Glasgow City Council facing estimated £100 million worth of cuts over next three years

IN their financial forecast for 2015/2016 published yesterday (Thursday 30th October), Scotland’s largest council has shown that they need to find nearly £30 million in savings for the next year. The authority’s leadership has warned deeper cuts will come down the line in the two years after that, with predictions they will be worse than any previous 24-month period. Although the total local government budget in Scotland is the same as last year. Glasgow will again receive a smaller percentage of the available budget, resulting in a £13.1 million cut from the Scottish Government. In addition the council faces inflation totalling £8.6 million and unavoidable costs of £7 million. The council also intends to make a contribution to reserves of £3m. The required savings are reduced by the ongoing effect of decisions in previous years, which will save around £2m, and, although council tax will remain frozen, the Council has said they expect to see an increase in council tax payments of around £0.8 million. Speaking as the forecast was published, the Leader of Glasgow City Council Councillor Gordon Matheson said:

COUNCIL CUTS: The new figures from Glasgow City Council show that almost £30million needs to be found for next year, with an estimated £100million needed over the next three years.

“Everyone understands that the Scottish Government has subjected the people of Glasgow to year after year of disproportionate cuts. Added to the unfunded council tax freeze which continues to put real pressure on services, it’s only as a result of clear political leadership and sound financial planning that we’ve survived the last few years with no really substantial damage to services.”

Those who have an interest in the occult and mysticism may well have heard of the infamous Aleister Crowley. Quote of the Week

Johann Lamont unexpectedly resigned on Friday, and afterwards attacked some Westminster colleagues, claiming:

“There is a danger of Scottish politics being between two sets of dinosaurs - the Nationalists who can’t accept they were rejected by the people, and some colleagues at Westminster who think nothing has changed.”

31st October - 6th November 2014 • Glasgow City News 3 Overall, NHS boards in Scotland delivered a small surplus of £23.4m against an overall budget of £11.1bn.

continued from front page Options to meet the savings target will be brought forward between now and the setting of the Council’s budget in February, with rumours that job cuts could be seen as one of the ways to save money.

But although all boards met their financial targets, Highland, Orkney, Tayside and NHS 24 required financial bail-outs from the Scottish government in order to break even, while a further five had to rely on high levels of nonrecurring savings.

Councillor Matheson added: “Tough as they are, we will meet next year’s challenges, however the Scottish Government has saved the really big cuts for the two or three years after 2015. “It’s not good enough for them to continue to pretend that everything’s fine; we’re going to need to hear some big ideas from them and we’re going to need to hear them soon.” The news comes as a report from Audit Scotland showed NHS budgets were tightening at the same time as demand for health services was increasing.

By Fiona McNicol

NOT GOOD ENOUGH: Councillor Gordon Matheson said the Scottish Government needs solutions soon.

In its report, Audit Scotland said NHS boards’ revenue budgets increased by just over 1% in real terms in 2013-14, and smaller real terms increases were planned from 2014-15 onwards.

Everyone understands that the Scottish Government has subjected the people of Glasgow to year after year of disproportionate cuts.

Jim Murphy to stand in Scottish Labour leadership contest FORMER Scottish secretary Jim Murphy has announced that he intends to stand for the leadership of the Scottish Labour party. Following Johann Lamont’s surprise resignation last Friday, Murphy joins MSPs Neil Findlay and Sarah Boyack in the contest. Earlier in the week, rumours surrounding former Prime Minister Gordon Brown standing for the post circulated, however the Fife MP has since ruled himself out of the running. In an interview with the Daily Record, Mr Murphy said: “I think it is time for a fresh start for the Scottish Labour

Party. I am proud of the Labour Party and I am proud of Scotland - but I am not satisfied. “I want to strike a tone that stops the Scottish Labour Party from committing self-harm. I want to unite the Labour Party but, more importantly, I want to bring the country back together after the referendum. “I am not going to shout at or about the SNP, I am going to talk to and listen to Scotland and I am very clear that the job I am applying for is to be the first minister of Scotland.” Murphy will launch a campaign later this week.

A 15-year-old boy was taken to hospital for treatment for injuries after the incident happened on Tuesday morning, just before the start of school.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Around 8.50am on Tuesday October 21 police responded to a report of a 15-year-old boy being assaulted in a lane near a school in North Lanarkshire.

BUDGET airline Ryanair has announced the opening of its third Scottish base in Glasgow. The airport will deliver one based aircraft, seven new winter routes and nine new routes for summer 2015. The base will support more than 850 jobs at Glasgow International Airport and will have the capabilities to hold over 850,000 passengers each year. The winter routes will include three daily flights to Dublin and London Stansted, with the summer routes linking the airport to cities in Poland, Greece and France.

The airline celebrated the opening of its base by launching flights from £9.99 for travel in November, December and January. Maria Macken, Ryanair’s UK sales and marketing manager, said: “Ryanair is delighted to open its new base in Glasgow, offering customers seven new routes for winter and nine new routes for summer 2015, including three times daily services to Dublin and London Stansted, which will deliver over 850,000 passengers a year and support 850 ‘on-site’ jobs at Glasgow International Airport.”

“He was taken to hospital and later released after receiving treatment. “A 15-year-old male youth has been arrested and reported to the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration in connection with the alleged assault.”

Forty-one year old David McKinney from Glasgow was jailed earlier this week following his conviction and sentencing for the catalogue of abuse offences against several partners. He was placed on an Order for Lifelong Restriction to serve a minimum custodial sentence of six years and also placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely. His conviction comes after a lengthy investigation by Police Scotland’s Domestic Abuse Taskforce, which began in March 2013. Detective Inspector Sam McCluskey, of the Domestic Abuse Taskforce, Police Scotland, said:

“McKinney subjected his partners to daily assaults, which quickly escalated to serious sexual violence. The testimony provided by his expartners was horrifying, and it is thanks to their extreme bravery that this violent abuser has been convicted and jailed for a significant length of time. “Domestic abuse will not be tolerated by Police Scotland. We will continue with our efforts to trace perpetrators of this type of crime, and we remain focused on targeting these repeat and serial offenders across the country. “I would urge anyone in Scotland who may be subjected to domestic abuse to contact police on 101 – you do not have to be a victim – we can get you the help you deserve.”

Royal Marines march for Freedom of the City HER Majesty’s Royal Marines will parade through Glasgow tomorrow (Saturday 1st of November) to receive the Freedom of the City.

Ingram Street and South Frederick Street before returning to the square. The historic move follows a successful motion to council last year by Veterans Champion, Councillor Malcolm Cunning, who said: “Council congratulates the Royal Marine Corps on its upcoming 350th anniversary in 2014.

More than 100 commandos will converge on the city including the Clyde based 43 Commando Fleet Protection Group, The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Scotland, veterans and Royal Marine Cadets from the Glasgow area.

Scotcash improve financial Drumchapel residents ready inclusion in North Glasgow for winter fraudsters LAST year the Big Lottery awarded Glasgow organisation Scotcash a £1million grant to expand its services over the next four years.

By Ross Swanson

THE number of crimes involving housebreakings, bogus callers and vehicle thefts is set to rise due to the extra hours of darkness in the coming winter months, police have warned. Officers from the Drumchapel area have been providing winter safety presentations to more than 100 elderly and vulnerable people in the region as part of an ongoing initiative to keep people safe throughout the winter months. . Police say a hike in bogus callers is particularly common as the early nights draw in. The con artists often target elderly and vulnerable groups. The police presentations provide advice and guidance on how best to deter the criminals. A further 220 people will receive the

demonstrations run by community local police officers, with more planned in the future. Constable Calum Yuill said: “Unfortunately, there are people out there who will use the increased hours of darkness to target those they deem vulnerable in our communities. Being a victim of crime is extremely traumatic and these presentations will provide relevant advice and support for local people. This will result in increased awareness and confidence should anyone try to dupe them, helping prevent them becoming a victim of crime.” So far, a total of 15 presentations have been carried out involving hundreds of people. Officers say they will continue to provide advice and support to local communities.

Paolo forced to Cycling journeys into Glasgow cancel more shows increase by over 200% By Ross Swanson

THE number of cycle journeys being made in and around Glasgow has increased a gigantic 207% in the past seven years. Figures released this week by Glasgow City Council show that the number of people riding a bike to and from the city centre has risen from 3,012 to 9,255 day since 2007. People ditching the car in favour of walking around the city has also seen an increase of over 79%. in that time.

GLASGOW chart-topper Paolo Nutini has been forced to postpone more UK arena shows due to suffering from “severe tonsillitis”. The 27-year-old singer had been forced to cancel gigs at the O2 Arena in London on Thursday, and Friday’s gig at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff. The disappointing news comes days after the indie-darling had to pull out of his highly anticipated shows at The Hydro in Glasgow after receiving medical advice from doctors on Monday.

Glasgow City Council has undertaken the annual surveys for the past seven years to evaluate the number of pedestrians and cyclists entering and leaving the city as part of the annual monitoring of active travel patterns.

European tour in support of this third album, Caustic Love, which got to number one back in April.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “Cycling is an increasingly important aspect of the council’s local transport strategy.

Distressed fans have been told their tickets will still be valid once replacement shows are scheduled.

“Cycling is one of the most popular participation sports in Glasgow and is firmly established as a major form of commuting.

A spokesman for Nutini said: “Regrettably Paolo Nutini is suffering with severe tonsillitis and is not well enough to perform.”

“Increasing the number of people walking and cycling as a form of transport has been a major aim of the council and it’s very encouraging this is being acknowledged by our peers at a national level.

He also offered an apology for the “inconvenience and disappointment” caused by the cancellations.

During this summer’s Commonwealth Games, council chiefs brought over 400 bikes, similar to London’s famous ‘Boris Bikes’, and made them available for public hire in spots all over the city.

Latest phase of development launched at Glasgow’s Pacific Quay

Elderly woman left in critical condition after being struck by car POLICE Scotland Officers were continuing enquiries and appealing for witnesses after an 86 year-old woman was struck by a car in East Kilbride earlier this week.

DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES: The latest phase of development has launched at Glasgow’s Pacific Quay

THE latest development phase of Pacific Quay is set to benefit the area by adding restaurant, leisure and retail facilities for companies, residents and visitors, it has been announced. Savills, on behalf of Scottish Enterprise, has launched the latest phase of commercial development at Glasgow’s landmark Pacific Quay to offer new opportunities for office, leisure and retail use. The latest phase of commercial development extends to almost 10 acres across various plots and has planning

in principle for restaurant and leisure accommodation, as well as retail use. David Cobban, director of business space agency at Savills Glasgow, said: “Activity is picking up at Pacific Quay and we are receiving an uptick in interest from developers and occupiers as the economy improves, which has spurred us to launch the latest phase. Most recently De Vere Group, the hotel operator and FTSE 100 listed business, has committed to the development of a new Village Urban Resort, which is expected to open in the summer of 2015. De Vere joins a growing number of major retail and leisure operators that

have invested in Creative Clyde and underlines Pacific Quay’s position as one of the premier business and leisure destinations in Glasgow. “Construction of Fastlink is well underway, which will further improve the already established infrastructure that allows access to Glasgow city centre in under six minutes. Moreover, the anticipated development of up to 146 new homes as part of Pacific Quay is expected to transform the area into one of Glasgow’s prime destinations to both work and live.”

