Welcome Firstly I would like to thank everyone who participated in our Creative Summer program, it was a great success, we enjoyed record numbers for Gallery visitation and workshop attendance, with wonderful feedback from visitors. Autumn is a time to warm up in the Gallery with a wonderful selection of new and inspiring exhibitions. March brings vibrancy with the aptly titled Autumn exhibition of new paintings by well-known local artist Val Allen. In this exhibition Allen continues to explore her connection to the natural environment. Later in the March our Art Lab will be bursting with creativity as we host the talented Newcastle-based fibre artist Meredith Woolnough for a residency and workshop. Throughout the Autumn season we will be showcasing our collection in a number of exhibitions. May brings three new and exciting exhibitions to inspire you; Bare: Degrees of Undress an exhibition from the National Portrait Gallery that celebrates the body in all its splendour through Australian portraiture; Whispering and Rustling,
the Susurrus of People, Places and Things
environments; and Silent Rooms and Portals to
Uncertain Shores an exhibition of new work by accomplished Victorian artist Wendy Stavrianos which explores the hover between stillness and movement, between image and abstraction, inner-world and outer, personal and universal. Brighten up your Autumn with creativity! Our regular Craft Spot adult workshops, Sprouts family activities and Meet the Artist talks are a great way to get involved and will be held regularly throughout the Autumn months. I look forward to seeing you soon at the Gallery.

EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHT
EXHIBITION OPENING Friday 19 May, 6pm FREE - drinks available
for purchase at the bar. Bookings essential, 6581 8888,
ON SHOW 20 MAY - 25 JUNE Entry to the Gallery is free.
Bare: Degrees of undress celebrates the candid, contrived, natural, sexy, ironic, beautiful, and fascinating in Australian portraiture that shows a bit of skin. Bare selects and remixes portraits from our collection around elements of nakedness. Fun and forthright, the exhibition will interrogate our instinctive, embedded and complex reactions to the bare. Surprising relationships appear, including portraits of Australia’s greatest sportspeople and our foremost creative achievers. Portraits of Billy Slater, Germaine Greer, Dame Edna Everage, Matthew Mitcham, David Gulpilil, Megan Gale and many others are on display. It is intriguing to explore the subtle but crucial differences between the naked and the nude, being dressed or undressed and seeing someone clothed or unclothed. Bare reflects on the decision to uncover part, or all, of the body in a portrait, which says as much about the self, personality, identity and character as a selection of clothing. This exhibition is supported by the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to the national collections for all Australians.

Artist in Residence Meredith Woolnough 27 March - 31 March In March we are delighted to welcome textile artist Meredith Woolnough as our Artist in Residence. If you love textiles, fabrics, threads and embroidery, we encourage you to drop in, join the workshop and experience the development of a textile exhibition right here in your regional gallery. Meredith Woolnough's elegant embroidered traceries capture the delicate beauty of nature in knotted embroidery threads. Through a delicate system of tiny stitches she creates intricate and complex openwork compositions that are then carefully pinned in shadowboxes, just like preserved specimens. Inspired by the patterns, structures and shapes found in plants, coral, cells and shells Meredith's embroideries represent both the robust beauty and elegant fragility of life. Meredith is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning artist from Newcastle, Australia. Her work is held in public, private and corporate collections worldwide. 14
