LIVE DIGITAL SCREENING

Tuesday 22 May “Romeo and Juliet is a blast for teenagers and adults alike…entertaining, loud, energetic and colourful.” Sun Herald. Romeo and Juliet will stream live exclusively to the Glasshouse! Playing to over 16,500 students in 2011, Bell Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a fast-paced, visually vibrant production with a distinctly Australian flavour. Set amongst the red dirt of the land, Verona is a small, isolated, drought-ridden community, where the young ‘star-cross’d lovers’ will be torn apart by an old family feud. Lovesick teenagers. Strict parents. Rebellion. No wonder students connect so well with Shakespeare’s tragic teens. Romeo falls for Juliet. Juliet swoons for Romeo. It’s a classic boy meets girl, boy loses girl love story.

For now, these hot days, is the mad blood stirring... Directed by Damien Ryan, this production stars Bell Shakespeare’s new troupe of Players.

the SCHOOL FOR WIVES Wednesday 10 October

? R E t a e ch

This is the story of a man with a problem.... He wants desperately to get married but is afraid that a smart woman will cheat on him. His ingenious solution? Enlist the help of a local convent to raise a girl so stupidly innocent that she won’t know the first thing about cheating – let alone the last. In his mind she will be ever-faithful. The perfect wife. Or will she? Are we all becoming too fixated with controlling our destiny? We want the perfect partner: smart, sexy, healthy, funny... but can we design a life for ourselves and have it all go according to plan? Is there any point or will fate and love always pop in and take over whenever they please? Bell Shakespeare brings to life The School For Wives, one of Moliere’s finest comedies which has been raising eyebrows in comic disbelief for 350 years. One of Jack Davis' most celebrated theatrical works, Honey Spot is given new life by the highly acclaimed Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company. A young girl makes friends with the new boy at school. Peggy is a budding dancer and daughter of the local forest ranger. Tim lives in a forestry owned house and dances to the rhythm of his cousin's didgeridoo. As their friendship grows, Tim agrees to help Peggy create a dance piece for the ballet scholarship competition and together, they blend the earthy feel of traditional Noongar dance and the fluid grace of classical ballet into one.

Honey Spot is a play about friendship and its power to bring worlds and cultures together. First staged in Western Australia in 1985 during the emerging reconciliation movement, it presents an optimistic, funny and moving story about overcoming racial differences and prejudices. With a striking original score performed live on cello and didgeridoo, Honey Spot is an iconic piece of Indigenous theatre for adults and children alike.
