Hi Everyone... We have some great community halls across the GC&M News distribution area, run by a bunch of dedicated volunteers. Recently we have been talking to Mooloolah local Jason Carroll, who is keen to spread the word about what a great facility Mooloolah Public Hall is and encourage others to use the hall and get involved with what is happening there. The next big event planned for the hall is on Saturday, August 10, which will be a great night of live music for the whole family. The night kicks off at 6pm with local musicians, Jagged Edge and Tash, then at 7pm the headlining Landscape Band, a folk style group who combine music and spoken word, will be performing. The performance is part of a tour of Sunshine Coast community halls, which has already seen great nights at both the Kareelpa and Montville halls and in September will also be happening at the Landsborough hall. The band has put together a terrific show celebrating nature, rivers and forests, and our place and responsibilities within these. Mooloolah hall has provided GC&M News with a family ticket for the night. To enter the competition to win the ticket, head over to our Facebook page. Regards,

Local News Postie Ron has vehicle stolen By Greg Brown Brazen thieves stole Ron and Joy Ratcliffe’s postal delivery car from outside their post office in Beerburrum two Fridays ago. Not only did they steal the car, they also took off with the parcels it contained. Ron was loading the vehicle – a white 2012 Subaru Forester – with parcels when he went back inside to serve a customer. In less than a minute, and unseen by Ron, a car pulled up next to his and both cars were driven off down Beerburrum Road. The first thing he knew about the theft was when local resident Helen Manson said to Ron that his car wasn’t outside. An unbelieving Ron then realised that the bandits – a woman and two men – must have been watching him and saw that he left the keys in car when returning to serve the customer. Although Ron has CCTV cameras they didn’t capture images of the carjackers but did clearly show the getaway car and its number plate. Police told Ron that the perpetrators were subsequently spotted and followed to Woodford where they were involved in an alleged drug deal. Ron said that the woman was known to police and that she lived at Ninghi. The police have yet to locate Ron’s car. Ron says he’s learnt a lesson and reminds everyone to take care with possessions.

“You just don’t know who is watching or hanging about,” he said. “It’s a shame but you now have to lock up everything and don’t leave anything in plain open sight which might be a target for these lowlife thieves.” Ron asks the community to keep an eye out for the white Subaru Forester with numberplates 459 XZM. If anyone sees his stolen car, please report it to police on 131 444. On a brighter note, Beerburrum has had a mini boom over recent weeks with the opening of a range of new shops. A pleasant day can be had in Beerburrum browsing through the antique and collectable shop, checking out some art at the Glass House Mountains Art Gallery and having lunch at the Burrum Takeaway - all newly opened businesses. A new boutique-style general store is due to open soon as well. These add to the existing range of retail shops and services in Beerburrum to provide locals and visitors with a charming village shopping experience.

By Sonia Clark After a two-year break Coochin Creek Co-op is set to bring back its popular Farmers Golf Day event. Co-op general manager Steve Williams said that he and his team were looking forward to hosting the day, which is planned for Friday, August 23 at Beerwah Golf Club. “We ran our last one in 2016 and then decided to put the event on hold to concentrate on strengthening the Co-op business,” Steve said. “We are really glad that we now have the time to invest in hosting the event, which is just a really great social day out and a chance for local producers to come together. “The whole team here is really looking forward to the day.” In previous years the event was for Co-op members only but this year Steve said that all primary producers and farmers in the region were welcome to attend – whether they are a member or not. “Every player gets a prize and you don’t have to be a pro-golfer to come along. It’s really more about having fun and meeting other farmers and local producers in a relaxed environment. “We’ll have four players per team and if you are an individual player then we’re happy to help organise a team for you on the day,” Steve said. The participation fee for the event is just $49 and includes catering (morning tea, lunch, drinks) and green fees for the day.

Steve Williams, Andrea Parr, Heather Purcell and Allan McColl … ready for action Teams or individual players are welcome, with tee off (shotgun start) at 7am. If players arrive earlier they can also enjoy a sausage sizzle breakfast put on by the local Lions Club. To find out more or to book in, contact the Co-op on 5494 6219.

Celebrating our local dairy industry Dairy farmers of the Sunshine Coast came together last Friday over a cup of tea and a slice of cheesecake to celebrate 120 years of dairying at the recently reopened Maleny Cheese Café. Owner of Maleny Cheese, Sara Bucher, said milk from the Sunshine Coast area was becoming harder to source for processors. However, thanks to the resilience of local dairy farmers, the industry continues on the Sunshine Coast hinterland and is part of the sub-tropical dairy region that spans from Coffs Harbour in NSW through to the Atherton Tableland in North Queensland. Historically, Maleny Dairy Co-Operative was one of many local Sunshine Coast hinterland processors to take local milk and process and sell it nationally and internationally. The milk of this area is of high quality and resulted in it being suitable for butter making that was so good it could be exported to England.

Photo taken of cheesemaking in Teutoberg (now known as Witta) in 1899 at Mrs Bergann's Farm

These days local processors regularly receive awards for the products they make from their locally sourced fresh quality milk, including Maleny Cheese, Maleny Dairies, Woombye Cheese, Maleny Food Co and Cedar Street Cheeserie. Those in the rest of the country who tuned in to last Friday night’s ‘Better Homes and Gardens’ will also know just how good our local produce is after one of Australia’s best-loved TV chefs and food authors, 'Fast' Ed Halmagyi, visited Maleny Cheese as part of the show. With more than 20 years of cooking in some of the world’s best restaurants, both in Australia and overseas; the presenter of the Channel 7 program visited the region to film a series of food-themed episodes last month. Ed Halmagyi said the most remarkable thing about the Sunshine Coast as a food destination was its unique combination of variety and world-beating quality. On last Friday night’s show, Ed managed to get Sara on the cooking tools and together they created a truly spectacular looking sweet treat that combined lush strawberries from Strawberry Fields at Palmview with Maleny Cheese’s triple cream brie to make a vanilla brie mousse with twicecooked strawberries and pistachios. The filming of ‘Better Homes and Gardens’ on the Sunshine Coast was coordinated and supported by Visit Sunshine Coast (VSC) and Sunshine Coast Council. The previous Friday night’s show featured an interview with Maleny’s Spicers Tamarind Retreat head chef Dan Jarrett about the upcoming Sunshine