Let me take a selfie!

A NEW survey has shown that Glaswegians are the top selfietakers in Scotland.

Stay safe this Halloween IT’S Halloween this weekend! And our friends at Police Scotland have asked us to pass along some important information to make Halloween a safe and enjoyable celebration for everyone.

The past few years have seen Halloween pass quietly but there are still residents who are affected by the minority who behave antisocially and ruin what should be a

fun and family orientated time of the year. Parents and young people are asked to consider the following advice: • Stay in well-lit areas and consider carrying a torch. • Don’t frighten elderly people or younger children. • Don’t enter a house unless you know the person. Young children

should always be with an adult. Older children should ensure they are with friends.

• Tell your parents or guardian where you are going and what time you will be back.

• If a sign says ‘No trick or treat’, respect that person’s wishes and move on.

• If you are given money keep it hidden away in a wallet or clothing.

• Be visible, it will be dark and it’s important that passing traffic can see you.

• Remember that it might be raining so wear appropriate clothing that keeps you dry but still lets you show off your costume.

• If you have a mobile phone, make sure you look after it so that parents/ guardian can keep in touch.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone an enjoyable and safe Halloween!

Almost 70% of people polled in the city said they regularly take a ‘selfie’ – putting Glasgow’s selfie rate far higher than anywhere else in Scotland. Throughout the UK, only Liverpool ranked higher than Glasgow, with almost 80% confessed to regularly taking posing-style pictures. Edinburgh polled at just 10%, showing that the capital is nowhere near as ‘selfie’ centred as Glasgow. Researchers at money-saving website www.VoucherCodesPro. co.uk polled a total of 2,829 people aged 18 and over from around the UK for the purpose of the study.

A Movember to remember A CITY centre restaurant is getting into the charity fund raising spirit by creating a special dish for the popular Movember campaign starting next week. Customers at the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill in Glasgow can lend their support to the charity appeal by ordering the special Moburger meal available throughout November. The restaurant will donate £1 from every one of the meals sold to the Movember Foundation, a charity which raises awareness about men’s health, including prostate and testicular cancer. Going on sale this Saturday, Marco’s Mo-Burger will be available at the popular restaurant which is located at Hotel Indigo on Waterloo Street, Glasgow. Nick Taplin, Marco’s business partner said: “Men are traditionally very reluctant to speak up and seek help about their health. The Movember campaign really has changed all of that and involving Marco’s restaurants will, we hope, help raise

the awareness further and add funds to help with the research and support programmes.” Denis McCann, General Manager added: “Movember has quite literally grown over the years to become one of the most recognisable and well supported men’s health campaigns. We’re really pleased to lend our support to the cause and want as many mo bros and mo sistas to order the Marco Mo-burger. “It’s about having a bit of fun and doing something good to change the face of men’s health and we can’t wait to see customers sporting their own impressive moustaches and tucking into Marco’s very own Mo-burger.” The Movemeber campaign has seen thousands of men all over the world grow their moustache’s for the entire month of November since 2004 in an effort to raise money for men’s charities. The worldwide community has raised over £346 million in the past.

Grado heads for River City By Ross Swanson

THE cast of River City are set for a shake up after oddball professional wrestler Grado has bagged himself a part in the show. Grado - real name Greame Stevely - from Stevenston, Ayrshire, is fast becoming one of Glasgow’s best known faces. ‘Gradomania’ has been sweeping the city since his rise to fame in the BBC 1 documentary ‘Insane Fight Club’ back in March. The funnyman, who models himself on British legend Big Daddy, has had a wave of acting offers since his comedy antics were shown across the UK. The chubby wrestler will get to keep his iconic Lycra onesie as he joins the popular Glaswegian show. Grado is set to arrive in fictional Shieldinch region in the New Year as a similarly funny-natured wrestler named Buster. The entertaining grappler adds the popular soap to his ever growing

NEWS EXCLUSIVE: Referendum Through a Lens: New book documents five days in George Square during Independence campaign ONE of Glasgow’s most noted photojournalists, Brian Anderson, has just released a photography book documenting the five day siege of Glasgow’s George Square during the week of the Scottish Referendum. The book, titled ‘Referendum Square Battle for Glasgow’, is a picture document covering the week’s events during the build up to September 18th 2014 – the historic ‘Day of Destiny’ as it’s been called from the Glasgow perspective. Capturing the carnival-like atmosphere in the Square during the week, and following the events right through to the ugly clashes on the night of Friday 19th – the new book catalogues the people of the city on both sides as Glasgow, and Scotland, made their once in a lifetime decision.

Brian Anderson is a former news photographer with the now defunct News of The World and co-author of ‘Faces of the Underworld’ Speaking exclusively to the Glasgow City News, Brian said: “I wanted to document the historic event - it was probably the biggest news story of my life, being a Glasgow lad and with it being on my doorstep, it was not to be missed.” The book has just been released on Amazon this week, with a print version in the pipeline due to be released around Burns Day. Anderson said depending on any interest of the book he would consider taking it on the road as a touring photo exhibition. ‘Referendum Square Battle for Glasgow’ is released this week, £3.99, on Amazon Kindle.

CHARITY FOCUS: MARY’S MEALS SCOTTISH charity Mary’s Meals began in 2002, as a oneoff school feeding programme. The charity has since grown and currently provides daily life changing meals to over 920,000 hungry children. During 1992 two brothers, Magnus and Fergus MacFarlane-Barrow from Scotland, watched the TV news from the Bosnian conflict with increasing horror. They were so moved that they decided to organise an appeal for food and blankets. They quickly gathered a jeep load, joined one of the convoys leaving the UK, and delivered the aid to Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a place of international pilgrimage which they had visited with their family years previously. Believing their good deed done,

they returned to their home in Argyll expecting to resume their jobs as fish farmers. However they came home to discover that public donations had continued to flood in, filling their parents’ shed with goods. Magnus decided to give up his job for a year to drive the aid out to Bosnia for as long as the public kept donating. The public did not stop and it soon became necessary to set up a registered charity, Scottish International Relief (SIR). The charity soon expanded and began to work in Romania, building homes for abandoned children, and in Liberia, helping returning refugees by setting up mobile clinics, while continuing to deliver material aid to Croatia and Bosnia, and funding additional projects. In 2002, SIR was operating a simple famine relief project in Malawi when

Magnus met a family that led to a whole new area of work. The mother was dying of AIDS and lying on the floor of her hut surrounded by her six young children. She said that all that was left for her was to pray for her children, that someone might look after them after she had died. When Magnus asked her oldest son what he hoped for in life, his stark reply, “To have enough food to eat and to go to school one day,” was not easily forgotten. This was a key part of the inspiration that led to the Mary’s Meals campaign, which aims to provide chronically hungry children with one meal every school day. In this way the children are encouraged to gain the education that can lift them out of poverty in later life. This simple but effective idea has

gathered momentum and today provides meals to impoverished children in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and South America. Mary’s Meals normally reaches more than 128,000 impoverished children across Liberia each day, providing them with a nutritious meal in school. However, all schools in the country are now closed due to the Ebola

crisis, bringing a temporary halt to the charity’s feeding programme there. It has now launched an emergency response to the Ebola outbreak by distributing food to children in their homes as well as to suspected sufferers. To find out more, donate or volunteer to help, visit www.marysmeals.org.uk

Plans unveiled for 49 Lucky escape for family as car new social homes in smashes into their living room North Glasgow By Ian Lesley

A NORTH Glasgow family narrowly escaped fatal injuries after an out of control car crashed through their living room wall.

Lindy and Stephen Wright and their children Scott and Holly, from Kirkintilloch in the city’s outskirts, were left injured after the vehicle suddenly smashed into their house as they say watching television on Monday evening.

PLANS have been submitted for 49 new homes for social rent in Springburn, North Glasgow. Page\Park architects lodged the plans with Glasgow City Council on behalf of Loretto Housing Association.

The development, in Barclay Street, will see eight blocks of accommodation spread across the site of the former Albert School formed around a central ‘spine’ connecting Springburn Academy to the town centre. From this a number of connected courtyard spaces would be created,

providing direct access to adjoining properties and ‘home-zone’ shared surfaces. The scheme also incorporates a series of rear backcourts offering both private gardens and communal green spaces and utility areas. Rona Anderson, Loretto’s regeneration co-ordinator, said: “I’m sure our tenants will enjoy living in these modern, spacious, energy-efficient homes.” Work on the new homes is expected to start in 2015 and should take around a year to complete.

Neighbours say they heard a loud bang as a car ran off the road and ended up planted in the wall of the detached house. The family were being treated in hospital for their injuries where, according to neighbours, Mrs Wright required surgery on her leg. Police covered the gigantic hole in the house left by the car with a large sheet of tarpaulin. On Wednesday, the white Vauxhall Astra could still be seen in the living room. Pieces of the car also remained spread across the front garden.

The driver, named on Twitter earlier this week as local man Ross Aitken, and two passengers also escaped the incident with minor injuries.

It is not known whether Mr Aitken was driving the vehicle when it crashed into the Wrights’ home.

She said: “You see them speeding up and down Bankhead Road all the time. We’re always saying that it’s going to end up in tragedy.

Neighbours gathered around the house early on Tuesday morning as police began moving some of the rubble.

“When I saw the police cars last night I instantly thought the worst but thankfully everybody seems to be OK. It’s a real blessing.”

SOUTHSIDE BLAZE: The warehouse on Jessie Street in Polmandie caught fire on Monday

Fire chiefs had warned nearby residents to keep windows shut after smoke caused by the blaze was feared to contain asbestos. However, a Fire and Rescue scientific officer found no evidence of the potentially deadly material and deemed the area to be safe.

THE Citizens Theatre announced plans for its 70th anniversary year this week, with their Spring 2015 season set to celebrate the work of some legendary figures in Scottish theatre. Announcing the new season Artistic Director Dominic Hill said: “This season honours the Citizens’ long-standing tradition of bold and daring work that speaks to Glasgow audiences.

Asbestos fibres can cause serious health problems and kills around 5,000 people every year. Firefighters continued to contain the large warehouse fire on Jessie Street, Polmandie, late into Wednesday evening.

the smoke is likely to remain visible for some time. Emergency services were called to the blaze near the M74 in Glasgow shortly before 5pm on Monday.

Over fifty firefighters tackled the blaze which had spread rapidly through the large warehouse building. No one was reported to be injured due to the incident.

“That the Citizens Theatre is considered as much a vital asset to Scotland’s cultural life today as we have been throughout our 70 year history in the Gorbals, is testament to the talent and commitment of the many actors, writers, theatre practitioners and participants who have worked with the company over seven decades. But most of all, it’s

down to our audiences who over and over again come to enjoy the exciting, accessible and relevant work that we strive to produce.” Founded in 1943 by James Bridie, the Citizens moved to its current home on Gorbals Street in September 1945. 2016 will see the beginning of a major re-development of the building, the most comprehensive since it was constructed. Plans cover a range of improvements to the public facilities including renovation of the Victorian auditorium and new bar and cafe facilities as well as new rehearsal, learning and studio spaces that are accessible to all. This project will transform the experiences of audiences, performers and staff and secure the future of one of Scotland’s most iconic buildings.

