Beerwah pool transformation underway If you haven’t noticed, there’s something going on down at the Beerwah Aquatic Centre. Construction has started on a $1.8 million upgrade to the aquatic centre, which will see a new 17m heated and covered pool built, with special features making it easier for swimmers of all abilities to access the pool. Along with the new pool, improvements will be made to the car parking and the Roberts Road entrance, plus a refurbishment of some of the centre’s other facilities. Funding for the upgrade has been a cooperative effort, with Sunshine Coast Council providing $1.04 million, pool operators Swim Fit contributing $260,000 and $500,000 coming from a federal government sporting grant. At the ceremonial sod turning last week, Mayor Mark Jamieson said that the Beerwah Aquatic Centre was an essential part of our healthy, smart and creative lifestyle. “People of all ages and abilities will be able to enjoy these new and improved facilities when works are completed later in the year.” Local councillor Rick Baberowski, who took his own children to the pool to learn how to swim, said the upgrades will make a big difference to people from across the Glasshouse Country region. “Locals know this upgrade is about much more than making the presentation of the building look a hell of

a lot better,” Cr Baberowski said. “Not only will there be a much improved experience for people requiring warm water therapy but fitness class participants and children learning to swim will have significantly more space.” Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace was pleased that the federal government’s community sport infrastructure grant would help the health and wellbeing of local people. “Whatever your stage in life, staying active is vital for our physical fitness but it is also critical for our mental health as well,” he said. The aquatic centre will continue to operate as normal during construction but there may be some access disruptions during this time. The new pool is planned to be up and running in November this year.