Landsborough and Glass House Mountains Vet Surgeries operate out of two convenient hinterland locations to ensure the very best care for your pets. Due to demand, the Glass House Mountains clinic has recently extended its operating hours and is now open from 9am-4pm Monday-Friday and 8-11am Saturday. As well as a dedicated team of nursing and support staff, the surgeries have four veterinarians who work between the two clinics. Dr Tom Duggan, Dr Althea Bowden, Dr Phoebe Shirlow and Dr Rachel McDonald are committed to providing excellent care and good old-fashioned country service to the local community. Dr McDonald is the newest addition to the team, having recently returned to the area with her husband, who grew up in the Glass House area. Experienced veterinary nurse, Emma Richards, is available at the Glass House Mountains clinic full time, and all four vets rotate their sessions between the Landsborough and Glass House Mountains clinics. With the recent acquisition of a dental machine, dental services are now also available at the Glass House Mountains clinic, which is great news for those wanting to keep their pets’ teeth in tip top order. The increase in clinic hours at Glass House Mountains includes greater vet availability on a number of afternoons per week, in addition to having a vet onsite for early appointments on Saturday mornings. Sara Bucher, of Maleny Cheese, with Desley and Tom Malone Coast event, The Curated Plate, a new four-day destination food festival from August 8-11. VSC CEO Simon Latchford said the programs were a fantastic opportunity to showcase the Sunshine Coast during prime time on a high rating national television show. “This not only puts the spotlight on our magnificent region but shows viewers we have incredible produce and that there is more to the Sunshine Coast than just our spectacular beaches,” Simon said. Sara Bucher said Maleny Cheese was delighted to be considered for the program and pleased that the timing worked well with the recent reopening of the café after the fire last September that closed the cheese factory. “Our family has worked in local production for 15 years and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Ed and the ‘Better Homes and Gardens’ team to share our knowledge of the region and our industry.” Sara said.

Inspired by the work of the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association of Queensland and in tribute to his good friend and indefatigable community advocate Joyce Newton OAM, who sadly died late last year from the disease, Jared Ashcroft is on a fundraising mission. As reported in GC&M News last month, Jared is participating in the Bridge to Brisbane race in late August with his efforts earmarked to support MND. To date, through the generous support of local community members and businesses, he is well on his way to achieving his revised goal of $5,000 for the MND Association. Jared took his fundraising efforts to the recent Maleny Show and was thrilled to raise a whopping $833.60 from contributions to a donation tin. To date he has raised $4,283.87 and hopes his next MND fundraising venture at the Maleny Showgrounds pavilion will also be well supported by the community. On Saturday, August 17, Jared has invited Melony’s Drag Queen Bingo to host a special MND fundraiser event. Featuring the cheeky comic genius of Melony Brests and her gal pal Sall Monalla, the event promises a hysterical night of comedy, drag shows, raffles, crazy prizes and more - all towards the MND cause. Entry is $20, with bingo books available for $10 or $5 for half. Doors open at 6.30pm and the balls drop at 7.30pm. The 18+ event will also have a cash

TS Centaur achieves! What a fantastic end to the financial year for TS Centaur, the Australian Navy Reserve cadet unit based in Maleny. The cadets were pleasantly surprised when they received a recent phone call to say they would be getting a new safety boat to replace their current 20-year-old tinnie. The photograph shows just how pleased the cadets were to receive it. Being a rigid hull inflatable boat (RHIB), it will be a much easier task if they need to recover cadets from the water. Now they need more local youths to join them and benefit from this generous acquisition. TS Centaur was also selected as Best Unit in the Daring Flotilla for the 2018-19 year. The Daring Flotilla consists of 10 cadet units spread from Bribie to Rockhampton, so this is quite an achievement. TS Centaur had been Best in Flotilla for three consecutive years when they were part of the Sunshine Coast Flotilla that consisted of only five cadet units. It is especially relevant to Linda and Eddie Vann, the commanding officer and executive officer of TS Centaur, as they will both be retiring at the end of this year. The unit is in desperate need of replacement staff and would especially welcome any ex-service personnel able to take over this rewarding role of training the youth of Maleny and district to become better citizens

and provide ceremonial support to the Maleny RSL. It is not necessary to be ex Defence to apply, just a desire to work with young people aged 13-17 years and to train them to utilise maritime themes. Training and support will be available during the initial phases. If you think you can assist or are a young person wishing to join TS Centaur contact Lieutenant Linda Vann at co.tscentaur@navycadets.gov.au or call 0402 060 050.

