FENESTRATION INDUSTRY

SHOULD LEVERAGE ITS ENVIRONMENTAL CREDENTIALS

The fenestration industry should leverage its environmental credentials to attract new entrants. That is the call from Building Our Skills and one of its National Partners, CNC Recycling. The ‘Making Fenestration, Glass and Glazing a Career of Choice’ campaign and the nationwide PVCU window recycling specialist company have already begun to make inroads into this area.

Ian Ward, CNC Recycling’s Sales & Purchasing Director, explains: “There are many potential new employees for the fenestration industry who want to do something positive for the environment through their career choice. In particular, this applies to the younger generation. We took an active role in the Building Our Skills’ industry-bespoke careers festivals earlier in the year, and were blown away by the level of interest we received from youngsters telling us exactly this. They simply didn’t know that landfill has been replaced by recycling, and that the main players in the PVCU window industry take minimising its environmental impact so seriously. With approximately 84% of all new windows fitted being PVCU in the UK, they could see that this is very important. By the end of their visits, youngsters and teachers alike had gained a clearer insight into this aspect of the industry, and went away with a far more positive view of it from an environmental perspective.

BOS & CNC RECYCLING: ‘FENESTRATION INDUSTRY SHOULD LEVERAGE ITS ENVIRONMENTAL CREDENTIALS TO ATTRACT NEW TALENT’

“I’m not saying that new recruits would necessarily want to work in the recycling sector, simply that they are far more likely to pick the fenestration industry for employment if they do not have negative or incorrect preconceptions about its environmental credentials. We’ll be continuing this work at next year’s BOS careers festivals too and I hope that industry employers get on board with promoting fenestration as a good move for anyone wanting a career in an industry doing its best for the environment.”

Mark Handley, Partnerships Manager of Building Our Skills agrees:

CONTINUED PRAISE FOR STELLAR

Stellar, the multi-award-winning aluminium window and door system from Epwin Window Systems, continues to be a favourite among installers thanks to its fast-fit properties and unique flush aesthetics.

Josh Fullalove, Project Manager at V. Fullalove Installations Ltd, strongly endorses Stellar’s benefits. He said: “Having installed numerous aluminium windows and doors over the years, I can confidently say that Stellar is the most user-friendly system on the market. Its knock-in beads are a game changer, eliminating the need for time consuming wedge gasketing, which are often too loose or tight and historically shrink back over time.”

He continued: “Features such as the adjustable rollers on the slimline bifold door allow for precise up-and-down adjustments using an Allen key, ensuring the perfect fit after installation and glazing. It’s an overall impressive system and installs as quickly and easily as a PVC-U system.”

V Fullalove, who purchased their Stellar windows and doors from Prestige Aluminium Essex Ltd, has recently completed several high-end projects where only the best products will suffice. Josh explains: “We have undertaken some fantastic high-end projects, including several barn conversions and a prestigious bespoke new-build complex. The level of finish and aesthetics were crucial in meeting the developer’s vision. Stellar, with its unique flush aesthetics and wide range of colour options, was instrumental in helping us to secure these projects.”

He adds: “It’s an easy window and door system to sell, and because it’s a complete system—offering casement windows, residential doors, bifold doors, tilt and turn windows, bay windows and sliding doors – it delivers uniform aesthetics that perfectly complement an entire property.”

Despite being an exceptionally modern window and door system, Stellar has gained popularity across various property styles. Josh commented: “The flush casement aesthetics of Stellar closely resemble traditional timber flush casement windows, offering great versatility for older refurbishment projects.”

NEW RESIDENTIAL WINDOW DESIGN LAUNCHED BY SCHÜCO UK

The new AWS 80 SC window system from Schüco delivers simplified fabrication without sacrificing the quality associated with the Schüco brand. The company’s latest innovation comes with its signature sleek sightlines, elegant design, and exceptional thermal efficiency.

Designed specifically for the UK market, the window was developed in close collaboration with Schüco fabricator partners to create a product ideal for their needs. The introduction of the new window system closely follows the recent launch of the new ASE 51 PD Schüco panoramic sliding door.

