Generous Glaswegians donate thousands of bags to Glasgow’s Needy food bank By Fiona McNicol
AS images were being beamed around the world of Glasgow’s post-indy referendum ‘riots’ and the general feeling in the city was one of disappointment and disgust at the behaviour of some of its citizens, something that no one could have foreseen was about to turn it all around. On the morning of Saturday 20th September, after the broken bottles and remains of Friday night’s disturbances had been cleared away, father and son duo Andrew and Darren Carnegie took to Glasgow’s George Square to continue the work they’ve been carrying out for years – campaigning to end poverty. As they were speaking about their work and Glasgow’s Needy - the small food bank, which they run themselves, a crowd began to gather. Someone spontaneously bought a bag of food shopping and left it in front of Andrew and Darren in the Square. Somebody else soon added another bag and before the pair knew it, the area in front of them was covered by donations.
PEACE AND END TO POVERTY: Donated bags of food fill the Square in the city centre
“People just kept bring bags” said Darren “It was completely spontaneous, and then all of a sudden, people started posting about it on social media and there so many bags.” “In the end, we needed two cars just to move it all.” He added. And that was just Saturday. FULL STORY PAGE 3

Mobile Jammer coming to the UK?
By KAITLIN MCMANUS
“The riots were all over the internet. It painted a really bad picture of Glasgow, being shown all over the world,” he said “But then when people heard about this, they wanted to help. We started getting phone calls; people wanted to volunteer, or
donate, or help however.” “It was Glasgow showing its true colours.” As pictures and stories spread over Twitter and Facebook, the local and national press began to pick up the story, and soon Andrew and Darren were overwhelmed by the support from all over the country. Dad Andrew has been collecting food and supporting some of Glasgow’s most impoverished people for over 10 years – working to help people at particularly difficult times such as Christmas. The pair set up a food bank last Christmas and spent their holidays delivering not only food to those desperately in need, but also cooking equipment, bedding and other basic items that they were shocked to find people and families were living without. But for a long time, Darren and
Andrew have had little or no support from anyone else. When they realised the scale of support from the George Square food bank, they were both completely overwhelmed. “I feel proud of Glasgow and completely humbled.” Says Darren. “For me and my Dad, it’s not about recognition for us, but the feedback and support has helped us to both keep going.” The following Saturday, after a massive amount of social media coverage, Darren and Andrew were back in George Square – this time with entertainment for those generous enough to donate food. Over the course of the day, thousands of people turned up and an estimated £50k worth of food was donated by local people. The father and son team had to put out a call for volunteer van drivers to help them move the huge stock of food, as they currently don’t own a
van of their own. In true Glaswegian spirit, a “fleet of vans”, as Darren puts it, turned up to offer their help.
at the Square and when I’m feeling exhausted, I read them, they give me the motivation to keep going.
Since last Saturday’s massive donation, Andrew and Darren have been busy delivering the food to local people in need, and even re-stocking the shelves of other small food banks. With only a small space to store food currently, the pair are looking into financing new premises so they can help even more people in Glasgow.
“One message read “Thank you for this, Glasgow needed this. Another said “You’ve given us hope for a better future. It’s incredible.”
In what has been an insanely busy and overwhelming week for them both, Darren says that the messages he has received from supporters has kept him going. “We’ve had so many people getting in touch to say thank you for what you’re doing or to ask how they can do something similar where they are. I’m trying to get back in touch with everyone that contacts us.” “People wrote messages in a book

The food bank at George Square is set to continue, with Darren and Andrew planning on being there ever Saturday from now on. Whilst they are keen to help as many people as possible, Darren says it’s the root causes of the poverty problem that needs to be looked at. “When we’ve been out delivering food to people and seeing how people are forced to live, I’ve been completely shocked. It’s shameful that there is poverty like this in Scotland.” He said. Darren added: “We’re fighting for the humanitarian aspect but it’s the

Glasgow nurseries GLASGOW has been sector leading for many years with its internationally acclaimed approach to early intervention and nurture initiatives.
SPECIAL GUEST: Steffi Doll met with fans at Hamelys Glasgow.
The research was carried out during May and June 2014 by an academic team from the University of Stirling on behalf of Glasgow City Council and the Glasgow Centre for Population Health.
EARY YEARS: New early intervention practices are having a positive effect on Glasgow’s children The main aim of the study was to explore the ways in which parents, carers and staff experienced the nurture approach developed in nursery settings in Glasgow, and their perspectives on the impact that this approach has had on the wellbeing and development of young children and family engagement in learning. The research team found that staff were enthusiastic about the nurture approach and satisfied with the outcomes that it was achieving for children. As one nursery Head Teacher said: “You can see the difference - the evidence is there... [You should] have no doubt that it will make a difference, once you have tried [a nurture corner] you will never go back.”
As well as supporting children’s language development and communication, staff reported that the nurture approach appeared to increase children’s confidence to an extent that was regarded by some practitioners as transformational. Fiona Crawford, Consultant in Public Health at GCPH/NHSGGC commented: “We know that a good start in life makes a huge difference to a child’s future health and wellbeing. This qualitative research study provides very useful learning that can further inform and enhance future policy and practice in early years approaches in Glasgow and beyond.”

Nicki Minaj to host MTV EMA show at The Hydro NICKI Minaj is set to bring her high octane performance to Scotland, when she hosts the 2014 MTV EMA awards. The hip hop artist who has been nominated for four awards at this year’s prestigious ceremony in Glasgow’s SSE Hydro, will also perform at the bash. Just weeks before she releases her highly anticipated third studio album
The PinkPrint, Minaj will be hosting the world’s annual music awards show that celebrates the year’s hottest artists from around the globe. The singer confirmed via Twitter that she was excited, posting: “I will not only perform, but I have the honorable task of HOSTING this year’s #MTVEMA!!!!!!! AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! ” The event will broadcast live from the SSE Hydro in Glasgow on Sunday 9th
Alongside the Commonwealth Games, key drivers of visitor volume during August included the Merchant City Festival, Piping Live! and the World Pipe Band Championships, the UDO World Street Dance Championships, Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway Tour at the SSE Hydro and the International Bible Students Association (IBSA) conference at the SECC.
The Merchant City Festival drew record-breaking crowds of more than 215,000 to Glasgow’s cultural quarter while 8,000 delegates from around the world attended the IBSA convention. In particular, during Piping Live! and the World Pipe Band Championships, from August 11-16, hotel occupancy was never less than 97% and reached 99% on three nights. Sean Morgan, Managing Director at LJ Research, insists guests will continue to flock to Glasgow. He said: “The upward trend seen in the Glasgow hotel market was again apparent in August and highlights a significant transformation taking place in Scotland’s largest city. “Looking at our LJ Forecaster forward bookings there are no signs of any slowdown in demand or tapering of appetite to stay in the city. Among other things, secured conference business and leisure events at the SSE Hydro will continue to generate new guests for Glasgow hotels.”
Dreamliner makes emergency landing at Glasgow Airport
The flight, operated by Polish airline Lot, was en route from the US to Poland when it declared an emergency.
Minaj has been nominated in four MTV EMA categories, including Best Female, Best Hip Hop, Biggest Fans and Best Look.
The plane touched down at Glasgow Airport at 11:35, where it was met by emergency crews as a precaution. In a statement the Polish airline said: “One of our aircraft operating from Chicago to Warsaw landed in Glasgow. STAR HOST: Nicki Minaj will host this year’s MTV EMA Award show at Glasgow’s Hydro
TOURISM BOOST: Glasgow’s seen a high average occupancy rate throughout the summer, thanks to events taking place at venues such as The Hydro (above).