By Greg Brown No one can say Maleny is a place where community complacency is the accepted norm or where the locals are happy to just sit back and let things happen. Maleny is a place where people are passionate, upfront, vocal and, occasionally, notoriously Some of the organising committee members Barry Smith, Sheila Brydon, Claire defiant. Booth and Spe ncer Shaw Maleny is famously the place where cooperatives flourish, where there are more community groups than just about anywhere else (160 and counting) and where a diversity of opinion abounds. Yet, in a modern world of swirling social media, blinkered attitudes, parochial values and slick ‘consultative processes’, opportunities for meaningful, respectful and reflective community exchanges can be lost. Real conversations are about issues that deeply impact on the very fabric of what gives a place – like Maleny – its unique character and a sustainable longevity. This malaise had been plaguing Maleny local Roger Westcott for a while, until around 18 months ago he approached Barry Smith from the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre about an idea he was hatching. Over time, a small group of passionate Maleny locals met, investigated options and talked about how local community engagement could be improved, culminating in a public meeting held last Wednesday evening at the Maleny Community Centre. Attended by around 60 enthusiastic locals, the meeting explained and explored the proposed manner of community engagement. Barry explained that although there are the 160-odd community groups and organisations in Maleny, nearly all were membership-based and issue or interest specific. “If an outsider to the group wants to contribute on one specific issue, they have to join up as a member to have a say,” he said. “Often, that may be purely therapeutic, where you get your frustrations off your chest but then how do you actually make any change happen as a consequence?” Barry explained to the meeting that after investigating a range of community engagement systems, one involving a forum approach gave the best overall outcomes. “Village associations, like the one in Montville, perform well for their purpose but Maleny doesn’t need another ‘group’,” Barry said. “We recognise that we need a model where important issues can be discussed and debated - where everyone has an opportunity to participate and contribute. “This approach we’ve termed Maleny Forums.” The Maleny Forums model that has been proposed is based on a respectful and inclusive approach to gathering, sharing and discussing information on an issue, leading to decisions and actions. The outcomes will be driven by working groups formed as part of the forum, which will then champion the results in whatever ways are identified as appropriate. Maleny Forums will not be characterised by formal membership. There will not be a constitution and any form of incorporation. There will not be elections and involvement is purely voluntary and non-political. Maleny Forums will not claim to be representing or speaking for the whole of Maleny. After a period of discussion on the night, with some fleshing out of some of the concepts the model is based on, the meeting resoundingly gave their approval for the Maleny Forums approach. One of the meeting organisers, Claire Booth, was keen to encourage others to come forward to be part of the organising committee. “We’ll now work towards having a forum up and running in the not too distant future on an important issue raised through this meeting,” Claire said. “This has been a great vote of confidence. Now we can find a positive way forward to having a constructive say in the future of our community.”

Caring for the Hinterland community for over 20 yrs

Valuable discussion on end-of-life programs State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle recently hosted a community information session on palliative care and voluntary assisted dying. He thanked everyone who took the time to attend as well as the guest speakers - Shyla Mills, CEO of Palliative Care Queensland, and Jos Hall, president of Dying with Dignity Queensland who he said provided invaluable insight on their respective topics and answered all question posed to them by attendees. Mr McArdle said these were not easy topics to

hear and speak about but they were significant as this was a stage of life we must all face some day. “The community needs to be given the opportunity to learn more about what the current laws are and what changes to the legislation might mean for them. They need to be able to do so in both a safe and informative setting,” he said. “We also heard from Kelly Gourlay, the national policy advisor for Palliative Care Queensland, David Muir, the chairman of the Clem Jones Trust, and many other members of the community. “Based on the feedback I was given on the day, I believe we all came away with a lot of new knowledge about palliative care, voluntary assisted dying and end-of-life programs in other states and countries. “The morning was not about having a debate but providing an opportunity to learn from each other. “I think that we achieved that but, of course, this conversation is certainly not the last,” Mr McArdle said.

Community support for chappy Heather Dodwell and Bert Post, along with numerous other entertainers, will be donating their talent and time this weekend at the variety concert in support of Beerwah State High School’s chaplain, Mike Turner. The vital work Mike does in assisting students with social, emotional and academic issues is recognised and supported by many local organisations and businesses, with contributions from Beerwah

Palmview proposal falters Market showcases local The development proposal (reported in GC&M talents News, July 10) for a new tourism complex on the northern end of Frizzo Road at Palmview has fallen at the first hurdle. According to a letter sent by Sunshine Coast Council’s principal development planner Katrina Patey to the applicants – Hanseath Pty Ltd – the submitted application was not properly made. Ms Patey said in the letter dated July 4 that Hanseath failed to pay a $100,000 application fee, failed to provide written assurance that they would pay the cost of external consultants’ fees, failed to provide plans for the adventure golf course and building, and failed to provide plans for reconfiguring the land boundaries. Hanseath has 20 days from July 4 to make good these deficiencies otherwise the application will be automatically refused. This gives them a deadline of August 1 to come up with the money. Project spokesperson Andrew Stevens, from planning consultancy Project Urban, is confident the application will proceed. “The council application fee has not been paid as the proponents are awaiting the final invoice from the council to enable them to pay,” he said.

The CWA Beerwah branch has been running local artisan markets for the past five years. The original philosophy of the markets, which are still operating, is to support local creative makers who might otherwise not have the opportunity to share their creations with the public. It was a great pleasure for the branch when local athlete Louise Pearce, who has been recently selected to represent Australia at the Oceania Athletics competition in shotput, applied to have a stall. Louise was crowned Queensland Champion in the open women’s heptathlon and also placed second in shotput and third in long jump at the Queensland State Championships. Not only is Louise a very talented athlete she is also very creative and has partnered with her cousin to create Crafty Coast Cousins. Miniatures at Charity Sports

The miniature horses are back this year at the Beerwah Charity Sports Day. The handlers are getting their horses ready for a fun-filled day of halter, performance and novelty events. Come to the miniature ring and see the mini, small and little horses do the trail course, where they work their way through an obstacle course, or watch them do the hunter course, going over a series of jumps trying for a clear round. At the end of the day the fun and entertaining novelty events are held including the barrel, flag and bending races, where horses race with their handlers to get the fastest times. They may be mini but - wow - they can perform! For more information contact Melissa at mel.74@live.com.au.

Where’s the cheese?

Maleny Cheese hosted an informal but very cheesy celebration at its newly reopened café last Friday morning to mark 120 years of diary being a Sunshine Coast industry. Local buffalo farmer Margaret Thompson, whose family has had dairy farms for over a century, was asked to do the honours of cutting the birthday cheesecake. The event brought together past and current local dairy farmers who supply Maleny Cheese with milk.