The AWS 80 SC window system is engineered for simplicity, using as few elements as possible for easier manufacture. Screw ports to connect mullion and transom allow the outer frame to be constructed first with inner sections added afterwards, speeding up the fabrication process.

Despite its simple construction, the window doesn’t compromise on aesthetics, offering narrow sightlines of 46mm for fixed lights and 74mm for opening units. Its flush design enables multiple configurations while negating the need for numerous different components or a dummy vent.

Improved thermal performance means the AWS 80 SC surpasses current standards required by Part L and is anticipated to comply with the upcoming Future Homes Standard.

Security is also ensured as the AWS 80 SC launches with PAS 24 certification for the whole system, having been tested with every configuration and add-on profile in every possible combination.

Duncan Grover, Head of Product Management, Schüco UK comments: “We’re proud of the significant innovation in product development that our new window and sliding door systems represent. These high specification products have been designed to deliver improved technical performance while streamlining fabrication processes for our partners.

COLOURING IN THE FENESTRATION INDUSTRY

In this session we talk about everything to do with colour, from the boring to the sublime, technical developments, sustainability, consumer demands, Geri the Giraffe and Kolorseal, now in its 20th year of business.

Q) Painting in our industry has become the norm but you’ve been painting PVCu since 2004, long before it became popular. Can you explain why you became involved in this side of the industry as you were pretty much a pioneer?

Well, let’s face it, White, Mahogany and Oak were all pretty boring weren’t they?

Q) You moved from PVCu to a whole range of materials including GRP, aluminium and other metals. Getting paint to adhere properly to materials like GRP was always an issue so how did you discover the correct methodology?

Just as industry standards change so do the products and technical developments across the sector. Being able to adapt to a changing market is so important. One of my bugbears though is regarding painting gaskets. Even the paint companies agree that whilst they can be painted, they will crack and lose their adhesion – trying to convince people otherwise is simply not right in my book.

As with all things, through Kolorseal I learned that there are paints and there are paints. Our paint has stood the test of time. Preparation of GRP is very important as some GRP skins can contain Xylene.

Q) Paints have changed radically over the years with demand for eco friendly products. How has Kolorseal adapted to those demands?

With sustainability now in focus more than ever, consumers tend to look at the products they are purchasing and how beneficial they are for the environment. Currently, KOLORSEAL window coatings are manufactured from the highest quality raw materials and these fulfil the highest criteria. However, having the best materials for the job comes with many special health and safety conformities and testing, which doesn’t come cheap.

STELLAR PROVES ITS VERSATILITY IN DESIGNERINSPIRED NEW BUILD PROJECT

Stellar Aluminium windows and doors have been used to great effect by GD Windows in a contemporary architect-designed new build property in Pembrokeshire.

Set in a rural location close to Poppit Sands beach, the plot offered far-reaching views of the tidal estuary which was integral to its aesthetic appeal. As such, the new build property needed to be built to exacting design standards that would make the most of the extraordinary location.

GD Windows was appointed as the window and door contractor for the build and the Stellar Aluminium system was specified throughout to meet the project’s requirements.

Gwyn Davies, Director at GD Windows, said: “We were delighted to secure this project, which gave us an exciting opportunity to demonstrate the full potential of Stellar Aluminium in a high-end build.”

One highlight of the detached property is an inverted bay window, which featured a door in its centre creating a striking architectural element. In the kitchen, a 1.8m x 1.2m Stellar Lift & Slide Door was repurposed as a window to blend functionality with style.

Gwyn commented: “Stellar’s adaptability allowed the architect to deliver their vision for the property. The inverted bay adds significant visual interest, while the innovative kitchen window design maximises the view.”

Elsewhere, the project involved six Fully Flush Residential Doors, three Flush Tilt & Turn Windows, five Fully Flush Windows and a distinctive triangle-shaped fixed pane window.

All products were triple glazed to maximise the property’s thermal efficiency, ensuring comfort and sustainability in the home.

The specification was completed with a striking colourway of Agate Grey on the internal frames to deliver understated elegance and RAL 6033 mint turquoise on the exterior to echo the vibrant hues of the estuary.