A PLANE with 260 people on board was forced to make an emergency landing at Glasgow Airport earlier this week, after an alert from the aircraft’s fire protection system.
November from 9pm.
Katy Perry also has seven nominations, followed by Ariana Grande with six and 5 Seconds of Summer and Pharrell Williams with five each. Scotland’s own Calvin Harris also has two nominations.
GLASGOW’S busy summer schedule helped drive hotel average occupancy to 91.6% last month, according to a report carried out by tourism market research specialists LJ Research.
Strong occupancy was accompanied by a sharp increase in room revenue during the Games.
With 70 nurture classes across Glasgow primary schools, targeting the individual needs of some of our most vulnerable children, the council introduced special ‘nurture corners’ in nurseries in 2011.
The research also highlights the fact that Glasgow’s nurturing approaches can increase children’s confidence in being able to use language in a variety of situations, build their confidence and help them to develop appropriate social skills and manage their behaviour and emotions.
Busy summer gives Glasgow’s hotel sector a boost Across the entirety of the Commonwealth Games in July and August, Glasgow’s hotels achieved an average occupancy of 95.3%, which was an 11.2% increase on the same period last year.
Research published recently has provided evidence of the impact new nurture approaches are having on the city’s pre-school children.
The new qualitative research published by the Glasgow Centre for Population Health and the University of Stirling provides evidence that nurture approaches introduced through nurture corners in a number of nurseries in Glasgow are helping pre-school children to develop their language and emotions and, in turn, improve their ability to recognise, express, and regulate their feelings

New images released of £104m Queen Street Station revamp MEMBERS of the public are being asked to comment on updated designs for the £104m revamp of Glasgow’s Queen Street Station. Network Rail unveiled a new “flythrough video” as part of its second phase of public consultation. Queen Street handles 20 million passengers a year. Network Rail said the revamp was needed to meet predicted growth to 28 million passengers by 2030 and to accommodate longer trains. Construction work is due to begin in 2015 and finish in 2019. There will be a number of major new developments at the station and surrounding areas, including an extension of the east side of the building into the Buchanan Galleries shopping centre.
£11m investment to bring more than 200 new jobs to Glasgow MORE than 200 new jobs will be created in Glasgow by one of the country’s largest private sector employers, the First Minister has announced.
The current entrance will also be replaced with a 500 square metre glass facade.
Almost £11m will be invested to expand Capita plc, which already employs around 5000 people in Scotland in areas including IT, telecoms, utilities and financial services.
The project is part of the Scottish government’s £650m Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP), which aims to reduce journey times and increase capacity on Scotland’s main rail routes.
The organisation plans to invest almost £5m expanding Capita Customer Management Ltd (CCM) and a further £6m growing its IT services division.
The second part of the public consultation will run from 1 October until 22 December. Following the first phase, a number of changes were made to the original proposals. Network Rail said the main access ramp had been moved inside the station, the George Square entrance stairs had been widened, disabled access was being improved and additional cycle stands have been added.

REVAMP: Network Rail has issued new images of design changes to Queen Street Station
The company’s investment is also aided by two grants from public body Scottish Enterprise totalling £1.24m. Alex Salmond met with the firm’s business development director Gordon Lee as part of a programme of business engagement during the Ryder Cup. Mr Salmond said: “Scotland’s performance in the finance and business sector continues to go from strength to strength and Capita’s multi-million pound investment is further evidence of the confidence in our workforce.
GLASGOW TO THE WORLD: The extra flight to Orlando will be available from next year
“International companies estimate general cost savings of around 3040% can be achieved in Scotland when comparing similar operational, property and employment costs to London. In fact, the most recent Ernst and Young survey revealed Scotland once again as the top destination in the UK for foreign direct investment, outperforming every other part of the UK. “Capita, as one of our largest employers, already employ thousands of people across Scotland and I welcome their commitment to create an additional 200 jobs in Glasgow and the number of other ventures planned in coming years.” Mr Lee added: “Our presence in Scotland has grown significantly in the last few years and this investment demonstrates Capita’s continued focus in the country.

A 32-year-old man was stabbed in the chest and a second man aged 52 required stitches to his scalp following the incident in the Possilpark area.
Police said a group of at least ten youths in their mid-to-late teens spilled out onto the road on Saracen Street at around 7pm last Friday.
Vehicles had to swerve to avoid members of the group, who later ran off. The 32-year-old suffered damage to his lung but was later described as being in a stable condition at Glasgow Western Infirmary.
“We added 14,000 seats to this service between 2013 and 2014 and are excited to be able to help meet customer demand by increasing capacity even further for 2015.”
The airline said it allows an extra 3500 passengers to use the transatlantic service.

Springburn Winter Gardens New ‘Gold Standard’ care home officially shortlist unveiled open in Possilpark
A SHORTLIST of five finalists from 25 entrants have been chosen in an ideas contest geared toward the rehabilitation of Springburn Winter Gardens – the remains of a Victorian glasshouse in North Glasgow These vary in approach from plans by The City of Play Design (scheme A) to transform the dilapidated site into a garden maze to David Tinto’s suggestion (scheme B) of establishing a ‘Memory Box’, a roller-fitted pavilion which can be split and joined along a custom built track. Tax dodgers targeted after registering for referendum
Glasgow City News
Police to review firearms policy THE policy which enables police firearms officers to routinely carry guns will be reviewed by the national force, the media reported earlier this week. Police Scotland said trained firearms officers would continue to routinely carry weapons. But it will recommend a review of the way handguns are carried, in the wake of concern from MSPs and councils.

OUTSTANDING TAX: Those who joined the electoral for the referendum will be checked for any outstanding tax bills.
TAX dodgers who joined the electoral roll for the Scottish independence referendum are being warned they now risk being caught. Aberdeenshire Council has said it is cross-checking the thousands who registered for the first time to see if any have outstanding tax bills.
Those arrears could go back many years, even as far as the poll tax. The community charge was introduced into Scotland in April 1989, before being replaced by council tax in 1993. The local government body Cosla said all councils have an obligation to collect outstanding money.

New ways of carrying the guns are expected to be discussed later in the year, while Police Scotland said the use of new holsters for Taser stun guns had been agreed, for safety reasons. Recommendations to continue their use but review how discreetly they can be carried and where such officers should work were sent to Police Scotland Chief Constable Sir Stephen House last week for his agreement. The policy, introduced in April 2013, means specially-trained officers can carry their weapons with them at all times while on duty, rather than having to return to an armed response vehicle or base to collect them for the purpose
REVIEW INTO FIREARMS: Police Scotland said they are reviewing the current policy on firearms and Tasers. of attending firearms incidents. Police Scotland has said the policy allows firearms officers to attend incidents more quickly. Those officers are routinely deployed to other duties, but that means they sometimes patrol high streets and shopping centres while carrying guns. In a statement, Police Scotland said: “Police Scotland’s armed policing monitoring group met on 16 September as part of its regular schedule of
quarterly reviews for the standing firearms authority.

Cancer treatment waiting times improve Google Glass under trial but key target missed by Edinburgh Airport staff WAITING times for cancer treatment in Scotland have improved, according to the Scottish government. However, nine of Scotland’s health boards have failed to meet a key cancer treatment time target. A second national target for patients assessed as needing cancer treatment starting this within 31 days was widely met, with 96.3% of people treated in that timescale across Scotland. Only NHS Grampian and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde failed to meet the “31-day standard”.
“We immediately recognised earlier this year that performance in some health boards was not where it should be and implemented a support team to help boards ensure no patient waited unnecessarily for treatment.
The figure was an improvement on 91.5% for the previous three-month period but failed to meet a target of 95%.
Health Secretary Alex Neil said the improvement was due to a support team set up to help health boards meet targets, but added that more needed to be done.

prior to the assault. Imrie has been placed on the sex offenders’ register. The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had been drinking and was unable to give consent. The court heard that Imrie’s hat, which he had been wearing that night, had been found close to where the crime took place. A DNA sample was taken from the victim, but it went missing when Cupar police office was closed down the day after the attack. The sample which was in a fridge in the CID office disappeared during the removal process. After hearing the police were investigating an incident at the rugby club, Imrie told them he had had consensual sex in the garden that night. Defence solicitor Iain Paterson said the circumstances were tragic for both the victim and for Imrie and his family. He said that Imrie is “unlikely to reoffend in future” and brought attention to his academic and sporting success. He asked the judge to be as lenient as possible in all the circumstances of the case.

watched the attack on Koh Tao. A BRITISH backpacker in Thailand was raped by both her killers before she was murdered, police have said.
Jac Souza dos Santos had taken one of the hotel staff hostage, and the victim appeared to been placed in a suicide vest.
They believe three people were involved in the attacks on 23-year-old Hannah Witheridge and David Miller, 24, whose semi-naked bodies were found on a beach on the island of Koh Tao earlier this month.
It was only when the situation ended that police discovered the explosives were homemade plastic tubes filled with earth and plasticine, and that he had been using a toy gun.
Lieutenant General Panya Mamen told the Bangkok Post: “Two of the suspects raped and killed Witheridge while another one witnessed the murder.
Police had been convinced the explosives were dynamite. Some 150 officials had been called to the scene.