New water meters for Landsborough and Mount Mellum

As part of Unitywater’s annual infrastructure maintenance program, it will be identifying and replacing water meters nearing the end of their life in Landsborough and Mount Mellum. Affected residents will receive a notification card in their letterbox at least 48 hours before works are carried out and, if they are home on the day of the work, Unitywater’s authorised contractor will make contact with them before replacing the meter. Following meter replacement the contractor will leave a ‘works completed’ card in the resident’s letterbox, which records the water consumption measured by the old meter. Customers are advised to keep this reading for reference and to cross check when they receive their next Unitywater account. This work is part of Unitywater’s commitment to maintaining infrastructure and providing a reliable and safe water supply for the community. For more details visit www.unitywater.com/maintenance-programs or phone the Unitywater’s customer contact centre on 1300 086 489.

Maleny Bakery wins gold! Kevin Le and his talented team of bakery staff at Maleny Bakery have taken out a swag of top medals in the nationally run Australia’s Best Pie and Australia’s Best Pastie competition. The industry-led competition held recently in Melbourne saw hundreds of baking professionals from around Australia battle it out to impress the judges in the hope of taking out top recognition for their pies and pasties. This was the first time Kevin and his team had decided to enter the national competition and incredibly all eight baked entries submitted were awarded either a gold, silver or bronze medal! Kevin entered six pies and two pasties into the competition on behalf of Maleny Bakery. The pepper steak and curry beef pies took out the gold medal in their class, with the remaining four pies all gaining silver recognition. Their pasties also did well – gaining a silver and bronze award for the

business. “It felt great to win these awards. We have a fantastic team of bakers and staff and these awards absolutely represent a whole team effort,” Kevin said. “We also want to thank all our regular customers and the locals who support our bakery and give us feedback about our products.” Kevin says he feels the secret to the great taste and flavour of their pies is that they are all made from scratch using all locally sourced ingredients. “We create each pie to our own special recipe and take our time to slow cook the meat to help release the flavour,” he said. “A lot of time and effort is put into each and every batch of pies and pasties.” All meat is sourced through local butchers, Barry Family Butchers, and Kevin said he wanted to thank Barry and his team for supplying such great

quality meat, which he feels also contributes to the award-winning taste of their pies. Maleny Bakery stocks a huge selection of baked goods including more than 30 types of cakes and sweet treats, sourdough, Vietnamese pork rolls and more. Why not drop in and try an award-winning pie or pastie for yourself?

Community Groups Wood Expo a winner

Contributed by John Andrews Members of the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild held their annual Wood Expo in the Montville State School assembly hall on Saturday and Sunday, July 6-7. The hall was filled with a large variety of wooden items for display and/or for sale. Attendance throughout the weekend was steady in spite of the wet weather and from all reports those who attended were very impressed by the wide variety of items on display. The Woodies are extremely grateful to the Montville State School for their co-operation and generosity.

All smiles at the men’s shed

Contributed by Damian Petrie It was a great day recently at the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed when they were presented with a barrel sander as well as a slide compound mitre saw. This all started when CR2SM (Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway construction team) asked the shed to manufacture temporary manhole covers and 390 were cut out of the 25mm material supplied. As a result CR2SM organised Blackwoods, an industrial supply company, to supply the tools that have been on the shed’s wish list for a long time. An extensive morning tea was held, which the men greatly appreciated. Blackwoods also agreed to maintain support of the shed by discounting prices as well as an annual gift.

BMX riders jumping high thanks to community grant Suncoast Hinterland BMX Club is leaping ahead thanks to a Mooloolah track resurface made possible by a $6,369 Sunshine Coast Council major community grant. Applications for the council’s next major community grants program are now open and not-for-profit community organisations are urged to seek funding for projects, events and activities that will benefit Sunshine Coast communities. Suncoast Hinterland BMX Club president Kelly Jull said her club was thrilled to have received funding to carry out the much-needed track resurface. The club has members aged from three through to their 60s, including many female riders and the track is open to the public. Ms Jull said the resurfacing would encourage more people to get outside, get active and take part in the healthy pastime. “We have had a lot of comments about how good the track is looking and the resurfacing has really helped reduce the amount of time we need to spend maintaining the track,” Ms Jull said. “It has greatly lessened the impact of the recent heavy rain.’’ She said the club was looking forward to showing off the resurfaced track at an open day this Saturday, July 20, which she anticipates will be attended by about 350 riders. Community portfolio councillor Jenny McKay urged not-for-profit community groups to act now and get in the running for a grant before applications closed on August 26. Cr McKay said the major community grants program, minor community grants program (in events category only) and the environment levy grants program were now open.

“Our not-for-profit community groups play such a fundamental role in building social connections, encouraging participation and volunteering and teaching people new skills. All of these things are critical for creating healthy, smart communities, which is why council is committed to this program,” Cr McKay said. To give your organisation the best chance of securing funding, the council will hold four information sessions around the region. “You’ll have the opportunity to chat with council’s grants officers and get our top 10 tips for grant writing success,’’ Cr McKay said. Information sessions will be held at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre on Wednesday, July 24 from 10.30am-12noon and at Caloundra CWA Hall on Tuesday, July 30 from 10.30am-12noon. Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project Providing access for our region to the world Public consultation

Whether you are ying for pleasure or for work, or looking to export, the Sunshine Coast Airport is a crucial piece of infrastructure for our region. More than half our population* will travel by air for business or pleasure at least once this year, but many will commute to Brisbane first because our local airport runway cannot accommodate the larger aircraft for long haul flights. We’re doing something about that! Sunshine Coast Council is building a new runway that’s bigger, wider and better aligned with prevailing winds so our community can access the world from the Sunshine Coast. A new runway and better facilities means greater accessibility and more opportunities for work, tourism and exporting businesses. The Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project didn’t just happen overnight. It’s been a long time in the making. This project has been the subject of extensive consultation with the community – in both the Sunshine Coast Council and Noosa Shire areas – over many years. It has the approvals required from all levels of government to proceed. Construction of the new runway is underway and is due for completion in 2020. The proposed flight paths to support the new runway have been in the public domain for

nearly five years and remain so to this day. These flight paths have been the subject of extensive public information and consultative processes along the way. The airspace around the Sunshine Coast is very constrained by safety considerations, terrain, populated areas and the fact that this region is part of the Brisbane Basin and therefore its flight paths are close to, and intersect with, the airspace and flight paths servicing the Brisbane Airport and Amberley Air Base. Airservices Australia has made it clear there are very few options in terms of potential viable flight paths for the new runway and that the concept flight paths that have been published since 2014 and subject to community consultation provide a good basis for the detailed design of the new flight paths.

