backing melody and chorus. In contrast to this, following track ‘My God’ is melancholy and soulful, with chorus lyrics ‘lost and alone is what I’ve become... so I’ll keep on talking to my God’ ringing out in a style reminiscent of a full gospel choir. Final track, ‘Up Again’ is simultaneously hopeful yet charged with the angst of young love, leaving listeners eagerly anticipating Morris’s newly announced full album, due for release in January 2015. Released October 2014, £1.99, iTunes
Each song performed was very anthemic with massive build up in instrumentation, with each song just building and building. The lead vocalist was very similar to Genesis’ front man Peter Gabriel with similar costumes and actions, which added to the feel of the night. Particular highlights from the gig have to be “Chamber of 32 Doors” from the double concept album released in 1974, among many other tracks. The light show however, was utterly amazing! The show as a whole was such a visual and audio overload, most of the audience struggled to remain in their seat, and by the last song most of the audience were dancing in the aisles.

Mortgage rejections rise Scottish house prices at their highest since records began alongside house prices SCOTTISH house prices are at their highest level since records began, according to official statistics published by Registers of Scotland (RoS).
The average house price in Scotland in the second quarter was £170,190, up 5.2% on the same period in 2013. This is the highest figure since RoS began compiling quarterly house price statistics in 2003.
From July to September this year, the total volume of sales was also up, with an increase of 9.1% on the same quarter in the previous year. This figure represents the highest volume of sales for any quarter since quarter one of 2008/2009.
HOUSE prices across the UK edged up by 0.5pc in October, after a 0.1pc fall in the previous month, but the annual rate of growth continues to slow, according to reports from Nationwide. The lender’s house price index found that the annual pace of growth declined from 9.4pc in September to 9pc this month, reaffirming that the market has lost momentum. The price correction in the UK housing market, after a year of rocketing house price growth in London and the South East, and strong recovery
in other parts of the country, such as the North West, has been driven by the tightening of mortgage availability.
‘This is the second consecutive quarter in which the annual increase in average house price has risen by over 5%, bringing the average property
price above pre-economic downturn levels, to just over £170,000,’ said Registers of Scotland’s director of commercial services, Kenny Crawford.
‘Combined with the increase in sales volumes, this has brought the total value of sales across Scotland to just under £4.5 billion for the quarter, up 14.8% on the same period last year,’ he added. All property types showed an increase in average house price in this quarter, the biggest increase being in terraced properties at 5.3%. The largest sales volumes came from detached properties, which went up by 11.2% on the previous year. These statistics cover all residential sales, including those that did not involve a mortgage.

Nationwide has reported that mortgage approvals in September were 20pc down on levels at the start of the year when the housing market recovery was in full swing.
On the market this week:
The Mortgage Market Review, which came into force in April, and Mark Carney’s efforts to cap the number of high loan to value products, introduced in June, have restricted lending, while the threat of interest rate rises next year has also dampened demand.

Flying towards the future
Could the AeroMobil 3.0 be landing on a road near you soon? SLOVAKIAN company AeroMobil has unveiled a prototype of ‘world’s most advanced flying car’ at Vienna’s Pioneers Festival
An earlier prototype of the Flying Roadster by Slovakian company AeroMobil reportedly took its first test flight in October last year. Company co-founder Juraj Vaculik said that AeroMobil had sped up the prototyping process after having seen “enthusiastic reactions of the global engineering and design community”. Weighing 450 kg, with carbon-fibre wings that fold behind the cabin and a flight top speed of 124mph, the two-seater promises to be more of a flying sports car than a flying family car. The company website states that “As a car it fits into any standard parking space, uses regular gasoline, and can be used in road traffic just like any other car. As a plane it can use any airport in the world, but can also take off and land using any
grass strip or paved surface just a few hundred meters long.” The current flying car prototype AeroMobil 3.0 incorporates significant improvements and upgrades to the previous preprototype AeroMobil 2.5. It is now finalised and has been in regular flight-testing program in real flight conditions since October 2014. However, design is still not perfect- the wings fold into the back seat behind the driver when in car mode. The firm has also released a video of it in action, driving through city streets then taking to the air.

ROYAL UNVEILING: The Queen officially opened the new Jaguar plant
THE new £500million Jaguar Land Rover engine plant was unveiled by the Queen last week, with the facility initially creating 1,400 jobs. The new 2.0-litre diesel engine, which will be produced at the plant, will eventually end up in the Jaguar XE. “The Engine Manufacturing Centre represents all that is great about British engineering,” said Dr Ralf Speth, the chief executive of Jaguar Land Rover. “Jaguar Land Rover is a business driven by design, technology and innovation and this investment and level of job creation is yet further evidence of our commitment to advancing the capability of the UK automotive sector and its supply chain.” Jaguar Land Rover said it was “extremely proud” to welcome The Queen at the opening.

The 12-mile section topped a list of high-risk and medium-high risk roads which have shown little or no change in accident levels or which have had significant increases in the number of crashes.
The list was announced today by the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) in a report entitled How Safe Are You on Britain’s Roads?
The foundation said the safety measures taken so far on the A285 are not enough to tackle its problems and “more far-reaching intervention” is needed. The next most persistently risky road on the list is a 10-mile stretch of the A809 in Glasgow, followed by an eight-mile section of the A937 at Montrose, Angus.
The RSF report shows local councils scheduling low-cost safety improvements alongside routine maintenance has helped reduce fatal and serious crashes by 80% on 15 stretches of roads. These reductions were worth £400 million to the economy.