Carl F Groupco is highlighting sustained hardware demand for casement windows. Owen Coop, CEO of Carl F Groupco, explains: “While the industry has recently shifted its focus towards feature windows and their value-added potential, for most fabricators it is the standard casement window that remains a core product. A STELLAR VIEW ENHANCES PEMBROKESHIRE

NEW

BUILD PROPERTY

Stellar flush windows and doors from Epwin Window Systems have been installed in a striking contemporary new build project in the scenic Pilot Street area of St. Dogmaels near Cardigan in Pembrokeshire. The bespoke split-level residential property has been designed to fully capitalise on its prime coastal location.

The products were manufactured and installed by GD Windows and Gwyn Davies, Director, said: “The architectural vision for this home was to maximise the natural light and make the most of its unique coastal position. The Stellar aluminium system, with its slim sightlines, played a crucial role in achieving this. Its super-slim profile enabled us to open-up the rear aspect of the property across both levels, allowing light to flood the living spaces and provide uninterrupted views of the estuary. The result is a contemporary, light-filled home that truly connects with its surroundings.”

A standout feature of the detached build was the installation of three large Stellar lift and slide patio doors, each measuring 3.3m x 2.5m, complemented by overhead curtain walling with fixed lights across the upper rear elevation. A further three Stellar lift and slide doors, each 2.5m x 2.1m, were installed to the ground floor level.

Elsewhere in the build, three internal screens with duplex bars were fitted, alongside four flush Stellar windows that provide a clean, minimalist aesthetic.

To complement the home’s contemporary stye, all Stellar products were manufactured with anthracite grey external frames and a clean white finish on the interior. As is standard with Stellar, the finish used a durable powder coating with a marinegrade finish that meets the Qualicoat specification, helping to ensure longevity and resilience in the challenging coastal environment.

FENTRADE SHOWCASES EXCEPTIONAL ATTENTION TO DETAIL IN HERITAGE PROJECT

Specialist aluminium fabricator Fentrade has demonstrated the skill of its team on a recent project for longstanding customer Windows Are Us.

The project involved the manufacture of several aluminium screens and doors using the Jack Aluminium SD70 Heritage system. These frames needed to be custom-manufactured to fit an entire corner of a building. Additionally, one side of the building featured three different levels, yet every astragal bar and transom needed to align perfectly, ensuring the high end aesthetics were delivered.

Chris Reeks, Managing Director at Fentrade, takes up the story: “It was back to the drawing board for the Fentrade team! We went old-school, using graph paper and pencils to carefully calculate the dimensions across the frames as a whole. Even a single miscalculation would have thrown the entire project off balance, so absolute precision was critical.”

The Fentrade team worked closely with Windows Are Us and their trade customer to ensure every detail was meticulously addressed. This dedication extended to revising the layout from scratch to accommodate changes in the overall frame dimensions, ensuring the project’s precision and quality remained uncompromised.

The results have more than justified the effort involved. The Jack Aluminium SD70 Heritage system has given the homeowner the traditional aesthetics they desired, along with the modern advantages of contemporary aluminium glazing. At the same time, the meticulous calculations and precision manufacturing have ensured that every sightline aligned perfectly, delivering the exceptional high-quality finish the project demanded.

Chris concluded: “There were countless hours of work involved in this project, and seeing the finished result brings immense satisfaction. It looks outstanding and stands as a true testament to the skills and expertise of the Fentrade team.”

Windows Are Us is based in Stratford-upon-Avon and works across Warwickshire and the Cotswolds. Its team has considerable experience in the home improvement industry, and it brings a professional and detailed approach to every project.

A STELLAR FEATURE OF NEW £1.35M VILLAGE HALL

A nine-metre Stellar Aluminium Slimline Bifold Door is a central feature of a brand-new village hall in Aberporth in Ceredigion in West Wales.

The Stellar Aluminium door, together with sixteen fully flush Stellar Aluminium windows, seven fixed frame Stellar windows and one 5 x 2.5 metre five pane bifold door were manufactured and installed by local company GD Windows. Tristan Jones, Sales Manager at GD Windows, said: “Most of our team grew up in Aberporth, so to be involved in such a landmark project for the village was a huge privilege.”