Clarinets return to Maleny

By popular request, St George’s in the Hills has invited Brisbane’s Classic Clarinets to be the second in the 2019 series of music for listening performance at St George’s Church on Sunday, July 28 at 2pm. Priest-in-charge Jeanette Jamieson said the audience loved this group when it performed in the church two years ago. “So, our St George’s in the Hills committee members were pleased they were available for the second concert in our series. “Playing the complete range of clarinets from piccolo to the large contra-bass, they will perform music by classical composers from Bach to Grieg and Elgar and include popular numbers by George Gershwin and Scott Joplin,” she said. St George’s was recently the venue for the international Chamber Philharmonia Cologne who added Brisbane bassoonist Karen Ruprecht to the group for the program. They played to a packed church and a standing ovation. “They were so impressed with the response, the ambience and acoustics of the space, and hope to be able to come again to Maleny,” Rev Jamieson said. Classic Clarinets has a membership of up to 30 players under the baton of Graham Evans, a professional player and director with British orchestras and wind groups before making his home in Australia. He also played at the Tamworth Conservatorium when Derek and Margaret Taylor (Maleny Singers) first re-located from England. Now in Brisbane, Graham performs, teaches and is in demand as an adjudicator, examiner and conductor. Tickets for this concert are available from the website www.malenyanglicanparish.com by following the prompts. There is also a directional map to show how to get to the church on the corner of Tallowwood Street and Walkers Drive. Phone Trish Bagshaw on 0448 989 621 for tickets or take a chance and just turn up at the door – open from 1.30pm.

Do you know how to correctly treat a burn? With winter well under way, many people enjoy keeping warm by having fires, either in the home, in the backyard or out camping. While a fire can provide a lovely way to warm up family and friends on a cold winter evening, they are also a risk for burns or serious injury. A burn is an injury to the body’s tissue resulting from heat, chemicals, electricity or sunlight. The severity of the burn depends on the amount of tissue affected and the depth of the injury.

Generally, burns are classified in severity from first degree burns through to the most damaging, third degree burns. Do you know how to correctly treat a burn in the first instance? Doctors at Landsborough recommends that the burn is run under cold water for a minimum of 20 minutes. For those treating a child, it is important to remember never to place a child with burns in a bath full of cold water. Dress the burn with a nonadhesive bandage and don’t apply any ointments or creams. If the burn is larger than a 20 cent piece, is deep or not causing pain, seek medical advice immediately. Also seek medical advice if the burn involves the airways, hands or feet.

If you are concerned about a burn in any way or you are unable to treat the burn yourself, attend the Doctors at Landsborough clinic where one of the medical team can assist you. If you have any concerns regarding burns or any other health issue, the experienced team of health professionals - Dr John Dunlea (Dr John), Dr Louise Mitchell (Dr Louise), Dr Ayla Polat-Kaya (Dr Ayla) or Dr Brittany Weaver (Dr Brittany) - along with the medical support staff, are there to help. Conveniently located next to Australia Post in Landsborough, Doctors at Landsborough is the only 100% bulk-billed practice in the area. You Said It Support appreciated

The re-stumping of the Morris House building has been completed after a few delays. We would like to sincerely thank Sunshine Coast Council for providing us with a grant to carry out this urgent work and for providing additional funding for expenses that were not expected when applying for the original grant. We would also like to gratefully thank the Lions Club of Beerwah for donating $500 for our emergency relief program. Without donations such as these we would not be able to assist those in need in our community. We also receive ongoing help from the Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church and Glasshouse Country Anglican Church Food Bank. The donations of food and other goods are generously provided by the church members. We also received an unexpected and very welcome donation of a large number of potatoes from Fresh & Save at Beerwah. These were greatly appreciated by our clients and provided additional fresh food, which we are not usually able to provide. Thanks to the church members and to Fresh & Save for all of their thoughtful donations. Morris House Landsborough

Rail duplication truths

Mr Addison (GC&M News, July 10) is correct. The NGR (New Generation Rollingstock) trains are operating but are not compliant with disability standards. They need to be modified according to this document www.traininquiryngr.qld.gov.au/ assets/custom/docs/coi-final-report-2018.pdf. Mr Addison is also correct in stating that the rail duplication to Beerburrum was completed in 2009. However, the extension to Landsborough never got past the planning stage. Instead, other

“shovel-ready” projects such as the Beerwah grade separation were undertaken. Why the project stopped may be related to the GFC, as its high cost may have been a factor. After the Newman LNP government was elected, Peter Wellington, the Member for Nicklin, tabled the following petition on December 30, 2012: “The petition of citizens of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the need to resume rail duplication works from Beerburrum to Nambour as a matter of high priority. Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to revise the timetable currently set for 2026-2031 and allocate the funds required to deliver the project. We request that the resumption for the Beerburrum to Landsborough section be no later than the end of 2014.” The Minister responded: “Unfortunately for the Beerburrum to Nambour track upgrade, we cannot afford to commit to the project at this time due to Labor’s projected $100 million debt.” (www. parliament.qld.gov.au/work-of-assembly/petitions/ tabled-paper-petitions Petition 1897-12) My original letter (LNP mistruths) refuted Mr Andrew Powell's claim that Premier Palaszczuk had broken her promise to start the B2N project. Included in that letter was a reference to the current status of the B2N project which is: The railway land has been reserved by law. The Australian Government committed $390 million in 2018. The Queensland Government has committed $160.8 million in 2018. The Queensland Government has committed $50 million in 2019-20. Detailed planning is about to get underway (as at May 2019). Waste of money