Men jailed for Western Isles murder fail in conviction appeals THE two men jailed for murdering 16-year-old Liam Aitchison on the Isle of Lewis in 2011 have failed in their bids to have their convictions quashed. Johnathan MacKinnon and Stefan Millar, both 23, were each ordered to spend a minimum of 18 years in prison before they could apply for parole. Liam Aitchison, 16, from South Uist, died during an attack on 23 November 2011.

But MacKinnon and Millar’s lawyers argued that they were victims of a miscarriage of justice. During a two and a half hour hearing, judges at the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh heard that the jury which convicted MacKinnon and Millar last year acted wrongly. Judges Lady Dorrian, Lord Bracadale and Lord Drummond Young were told that the evidence led against the two men at their trial at the High Court in Glasgow did not

prove their guilt. Solicitor advocate Chris Fyffe and advocate Claire Mitchell argued that the trial jury should have acquitted the two men. The two lawyers argued any other reasonable panel of citizens would have allowed both MacKinnon and Millar to walk free. But the judges disagreed and ruled that the evidence was of a sufficient quality to allow a jury to convict them.

It is understood there will be a reduction of between 35 and 45 jobs under the plan, which will see the three teams merge by March next year.

Employees were told later on Wednesday that the three titles’ staff would be combined and voluntary redundancy for editorial personnel was being offered. The three newspapers will continue to operate.

Residents forced flee as Hawaiian lava flow towards homes By Joe Mackay

RESIDENTS of a Hawaiian village threatened by the Kilauea volcano have been evacuated from their homes as lava has hit the first houses in its way.

THE World Health Organization (WHO) says there has been a decline in the spread of Ebola in Liberia, the country hardest hit in the outbreak.

The lava has been flowing towards the village of Pahoa for weeks, destroying everything in its path, officials say.

Two roads to Pahoa have been closed and a cemetery has already been overtaken by the lava.

Experts say the molten lava is hotter than 900C (1,600F).

The town’s residents will be allowed to watch the destruction of their homes “as a means of closure”, officials said. Decades ago in Hawaii, the US attempted to bomb a lava flow, only to

Weird of the Week..

Student offers sex in return for lodgings THIS week, our colonial cousins in the US are being spared their usual periodical taunting in favour of a story about a Chinese student with some highly questionable offerings. 19-year-old Ju Peng posted an ad on popular Chinese social network website Weibo looking for places to stay during her travels. A fairly common request from a backpacker you might think, but the student is offering something a little different from the usual rent or good deeds – she’s offering her body. Her advertisement sates that she’s looking for a “temporary boyfriend” in every city she stops in. The ‘lucky’ fellows will have to pay for her travel between cities, fund all expenses during her stay and just generally be “generous” to her. The ad also states that potential applicants must be “good looking, under 30, over 1.75 metres tall and rich, obviously,” which seems set to eliminate much of her target market.

The ad has sparked outrage all over the internet dwelling world, with many calling it a blatant act of prostitution and for the advert to be removed. Weibo user, Hsin Tao, said: “This is a disgusting way to carry on.” Peng quickly came out in defence of her ‘offer’, saying: “It is sort of like hitch-hiking. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.” It’s sort of like hitch-hiking in the same way that juggling is sort of like stamp collecting, Ju. Good luck on your travels, I suppose.

But Dr Aylward, the WHO’s assistant director general, said that this increase was due to data being updated with old cases, rather than new cases being reported. Liberia’s Red Cross said its teams collected 117 bodies last week, down from a high of 315 in September. Dr Aylward said : “It appears that the trend is real in Liberia and there may indeed be a slowing.”

“Do we feel confident that the response is now getting an upper hand on the virus? Yes, we are seeing a slowing rate of new cases, very definitely.”

Zambian President, 100 people Michael Sata, dies ‘buried alive’ in Sri Lanka mudslide

ILLNESS RUMOURS: President Sata of Zambia was rumoured to be unwell after he withdrew from public view

The Shanghai based student explained: “In return, they get a whole night with me, my undivided attention, and a chance to show themselves off in the company of a truly beautiful girl.” The apparently modest teenager says she has already travelled all over Eastern China using her unique method. She hopes to continue her journey across the rest of the country in the same way.

cases rising above 10,000 for the first time - to 10,141.

OVER 100 people are thought to have been buried alive after a landslide triggered by monsoon rains hit a tea plantation in south-central Sri Lanka. Disaster officials said part of a mountain collapsed, engulfing dozens of homes and burying victims under mud and debris.

ZAMBIA’S president Michael Sata has died in hospital in London, the country’s government has announced. The 77-year-old died shortly after 11pm on Tuesday at the King Edward VII hospital where he was being treated. His wife, Christine Kaseba, and his son, Mulenga Sata, the mayor of the Zambian capital Lusaka, were at his side. Rumours that Mr Sata was terminally ill have abounded since he disappeared from public view some time ago, fuelled by the government’s refusal to discuss his health. Earlier this year Mr Sata flew to Israel

on what officials called a “working holiday” although many believed it was to receive medical treatment. On 20 October the Zambian government revealed he had left for a “medical check-up abroad” without mentioning he had gone to London. Mr Sata was elected president in 2011 and was nicknamed ‘Mr King Cobra’ for his sharp tongue. Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said he was saddened to hear of Mr Sata’s death, adding: “He played a commanding role in the public life of his country over three decades. “I would like to offer my condolences to his family and to the Zambian people at this time.”

By Ian Lesley

So far 16 people have been confirmed dead, but authorities expect that figure to rise. Hundreds of soldiers, backed by heavy machinery, have been deployed to search for survivors, but hopes of finding anyone else alive have faded. It is reported that around 140 homes were washed away, while others were buried in more than 30ft of mud and debris. Over 300 people, many of them children, were evacuated to nearby schools amid further landslide threats. Heavy rain since mid-September has triggered a number of landslides, although until now there had been no casualties.

Glasgow City News reporter Ross Swanson meets Glasgow’s Harry Styles look-a-like, Conor McCall, to talk about what it’s like to share a face with one of the world’s most famous celebrities. IMAGINE being told one day that you’re the absolute spitting image of a famous celebrity. Better still; imagine this famous face is considered a sex symbol all over the world. Even better still, it’s not Peter Stringfellow, it’s One Direction’s Harry Styles. Imagine hearing that every day and think of the ramifications, the possibilities. Imagine being hounded by horny middle-aged woman every time you step out of the door. Imagine being recognised all the time, but as someone else. Imagine being Glasgow’s best – accidental - celebrity look-a-like. Imagine being Conor McCall. “It all started about a year and a half ago. In fact that’s a lie, it’s been going on a lot longer than that,” says the barman, referring to Harry Style’s rise to fame off the back of a successful run on ITV’s XFactor. “All these older ladies kept coming in and telling me I looked like him, this was before I even knew who he was. “Personally, I don’t think I even look like him. Well OK, maybe the hair. Our noses are pretty similar actually. Apart from that though, no.” He’s wrong, it’s uncanny. As One Direction’s fame began to skyrocket, so too did Conor’s experiences with excited customers squealing when they saw him behind the bar. If he didn’t know who Harry Styles was before, he certainly did now – and that was just the beginning. The 22-year-old art student unexpectedly gained nationwide attention soon after this, following a phone call by his boss to The Sun newspaper, explaining the huge reactions he was getting around the city. “They [The Sun] obviously jumped on that,” he says, “because, well, he’s ‘too hot to trot’ right

now isn’t he?” Yes, he did say that – verbatim. Sorry Conor. Conor agreed to dress up as the wayward star, at the request of the daily newspaper, and caused a near riot in the process as love-struck teenagers and fired-up housewives alike mistook the young barman for the real Harry Styles. He doesn’t exactly look back at the whole experience with fond memories however. “I don’t regret it no, I just kinda look back on it and cringe a little,” he explains.

Some people, a lot of people in fact, wouldn’t like the attention, whereas I...not really thrive off it, but I really don’t mind it. It’s nice because I know he is considered a heartthrob, so looking like him – apparently – can’t be a bad thing

CELEBRITY LOOK-A-LIKE: Conor was asked by the Sun to dress as the One Direction star

Interview with...

@ Glas_City_News

HARRY STYLES: Conor’s been told repeatedly since One Direction’s rise to fame that he resembles Styles (pictured)

“They gave me his dodgy skinny jeans and blazer to put on. They let me keep the clothes. Well, they tried to give them to me, but I gave them back,” he says laughing.

with his girlfriend these days. The dirty git.

Conor explains that his experience with The Sun left a somewhat sour taste in his mouth and he grew to distrust journalists after one had “totally misquoted” him. Fingers crossed he loves this then, otherwise he’ll be on another media hibernation for the next two years, and I’ll probably be chased around Glasgow by his adoring followers. He said of his interview with The Sun:

“I would only ever play up to it if there were girls there,” says Conor, “Guys are different. I feel a lot of the time like they’re taking the mickey, or they’re trying to at least.”

“I remember exactly how it went. I remember all these witty answers I was giving them and everything. Then this stuff gets printed and it was just things that I’d never ever say. I think one of the quotes was something like ‘wow, I had a totally awesome time’, and I never speak like that. I took so many pelters off my pals for that one.” It’s not just misrepresentation that bothers him either. After almost two years of putting up with daily upsand-downs of sharing a face with a mega-celebrity, the young barman had finally had enough. However, his lust for a new look would be short lived. “I did get fed up of it after a while,” he confirms, “It just wore a little thin, so I cut my hair for a while, but the thing is, I prefer it when it’s long and I don’t see why I should be cutting my hair just to run away from this thing. So, it’s kinda my own fault I still get it all the time.”

WHO’S THAT GUY? McCall’s used to being mistaken for heartthrob Harry Styles

I don’t want to say that it’s everything, but I’m pretty sure there are some girls who would have only ‘taken the plunge’ just because I look like Harry Styles

Glasgow City News

One of the benefits of looking like one of the most desired men in the world is, obviously, that you yourself get to experience some of that attention from the opposite sex. The playfully cocky Conor fully embraces this aspect of his ‘gift’. Is that the only reason he manages to snag the girls though? “It’s definitely got a lot to do with it,” he admits frankly, “I don’t want to say that it’s everything, but I’m pretty sure there are some girls who would have only ‘taken the plunge’ just because I look like Harry Styles.” During this point in our interview I point out to Conor that I’ll absolutely 100% be using the phrase “taken the plunge” when quoting him. This is Glasgow City News, not The Sun, and all quotes are laid out exactly as was said -again, sorry Conor. In return he’s asked me to stress that he is currently in a proper relationship, and that he only takes the plunge

It must be hard not to buy into it all though surely?

