GLASSHOUSE

Welcome Welcome back to another exciting season in the Gallery! 2019 kicks off with a bang with four new exciting exhibitions, ranging from blacksmithing with Discovery Fe26 to Australia’s leading contemporary photographers in the National

Photographic Portrait Prize 2018. Our 2018 artist in residence Todd Fuller returns with From

Somewhere; an animation created from a local story and young local artist Claire Johnson presents a collection of works on paper and ceramics with Ode to a Woman. There is sure to be something for everyone. Make sure you pop in and have a look. Local artists Sue Bell, Jan Kesby and Jackie Deane will showcase their talents in March. Opening night will be on Friday 22 March at 6pm so come and celebrate our local creatives! We will be closed from Tuesday 23 April until Friday 17 May for our annual gallery maintenance program – don’t fret, we will be back with a lick of paint and new exhibitions. Reversal by contemporary photographer Izabela Pluta, a video work Relay League by Angelica Mesiti,

Within and Between – Walking in the space of Landscape by printmaker Wendy Stokes

For the hands-on creatives we have Wendy Stokes conducting a two-day masterclass in May, inspired by her exhibition and we have a new program – Local Ladies who Move Shake

and Make, a six week evening creative class, where local artisan will take you through their creative process. For the kids we have our regular Sprouts Holiday Fun for ages 4-9 and we will pilot our Young

Movers & Shakers program for ages 8-14 with an interactive STEAM-based program, creating, coding and making! Thank you again for all of your continued support and we look forward to seeing you in the Gallery soon! Bridget Purtill Gallery Curator

Drift

Local artist Jackie Deane has had a lifelong connection to water, in her latest exhibition Drift she takes us on a journey through the mountains and rivers to our local salt air seascapes. “Even when one drifts from one lifestyle to another, my

love of nature and landscape

will always be an influence of my work.” Jackie Deane

Sue Bell & Jann Kesby Two Obsessions

Two Obsessions is a collaborative exhibition by artists Sue Bell and Jann Kesby each exploring and responding to their ‘obsessions’ with domestic and or much-loved objects. Whether it is in the making or the collecting, these

two

artists,

through

their

medium of choice, explore how these objects can create a sense of place, and become a part of the tapestries of daily lives. “At times the mind is filled with a need to express a feeling or

an observation to the point of obsession.” Sue Bell

Izabela Pluta Reversal

Reversal is a photographically-based installation that draws on Izabela Pluta, Variables (progress image), 2019, photo silk screen on found book and chromogenic print collage. Image courtesy the artist and THIS IS NO FANTASY dianne tanzer + nicole stein

Rose Macaulay’s 1953 book, Pleasure of Ruins, which articulates a relationship between the disappearance of buildings and the limitations of words used to describe them. Pluta’s exhibition materially translates, fragments and reconfigures Macaulay’s ideas to explore the mutability of things and the impermanence of places.

Opening night: Friday 24 May, 6pm Free* *bookings essential

Izabela Pluta has exhibited widely in Australia and in 2018 was shortlisted for the MAMA Foundation National Photographic Award. In 2019 Pluta will be presenting new work in exhibitions including

The National 2019: new Australian art at the Art Gallery of NSW and Resurfaced Geographies at Verge Gallery, Sydney. She is represented by THIS IS NO FANTASY, Melbourne and is a lecturer at UNSW Art & Design, Sydney.

18 May – 21 July

Calling all. This is our last cry before our eternal silence.

Angelica Mesiti Relay League

This message sent by Morse code in 1997 was the poetic starting point for artist Angelica Mesiti as she embarked on creating her exciting new work: Relay League. The message was not, as one may assume, a desperate transmission sent from a sinking ship, but rather, the final message signalling the end of the use of Morse code sent by the French Navy. In her latest work, Mesiti takes the dots and dashes of this forsaken language and brings them to life in a three-channel video installation.

About Angelica Mesiti Mesiti is increasingly establishing her reputation as one of Australia’s most outstanding artists. Working with the mediums of video and installation, and incorporating music and performance, her practice expands ideas of collective behaviour, social dynamics and human subjectivity through non-verbal forms of language and communication, exchange and adapted methods of expression.

Opening night: Friday 24 May, 6pm Free* *bookings essential Angelica Mesiti, Relay League (video still), 2017, commissioned by Artspace. Courtesy the artist, Anna Schwartz Gallery, Melbourne and Galerie Allen, Paris.

Relay League was curated and developed by Artspace and is touring nationally with Museums & Galleries of NSW. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body. The development and presentation of Relay League is supported by Commissioning Partner the Keir Foundation. Relay League was produced with the support of C ND National de la Danse, Paris and University of New South Wales Art & Design. Relay League will be accompanied by a book published by Schwartz City and designed by Formist.

Within and Between - Walking in the space of Landscape Walking in the space of landscape merges experiences of connection and process, both being key to engaging, knowing and understanding a site. “Walking involves moving through a space and upon a surface, it becomes a way of seeing, feeling or ‘knowing’ a landscape; it becomes a rhythmic process and the body becomes a vessel ‘collecting notations’ of visual and sensory information” Wendy Stokes.