Fixing the potholes on Burys Road at Beerwah with dirt is a ridiculous waste of money. Why doesn’t the council just fix the road properly by laying bitumen? Every time it rains the work is undone in one downpour. It’s pure insanity to keep doing what the council is doing. Lisa Pizzey Beerwah

State budget

It’s disappointing to see that our local member Andrew Powell thinks he can still treat Glass House residents like mugs. His column in last week's GC&M News proves that he is either prone to porky pies or completely incompetent. Having stated that the state budget contained $956,000 for the Woodford P-10, Mr Powell went on to say that "...is all Labor have provided for the Glass House electorate". Even a cursory glance at the state budget website will tell you that this year's budget allocates the following for Glass House - $500,000 in 2019-20 out of a $3 million total spend for a Maleny Fire and Emergency Services complex; $1.2 million in 2019-20 out of a $3.4 million total spend to upgrade visitor and recreation facilities at the Glass House Mountains National Park; and $1.5 million in 2019-20 out of a $4 million total spend to upgrade the intersection of Peachester and Old Gympie roads outside the Beerwah State School. Those are significant projects for our local area but for some reason Andrew Powell is trying to tell us they don't exist. You'd think after ten years in Parliament he'd have learnt how to read the budget papers. Brent Hampstead Maleny

Hinterland Kids Free Saturday junior golfing clinics By Sonia Clark

Got a budding progolfer or junior player interested in trying something new? Did you know that Beerwah Golf Club offers free junior clinics for those aged 8-18 years every Saturday morning from 9-10am? Coaching is delivered by head professional John Mellish, who provides a fantastic introduction to the sport as well as a great opportunity for kids to try their hand at something different. Assistant professional Rob Foster says bookings are not required - just turn up at the golf club pro shop at 8.45am to meet the coach, have a quick run through what the clinic involves and pick the right equipment for the class. “We get a great turnout with generally between 20-30 kids aged between 8-15 years old coming along. We run a barbeque on Saturday mornings and everyone has a heap of fun,” Rob said. Any child is welcome to attend the clinic and no experience is necessary. Rob said they welcomed all junior players and for those who had never picked up a golf club before it could be a really great way to get a feel for the sport and pick up a few tips from the professionals. “We provide all the coaching and equipment. The kids just need to wear a pair of running shoes or joggers. It’s a fun way to spend Saturday morning.” To find out more call the pro shop team on 5494 6611, or turn up on Saturday morning at the golf club, Biondi Crescent, Beerwah.

Guppy’s enjoy a morning with local police

Contributed by Senior Constable Susan Lowndes The children at Guppy’s Early Learning Centre in Beerwah were delighted to have a couple of local police officers visit them recently and the officers were more than happy to talk to the children about road safety. Senior constables Sandon and Sawyer spoke to the children about the importance of road safety, particularly about always wearing your seat belt and staying seated in moving vehicles. The children then got a close-up experience with the police vehicle to see the radios, radars and other equipment. The children enjoyed being shown the police car and, of course, no visit would be complete without demonstrating the lights and sirens!

Out & About Knitfest delights

Another successful Yarn and Fibre Arts Festival was held in Maleny over the weekend of July 6-7. The wonderfully creative work that decorated the trees, poles and even the lovely cows outside Woolies for the past few weeks added plenty of extra colour to the town. These photos are just a selection of what took the eye of our community photographer Marsha Kelly over the weekend.

Guarding your plants with Spencer and Karen Shaw

You may have noticed pink Corflute guards on revegetation projects such as the Maleny Community Precinct and Skippy Park at Beerwah. These tree guards are simply the best when it comes to protecting your planted stock from weather extremes, nibbling fauna and accidental damage during weed control. The quality Corflute material and seasoned hardwood stakes (supplied by a South East Queensland timber mill) make for an effective, long-lasting product. Planting is an investment that we often under value but we are investing our time in plants that are sometimes rare and hard to get hold of. It really is worth using tree guards to ensure we reap the benefits of our planting projects - be they big or small! A great mulch product that we stock is palm fibre mulch mats. They are durable and swell to approximately 1-2cm thick when installed. These, in combination with the pink Corflute guards, make for a great package to establish tube stock, whether for revegetation or in your garden. Forest Heart is your local supplier for pink Corflute guards, fibre mulch mats and, of course, a great range of local native plants for your revegetation and garden.

When is the best time to plant eggplant and also Brussels sprout? Is it better to do from seed or seedlings? Sue Willmott, Beerwah Hi Sue – they are two edibles with very different needs. In short … it’s too early for eggplant and it’s too late for Brussels sprout. Eggplants are part of the Solanum family – same as tomatoes, potatoes and capsicums. All these really prefer warmer conditions to grow and thrive, so it would be better to wait until the end of August to put them in the soil. That way the soil is warm and the roots won’t suffer from cold shock. You can grow them from seed, which is what you’ll probably have to do if you want to grow any of the unusual ones, such as the many heirloom varieties available. If you just want the stock standard large purple eggplants, go for a punnet of seedlings. If you decide to try your hand at seed raising, I’d suggest getting the seed planted any time from now to have them ready for planting in late August. To do this successfully, you’ll need to sow them into shallow containers of seed-raising mix and keep them in a warm, sheltered location so that the soil temperature will stay about 20 degrees. Inside on a window sill is generally good. Once they’ve germinated and are a couple of centimetres high, you can pot them into small individual pots and keep them in a sunny, sheltered spot outside. Don’t forget to water and feed them regularly. As for Brussels sprout, they are part of the Brassica family (like cabbage, broccoli and kale) and so are winter growers. Brussels sprout is much better suited to cooler southern climates than ours. To get them to produce sprouts, I’ve found you have to have the seedlings in the ground in March/April so that they mature about now. Later planting will see the plants mature too late when it starts to warm up and you won’t get nice tight sprouts forming. I have grown them from seed and they are very easy to germinate, so if you plan well ahead and sow the seed in early March they will be ready to plant out in late March (although for you Sue, that will be next year now). I did find that the leaves of Brussels sprout make a very nice leafy green alternative. They can be shredded into stews and soups, sautéed as a side dish or cooked in the oven to make kale chip substitutes. In fact, I find them better than kale for this.