Mr Miller, from Jersey, died from drowning and a blow to the head, while Miss Witheridge, from Great Yarmouth, died from head wounds on Sairee beach in the early hours of September 15. A bloodstained garden hoe, which is thought to be the murder weapon, was discovered nearby. Officers have collected 200 DNA samples from people on the island - including more than eight Thai footballers - and the results are expected at some point this week. Almost three weeks after the deaths police are no closer to making an arrest and are offering a reward of more than £13,000 (700,000 baht) in an effort to catch the killers. The latest development in the probe comes as it emerged tourists in Thailand may be issued with wristbands in the wake of the murders to help identify those who run into trouble. Party curfews and restrictions on where they can be held are also being considered, as well as the idea of introducing a “buddy system” pairing tourists with a local minder. Tourism Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said: “When tourists

Glasgow City News reporter, Ross Swanson, talks new releases, lecturing and being played at everything from weddings to funerals with The Bluebells’ frontman Ken McCluskey. THERE are few names in Glasgow’s musical history more important and synonymous with the city’s indie scene than Ken McCluskey’s. The Bluebells’ frontman was one of the founding fathers of the 1980’s movement in Scotland, and along with contemporaries like Orange Juice and Aztec Camera, he and his bandmates became an inspiration for not only newer generations of Scottish bands ready to take up the mantle, but also on a freshly awakening international scene. The indie darlings, best known for their 1984 hit Young at Heart (later re-released in 1993 and becoming a number 1 single), were a pivotal part of a scene who were offering something a little brighter than their downbeat English counterparts like Joy Division and The Smiths. With no miner’s strike to be seen for miles, the Scottish indie scene was glistening and full of life. In the year 2014, The Bluebells have long since ceased being a full time act. The band make sporadic appearances at festivals and for special occasions, but life as a part of the seven-piece is more of treasured hobby than a career for Ken McCluskey now. The band aren’t calling it a day just yet though. A recent rise in interest of the far-reaching 80’s scene has led to the release of brand new demo compilation album, Exile on Twee Street – Songs from Glasgow. “There is a new wave of people wanting to know the beginnings of indie - whatever indie is - and they’re celebrating the bands from that time,” says McCluskey. The project came to life after the band were approached about unearthing of some old demos originally created for the - now legendary Glaswegian indie record company, Postcard Records. The label released early albums from some of the scenes’ most prominent acts like Josef K and Orange Juice. The Bluebells would however move on from the label before recording their debut album. “We were always associated with them, we were going to do a single for them. But, basically,
in the right direction. The college’s Electric Honey label, co-run by Ken and his partner Douglas McIntyre (also of Creeping Bent records), helps up-and-coming bands to not only record their music and learn important business aspects of the music industry, but give them a platform to become noticed by a much wider audience. Bands like: Snow Patrol, Biffy Clyro and Belle and Sebastian are a few of the acts who have gone on to some great successes’ after their time at the college and with Electric Honey.
...at that time the lights were really shining on Glasgow because there were a lot of great bands who sounded original.
The timing could scarcely be better for some of these new-coming bands, as a swell of international acts clearly indebted to the Glasgow originals’ influence, have arrived in recent years. If music trends recycle, then the chirpy West of Scotland tones have been waiting their turn again, and apparently it has come. “You’ll find a lot of American bands like Vampire Weekend and The Drums will say that their favourites are bands like Orange Juice,” confirms Ken, “Those early bands inspired the likes of Belle and Sebastian and Teenage Fanclub and created the next wave. Then you had a third wave with bands like Franz Ferdinand. It’s the same scene though.”
Postcard blew up, they just kind of disappeared. All the bands went to major labels, so we went to London Records,” explains McCluskey. “All the stuff we’d recorded for Postcard just sat there. The major labels weren’t interested, I think they thought it was a little ‘rough and ready’ so it just sat there and it was kind of forgotten about. We had cassettes knocking about the house for ages.
In a time of high-definition smartphones, broadband internet, and, of course, Twitter, it seems almost unbelievable that any band’s potential for exposure could be limited by geographic location.
“It sounded great, y’know? even though it was on cassette, it sounded just as good as anything else we’d ever done.”
Since the scene’s early days, venues and promoters alike have become far more prominent across the city.
Collectively, members of The Bluebells were able to compile 20 rare demos for release. Far from being pure fan service, the album is a wonderful snapshot of the humble beginnings of the soon-tobe trendsetting indie mob. Certainly though, the frontman’s affinity for past glories is only equalled by his enthusiasm for the future of the indie genre, and music in general. He is still hugely immersed in the music scene around Glasgow today. Lecturing at Glasgow Kelvin College’s (formally known as Stow College, before an educational merger last year) famous music department has allowed him to guide the young talented musicians of tomorrow
FRONTMAN: Ken McCluskey is still very much involved in Glasgow’s music scene
“There are more gigs,” says Ken, “there were barely any in the 80s. There are certainly more professional gigs, which is both good and bad. You can go out any night of the week and see live music.” However, Ken worries if a basic sense identity is in danger of being lost by bands of the worldwide scene. “Sometimes too many acts sound like each other. Too many similarities. I thought the internet might make people become more original, but it doesn’t, they all seem to want to sound similar and all wear the same clothes. “
a career spanning many decades and with countless contributions to Glasgow’s once floundering music scene that Ken would be known by most simply as the singer of that band who had that one hit. So, how does it feel to always be remembered for that one hit single? Is it a blessing or a curse? “Both” says Ken. “I don’t really mind. It makes people happy. They play it at weddings, funerals...everywhere really.
“A lot of people get the idea that you’re selling out when you get a number one single, you sort of become public property. But I don’t mind it. “It’s one of these songs that’s here forever.” Young at heart? I dunno, but he’s a bloody nice bloke and he knows his stuff. If I were him, I’d name my autobiography that. Exile On Twee Street is available through Cherry Red Records now.
Indeed, a certain degree of individuality is what helped so many different scenes flourish. The city of Glasgow was clearly an important factor in making the bands of the area sound as they did. “That was the whole the idea”, says Ken, “You had the whole Birmingham scene with all the new romantic stuff, and then you had the Manchester - before the Madchester - you had the depressing scene with Joy Division and all that. A lot of it was good yeah, but it was very Northern and quite depressing. “Ours (Glasgow) was quite an uplifting scene, and at that time the lights were really shining on Glasgow because there were a lot of great bands who sounded original. And it tends to move like that, music does move like that. There was a Liverpool scene and a Bristol scene, and it just seemed to be our turn when we were 16 or17, and we lapped it up.” It might perhaps seem slightly unfair that
A lot of people get the idea that you’re selling out when you get a number one single, you sort of become public property. But I don’t mind it.