“It doesn’t really have an affect though,” he continues with audacious swagger, “more often than not their bird would be sitting on my knee.” He explains that his local notoriety is as much a burden as it is a blessing though. “After a night out I’ll normally find myself at an after-party somewhere and it’s gotten to the point where people just ask my friends ‘Oh, is that the guy who looks like Harry Styles?’ so I’m not really Conor, I’m ‘that guy’ instead y’know?” “Then again,” he continues, “I could be known as worse things,” he says with a wry smile. I’ll spare the lad’s blushes by not detailing accounts of his sexual conquests here in print, but put it this way, he could probably teach Russell Brand a few things. As many good times as Conor has had riding alongside Harry Styles over the years, surely he’ll be glad to see the back of him eventually? “Erm...yes and no,” he muses, “It’s not been bad really. Some people, a lot of people in fact, wouldn’t like the attention, whereas I...not really thrive off it, but I really don’t mind it. It’s nice because I know he is considered a heartthrob, so looking like him – apparently – can’t be a bad thing.” Well you can’t really argue with that I suppose. Plus, it’s only temporary after all. One of them is only a subtle metabolism change away from forever breaking their fragile bond. For Conor’s sake, let’s hope it’s not him. And at least he doesn’t have any of those awful tattoos Harry seems intent on covering his body with. “He’s got some absolute shockers man,” agrees Conor, “I’m looking to get a few more of my own in the future, but I’d steer clear of the stuff he’s got.” Well, it seems we’ve found out which one of them got the smarts then, haven’t we?

Fact. Scotland’s fire crews are up to four times busier than usual on November 5th, wasting time and resources attending unsafe bonfires.

TO BOOK A FREE HOME FIRE SAFETY VISIT Call 0800 0731 999 or visit www.firescotland.gov.uk Bonfires and fireworks produce large volumes of carbon emissions and other harmful gases. Please protect the environment and attend an organised display.

BONFIRE SAFETY ADVICE • Never drink alcohol if you are tending a bonfire or setting off fireworks – remember it is an offence to consume alcohol in a public place. • To reduce the emission of harmful smoke and combustion products bonfires should comprise of untreated wood and paper based materials only. • There is a danger of explosion from pressurised containers or sealed vessels amongst bonfire material or irresponsibly thrown on burning bonfires. • Never throw fireworks on bonfires. • Never use flammable liquids to ignite bonfires -

Any bonfire failing to satisfy safety conditions or where people are behaving irresponsibly may be deemed dangerous and as such, subject to being either removed, extinguished or otherwise made safe.

FIREWORKS Watching fireworks can be great fun for children.

However, figures show that, more often than not, it’s children rather than adults who are injured by fireworks. Over the past five years over 350 pre-school children, some as young as one year old, were treated in hospital for firework injuries. Be safe and always follow the fireworks code. For further information about fireworks & the Fireworks Code visit www. saferfireworks.com

WARNING! FIRE AND ALCOHOL DON’T MIX! Do not go near bonfires or fireworks whilst under the influence of alcohol. Some individuals may be tempted to ignore local bye-laws and drink alcohol in public places. This could lead to Police issuing a fixed penalty ticket or a report being sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

SCHOOLS & COMMUNITY GROUPS Are you a teacher, youth worker or do you run a local community group? If so, you can help the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to reduce the risk of injury to our children and young people by raising their awareness of the serious dangers associated with fireworks and bonfires. Glasgow City News

InWorrying Profile..

Drake Productions

Each week we focus on a Glasgow business, organisation or professional, and quiz them on their success, future plans and favourite things about the city… Q. What is Worrying Drake Productions? A. Worrying Drake Productions is a company dedicated to making films. We started off by making short films and in July 2014 we made our first feature, which is currently in postproduction. The company consists of; John McPhail the Writer/ Director who studied film and television at The College of Building and Printing and then the R.S.A.M.D. (now RCS), Actor and Composer Tyler Collins, who met John whilst studying at R.S.A.M.D, Producer Andrew Lanni who is also an R.S.A.M.D graduate who met John on the set of Waterloo Road, and Producer Lauren Lamarr, who studied film and television at the University of the West of Scotland and met John on indie drama ‘The Crews’.

Q. How did Worrying Drake Productions begin? A. Director John McPhail started the company after the success of his first short film ‘Notes’. He decided that we should make another two short films in quick succession, to keep up the momentum, and we needed a name. John’s Xbox live name is Worrying Drake. We thought that was random and memorable enough, so we went for it! We are working to build the company up one project at a time. The first three short films were self-funded on a shoe string budget.

As the films continued to do well at festivals around the world, we got our biggest publicity boost from The Virgin Media Shorts Awards, where we won two of the three prizes in their annual competition in 2013. This gave us our first little bit of funding for our feature film. The feature was then quickly developed and we started attaching the cast and crew. The next step was to launch a crowdfunding campaign, and through this and private investment, we pulled together enough to go into production of ‘Where Do We Go from Here?’ We must add, this would not have been possible without the huge amount of support we got from our cast, crew, family and friends, which has been true of all of the films.

Q. What was the most difficult aspect of setting up your own company? A. I think getting used to the Tax information has been the most difficult. The first thing we did was to get advice from an accountant to find out what we should be paying, when we should be paying it and how. It’s been a real eye opener. Things like opening our company bank account seemed like a real hassle at the time, but since then we haven’t had any issues, so it has been worth it.

Q. What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting their own business?

THE CREW: The Worrying Drake Productions team A. Go and see an accountant and ask for advice. It was the best thing we did. They know businesses and how they operate. Even if you think you have a good knowledge of how to handle your money, there is always an easier way, and these guys and gals know what they are doing.

Q. What’s been the biggest achievement for Worrying Drake Productions so far? A. We have been lucky enough to have received some awesome awards over the past year, but winning the two out of three awards at the biggest short film competition that we know of, The Virgin Media Shorts Awards, has to be up there. Not only did it give us the confidence to push on with the feature film, it also got our work out there to a really big audience. What meant even more to us was that BOTH were audience choice awards ‘The Nikon People’s Choice Award’ and ‘The Tivo Award’. We picked them up at a star studded event at the BFI IMAX in London (Jarvis Cocker was the DJ – how cool is that?)

Q. What’s next for Worrying Drake Productions? A. We are hoping to have ‘Where Do We Go from Here?’ in festivals in the New Year, and John is currently writing our next project.

Five second Guide to Glasgow with... Worrying Drake Productions Favourite place to catch a film in the City Centre: Cineworld - okay they might be a BIG business but they

have been awesome to up and coming film makers in the past (including us).

Where we feel inspired: Langside Library Southside, it’s where John goes to write. There is no WIFI so he has no excuses and has to get on with work.

You’ll find us having a cold one here: Bunker on Bath Street. Best place for people watching: George Square; you get a total mix of people and its

brilliant fun making up what people are saying to each other.

Favourite city centre restaurant: Mother India’s Café on Dumbarton Road in the West End.

Aleister Crowley Those who have an interest in the occult and mysticism may well have heard of the infamous Aleister Crowley. Born Edward Alexander Crowley in 1875, was simply astounding in his attributes being described as a pansexual, mystic, black magician, occultist, ceremonial magician, cruel, deviant, recreational drug addict, poet and accomplished mountaineer. He was also known by the name Frater Perdurabo and self nicknamed ‘The Great Beast 666’ to show how he broke away. Above all of these he was a rebel. He broke free of tradition and it took him down a road of hedonism and exploration of the occult. Continued inside ....

24 Glasgow City News • 31st October - 6th November 2014 as non-acceptance of spirituality, a complete disconnection. The lesson here was for him to accept that he is an elevated soul and while he does not have to follow the mould of others (his families idea of religion/spirituality and that of the Victorian society) he still has a place in society. Once this challenge was overcome it became a talent in his life and the positive meaning of this energy is for one to bring spiritual energies to the earth plane and disseminate them to all in one’s own unique way. We may not agree with his style or philosophy but he certainly did live out this energy. In later life he established the religious philosophy of Thelema. The British press were quick to name him “The Wickedest Man in the World.”

This article looks at a few of his energies to demonstrate that his life was as predetermined by his soul. The soul chooses our life path and through the application of Soul Path Analysis we can investigate what manifests the colourful and shocking but very interesting character this man was. By decoding the sound energies of his birth name i.e. Edward Alexander Crowley, using a form of ancient Chaldean Numerology we can go deep into the soul of this man.

Early life Crowley’s family were of the Plymouth Brethren, a Radical Protestant sect and because of this strict upbringing he rejected the Christian faith. His enquiring mind lead him to explore many faiths and philosophies seeking out the very opposite to what his family faith professed. This aspect of his life is in his Soul Path chart because he has the challenge energy of the 16-7 vibration, which would manifest

We know from his 20s he finally broke free of the chains that bound him into religious and social convention and this is because he had the 9-9 Serpent energy. This 9-9 energy represented by the serpent is often associated with healing and manifests as one being unstoppable and in their own power, one who is confident and be onself. So with this 9-9 energy is it really a surprise that the founding rule of his Thelema religion was “Do what thou wilt.” And he certainly was in his power when he lived in Cambridge University exploring life in unconventional ways to the full exploring a darker side of sex and magic. For example joining the Golden Dawn organisation at 23 years of age allowed him to indulge his hunger for black magic and several other occultist and esoteric interests. This demonstrates his use of the 5-5 energy as well as his triumph over the 16-7 challenge. The 5-5 energy is present in the goal position of his chart - manifesting a wealth of psychic gifts and one who is a pioneer and not afraid to take risksdespite being a very ethereal almost feminine energy he would have been driven to use this to harness his great intuitive abilities and find a way to be both of and not of this world. The pioneer and risk taking aspect of the 5-5 energy is very evident by his bisexuality and drug taking as well as in the ways he expressed his spiritual and psychic gifts. These were on the dark side and not necessarily socially acceptable, they were nonetheless very real. The Golden Dawn organisation became the

biggest influence on modern western occultism and focused theurgy and spiritual development. Many of the present-day concepts of ritual and magic were inspired by them, which became one of the largest single influences on 20th-century

often refer to this as being that of the Divine Feminine. It being an energy of absolute love, one who is a very wise and has perhaps been through some challenges in life to come through with the benefit of the experiences to be that beacon which radiates unconditional love and attracting those who need support, love and wisdom. Does this describe Aleister? He may not have been a beacon of unconditional love but he certainly was a beacon of inspiration and notoriety. In the context of his life we could say that in his life there were turbulent times which allowed him to grow and expand his consciousness. He was a very intelligent and wise man and a rebel throughout and was prepared to go wherever he felt necessary in the mind and soul to explore consciousness and what it means. He was seen by some as

Western occultism. Crowley took to the learning of this organisation like a fish to water and rose through the ranks incredibly rapidly. He eventually clashed with members and was removed from the organisation but he went on to continue using magic in any form he could access. Further evidence of his use of the 5-5 spiritual energy is given by the fact that Crowley believed that he was guided by a guardian angel named Aiwass. After leaving the Golden Dawn he travelled to India, Mexico and France as well as Egypt in 1904. It was in Egypt that he claimed to have a vision and communicated with this guardian angel. Aleister’s next soul challenge was the 6-6 energy meaning he had to harness his great creative skills through focussing. He lacked focus perhaps and with this energy as a lesson it can manifest in frustration leading to anger due to the lack of focussed creative expression. This aspect was demonstrated by his racist, rude and obnoxious behaviour to even those people who supported him.