The new village hall was a five-year project that saw the original 1930s hall demolished and a brand new one built in its place. The project cost £1.35m and attracted funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, the Welsh Government Community Facilities Programme and the UK Government Community Ownership Fund.

The main contractor on the project was Jamson Estates Ltd, with the fenestration element provided by GD Windows.

The centrepiece of the building is a nine-metre Stellar Aluminium Slimline Bifold Door with low threshold that acts as an internal room divider.

Tristan commented: “Stellar Aluminium is a remarkable system, and the nine-metre bifold door is the perfect example of its strength. Its sleek design, combined with its durability, allows for expansive, unobstructed views while maintaining superior performance. It’s testament to how award-winning product design can work to transform spaces.”

LEKA SYSTEMS EXTENDS MARKET OFFER WITH NEW GARDEN BUILDINGS

Leka Systems has just announced its latest groundbreaking innovation: the Leka Xi Garden Building. This new addition to the range offers a unique value proposition for fabricators and installers looking to capitalise on the growing demand for garden rooms.

Rhys Hoddinott, Managing Director of Leka Systems, commented: “The Leka Xi Garden Building gives fabricators and installers a value-added proposition to tap into the growing trend for garden buildings. It is as quick to fit as our popular Leka Xi modular system and with a slimline profile, it’s cost comparable to traditional timber garden structures.”

The Leka Xi Garden Building has all the innovation the market has come to expect from Leka Systems. It is entering the market at the perfect time too, as more and more homeowners are exploring garden room options. Rhys said: “In recent years, we’ve witnessed a substantial increase in interest for freestanding garden buildings, and this trend shows no sign of slowing down. Moreover, the structure is portable, allowing homeowners to relocate it within their garden or even move it to a new property.

STELLAR ALUMINIUM FRAMES ADD DRAMA TO UNIQUE GLAMPING POD

Haffner has announced the appointment of Mike Moulds as the company’s new Business Development Manager. Mike brings with him over 20 years of experience in the industry, having started his career in 2004. With a wealth of knowledge and a strong network of industry contacts, Mike is set to play a key role in driving Haffner’s continued growth and success.

Stellar Aluminium frames and doors manufactured and installed by GD Windows have brought drama to The Tri-Pod, one of three glamorous pods situated on a working farm in Pantcefn near Llanarth in Mid Wales.

Gwyn Davies, Director at GD Windows said: “The Tri-Pod allowed us to show off the versatility and style of Stellar Aluminium. The slim frames maximise the light in the space and put all the focus on the spectacular countryside views.”

The Tri-Pod features full height Stellar Aluminium frames and a set of Fully Flush French Doors to the front aspect. The products were manufactured in black on both sides to complement the black external cladding, while the fully flush finish delivers a sleek contemporary style.

Every element of The Tri-Pod was carefully considered to create a luxurious retreat. Gwyn said: “The owners of The Tri-Pod knew every fixture and fitting needed to be high-quality to deliver the ultimate holiday experience. Stellar Aluminium was integral to creating this feeling.”

Stellar Aluminium’s renowned thermal efficiency was also an important part of the project. The system is Part L-compliant by design, even in new build projects, helping to ensure The Tri-Pod is cosy inside on even the coldest of days. It achieves the impressive thermal efficiency thanks to the patented reverse butt joint, which means there’s no need for dummy sashes, reverse profiles or adaptors, thereby reducing the amount of frame and increasing the thermal efficiency.

Phil Parry, Technical Director at Epwin Window Systems, commented: “Stellar Aluminium continues to demonstrate why it is a market leader in product innovation and design. The Tri-Pod project highlights how our system not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also delivers outstanding thermal performance. We are delighted to see GD Windows utilising Stellar to its full potential.”

HAFFNER SHORTLISTED FOR G AWARD

Leading machinery supplier Haffner has been shortlisted for the new Machinery Innovation Award at this year’s G Awards.