The van will be in the Coochin Creek Co-op car park, in Simpson Street, Beerwah from 9am-1pm. Rev Bruce Johnson (Locum Minister) Blackall Range Uniting Church

Beauty in diversity The Uniting Church in Australia is struggling to deal with its National Assembly’s decision to allow ministers and congregations to conduct weddings of same gender couples. It is not the first time we have found ourselves misunderstood. It happened 25 years ago when we established a covenant with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sisters and brothers, and again when we adopted a new preamble to our constitution recognising the first peoples of Australia and acknowledging their sacred relationship with the land. Our National Assembly is made up of about 240 men and women from all parts of Australia with the majority being lay members. While the assembly agreed to allow those ministers and congregations who chose to conduct same gender marriages, it also recognised that there are many ministers and congregations who believe

strongly that Christian marriage could only be between a man and a woman. This means that the Uniting Church now recognises two distinct and different understandings of marriage. For some on both sides of the issue this is untenable and they have chosen to leave, or fight for the church to settle on one view of marriage. Many are convinced it is possible, with love and respect, to live out our desire to be a church of unity despite great diversity. We believe that our unity is found in God’s love for us and all people, not our capacity to always agree with one another. If this attitude can be sustained it might offer a sign of hope amidst the conflicts and divisions that threaten to tear our nation and world apart. Many things generate division within our community - country and city; conservative and liberal; gay and straight; rich and poor; Indigenous and non-Indigenous. These divisions can damage or strengthen our community. It depends upon our capacity to be open to the strengths and beauty of those around us rather than allow fear and suspicion to generate hate. As a newcomer to the Blackall Range, I rejoice in its beauty and diversity and it reminds me of the wonder of God who brought it all into being. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

Division ten away to Bribie Island saw a great win by both teams to give us a 43-35 overall win. Division 11 home to Kallangur, a draw and an outright win gave Glassy another win for the day. Three division wins - very good effort all round from our small club. Sunday, July 14: 31 players from Lend Lease travelled to our club for an afternoon of social bowls. Thanks to those members from our club who took part. Winners were Bev Walker, Via Parker and Vic Muscat with two wins + 22 margin. Lend Lease Bowls Club visit

Miguel wins four gold, one silver Contributed by Stuart McIntosh Local Glass House Mountains State School year 3 student Miguel, aged 8 years, representing the Glasshouse District Little Athletics Club, recently attended the Little Athletics Winter Carnival in Townsville and brought home four gold and one silver medal in the U9 age group. This carnival was the precursor to the 2019 Oceania Games and ran over two days of heats and finals. It was well attended by many other clubs from South East Queensland including Bracken Ridge, Helensvale, Caloundra, Runaway Bay and a large contingent from Algester, as well as clubs from throughout Central and Northern Queensland. Miguel won the 70m, 100m and 200m sprints, all in new personal best (PB) times as well as the long jump gold but could not match his PB in the high jump and had to be satisfied with silver. He also set a PB in the 400m heats, but was unwell to run in the 400m final missing out on a medal chance there. Miguel was also invited to run in the all ages open handicap 100m and was able to bring home a cup for third place.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Sunday, July 14 the Witta Wompoos hosted the Nambour No Worries in a division two vets match. The Wompoos team of Donna Kuskopf, Brenda Warner, Haydyn, Denis O’Neil, John Poole and Andrew Blowes battled hard but were eventually beaten by a better team on the day. The match was in the balance with two sets to play with Nambour leading by 6-4 sets and by five games. The last two sets were shared and both went to tie breakers resulting in Nambour winning seven sets 54 games to the Wompoos five sets 49 games. The Wikings travelled to Nambour to play against Nambas Menaces. Lots of leg slapping couldn’t get the team a win. John Bradshaw, Glenn Smith, Rob Weller, Kev Bochow, Pauline Fraley and Nat Rienstra won on games but lost on sets. Final score was Nambas seven sets 48 games, Wikings five sets 55 games. Date claimer - Mary Valley Come and Play Tennis Day Sunday, July 28, 10am–2pm at Witta Tennis Club. Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover Great weather meant a return to our usual schedule of bowls. Well done to those bowlers who supported our Tuesday morning bowls. Last Wednesday night was a small crew due to the clash with State of Origin. This week we are back to normal with great weather predicted so a full group of bowlers is expected. Replacements will be found for Paul Kemp, who is travelling, and our regular organiser Miles Allen, who is in the north west of Australia with his art work. Looking forward to hearing from these folks who will soon rejoin the competition. Well done to Jim Weidman, Don Ginns, Ray Ellemor and Joe Walters who travelled to Kilcoy and had good wins. Friday saw some very close competition at Scroungers. It was great to have Helen and Bruce Williams with us for this event. Ben Fawns is hitting some good form. Doug McGufficke finished strongly on his rink. Ian Chatterton had a close tussle to win by a point. Richard Bond had a good win on his rink. Congratulations to Ian Chatterton and Dave Burgess on their championship win. Well played all. Sunday fast bowls proved popular again. Come and try as it will improve your bowls and your mathematics. It is a great afternoon in the outdoors at Maleny Bowls Club. Make it a must. Nominations are called for the fours and mixed pairs. Please check the program outlined by games coordinator Miles Allen. Reminder to folks to get a team together for the monthly pairs. A number of nominated teams are up so please confirm with your playing partner and let Jim Weidman know your intent on the blackboard now that the painting has been finished. It is hoped nominations are in by Wednesday prior to the event. There was a great turnout last month, so let's keep it going by supporting our own monthly event. Have a great week on the green. A reminder to all to support our sponsors who in turn help us.