So what was his ultimate higher purpose on earth? The Soul Destiny energy that his soul chose for this incarnation was the 13-4 and we

an outcast of respectability and social conformity. However his pioneering actions and achievements show that he was in fact a beacon, he was very influential in the Wicca movement if Great Britain and he stood out in his research into human consciousness. Crowley was very influential to many musicians including Jimmy Page, who bought his former residence in Scotland, Boleskine House. It was in this house where he performed the ancient Abra Melin ritual to invoke one’s guardian angel which is a rather risky ritual to follow for if it goes wrong one will invoke evil into their presence. The Beatles found inspiration from him too and included his picture on the Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover. Whatever one’s opinion of the man, we can all agree that his soul came to earth with specific energies that manifested in the Victorian world’s morality and spirituality being challenged by a most unique man. Perhaps that was his ultimate purpose.

If you are interested in Soul Path Analysis on your own name then contact me with your questions or why not have a taster reading and see what your Soul chose for you in this life? Remember it is all encoded in your name and this system never fails to be accurate.

Labyrinths Pathways into Bliss by Thorn Steafel Most of us think that a labyrinth is the same as a maze: a place of confusion, a puzzle where you can lose yourself and hopefully reach the goal (which is either the centre or a distant exit). Remember the maze in The Shining, or Harry Potter? There the thrill of being lost, and having to rely on intuition to escape of the puzzle, is taken to sinister heights.

But since the 1970s a labyrinth movement has arisen that distinguishes between the labyrinth (with its single path and lack of choices), and the maze (with its dead ends and choices of paths to take). Instead of a puzzle, the labyrinth now is seen as a tool - used for healing (of yourself, and others), prayer, and meditation. How did this happen, and is it true - are they

good at these things? Labyrinths have been around for at least 4,000 years, having evolved from the spiral pattern, itself an ancient symbol for the movement of stellar objects. Historically, labyrinths have been etched onto exposed boulders, laid as dance-floors, constructed from rocks across Scandinavia, formed mosaic floors across the Roman Empire, been paved upon Gothic cathedral floors, and cut into the turf meadows of England, Germany and Denmark. The surviving folklore concerning these ancient installations always tells a story of puzzlement, of somebody or something trapped in the pattern, who either needs liberating (e.g. a princess, a maiden) or needs to stay put (bad winds, the Evil Eye). The two most common labyrinth patterns are shown below. In the Medieval Church, the labyrinth in the nave was a pattern used to celebrate Christ’s release of the souls in Purgatory into Heaven; when the Reformation came along, the labyrinth became a more personal symbol of your individual journey to salvation, and a place to reflect on the life you were passing through. The twists and turns of the pattern easily become a symbolic mirror of the moral directions, the lapses and achievements we make in our own lives.

Artress visited C h a r t r e s Cathedral in France, where the largest surviving Medieval church labyrinth is laid, a 13th Century pattern that, when Artress visited, was usually covered in chairs. Fascinated by the pattern, she and her friends took matters into their own hands, moved the chairs away, and began to walk it. It was a life-changing experience. The labyrinth became for her a spiritual tool, something with wide applications that needed sharing with the world. Back in Grace Cathedral in San Francisco she installed her own carpet labyrinth, then laid a permanent paved example outside that could be available 24/7; she wrote a book, labyrinths began springing up in churches, retreat centres, spas, hospitals and schools, and we’re where we’re at today. Artress writes that the labyrinth is a place to find yourself. Less important that what you believe in, what ‘label’ you come under, is finding belief itself - belief in yourself. The labyrinth, as a special space of walking meditation, can let you connect with what’s going on deep inside yourself. When you walk a

But labyrinths remained very much a curio, until in the late 1970s an American minister called Lauren

labyrinth all sorts of things can pop up: seemingly-unrelated memories; emotional blasts; strong feelings of calmness, bliss, even grief. I facilitate a free labyrinth walk in Dundee every month and advise all new visitors to the candlelit experience to remember just one thing: that whatever happens inside the labyrinth is part of your answer. This could be any of the responses just described - or nothing at all. If you walk a labyrinth and find yourself fuming that nothing is happening, well, there’s a pointer-sign right there! Based on the reactions of people at my labyrinth events over the last ten years, labyrinths are certainly

powerful stress-busters. It is hard not for to enjoy a labyrinth walk, or feel that it is making you more and more calm. Usually by the time you’re leaving the centre you are deeply relaxed. And there’s no hocus-pocus to this; as adults we give ourselves very little permission to switch our minds off and let our bodies play, but in a labyrinth our rational mind quits trying to figure out the path ahead, and goes into quiet mode. Instead of trying to do, it simply is. It is often said that the labyrinth balances the left and right hemispheres of the brain so that neither side is dominant; though I haven’t seen scientific evidence for this, that effect is commonly seen at my walks. In

such states meditation and prayer are greatly amplified (again, no surprise, given labyrinths were installations in Medieval churches - those guys knew what they were doing) but what is striking today is the range of beliefs (Christian, Buddhist, Wiccans, followers of yoga, atheists) all who are drawn to using this symbol. It truly is universal. And it suits all their practises. The labyrinth is a pattern that is held in our collective unconscious, which is why it arose across thousands of years in different cultures. Jung called such patterns archetypes; symbols that live outside of our individual bodies

and minds, shared by all. They continue to exist because they have use to us. I would argue further that these symbols actively helped us to evolve, and if the pattern of the labyrinth is calling to you, or this article has left you with a vague yearning to try one out and discover more - I hope you’ll follow that through. The labyrinth is calling you. Thorn Steafel runs labyrinth walks and retreats, and is the author of Labyrinth Magic with the Chartres Magic, available from Amazon. See www.labyrinthmagic.com for a history of labyrinths, their uses, and upcoming event.

Star Signs I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.

Cancer Pumpkins light the way at this time of the year but I sense that you are looking for something to help you gain clarity in a certain situation. Start by asking the questions and see what you get back.

Leo As this is the time when the veil is at its thinnest we can link with our loved ones in the other realms or at least send them your thoughts. I feel that this is what you may have been thinking about anyway so this won’t be news to you.

Virgo Dookin for apples and things like this have a deeper significance and if you think about it you are blind fold which means that

one of your senses is not working but you have other senses to rely on and there is a lesson in this for us all.

Libra Don’t kill a spider on Halloween as it brings luck to the home. When I think of the spider I also think world, wide, web and so whatever you are waiting on in this sense perhaps it is making its way to you.

Scorpio A mirror cast shadows and reflections and I’m feeling that on this hallows eve that you may be doing some kind of reflection of things gone by. Its not a bad thing as it helps you to move forward in a good way.

Sagittarius Halloween is a time of transition, a form of out with the old and in with the new as we go forward into the dark winter months.

Maybe you are thinking about a transition of some kind in your own life, remember that change is a good thing.

Capricorn

Ohhh I’ve chosen the moon for you, which is al about balancing emotions and keeping things on an even keel. At Halloween try to keep things in check s that you don’t say anything you will later regret.

Aquarius

Apart from the fun element, which you love at this time of year, there is also something about making plans for something a bit different in your life. Not that this is anything new for you but I sense its bringing opportunity to you.

Pisces

Using your intuition and psychic senses will keep you right and point you in the direction you need to head in. trust the feelings you have and stay true to your inner self. Fate is on your side just now

Imagine having your very own personal support system available free of charge, available 24/7, 365 days a year regardless of your needs! Well, your Guardian Angel is that personal support system! All angels, including archangels and guardian angels are powerful spiritual beings of light who act as messengers or a bridge if you like, between the earth plane and God.

First of all, you don’t need to participate in complicated rituals. Your guardian angel hears your every thought, you can talk to your angel out loud or in silence throughout the day. However, I do think it’s important to set aside some private time when it’s just you and your guardian angel. To do this, you need to take yourself somewhere where you won’t be disturbed.

Angels have no gender, although some may appear to have a more masculine or feminine energy. Angels don’t have egos and they don’t discriminate, they are recognised in all the major world faiths and spiritual traditions. You don’t need to have a specific religious affiliation to receive blessings from the angels.

Set the intention that you want to work with your guardian angel. An intention is a declaration of what you truly desire. Spending time in nature or by the seaside is a great way to communicate with your angel. However, that isn’t always an option for many people. The next best thing is finding quiet time at home.

However, angelic help should never be abused. If you wish to call upon angelic energy for selfish reasons or to boost your ego, no good will come of it. The most important thing to remember when working with angels is that they are here to help us. There are specific angels that we can call on to help us with different aspects of everyday life.

So, what is the difference between your guardian angel and the other angels? Well, the main difference between your guardian angel and the other angels including the archangels is that your guardian angel is specifically assigned to look after you from the moment you decide to incarnate on Earth in order to learn lessons on your path to personal and personal growth. Guardian angels are personal to you unlike archangels and other angels who can be of service to anyone and everyone. Your guardian angel communicates through your thoughts and feelings. Your guardian angels can give you inspiration or that ‘Aha’ moment which is when you put that inspiration into action, the result is answered prayers Guardian angels are with you as you discussed the decisions of how you were going to incarnate. Your guardian angel escorts you into your body, remains with you from birth and will escort you home to heaven. It will journey with you through your many earthly incarnations and one of their roles is to inspire and support us against negativity. While your guardian angel can’t take away your human experiences of loss, despair, grief, illness, etc., this angel can make these experiences more bearable by bringing you comfort and guidance on how to get through these difficult episodes in life.

So how can you communicate with your guardian angel?