Matt Thomas, Haffner’s Managing Director, said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted this year. It’s the third nomination in a row for us. We’ve been fortunate to have won our category in previous years, so we’re keeping our fingers firmly crossed we can make it three in a row this year!”

Haffner has been shortlisted for its KT 808-50 Assembly Table for Door Sash because it eliminates the time-consuming manual alignment of a door outer frame and sash. The KT Table increases consistency, accuracy and speed, allowing a fabricator to manufacture one door every five minutes. It is a transformational solution for every volume door manufacturer. Matt said: “Ensuring the outer frame and sash align consistently in door manufacturing is essential for both hinge placement and aesthetics. For high volume door manufacturers in particular, this is a significant issue that slows down production rates and impacts quality, ultimately taking money away from the bottom line. Several fabricators approached us to develop a solution and in response, we developed the KT 808-50 Assembly Table for Door Sash (KT Table), which optimises sash assembly by combining different processes on a single table.”

Haffner Ltd is the UK’s largest machinery supplier to the fenestration industry and its dedicated team works hard to help customers select the perfect machinery to streamline operations and boost efficiency. It is truly committed to adding value to fabricators’ businesses – something that’s perfectly illustrated in the development of the KT Table.

The G Awards were launched in 2004 and are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. The awards evening is dedicated to rewarding innovation and exceptional performance from the best companies and the best people in the UK market. This year’s event will take place on Friday 29 November at London Hilton on Park Lane.

QUICKSLIDE’S HAT TRICK OF AWARD NOMINATIONS

Quickslide is delighted to reveal it has been shortlisted for three top awards: for customer care, best window and manufacturer of the year.

Quickslide’s innovative digital product visualiser tool, Legacy On-Screen, has earned a finalist spot for customer care initiative of the year in the glazing industry’s premier G Awards, while its Legacy sliding sash has been shortlisted for Build It’s best window award. Meanwhile, the fabricator has also been named a finalist for Manufacturer of the Year at the Business for Calderdale Awards, recognising Quickslide’s standing as a key local employer in Calderdale, West Yorkshire.

“The best thing about being shortlisted for three awards is that each one highlights a different, vital aspect of what we do: our excellent customer care, our great products and our achievements as a business,” said Quickslide’s Managing Director Ben Weber.

The G Awards celebrate the glazing industry’s innovation and excellence. “They are acclaimed as the pinnacle event of the year among our industry peers and being shortlisted for the customer care initiative award recognises the extra mile we go for our customers,” Ben said. “Legacy On-Screen, our web tool which seamlessly integrates with our trade partners’ websites to present our sash windows to potential customers, is a great example of our commitment to our customers.

Coupling classic heritage styling with superior technical performance, Legacy is the sliding sash window of choice for conservation, renovation, and new-build projects alike.”

Completing a hat trick of recognition, Quickslide is also a finalist for Business for Calderdale’s manufacturer of the year award. Ben said: “This one couldn’t mean more to us. We’re a national business with strong local roots and have grown from 30 employees when we started 20 years ago to over 240 today. Our people are our greatest asset, and this award nomination is a recognition from our own community of their talent and hard work and also our support as a business for our employees and the community.”

“Being finalists for three awards is a great recognition of the work and success we’ve enjoyed this year. It’s a real testament to our business and most importantly our people. It’s shaping up to be an exciting end to what has been an exciting year for us.”

Stellar Aluminium selected for eco holiday property in Aberystwyth

Stellar Aluminium was the preferred window system of choice for a new eco-friendly holiday property in Aberystwyth.

Manufactured and installed by GD Windows, Gwyn Davies, Director at the company said: “The property owners wanted a window and door system with strong eco credentials and excellent thermal efficiency. They also wanted slim sightlines to make the most of the site’s stunning views. Stellar Aluminium was the perfect choice.”

Across the project, GD Windows installed 24 Stellar Aluminium Flush Casement Windows, two fixed pane windows, one shaped window, one three-pane Slimline Bifold Door, one set of French Doors and four Stellar Residential Doors. All products were finished in Anthracite Grey for a sleek contemporary appearance.