Living life to the full at the 50+ Show Scotland LIFE is changing for the more mature members of society…and for the better.
LIVE LIFE TO THE FULL: There will be a host of entertaining and informative activities at the 50+ Show
There’s a greater chance than ever that we will live to a ripe old age, so it’s time to embrace that and understand how we can make the most of so many extra years. That means staying healthy, looking after our finances, and exploring everything that is out there to make us feel good about ourselves. All this can be found under one roof at the 50+ Show, which takes place for the sixth time in Scotland, at the SECC in Glasgow, from Thursday 9th to Saturday 11th of October. The emphasis at the show is on positivity, activity and creativity - making the most of life at a time when we are comfortable in our own skin. Entry to the show is free and includes fun activities as well as seminars. “We can no longer think of the over 50’s sitting on the couch at home, just watching television,” says Reina Villanueva of the 50+ Show. “It’s all about living life to the full now. At the show, we have many activities to try such as Tai Chi, Zumba, Yoga and even ballroom dancing.” Not all activities are as sedate as Tai Chi, however, with the chance to tackle a climbing wall. “Visitors will even turn supermodels this year at a runway fashion show featuring real women as the models. “We sent out an e-mail to ask if anyone would like to take part,” adds Reina. “We had so many volunteers. They will be given a full makeover and will be modelling clothes on The 50+ Show Catwalk Stage. They will rehearse the day before and then put on the show.” As well as cookery demonstrations and Q&A sessions on gardening, there are seminars to help visitors get the most of their finances after retirement. Experts will provide advice and answer questions on finance, including pensions and taxes. For those who have brilliant business ideas, there will also be a seminar on the best way to start a business over the age of 50. All this needs a firm foundation of good health,
however, and this year the 50+ Show is welcoming a variety of healthcare experts who will be dispensing advice in their particular areas. Arthritis Research will be giving advice on how to remain active and mobile enough to keep on doing the things you love, whilst the Cancer Research UK Roadshow will be on hand to carry out simple health checks. The British Heart Foundation will also provide valuable information on staying well. As travel and tourism are such popular areas of interest with the over 50’s, there will also be a dedicated seminar theatre on travel tips, tales and ideas. You can catch a free shuttle bus to the SECC from North Hanover Street at Queen St. Station from 9am to 5pm each day. As it exists in both water and air this is very symbolic for you, as it will mean that, at times you struggle between the head and the heart therefore, it brings you great strength to help over come this.
Soul questions;
Q, where does your present head heart struggle come from? Q, what would it take for you to make your transformation? Q, how can you bring a touch of magic into this?
side you. The soul lesson is about learning - if you need to sacrifice anything it has to be the right things and not just to suit other people. It has great inner strength even for such a small bird that enables you to let go of the past so that you can move forward with ease and a song in your heart. We mainly associate the Robin with the festive time; perhaps this is a significant time in your life too. There are connections to both communication and grounding enabling you to keeps your feet firmly on the ground but also to express your feelings and emotions.
Soul questions;
Q,, what do you need to let go of to allow you to fly? Q, where is your communication limited? Q,, what strength’s do you have that you don’t use?
Seal If you have this soul power mammal then you will be in need of assistance to move through emotional change and learn how to do this in a positive way so that you shift the emotions onto a new vibration. This beautiful animal provides you with imagination, intuition and helps you to tap into the feminine side of your nature, which also includes the sensual as well. If this is your animal then it is encouraging you to look closely at each of the following elements.
Soul questions;
Q, what emotional traumas do you keep revisiting? Q, how could listening to your own intuition really help you? Q, is there a need to look at the feminine side of your nature?
Swan The most elegant of birds the swan appears to glide above the water with such ease and grace. As a power animal this bird brings you lessons of - balancing things in your life and not forging ahead without thought and careful planning. They are monogamous so they are committed to their mate and anything they do, which would suggest that they may bring you skills to stay with something that you might otherwise leave - relationship or other wise. They teach that beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder and so; it refers to looking at the world with fresh eyes and seeing the beauty all around you not just in the obvious. If you want to reach new heights in anything then this power animal will take you there.
Soul questions;
Q, what side of your own inner beauty are you not seeing? Q, what stops you from making commitments? Q, what could you do to create more balance in your life?

Moving onto the next archetype, which is the child, this is easy to see in someone when they behave in childish or child like ways throwing the toys out of the pram. There is also the part where the innocent part of them gets taken advantage of and they show their vulnerability. Continuing to play the role of the child brings no growth or development in the real world and sees the individual looking for escape through the likes of fantasy.
Soul questions;
Q, what is stopping you from having fun? Q, are you using your intellect to your fullest potential? Q,what would make your heart and soul sing?
Snow Leopard This beautiful animal has the ability to blend in wherever needed and become part of things without too much trouble. Its sheer determination to achieve is focused and fearless, these are some of the skills it brings forward to you. The winter element around it tells of times to be still and times when you need to work harder, it is about making the right choices for you.

Powerful Archetypes Archetypes are parts of our persona, some of which we openly agree with while others parts we may prefer that they stay hidden – these are referred to as the shadow side of out nature. Looking at four of these I want to delve into this deeper side and at the same time, look how we can actually turn them round to get the most from them and in turn, empowering ourselves.
Empowerment : When faced with a situation where you feel helpless the best thing to do is take time to look at what is really going on – ask yourself this, if I do this will I feel good about myself?
Starting with the Prostitute, now before you go getting yourself into a panic, I am looking at this from the point of you that at times we sell ourselves short. Because of fear the prostitute displays itself and we sell ourselves to the highest bidder – this may not be done at a conscious level, meaning that, we don’t set out with that intention.
Q, what should you give your focus to now? Q, is it important to have the approval of others and if so why? Q, where do you need to be fearless?
Bear
Empowerment :
need to be a little more attentive to what are going on around you. It is confident in letting go of old worn out patterns and accepting of new ones and so should you be.
Soul questions;
Q, what old patterns could you let go of? Q, how could you love and nurture yourself more? Q,are you doing what you need to – to keep you on your soul path?

Did you know that doodles are seen as a way to tap into the subconscious mind to uncover what is going on at this level? Dr. Robert Burns, formerly the director of the institute for human development in University of Seattle said that, if we accept that an ECG machine can produce markings that show the brain waves and activity then the why would we find it hard to accept that the arm is also an extension of the brain using muscles and nerves to create a doodle? People have and will always doodle as a form of daydreaming and it makes interesting analysis when interpreting them for my own clients when doing a psychic reading.
We’ve all experienced the Victim scenario, “woe is me” where folk allow themselves to become victims of their own circumstances. Sometimes, this is because they cannot see what they would put in place of the issue or of what they fell victim to and so, it becomes “better the devil you know” than try to look at something new that would actually give them so much more in terms of their own power.
to me” or “I’m not good enough” things like this are self fulfilling prophecies that become a reality in our lives. All you have to do is look back and see how many times you could have had something better and then changed your mind, only to discover it never happened or it was not to be.
Empowerment : Believe in yourself and what you can achieve, expect things to happen and be grateful when they do appear in your life. Start by putting a stop to negative thinking that wears you down. Then, trust that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. You will by now have realised that these four archetypes are all interchangeable and that in
Empowerment : It is easy to break the chains that bind you to any situation. All you need to do is see it for what it really is – that said, if you have been in a situation where you have been told often enough that you can’t change or that you are worthless then it becomes a belief so, this maybe easier to say than done. Breaking free would perhaps be a challenge to begin with but, the more you do something the more you make it your own and so, its about making changes and breaking through the initial pain barrier to gain freedom and empowerment. The saboteur is present in each and every one of us and at one time or another we may have stopped ourselves from having the best simply by thinking things like “ that never happens
each of them there is a limitation that prevents you from standing in your own power and moving forwards in a positive and proactive way. The choice is yours but personally, I know which one I prefer. From a spiritual perspective, we are here to grow and to allow the soul to experience but if we get in the way and allow others to walk our path for us then we stilt the souls growth on the earth plane.

Star Signs I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.
By Dr, Jude Currivan As we head into the last three months of the year, there is a series of powerful astrological alignments that include a pair of eclipses, a planetary Grand Trine, and the sixth of the sequence of seven square aspects between Uranus and Pluto that began in mid-2012 – oh and Mercury is retrograde for three weeks during this period.