If you are indoors, set the tone by lighting a white candle. Meditate while you are lighting the candle and burn some incense. I recommend Nag Champa as it is known for heightening spiritual awareness. Play some relaxing music. Make sure you are relaxed. Empty your thoughts as best you can and be prepared to listen to what your guardian angel has to say. Remember, there is no time limit when doing this. It’s what feels right for you. You may want to start out by asking the name of your guardian angel and you may or may not hear an answer straight away but trust me, you will get answer. When angels try to communicate, you may notice a shift in energy, a beautiful scent like flowers or by the familiar calling card of a pure white feather in the most unexpected of places. All prayer are heard and answered by your guardian angel. You may not initially hear the response as it doesn’t always come in the way that you would expect, perhaps coming through a song, or something someone has said but, just have faith and believe. When you have been given help, it’s important that you thank your guardian angel. Thanking your guardian angel in advance for the changes that have taken place is even more powerful as you believe that the help is forthcoming. To me, it’s a more powerful form of prayer. Guardian angels want you to achieve fulfilment and they constantly remind you of what you need to do to achieve it. They also make sure you come in contact with the right people at the right time and save you in times of danger. But, because you have free will, you must ask your guardian angel for help. They can’t help you unless you ask and they can’t step in to help without your permission. For m ore det ai l s cont act Jean on angel i cm essages@hot m ai l .com or cal l ~ 07791 044 773

A BLANK looking barman not being able to find your booking on a quieter than usual Sunday night is not the best way to start an evening out, and unfortunately that’s exactly what happened when a friend and I popped into the Hillhead Bookclub last weekend. After said barman clearly gave up trying to find our name, he roped in an equally unhelpful, sourfaced waitress to see what she could do. I’m not entirely sure she found our booking, but she took us to a free table (of which there were plenty) anyway and then sharply disappeared. Back when I was a student, this was one of my favourite places to drink; quirky branding, Ping-Pong tables, home to the hugely popular Granny Would Be Proud vintage market, as well as serving up some great beers and cocktails. It also had one of the prettiest outdoor seating/ smoking areas, covered in fairy lights (note to any smokers reading this, the smoking area is now non-smoking, you’re more likely to find someone feeding their baby here – as we did) and was always packed full of stylish, hipster-type students. The hipster students are still here (with even bigger beards and more Granddad jumpers than the O.C.’s Seth Cohen) but either the management and staff have completely changed or I was so far into a beer-induced blindness that I never noticed how rude and generally poor the service. I started with what turned out to be the highlight of the meal, the Potted Smoked Ham with Piccalilli and Sour Dough Toast (note, this is just crusty bread). The nicely presented Potted Ham was actually really good, cooked perfectly and the Piccalilli had a nice kick to it. For mains, my friend chose the Wild Mushroom Risotto with Truffle Pecorino, while I opted for the meaty Stornaway Smoked Chicken with Cheesy Mash, Sage and Bacon Cream. Both looked great, but unfortunately, that’s where the compliments end. My friend had a few bites of the risotto and then asked me to try it because she was sure there was something “not right” about the after taste and I had to agree – and added that the rice seemed overcooked and yet a bit on the watery-side. The wild mushrooms themselves tasted great, but it’s safe to say the majority of the risotto remained untouched. We would have asked for it to be changed, but for whatever reason, the waiting staff seemed absolutely

determined to ignore not only us, but every other table in the place (a family stood right next to where we were eating, waiting for anyone to help them for at least 20 minutes). As for my chicken, it was fine. But that’s it. The cheesy mash helped a little but in general, the dish was pretty bland. Hoping that one of their delicious-sounding desserts could turn things around, my friend asked one of the staff for a dessert menu. After 20 minutes and no sign of a menu, I’d had enough of being ignored and was so frustrated with the whole experience, I almost shouted at the busboy polishing cutlery (I had to walk up to the service station) for the bill. Unfortunately, he also decided there was no urgency in getting us this and so after another 15 minutes, I was at the bar, shouting at the same blank looking bartender from earlier. After explaining angrily what had happened, I added “and we were actually reviewing this place tonight.” “Oh,” he replied, still completely unfazed as he handed me the bill, “So that’s not so good” No, indeed, it definitely was not good.

EVERYONE’S skin needs a pick-me-up now and then, especially in the winter months when central heating, crazy weather and a lack of sun can take their toll.

end of day review: Sanctuary Radiance Exfoliator We’ve been testing a few (muchneeded) products this week that promise to give skin a boost – including Sanctuary Spa’s Radiance Exfoliator. Promising to refine, even skin tone and leave a lasting glow, this exfoliator had a lot to prove. We tasked one of our beauty bloggers with the challenge of finding out if it could live up to the hype… “I like Sanctuary products. I like having spa-quality products available at home,

but I also know that paying £10.00 and up for an exfoliator isn’t always an option. That’s one of the reasons I was happy to test out the Radiance Exfoliator and find out if it’s really worth the money. “I’ve used the exfoliator a few times this week (it recommends two to three times) to give it a fair chance. It smells lovely and feels gentle enough to be used on sensitive skin. After the first use, my skin initially feels smooth and has a nice

glow, but the by the following morning I’ve noticed I have a couple of new blemishes. “It could be coincidence, so I battle on and use it twice again during the week. My skin definitely has a glow and feels smoother to the touch, but I’m experiencing break-outs. “I do have quite sensitive skin, so maybe in future, once a week would be enough for my skin-type.”

The Glasgow City News Guide to.. Zurich, Switzerland OFTEN referred to as the ‘spotless Singapore of Europe’ and believed to have the best quality of life in the world, Zurich has much more to offer its visitors than Swiss clocks, watches and chocolate. Known as the “cultural capital of Switzerland”, the largest city in the country sits on the north-western end of Lake Zurich and is divided into 12 regions, ranging from the historic Old Town to the contemporary new districts.

GETTING AROUND

The city has an excellent public transport system, with regular trams and buses. However, if you are more of a strap-on-your-trainers-and-walk type, the main sights are all situated fairly near each other. The other option for getting around is to hop on one of the city’s 300 free bikes, available from May through to October from stations for a small deposit.

SIGHTSEEING

Zurich has many historical sites and

museums for the culture hungry. One of the most well-known is the Museum Rietberg, which is the only museum for non-European arts in Switzerland. If it is information on the history of the city you are after, the Swiss National Museum has a large collection of paintings and treasured artefacts. There are also many historical churches in the city, the two most popular being Grossmünster and Fraumünster, which are well known for their stained-glass windows. One of the most visited sites in Zurich is the Fluntern Cemetery, where Swiss author and Nobel Prize winner Elias Canetti and Irish writer James Joyce are buried. If the kids are beginning to get bored with sightseeing, take them to the Zoologisches Museum, on Karl Schmidt Strasse, where the interactive exhibitions and games will keep them entertained.

NIGHTLIFE

When the sun goes down, the streets of Zurich come to life. The most popular nightlife is in the Old Town, with everything from hole-in-the-wall pubs to huge discos. If you’re after a quiet spot, Bar Andorra might be for you with

its range of local beers, a selection of 120 cocktails and gentle, jazz sounds. One of the best places to dance is the long-running Tonimolkerei, housed in a disused dairy in Förrlibuckstrasse and hugely popular with the young crowd. A word of warning – in Zurich a disco is a club, while a club is likely to be a lap-dancing or strip joint.

SLEEPOVER

If it’s luxury in the heart of the city you’re looking for, the Zurich Marriott hotel has a perfect combination. With exquisite guest rooms as well as topclass restaurants, you can expect to pay that little bit more, from £180 per night per room (www.marriott.co.uk). Those on a tighter budget can find stylish and contemporary accommodation, still close to the town centre at the X-Tra Limmathaus Hotel from just £75 per night (book online at www.hotelclub. net).

WHEN TO VISIT

The best time of year to visit is between June and October, although the summer months can be exceptionally hot. August is particularly busy with tourists

Technology Round-up Former dictator’s case against video game giant squashed

IT seems common sense prevailed this week after a judge dismissed a laughable legal action brought by Manuel Noriega, the former dictator of Panama, against the publisher of the popular Call of Duty video games. The Californian court sided with publisher Activision Blizzard, granting its motion to strike the suit brought against it by the former Panamanian dictator. Noriega was suing Activision for his portrayal in the game Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, released in 2012. Despite not being named in the game directly (instead being referred to as ‘Old Pineapple Face’) the infamous former leader argued that his likeness was being used without his permission. However, the judge at Los Angeles Superior Court ruled that his inclusion in the game was protected under free speech laws. Publisher’s Activision Blizzard, who recently released the award winning Destiny to gamers, were delighted with the outcome. Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, co-defended the company on the case. He said: “This ruling is an important victory and we thank the court for protecting free speech. This was an absurd lawsuit from the very beginning and we’re gratified that in the end, a notorious criminal didn’t win. This is not just a win for the makers of Call of Duty, but is a victory for works of art across the entertainment and publishing industries throughout the world.” Chief executive of Activision Blizzard Bobby Kotick added: “Today’s ruling is a victory for... global audiences who enjoy historical fiction across all works of art.” Manuel Noriega is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence in Panama.

Return of the LucasArts classics

Fanboys rejoice! Two of the best Star Wars video games of all time were finally re-released this week.

CULTURE CAPITOL: Zurich is home to some of Switzerland’s best attractions

The practically forgotten classics - 1993’s Star Wars: X-Wing and 1994 follow-up Star Wars: Tie Fighter - launched earlier in the week on download website GOG.com. The PC games are fully compatible with all current-day computers and require no backwards MS:DOS emulation whatsoever. The 20-year-old games are likely to find a new audience, along with the already rabid fanbase, on this historic second run for the famous space shooters. The good news doesn’t end there either. A selection of LucasArts’ classic ‘point ‘n click’ adventures such as Sam & Max Hit the Road, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and The Secret of Monkey Island have also been added to the service. On the websites’ community pages, user AmmoSponge said: “The entire GOG team is amazing! Thanks for bringing us the best entertainment. You all truly represent the hearts of gamers. :)” LucasArts were one of the biggest video games companies in the world during the 80s and 90s. They continued to operate until 2013, when founder George Lucas’ sale of assets to Disney led to its closure. It’s spiritual successor, developer Telltale Games, are currently working on a follow up to their own beloved Walking Dead game with another modern point ‘n click adventure series based on HBO’s Game of Thrones. Telltale announced last week the game based off the hit show would be released later this year.

packing the city for the famous Street Parade, which is second only to Berlin’s Love Parade in size.

EATING OUT

If you’re keen to avoid tourist spots, try a few of these relatively unknown eateries for a unique dining experience. Josef’s in Gasometerstrasse changes its SwissItalian menu on a regular basis but remains a favourite among the in crowd

and has an excellent wine list. Tucked away in an alley below Grossmünster church, Le Dézaley is a small SwissFrench restaurant regarded as one of the best places for fondue. If luxury dining is more your thing, book into Zurich’s top restaurant, Kronenhalle. Not only is the food excellent, but you’ll be in good company too, with works by Picasso hanging on the walls.

App of the Week: Ross Swanson reviews: RETRY EVERYONE remember Flappy Bird? The app that caused huge arguments, headaches, and epidemic level cases of carpal tunnel syndrome around the world? Remember when people lost their heads after it was removed from the App Store? The ensuing hysteria saw people bidding thousands of pounds for phones with the app installed in a blind panic. One guy even got the ugly little thing tattooed on his arm. I bet he doesn’t regret that one bit. So we remember Flappy Bird then? Good, I hope you took notes because it’s about to happen again.

Angry (not Flappy) Bird’s creator Rovio have just released the equally mind-numbing RETRY, and it’s absolutely brilliant.

In the same vein as our flappy little tormentor, RETRY tasks you with taking a small aeroplane from A to B while avoiding a selection of hazards and traps. The same ‘one

touch’ tapping motion is used to keep the plane in the air and on the correct course. Never was the phrase ‘it takes a moment to learn, a lifetime to master’ more suitable than when describing this game. The simple gameplay gets tougher as you progress throughout the levels, but with a very subtle learning curve, completion never seems an unachievable task. A clever name indeed however, as RETRY will have you doing just that multiple times as you slowly begin to figure out each level’s layout. In time you’ll be a master. You’ll be tearing your hair out by the end of the week if you download this game, but you’ll do it with a smile on your face. Now, if only I could find my wrist support.. The Unofficial Parents Hand book: Teenage depression

SOMETIMES it can be hard to tell with teens and young adults if there is something serious affecting them. It’s a wellknown and frequently used line that “teenagers are just grumpy, hormonal and depressed”. And while that can often be true, there are times when it indicates something more serious taking place in the life and mind of a young person.

