Beerburrum quarry extension application

Beerburrum quarry looks to extend lifespan

Holcim Australia has applied to Sunshine Coast Council to extend its extraction permit for another four years at Sunrock Quarry on Nursery Road at Beerburrum.

The current permit expired on September 14 and the quarry needs to extend its development permit to continue to operate.

In a submission to council, Holcim said that a previous expansion of production capacity, approved under an earlier permit, had been delayed by a number of market factors.

“In the time since the development permit was issued, market conditions in the Sunshine Coast region have steadied and, as a result, production volumes from the Sunrock Quarry have remained stable for much of this time,” the recent submission said.

“As a result of steadied market conditions, the life of available reserves within Sunrock Quarry has been sufficient to service the local market for longer than was anticipated at the time the approval to expand production capacity was obtained.”

According to Holcim, the continuation of the quarry operation will have little impact on local communities.

“The proposed extension of currency period will not result in inconsistencies with the current legislation and policies applying to the development and the approved development will continue to be consistent with the community’s reasonable expectations for works associated with the existing quarry and the approved extension at this location.”

If approved, this will push the development permit timeframe out to September 2023.