Aries
It may seem like you have been living in a goldfish bowl watching the world go by and feeling stuck however, at any point in time you can change this, all you need to do is break the cycle and get out.
Taurus A laid back attitude is just what is needed to help you through the week. You don’t appear to be in any rush to do things and if anything you could be dipping your toe in the water to test something out.
Gemini For some reason it seems to be a time where you want to have
time and space you yourself, its not the silent treatment towards anyone its more about what you feel you need at the moment.
Cancer You are balancing the weight of the world on your shoulders but
appear to be doing this with ease, this is fine for now however make sure you off load at some point so that you are not over burdened.
Leo Learning and new knowledge are both keys to where you are at and
I sense you could be thinking of expanding your skills and that you need to have mental stimulation to give you the challenge you need.
Virgo There is a touch of magic in the air and you appear to be
making things happen whatever you turn your hand to. This is a positive and fruitful time so make the most of what you have.
Libra Life can be like a game of chess, you wonder what move to make
next for the best. If you play your hand with caution and consider your moves then you won’t find yourself in a checkmate position.
Scorpio A little lighthearted fun is called for when life gets tough.
You know it’s all to easy to get tied up in the serious side of things and forget that we need balance in all sides of life so go play and have fun.
Sagittarius News may be on its way to you and could bring some
thoughts of the past – life moves on but memories stay with us forever and nothing can take that away from you. A short journey may be on the cards.
Capricorn
A pair of lunar and solar eclipses, on 8th and 23rd October respectively, offers an opportunity on both inner and outer levels to breakthrough to new levels of authenticity and the re-soulution of injustices. The lunar eclipse in Aries is conjunct Uranus. The combined energies in this Fire sign of selfempowerment enables revolutionary shifts in achieving genuine real-ationships both with ourselves and others. And the Sun’s radiance in opposition in Libra shines a beneficial sense of clarity and balance of understanding on the need for and potential achievement of such breakthroughs. The paired solar eclipse two weeks later in the first degree of Scorpio and conjunct Venus then offers further aid to technological and creative innovation and the opportunity to step over a threshold onto a more self-aware and potentially transformative path. From 1st to 10th October and exact on the 6th, a triangular Grand Trine in Fire signs between Uranus in Aries, Jupiter in Leo and Mars in Sagittarius is also likely to raise issues to do with ethics and justice.
And when considered with the energies of the lunar eclipse on the 8th their combined influence could usher significant revelations. Between 4th and 25th October Mercury retrograde in Scorpio/Libra also adds his influence to all the above alignments. He brings enlightened intuitive insights and the opportunity to inwardly re-evaluate, re-form and reflect throughout the period of the lunar eclipse and the Grand Trine, then to outwardly express and manifest the wisdom gained through and beyond the time of the solar eclipse. Finally in the mix of this three month period, on 14th December occurs the penultimate of the Uranus-Pluto squares whose final configuration is next March. These have been progressively ramping up the desire and urgency of the need to transform our collective consciousness and re-soulve old and dysfunctional issues. Where aspirations are being met, such change can be hopeful and peaceful; but where thwarted, the old paradigm continues to find expression through violence. Essentially, the combination of these alignments for the remainder of the year supports the heart-based courage to be bold; facilitating leadership and creativity that empowers and enables visionary inspiration and beneficial change. Tarot Card of the Week
The tarot is an ancient and powerful divination tool that has been used for centuries, its hard to pin point exactly where it originated but what we do know is that the rich and famous have consulted it to assist them in their life. Using the tarot the reader taps into it’s hidden mysteries and symbolic connections to provide the client with what lie ahead and from there they make their own choices and decisions. Each week I will be taking a look at one card from the deck and explaining what it means. Each week I will be taking a look at one card from the deck and explaining what it means.
This week I have chosen The Lovers:
Transformation and changes could be happening around you and at the moment you are standing watching what’s happening. Being an observer you are in a good position to look at what you should do next.
The lovers card is number six in the major arcane and is linked with the star sign of Gemini [the twins] it is the number associated with choices and decisions especially when connected with emotions and relationships.
Aquarius All the skills and knowledge you need for a job is within you
When you draw the lovers card there is something that needs your attention, a choice you may need to make and only you can do this. It is also the card of a loving union but even this type of relationship can run into problems from time to time and so I wouldn’t quite call it a worry, as it is more of a time to think about what you really want and then take an action.
and you are the master of your destiny. You are equipped to deal with things and even put them right so fate is on your side.
Pisces
A head full of things to sort and not a great deal of time to get to them could be a pain however, you can deal with this if you get into organization mode. There is not much that will beat you so get on the case now.
Get the Chelsea Look
This decision could be in a relationship that’s close to you, a personal one or even a business it all depends on the cards that surround it at the time as they help to tell the story.

The Beauty Big Review…Perfume testing with DKNY IT was a dreary Monday morning and I was convinced nothing was going to cheer me up. Then I met up with Natalie Silverman from Aramis Fragrances in the swanky Blythswood Hotel to chat all things perfume. The scents lifted my spirits as we spritzed and sniffed the latest beautiful fragrances to launch from the New York beauty brand. Firstly, Natalie showed me the latest fragrance, DKNY MYNY fronted by the fabulous Rita Ora. As soon as Natalie pulls it out the box I am intrigued by the packaging. The silver cap is shaped like a New York skyline and the clear heart-shaped bottle shows the peachy pink colour of the perfume, which is sweet and fruity with
hints of musk. The top notes include raspberries and pink pepper, heart notes of Egyptian jasmine and freesia, finished with patchouli, vanilla and musk; this is a perfect scent for an everyday perfume. One application has been lasting me throughout the day as it’s quite a ‘punchy’ perfume. We then moved on to the DKNY Be Delicious Sparkling Apple Limited Edition Collection. Inspired by the “glitz and glamour” of festive parties, it makes a perfect choice for the upcoming holiday season. Based on the original Be Delicious, the apple shaped bottles each with a glittery lid, which looks gorgeous on the dressing table. The scent features the classic green apple top notes, with
watermelon, rose drops, violet leaves and sandalwood. It’s a fragrance that will suit those who love the original but want something a bit more ‘wow’ for party season. Next we had a sniff at Golden Delicious, described as a “playful, yet sensual” scent. With golden delicious apple and plum at the heart of the fragrance it is a more grown up version of the Be Delicious family. The sparkling grapefruit and juicy cassis combined with fiery ginger root makes this a slightly spicy, musky scent, perfect for date night. Now for my favourite bottle… the pink one! I fell in love with it as soon as I set eyes on it, all pink and sparkly - I was like a magpie! An ideal fragrance

for cocktails with the girls, Be Delicious Fresh Blossom has top notes crisp apple, tangerine and pear followed by warm, sensual ambrette seeds. The final perfume was DKNY Women Sparkling Fall Edition. In its tall skyscraper bottle, this limited edition version of the classic aims to “bring out a woman’s glamorous side – making her feel sexy and confident for a night out in the city”. Grapefruit, blackcurrant and plum notes topped off with rose and pink pepper, make this an indulgent fragrance yet seductive. A perfect accessory to that LBD, I can’t wait to wear it hitting the town on Saturday night.

crashed. Her jewellery range is now set to sell out, after launching on Wednesday. Inspired by family heirlooms and pieces Millie collected while travelling; she heard saying she enjoyed designing her range so much it didn’t feel like work.
Featuring statement charm and collar necklaces, bracelets and drop earrings, the 23-piece collection is – as they would say in Chelsea - simply fabulous. Luckily for us, you don’t need a Chelsea budget to buy Millie’s trinkets. Prices start from £10. By KAITLIN McMANUS
Now is an ideal time to choose a new fragrance as we head into autumn. But, before you hit the shops, here are my top tips on picking a perfume…
NEW ADDITIONS: The Ox and Finch (above) and The Gannet are now also in the Michelin Guide.
Recently reviewed: CAFÉ Zecchino is, without a doubt, an East End gem. It’s long had a reputation for good food at a great price, and its take-away counter is hugely popular with both locals and tourists alike, but it’s also increasingly becoming an option for special occasions and dining out.
2. Have a coffee break while you are in between stores. Coffee beans act the same way as a sorbet does in between meals, it cleanses the palate. Ask your barista for a few beans to sniff, if you get strange looks, explain why!
SITUATED in the bustling harbour district of Leith, and only a short distance away from all the attractions of the city centre, Malmaison Edinburgh is the perfect base for exploring all that this upcoming area has to offer.
We were happily surprised to find that our room was, in fact, a suite – overlooking the waterfront with a perfectly luxurious roll-top bath and a bottle of house wine readily waiting to be opened.
3. Spray it on your skin to see what it will really smell like. Different skin types will have an effect on the overall scent, if you have dry skin, the fragrance will disappear quicker. This is why… 4. You should invest in the body lotion to match, (PS… or if you’re on a budget, apply Vaseline where you spray perfume). Beauty insiders have a secret technique known as ‘layering’ the perfume, making it last longer.

