Andrew really knows his wines
Love of wine leads to a respected career
Maleny residents may not know they have an expert wine enthusiast at their disposal. Andrew Jones, from Purple Palate, has been working in the hospitality industry since he was 20 years old. After discovering an interest in all things wine, he undertook further study to become one of few in the world to gain qualifications through the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET), based in London.
After running hotels for 15 years, Andrew moved into the retail market, discovering an interest in wine which extended far beyond just selling a product.
“I wanted to learn more about the products I was selling,” he said.
“Seeing where they are made and what is needed to produce a good quality product became important to me, which is why I decided to do further study.”
His interests continued to grow as he wanted to learn more about where products were made, what conditions they needed and the history behind how they came to fruition. In the past few years, Andrew has completed several courses and most recently obtained his level four Diploma in Wines, to become one of 10,000 worldwide to hold the qualification.
Andrew said his education had taken him to many different places, learning the necessities of wine making and production including different tasks and factors that affect the style, quality and price. He has travelled throughout Australia, Spain, France, Italy and Scotland, to name a few, and has even been an adjudicator at the Barossa Wine Show in previous years.
“The whole educational experience of completing the diploma, including visiting and meeting people who are passionate about making, enjoying and appreciating wine, has been enjoyable,” he said.
Andrew’s diploma is just the beginning as he hopes to complete a Masters in Wine through WSET. It is an exclusive program but Andrew hopes he will be successful in gaining a coveted spot. There are just 330 individuals worldwide who hold a MW – including two hailing from Queensland who, Andrews says, have been fantastic in taking him under their wing.
“And they are, without exception, wonderful people.”
Andrew has brought his expert knowledge, understanding and passion for wine to Maleny, passing his training and knowledge on to his team – to the benefit of locals. Purple Palate holds regular events throughout the month, which Andrew says are well received. They include wine tasting, information evenings and master classes.