To further boost the eco credentials of the detached five-bedroom holiday home, a ground source heat pump provides heating and hot water into the property and an electric vehicle charging point has also been installed.

Phil Parry, Technical Director at Epwin Window Systems, said: “Stellar Aluminium has excellent credentials for eco-focused projects like these. Its unique design doesn’t use rebate adaptors and allows the option to remove dummy sashes. This not only enhances the thermal efficiency but also allows for slimmer, more streamlined sightlines which were important on this project.”

PLASTIC RECYCLING MAESTRO TAKES OVER THE REINS OF BOUTIQUE SUSTAINABILITY & CIRCULAR

ECONOMY

CONSULTANCY OAKDENE HOLLINS

The ownership of one of the UK’s most established and prestigious boutique environmental consultancies, Oakdene Hollins, has been taken on by plastic recycling aficionado Simon Scholes. This move cements Simon’s commitment to helping businesses from a wide range of different sectors get clarity around the often complex and confusing regulations governing recycling and sustainability in everyday operations.

Simon initially joined the organisation in February 2023, bringing with him over 20 years of board level expertise in plastics recycling. Previous to joining the consultancy Simon was managing director for VEKA Recycling where he established a trusted route for PVC window waste.

“For many companies the desire to make operational changes that will have a positive impact on the environment are top of their agenda, but the route to get there can be fraught with convoluted directives and conflicting guidance,” commented Simon Scholes. “Oakdene Hollins is perfectly placed to get up close and personal with a business, inserting itself into everyday operations and gaining a deep understanding of their particular challenges to integrating sustainability and a circular economy, laying out the pathway to implementing this in a viable and profitable manner.”

Simon also brings with him his knowledge and experience gained as vice chairman of the Recycling Group at the British Plastics Federation, working with UK plastic recyclers to inform on industry, political and economic initiatives and changes. Simon recently received a 75@75 award from Interplas for being in the top 75 influencers within the plastics industry.

Oakdene Hollins is a boutique sustainability and circular economy consultancy that has worked extensively with businesses across a wide range of sectors, including construction, automotive, insurance, textiles and furniture.

EPWIN WINDOW SYSTEMS PRODUCTS SELECTED FOR LUXURY HOLIDAY RETREAT

Stellar Aluminium and Profile 22 PVC-U windows and doors from Epwin Window Systems were selected for a luxury self-catering holiday home located in the scenic Cardigan Bay, Wales. The high-end property refurbishment was awarded to GD Windows, an experienced fabricator and installer with over 30 years’ experience in private and commercial projects.

The Courtyard provides luxurious self-catering accommodation set within the grounds of a Georgian mansion, surrounded by 50 acres of pasture and woodlands on the Glaneirw Estate in Ceredigion. In 2013, the current owner started an extensive refurbishment programme, transforming the main mansion and its surrounding estate buildings. The Courtyard was meticulously renovated to an exceptionally high standard, preserving original features such as slate floors and terracotta tiles and combining with high-end modern fenestration solutions including aluminium bifold doors and flush casement windows. All products were carefully considered to maximise the stunning views of the breathtaking countryside.

Gwyn Davies, Director at GD Windows said: “The owners of The Courtyard wanted to use high quality products that combined comfort and superior sophistication. The combination of Stellar Aluminium and Profile 22 ticked all the boxes.”

GD Windows installed two five-pane Stellar Slimline Bifold Doors, each 5m x 2m which fully opened up the rear elevation of the property. Additionally, a four-pane Slimline Bifold Door of 4m x 2m was also fitted to the rear elevation. The installation also included a four-pane Lift and Slide Stellar Door, along with a corner window featuring two fanlights above a fixed light. Over 20 Profile 22 Flush Casement Windows completed the transformation. All products were finished in Anthracite Grey on both sides, creating a striking contrast with the building’s cream stone exterior and adding a sophisticated touch to the interior design.

GD Windows took full responsibility for the manufacture and installation of all products, collaborating closely with other trades on-site to ensure seamless project coordination and a flawless execution. Their attention to detail and commitment to quality helped maintain the project’s momentum, delivering a meticulous finish that met the high standards expected for this luxury development.