As soon as you step through the door, the causal Italian-bistro style atmosphere makes you feel strangely at home. It’s like being invited into your (Italian) friend’s dining room, on a night that they decided to make a bit of an effort. There are flowers, candles and some “so-bad-it’salmost-good” mood music playing in the background. My friend decided to start with the nachos, whilst I opted for garlic

mushrooms – both of which were brought out promptly and were far larger portions than either of us expected. The nachos were piled high with salsa, jalapenos and a generous topping of cheese (some places don’t seem understand how key this is to nachos) and my mushrooms, perfectly cooked, were served with crispy bread. After pretty big start portions, we were both feeling like our main options might have been made in an “eyes bigger than our bellies” moment. I’d gone for the 12”in Meat Feast pizza, which was exactly what the name would suggest – pretty much every type of meat possible piled
high onto a very tasty, crispy pizza base. My friend had chosen the lasagne, served with massive slices of garlic bread. She admitted defeat about half way through, around the same time as I realised I couldn’t possibly finish the whole pizza. Luckily for us, our friendly waitress from earlier kindly offered us a takeaway box. We had pretty much decided dessert was out of the question when I spotted the Café Zecchino Surprise Sunday and determinedly stated it wouldn’t really be a full review unless we had tried all three courses. We split the gigantic concoction of different ice-cream flavours, sponge, toffee pieces and sauces, topped off with Café Zecchino wafers (and finished with a mini Italian flag, of course). Now ridiculously full, we slowly finished our drinks, paid the bill and agreed we’d be back soon…with emptier bellies or less hungry eyes next time.

Staying at the ‘Mother of all Mals’ After a quick taxi ride from Edinburgh’s Waverly Station, we arrived at the hotel, where stylish decor and a sleek reception area awaited us.
1. Don’t spray a scent, smell it and buy it. Most base notes need up to 30 minutes to settle before they are noticed. Spray it on a card, leave the shop and go back if you like it.
By KAITLIN McMANUS
THREE restaurants in Glasgow have been included in the latest edition of the prestigious Michelin Guide. The Gannet in Argyle Street, and The Ox and Finch on Sauchiehall Street were both awarded a Bib Gourmand – which highlights “good food at moderate prices”.
By KAITLIN McMANUS
YOU know what it’s like, you go out with the great intention of nipping in and choosing a perfume and before you know it the shops are closing. By the end of the day you have sniffed so many they all end up smelling the same and you feel a bit woozy.
5. However, don’t spray it on your skin until you know you like it. Spritzing ten different perfumes on your wrist and you’re bound to get them mixed up! Spray on cards until you find one you love, and then try it on your wrist.

After a soak in the fantastically deep bath, we made our way down to the bar for some pre-feasting drinks. Opting for a bottle of the House Sauvignon Blanc to start, our lovely waitress brought us such a large
amount of beautiful crusty-bread that we decided to dive straight into the main courses. After a difficult decision, my friend decided on the Grilled Pollock Coco de Painpol, with Piperade and Basil Oil, whilst I opted for the Calves Liver Persillade, served with Parmentier Potatoes. We also ordered a portion of the handcut fries to share (these come highly recommended). We weren’t disappointed with our choices – the liver was unbelievably tender and deliciously juicy, and I was eagerly informed that the Grilled Pollock was fantastically light and perfectly cooked. After a quick rest, and with our glassed refilled, we moved onto dessert. Again, there were so many tantalising options to choose from and, after a debate over sharing (not sharing won, unsurprisingly), we decided on a portion of the Strawberry and Champagne Jelly with frozen yoghurt and the Chocolate Fondue,
served with delicious elderflower marshmallows and a selection of summer fruits and biscotti. Both were equally delicious and beautifully presented, with the attention to detail seen elsewhere in the hotel remaining constant throughout the course of our dinner. In the morning we lazily made our way downstairs to the Bar for breakfast, which is a relaxed event, with a buffet and/or cooked breakfast option.
Determined to fit in some more delicious food, I choose Waffles with bacon and maple syrup (note: these are bigger than anticipated), whilst my friend came back from the breakfast buffet laden with croissants, fruit and muesli. I eagerly attempted to finish the waffles, but was defeated, and after a second cup of coffee, it was time for us to pack our bags and leave the Mal.

Microsoft make historic launch in China
Listen to...
By Ross Swanson
MICROSOFT have made history this past week after they became the first company to launch a video games console in China after a 14 year ban on devices was lifted back in January. The Xbox One went on sale for 4,229 yuan (£430) in the planet’s most populated country to much anticipation from deprived customers. The machine has been available in the UK since 2013. The launch, being considered a success by company insiders, means that Microsoft have beaten competitors Sony and Nintendo to the consolestarved nation, and could gain a dominating lead in the lucrative market whilst others play catch up. A total of 10 games were made available to players on day one in China. Amongst those chosen were the highly rated platformer Rayman: Legends, and popular racing simulator Forza 5. However, Chinese players do not have
access to all games on the console, with only a select few government approved titles being released at launch. Officials have stated that games which depict graphic violence such as Call of Duty and Halo will not go on sale in the country - ever. Microsoft have announced that 70 games, all to conform to strict government guidelines, are currently being developed in support of the system. Of course, it’s only a matter of time before someone finds a way to hack the region-locked hardware and gain access to the banned material. The original console ban itself created a massive surge in black market demand for consoles and their accompanying games in the first place. Despite being in its third incarnation, this is the first time an Xbox machine has gone on sale in the country as the government prohibition came into effect just months before Microsoft’s debut effort was released in 2001.
With 160 cities each filled with over one million people in China alone, a head-start here could spell game over for the opposition. The news of a home run hit will likely be a relief to Xbox chiefs after a relatively disastrous launch in Japan earlier this year. The message then was clear: Japan belongs to Sony and Nintendo. Microsoft’s release in China might
be considered doubly historic then if it becomes the first Western console to crack the notoriously closed Asian gaming market. Head of Microsoft’s Xbox division, Phil Spencer was said to be “delighted” with the launch. He said:
global expansion plan. Every new market launch is unique and we’re grateful to our fans for their patience and enthusiasm. We will continue to work closely with our partner BesTV to bring exciting games, entertainment and app experiences to delight gamers across China.”
“This milestone is significant for both our partnership with China and our

Strictly Come Dancing Saturday 27th September, 7.00pm, BBC One YOU know it’s autumn when
everyone starts talking about Strictly Come Dancing and the X Factor again, and this weekend saw the latter being overtaken in ratings by the host of “celebrities”, including Judy Murray and Scott Mills, attempting to impress us with their ballroom skills. Poor Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills ended up bottom of the leaderboard, whilst one of the biggest disappointments was rugby’s Thom Evans – who was hotly tipped to be a favourite but
turned out to be stiffer than the shows former host, Bruce Forsyth. The standout performance was from Frankie Bridge of The Saturdays, who shot to the top of the leaderboard thanks to her romantic, accomplished and umbrella-accessorised waltz. Tennis coach Judy Murray struggled last night and looked shaky throughout. She was joined down the bottom of the board by Mrs Brown’s Boys actress Jennifer Gibney and MasterChef’s Gregg Wallace.

