Wuthering Heights

By Emily Brontë

created & adapted by shake & stir theatre co

Love is a dirty word. Brontë’s gothic masterpiece will storm across the Glasshouse stage in a new adaptation from the company behind the critically acclaimed productions of George Orwell’s Animal Farm and 1984. When Heathcliff, a mysterious boy is rescued from the street and brought to Wuthering Heights, he develops a passionate bond with Cathy Earnshaw and a repulsive distrust of her brother Hindley. As time passes, Heathcliff and Cathy’s relationship deepens to the point of dangerous obsession, until one day, Cathy marries another man. Overcome with jealousy, Heathcliff flees the Heights only to return, years later, ready to exact revenge on those he believed ruined his one chance at true happiness.

The Divine Miss Bette Tired of the big smoke’s bright lights and constant applause, The Divine Miss Bette is in dire need of a soil change and has decided to go bush.

In 2016, she’s heading to New South Wales’ most vibrant, vital and vivacious town Port Macquarie! Following several sell-out seasons both in Australia and overseas (aka Tassie), Catherine Alcorn channels the people’s diva, Bette Midler in The Divine Miss Bette. The Australian said ‘Alcorn’s rendition elevated her titillating tribute to a tender triumph.’ Bawdy, brash and even more buxom than the original (yes, it’s possible) this whirlwind of a show will leave you breathless and begging for more! With all of Bette’s great hits, including Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, The Rose, Friends and more. Get ready for a divine experience, as the charismatic Catherine Alcorn inhabits the Divine Miss Midler. And have no fear, she knows what to do if they can’t take a joke! Recommended ages 15+ Occasional strong coarse language.

Live Live Cinema:

Little Shop of Horrors Don’t miss the ‘Mean Green Mother from Outer Space’ when Jumpboard Productions (NZ) presents Roger Corman’s The Little Shop of Horrors at the Glasshouse! While the original 1960 film plays on stage, four performers work at break-neck speed to re-voice multiple characters in perfect lip synch whilst playing a brand new score and creating live Foley (sound effects). The Little Shop of Horrors significantly ups the danger and excitement of the live performance by merging the band, Foley and actors into one small ensemble that work together at an amazing pace to create the live soundtrack. Our Audrey, Seymour, Mushnik and Dentist along with all the other characters will be leaping from piano to guitar, to bass to Door Bell, to that thing that makes the sound of footsteps. The Little Shop of Horrors will be an engaging feat of brilliant musical and cinematic theatrics celebrating the multiple skills of the live performers as well as the original film. Where will you look?

CounterMove

Sydney Dance Company

Sydney Dance Company’s CounterMove will enchant, compel and amuse you with exhilarating physical dance by some of Australia’s finest dancers. From one of the world’s most exciting choreographers comes a funny and affectionate tribute and parody of modern art: Cacti. Swedish Alexander Ekman’s witty and energetic piece, performed by the full Company and a string quartet, will take you in with a knowing wink, then surprise you with its physicality. Rafael Bonachela’s world premiere, Lux Tenebris, provides the perfect contrast: light and darkness emerging from a dusky sonic landscape by composer Nick Wales (long-term collaborator of Sarah Blasko). Movement follows deep, unexpected, visceral beats, and sharp, sudden twists to discover a dark place where there is space for beauty and light. Bonachela’s work, as always, is deeply emotional.

CounterMove will intrigue, move and entertain you. Warning: strong lighting effects. *Transaction fees may apply

Chi Udaka Taikoz and Lingalayam

Chi Udaka seamlessly blends a heartthumping barrage of virtuosic drumming with the sinuous beauty of Indian dance. This dynamic, cross-cultural theatrical partnership is a meeting of the thunderous drumming of Taikoz and the intricate classical Indian dance movements of Lingalayam. The vocabulary of both companies is steeped in history and tradition and they now come together with their respective Japanese and Indian practices to break new ground. Inspired by the forces of nature, Chi Udaka is a meeting of the deep earthiness of taiko drumming (Chi – earth) and the flowing sensuality of dance (Udaka – water). At turns delicate and dramatic, it unites the taiko drums of Taikoz, the shakuhachi flute of Riley Lee, cello and classical Indian vocals with Lingalayam’s juxtaposing of the Bharatha Natyam and Kuchipudi dance styles.

Mother

By Daniel Keene

Directed by Matt Scholten

Christie (Noni Hazlehurst) has found herself at the fringe of the world. Homeless, aging, living on the outskirts of suburbia, she attracts the curiosity of the locals with the story of her colourful, troubled life. Christie’s story is part truth, part fiction, and even she is no longer sure which is which. Beneath her wild exaggerations and fantastic tales of loves lost and struggles overcome there are haunting truths that that she would rather forget

Mother, a one-woman play written for acclaimed, award winning actor Noni Hazlehurst (City Homicide, A Place To Call Home, The Heretic), is the newest work from Daniel Keene (Boxman, Life Without Me, The Serpent’s Teeth) directed by his long-time collaborator Matt Scholten. Delving into the significance of our primary relationships, this provocative performance will leave you haunted with understanding and sympathy for those living on the farthest edges of society.