Teenage depression isn’t just bad moods and the occasional melancholy, it’s a serious problem that impacts every aspect of a teen’s life. Teen depression can lead to drug and alcohol abuse, self-loathing and self-mutilation, violence, and in serious cases, even suicide. But as a concerned parent, there are ways to spot the signs and help. The natural transition from child to adult can also bring parental conflict as teens start to assert their

independence. With all this drama, it isn’t always easy to differentiate between depression and normal teenage moodiness. Making things even more complicated, teens with depression do not necessarily appear sad, nor do they always withdraw from others. For some depressed teens, symptoms of irritability, aggression, and rage are more prominent.

Two-night homecoming for Chvrches Monday 3rd & Tuesday 4th November Barrowland, Glasgow. Doors: 7pm/Price: £18.50

Ben Howard announced 2015 tour with Hydro appearance The SSE Hydro, Glasgow, Friday 24th April 2015/6.30pm. Tickets on sale 9am today (Fri 31/10/14) FOLLOWING his chart-topping success, Ben Howard has announced details of a massive UK arena tour for 2015. With his background in rural folk music, traditional acoustic melodies and outdoor living, it’s no surprise that Ben Howard’s sound combines the best of these elements to create something unique. A birthday gift gave him his first guitar aged just eight years old and set him onto the path towards stardom. A string of awards later and Ben Howard is a big name not just in the UK and Ireland but on an international playing field. Coming from South Devon, Howard says he always had a keen interest in music. While studying journalism at university, he worked on a magazine supporting his other passion,

surfing. The community’s support of his music led him to leave education just six months prior to his graduation in order to focus entirely on his music career. Building his reputation throughout Cornwall and Devon by contact with the surfing scene, his melodic folk with its beach influence was a massive hit. He sent himself away on tour for several months, selling out every venue he visited in the UK and Europe. He toured material from his three EPs, Games in the Dark 2008, These Waters 2009 and Old Pine EP in 2010. These three records formed the basis of his first major studio album, Every Kingdom. Signed to Island Records, home of notable folk singers John Martyn and Nick Drake, this marked a new era in successes for Ben Howard. With this his

debut studio album reaching number four in the UK charts and experiencing extensive air play on the radio, more and more people were introduced to his contemporary folksy sound. Touring widely also raised his profile, with dates in the UK and USA at festivals including Bonnaroo, T in the Park, Bestival, Beach Break Live and the Austin City Limits Festival in 2012 and the Glastonbury Main Stage in 2013. Ben Howard is one of very few artists to win all of the BRIT Awards for which he received nominations, taking home the prizes for Best British Breakthrough Act and for British Solo Male Artist in two categories filled with longstanding favourites like Rita Ora, Jake Bugg, Calvin Harris and Olly Murs.

THE Scottish electro outfit is finishing off the end of a hectic year, following their debut album and making waves at festivals, with a UK tour, including a two-night stop-off in their home town of Glasgow at the Barrowland.

Port Isla steamrollin’ their way into Glasgow FOUR-piece Norwich band Port Isla have made quite an impact since their arrival on the UK music scene earlier this year. Their singles ‘Steamroller’ and ‘Next in Line’ were picked up by Radio 1 and Zane Lowe selected track ‘Sinking Ship’ as his ‘Next Hype’ at the start of this year. Add to that a Glastonbury appearance, a hugely successful stint supporting George Ezra on his tour in June,

and November’s touring slot with James Bay, it’s easy to see that these guys are gaining momentum. Port Isla, comprising of Will Bloomfield, Stanley Spilman, Henry Kilmister and Willem Olenski roll into Glasgow with Bay on the 15th of November, playing a closeto-sold-out gig at the Art School. Limited tickets are still available from www.jamesbaymusic.com

‘King of Waltz’, André Rieu, returns to the UK this December

22nd December 2014, The SSE Hydro Tickets available from: www.andrerieu.com KNOWN for his energetic and festive live performances, André Rieu , affectionately referred to as ‘The King of Waltz’, is back in the UK this December, with a performance scheduled for Glasgow’s SSE Hydro.

André made chart history when his first three albums released in the UK entered the Top 10 of the UK Pop Charts and totally dominated the Specialist Classical Charts. No other violinist - not even Nigel Kennedy - has made such an

impact and in 2013 he was the winner of ‘Album of the Year’ at the Classic Brits 2013, for the third consecutive year.

“We are going to play a completely new program with new music. Preparing a new show, choosing a new program is a great joy for me.

In a recent interview, Rieu said of the upcoming tour:

“The tour is called “Love in Venice” like the new album and we will try

to bring the beauty, passion and warmth of Italy to the UK. “The evening will end again with a big party. I hope you will come, dance, sing and clap along with us.”

Sunday 26th October, Oran Mor By Katrina McNicol THIS Glasgow City News reviewer’s Sunday afternoon pregig warm up began with watching a really rather talented and highly entertaining Beatles tribute act ‘Just John and Paul’ - in city centre pub Trader Joes. High contrast to Nick Mulvey’s gig at Oran Mor later that evening, but a fantastic start to a day of outstanding music. Twenty-nine year old Mercury Prize nominated singer-song writer Nick Mulvey mesmerised and charmed a captivated Oran Mor crowd, beautifully showcasing his truly inspired acoustic guitar and vocal skills. Fan favourites ‘Cucurucu’, ‘Fever to the Form, and ‘Meet Me There’ sounded close to perfect in the intimate basement venue. Lesser known album tracks including next single ‘I Don’t Want to Go Home’ gave Mulvey ample opportunity to demonstrate his intricate Spanish and Cuban influenced string picking, with exceptional guitar solos a plenty.

This is an album that stays on the right side of the modern folk-rock genre, and through clever production, stand out song writing and simple musical talent, Bear’s Den distinguish themselves from other bands, such as the more frenzied and perhaps manufactured sounding Mumford and Sons, whom they are so often compared to.

The end of the set had fans wondering what Mulvey could possibly provide as an encore that would top what they had already heard, and Mulvey did not disappoint. His cover of Drake’s ‘Hold on We’re Going Home’ was an unexpected treat, and Mulvey finished the night with ‘Nitrous’, a cleverly re-worked version of 90’s clubbers anthem ‘You’re Not Alone’, proving just how talented and versatile a performer he is. Perhaps most charming however, was Mulvey’s own reaction to the crowd’s emphatic response, as he appeared truly shocked and humbled by the admiration he deservedly received.

A NEW study has shown that homeowners who have adult children living under their roof are spending £1,200 on average more than their ‘Empty Nester’ peers every year on daily household expenditure.

The ‘Meet the Full Nesters’ report from the Scottish Widows’ think tank Centre for the Modern Family examines the financial and emotional impact of adult children continuing to live at home.

According to the new figures from the Scottish Widows report, called ‘Meet the Full Nesters’ , there are 2.7 million homes in the UK that have adult children living in them. The report also suggests that more than a quarter of adults aged 20-34 are still living at home.

Dare to go dramatically dark this winter

WITH the clocks going back and the arrival of what we can only hope isn’t the beginning of a four month dreich weather spell, staying in and keeping warm on winter nights is seriously starting to appeal. By Chloe McGhee Go monochrome

This is another great way to introduce darker colours, without feeling like it’s too overpowering. Monochrome is always a popular trend, and works particularly well in bedrooms. You can either to choose to have black as the dominant colour with accents of white, or the other way around if you prefer to keep things slightly brighter. We love the Catherine Lansfield Black and White Duver Cover Set from Argos (£47.99, Double) and Lynx Black and White 4 Drawer Chest from www. bedroomfurnitureworld.co.uk (£109.99).

Go grey

If painting black onto your walls gives you palpitations, opt for the less intense slate grey. On a feature wall, it makes a statement that can be perfectly accentuated with blacked framed prints or a black metal mirror, whilst in large, high ceiling rooms, it can add an unexpected cosiness.

This also means that many people will be looking to see what they can do in the home, from odd jobs to full scale makeovers, now is the perfect time to be focusing on your house. One of this season’s key decorating trends is dark shades; from slate greys to extreme

blacks, this is a daring trend to try but if done right, the final effect can be elegantly dramatic and ultimately stunning. We’ve complied some tips on how to make the new trend work for you.

In a small room, go for a lighter shade, such as B&Q’s Colours Grey Silk Emulsion Paint (£14, 2.5L) or for a dramatic feature wall, Farrow&Ball’s Down Pipe, N26, (£36, 2.5L).

Go black

For those feeling brave, embrace your dark side and go all-out black. From painting your walls to black curtains, furniture, accessories and more, if you dare, you can go as dark as you like! For a rich black wall paint, try Home of Colour Black Magic - Silk Emulsion Paint (£14.99, 2.5L), which works as a perfect backdrop for IKEA’s new KARLSFORS three-seat sofa in Grann black (£495).

Hyundai ix35 Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle: First Hyundai hydrogen fuel cell cars arrive in Britain

SIX of the world’s first production model Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles have arrived in the UK, ready for paying British customers. The new hydrogen cell is said to be able to travel more than 350 miles before it needs refuelling with pressurised hydrogen, a process similar to refuelling a conventional car. The initial orders are from organisations, but members of the public can order the cars by contacting the company directly. Hyundai plans to manufacture 1,000 units of the hydrogen-powered ix35 Fuel Cell vehicles by 2015, targeted predominantly at public sector and private fleets, with limited mass production of 10,000 units beyond 2015. Hyundai’s ix35 Fuel Cell represents one of the most advanced vehicles of this type. It is equipped with a 100 kW (136 hp) electric motor, allowing it to reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h. Two hydrogen storage tanks, with a total capacity of 5.64 kg, enable the vehicle to travel a total of 594 km on a single fill, and it can reliably start in temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius. The energy is stored in a 24 kW lithiumion polymer battery, jointly developed with LG Chemical.

Parents would expect to fail test if forced to retake A NEW survey has shown that almost a third of parents think they would fail their driving test if they had to take it again, but yet 40% would be happy to teach someone else how to drive. The figures come from a survey conducted by the Goodyear Driving Academy for Young Driver Education Week, in which 37% of respondents also said that there are new rules and regulations in place that they don’t understand.

According to the survey, 45% of parents have eaten while behind the wheel, nearly a quarter have read text messages, and one in 10 have driven through red lights. Despite admitting to these bad habits, the impact of their driving behaviour on children is still not recognised by some parents. Nearly half said they aren’t an influential role model for their children, and over a third thought their bad habits wouldn’t have an effect until their kids were at least 14 years old.

hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle to be commercially available. Hyundai say that Hydrogen is the key to a future of sustainable motoring. Making up approximately 75% of the universe we live in, it’s in abundance compared to the finite fossil fuels used by combustion engine cars. The process of passing hydrogen through a fuel cell creates energy much more efficiently than the chemicals used in gasoline. It can also store the energy it creates unlike the electricity needed to power electric cars. The Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell is the third-generation fuel cell-powered electric vehicle (FCEV) from Hyundai. Since Hyundai introduced the Santa Fe FCEV in 2000, the company has become a world leader in the development of hydrogen fuel cell technology, and operates the largest fuel-cell research centre in Korea. In 2005, the second-generation Hyundai fuel cell electric vehicle − the Tucson FCEV − was introduced, powered by the company’s first 80 kW (109 hp) fuel cell. The third generation of Hyundai’s FCEV family, the ix35 Fuel Cell represents a truly viable everyday vehicle, retaining the safety, equipment, convenience and performance of the conventionally powered ix35 and producing zero harmful tailpipe emissions.