See this.. ANATHEMA are not only probably the best band you’ve never heard of, they’re probably the best British band touring today – period. The Liverpudlian progressive rockers have amassed a huge following in continental Europe, but seem to have had trouble cracking the market in their native homeland. They arrived back in Glasgow in support of their latest album Distant Satellites, which has received almost universal

critical acclaim around the world. The band opened with epic The Lost Song, Part 1 to a sold out audience in the ABC’s lesser known sister room downstairs, before nestling the crowd with the gentle companion piece The Lost Song, Part 2 (it should be noted that not all of their songs are titled as such...apart from The Lost song, Part 3) Vocalists Vincent Cavanagh and Lee Douglas showed excellent form and managed to both harmonise and contrast in
equal parts without ever hitting a duff note. The set was tailored for newer fans of the band, with the majority of the material taken from both their new album and their previous effort Weather Systems. However, their choice of songs beautifully displayed the diverse balance between tender passages and powerful uplifting choruses which the band have made their signature sound. After two hours of intense audio melancholy lofted at the crowd, Anathema
Watch this.. PAULO Nutini’s new video for ‘Diana’, taken from his 3rd Studio album ‘Caustic Love’, is nothing if not incredibly raunchy. The track is a perfect blend of blues and jazz, combined with a modern twist and Nutini’s unmistakable vocals. Completely chilled out and yet ever-soseductive, the new track draws listeners in to a private moment of passion. The video shows pretty intimate footage of Paulo and his girlfriend spending time together at a bar and them enjoying a
STEPHEN Fry’s unique comedic style and bumbling, Tweed-wearing public persona have amused and entertained the British public for many years, with programmes ranging from Blackadder to QI becoming enduring TV favourites. More recently, Fry’s at times turbulent private life, and his battles with mental illness have revealed a far more troubled side to this much loved British treasure. In this, Fry’s third memoir, he focuses

on life throughout the 80’s and 90’s, at a time when his glittering career was taking off. Fry frankly describes his 15 years spent as, “to all intents and purposes, a high-functioning cocaine addict” and, perhaps controversially, includes both Buckingham Palace and the House of Lords in the lengthy, two page list of palaces and establishments where he snorted the illegal Class A drug. Although apologetic from start to finish, Fry at
times appears to revel in describing the increasingly out of control ‘high life’ he was so much a part of, leaving the reader unsure as to whether he is fondly remembering the era or condemning it. In addition, although firmly denouncing the ‘celebrity memoir’, Fry has opted to eke out this third biography, including a lengthy ‘re-tread’ of his first two autobiographies, which may perhaps leave some readers feeling a little short changed by the lack of new material.

MINOR Delilah might not yet be a band name familiar to most, but thanks to some clever promotion on social media, and as a result of well publicised busking and street gigs in the city centre, Minor Delilah are steadily making a name for themselves. treat fans to the rockier Fragile Dreams as a final encore before leaving a captive audience emotionally exhausted. It’s obvious that Anathema are criminally underrated and are unfairly stigmatised for having recorded music as a metal band almost 20 years ago, something which they have long since outgrown and shed. Overall, ‘More Fool Me’ paints a picture of Fry as a complex and conflicted personality, battling guilt and regret, whilst simultaneously celebrating his life, and the friends and family he loves so dearly. As a reader, I felt a little like I imagine Fry’s long term QI co-star Alan Davies must do on the show… slightly (if gently) patronised and just a touch confused. Make your home cosy for autumn! DARKER evenings, falling leaves, colder nights…now that summer has decided to leave us for another year, we have now had to come to terms with the fact that it’s autumn. One thing that softens the blow for me is shopping.

After I have stocked up on a new winter coat, scarves and boots, it is then time to shop for the home. It doesn’t have to be expensive, as a few key pieces really make a difference. Snuggle up under a throw, light some candles, grab a hot chocolate and aaaah… Don’t you just love autumn? Here are a few great tips to make your home feel warm and cosy for autumn… 1. Swap your bright summery cushions for some cosy faux fur ones. You can pick up some great ones on the high street and all reasonably priced too. Drape a cosy throw over the corner of the sofa for easy reach when your chilly watching the telly.

2. Nothing says “autumn’s here!” like spicy, scented candles. Look for candles with a winter berries, cinnamon, clove or spiced apple scent to provide instant comfort. Yankee Candles are great, or try Primark for budget candle buys. 3. Invest in a lamp for when the nights start to become darker earlier. Use a lower watt light bulb to give the room a warm glow. Fairy lights are also a great, low cost way to give a bit of light without being too glaring. Try white or red for a cosy feel, without being too ‘Christmassy’. Wrap them up and sit in a clear glass vase or hang over your mantelpiece.

Almost 1,700 homes to receive warm-home grants A £4.5 MILLION energy efficiency initiative will benefit more than 1,600 council households and housing association homes, Housing Minister Margaret Burgess has announced.
Houses and flats in the social rented sector will be fitted with measures to make them warmer and cheaper to heat.
Margaret Burgess believes the fund will “make a real difference to families who are struggling to make ends meet”. The Housing Minister revealed where the £4.5 million Green Homes Cashback Scheme will be allocated, with funding being awarded to 24 registered social landlords and local authorities
Mrs Burgess said: “It is scandalous that fuel poverty exists in an energy rich country like Scotland, that’s why this Government has spent almost a quarter of a billion pounds over a three year period on energy efficiency measures. “Through the Green Homes Cashback Scheme we are helping social landlords and councils upgrade their properties with energy efficiency
“Making sure everyone in Scotland has access to good quality housing is a vital part of the Scottish Government’s drive to secure economic growth, promote social justice, strengthen communities and tackle inequality.”
isn’t just focusing on supporting people on heating their homes, Margaret explains. “We are also protecting vulnerable tenants from the impacts of the most damaging welfare reforms, which is why we have protected 71,000 households by investing £55 million to mitigate the harmful impact of the ‘Bedroom Tax’.”

Here is a run through of a few of its features… Faster charging rate
The BMW i Wallbox Pro offers a faster charging rate than the first, the BMW i Wallbox Pure. With a charging rate of up to 7.4 kW, the BMW i Wallbox Pro supports very fast charging of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The high-voltage battery of the BMW i3 takes under three hours for an 80% charge. Information about the charging status can be viewed on a smartphone or tablet by using the BMW i Wallbox Remote app.
Easy to use
The BMW i Wallbox Pro is operated using a 7-inch colour touchscreen display, which offers optimised monitoring of the charging process and allows users to choose their own individual settings. LED fibre-optic strips at the sides of the wallbox indicate the current charge status and are visible from a considerable distance. The charging plug can be picked up and connected to the vehicle socket using just one hand. Further userfriendly features include the 3.5-metre charging cable. It is energy efficient
The BMW i Wallbox Pro is unique among home charging stations in the extent to which home-generated electricity can be used in the charging process, if you have a home solar system. The wallbox detects the availability of solar power and immediately uses it for charging.

If no home-generated energy is available, power from the grid is used instead.
NEW images have been released of the super-exclusive new Aston Martin Lagonda, set to arrive in 2015 with a price tag reportedly in excess of £400,000.
It’s clever
Using the touchscreen, it’s possible to display a weather report showing current temperatures, daily maximum and minimum temperatures, frost warnings and forecasts for the coming days.
The luxury car is to be sold in strictly limited numbers, primarily to Middle Eastern buyers. Aston Martin plans hand-build just 100 of these cars then sell them to a select group of customers on an invitation-only basis.
The BMW i Wallbox Pro also provides an administrator function that can keep a history for different users. Up to three user profiles can be set up, e.g. for billing purposes.
It’s expected that a 565bhp+ version of Aston’s thunderous 5.9-litre V12 will take pride of place and there’s certainly room for it under that expansive bonnet. Drive is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission and performance should be worthy of the Aston Martin brand. Expect a top speed close to 200mph and 0-62mph pace around the 5-second mark.
The BMW i Wallbox Pro is an Original BMW i Accessory and is available in all European markets. At the end of the year it will also go on sale in markets in Asia, Africa, the American continent and the Middle East. The BMW i Wallbox Pro can be installed both in closed garages and in covered outdoor areas. By Kaitlin McManus

The DVLA said 6,000 applications a minute were made online the night before the new change came in, forcing the registration agency to shut at midnight.
On Wednesday, they added “We are currently experiencing high volumes of traffic to our online vehicle tax service please keep trying. Sorry for the inconvenience.” Vehicle owners will no longer have to display the vehicle excise duty (VED) disc on their screens, with the system becoming “electronic” in that VED will be renewed either online or at Post Office branches. The Government has said the abolition will eventually save the DVLA around £7 million a year.
LUXURY NEW ASTON: The Lagonda will be for sale to a select group of customers by invitation only
Developed by Aston’s design chief Marek Reichmann, the car’s exterior styling borrows heavily from the 1976 Lagonda’s iconic wedge-shape, as well as featuring more modern touches that reference the Rapide.

