Glasshouse, Port Macquarie: Champagne & Stars 2017

Page 1

1

I’m delighted to share with you our Glasshouse

Season of Champagne & Stars. As you peruse the dazzling array of performances, festivals and talks, I hope you feel inspired to indulge and sometimes challenge yourself at the Glasshouse in 2017. The Glasshouse doors first swung open on 1 July 2009. Since that time the building has become a cultural cornerstone and a significant contributor to the lifestyle and prosperity of our region. However it’s not the building as much as the people IFC that have made the Glasshouse what it is today. The Glasshouse 2017 Season of Champagne & Stars has been made possible by you. So a huge ‘thank you’ must go to Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, volunteers, sponsors and partners and of course to you, our loyal patrons and Glasshouse Members for your ongoing support!

Champagne and stars... is there anything better to evoke a dazzling sense of glamour, sophistication and occasion? This is so often the sensation that I experience when the Glasshouse foyer fills, the stage is set and the theatre doors swing open. So as the house lights dim, sit back and be swept away to another place and time – for this is the magic and romance of theatre. I look forward to seeing you at the Glasshouse soon,

Bec Washington Event Services Coordinator

Another bloody classic. The Gothic horror story swoops the country in a gripping, critically-acclaimed production created by shake & stir. When young Lawyer Jonathan Harker visits Castle Dracula deep within the Carpathian mountains, he’s not expecting the strange hospitality he receives from his mysterious host. Alone and trapped within the castle walls, Jonathan discovers that Dracula wants more than his presence at the dinner table – he might also be the main course. Leaving Jonathan for dead and his castle behind, Dracula travels to London on a quest for seduction, true love and above all – blood. From the company behind the multi-award winning, national touring productions of Wuthering Heights and Animal Farm comes this new adaptation of Stoker’s twisted tale.

Duration

Archè is the Greek word that indicates the beginning, the principle from which all things arise. The ancient Greek philosophers such as Thales, Anaximander, Anaximenes, sought the Archè in the four fundamental essences of the Earth: water, earth, air, fire; focusing on how they interact with each other. Beautifully paced and engaging theatre... an imaginative and immersive adaptation, directed with skill and style. THE AGE

Critical Stages & Glasshouse Port Macquarie presents

Thérèse Raquin

Adapted from the Emile Zola novel by Gary Abrahams A Dirty Pretty Theatre & Critical Stages Production

Thérèse Raquin is a genuinely affecting, thrilling, emotional rollercoaster. Thérèse lives a life of poverty and is married off to her sickly cousin in a loveless, arranged marriage. But her life is suddenly turned around when her husband’s friend, Laurent arrives and they begin a passionate, feverish affair. What follows in this masterpiece of French literature makes for a gripping, corseted thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Thérèse Raquin features an outstanding production design, with sumptuous costumes, a highly impressive set and compelling original music by Christopher De Groot – the perfect theatre experience for lovers of high quality drama. This stunning, critically acclaimed production is an original and uniquely Australian adaptation of a renowned classic work of French literature, a work of raw and immediate passion – a superb examination of corrupted morals, set in the notoriously dingy backstreets of Paris in the late 19th century.

Presented by Glasshouse Port Macquarie & The Tasmanian Theatre Company and Straightjacket Productions in association with The Karralyka Centre

Bakersfield Mist by Stephen Sachs

A hilarious and thought-provoking comedy-drama that asks vital questions about what makes art, and people, truly authentic.

Saturday 15 July, 8pm

Is the true value of art in the eyes of the beholder? Maude (Julie Nihill), an unemployed bartender, has bought a painting for a few bucks from an op shop. Despite almost trashing it, she now thinks it’s a Jackson Pollock worth millions. In fact she’s certain it is.

Duration

But when world-class art expert, Lionel Percy (John Wood), flies over from New York and arrives at her trailer park home in Bakersfield to authenticate the painting, he really has no idea what he’s about to discover. Based on a true story, Bakersfield Mist is a comedy set in the present day.

Glasshouse Port Macquarie presents Bell Shakespeare’s

The Merchant Of Venice By William Shakespeare

Money makes the world go around. Portia has it. Bassanio wants it. Shylock lends it. Antonio owes the value of it. Love also plays a part. Portia offers it. Bassanio wants it. And Antonio may lose a pound of flesh for it. This uncompromising and dark production explores the tense relationship and prejudices between those that have, and those that don’t. Dark in its humour and bawdy in its romantic hijinks, The Merchant Of Venice takes audiences on a journey of love, mercy and justice. Featuring three-time Helpmann Award winner, Mitchell Butel (Janet King and Rake) as the defiant Shylock, and Jessica Tovey (Wolf Creek and Wonderland) as Portia, this masterfully envisioned production tackles the prejudices and preconceived notions of one of Shakespeare’s most challenging plays.

admission

Some performances have a 'latecomer' lock out – so make sure you are seated in plenty of time to enjoy the performance. If you are late, you may not be admitted to the theatre until a break in the performance or a time nominated by the performance company. This happens so other Glasshouse patrons or the performers are not disturbed.

interval

Want a drink at interval? Beat the crowd and preorder/pay for your interval drinks at the bar when you arrive. At interval you can simply collect your drink/s and avoid the crowds at the bar.