In the confusing world of car finance, there is a new player with a unique vision. Let’s accept it, most of us require some sort of finance for our next car. There are a myriad of options available in this often confusing marketplace. Added to this is the financial crisis of recent years and it is becoming increasingly difficult for many good prospects to achieve the financing they require.

purchasing, servicing, preparation for sale and finance all under one roof, they have formed a slick operation in which all the decisions are in house. No broker fees has enabled them to focus on giving best value to the customer, without the need for people paying extra or hidden charges.

Brand New?

The flexibility of a relatively small company also means they can offer the unique feature whereby you can change or upgrade your car after just 15 months. This is just one of the reasons that over a third of their customers return and often recommend friends and family to their service.

Leasing a brand-new car may seem attractive, but the combination of the large outlay and having nothing to show for it at the end of two or three years puts many off. Others are tempted by companies and brokers offering attractive monthly rates but these usually prove unattainable, and if you are a family with children there is the considerable stress of added charges for any imperfections when the car is returned.

Second Hand? Many are tempted to finance a second hand car with a loan over 4 or 5 years. While the payments may seem affordable, unfortunately the loan lasts longer than the car. While you may convince yourself the price you paid was the one on the garage sticker, the true total with the interest and charges can be up to three times that.

The Solution To simplify this marketplace, Lease2Buy entered with a brandnew proposition in 2007. With many years of experience in the car rental sector, Lease2Buy sought to find a new way for people to purchase a nearly new car in a relatively short period of time. They focused their efforts on purchasing vehicles coming off corporate lease or motorbility with full service histories and relatively low mileage. These were then offered to people over a short period of 30 months, with deposits from just £295. This kept the total amount payable for the car in check while at the same time allowing people to own the car quickly. With thousands of satisfied customers and the turnover doubling each year, this has proved a winning combination. Lease2Buy’s ability to self finance is unique. By bringing the

In principal, Lease2Buy are able to help almost any prospective buyer who has the required deposit, and can demonstrate that the vehicle is affordable to them. This can include people on secure benefits and joint applications. While some in this market charge 50% plus in interest, Lease2Buy offer a typical rate of just 19.8% APR. Lease2Buy offer their services in any situation. Many customers are small business owners who appreciate the tax advantages of the system, and not having to provide 3 years accounts just to get a car! Others have very specific vehicle requirements, and will pay a deposit for a particular vehicle to be sourced. In fact a vast range of cars have been provided from city cars such the Fiat 500, and Hyundai i10, through to advanced hybrids, luxury saloons, and executive 4 x 4s. Whatever your requirements, you are dealing with a small friendly sales team rather than a anonymous finance company. Gordon who heads up sales says, “We are not interested in hard sell, our cars are there to see on our website and we let people come to us. They are in control throughout the process.” In a market place where is it increasingly rare to deal direct, it is refreshing to find a company with such a unique offering. From their base in Ayrshire on the west coast of Scotland, they also offer UK wide delivery and are delighted to have customers from Caithness to Cornwall.

GLASGOW ROCKS

Rocks edged by Andy Murray wins Valencia Open Phoenix in thriller

CHESHIRE Phoenix snatched their second victory in the new BBL Championship campaign, downing Glasgow Rocks 89-86 on the road in Scotland, with the duo of Demond Watt and Mike DiNunno pacing the winners with 26 points apiece. Only six players stepped on the court for Cheshire and the five starters accounted for every single point scored by the visitors, but Rocks did not take advantage of the longer rotation, dropping to a 2-3 record.

ANDY Murray saved five match points against Spaniard Tommy Robredo for the second time in a month to win the Valencia Open. The Scot, who also beat Robredo

in last month’s Shenzhen final, won 3-6 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (10-8) after three hours and 20 minutes. Murray, 27, claimed his third title in five weeks and closes in on a place at the ATP World Tour Finals.

“I know it was an incredible match,” said Murray. “The tennis at the end and in the second set was high level. I played well at the right moments.”

Hamilton Park named top course at the Racecourse Groundstaff Awards 2014 THE team at Hamilton Park Racecourse were celebrating after the Racecourse Association announced them as one of the winners of the 2014 Racecourse Groundstaff Awards. The annual Awards celebrate the hard work of racecourse Groundstaff teams across the country who maintain and develop the racing

surface. Following on from Kelso Racecourse being named inaugural Groundstaff Champions in 2013, the RCA Showcase Awards will once again play host to the presentation of the overall award in 2014, where Hamilton Park will be hoping to emulate their Scottish Racing counterparts.

The hosts did jump out ahead 24-19 after the first quarter and led by as many as 13 points in the second quarter, seeing their lead trimmed to 49-45 by the halftime interval. Phoenix jumped out in front in

the second half, but the margin separating the sides was rather fragile.

With three minutes remaining in the game, Rocks turned the tables around once again, going up 82-81 after JaJuan Smith tipped in a missed shot by his teammate. However, Phoenix responded with a quick 6-0 running to get back in front. Down the stretch, Rocks had a chance to tie it with a half-court heave by Keiron Achara after Demond Watt missed two free throws, but the long-range buzzerbeater came up inches short, giving Phoenix the win. Next up, the Rocks play Durham Wildcats this Saturday at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre.

Warriors remain top after win in France Montpellier Herault 13 – 15 Glasgow Warriors

Saturday, 25 October, 2014 - 18:15 GLASGOW Warriors remain top of European Rugby Champions Cup Pool Four after beating Montpellier at the Altrad Stadium to record only their second win on French soil in the top tier of European competition. Finn Russell kicked three penalties to Benoit Paillaugue’s two to give Glasgow a narrow half-time advantage. Russell kicked two more before the hosts got a late converted penalty try Glasgow lead Toulouse by a point after two rounds of fixtures.

Gregor Townsend’s men, buoyed by last weekend’s win over Bath, took an early lead through Russell’s penalty but their next kick, by Stuart Hogg from near halfway, hit the outside of the left-hand post. However, the French Top 14 side continued to infringe and Russell kicked the Warriors into a six-point lead. Paillaugue’s first penalty for the hosts was successful but Russell soon replied. Paillaugue, with his next kick, followed Hogg in hitting the upright. DTH van der Merwe then replaced Tommy Seymour after he picked up a head knock.

The Warriors almost claimed the opening try when Mark Bennett was stopped just short of the line.

Paillaugue brought the home side back to within three points but dragged his first penalty of the second half wide. A superb break by Bennett eventually led to the sin-binning of Montpellier’s Robert Ebersohn and Russell successfully kicked the resulting penalty.

Hogg could not find the posts with his latest long-range penalty but a knockon afforded Russell the chance to extend Glasgow’s lead and he duly delivered.

Enzo Selponi’s drop-goal attempt bounced under the posts and there was more frustration for the home fans when Paillaugue’s replacement Teddy Iribaren shanked his first penalty wide. Another miss from distance by Hogg preceded Montpellier’s penalty try, which came after several scrums, and Iribaren added the extras. The two-point margin of defeat ensured a losing bonus point for the home side and the Warriors will now head home to prepare for the visit of Benetton Treviso at Scotstoun on today (Friday 31st October) in the GUINNESS PRO12.

This weekend JOHN SMITH’S RACEDAY in football IT’S another big weekend in football for the fans of Glasgow’s three clubs. SPL champions Celtic are at home to Inverness, who are riding high this season and second in the table after eleven games, one ahead of Dundee Utd and three ahead of Celtic, who have a game in hand. The Highlanders will be visiting town knowing that their hopes of maintaining a title challenge would be given real credibility if they could emerge from Celtic Park with at least a point. Celtic fans, many of whom are still a little unsure about manager Ronny Deila, will be hoping their own quest for the flag is now derailed, after two league wins and a couple of good Europa League results. Partick face an even tougher task than their Glasgow neighbours, as they prepare to take on highflying league leaders Hamilton. The

Firhill men have had a patchy start to the season, and currently lie in 8th place, and have disappointed in their last two matches. Their quest for a European place – by no means out of reach – requires a big result, at a ground where no side has won in the league since the opening day of the season. Finally, League One champions Rangers, fresh from their latest board room machinations, are heading off to Dumbarton, as they aim to keep up the pressure on early leaders Hearts, whose momentum was stalled somewhat at Hibs, where they needed a late equaliser to snatch a point from the Easter Road club. Glasgow’s three teams all need results, or they’ll find themselves under pressure. All In The Game, Issue 2, is out this weekend, and is available from Magzter.

Glasgow City Sport Scotland faces injury crisis ahead of autumn Tests 48 Glasgow City News • 31st October - 6th November 2014

Andy wins in Valencia Rocks edged out by Phoenix The weekend in football with James Forrest

By Ian Lesley

With just over a week until Scotland’s first Test, the team are facing major injury problems. Scotland v Argentina Saturday 8 November, BT Murrayfield, 5:30pm

SCOTLAND games against Argentina over the last twenty years have been typically close affairs. In thirteen matches, the widest winning margin is twelve points – the Scots lost during the 2011 Rugby World Cup by one point, and won in Cordoba this summer by two points – and so when the Pumas come to BT Murrayfield for Vern Cotter’s first home game as Scotland coach, you can be sure it’s going to be a tough, nail-biting Test match. Matt Scott, David Denton, Ryan Grant, Grant Gilchrist and Ryan Wilson are all either injured or have only recently returned to action and are not deemed Test-match fit. Two of Scotland’s most experienced scrum-halves were also unable to take any significant part in a Newcastle squad session. Chris Cuister has a calf strain and Greig Laidlaw has suffered deep bruising to his lower leg. While both are expected to be fit for the Argentina Test, Scotland head coach Vern Cotter doubts either will play for their clubs this weekend, leaving them a little undercooked for a Test match a week on Saturday.

On top of the scrum-half crisis, neither of Scotland’s two best centres did much. Mark Bennett has a sore knee and Alex Dunbar had a repetition of the thigh problem that kept him out of action for five weeks ahead of Glasgow’s European tie in Montpellier, where he only lasted until half time. Bennett is the form player in Scotland and should recover in time to make his international debut against Argentina but Dunbar is a real doubt, especially since he has had so little rugby in recent weeks. Argentina’s performances so far in the Rugby Championship suggest they are not far away from claiming their first scalp against one of the old TriNations. They only narrowly lost their two matches against the mighty Springboks (6-13 in South Africa, and 31-33 at home) and will be full of confidence heading in to the next round of games. You can see Scotland play Argentina at BT INJURY ISSUES: Vern Cotter will be hoping injury problems won’t cause too much of a problem in his first Murrayfield for £20 (adults) and £10 (U18s/ home game as Scotland coach against Argentina next Saturday Students).