‘Jammer’ stopping mobile use in car could come to UK A DEVICE that stops motorists from communicating via mobile phone whilst they’re driving is being offered to UK network providers. ‘Groove’ alerts mobile companies when their customers are driving, allowing them to block calls, texts and social media until the journey ends.
American entrepreneur Scott Tibbits worked on developing the invention after a colleague was hit and killed by a teenager who was texting while driving. It has been described as a little device about half the size of a pack of cards. It plugs in to your phone and can detect when the car is moving. From that point forward it notifies the telecoms company that the person is driving. It prevents the driver to
receive incoming communications if the car moves at more than 5mph. The phone is then free to use when the engine is switched off. Driving whilst using a mobile phone is a criminal offence in Scotland. If the driver is convicted of “driving with mobile phone”, you may pay a £100 fine and take 3 penalty points on your licence without going to court. If you already have 9 points or more on your licence, you will be prosecuted in court for mobile phone driving. If you are convicted, the court will put 3 points on your licence and give you a fine of up to £1000. If the offence is particularly serious, the court has the option of banning you from driving. Cars and technology are growing ever closer with more automated driving appearing every year. It’s only a matter of time before we ease into selfdriving cars. Already there are cars that can park themselves, brake to stop collisions and know to keep you in your lane.
This year also sees plenty of cars pushing big numbers, but not just in the conventional power way. Rather they are pushing the limits of how far a car can travel on a tank of fuel. With numbers like 141mpg it’s clear being fast isn’t everything anymore when it comes to cutting edge car construction. But don’t worry hybrid electric cars aren’t just about range. Plenty of sports car names are now adding electric to give even more power. This year has seen plenty of plug-in hybrids on show that deliver breath-taking power without guzzling petrol at a ridiculous rate, sort of.

Youngsters chance for Scotland
Richard Hughes overtakes in jockeys’ title race
Scotland v Georgia: 2016 European Championships Group D Qualifier
CHAMPION Flat jockey Richard Hughes took the lead in the title race for the first time this season when completing a double at Salisbury.
Ibrox Stadium, Saturday 11th October (Kick-off: 5pm) SCOTLAND manager Gordon Strachan insisted home-based players can still develop their talents after handing call-ups to exiled pair Stevie May and Ryan Gauld. Only three of the players named in the squad against play in Scotland Aberdeen defender Mark Reynolds and Celtic pair Craig Gordon and Scott Brown. May has scored three times since arriving at Hillsborough, while Gauld was recently included in Sporting’s Champions League squad.
Former Dundee United midfielder Gauld, 18, has previously represented Scotland at under-19 and under-21 level, while former St Johnstone forward May has eight under-21 caps.
The 41-year-old leads Ryan Moore by 145 wins to 144 after scoring on Elysian Flyer and Musicora. Moore has indicated he is likely to ride abroad for the final days of the season, which finishes on 8 November.
Strachan said he may call up a third young player, depending on injuries and call-offs. Glasgow City News predicts: Strachan’s team will take forward the confidence and skill they displayed in the second half of the match against Germany earlier this month, where they were narrowly defeated by the current World Champions. Score: Scotland 2-1 Georgia
Hughes, who is seeking a third straight title, missed the start of the campaign in March after breaking his back in a fall in Dubai. STEVIE BOY: Youngster Stevie May (above) and Ryan Gauld have been called-up for the forthcoming Euro qualifier.
Moore was champion in 2006, 2008 and 2009. The 31-year-old has said he would like to win the title again, but that it was not his sole ambition for the season.

Shotts set for win against Ayr Glenafton v Shotts Bon Accord, Saturday 4th October DEFEATS at the hands of Auchinleck Talbot, Beith and Kilbirnie Ladeside last weekend has acted to take the shine of the Lanarkshire outfit’s achievements in taking the scalps of Petershill and Arthurlie on their return to the Super Premier Division top flight. This somewhat erratic early-season form has not prevented McDonald remaining positive about his side’s chances of coming good at Loch Park even though he is resigned to being without the penalty-box prowess of striker Sean McKenna who has been made available for transfer at his own request. No reasons are forthcoming from Hannah Park circles, however it’s believed an angry exchange of dressing room views during the interval against Kilbirnie, with Shotts trailing 2-1, culminated in veteran Gary McStay replacing top scorer McKenna.
International Sporting News
Rory McIlroy’s singles win set tone for Europe Ryder Cup victory EUROPEAN WIN: McIlroy’s points sealed the deal for Europe in the Ryder Cup
TAKING NO PRISONERS: Tam McDonald leads his team against Glenafton this Saturday McKenna whose former clubs include Petershill, Girvan and Bellshill Athletic has an impressive scoring record with Shotts of 32 goals in 40 starting appearances and his marksman abilities are sure to be in demand. Glasgow City News predicts: Despite McKenna’s decision to leave the club, Manager Tam McDonald doesn’t seem concerned – we think the boss is in fighting mode for the match against his former club. Score: Glenafton 1 – 3 Shotts Bon Accord
IT wasn’t one man who sealed the Ryder Cup victory for Europe, but McIlroy’s win over Rickie Fowler, providing the first of the points needed in the closing round of singles on the final day, was the perfect opening movement to a glorious symphony of victory, Europe’s eighth in 10 years over the United States.
McIlroy, one of those Floridians, took just under three hours to remind his West Palm Beach neighbour Fowler, as well as a heaving gallery intoxicated on the rolling drama of matchplay, why he is the best golfer in the world – now and perhaps for a little while to come. He struck seven birdies and an eagle to win 5&4 on the mildest day of the week, but one charged with plenty of electricity nonetheless, as the Americans fought hard on several
fronts to extend the battle into the late afternoon. As the visitors struggled to overhaul a 10-6 morning deficit, there was hardly a cheap point earned anywhere on the course, and – despite the margin of the win – that applied to McIlroy’s high-grade match against his friend Fowler, whose splendid recovery after an early wobble arrived too late. The world No1 had to play consistently well to win.

Thousands to take to the streets for Great Scottish Run Issue 2 | 3rd - 9th October 2014 | Published by Caledonia Publications
Olympic gold medallist Haile Gebrselassie delighted to be back in Glasgow this weekend
JUST two months after the closing ceremony of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and Glasgow is once again in preparation to host a major city wide sporting event. The Bank of Scotland’s Great Scottish Run events will take place this weekend and look set to see thousands of pounds raised for charities across the county, including: Parkinson’s UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, and Yorkhill Children’s Charity.
The half marathon will run from George Square, across the city centre, before finally arriving at Glasgow Green. The route will take participants past some of the city’s most famous landmarks like The Hydro and the Finnieston Crane. The 13+ mile course will host events on Saturday and Sunday, and will see both charity and professional races take place.
STAR ATTRACTION: Ethiopian star, Haile Gebrselassie, is taking part in this weekend’s events.
Those not wishing to undertake the gruelling task of running the full half marathon (21k) have been able to opt to run at modified 10k course instead. Fans hoping to see European Gold Medallist Jo Pavey running on Sunday,
were left disappointed, as it emerged mid-day on Wednesday that the 41-year-old had suffered a heel injury which will keep her from competition. Pavey, who made history in Zurich at the European Championships in August, when she became the oldest woman ever to claim a gold medal, was expected to headline the race. The English Commonwealth medal winner, and mother of two, leaves Ethiopian star, Haile Gebrselassie, as the event’s main attraction. The Olympic gold medallist and former World Half Marathon Champion, also 41, will be looking to defend his title after winning the event in 2013. He told The Daily Record last week: “I have fantastic memories of my first race in Scotland and I am delighted to be coming back to race in the Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run for a second time. “It’s a great race with a great atmosphere and the organisation is superb.” His time of 61:09 broke Scottish half marathon records and remains the time to beat.