Contributed by Ken Barker The club second division championship was played on Thursday with Nick Cram finishing second and Ken Barker winning it. The open division will be played this week, July 18-19. Third and fourth division will be played on July 20-21. Visitor Wendy from Macedon club in Victoria played association on lawn two with Wallace Roy and Bev Sockhill. They were joined part way through by Frances Harper. On Sunday Val Carbery and Stuart Craig paired up to get a turnabout game of association going with Wallace Roy and Sarah Widin. Vince Carbery played Ken in a game of singles showing some welcome good form. Unfortunately, Wallace had to retire hurt from the former game and both games were stopped at the tea break by rain. No scores were recorded. Donna Manning travelled away for a wet weekend in Murwillumbah to play very well and be runner up in the Gold Coast women’s championship against some very strong opposition. All hands were on deck for the Lochwood game against Nambour on Wednesday, July 10. Ken won a mistake riddled game against Theo Kleiberg 16–10. Nick went down in a close game to Eileen Kleiberg 17–18. With the game scores at one all Vince and Nick teamed up to win the doubles 17–13 and the round 2-1 games. Thanks to Donna and Val for refereeing.

Vince (above) contemplating whether he will try to make hoop two with the pink ball. He does this while waiting for the blue ball from another game to do the same. Blue does not have as difficult a decision as it is in line with the hoop and black, its partner ball, is behind. The pink is a trickier shot so Vince had to choose – does he try for the hoop and run the risk of losing control of the game or does he abandon the break and go back to his partner ball? He played and made the hoop – a brave decision that paid off. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds from 8-10am on Saturdays. Never miss an opportunity

As a popular local politician, Chris always tried to help out whenever he could. That’s how it came to be that when a fellow came up to him in a hotel and asked for a small favour he was more than happy to oblige. “Hi,” said the fellow, introducing himself as Bob Smith. “I’m having a very important business meeting in a few minutes and it’s very important that I impress them.

Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 The Full Moon in Capricorn brings to a head recent struggles on any construction or building agenda that involves home and business. A friend’s odd behavior is pulling you in a different direction. You are a believer in action but you must have faith in yourself. Retrograde Mercury brings family issues with which you disagree. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This Capricorn Full Moon promotes renewing old contracts, travelling or planning to take a trip. An intriguing invitation could come your way and you meet someone really fascinating. Clear communications mean that others will connect with each other and so, with Mercury retrograde, attempts to refashion past deals need rethinking. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 Money matters are now highly emotional and possibly very urgent. There is a situation that may need a focus of resources and concentration to make a good plan for necessary improvements. Those improvements require a strict budget and have to run on limited funds. Take advantage of benefits available arriving last minute. CANCER June 24 - July 22 Not only will there be an eclipse this week but it is in your opposite sign, Capricorn. This means involvements with other people are intense. Be aware of any tendency to over react in a dispute that can severely test a faltering business relationship. There is the possibility of an eventual getaway, or an escape that can make a difference!

Week Beginning 17/07/2019

“If you can just come over during our meeting and say hello I would be forever indebted to you.” A few minutes later, Chris found himself walking over to the fellow with a big smile on his face. “Hi Bob,” he said. He’d barely got the words out of his mouth when Bob looked up with an annoyed expression. “Don’t bother me now Chris. Can’t you see I’m in the middle of an important meeting?”

LEO July 23 – August 22 There are some recent restrictions and some undertones going on about your work. Are you plotting something behind the scenes? The eclipse this week brings to an emotional head the recent difficulties in work or a family separation. Mercury retrogrades from your sign back into Cancer, taking you to behind the scenes situations. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The Full Moon will intensify any tendency towards emotional extremes as it is in the sign of Capricorn, opposite the earlier eclipse two weeks before in Cancer. Both these signs work well with yours but they can produce a conflict to limiting everything that you want to do. However, do you really need to burn bridges behind you? LIBRA September 23 - October 22 The Full Moon in Capricorn means this week there is an eclipse working in recent developments between your professional and private home affairs. You may probably feel either a sense of urgency, isolation or question of who is going to support you over the next few months. You may see unstable emotional reactions. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 There are agendas now involving your home, family, work, siblings and neighbours. Upheavals with any of those mentioned will lead to a chance in your whole perspective. This is because there is an eclipse that on the one hand brings a calming energy but on the other side facing fears of security and work prospects now.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Your financial developments are brought into urgent focus because at this eclipse time it is necessary to let go of the past, consolidate a budget and accept a separation. This week is the time for a plot to the future growth of yourself and your career for the next six months. Retrograde Mercury stirs up emotional reactions. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 From the New Moon to the Full Moon, this weekend in your sign sees you as a force to be reckoned with. You can make things happen! Use the single-minded focus to get what you want but, if possible, do not engage in power plays. A sympathetic ear makes all the difference and you are lucky to have a caring partnership connection. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Your emotions are working behind the scenes and you are moving through a lot of responsibility. The universe has blessed you with secret resources, which you can use now, under recent eclipse patterns, to reach your goal. A dramatic conversation and a host of activity makes you energised all week. Dramatic interactions! PISCES February 20 - March 20 This is a wonderful week with the compatible Full Moon sign of Capricorn bringing structure into your affairs of family, social life, children and career. There are deep feelings that have surfaced over the past fortnight and you are well on the way to open change and transformation! The love you feel for someone is very real now.
