NATIONAL ART SCHOOL TOURING EXHIBITION National Art (part one) presents a dynamic selection of artworks by 50 of Australia’s most significant artists who studied at Australia’s leading art school – Sydney’s National Art School.

Julie Rrap, ‘Outerspace No. 9’

As the National Art School approaches 100 years on its Darlinghurst site (1922– 2022) and over 175 years in operation, this exhibition celebrates some of the extraordinary artists who trained at the institution over the past seven decades. The exhibition features recent artworks and early formative works by key alumni, and applauds the creative drive, skill and imagination of those who have emerged from the School’s historic sandstone walls to become artists of national significance.

National Art (part one) presents diverse approaches to artmaking bound by a common grounding in studio-based practice and a passionate commitment to experimentation. The artists’ approaches vary considerably, from abstract and expressive genres to experimentation with form, to cultural landscapes and political perspectives, dada and the surreal, interior viewpoints and the everyday. The work demonstrates the various disciplines taught at NAS; ceramics, painting, photomedia, printmaking, sculpture, as well as inter-disciplinary practices utilising digital media, assemblage, performance and artist books.

THE LITTLE MERMAID A full length classical ballet production of the traditional fairy-tale story.

SNEAK PEEK

The Little Mermaid is a new work in the Victorian State Ballet repertoire that follows the narrative based predominately on the story by Hans Christian Andersen. Choreography by Michelle Cassar de Sierra is a stunning display of classical ballet and physical theatre that magically tell the tale of this much loved story. The story unfolds in another world where a young mermaid dreams of a life beyond the sea. She bears witness to a shipwreck and comes to aid a drowning sailor. Having saved his life and delivered him back to shore, her curiosity is awakened, and throwing caution to the wind, she seeks the council of the wise sea crone who advises her that all gifts come with a warning yet grants her the power of transformation. Re-united with her sailor, she struggles to conform to human ways and quickly discovers life in a palace, chasing a prince, and navigating her new legs is not as easy as she dreamed! Come and see the magnificent and colourful costumes, sets and props accentuating the beauty and splendour of this magical story, together with the outstanding skill, artistry and technique of the Victorian State Ballet. ARTIST IN RESIDENCE EXHIBITION

EMMA WALKER The Gallery is dedicated to showcasing Australian contemporary arts practice, creating opportunities for contemporary artists to connect with our regional audiences and vice versa.

ARTIST BIO:

Walker has been exhibiting for over thirty years. Her career has enjoyed the strong support of patrons Ann Lewis AO, Nick Waterlow, OAM and Julian Beaumont OAM. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the National Art School, Sydney, and she has also studied in Italy and travelled extensively. She was a finalist in the Paddington Art Prize (2017, 2013, 2010, 2008) and winner of the prestigious Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award (2014). Walker has held numerous exhibitions in both Sydney and Melbourne, and her work features in several major public and corporate collections including Macquarie Bank, Australian Club, Sydney, Lismore Regional Gallery, Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre and Bathurst Regional Gallery, in addition to various private collections in Australia, Indonesia, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Emma Walker consistently and evocatively engages with the natural world, looking at the patterns and rhythms that recur in nature. Carving, sanding, digging, grinding, glazing, dripping and scratching into layered timber, the artist creates a unique process and approach to her sculptural wall paintings. From ancient landscapes of sea, rock and sky to the microscopic patterns and rhythms that power existence, her work moves between the micro and the macro in a formative dance. As much about the process of painting as they are with visually imprinting the Australian environment, Walker’s unique imagery emerges from a combination of experimentation and automaticity, each mark growing from the next in a catalytic reaction that emulates the geological occurrences that cause continents to move and shorelines to reshape, etching on the faces of rocks, rivers and ravines. Our Artist in Residence program connects our community with visiting artists. The Glasshouse Artist in Residency program provides a working space for artists to develop their arts practice, resulting in a new and exciting never before seen exhibition.

A BADAPTATION OF THE BARD CREATED BY RICHARD HIGGINS, MATT KELLY & DECLAN GREENE THE LISTIES & CRITICAL STAGES TOURING

A very cheeky, very clever, utterly irreverent riff on Hamlet – made especially for children. The Listies, maestros of children’s entertainment, have pulled apart Shakespeare’s classic and glued it back together with hilarious costumes, loads of silliness and plenty of interactivity.