SPORT ROUND – UP Glasgow Warriors returned to Pro12
Murray to face Federer in London
ANDY Murray has been drawn in the same group as Roger Federer for the ATP World Tour Finals in London. Murray, 27, has won three titles in the past six weeks to qualify for the eightman season-ending tournament, which takes place from 9-16 November. The Scot is in Group B along with Swiss second seed Federer, Japan’s Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic of Canada. Top seed Novak Djokovic, Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka, Czech Tomas Berdych and Marin Cilic of Croatia are in Group A.
Murray will open play at the O2 at 2pm on Sunday against Nishikori, followed by Federer against Raonic at 8pm. Wawrinka and Berdych begin proceedings on Monday, with Djokovic and Cilic in the evening session.
The top two players in each group will progress to the semi-finals, with the standings based initially on match
wins, although it can come down to the percentage of games won or even world rankings as the final tie-breaker. Murray has avoided defending champion Djokovic, who beat him at the Paris Masters last week to end his 11-match winning run. But the 2013 Wimbledon champion will face Federer, who is attempting to regain the world number World number three Rafael Nadal will miss the tournament after having appendix surgery on Monday.

Jayden Hayward kept Treviso in the match with three penalties, but it was not enough, as Horne’s fourth kick robbed them of a losing bonus point. In a game that turned into a stodgy battle in sodden conditions, Glasgow scored an early spectacular try as the ball passed through several hands before scrum-half Matawalu touched down with a flourish. Glasgow stand-off Horne was unable to add the extras but matched Hayward from the penalty tee as the home side led 11-6 at the break. Celtic have now lodged their appeal with the SFA. On Wednesday, the Bulgarian Football Association condemned the suspension imposed on Tonev.
CELTIC have appealed against Aleksandar Tonev’s sevenmatch ban for racially abusing Aberdeen’s Shay Logan.

The winger, on a season-long loan from Aston Villa, travelled with the rest of the squad for Celtic’s Europa League match against Astra Giurgiu on Thursday.

Billy Stark steps down as Scotland Under-21 coach
THE Scottish FA announced earlier this week that Billy Stark has decided to step down from his post as Scotland Under-21 coach.
Billy joined the Scottish FA in January 2008 from Queen’s Park, with the task of overseeing the development of the Scotland national youth teams. He led Scotland Under-21s to three top-two finishes in UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying, including a play-off place in 2010. Billy took temporary charge of the Scotland A squad in 2012, guiding the team to a 2-1 victory in Luxembourg. He also played an important part in the development of the Scottish FA’s firstever Performance Strategy. Ricky Sbragia will take charge of the
under-21 squad for their forthcoming friendly match against Switzerland in Thun on 18th November. Billy Stark said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working at the Scottish FA but feel now is the right time to move on. “I would like to thank the players and staff I’ve worked during my time at the Scottish FA, and wish them every success for the future.” “Stewart Regan, Scottish FA Chief Executive, said: “On behalf of everyone at the Scottish FA, I would like to thank Billy for his fantastic contribution to the Scotland national youth teams over the last six years. “I would like to wish Billy all the best for the future.”

COMEBACK: Despite getting off to a bad start, the Rocks secured a win in the second half
THE Wildcats came out of the gates scorching hot on Sunday, with everything dropping for them in the first quarter. Having jumped out ahead 26-3 just seven minutes into the game, the Rocks managed to steady the ship, entering the half-time interval trailing 51-30. The 21-point halftime lead had seemingly lulled Wildcats’ energy with which they started the game, while the Rocks came out of the break invigorated and immediately started slicing into the deficit. Spurred on by JaJuan and Kieron we closed the gap to 67-55 after 3 quarters, and an intense 4th period saw them complete the turnaround after Tayo made a pair of free-throws to give the Rocks their
first lead of the game with just under a minute remaining. JaJuan led the team scoring with 26 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, as Keiron added 23 points and five boards, while Tommy and Tayo chipped in 11 points. “I thought we showed a lot of heart and discipline to close out the game against Durham. We got off to the worst start I have seen in a while and credit to Durham, they came out with a high intensity and shot the ball very well in the first half. The guys stayed motivated and focussed during half time and we were able to secure the win.” This Sunday the team are back in action, welcoming the Bristol Flyers back to the Emirates Arena.
“Looking ahead to Bristol on Sunday we know that will be another though game for us. We have seen what their potential is and the damage they have done to teams around the league this season. We’ve got to make sure we are ready to play a good half-court man-toman defence and also be aggressive on offence in order to get the win.” If you purchase your tickets online for the 9th of November fixture, you’ll be entered into a prize draw for an upgrade to the best seats in the house, in the front row of our courtside seating, plus you’ll get a chance to have a photo taken with the team after the match - all you need to do is purchase your tickets online at www. purchase.tickets.com

“It’s going to be a huge deal with Andy heading back to play in Scotland for the first time since he won Wimbledon last year. It will no doubt be an emotional experience for all of us, just like it was when Andy came back to Glasgow and played against Luxembourg in 2011. “You could see how much the crowd were

Opened in 2012, the Emirates Arena was used for Commonwealth Games badminton this year and hosts Glasgow Rocks basketball games, with a capacity of up to 7,000. The last time the Davis Cup came to Scotland was in April 2012, when GB, without Murray, lost 4-1 to Belgium at the Braehead Arena, also in Glasgow.