Hamlet is already full of things kids love in a good story: ghosts, castles, sword fights, bodily fluids and spooky stuff. Add to the mix some supersonic gags and expertly timed stage magic and you have a brilliantly disguised Shakespearean tragedy for everyone aged five and over. And that’s not all... expect bonus pillow fights, pirates, ninjas, ninja pirates, aliens, ninja pirate aliens, zombies and a bunch of other hilarious stuff as The Listies take kids and their adults on a fun-filled hour of theatre. The only thing we can be sure of is that everyone dies at the end – including the audience!

If you want your kids to have fun at the theatre and fall for all its magic, get them to a Listies show as soon as possible… Nobody else makes Shakespeare this fun.

Interview with the Director - Fraser Corfield

CREATED BY AUSTRALIAN THEATRE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE (ATYP) IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE ADVOCATE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE (ACYP)

Follow Me Home is an insightful new theatre production by awardwinning playwright Lewis Treston. Presented as a series of vignettes, the play reveals the real stories of a group of extraordinarily strong, resilient and courageous young people from across Australia. Telling the truth, being honest and sharing your story takes guts. Real guts. How do you tell your friend she can’t sleep over anymore? Can you help a parent when she’s lost all hope? How can you strive for independence when the system is working against you? And what if just being honest means you’re out on the street? Inspired by the real life stories shared by homeless young people across NSW, this thought provoking work from Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) is a must see for audiences aged 14 and over. Four talented young actors take on multiple roles in a fast paced show that will leave audiences with a shift in perspective, a little more compassion and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AN INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM ON STAGE WITH ATYP! Performance Experience for Students Professional Development for Teachers If you have an outstanding group of young performer’s eager to hone their dramatic performance skills by participating in Follow Me Home, ATYP will work with you to include your students in the production. One of the best ways to learn is by working with leading professionals and ATYP’s Artistic Director will work with an Educator on a virtual masterclass exploring each of the scenes from Follow Me Home and considerations in casting and rehearsing each piece. Students can then rehearse the scenes. When the cast of the show arrive in your community, they then rehearse the scenes with your young performers so they can feel what it is like working with professional actors. ATYP will then select a number of student performers to participate in the production to be performed to the broader Port Macquarie Hastings Community at the Glasshouse on Thursday 19 August, 1pm. 2020 JACARANDA ACQUISITIVE DRAWING AWARD GRAFTON REGIONAL GALLERY

It is with great pleasure that the Grafton Regional Gallery presents the 2020 Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award (JADA), especially in these challenging times. The JADA is the Gallery’s flagship biennial art prize graciously sponsored by the Friends of Grafton Gallery. It is with great anticipation and excitement that the project develops every two years and, as the gallery expands in 2020, the JADA continues to celebrate Australian contemporary drawing at it’s finest. This year that tradition of excellence continues with 56 artists selected from a record 659 entries for the exhibition. The exhibition

will continue its touring legacy by travelling to communities across Australia and promoting contemporary drawing to regional audiences for the next two years. The JADA celebrates drawing in all its forms. From the expressive and the abstract, to the hyper-realism that is beyond belief, the works evoke a poetic and emotional response to our environment and the human condition. Many of the finalists selected question and challenge the notion of the traditional drawing, while others provide a contemporary perspective and reinvigorate those traditions.

PETE THE SHEEP ADAPTED FOR THE STAGE BY EVA DI CESARE, SANDRA ELDRIDGE & TIM MCGARRY BASED ON THE BOOK BY JACKIE FRENCH AND BRUCE WHATLEY

Shaun isn’t like the other Shearers in Shaggy Gully…

Monkey Baa's take on ‘Pete the Sheep’ is a funny and engaging treat that goes beyond simply putting a picture-book favourite on the stage. There's a chance that it will provide stimulus for real conversations about language and theatre and difference. And challenging the herd mentality. ALANNA MACLEAN, SMH

...he’d rather be styling than shearing and instead of ‘sheep-dog’, he has a ‘sheep-sheep’ named Pete. After being rejected by the shearers and their dogs, Shaun and Pete set up their own Shearing Salon in town and before long word is out and they are inundated with woolly clients and maybe a Ringer or two! This hilarious show, imaginatively told by four performers playing shearers, dogs and sheep explores the challenges and rewards of being an individual and will be a lasting tribute to honouring your own spirit and strength, whilst working with the flock. Adapted by Monkey Baa in 2014 from the picture book by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley, with foot-tapping music and lyrics by Phil Scott and comedic direction by Jonathan Biggins.
